Fire Country Season 5 started just as dramatically as we expected. The sinkhole caused chaos during Founders’ Day, but the town of Edgewater came together. However, the end of the episode brought a cliffhanger we did not expect.

Now it’s time to unravel the ending. As Station 42 comes under fire, it’s up to Sharon and the police to figure out who could be behind it all.

What Happened During the ‘Fire Country’ Season 5 Premiere?

In traditional Fire Country style, the premiere episode started with a major event. As Edgewater was supposed to celebrate Founders’ Day, a sinkhole formed and put lives at risk. Station 42 and Three Rock quickly jumped into action to help protect the residents, and they weren’t alone.

After initially meeting CJ in the woods, Bode ended up taking her offer of help in the sinkhole. After all, she was down there, and she has plenty of experience handling these sorts of emergencies. It doesn’t take long to clock that she’s a former firefighter.

What Happens During This Week’s Episode of ‘Fire Country’?

“Fire Under Fire” will pick up with the major cliffhanger at the end of the premiere. The whole of Station 42 — along with Three Rock — is getting shot at. Nobody knows who is after them, and that’s what the new episode will need to uncover. We’ll also need to see if everyone will make it out alive, as a couple of people were hit in the fire.

At the same time, Edgewater is under threat from a fast-moving wildfire. Is it possible that everything is connected? As Station 42 and Three Rock tackle the fire, Sharon turns to Hank from Sheriff Country to get some help with the shooting investigation. Sheriff Mickey Fox is also going to appear to remind us that these two shows are set in the same town, even if they’re filmed on opposite sides of the country!

At the same time, we need to learn a little more about CJ. Bode knows that deep down she wants to do some good, but what’s holding her back from being a firefighter again? And how will other members of Station 42 take to Bode bringing someone new on to the team?

It’s been 75 years since I Love Lucy made its debut on CBS. But before the premiere episode, “The Girls Want to Go to a Nightclub,” aired on Oct. 15. 1951, the network ran a promo introducing the cast of the show to America.

The rarely-seen promo was shared in a post to Lucie Arnaz’s Instagram page on the 75th anniversary of I Love Lucy. In the short black-and-white clip, series stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz say in unison, “Hey, we’re on TV now!”

“Watch for I Love Lucy,” Ball continues. “[With Lucille Ball] and Desi Arnaz… he’s my husband!”

“Typecastin’ that’s what  I calls it,” Arnaz chimes in.

Vivian Vance and William Frawley are also introduced in the  short clip, before Ball says once again, “Watch for us in I Love Lucy!”

When I Love Lucy was first pitched as a television show to CBS in the early 1950s, some network executives and sponsors were hesitant to introduce a show about the intercultural marriage of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. According to the I Love Lucy Museum, Ball once revealed, “[They] said the public wouldn’t believe I was married to Desi.”

Ball, who married Arnaz in 1940, refused to back down, and the rest is history. I Love Lucy changed the landscape of TV comedy forever.

In honor of the 75th anniversary of I Love Lucy, previously unseen production materials have also been acquired by the National Comedy Center.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that the National Comedy Center has acquired a series of behind-the-scenes photographs, 35mm film prints, and even original scripts from the show that were owned by Ball and Arnaz. In the early pilot script acquired, the series was titled The Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Show and the main couple on the sitcom was named Lucy and Larry Lopez.

On the I Love Lucy anniversary, Lucie Arnaz, the eldest child of the late comedy stars, shared a poignant post to Facebook to credit the whole team for the sitcom’s 75-year success.

“This sums it up best for WHY the show has lasted 75 years,” she captioned a Television Academy Foundation interview with the show’s writers. ”THE WRITING. The guy who says YES to those writers’ ideas and the genius of the lady who could pull those brilliant ideas off,” she wrote. “I raise my glass to that fantastic team of Bob Carroll, Jr., Madelyn Pugh, Martin Davis, Jess Oppenheimer and my mother and father, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. I could not be more proud to be a part of this family.”

Elizabeth Smart knows how to survive a life-or-death situation.

The child-safety advocate, 38, was abducted on June 5, 2002 at age 14. Her captors threatened to kill her and her family if she tried to escape. Against all odds, police returned Smart to her family on March 12, 2003.

She married husband Matthew Gilmour in 2012, and together they share three children: Chloe, 11, James, 9, and Olivia, 8.

Now she has launched a true crime podcast, The Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart, about survivors and their lives after facing traumatic circumstances.

After her ordeal, she has made it her mission to help women and children stay safe, and shared how to avoid dangerous situations.

“Prioritize your safety over other people’s emotions,” she told PEOPLE in an interview published Wednesday, Oct. 15. “There’s this saying, you will never see a gazelle getting into an elevator with a lion. But as women, we typically stifle our intuitions. And even if there is someone questionable or that makes you feel uncomfortable, we think, ‘Oh, I don’t wanna offend them.’”

But she says it’s important to act on your instincts.

“I think definitely for me, I was raised to be polite and respectful and courteous, and I think that’s great, but I would say that the idea that it was more important to be nice than it was to listen to my gut feeling was wrong,” Smart told the outlet.

She continued, “In reality, I would hope that my daughters, if they felt something was wrong, would just say, ‘nope, I’m waiting for the next elevator.’”

Smart won’t allow the kidnapping to define the rest of her life.

“I recognize there are some pretty terrible people in this world,” she told PEOPLE. “Unfortunately, I’ve had experience with two of them. But it’s also just made me realize I have one shot at life. And I know that I want to live my best possible life. I want to live, and do all of the things that I want to do.”

In the summer of 1966, the American airwaves were dominated by the sonic experimentation of the British Invasion and the rising tide of psychedelic rock. Yet, on July 2, an old-school titan managed to do the impossible. Frank Sinatra climbed to the Number 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with his romantic ballad “Strangers in the Night.” It was a monumental achievement that knocked The Beatles’ “Paperback Writer” off the throne, secured Sinatra a Grammy for Record of the Year, and ended an agonizing 11-year drought since his last solo chart-topper, 1955’s “Learnin’ the Blues.”

There was just one problem: Frank Sinatra absolutely hated it.

To Sinatra, a master of lyrical phrasing and sophisticated jazz standards, the track was an over-produced, simplistic piece of commercial fluff. The song had been cobbled together quickly, adaptation of an instrumental piece by German bandleader Bert Kaempfert with English lyrics penned by Charles Singleton and Eddie Snyder. Sinatra reportedly didn’t want to record it at all, but was pressured into the studio by producer Jimmy Bowen, who knew they had a commercial goldmine on their hands.

Bowen was right about the public, but dead wrong about winning over the artist. Once the track became a global phenomenon, Sinatra found himself trapped by his own success. Audiences demanded the song at every single concert. Ever the professional, “Chairman of the Board” gave the people what they wanted, but he refused to hide his utter disdain.

Before launching into the opening bars on stage, Sinatra regularly used his microphone to trash his own creation. Live recordings from his concerts in Las Vegas and the Dominican Republic capture him bluntly telling crowds that the song was “garbage,” “a piece of s**t,” and “the worst song that I have ever heard.” He would often turn to his band, roll his eyes, and openly wonder how a track so lyrically lazy could have saved his charting career.

In the 1960s, Frankie Valli was already a hit singer with classics like “Sherry” and “Rag Doll,” but his 1968 classic marked a shift for him vocally that almost didn’t become the hit it is today.

“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” is known for its sultry, smooth vocals with an undeniable sex appeal. It’s one of Valli’s biggest career hits that earned him a gold record and a No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In an interview with Parade, Valli recalls how the song helped him grow as a singer beyond his popular falsetto.

“I didn’t want to sing like that my whole life. Once we established the sound, the plan was that eventually I would do solo [records] and some things I really wanted to do. I was very lucky to make the transition to ‘My Eyes Adored You’ and ‘Swearin’ to God’, which had none of that,” he explained.

The hit track was written by the staple Four Seasons songwriting team of Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio, of which Valli was also a member. Valli even recalls the record company having kept “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” from being released for over a year, in fear that he was leaving the group.

Gaudio even told SongFacts that “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” was one of the hardest songs he ever had to write. It was thanks to Valli’s impressive vocal range that the track came to life, with Valli even once commenting its a “very, very tough song to do badly.”

“‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ was challenging. It dared to do something that was legit as a third rock, a third pop, a third MOR [Middle Of the Road]. It was a challenge: Does this work and how does this all come together and gel?” explained Gaudio.

“But it’s good challenge, because you have a talent like Frankie. Unique. One of the most unusual voices in the record business.”

The song almost wasn’t played on the radio, and it was the one that almost got away. It wasn’t until the record’s producers urged Paul Drew, the program director of CKLW, to listen to it for rotation. He wasn’t enthused about the track when listening to it, but changed his tune when hearing Valli play it live.

Gaudio explains that while the track alluded to eyeing a beautiful woman, it wasn’t inspired by one. It’s more about an “amalgam of people and circumstances” and situations that “people I’ve known have found themselves in.”

Valli’s original version ended up becoming a cover hit for multiple artists. Lauryn Hill covered the track in 1997 while heavily pregnant with her first child and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 41st Grammy Awards despite not having been released as a single.

“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” would also become a pop culture staple when Heath Ledger covered the song in the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You. He serenades Julia Stiles‘ character on the football field with the help of the marching band. It even led to be nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Musical Performance.

Demi Lovato is opening up about the emotional challenges they faced before returning to the stage, revealing how concerns about their changing body triggered anxiety ahead of their recent tour.

The singer, 34, discussed their experience during an appearance on Kerry Washington’s Street You Grew Up On podcast, released October 14. In an interview reported by USA TODAY, Lovato explained that gaining weight before their It’s Not That Deep Tour left them worried about how audiences might react.

“I had put on a little weight before the tour, and I was stressed,” Lovato recalled. “I was like, ‘I don’t want to go onstage. I’m terrified. People are going to say things. They’re going to write online.’”

Despite those fears, Lovato decided to perform. The audience’s response offered a powerful reminder that their worth was not tied to their appearance.

“I went onstage anyways. No one turned around. No one got up out of their seats and said, ‘She’s not a size 0,’” they said. Lovato added that fans continued to show their support and cried tears of joy during their performance.

The experience became an important lesson for the singer, who has spoken publicly about their eating disorder struggles for years.

During the podcast conversation, Lovato also acknowledged that recovery remains an ongoing process. They revealed that they had sought treatment several times but no longer viewed complete healing as a realistic goal.

“I think that food is going to be a battle for the rest of my life, but it’s a manageable battle,” they said.

Lovato also described finding greater acceptance of their body. While they admitted that some days remain difficult, they said they no longer look in the mirror and berate themselves for having curves.

“I’m 34. My worth isn’t in my body,” Lovato said, explaining that their family and husband love them for reasons beyond their physical appearance.

The singer added that they were proud of the progress they had made in their eating disorder recovery, even as they continued navigating its challenges.

When civic leaders in the small town of Carlinville, Illinois urged residents to come to the county courthouse for a festive photo shoot on Thursday, October 15, the community showed up in droves, thinking they were going to be featured in a Midwest Living magazine spread for the holidays.

But to their surprise, it was all a ruse to bring everyone together! Some of Hallmark Channel‘s biggest stars popped up instead to deliver the exciting news that Carlinville had been selected as the winner of Hallmark’s first-ever search for America’s “Merriest Christmas Town” after being named one of 25 finalists across the U.S. this summer.

Hallmark fan-favorites Erin Cahill, Jonathan Bennett, Tamera Mowry Housley, and Brendan Penny shocked residents by giving the town its new title and kicking off an epic celebration, complete with music, speeches, snacks, and photo ops with the stars.

Doug Downey, Mayor of Carlinville, was blown away by the honor. He said in a statement, “What makes Carlinville so special is the people who call it home. From our charming historic downtown and beloved holiday traditions to the warmth and community spirit of our residents, Carlinville truly embodies the magic of a Hallmark Christmas movie.”

That’s perfect, because the town’s prize is becoming the backdrop for a 2027 Hallmark Christmas movie, to be filmed in the community of 5,500. But Downey said the title of “Merriest Christmas Town” is sure to do even more than that for his town. He called it “an incredible honor, and we hope this recognition brings new visitors, opportunities and excitement to our community for years to come.”

Hallmark Channel’s head of programming, Michelle Vicary said in a statement, “We knew instantly that Carlinville captures the widely adored Hallmark charm that brings our fans such joy and warmth year-round, and the scores of fans who voted for this cozy town clearly agree. It will set the stage for the perfect Hallmark Christmas movie and even better, we’re confident that we will create meaningful connections with the wonderful people of Carlinville while making it.”

Videos posted to Hallmark Channel’s Instagram Stories showed Cahill, Bennett, Mowry Housley, and Penny celebrating with the crowd, including getting them pumped up from the stage, posing for photos with local youth, serving snacks, and guiding and dancing with a marching band and cheerleaders down the street, and leading a huge community “Merry Christmas” greeting.

More than 1,000 towns were nominated for the special distinction of being known as Hallmark’s “Merriest Christmas Town,” and Hallmark execs narrowed it down to 25 finalists. From there, fans had several weeks to vote online for their favorites.

The big event in Carlinville on October 15 was the perfect precursor to Hallmark’s October 16 kick-off of Countdown to Christmas, with round-the-clock holiday fare airing through December 20 and 34 new, original movies premiering throughout.

One-hit wonders sometimes have a more lasting impact than chart-topping singles, as the English rock band Roxy Music released a 1975 track with one of the most famous basslines and sounds that helped define the genre.

“Love Is the Drug” was one of Roxy Music’s standout tracks as they made a name for themselves across Europe in the 1970s. The song is considered to have foundational elements of the glam rock genre that landed it at No.2 on the UK chart. By the following year, the song made it to the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 30.

There was a lot that went into the creation of the song’s lyrics, with frontman Bryan Ferry having told The Wall Street Journal that his original idea for the track was about a “young guy getting into his car and zooming off into town, looking for action at a club.”

Anyone who listens to the song would be able to hear how it starts with the sound of something walking across gravel. In tune with his original idea, Ferry came up with the song’s opening based on his own driveway.

“Outside my house, I had a gravel drive, and the crunching sound of the stones under my shoes were an inspiration,” he said. “We found the different sounds for the opening on various sound-effects library recordings – a car door slamming shut, the engine starting, and so on. Then we overdubbed them.”

Ferry would also find inspiration in his Trinidadian friend, Christian, who worked as a wardrobe assistant for the band. Christian was an “amusing, laid-back” guy who would always say, “T’ain’t no big t’ing.” Ferry liked the phrase so much that it became the opening line of the song.

“Love Is the Drug” actually began as a slow-tempo melody by saxophonist Andy Mackay, until Ferry and drummer Paul Thompson made it “more dance-y.” Ferry was always interested in disco tracks and became frustrated when the clubs he frequented weren’t playing their music. The 1975 track was his effort to create “something where you’d see people actually getting up to dance.”

As a whole, the track became a rock inspiration with one of the most famous basslines by John Gustafson. He developed it while listening to the band, and it even went on to inspire Chic’s “Good Times,” which in turn inspired Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”.

“They’d start clanking away, or Bryan would start clanging away on his Fender keyboard. He was just banging away on D minor and I stood there to see what the rest of them would do,” he explained.

“The drums joined in and I waited for about five minutes thinking, and just hit it straight away. It was slightly different from the rhythm they were doing and it sort of jolted them out of it into this poppy funky thing, and we carried on like that.”

Collider ranked “Love Is the Drug” on their list of the Greatest Classic Rock Songs that were one-hit wonders. The Roxy Music classic became a pop culture staple years later when included in Martin Scorsese‘s Casino, Zack Snyder‘s Sucker Punch, and series like Sex Education, Luther, and Glee.

• The spangram describes the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. It may be two words.
• The spangram highlights in yellow when found.

Need a hint?

• Find non-theme words to get hints.
• For every three non-theme words you find, you earn a hint.

Ahead of the next season of Heated Rivalry, Hudson Williams will be in the hot seat for season 2 of Canada’s version of The Assembly. Alongside Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Jay Baruchel (This Is the End) and three-time Olympic gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin, Williams will be asked questions by autistic and neurodivergent interviewers where “no question is off the table.”

In the trailer for the CBC six-part series, Williams gets asked, “Did you ever feel something for [Heated Rivalry co-star] Connor [Storrie] that was more than friendship?”

Although Williams doesn’t answer the question in the trailer, he later discussed loneliness in it.

“I feel like when I’m kind of falling down that hole of being lonely, your friends and your family are like the climbing pegs that you pull yourself back into life by,” Williams said in the trailer.

The Assembly originated in France, and the format has been adapted by countries like the UK, Spain and Australia. Guests have ranged from Antonio Banderas to David Tennant, and each version has always featured autistic and neurodivergent interviewers.

“The response to The Assembly’s first season was incredible,” CBC’s Jennifer Dettman said to Deadline. “Our interviewers bring such a fresh, honest energy to the traditional talk show, and we’re excited to showcase more engaging conversations with some of the most well-known national and international celebrities.”

Williams’ appearance on The Assembly comes ahead of Heated Rivalry season 2, where he’ll join new cast members Justice Smith and Daniel Diemer, as well as recurring stars François Arnaud, Sophie Nélisse, Storrie and others. Season 2 is currently in production and is scheduled to release in spring 2027.

The new season of The Assembly will premiere on CBC Gem and CBC TV on Nov. 1 at 9 p.m. (ET). An extended producer’s cut will be released the same day.
