Lynn Anderson achieved major success in the ‘60s and ‘70s as both a country-pop artist and TV personality. Hailing from North Dakota as the daughter of country singer-songwriter Liz Anderson and beloved music industry figure Clarence Selmer Anderson, she reached her pinnacle of success with her stunning cover of the Joe South-penned “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden.” 

Released on October 8, 1970, “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden” was a massive hit, making Anderson a groundbreaking figure who helped redefine opportunities for women in country music. A crossover success, Anderson’s version of the song not only soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, where it stayed for five-weeks, but it also peaked at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. 

Anderson’s female spin on “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden” also struck a chord with international listeners, reaching the top spot in several countries, such as Canada, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, and many others. 

Her rendition won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance in 1971, and led to her successfully becoming the first female country music artist to headline and sell out Madison Square Garden. Additionally, Anderson's version of the song has been ranked at No. 88 on Rolling Stone's list of '200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time.'

Surprisingly, before the song's monumental success, Anderson had to convince her husband, at the time, Glen Sutton, to record the tune, as he was also her producer. He didn’t believe the song’s message was a good fit for her. 

“I had objected to it because it was a man’s song, and I didn’t wanna do it, but she kept bringing it in with her – she loved it,” he recalled, according to Country Thang Daily. “But they had to rework the track by incorporating an uptempo arrangement that included a string section and mandolin to the first version, which was recorded with a “straight, boring beat.”

Luckily, Anderson ended up recording the track, which helped bring even more success to her album of the same name, Rose Garden, which spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The collection earned her the distinction of having the longest-running No. 1 album by a female country artist, a record she held for 25 years until Shania Twain’sThe Woman in Me surpassed it.

Don’t expect to see Sean Penn on a red carpet anytime soon.

The actor recently spoke to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins at the Tribeca Festival in New York. He opened up about why he was absent from the Academy Awards in March.

Large gatherings, such as award shows, are “just anxiety- and dread-inducing,” Penn revealed.

“It’s not just [that it’s] an awards show,” he said about his nonattendance at the Oscars. “It would be the same if this group was going to an afterparty and one stepped into that. That always represented social discomfort for me; too many people. I’m now down, committed for life, that I won’t go anywhere to be in a designated group beyond eight people.”

He explained that an eight-person group is perfect because "If you cut out two hours for your night, it gives you 15 minutes per person.”

The Fast Times at Ridgemont High star isn’t keen on spending time in crowds, especially when fans request selfies.

“People should not do selfies ever with anyone. It’s bad for you; it’s bad for everyone. It’s a soul-sucker,” he said. “It’s the Holocaust grandmother and her 6-year-old paraplegic wheeling over? It’s a hard no.”

Penn was nominated and won in the Best Supporting Actor category for One Battle After Another. He spoke to his colleagues before the Oscars, sharing that it would be “better for my mental health” to avoid the ceremony.

The 65-year-old holds two previous Academy Awards for Mystic River (2003) and Milk (2008).

“The two times I had gone I felt relief that I’d won because so many people out there had worked really hard for that,” he said. “There’s the politics of that stuff.”

For his third win, Penn skipped the award show to fly to Ukraine to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. While abroad, he watched the broadcast, which started at 2 a.m. and finished at 5 a.m., during which he “really got to enjoy the Academy Awards for the first time,” Penn said. “It was great.”

When Urban Cowboy arrived in theaters on June 6, 1980, it wasn't just another movie release.

The film, starring John Travolta and Debra Winger, helped launch a full-fledged cultural phenomenon, bringing country music, cowboy hats and mechanical bull riding into the American mainstream.

Fresh off the success of Saturday Night Fever and Grease, Travolta, 72, traded disco for denim to play Bud Davis, a Texas oil worker whose turbulent romance unfolds inside the legendary honky-tonk known as Gilley's Club.

The Pasadena, Texas venue—owned by country singer Mickey Gilley—became almost as famous as the movie itself.

The film was a box-office success, grossing more than $53 million against a reported $10 million budget. More importantly, it helped fuel the Urban Cowboy craze of the early 1980s, inspiring Americans far removed from ranch life to embrace country music, western fashion and two-stepping.

Its soundtrack became nearly as influential as the movie. Featuring hits from artists including Gilley, Johnny Lee, Charlie Daniels and Anne Murray, the album helped bring country music to a broader audience.

Lee's "Lookin' for Love," in particular, became one of the era's defining crossover hits.

While critics were divided upon release, some recognized that Urban Cowboy was about more than boots and mechanical bulls.

A review in The Sydney Morning Herald described it as "an engaging romance" that explored "the emotional complexities of a rather nasty society," suggesting the film had more depth than its glossy marketing implied.

Moreover, Travolta was compared to one of the greatest actresses of all time—Marilyn Monroe.

"John Travolta may turn out to be the Marilyn Monroe of the 1980s if his career as an object of laughing and swooning lasts long enough to count."

Over the decades, the movie's legacy has only grown. Fans continue to praise its soundtrack and its vivid snapshot of a unique moment in American culture, while newer audiences have discovered it as a time capsule of the early 1980s.

Rising soul and jazz singer KELS sparked widespread debate online after performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Game 2 of the 2026 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Frost Bank Center on Friday night.

The NBA shared a video of her national anthem performance on X shortly before tipoff, and reactions quickly poured in from basketball fans and viewers across social media. 

While some praised the singer's distinctive vocal approach, others compared the performance to one of the most talked-about anthem renditions in NBA history.

KELS, born Kelsey Hillock, had announced the milestone appearance on Instagram before taking the court. The performance immediately became a trending topic as fans weighed in with sharply different opinions.

“Never heard of her before tonight! She did an amazing job!! I am now a fan!!” one viewer posted.

Another fan disagreed, writing, “Maybe one of the worst national anthem performances I ever seen.”

Others defended KELS' artistic style.

“People said this was worse than Fergie? I thought it was a nice performance. Maybe I just have a bigger heart than all you haters.”

One commenter focused on the singer’s presentation, saying, “This is some…..strange styling…..”

Another viewer interpreted the performance as a deliberate creative choice.

“She was all over the place, but I think that was the point, for it to be totally original. Very interesting imo.”

A separate reaction added, “Bad… but not as awkward as Fergie 😂.”

Several fans referenced Grammy-winning singer Fergie’s widely criticized national anthem performance at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.

The comparisons stem from the lasting memory of Fergie’s unconventional performance during the 2018 NBA All-Star Game. At the time, Fergie later addressed the backlash in a public statement.

“I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA,” Fergie said. “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.”

Who Is 2026 NBA Finals Game 2 National Anthem Singer?

Although many NBA viewers were unfamiliar with KELS before Game 2, the singer has steadily expanded her audience through independent touring and live performances.

Born in Germany to a military family and raised in Pittsburgh, KELS developed her musical skills from a young age. She began writing songs at 13 and trained as a jazz vocalist while performing in choirs, church groups and jazz ensembles.

Earlier this year, KELS performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, adding another major sports event to her résumé.

Whether praised for originality or criticized for its style, KELS’ Game 2 rendition became one of the most discussed moments leading into the latest chapter of the Knicks-Spurs championship series, introducing the rising singer to a much larger audience across the country.

John Fogertyis the songwriting mastermind and vocalist behind Creedence Clearwater Revival's biggest hits, but one of the group's most popular tracks has always made him "cringe."

The legendary musician has previously admitted that he wasn't always proud of the band's beloved song "Fortunate Son," but that didn't stop the track from becoming one of the biggest rock songs of all time.

Fogerty — who celebrated his 81st birthday last month — explained in a July 2025 interview with the Los Angeles Times that he finished recording the vocals for "Fortunate Son" after he had already been in the studio for a while recording another CCR classic, "Down on the Corner."

"So I’d been singing at the top of my lungs for probably an hour and a half, then I had to go back and finish 'Fortunate Son.' I was screaming my heart out, doing the best I could, but later I felt that some of the notes were a little flat — that I hadn’t quite hit the mark," he admitted. "I always sort of cringed about that."

Fogerty, however, isn't blind to the fact that fans have always loved "Fortunate Son," despite his own personal qualms with the track's vocals. He even acknowledged in the same interview that the gritty sound to his voice on the song may have been exactly what listeners love about it.

"I know that in the case of the Beatles, John [Lennon] would just sit in the studio screaming and screaming until his voice got raw enough, then he’d record some takes," Fogerty said. "Perhaps the fact that it was a little out of tune made it — what’s the word? — more pop-worthy. I don’t know."

Whether it's Fogerty's iconic vocals or the song's instantly recognizable guitar riffs, "Fortunate Son" has undoubtedly earned a spot among some of the greatest rock songs in music history.

Summer weekends at the Jersey Shore usually follow a familiar pattern: long afternoons in the sun followed by late nights that somehow start all over again the next morning.

Now, one Atlantic City resort is leaning all the way into that lifestyle.

Ocean Casino Resort recently teamed up with beauty brand MakeUp Eraser to launch a new "After Sun, Before Fun" package, a summer experience designed specifically for guests trying to transition from poolside relaxation to nightlife mode without looking completely exhausted by dinner time.

The package, available from June 5 through Sept. 4, centers around what’s essentially a reset button between daylife and nightlife.

Guests booking the experience receive a one-night stay in an oceanview room, along with a curated MakeUp Eraser kit featuring products meant to help undo the effects of a long day in the sun.

That includes the company’s new Sunscreen Eraser, hydrogel eye masks and several skincare-focused cleansing products designed for quick refreshes before heading back out for the evening.

But the real centerpiece may be the in-room IV treatment.

The package includes a "Royal Flush Radiance" IV drip from ShoreShotIV, marketed as a hydration and glow-boosting treatment intended to reduce fatigue and help guests recover after hours spent at the pool or beach.

It’s aimed directly at the crowd trying to rally for a second round of fun after a hot summer afternoon.

There’s also a $30 food-and-beverage credit for juices, smoothies or in-room snacks, plus a 50-minute spa treatment at Exhale Spa. Guests can choose either a massage or facial before getting ready for a night at HQ2 Nightclub, Ocean’s popular nightlife destination.

The package starts at $745 per night, making it more of a luxury splurge than a casual beach weekend.

Ocean Casino Resort is also tying the partnership into World Ocean Day celebrations on June 8. The first 500 visitors to the resort’s lobby level that day will receive a complimentary Original MakeUp Eraser PRO Classic product while supplies last.

Beck, Bogert and Appice, the rock power trio formed by members of highly influential bands, was named among the list of greatest supergroups in rock history.

Known for their high-energy stage presence, heavy instrumentation and seamless mix of rock and blues, they quickly captured the public’s attention.

In a top 20 ranking released by WatchMojo, the hard rock group secured the top 17 place despite their short-lived music career.

Formed in late 1972, the lineup was composed of the late guitarist Jeff Beck from The Yardbirds, who served as the frontman together with Vanilla Fudge and Cactus members Tim Bogert on bass and Carmine Appice on drums.

Capitalizing on their individual star power, the trio released their self-titled album, which includes their signature track, “Superstition,” a heavy rock rendition of Stevie Wonder’s hit.

“Stevie wrote Superstition specifically for a trio,” Beck mentioned in an interview as cited by Louder. “That song was custom-made for me as part of a three-piece. Our version was seriously metal for the time, though Stevie hated it with such a vengeance that you could almost taste it.”

However, Wonder’s plan did not push through after Motown Records’ Berry Gordy insisted that the music icon keep the song.

He believed that “Superstition” suited him best and would become a massive hit, which ultimately proved true.

Despite the single’s popularity at the time, the band’s version of “Superstition” failed to enter the chart; however, their album climbed the global chart, peaking at No. 12 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 28 on the UK Official Albums Chart.

Their debut album’s success was driven by the popularity of their other standout tracks such as “Lady,” “Black Cat Moan” and “Going Down,” which helped solidify Beck, Bogert & Appice’s impact despite their brief run.

“When the album came out we started to tour and the band turned into factions,” Bogert shared. “It wasn’t the fun I hoped it was going to be. The thrill of it all had been so wonderful in the beginning but then there were personality conflicts and things went downhill quickly.”

Among the fan favorites was the heavy blues rock song “Lady,” which was co-written by the trio together with Pete French from the band Cactus and Atomic Rooster and singer and keyboardist Duane Hitchings.

Unfortunately, despite the band’s success in their first album, Beck, Bogert & Appice parted ways even before the release of their second album.

In 1974, the band officially disbanded due to several factors, including creative differences within the trio as well as the lack of dedicated songwriting direction and the backstage altercation during the 1974 concert at the Rainbow Theatre in London.

In 1962, Peter Yarrow adapted "Puff, the Magic Dragon" as a sweet, innocent children's song. But according to the U.S. government, it was actually disguised drug propaganda.

The song was originally a poem written by Leonard Lipton in 1959, inspired by Ogden Nash's "The Tale of Custard the Dragon." Yarrow turned it into a folk song three years later, and in January 1963, the trio Peter, Paul and Mary released it on their sophomore album, Moving. 

“We put it on the album, without any thought that it might ever become popular in any important way,” Yarrow told Songfacts. “Yet, it happened spontaneously at some point, because a DJ somewhere in the Northwest started to play it on the radio, and it just took off, and it’s the song that it now is.”

It became one of the group's biggest hits, peaking at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

The lyrics follow a dragon named Puff and his young companion Jackie Paper through a series of adventures — until Jackie grows up and moves on. It's a sweet story about the end of childhood, but that's not how everyone read it.

According to the “evidence,” Jackie's last name "Paper," is a reference to rolling papers. The lyric "by the sea" was read as "by the C" for cannabis. The song is full of imagery involving mist and smoke, and the dragon's name, "draggin,” was interpreted as taking a drag from a joint.

While it may sound far-fetched, it was more than enough to convince some. 

By 1984, the New York Times was publishing letters to the editor calling it a song “about drug use.” Radio stations pulled it from rotation, and at least one church minister was reportedly banned from using it at events. 

The public wasn't the only one that had a problem with it. In 1970, Vice President Spiro Agnew launched a crusade against rock music, describing it as "blatant drug culture propaganda" and pushing to have certain songs banned. "Puff, the Magic Dragon" ended up on the list.

Both writers spent years insisting the song was being completely misunderstood. 

"It is not, and it never was [about drugs]," Yarrow told Florida Today in 2017. "It is an imbecilic reality that we just have to live with now. It won't stop me from singing it and asking children to come and join me on stage and sing along with it either. It's lovable enough to last, and I won't let that die."

Yarrow had made the same argument a decade earlier, telling Reuters that drug culture didn't exist yet when the song was written. 

“I was 20 years old at Cornell in 1959 when it was written and I was so square at that time, as was everyone else. Puff was a good dragon and would never have had drugs around him."

Lipton, meanwhile, eventually made peace with the fact that some people will never be convinced. "People want to think it's about pot, that's fine with me," he said.

None of it hurt the song's reputation in the long run. "Puff, the Magic Dragon" went on to become a generational anthem, inspiring an animated TV special in 1978, two sequels and a book adaptation. Even Elon Musk is a fan — he named one of his SpaceX capsules after it.
