Rock Legend Arrested For Public Urination at Alamo 44 Years Ago Today

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 1:58pm

Forty-four years ago today, one of rock’s most notorious stories unfolded in San Antonio, Texas.

On February 19, 1982, Ozzy Osbourne was arrested for urinating on the lawn of the Alamo Cenotaph—a monument honoring those who died in the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. The Black Sabbath frontman had performed earlier that evening at the San Antonio Convention Center Arena when, according to reports, he relieved himself at the historic landmark.

At the time of the incident, Osbourne was reportedly intoxicated and, in typical Ozzy fashion, wearing one of his future wife Sharon Osbourne’s dresses because she hid all his clothes to prevent him from going out.

Though the event has often been sensationalized as taking place directly on the Alamo itself, accounts clarified that Osbourne urinated on the Cenotaph monument across the street, not the historic mission building. Still, the act sparked outrage in Texas, where the site is considered sacred ground.

Osbourne was arrested and charged with public intoxication, briefly jailed, and later banned from performing in San Antonio for a decade.

Years later, he publicly expressed regret over the incident. In 1992, he donated $10,000 to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the organization that helps maintain the Alamo, and the city lifted the ban. In 2015, Osbourne returned to the landmark for the first time in 33 years while filming a History Channel series with his son, Jack Osbourne.

“We all have done things in our lives that we regret,” he said at the time.

Dubbed the “Prince of Darkness,” Osbourne had already cemented his legacy in the 1970s as the lead singer of Black Sabbath before launching a massively successful solo career in the 1980s. He would go on to sell more than 100 million albums worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both with Black Sabbath and as a solo artist.

Osbourne performed his final concert on July 5, 2025, in Birmingham, England. He died just 17 days later, on July 22, 2025.

But on this day in 1982, the rock icon’s legend grew in a very different way—in one of music history’s most infamous moments.

'House of the Dragon' Season 3 Trailer Is Here, and War Has Erupted

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 1:53pm

Capitalising on the immense popularity of its second Game of Thronesoffshoot, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO has now unveiled the first teaser trailer for House of the DragonSeason 3. As if that wasn't juicy enough, there's also a release month to circle on the calendar.

Over the course of 80 epic seconds, the footage returns fans to the fire-blasted feudal landscape of Westeros, populated by childhood friends-turned-enemies Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen, their battle-hardened followers Ser Criston Cole and Daemon Targaryen, wantaway kings, and scaly monsters of the skies. War is imminent, with the first two seasons of House of the Dragon building up to this legendary fracas to be later dubbed "The Dance of the Dragons."

"A new dawn is coming, a new line of unsullied kings," it's teased through voiceover. Enter James Norton's pivotal newcomer Ormund Hightower, standing at the frontlines of battle in full armour. He happens to be the cousin of Alicent, so there's plenty expected from Ormund as the season unravels.

Once the trailer's ash-stained faces, shadowy whispers, and flame-grilled action fades out, it's confirmed that June 2026 will mark the fantasy show's official premiere. Since it's traditionally a Sunday event, that means fans can look forward to the first episode of Season 3 on either the 7th, 14th, 21st, or 28th of the month.

As for who's back on screen this time around, House of the Dragon stars Olivia Cooke,Emma D'Arcy, Matt Smith, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, and Abubakar Salim.

Norton, who TV watchers will recognise from Happy Valley and House of Guinness, is one of three new cast members. The others are Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy) as Lord Roderick Dustin, and Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts) as Ser Torrhen Manderly.

House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres this June.

3 Zodiac Signs With a Rare Mix of Genius and Intuition

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 1:32pm

Some people are gifted with incredible intelligence, and others have profound intuitive or psychic abilities. But what happens when a person has both? These star signs blend discernment and intuition, leading to wise instincts, spiritual insights, witty problem-solving, and powerful auras.

Intellect and intuition are often seen as polar opposites. One relies on careful strategy and observation, while another comes from sudden emotional clarity. However, the wisest have a balance of intuition and intellect, knowing that they both go hand in hand. Even Albert Einstein believed that, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution." Read on to discover the zodiac signs with a rare combination of genius and intuition, according to expert astrologers.

Virgo

Virgo is known for its planetary rulership over Mercury, the planet of cerebral matters. Unsurprisingly, they have exceptional memory, processing, and data-analyzing skills. With their sharp intellect, they can solve any dilemma, even if, at times, they are prone to overthinking or being overly critical of themselves.

Their intuition is also an essential facet of their personality, though. While they often credit their insights to pure logic, there's more to it than meets the eye. Beneath the surface, this grounded personality can also know things without rhyme or reason.

Associated with claircognizance, or the spiritual gift to download information from divine sources, they can psychically resolve situations. They often overlook their abilities, accrediting them to their learned skills, and do not understand a more spiritual aspect is at play. If they pay close attention, they'll take notice more often.

Scorpio

This Water sign is capable of powerful insights. With strong perception skills, they read beyond the surface of what others present. This makes them good judges of character. Motivated by a deep desire to attain emotional control and to remain the most informed, they tend to develop powerful psychic abilities coupled with strong pattern recognition and discernment.

If you think you can trick a Scorpio, good luck. They tend to be ten steps ahead, investigating the nitty-gritty details and taboos others are too scared to look at. Taboos and dark sides don't scare them. They have a hard time trusting unless one makes their vulnerabilities apparent. This zodiac sign will go to the ends of the earth to solve mysteries, big or small, so know their rare mix of genius intuition isn't something to undermine.

Aquarius

Aquarius is a trendsetter, using their foresight to predict what humanity craves to see next. Their strong intellectual reasoning is evident in all they do. However, beneath the surface, they also manifest with their intuition. They may write off their predictive powers and abilities as mere lucky guesses, but they are also spiritually gifted.

Marked as the sign corresponding with innovation, Aquarius isn't here to follow the status quo. You've probably heard that we're entering the Age of Aquarius. This boils down to interpreting that humanity is eager to question authority, rewrite the script, and shift social norms. Quirkiness is no longer merely tolerated but sought after. During this era of profound evolution, Aquarius leads the masses with its strengths.

How Travis Kelce Is Connected to the U.S. Women's Hockey Olympic Team

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 1:32pm

The U.S.A Olympic women's team is making history in 2026 with Laila Edwards becoming the first Black player to represent her country at the event. The 22-year-old defender from Ohio is connected to Travis Kelce, who is from the same hometown.

The families of players have to financially fund their way to the Olympic Games. Her father, Robert Edwards, created a GoFundMe with the goal of $50,000 for travel and not having to sacrifice their other financial responsibilities. Travis, 36, and Jason Kelce anonymously donated $10,000, helping them exceed their goal with $61,000, according to Edwards.

That meant 14 members of her immediate family can watch her play, according to The Associated Press. "Obviously, my name’s on the roster, but I feel like my whole family made it to the Olympics," she told the outlet. "All the sacrifices they’ve made, the things they’ve done to get me here, my parents, my siblings, I’m so grateful,. And for them to get to come and share the experience is going to be really special."

One of those family members is her 91-year-old grandmother, Ernestine Gray. Edwards is also the second Black player on any women or men's Olympic hockey team. Jarome Iginla was the first Black player win Olympic gold in 2022 on Team Canada. Edwards directly follows in the footsteps of Jordan Greenway, who was the first Black player for Team U.S.A at the Olympics, according to NHL PA.

Edwards appeared on Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce. "I'm the best athlete to come out of Cleveland Heights," the hockey player said. "No objection," Jason, 38, said off-screen. The brothers talked about her rise in the sport years ago when she made it to the senior hockey team.

"Everyone knows them as really good athletes, and I think only a handful of people get to know how good they are as people, and I think it's really cool," Edwards said. "And I can't thank them enough." The Kelce family met her family in Milan.

Trader Joe's Savory $5 Easy Dinner Is So Flavorful, It'll Become a Staple in Your Weekly Rotation

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 1:30pm

With the way the cold winter weather is lingering around, in my head, it's soup season until I can finally shed my puffy jacket, step outside and feel the actual warmth of the sun. Until then, Trader Joe's has faithfully filled the void in my heart left by spring, summer and fall, with delicious, unavoidable soup offerings.

My current favorite, you ask? A savory $5 Lemony Chicken Orzo Soup that I spent weeks noticing on the shelves before finally bringing a container home to try it for myself. And while I'm a dedicated soup fan all year-round, this hearty, flavorful concoction has quickly earned a top spot in my mealtime rotation, leaving me no choice but to stock up before it inevitably disappears.

Lemony Chicken Orzo Soup, $4.99 at Trader Joe's

Nathan Hutsenpiller

Sold in a convenient, reheatable 20-ounce plastic container for just $4.99, Trader Joe's Lemony Chicken Orzo Soup takes traditional chicken soup to an elevated place, complete with a base of savory chicken broth and hearty chunks of white chicken meat. That classic foundation is then built upon with a mirepoix mix of celery, carrot and onions for extra depth and sweetness.

From there, a gluten-free orzo pasta made from a blend of quinoa and rice flours provides heartiness and body, all complemented by bright lemon juice and a blend of herbs to bring out a light zestiness in the broth. On the surface, this soup looks just as you’d expect from reading its description, but once cooked and spooned into your mouth, a world of flavors proves it’s a premium concoction worthy of the praise it deserves.

Comfort in a Bowl, Ready in Minutes

Nathan Hutsenpiller

The best part about store-bought soups like this one is how quickly they can be heated and enjoyed. Sure, whipping up a savory soup from scratch is a satisfying and rewarding way to curb your hunger, but sometimes it's just nice to have all the hard work done for you. And with an affordable $5 price tag attached, grabbing a 20-ounce container of your favorite soup feels like a no-brainer.

Adding to the convenience, whether you heat it in the microwave or on the stovetop, this soup only takes a few minutes to reach the perfect serving temperature, ready to enjoy with your favorite toppings or sides. That said, this soup already tastes fantastic as is, but small additions like a drizzle of chili crunch oil or a sprinkle of extra herbs and spices can easily transform it and make it your own.

Serving Suggestions to Complement Its Flavor

Nathan Hutsenpiller

Aside from easy upgrades like chili oil, herbs and spices, the culinary possibilities are plentiful with a little imagination. Trader Joe's suggests serving it with rustic breads like ciabatta rolls or their popular Olive Fougasse, which complements the soup's zesty, savory flavors with its Kalamata and black olives.

Of course, other breads work just as well, like a good country loaf, sourdough or even a warm baguette for dipping straight into the flavorful broth. You can even take the Mediterranean vibes further and pair it with a classic Greek salad or a simple side of roasted vegetables for a more complete, balanced meal.

Keep your eyes peeled on your next Trader Joe's run and snatch this soup up if it's still in stock near you. While you're at it, check out Trader Joe's new blonde chocolate bar and strawberry mousse cakes for the perfect dessert to complement your savory meal.

The Top Chef winner took to Instagram on Thursday, February 19 to celebrate a major milestone: she and Nick's sonHudson’s 18th birthday

In a Reel shared with followers, Williamson compiled footage of family and friends celebrating Hudson’s milestone birthday, along with a rare snapshot of the three of them posing together at what appeared to be a restaurant celebration.

“I have no words… except… Happy 18th birthday my sweet boy,” she captioned the video. “You have been my greatest joy in life. You inspire me, drive me to be a better human, parent, and role model. You impress me every single day with your kindness, empathy, and wit. The past 18 years have been the most rewarding of my life because of you. Williamson shares Hudson with Nick, and their divorce was finalized in 2024. United Is Resuming Its Summer Service to the World’s Northernmost Capital

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 1:28pm

In a nod to adventurous summer travel and expanding global connectivity, United Airlines is resuming its seasonal service between Newark, New Jersey, and Nuuk, Greenland—the northernmost capital city in the world. This remarkable route, first launched in summer 2025, was the first regularly scheduled nonstop flight between the continental United States and Greenland in more than a decade, opening a direct gateway to one of the planet's most remote and dramatic landscapes.

"We are excited to announce our first-ever nonstop service between Greenland and the U.S.," Marcel Fuchs, Managing Director of International Sales for United Airlines, said in a 2024 press release. "U.S. travellers will now be able to fly nonstop in just over four hours to the northernmost capital in the world, providing a gateway to world-class hiking and fascinating wildlife under the summer’s midnight sun."

Jens R. Lauridsen, CEO of Greenland Airports, added that Nuuk was looking forward to welcoming "visitors from all across North America" who would be "able to enjoy Greenland's incredible natural wonders, rich culture and history, and exciting adventures."

"We are excited about more people experiencing Greenland through our partnership with United Airlines," Lauridsen continued in the 2024 press release.

United's twice-weekly service typically operates on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. It links Newark Liberty International Airport to Nuuk Airport (GOH) during the peak summer months, beginning June 6, 2026.

The roughly four-hour flight crosses the North Atlantic and gives travelers a rare chance to experience the Arctic's midnight sun, rugged fjords, and deep cultural traditions. Nuuk, Greenland's capital and largest city, stands on the shores of a beautiful fjord ringed by stark mountain peaks and icy waters.

In summer, the long daylight hours reveal hiking trails, whale-watching opportunities, and culturally rich museums that showcase Greenland's Inuit heritage. For many American travelers, this direct summer connection significantly lowers the barriers to exploring a destination that historically required circuitous routing through Denmark or Iceland.

The resumption of this route in 2026 follows some operational challenges at Nuuk Airport in 2025, when international flights were temporarily suspended due to security screening issues—a situation that was quickly resolved to restore service. United's continued commitment to the route highlights both the growing demand for off-the-beaten-path travel experiences and Greenland's investment in aviation infrastructure, including a newly expanded runway that can accommodate larger international flights.

By restoring this service, United not only strengthens its transatlantic network but also gives adventurous travelers one of the most compelling entry points into the Arctic.

The Opry also revealed that the celebratory lineup would include country stars Lainey Wilson, Craig Morgan, Ernest and Leanne Morgan, along with "more for this unforgettable Opry welcome!"

Wilson, a friend, "Save Me" collaborator and Opry member herself, will induct him.

Tickets are available now, with "a portion of ticket purchases will be donated to the Judge Dinkins Educational Center, a cause very close to Jelly Roll’s heart."

In Dec. 2025, Jelly Roll burst into tears when he was invited, via a video message from Morgan, to join the Opry during an interview on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast.

The reactions to the Opry's news were mixed, with some calling it "the best news," as others noted it was a "disappointing choice."

"For those of you hating you might as well move on. Just because he’s not your favorite doesn’t mean you get to hate on him. Besides he’s made a living for himself and he’s doing what yall aren’t……. Spreading kindness and the gospel," one defended.

Others argued that Jelly Roll wasn't considered country, though plenty rebuttled that he's "the most deserving artist❤️‍🩹" and felt "so proud" of the choice.

Jelly Roll Made His Opry Debut in 2021

Jelly Roll's Grand Ole Opry debut was on Nov. 9, 2021, a moment he reflects on often, as he was freshly released from prison and in the audience watching Morgan perform "Almost Home," per Variety.

During an interview in 2023, he told the Opry he always "dreamed of playing here, but it seemed far-fetched."

"I was only 15 minutes away, but it felt 50 million miles away. You know? Cause it was such a big stage and it's still intimidating. Even as I started to really dream it, as the more I got into music, I was like, ‘I wanna play it,’ it started to become a dream of mine. But initially, it was too big to dream of," he expressed.

When it finally happened, he noted that he "cried like a baby in front of 12 strangers.

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 1:05pm

Actress Sarah Chalke is opening up about her experience joining the cast of the hit sitcomRoseanne, which originally had a nine-season run until 1997.

During a February 2026 appearance on actorJesse Tyler Ferguson's podcast, Dinner's On Me, Chalke shared she was 16 years old when she was chosen to play Becky Conners after the character's original actress, Lecy Goranson, left the show following season 5. She recalled being interviewed by a professional publication regarding her role on Roseanne for the first time when she was 17 years old. She said that following the interview, she was tasked to model for a photoshoot.

"I sat down and did the interview and I was in grade 12 at this point. And I talked about what I love to do and hanging out with my friends and hiking and all these things, outdoors. And then they did the photo shoot. And I didn't understand that the photoshoot is like a fashion photoshoot and it has nothing to do with the interview," said Chalke during the podcast episode.

She suggested that she felt uncomfortable about the clothes she was requested to wear for said photoshoot.

"The clothes were just getting smaller and smaller until I was in like hot pants, platform heels, a tiny little situation, like so much makeup. And then they're handing me a cat. And I'm holding this kitten and now they're like, 'Now pout,'" said Chalke during the interview. "And I'm literally like sitting there like holding the kitten, pouting, wearing very little, tear comes down my cheek. The photographer's like, 'Are you okay?'"

Chalke recalled telling the photographer that she wasn't alright because she felt as though her friends from high school would have judged her for the photoshoot.

"All I could visualize was my friends in Canada going like, 'What are you doing?'" said Chalke while speaking to Ferguson.

Chalke also said that she was the only Roseanne star who would do press for the sitcom while she was on the cast. According to Chalke, most of her Roseanne castmates were "super private" and "kept their private lives private."

Hilary Duff’s Son, Luca, Is All Grown Up, Looks Exactly Like His Mom

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 1:01pm

On the precipice of a major year, Hilary Duff is focused on what matters most in her world: family.

Yesterday, the mom of four took to her Instagram Stories to share a picture of her 13-year-old son, Luca.

In the pic, Luca stares straight into the camera from the front seat of a car, his messy coif echoing signature ’dos of kids his age. His freckles are on full display, as is the resemblance to his millennial icon mom.

Over the image, Duff added the word, “Gah.” Perhaps she’s reflecting on how fast kids grow and how speedy time moves, because Luca turns 14 next month. 🥹

When Luca entered teenhood last March, Duff shared an emotional post on Instagram, writing, “Wow- is time ever a thief. I thought ten years of being a mom felt wild…yet here I am at my son’s 13th birthday. … My only son. I love you more than the moon and as far as all the stars in the sky.”

Putting the “toxic” mom group drama involving Ashley Tisdale in her rearview, Duff graces the current cover of Glamour. Inside the mag, she gets candid about her new album, upcoming world tour, and parenthood. Duff shares three girls with husband Matthew Koma – Banks, 7, Mae, 4, Townes, 1 – and she shares Luca with ex-husband Mike Comrie.

Speaking to how she juggles reinventing herself on the main stage and mom guilt, she told the magazine, “Your brain has to flip a switch and be like, ‘I’m choosing this for me. I have to do this. My kids are going to be fine.’”

She went on to share that Luca has given her the validation that makes everything worthwhile, saying, “He came up to me after my L.A. show, and he was like, ‘I’m really proud of you,’” she shared.

As for her husband, he’s also her biggest fan.

“What a rad example to be able to set for our kids,” Koma told Glamour of his wife. “That you could be there for them in the capacity that she is — of all the things that she is, it’s a mother that she’s best at, and a partner and a family member. So I think it’s really special to see that come to life. She can do that, and she can also follow these passions in a very real and successful way.”

Now, if only we could finally get that Lizzy McGuire reboot.

1987 Hit Album Ranked 'Best Classic Rock Comeback' of All Time

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 1:00pm

It's not uncommon for rock bands to go through lineup changes, tensions among members, and hiatuses. The 1987 album Permanent Vacation has been ranked as the top comeback album of all time after Aerosmith's original band lineup reunited to shift gears in their music.

Fans would know that Permanent Vacation wasn't Aerosmith's first comeback, seeing as they released the album Done With Mirrors two years prior in 1985. While the album was created to be their return as a band, it didn't reach the level of success that was intended, even withJoe Perry and Brad Whitford's return on guitars.

The two band members had left in 1979 and 1981 due to internal conflicts and drug addiction. Aerosmith's next album after their departure, Rock in a Hard Place, didn't do well against previous records.

For many, the 1987 album marked the band's official comeback thanks to some changes that led it to be a hit across the charts. The album led to Aerosmith changing their sound to pop-metal that would be prevalent in their music until the early 90s. It was also the first time the songs were strictly created by the band members, with Aerosmith employing outside songwriters.

The idea came at the suggestion of executive John Kalodner, with Perry agreeing that opening the doors to other songwriters helped them creatively and understand other people's ways of making music.

"I think that was a big influence because you learn so much when you’re writing with other people,” he told Ultimate Classic Rock in 2017. "You learn more about the craft, so to speak… There are a million different ways to write songs, what the drive is – that kind of thing. That opened, creatively, a lot of doors."

Permanent Vacation was met with a moderate response among critics, but became Aerosmith's biggest success at the time it was released and sold five million copies among U.S. fans. Songs like "Rag Doll", "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)", and "Angel" became chart hits.

American Songwriter also named Bruce Springsteen's The Rising and John Fogerty's Centerfield as also being the best comeback albums. The Rising marked Springsteen's first album in seven years since his longest career break after releasing The Ghost of Tom Joad, as well as his reunion with the E Street Band. Fogerty's Centerfield was his first solo rock album in nine years before its 1985 release, and topped Billboard charts.

Channing Tatum Shares Health Update After Surgery: 'Hang in There, Man'

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 12:52pm

Channing Tatumis feeling "stronger" – and he has a gnarly new scar to show off.

Tatum, 45, gave a health update on Feb. 19, two weeks after surgery for a separated shoulder. The Magic Mike star was a bit surprised by the procedure's aftermath. "Not [gonna] lie, it's my fault for not asking. I thought it was gonna be two little holes. Apparently not the case," he said with a laugh.

"Hang in there," commented actress Jamie Alexander, while giving her fellow superhero a fistbump (Alexander portrayed Lady Sifin the Thor movies, and Tatum finally fulfilled his dream of playing Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine).

Other well-wishers sent love to Tatum: many wished him a "speedy recovery, bro"; others said, "You got this, king!"; and filmmaker Cole Walliser noted that the scar made Channing look "even more badass lol."

The Roofman star seemed chill with his new look. "Well, it doesn't matter, anyhow," he wrote. "I like scars anyway, and it's feeling stronger, day by day, so thank you, Doc. Also, I do like going through airport security, wondering if my shoulder is gonna shut off the machine."

Tatum was referring to how doctors had to literally screw him back together. On Feb. 4, he posted a black-and-white photo of himself in a hospital gown. "Just another day. Another challenge. This one is gonna be hard. But whatever. Let's get it in," he captioned the shot.

On his Instagram Story, Tatum went into further detail. He first shared a photo of an X-ray, noting that he had a "separated shoulder." A second post was after the operation, revealing a medical screw holding the broken bones together. "Screwed shoulder. Yay," he wrote.

Tatum didn't reveal how he injured his shoulder, but he tends to go full-out in a movie role. In September, Tatum revealed to Variety that he injured himself while filming Avengers: Doomsday. Tatum said they "had tons more shooting," including a "big fight" with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, but he was sidelined, with his stunt double doing most of the work.

Channing Tatum will reprise the role of Gambit for Avengers: Doomsday. He was supposed to play the master mutant thief in a standalone film, but production never got off the ground. Tatum, who dearly cherishes Gambit, got to finally portray him in Deadpool & Wolverine.

I'm not gonna go full Cajun," he said of his upcoming appearance. The film's directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, wanted him to be "funny" but not goofy. "They want to keep the drama and keep it tight," said Tatum. "When Gambit gets serious — when he drops the Mardi Gras mask — things do matter."

25 Years Later, Director Reveals 'Fast & Furious' Star Almost Got Heath Ledger's 'A Knight's Tale' Role

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 12:46pm

As his beloved medieval comedy A Knight's Tale reaches its quarter-century anniversary, writer and director Brian Helgeland has been letting a few surprising cats out of the bag. Released by Sony Pictures, the 2001 movie followed the plight of charismatic peasant squire William Thatcher (played by the late Heath Ledger), who finds himself winning jousting tournaments and befriending historical figures.

But according to Helgeland, who also penned the screenplays for L.A Confidential and Mystic River, the studio wanted Ledger's central role to go to somebody else. He told The Guardian: "At the top of [the shortlist] was Paul Walker. I met him but he seemed too contemporary, like a guy who should be driving race cars – which he did so well in The Fast and the Furious. I just thought: 'You're not going to pull this off.'"

At the time, Walker's resumé boasted decent parts in Pleasantville and She's All That, yet Ledger's Hollywood ascension was like a freight train through town. Helgeland went on to recall: "I met him at a restaurant in LAX airport and he had this long leather case with him. 'What's in the case?' I asked. He said: 'It's my didgeridoo.' 'Can you play it?' I asked. He said: 'Of course I can.' And he started blowing on it like a white Australian Miles Davis. Everyone was looking. I fell in love with him in that moment and offered him the part."

Paul Bettany was the studio's first choice to play William (Getty Images)

Incredibly, Paul Bettany's ring announcer/poet Geoffrey Chaucer was supposed to bare the face of Hugh Grant, too, who'd pocketed the entire 1990s as his own thanks to major titles such as The Remains of the Day, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sense and Sensibility, Mickey Blue Eyes, and Notting Hill.

"I wrote the part of Chaucer for Paul Bettany, although Sony wanted Hugh Grant," noted the filmmaker. "I've got nothing against Hugh but I thought the tone would be skewed if it was him and three other guys."

Bettany himself spoke to the same publication, and revealed that Helgeland threatened to walk from the movie if the studio didn't agree to casting him. "Because they had Heath attached, who was the hottest thing going after 10 Things I Hate About You, they went: 'All right, we'll let Brian have Paul in this f****** movie.'" And the rest is history.

‘80s No. 1 Heartfelt Hit Ranked Best Country Song That ‘Defined the Decade’

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 12:45pm

In 1982, Willie Nelson recorded and released his stunning version of the touching track, “Always on My Mind.” By the time of his debut, the crossover hit was already a Top 10 success for Elvis Presley, who dropped his rendition a decade prior as a B-side to his “Separate Ways” single.

Written by Wayne Carson, Mark James, and Johnny Christopher, “Always on My Mind” has taken on different lives by various artists who recorded the timeless classic, ranging from Brenda Lee, who first recorded the track, to Gwen McCrae, who first released the song, to the Pet Shop Boys, who gave the song a harmonizing touch.

Major Award Wins and Chart Performance

But Nelson’s version of the tune, which appears on his CMA Award-winning LP of the same name, solidified his country music status even further. The album itself, according to American Songwriter, reached No. 1 three separate times within a single year, ultimately holding the top spot for a total of 22 weeks.

The international hit, which almost became a duet with Merle Haggard, also made history for the Red Headed Stranger, 92, spending two weeks atop the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and nabbing the No. 5 spot on Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in total.

“Always on My Mind” enjoyed history–making success at the 25th annual Grammy Awards, where it earned three gramophones for categories including Best Male Country Vocal Performance, Best Country Song, and Song of the Year. In addition to its Grammy trophies, the Nelsons’ take on the tune earned Song of the Year and Single of the Year at the CMA Awards in 1982.

An article byWomen’s World compiled a list of the top 10 heartfelt country songs that ‘defined the decade,’ ranking Nelson’s rendition of “Always on My Mind” at the No. 1 spot. The placement found him edging out songs like Dolly Parton’s country classic ‘9 To 5’ and Randy Travis’ 1988 smash ‘Forever and Ever Amen,’ which took the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively.

Other tracks that made the list include, Ronnie Milsap’s “Stranger in my House,” The Judds’ “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Ole Days),” Nelson’s “On the Road Again” and “City of New Orleans,” The Highwaymen’s “Highwaymen,” Kenny Rogers’ “You Decorated My Life,” and K.T. Oslin’s “Hold Me.”
