The Simple Question That Leaders Use To Defuse Any Conflict Fast
No matter where you work or what level your role, conflicts on the job are pretty commonplace. Sometimes issues arise between teams. Sometimes an employee is upset with a manager. Sometimes there are disagreements between individuals who work closely together. So, if you’re a leader—whether you manage one person or a big team—it’s important to have some tactics ready for handling disputes.
And while any disagreement is going to have its own details or nuances, some aspects are universal. To find out the best way to smooth over clashes with one simple question, Parade spoke to Dr. Maurie Kelly, an instructor at the Harvard University Division of Continuing Education in Professional and Executive Development and an instructor in the graduate program at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business. Her work includes seminars and courses on complex negotiations, leadership development and conflict resolution.
Dr. Kelly shares with us a simple question that can defuse conflicts fast, along with some examples of workplace scenarios in which her eight-word question works. She also reveals some other tips for approaching disagreements and what to do when talking things through isn’t enough.
Even if you aren’t dealing with a workplace conflict right now or aren’t in a leadership position, these tips could also be insightful for other types of clashes you might come across in your life—whether with a friend or when you need to sort out an issue on your own.

What Leaders Should Do Before Saying Anything in a Workplace ConflictBefore even trying to defuse the conflict, Dr. Kelly suggests leaders do something else first, and you might be able to guess what it is: listen.
“What I have found over the years is that when something is wrong and conflict occurs, people first and foremost want to be heard,” she explains. “So your first job isn’t to say something; your first job is to listen. Initially, what you will probably hear are positions: ‘I want this.’ ‘They did that.’ ‘This is what should happen.’ But those positions are usually masking something much more important: the underlying interests driving the conflict.”

A Simple Question: Why ‘What Matters Most to You in This Situation?’ Defuses Any Conflict FastAfter letting the person you are speaking with voice what happened and where they stand, it’s time to move the conversation forward with a simple question: “What matters most to you in this situation?”
“When you ask, ‘What matters most to you in this situation?’ you are trying to get beneath the position to discover what is really driving it,” Dr. Kelly tells Parade.
This means finding out more about why the person is upset or disappointed, as well as what they feel they are missing. Which leads us to…

The Psychology Behind Conflict: The 5 ‘Core Concerns’“Conflict often arises because something important to us isn’t being recognized,” Dr. Kelly states.
She points to the book Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate by Roger Fisher and Daniel Shapiro, which talks about five “core concerns” that “strongly influence how people react to one another.”
According to her, “Very often, one or more of these concerns is sitting underneath the conflict.”
They include:
- Appreciation: Do I feel heard and valued?
- Affiliation: Do I feel like we are on the same team?
- Autonomy: Do I have some control over decisions that affect me?
- Status: Do I feel respected?
- Role: Do I feel that my role is meaningful and understood?
To see how “What matters most to you in this situation?” can be put into action, Dr. Kelly shares a couple of examples of workplace disagreements.
1. Two separate departments blame each other for issues with a projectIn this example, two teams, Operations and Marketing, are having problems with a project and blaming each other: “Marketing says Operations is slowing everything down. Operations says Marketing keeps changing the requirements.”
Instead of a leader trying to determine which team is “right,” they can instead say to each group, “Help me understand what matters most to your team here.” In turn, they will likely be given two separate answers that are not actually in conflict with one another.
“Marketing may explain that they are under enormous pressure to meet a launch date. Operations may explain that they are worried that moving too quickly will affect quality and ultimately hurt customers,” Dr. Kelly explains. “Now we have something we can work with.”
Rather than the conversation being about blame, it’s now about how to “protect both the deadline and the quality of the product” with the goal being to “try to meet the needs of both sides fairly.”
2. An employee is upset after being passed over to lead a projectThis example is about a conflict between an employee and a manager after the manager appoints someone else to take the lead on a project.
“The leader’s instinct may be to defend the decision by stating why the other person was a more appropriate choice,” Dr. Kelly states.
But rather than doing that, she suggests using a version of the key question and saying something like, “It seems like you are feeling frustrated. Help me understand what’s most important to you about this.”
“The employee may explain that it isn’t really about this one assignment. They’re worried that their career has stalled or that their contributions aren’t being recognized,” she goes on.
As you can see, these issues fall into the “core concerns.”
With the real issue out in the open, “the manager and employee can talk about recognition, professional development, and future opportunities instead of arguing about one decision that has already been made.”
3 Other High-Impact Phrases Leaders Can Use To Defuse ConflictWhen solving a dispute, Dr. Kelly says the goal is to get someone to move from a “reactive mode,” which means conflict and agitation, to a “reflective mode,” which allows for problem solving. Outside of using certain phrases, she emphasizes the importance of the tone in which the person attempting to defuse the conflict is speaking.
“When people are in conflict, they tend to speak faster and more intensely. Leaders often unconsciously match that energy and suddenly everyone is escalating. Do the opposite,” she urges. “Slow down. Lower your voice. Leave some space between thoughts. It’s surprisingly difficult to maintain a high level of intensity when the person you’re talking to is operating at half your speed and intensity.”
Once the tone of the conversation is in a place where progress can be made, leaders can try these phrases:
1. “Tell me more about what’s going on and how this is affecting you…”This phrase is a clear way of showing curiosity about the other person’s needs, wants and feelings.
2. “What would a good outcome look like for you?”This simple question puts the focus of the conversation on problem-solving when the time is right.
3. “Here’s what I’m hearing… Do I have that right?”By asking this, leaders can make sure that they actually understand what they’re being told and let the employee know that they are being heard.
“You can also label the emotion you think you’re hearing: ‘It sounds like you’re feeling frustrated because you don’t feel you’ve been included in these decisions,'” Dr. Kelly says. “And give them a chance to respond. The important part is that you’re not telling someone how they feel. You’re checking your understanding and giving them an opportunity to correct you.”
“I think everyone just wants to know that they have been heard, they have had the chance to state their case, and there has been a meaningful discussion about it,” she adds. “Even when the final decision might not go their way, at least they had the chance to play a role in the situation and contributed their thoughts.”
How To Handle Workplace Conflict When a Phrase Isn’t Enough“Many workplace conflicts can be reduced when leaders intentionally create cultures that address the five ‘core concerns’ and regularly have interest-based conversations with their employees,” Dr. Kelly notes. “But sometimes talking isn’t enough. When the same conflict keeps resurfacing, leaders need to step back and ask whether the conflict they’re seeing is actually the problem or a symptom of something deeper.”
She suggests a tool she learned from author and negotiation expert William Ury called “going to the balcony.”
“Imagine that instead of standing on the stage in the middle of the conflict, you move up to the balcony of the theater and look down at everything happening below,” she explains. “You can see the people, relationships, pressures and patterns that are difficult to recognize when you’re standing in the middle of them.”
“From the balcony, a leader can ask: What is the core problem at hand in this situation?” she continues. “Is it bad communication, people feeling disrespected or excluded, unclear expectations, under-defined roles and responsibilities or are our organizational processes or culture contributing to the conflict?”
Leaders also may need to look inward and ask themselves, “What am I contributing to this situation?”
Outside of talking through it and using these tools, sometimes other types of help are needed. Jobs “may need to provide additional training, coach employees individually, or bring in a neutral facilitator to help resolve a particularly difficult conflict.”
“The goal isn’t to eliminate conflict. Healthy organizations have disagreement. In fact, disagreement can lead to better ideas and better decisions,” Dr. Kelly states. “The goal is to create an environment where people can disagree productively without damaging relationships.”
On top of that, she adds: “There is a longer-term benefit to handling conflict by using these tools and approaches: You aren’t just helping people resolve the problem in front of them—you are modeling and teaching them how to handle the next one.”

American Express Cardholders Just Got an Easier Way to Enter Airport Lounges
If you’ve ever stood in a long airport line trying to juggle your boarding pass, your carry-on, and your phone—only for your airport lounge app to freeze or your phone battery to dip to two percent—you know the exact brand of travel anxiety that comes with getting through the lounge doors.
While complimentary lounge access is easily one of the best perks of holding a premium travel card, keeping track of separate digital accounts and extra plastic cards is always a bit of a hassle.
Now, getting into a participating Priority Pass lounge just got a whole lot simpler for select American Express cardholders.
Instead of being required to show a dedicated physical or digital Priority Pass membership card, eligible enrolled travelers can now use their physical American Express card alongside their boarding pass to verify membership at participating airport lounges.
As personal finance writer Choncé Maddox reported for Kiplinger, “The update doesn’t expand lounge access or change existing benefits. It simply gives eligible cardholders another way to verify their membership, potentially making lounge access a little easier.”
Related: Amex Is Opening Three New Lounges at These Major U.S. Airports
View this post on Instagram How the New Access Verification WorksPriority Pass, the independent airport lounge network that partners with major card issuers, has officially added a bank-issued payment card to its recognized verification methods, sitting right alongside its traditional plastic membership cards and digital passes.
However, there is important fine print to keep in mind before you head to the terminal.
First, simply carrying an Amex in your wallet does not automatically unlock the door. The feature is reserved for cardholders who receive a Priority Pass Select membership as a built-in benefit of an eligible card—such as The Platinum Card from American Express, The Business Platinum Card, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card, or select corporate Platinum products—and who have already officially enrolled in the Priority Pass program through their account.
Priority Pass itself describes the payment-card entry as “an exclusive feature for eligible card-linked memberships” and notes that not every individual lounge location in its worldwide network accepts this method yet. For those whose physical Priority Pass cards are nearing their expiration date, current cards will remain active until they expire, after which members can rely on their digital credentials or their qualifying Amex card.

Why Keeping the Physical Card in Your Wallet MattersIn an era where most travelers rely entirely on digital mobile wallets, carrying a physical credit card might feel a bit old-school, but it serves as an invaluable travel safety net.
Airport Wi-Fi is notoriously unpredictable, apps can crash during system updates, and phone batteries drain quickly when you are checking flight boards and navigating terminals. Priority Pass specifically encourages travelers whose devices run out of juice to use an accepted physical card to gain entry, turning your primary travel card into an effortless backup plan.
Before your next flight, it is still a smart idea to double-check the Priority Pass app to look up specific lounge locations, confirm current operating hours and guest capacity limits, and verify that your intended lounge accepts direct payment-card entry. You will still need to have your government ID and same-day boarding pass ready at the check-in desk, but having one less dedicated membership card to stress about is a welcome travel win.

Quote of the Day: Philosopher Socrates on ‘An Eye for an Eye’ Mentality— ‘One Should Never Do Wrong in Return…'
Socrates is one of the most notable philosophers of all time. He’s from the Classical Athens period of ancient Greece, which was about the fifth to fourth centuries BCE. He was born in 470 BCE and became a massive influence on Classical antiquity and Western philosophy through his thoughts, ideals and character, per Britannica. Many schools of ancient philosophy wanted to claim him as part of their philosophical teachers, per History.com, and his teachings, such as the Socratic problem or Socratic method, live on through the recounting by his students, since he didn’t write anything down. Our quote of the day comes from one of Plato’s writings about Socrates’s last interactions before his death, where he tells a friend that he believes retaliation and revenge are wrong.
Like many famous thinkers who didn’t live to see their work celebrated, he was heavily mocked while alive. As History.com reported, Socrates ran into political issues because he had friends on many sides and for his act of civil disobedience to the Athenian government. He was then indicted on the crimes of failing to honor the Athenian gods (impiety) and for “corrupting the youth,” basically put on trial for his ideas and his teachings.
Plato was Socrates’s most notable pupil, and most of what we know of him is thanks to Plato’s and Xenophon’s (another student) writings, per History.com. They wrote down the “most significant accounts” of Socrates, his life and his philosophy, and his teachings can still be taken to heart today.
Quote of the Day by SocratesCanvaPro/Parade
“One should never do wrong in return, nor mistreat any man, no matter how one has been mistreated by him.”
This quote comes from Crito, written by ancient Greek philosopher Plato, specifically the translation done by G.M.A. Grube, a scholar and professor.
This is all a dialogue between Socrates and Crito of Alopece, a wealthy friend who is offering to help finance Socrates’s escape from prison, where he is during this conversation in 399 BCE. Socrates goes on a long tirade about how injustice is not the answer for injustice and personifies the laws of Athens to make his point to Crito. There’s discourse on whether he’s arguing for “unconditional obedience” to the laws of a society or not, but here he is definitely arguing that even if they think the charge is unfair, they can’t fix the situation by breaking him out of prison, which in itself is unlawful.
As seen in another translation by Benjamin Jowett, this quote comes before a big hypothetical point Socrates is making about Athenian law (saying if the “law could speak,” this is what she’d say about Crito’s plan).
“Then we ought not to retaliate or render evil for evil to anyone, whatever evil we may have suffered from him.”
Socrates then ends it with the “voice” that’s always “murmuring in [his] ears,” describing a “humming” conscience that he cannot deviate from.
“Think not of life and children first, and of justice afterwards, but of justice first, that you may be justified before the princes of the world below. For neither will you nor any that belong to you be happier or holier or juster in this life, or happier in another, if you do as Crito bids. Now you depart in innocence, a sufferer and not a doer of evil; a victim, not of the laws, but of men. But if you go forth, returning evil for evil, and injury for injury, breaking the covenants and agreements which you have made with us, and wronging those whom you ought least to wrong, that is to say, yourself, your friends, your country, and us, we shall be angry with you while you live, and our brethren, the laws in the world below, will receive you as an enemy; for they will know that you have done your best to destroy us. Listen, then, to us and not to Crito.”
Related: Quote of the Day: Stoic Philosopher Epictetus on Embracing the Unknown and Letting Go of Control
Deeper Meaning of Socrates’s Quote—Retaliation Gets You Nowhere GoodWhile sitting in a prison in ancient Greece, Socrates was still determined to live and die with his morals intact. So, as he says in the last paragraph we shared, he doesn’t want to go “tit for tat” or “an eye for an eye,” even if the other person is wrong. He’d rather die a victim of people rather than of the law, with no “evil” done on his behalf (or by Socrates himself).
Whether you think Socrates was arguing that you should always, without question, follow the rules of society is up to you. But taking the quote at face value, Socrates is saying that it’s never okay to do wrong as retaliation for something bad done to you. No matter how badly you were mistreated, you should stick to your ethics and not sacrifice who you are or your goodness in order to “get back” at the other person.
Some might say that if injustice was done to Socrates by wrongly being convicted of impiety, he wouldn’t be compromising his soul or morals by taking Crito up on his offer to escape prison. However, to Socrates, living truthfully and by his standards is of the utmost importance, and why he tells Crito that going the “eye for an eye” route really will make the whole world blind.

More Quotes from Socrates- “I only wish that wisdom were the kind of thing that flowed… from the vessel that was full to the one that was empty.”
- “It would be better for me… that multitudes of men should disagree with me rather than that I, being one, should be out of harmony with myself.”
- “In every one of us there are two ruling and directing principles, whose guidance we follow wherever they may lead; the one being an innate desire of pleasure; the other, an acquired judgment which aspires after excellence.”
- “Nothing is to be preferred before justice”
- “I myself know nothing, except just a little, enough to extract an argument from another man who is wise and to receive it fairly.”
- “Bad men live that they may eat and drink, whereas good men eat and drink that they may live.”

Your Rug May Be Making Your Small Living Room Look Smaller—Designers Explain Why
As someone who lives in a studio apartment I’m always looking for ways to make my hybrid bedroom-living room space feel a bit bigger.
Personally, I enjoy rearranging my furniture and home furnishings every few months, hoping that it will unlock a new, more spacious version of my home; however, in my small apartment, there aren’t many other arrangement options. That said, I’m always open to ideas and upgrades that may help my space feel larger!
So, to find out a few tricks to make a living room look bigger, I turned to two interior designers: Jessica Nelson, the founder of full service interior design firm Jessica Nelson Design in Seattle, and Kate Longley, the Principal Designer and Founder at Kate Longley Designs in Arizona.

Both Nelson and Longley agree on one small change that can make a small living room look twice as big; plus, they have a few other tips that can also make a living room look larger.
And interestingly, a lot of these tips are actually visual tricks. “If you cannot make the space physically larger,” says Longley, “you’re trying to trick your eye.”
Keep reading for their insights!

This One Swap Makes a Small Living Room Look Twice as Big, According to Interior DesignersNelson and Longley concur that to make a small living room feel larger, you should swap out a small area rug for a large area rug.
“A rug that is too small chops up the room visually,” explains Longley.
“Rug size is one of the easiest and most impactful changes that will make your small living room look twice as big,” adds Nelson. “A larger rug tricks your eye to see a larger, more unified area, while a smaller rug creates more visual changes in the room. The most common mistake I see homeowners make is using too small of a rug, so don’t be afraid to go larger here as long as there’s still some breathing room along the walls.”
How to arrange a large rug in a small living roomIdeally, all four legs of your sofa (or at least the front legs!) should be on the rug, and you should leave at least 1 to 1.5 feet of exposed flooring between the rug and the walls, according to Nelson.
“This helps ground the room and make the furniture feel collected, not floating in space,” she explains.
Longley has a very similar take when it comes to rug sizes in small living rooms.
“Ideally, all furniture should sit all the way on the rug, or at least the front legs,” she says. “The rug should extend past the sides of the furniture at least 12 inches to the right and left of the sofa, chair or table.”

Other Tricks to Make a Small Living Room Look Twice as Big, According to Designers 1. Use furniture with exposed legs or glass topsThe Good Brigade / Getty Images
Rather than furniture that goes all the way to the floor, opting for pieces with exposed legs can help a room feel more spacious.
“Allowing light, air and your eye to easily move around and under a piece tricks your brain into seeing more space and thinking the room is more open,” explains Nelson.
Similarly, “glass coffee tables and side tables also take up less visual space,” according to Longley. “That’s a good ‘trick’ that fools the eye and makes it seem larger.”

2. Use larger scale furnitureEMS-FORSTER-PRODUCTIONS / Getty Images
According to Longley, you can “use larger scale furniture like you would in a larger room, but less of it,” and this will help the room feel bigger.
“People make the mistake of using smaller pieces (tiny furniture) and trying to fit too much in,” she explains. “Maybe in a living room you just have a small sofa with an attached chaise, a chair and a coffee table—instead of a smaller sofa, two smaller chairs, a coffee table, and small side tables. The more pieces, the more cramped it feels.”
3. Use a monochromatic color schemeElizaveta Starkova / Getty Images
A room with a monochromatic color scheme is one where most of the main fixtures (such as the couch, curtains and rug) are all in the same color.
“Using a monochromatic color scheme reduces high contrast lines and allows your eyes to move smoothly across a space,” explains Nelson. “This change can cut down on visual clutter so the room feels more open.”
4. Use an oversized mirrorGrigorev_Vladimir / Getty Images
“Large mirrors can make the room look twice as big without adding square footage,” says Longley. That’s because a large mirror can create the illusion of more space, as well as make a room brighter by reflecting more light.

5. Mount your curtain rods using this trickGalina Zhigalova / Getty Images
Nelson recommends buying curtains that are “taller and wider than your windows,” and mounting curtain rods to support them. Doing this “not only gives the impression of larger scale windows, but allows more light to flow into the room” when the curtains are open.
Longley also recommends this trick for hanging curtains in small spaces.
“When you hang drapes at or close to the ceiling, it makes the ceilings feel taller,” adds Longley. “I find clients have often hung their drapes right above the top of the window instead. Additionally, you should have the rod extend about a foot on either side of the window. This makes the windows and ceiling appear larger.”
6. Put furniture in the center of the roomNelson notes that a common mistake people make in small living rooms is putting furniture right up against the wall.
“While more space in the center of the room may seem like it’d make the room feel larger,” explains Nelson, “allowing a little bit of space (even an inch or two) to breathe between a furniture piece and the wall allows more light and air to move around the room.”

Aldi's 2-Tier Floral Server Brings Dainty Fall Energy to Your Table
When we think about fall colors, our minds tend to go straight to the brooding bunch: deep rusts, mossy olives, rich burgundies and every shade of brown in between. They’re beautiful, certainly, but after months of summer’s bright, in-your-face hues, the traditional autumn palette can feel like someone dimmed the lights a little too soon. Suddenly, everything is very serious. Very sophisticated. Very “I have a bowl of decorative gourds and big feelings.”
But who says fall has to be so moody? There’s plenty of room for a lighter, more playful take on the season, especially when it comes to entertaining. Think autumnal florals in softer, cheerier shades that nod to falling leaves and crisp evenings without making your table look like it’s preparing for hibernation.

Crofton Harvest Two Tiered Tray – Autumn Floral, $14.99 at Aldi Crofton Harvest Two Tiered TrayAldi
That’s why Aldi’s new two-tier server swoops in like a breath of fresh air. With its pretty floral design and distinctly autumnal feel, it embraces the season without getting bogged down in all those heavy hues. It’s a little bit fall, a little bit flower garden and a whole lot more fun—proving that seasonal decorating can have a sunnier side, too.

A tiered server may sound like something that comes out only when company’s coming, but this one has plenty of uses beyond piling it with snacks. Load it up with crackers, cheese, nuts and caramel corn for a casual fall happy hour, or make it the star of dessert with cookies, brownies, mini pies or other seasonal treats. It could also pull double duty at breakfast, holding muffins and fruit, or on a coffee or cocoa bar with mugs on one tier and marshmallows, cinnamon sticks and other mix-ins on the other.
But don’t feel like you have to serve anything on it at all. The autumn floral design makes it cute enough to use as seasonal decor on a kitchen counter, dining table or entryway. Fill it with mini pumpkins, gourds or faux flowers, or use it as a pretty little catchall for everyday odds and ends. Basically, it’s part serving piece, part fall decoration and one more excuse to make your countertops look a little more festive without covering every available surface in pumpkins (though there’s no shame if you go that route).
Aldi’s Crofton Two-Tier Server is $14.99 and will hit the store’s “Finds” aisle on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

New Pokémon Movie Is Coming After Franchise Marks 30 Years
Fans devoted to a certain franchise have until next year to “catch ’em all.” That is, if they want to be finished by the time a new Pokémon hits theaters.
The beloved universe has been celebrating its 30th anniversary all year, as die-hards are well aware. And on Sunday night, August 30, a new teaser dropped for Pokémon: Wild Card, which is “coming 2027 and beyond.”
The 39-second spot features a shimmering card, a shimmering Pokémon and a trading-card player — followed by the title cards, of course, that reveal the 2027 release date and movie title itself. As it turns out, the Pokémon and player could be one and the same: Mimikyu, who disguises itself as the iconic Pikachu, yet its true form is hidden below its yellow clothing.
“Get ready for Pokémon: Wild Card, an all-new animated film featuring a Pokémon TCG player and Mimikyu! Stay tuned! 🎬” reads the caption of the YouTube upload’s caption. See below.
Fans have already flooded the post’s comments section to express their excitement and intrigue. “Art style looks amazing,” wrote one YouTube user, while another person commented, “Finally a new movie. Been wanting one for years.”
Variety reports that the film was announced during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, held in San Francisco. Wild Card is the first Pokémon movie made since Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, which was released on Netflix in 2021.
Pokémon Has Made the Rounds Amid Its 30-Year MilestoneEarlier this month, to celebrate the celebrated video-game and trading-card franchise’s anniversary, Polaroid officially announced its biggest collaboration yet: a nostalgic collection that brings together the magic of photography with Pokémon.
The lineup features three limited edition Polaroid cameras, exclusive i-Type and Go film packs, and a range of collectible accessories. Each film pack includes custom Pokémon dark slides featuring different fan-favorite characters, turning every pack into a keepsake long after photos are developed. Find out more here.
'80s Rock Legend, Who Helped The Go-Go's Rule the Billboard Charts, Turns 69
The Go-Go’s didn’t just become one of the biggest bands of the early 1980s. They also made Billboard history, and Gina Schock was there for it.
Schock turns 69 on Monday, August 31. Growing up in Dundalk, Maryland, Schock started playing drums at 13. After school, she’d put on her headphones and practice for hours at a time.
Her first professional experience came with the Baltimore-area band Scratch N Sniff. She later played with the punk group Edie and the Eggs, led by Edith Massey, the actress and singer who became a fixture in John Waters‘ films.
The group eventually toured the country, including performances in Los Angeles. Charlotte Caffey, who would later become a founding member of The Go-Go’s, saw Schock play during one of those shows.
Schock soon moved to Los Angeles herself. Not long after arriving, she attended a Go-Go’s show and met members of the band at a party. The timing worked out because the group was looking for a new drummer, and Schock joined in 1979, replacing Elissa Bello.
By the time The Go-Go’s signed with I.R.S. Records in 1981, they had already built a loyal following in Los Angeles. Their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, quickly changed the trajectory of the band.
Released in 1981, the record spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in March 1982, making The Go-Go’s the first all-female band to write their own songs, play their own instruments and reach No. 1 on the U.S. album chart.
The album also gave fans two of The Go-Go’s best-known songs, “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed.” Over their initial run, the band landed seven singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including later hits like “Vacation” and “Head Over Heels.”
Their rise was notable not only because they were an all-female group, but because they were musicians who wrote and performed their own material in a male-dominated rock scene.
However, the success didn’t last forever. The Go-Go’s released Vacation later in 1982 and Talk Show in 1984 before breaking up in 1985. The members later reunited several times and eventually returned to performing together more regularly.
Schock has remained proud of what the band accomplished and what it represented for women in rock. “That kind of stuff isn’t just a victory for our group; it’s for all our people, the punks and the rejects,” Schock told the San Francisco Chronicle. “We’ve gone against the grain from the beginning.”
She has also reflected on how the band’s significance grew over time. “I knew being an all-girl band meant something then, but I didn’t realize it would mean so much all these years later,” Schock said.
In 2021, the Go-Go’s added one of the biggest honors in music to an already impressive career when they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Even after all these years, Schock still sees something special when The Go-Go’s play together. “There’s this fantastic chemistry that we have, where we just bounce off of each other,” she told V Magazine. “We’re still together, and there’s a reason. I’m not sure what that reason is other than to say, we’re a family.”

Home Inspectors Say You Should Check These 7 Things Before Fall Arrives
As fall approaches, there’s one major change a lot of us are getting ready to make at home: switching from air conditioning to heating.
That said, there are actually a few other things homeowners and renters should check before the weather cools down for fall besides just their HVAC systems.
To learn more, we spoke with two professional home inspectors: Cameron Figgins, Owner, President and Founder of Absolute Maintenance and Consulting in Los Angeles, and Jonathan Ayala, a licensed home inspector in New Jersey and the founder of Real Estate Photography.

“Performing routine maintenance on your home is crucial to maintaining your home’s value,” Ayala tells Parade.
Both Figgins and Ayala shared a number of spots around the house that you should inspect before fall starts, along with tips on how to check them. Keep reading to learn more.

Why It’s Important to Conduct Home Checks Before Fall“One of the best times to do a maintenance check is in the fall so you can get ahead of issues caused by the changing weather that stress your roof, exterior, plumbing or heating systems,” explains Ayala.
“Conducting regular home inspections before fall is essential as it helps identify possible threats that could lead to greater problems in the future,” says Figgins.
“This includes checking all the conditions related to water penetration, dampness and decay, which can jeopardize the quality of a residential building or structure,” he adds. “By addressing these issues early, homeowners can maintain their properties and avoid larger scale problems down the line.”

7 Things Homeowners Should Check Before Fall Arrives, According to Home Inspectors 1. Gutters“It is essential to inspect and evaluate gutters and drainage systems to ensure they are free from blockages and leaks,” says Figgins. “This is because the gutters play a significant role in ensuring water runs off the building and into the drainpipes.”
If you find a clogged gutter, it could “cause water to seep into the house structure, damaging the walls, foundations and other components,” says Figgins. Ayala adds that clogged gutters can also cause significant damage to the roof.
Any clogged gutters you find should be cleared right away. You should make sure the water is “flowing correctly down the drainpipes,” per Figgins, and you should “direct the water from downspouts to be several feet away from the foundation,” adds Ayala.
2. RoofaquaArts studio / Getty Images
“Homeowners should inspect their roofs to check for defects and replace any damaged parts,” advises Figgins. “This will ensure that the roof protects the house structure from severe weather such as heavy rains and extreme temperatures. While minor damages are easy to identify, it is advisable to contact a professional to handle the problem if the roof is faulty or damaged.”
You can start the roof inspection process from your yard, says Ayala. “From the ground, inspect the roof for damage,” he says. “Look for missing or damaged shingles [and] deteriorated flashing.”

3. Window and door seals“The seals along windows and doors should be checked for cracks, ensuring they are not broken or defective,” says Figgins. “This is important as broken seals allow water and dampness to get inside the house structure, thereby damaging it in the process. In addition, broken seals also mean the home will be difficult to maintain and control its internal temperature.”
Ayala agrees adding that you should “check the exterior doors and windows for damaged seals, gaps, or cracks in the frames to check for problems that can allow cold air or moisture into the home. These problems also cause the heating system to work more to heat the home.”
To investigate the window and door seals, Ayala says you can simply open and close each window and door “to make sure it functions the way it is supposed to. Look around the frames for gaps and deterioration of caulking to check for damage, then replace the weatherstripping.”
4. Heating system“Homeowners should have their heating systems checked and serviced before the first cold weather,” recommends Ayala. “Waiting until the heating system breaks down to fix it can result in costly replacement of expensive heating components. Addressing the system before the first cold weather can make the system run more efficiently.”
To do this, you should check and clean your HVAC filter, make sure all vents are clear of obstruction and set the thermostat to heat before the cold weather arrives. If your heating system is due for service, make sure to schedule that sooner rather than later.
Related: The Most Affordable Homes Are in These 17 States, Realtors Reveal
5. Plumbing“Autumn is a great time to look for leaky plumbing and piping that may be exposed to freezing temperatures,” advises Ayala. “Leaky pipes can cause serious water damage to your home, while piping that does not have adequate protection can lead to the freezing of water and cause your pipes to burst.”
To inspect your pipes, you should look for water leaks, signs of corrosion or rust, moisture buildup and missing pipe insulation.
This is especially important in colder rooms like the basement and crawlspace, adds Figgins. In these rooms, the “presence of dampness is an indication that there may be an issue with the house structure, and homeowners should look out for smells and staining while inspecting these areas.”
6. Exterior walls“Exterior walls and coatings should be checked for cracks and other imperfections that may allow water to penetrate and cause damage to the house structure,” says Figgins.
“The walls and coatings protect the building from external forces,” he explains, “making it advisable to inspect them and replace any defective materials.” You can do this simply by walking around your house and looking for any visible damage.

7. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectorsAccording to Ayala, you should test your smoke detectors and and carbon monoxide detectors at least once annually, and “fall is a great time to check these before homeowners start using their HVAC equipment.”
Many detectors are outfitted with a “test” button, making testing them easy. If yours doesn’t have a button, you’ll need to take the detector off the wall and test the batteries. You should also check the detector’s age and make sure to replace it when the manufacturer advises.

'Days of Thunder' Star Randy Quaid Reacts to Anne Hathaway Casting
Better late than never, they say. So when word got out that a Days of Thunder sequel was in the works, fans of certain generations were certainly delighted.
More recently, it was announced that Anne Hathaway is now joining Tom Cruise for follow-up to the 1990 NASCAR film, which also starred Nicole Kidman and Randy Quaid.
And on Sunday, August 30, Dennis Quaid‘s eccentric brother, 75, took to social media to share his, shall we say, unfiltered thoughts on Days of Thunder 2 casting Hathaway, 43, alongside Cruise, 64.
“Anne Hathaway is a leftist, woke, horrible choice for DAYS OF THUNDER NASCAR audience who are MAGA,” Randy wrote in his recent X post. “The sexy older chick for Tom in this film needs to be Nicole [Kidman]. That’s the casting that would sell the idea.”
Randy also addressed the making of the first movie in his fiery tweet Sunday, adding, “It’s interesting because when we made the first one there was also a rush to get it out; editors slept in the cutting room on shifts. This is a weird thing, like they want it to come out and tank.”

Last Original Member of Iconic '70s Rock Band, Founded When He Was Just 16, Turns 78
In 1965, Rudolf Schenker was just 16 years old when he founded the band that would eventually become Scorpions, launching a musical journey that has now stretched across more than six decades.
On Monday, Aug. 31, the German guitarist and songwriter celebrates his 78th birthday, and remarkably, he’s still a member of the band he started as a teenager. Schenker is Scorpions’ sole remaining original member and has been the one constant throughout the group’s long history.
It has been quite a history. Scorpions went from a young German group playing covers of acts like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Everly Brothers and the Ventures to one of the most successful hard rock bands in the world, eventually selling an estimated 100 million records.
Rudolf Schenker Founded Scorpions at Just 16Schenker founded the group with several school friends in Hanover, Germany, in January 1965, initially calling themselves the Nameless before settling on Scorpions later that year. In those early days, Schenker even handled some of the vocals as the fledgling group absorbed the sounds of the British Invasion.
The band’s path from there was anything but straightforward.
By 1969, Klaus Meine had joined as lead singer, while Schenker’s younger brother Michael Schenker came aboard as lead guitarist. The lineup recorded Scorpions’ debut album Lonesome Crow in 1972, but Michael soon departed for UFO.
His departure ultimately led to the breakup of that version of Scorpions. Rudolf joined forces with guitarist Uli Jon Roth and members of Roth’s band Dawn Road, eventually bringing Meine into the fold. Although the new group contained more Dawn Road members than Scorpions members, they retained the Scorpions name because it was already known on the German hard rock scene.
It turned out to be a pretty consequential decision.
“The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll” would later describe Scorpions as “the most popular rock band to come out of Germany,” noting that the group emerged as a leading heavy-metal band during the mid-’80s.

Scorpions Finally Broke Through in America With ‘Lovedrive’Scorpions had already built a following in Europe during the 1970s with albums including Fly to the Rainbow, In Trance, Virgin Killer and Taken by Force, but American success remained elusive.
That began to change with 1979’s Lovedrive. According to “The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll,” it became Scorpions’ first record for Mercury and their first album to chart in the United States.
The floodgates soon opened.
Blackout arrived in 1982 and became the band’s best-selling album to that point, eventually going platinum in the U.S. on the back of hit song “No One Like You.” Two years later, Love at First Sting propelled Scorpions even higher behind “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” with the album ultimately going double platinum in the United States.
Other enduring songs followed, including “Still Loving You,” “Rhythm of Love,” “Wind of Change” and “Send Me an Angel.”
Through every lineup change and musical evolution, Schenker remained.
Why Rudolf Schenker Refused to Become a ‘Band of Yesterday’Perhaps part of the secret to Schenker’s longevity is that he never seemed particularly interested in turning Scorpions into a museum piece.
In a 2008 interview with Brett Emerson of Second Supper, Schenker reflected on how dramatically the recording industry had changed since the band’s early days. He recalled an era when Scorpions might play a song in the studio “50, 80, 100 times” while searching for what he called “that magic moment.”
But he wasn’t interested in simply recreating the past.
“We don’t want to be a band of yesterday; we want to be a band of today,” Schenker said, explaining that musicians had to embrace new possibilities without losing their own identity.
He expressed much the same philosophy when discussing his influences, saying that even after decades in music, he remained open to newer bands and sounds.
“If you’re always the same in a changing world, you’re losing,” Schenker said. “You’re going backwards to a world that doesn’t exist anymore.”
Nearly two decades after that interview, the philosophy appears to have served him well.
Scorpions celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2025, six decades after a 16-year-old Schenker first put the band together. Their most recent studio album Rock Believer arrived in 2022, while Coming Home Live followed in December 2025.
And Schenker, the teenager who started it all, is still there at 78.
1981 Ballad, Turned Into a Massive Hit by Chris Stapleton, Made Country Music History
Chris Stapleton wasn’t the first country artist to record “Tennessee Whiskey” — but it was his cover that brought the song to impressive new heights.
Stapleton, 48, released his version of the beloved country standard in 2015 as part of his Traveller album, and just over a decade later, he reached a major milestone that few songs have ever achieved.
Earlier this year, Stapleton’s version of “Tennessee Whiskey” was certified Double Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), becoming the first-ever country song to do so. The esteemed certification from the RIAA signifies over 20 million units sold, which no other song in the genre’s history has ever achieved.
Written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove, “Tennessee Whiskey” was first recorded by David Allan Coe for his 1981 studio album of the same. Just two years later, the classic country ballad was covered by none other than George Jones, who brought it to No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.
But it was Stapleton’s soulful version of the bluesy country track that made country music history.

In addition to being the first country song to achieve Double Diamond status, Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” is only the third song across all genres to ever reach the milestone, along with Post Malone & Swae Lee‘s 2018 hit “SUNFLOWER” and Bruno Mars‘ 2010 smash “Just the Way You Are.”
Stapleton was celebrated by the RIAA after the certification was officially announced in January.
“Chris Stapleton’s undeniable vocal grit and storytelling have connected deeply – driving chart successes, earning major awards, and most importantly, resonating with fans,” said RIAA Chairman & CEO Mitch Glazier in a statement shared with Parade at the time. “RIAA is proud to celebrate him alongside MCA as ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ today makes history, becoming the first Country single ever to earn a Double Diamond certification with two million units in the U.S. alone.”
View this post on InstagramI Tried Lymphatic Walking Every Day for 2 Weeks—Here’s What Happened to My Bloating and Energy
If walking is your primary form of exercise, it’s common to focus on logging daily steps or miles. Tracking these stats ensures you’re being consistent with and mindful of your weekly fitness goals, and that’s important. But there are other factors when walking that are just as impactful yet often overlooked. Enter lymphatic walking.
Lymphatic walking has gained much traction on social media—and on the pavement—for good reason. The added health benefits cannot be denied. This form of exercise adds intentional, relaxed breathing, solid posture and a smooth rhythm to your stride, giving your step count a wellness upgrade while supporting lymphatic system movement.
“Lymphatic walking is praised for its simple and accessible nature. It offers a straightforward, low-barrier way for people to target bloating, swelling and sluggishness,” explains David J. Sautter, NASM-certified personal trainer and sports conditioning specialist with WalkFit. “Gentle, rhythmic movement counteracts this by boosting blood flow, stimulating the gut and releasing endorphins that lift energy and mood.”
Since walking is one of my go-to forms of exercise and I deal with occasional bloating, I was eager to learn everything about lymphatic walking and whether it would be a smart addition to my routine. I already walk every day, so it was a simple two-week test. If you’re curious about my lymphatic walking results and how you can get started, read on to learn about my journey.

What Is Lymphatic Walking (And Why Is It Trending Everywhere)?Lymphatic walking involves taking your pace down to a slow, intentional rhythm and adding controlled arm movement. You know the saying, “Slow and steady wins the race!” This is incredibly relevant when it comes to lymphatic walking.
Although this form of walking may seem like a classic stroll, lymphatic walking focuses on relaxed diaphragmatic breathing while taking gentle, deliberate steps. Using good posture is essential to help the body move seamlessly and avoid fatigue.
“This is where it differs from a brisk power walk, as it should feel restorative rather than strenuous,” Sautter points out.
Why has lymphatic walking made waves recently? According to Dr. Mikel Daniels, DPM, MBA, FACFAS, board-certified podiatrist and chief medical officer with WeTreatFeet Podiatry, the physiology is actually not brand-new. Engaging in gentle movement like walking has always been considered one of the most effective ways to help move lymphatic fluid (which is made up of minerals, proteins, fats, germs and cells) throughout the body.
“What has changed is the packaging and the fact that a lot of people feel chronically puffy. This is from our lifestyles, things like sitting at desks or standing on hard floors all day in less than ideal shoes,” explains Dr. Daniels. “Patients don’t want high-intensity workouts when they’re already tired. This type of exercise that includes slow, easy walking might help [with] bloating and energy.”
While getting in your daily steps can help support lymphatic drainage and digestion, keep in mind that it isn’t a magical solution for bloating. If you experience prolonged bloating and discomfort, it’s important to reach out to your healthcare provider.
The Science: How Walking Actually Activates Your Lymphatic SystemI didn’t realize that adding these little tweaks to my daily walks could make such a positive difference. With lymphatic walking, your legs are moving in the same manner; you’re basically just adding the right breathing techniques and arm work to help your lymphatic system do its job.
“[Lymphatic walking] optimizes the movement of lymph fluid around the body. Unlike the cardiovascular system, which relies on the heart, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a central pump. Instead, the circulation of lymph around the body is supported by muscle contractions, deep breathing and regular body movements,” explains Sautter.

How To Do Lymphatic Walking: The Technique, Posture and Breathing CuesI was anxious to start lymphatic walking and learned from Dr. Daniels exactly how to do it.
PostureThe first thing he stresses is posture. Your spine should be long and your chest expandable. To do this, pretend a string is pulling the top of your head softly toward the sky. Pull your shoulders down and away from your ears to promote solid posture.
PaceKeep in mind that you’re not power walking, but rather maintaining a medium, comfortable pace. You should be able to comfortably converse without feeling out of breath.
TechniqueLet’s break down proper lymphatic drainage walking technique. Your stride should be natural while aiming for a complete heel-to-toe roll through each foot as you step forward. Swing your arms freely at your sides as your torso rotates naturally.
BreathingThis is a biggie. Dr. Daniels advises inhaling slowly through your nose every three to four steps, allowing your belly to rise. Exhale through your mouth or nose for four to six steps.
“That diaphragmatic motion acts like a piston on the thoracic duct and helps move lymph centrally (it also helps with resetting the vagus nerve, but that is another issue). If someone is very stiff across the shoulders and upper back, I’ll have them stop every few minutes, do a few gentle shoulder rolls and maybe a chest opening stretch, then keep walking. Those little add-ons are straight out of the lymph drainage exercise playbook,” Dr. Daniels explains.
Simply put, stand tall, step softly, swing your arms and breathe slow.
My 14-Day Routine: What I Did Each DayMy typical summer walking routine involves lacing up my sneakers, doing a few stretches and heading out for a mixed terrain route throughout my neighborhood, local community and trails along my travels. I usually walk for 30 to 45 minutes, but I started lymphatic walking for 15 minutes per day the first week and progressed to 30 minutes each day the second week, all while being mindful of my posture, breathing and technique.
I’m a morning person, so after my cup of joe, I carved out time for my lymphatic walking routine around 9 a.m. I’m also a firm believer that kickstarting the morning with a feel-good activity like walking can promote other healthy habits throughout the rest of the day.

The Results: Changes in Bloating, Leg Swelling and Energy LevelsIf you’re wondering, “Does lymphatic walking work?” I can confidently say I experienced certain benefits in just two weeks of sticking to my routine.
First off, I have a sensitive stomach and regularly experience bloating. That’s why I genuinely enjoy moving my body first thing in the morning. By my second week of lymphatic walking, I started to feel a bit lighter on my feet and less bloated after each walk.
While I don’t experience swollen legs, Dr. Daniels offers some promising insight for those who do: “Lymphatic drainage interventions in general are known to reduce swelling and water retention, which lines up with what people report when they pair daily walking with better breathing.”
What I do experience is fatigue when I wake up in the morning, even after a seemingly good night’s rest. By the end of week one, I absolutely felt more energized in the mornings. Combining low-intensity exercise and deep breathing clearly gave my oxygen delivery and circulation a solid boost.
By the end of week one, I fell asleep faster and slept better all-around, which was a big win for me. This year has been my year of wellness and adding more physical activity to my routine in general has proven to be beneficial for my sleep habits.
If your goal is to try lymphatic walking for weight loss, know that it could be a solid addition to any well-rounded routine when combined with a nutritious diet, calorie deficit, strength training and aerobic exercise. That said, lymphatic walking isn’t likely to result in significant weight loss on its own during a two-week time period.
“What I would not promise is dramatic scale weight loss in two weeks or permanent de-bloating, especially if everything else in your life stays the same,” Dr. Daniels explains.

Lymphatic Walking vs. Regular Walking: Is There a Real Difference? When comparing lymphatic walking vs. regular walking, there’s a major difference to consider. Lymphatic walking calls for you to put your phone away and be more mindful of each step you take, whereas when going on a typical walk, you may be focused on speed, burning calories, or a certain distance.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth Adding to Your Daily Routine? If you’re already a walker, trying lymphatic walking is a no-brainer. It’s an excellent addition for anyone’s daily routine—and the power of diaphragmatic breathing walking for your nervous system cannot be beat. If you’re not already a walker, you may want to try it as the perfect complement to your already-established workout routine. According to Dr. Daniels, you really only need to walk for 20 minutes a day, five to seven times per week, for it to be beneficial.
Since I don’t mind slowing down my pace to give my lymphatic system a boost, I plan to continue lymphatic walking. If, however, I was walking to burn calories or achieve a certain step/distance goal, lymphatic walking might not be the best choice.
