Majestic Bald Eagle Struts Around Like a Diva in Her Hilarious 'Fish-Flops'
Animals don't really have clothes (unless we give them some). They're content with their fur, feathers, and scales, and usually don't even really like it when we do put clothes on them. They live life the natural way.
Well, except for one Bald Eagle. She recently decided it was time to make some shoes, so she used what she had, creating a new trend. Fish-flops! I don't think I could rock these, but she really makes them work:
@christinescritters‘Tis the season for FISH-FLOPS! We love when Aurora dons her fish-flops to get her fish to where she would like to eat lunch! #aurora #christinescritters #lovemyjob #dayinthelife #fishflops
♬ original sound - Christine’s Critters Inc.Christine's Crittersl include this incredible Bald Eagle, Aurora. Apparently, Aurora has been trying to bring fish-flops into style for a long time. She dons them almost every time someone gives her a fish, unless they give it to her in her favorite lunch spot.
They love seeing her fish-flops, so something tells me they typically don't give it to her in her favorite spot. So, when they don't, she picks it up with her huge talons and walks on it until she gets there. Not only is it super fashionable and funny, but it's also smart.

Miss Fish-Flops is currently going through it. It's molting season, and as the resident fashionista, she wants to be in top shape at all times. Thus, she never slacks off with her personal hygiene:
@christinescrittersAurora takes her personal hygiene VERY seriously, eapecially during molting season. Molting can be itchy business and leads to scratching itches and shaking out those feathers with a good rouse ❤️ #christinescritters #eagle #aurora #lovemyjob #dayinthelife
♬ Jurassic Park Theme - The Hit CrewSome people are concerned about her talon straps, but they're for her own safety. This is a wildlife rescue, so these birds (and other critters) can't live in the wild. If Aurora was to take flight and leave, things wouldn't end well for her.
How Eagles Protect Their FoodAurora's fish-flops are the best way to transport her food, and they're the best way to keep it safe. She's doing the best she can!
gjohnstonphoto / Getty Images
If an Eagle is going to move their food to eat it, whether they're eating it themselves or sharing it with their young, they're going to use their feet. It's much more efficient than using their beaks, because it:
- Offers security: they can pierce it with their talons to keep it steady.
- Helps defense: no smaller bird is going to try to wrestle a fish from those talons.
- Allows them to carry larger prey than with just their beaks.
Christine and everyone at her wildlife rescue love to see Aurora's awesome fish-flops, but one thing is important to remember: you can look, but you should never touch!

This Clever Cat Invented a Special 'Secret Language' Just to Communicate With His Blind Sister
The stereotype that cats are antisocial is exactly that, a stereotype. Cats can be incredibly affectionate, especially with each other.
Analia Serebrenik, who goes by @analia383 on TikTok, is a mom to two adorable cats, Fil andDoja. Doja does not have eyes, rendering her fully blind. But her brother, Fil, has created an entire feline language just to communicate with her and let her know where he is and what he's up to. Analia shared their special interactions on her social media.
@analia383 ♬ original sound - Analia SerebrenikThe little sounds Fil makes for Doja are distinct and not at all like a typical meow from your average cat. They're clearly specifically for her. Analia hypothesized in the video that they're his way of letting his sister know he's making sure he's watching over her.
Commenters on the post were quick to point out the uniqueness of the situation and Fil's communication style:
"That's almost identical to the sound that mama kitties make to call their kittens."
"I just saw a post that cats don't typically vocalize to each other, only to humans, so this is extra special."
"I hear 'I love you' in there...what a darling boy."
What Cat Vocalizations MeanEven without a blind cat sibling, cats have a plethora of different vocalizations that you can hear from them. The standard ones we're all familiar with; purring means a cat is content, whereas hissing means they're aggravated and warning you. But there are more in the mix, as well. Chirping can indicate excitement, trilling is a kind of a greeting, and the typical meow is the most common way cats communicate with humans. Yowling or howling is a sign of distress, something more high-pitched and sharp can mean they're surprised, and if your cat growls they're certainly telling you to "back off."
Most pet owners become incredibly tuned in to the different ways their animals communicate. It's pretty remarkable when you can learn the language that your pets have with each on top of the language that they use with you.

Cockatoo Reunites With Dad After 5 Days—Then Has the Sweetest Reaction
As pet parents, we don't get to decide how our fur children feel when we leave them, even if it's just for a short time. Some might act cold to let us know they're not happy we went away, but others throw a full-on celebration in our honor.
Charlie, the Cockatoo, may have wondered why his favorite human, Dad, was gone for five days, leaving him to the devices of the spare human (aka Mom). The moment this Parrot realizes Dad's home, he does the cutest thing!

♬ original sound - Charlie Junior The Cockatoo How Long Cockatoos Remember People They LoveAs one of the smartest bird species on the planet, Cockatoos are capable of remembering people they love for many years. Some studies suggest they may even remember their people throughout the span of their whole lives, which can be multiple decades (50 to 60 years or more) when living domestically.
This has to do with the strong bonds these social, extremely intelligent birds form with their human "flock," making it easy-peasy to remember our faces, routines, and voices. Some Parrots might hold a grudge and show it when reunited with a parent, but others are just thrilled to see them again.
You can tell from Charlie's immediate excitement the moment he spotted Dad, that he was well aware of who he is and how happy it makes him to be reunited. Now, they can finally get back to business with their epic nightly song and dance time!

Rare Albino Squirrel Delights Onlookers While Scaling a Tree in London
No matter where you live, there's a good chance you're going to see at least some evidence of wildlife when you go outside. From pigeons to squirrels to insects, whoever you spot is a reminder that you're actually spending time in their outdoor home, not yours (though plenty of animals are happy to share their corner of nature).
Every once in a while, you might even spot a rare creature, like the albino squirrel in the video below. This little guy looks like a Pokémon character or the star of an animated Disney movie, but they are very real!
@abcnewsA man couldn’t believe his luck after he spotted an “albino” squirrel scaling a tree in London, England. Albinism occurs in one in 100,000 squirrels, according to a University of Texas biologist. #animals #squirrels #london
♬ original sound - ABC News - ABC NewsOn Wednesday, May 20, ABC News shared this clip of a man who discovered an albino squirrel scampering up a tree while he was outdoors in London. Not exactly where you'd expect a sighting like this to take place, but it really did happen!
Since the squirrel lives in a big city, it's not surprising to see that they weren't really bothered by a human noticing them, allowing us to get a really good look at their beautiful white fur (and precious face).
See all that delight on this man's face? That's exactly how I would feel if I got to see one of these squirrels up close and personal. How cool!
Related: This Sweet Squirrel Treats a Tiny Calico Critter Toy Like Her Baby
How Rare Are Albino Squirrels?True albino squirrels are pretty rare, so this man was right to be in awe when he spotted one in the wild. Many experts agree that the chances that an albino squirrel will be born to a gray squirrel is about 1 in 100,000, so that explains why they're so uncommon.
Location also matters when it comes to the likelihood of spotting these beautiful creatures. One website dedicated to the wildlife of the Smoky Mountains points out that certain areas are home to albino squirrel colonies. They seem to flock to urban areas out of safety, since there are less predators who can reach them in the middle of a big city!
Also, don't forget that white squirrels are actually a thing, so not every white squirrel you spot will have albinism.
How to Tell If a Squirrel Is AlbinoA true albino squirrel will have pink eyes (like the one in the video), while a white squirrel will have dark-colored eyes. These squirrels are called leucystic squirrels, which have less skin pigmentation thanks to their genetics but not a total absence of pigmentation like those with albinism.
So keep your eyes open while you're taking a walk in the park, because you might just be lucky enough to spot one of these little beauties.

Bulldog Squeezes Into a Stroller Like 'Tight Jeans' — and It's Impressive
We've all been there. We want to fit into that special outfit that's smaller than anticipated, but go to great lengths to make it work. Whether it's sucking that stomach in or finding just the right angle to slip on that dress or those pants, the mission is to get that garment on one way or another.
Gunner the Bulldog wasn't dealing with a fashion issue, yet size presented a problem when he wanted to sit in a stroller.
@gunnertheenglishbullyIt took him a while but he did it 😂#englishbulldog #dog #funny #englishbulldogsoftiktok #cute
♬ original sound - GunnerTheEnglishBullyIn the TikTok from @gunnertheenglishbully, the precious pooch spotted the stroller from across the room and wanted to get cozy. He tried to hoist himself up from the floor but realized it was too high. Strategically finding another approach, Gunner jumped on the coach and was able to start stepping in the stroller.
Everything was going well with his front paws, but it got a bit dicey when he had to bring over his back end. Gunner shimmied, wiggled, and rearranged his body like a canine contortionist. The Bulldog beauty's determination was admirable, showing no signs of giving up until he accomplished his goal.
Finally, Gunner situated himself in the stroller. Though the fit was a bit snug, he achieved his goal. Gunner held out his paw to his mom for a high five in a show of victory.
"It took him a while, but he did it," the caption raved.
Followers applauded Gunner's commitment and related to the dog's dilemma.
"Me trying to fit in my jeans every day," one shared.
"Ok, I think it's time for a 'larger' stroller," another advised.
"Definitely not his first rodeo!" a follower remarked.
"That wiggle to make himself fit, like putting on tight jeans!!" someone noted.
How Big Do English Bulldogs Get?This popular breed can weigh between 40 and 50 pounds and stand at 12 to 15 inches tall as adults. While those numbers aren't considered astronomical, the Bulldog's bulky build is what puts them into the stocky category. They usually stop growing at around 24 months.
Gunner has the trademark Bulldog physique and knows how to make it work when he needs to squeeze into a small space.

Heroic Firefighters Use a Genius, Unexpected Trick to Rescue a Terrified Cat Trapped in a Deep Drain
A terrified cat trapped inside an enormous drain had rescuers in Malaysia scrambling to find a way to reach it. After an initial attempt didn’t work, the group of firefighters came up with a clever new plan—and what happened next had everyone on pins and needles.
It’s unclear how the cat became stranded in Selangor, Malaysia, but the outcome could have been much worse without the persistence of the local “abang bomba” (a colloquial term for firefighters) in saving it.
Firefighters first tried lowering an open, upside-down umbrella to scoop up the cat to safety, but when the critter couldn't be coaxed inside, they quickly changed course. One rescuer carefully climbed down into the drain with a bucket that was lowered alongside him, and moments later, the frightened feline was gently placed inside and gingerly hoisted to safety.
The gathering crowd cheered when the cat made it topside.
@themalaymailThank you abang bomba for saving the kitty 🥹 #malaymail #cat #firefighters
♬ original sound - themalaymail - themalaymailThe comment section was overflowing with expressions of gratitude, calling the firefighters "heroes" for saving this little kitty's life.
Firefighters are often the first to respond to pet emergencies, but are they the best people to call? 'Yes' is usually the answer, but different situations can call for different experts.
Who to Call If You Find an Animal in TroubleIf you come across an animal in distress, your first instinct might be to jump in and help—but knowing who to call can make all the difference.
For an immediate, life-threatening animal emergency, such as an animal trapped somewhere dangerous, calling 911 is always best. Calling in emergency responders not only protects the animal—it ensures the rescue is done quickly and without putting anyone else at risk. Firefighters are often trained and equipped to handle complex rescues, using both specialized tools and creative problem-solving to ensure a safe outcome.
And if you're unsure of whom to call, a 911 operator can also redirect you to the proper contact, such as your local department of animal control for help with stray animals or your local wildlife rescue for help with wild animals. The American Humane Society can also assist with animals you suspect might be suffering abuse or neglect.
Related: This One State Was Just Ranked the Most Dog-Friendly Place to Travel
For pets with medical emergencies, experts say your first call should always be to your veterinarian, since they know the animal’s medical history and can give the most appropriate advice quickly. If your regular vet isn’t available, a local emergency animal hospital is the next best option. You can also contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center or the Pet Poison Helpline, where veterinary professionals are available 24/7 to guide you through urgent situations. According to Dr Phillip's Animal Hospital, all pet parents should save these numbers to their phones just like they would the contacts for human emergencies.
Knowing who to call – and being prepared with the correct contact information – can turn a stressful moment into a successful outcome. Whether it’s a quick-thinking firefighter, a trusted veterinarian, or a trained specialist, having the right help on speed dial can make all the difference for an animal in need.

This Tennessee Chihuahua Rescue of 100 Dogs Is Breaking Hearts and Giving Hope
The barking inside the house is almost overwhelming at first.
Tiny dogs crowd every corner of the home, climbing over debris and one another while rescuers work carefully through heartbreaking conditions to save as many animals as possible.
@nc5nashville100+ pups rescued from hazardous home in Rutherford Co., Tenn. Our Nick Beres took us inside to see how groups like Animal Rescue Corps literally save the day. The dogs will be treated and cared for at the ARC emergency rescue in Gallatin. @arcorps dogs rescue #tennessee
♬ original sound - NewsChannel 5 - NewsChannel 5TikTok user @nc5nashville shared footage from a massive rescue operation in Rutherford County, Tennessee, where Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) stepped in to save more than 100 vulnerable dogs living in severe overcrowding and neglect.
According to ARC, Rescuers Ultimately Removed:• 133 Chihuahuas
• 1 large dog
• 12 cats
...from the property during what they called “Operation Little Dogs, Big Hearts.”
Related: Rescued Lab Beagle Discovers His Favorite Toy—and His Joy Is Absolutely Contagious
The rescue team first responded after family members sought help for elderly relatives who could no longer properly care for the animals or keep them safely in the home.
But when ARC arrived, responders quickly realized the situation was far worse than expected.
The Organization Described:• Severe overcrowding
• Dangerous, unsanitary conditions
• Floors covered in accumulated feces
• Animals showing signs of stress and aggression
• Serious, untreated medical conditions
• Fight injuries
• Respiratory distress
• Tumors
• Eye infections and ulcers
• Severe dental disease
• Congestive heart failure
Several pregnant dogs, nursing mothers, and vulnerable puppies were rescued first during an emergency assessment before teams returned days later to remove every remaining animal from the property.
One especially emotional detail involved four puppies born after intake at the ARC Rescue Center. Tragicall,y only one survived, though rescuers say the surviving puppy is now beginning to thrive.
People watching the rescue online were emotional not only about the suffering the dogs endured, but also about seeing them finally receive care and compassion.
Many commenters immediately asked how they could adopt one of the rescued Chihuahuas.
ARC Explained:• “We don’t adopt out directly from our shelter.”
• Once healthy, the animals will be transferred to rescue and adoption partners across the country.
• “So amazing to watch in real time!”
• “Thank you from the heart.”
• “This will be a day I will NEVER forget.”
• “To see the community coming together was amazing.”
• “So grateful for the selfless actions of all who helped.”
Honestly, one of the most moving parts of large-scale rescue stories like this is seeing how quickly scared, exhausted animals can begin relaxing once they're finally safe.

Ragdoll Cat’s Graceful Spins Are Giving Tiny Ballerina Energy
A cat's true colors really come out whenever it's time to play. They might be uppity and chill all day, but when their favorite toy comes out, they become like kittens again. It's one of the best things about having a cat!
For one Ragdoll, her favorite toy turns her into an adorable ballerina. It's one of those toys on a string, so her mom was able to bounce it around and get the best spins out of her aspiring dancer:
@gojo.the.ragdollI think he’s in, what do you think? #cat #cats #catsoftiktok #ragdoll #ballet @Mackenzie Davis
♬ Waltz of the flowers (The nutcracker suite) Main Theme(1074033) - Maenomeri48Gojo the Ragdoll could join The Nutcracker in an instant; her leaps are so good! She loves her feather toy, which is one of the most iconic cat toys ever. Even the laziest cats love toys like this: it's just impossible not to want to jump after it!
Gojo typically doesn't practice her ballet unless the feather toy is out, but that's all part of training. As she gets older, she'll learn to dance on her own, and then her career on Broadway can really begin.
Related: Ragdoll Kitten’s Zoomies on Her Walk Prove Everyone Wrong About the Breed
When she's got her feather toy, she's always playing like a graceful ballerina. However, since she's just a kitten, there are some times when she has to play in a less graceful way. For example, whenever she sees some balloons:

♬ Tchaikovsky "Dance of the Reed Flutes"(1257471) - kzyMaybe the feather toy helps her hone her ballet skills, and the balloons are good for her breakdancing skills. She's still got some impressive spins even on the floor.
What Kind of Toys Do Ragdolls Like?Enrichment is the most important part of having an indoor cat. Keeping your cat indoors is what's best for them and the environment, but it also means you'll have to compensate with lots of toys, places to climb, and other things to do.

Ragdoll cats need a few different types of toys, including:
- Independent play toys, like balls, automatic toys, or those plastic springs.
- Interactive toys, like the feather on a string, to allow them to have some playtime with you.
- Different textures to keep them interested.
Each cat will be slightly different in what they prefer: just try everything until you find their favorite ones! Clearly, Gojo prefers her favorite feathery toys!

She's sure to point out that Lady no longer has those Grinchy feet (though those are really the best part of Longhaired Dachshunds, but they will return!).
Do Dachshunds Need Haircuts? How often Dachshunds need haircuts depends on the type of hair they have.
Smooth-haired and Wirehaired Dachshunds are a bit more low-maintenance pups when it comes to haircut maintenance than Longhaired Dachshunds.
Because Longhaired Dachshunds have long, silky coats, they require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles.
Regular haircuts should also be in a rotation of about every six to eight weeks, as well as frequent baths.
"Grinchy" feet are quite cute, but their hair could get so long that they may end up tripping or getting their hair caught on something if it's too long.

Maine Coon Kitten Is Already 3 Feet Long—and Mom Is Freaking Out
Maine Coons are famously huge. You can't have a Maine Coon without their sheer size; otherwise, that's just a regular cat. However, there are some people who really don't understand just how big these impressive cats are.
Take this one for example: this Maine Coon kitten is just a year old, and he's already about 3 feet long. When his mom picked him up, he was over half as long as she was! If that's not freaky enough, he's going to keep growing for 4 more years:

For the first year of their lives, Maine Coons grow rapidly, basically doubling in size frequently. By the time they're a year old, they might look full grown, but they still continue to grow. Over the 3-5 years, Maine Coons continue to develop:
- Muscle.
- Their adult coats.
- Maturity.
- Sharper facial features.
Male Maine Coons take longer to reach full-grown than females, so Maximus might take the full 5 years. Regardless, he has a long way to go: he's just a 3-foot baby!

Pixie has acquired a large fan base throughout her recovery journey, with many applauding her bravery and raving over her natural beauty.
"I love her — I hope she lives forever," one cheered.
"Hope she recovered real well!! She's one of my favorite cats I've seen so far!" another commented.
"She’s so cute with or without ears," a follower remarked.
"Thank you for taking awesome care of my favorite seal!" someone posted.

Tuxedo Cat Dreams in His Sleep -- Then His Dog Brother Does Something Unexpected
Just when you think you’ve seen every adorable cat and dog video social media has to offer, a sleepy Tuxedo Catand a doting dog brother deliver a video so heartwarming you’ll want to watch it on repeat.
Any question about whether animals know when other animals — including different species — are anxious or stressed is answered by this sweet video that recently crossed our social media feed.
In the uplifting TikTok clip, the sleepy tuxedo cat can be seen sprawled out in a deep nap. As the cat snoozes peacefully, he's clearly dreaming, “talking” in his sleep, wiggling his paws and tail, and relaxing into the kind of heavy breathing that only comes with solid rest.
To the cat’s dog brother, however, the feline looks less sleepy and more stressed. That’s when the heartwarming moment clicks into full gear. The gentle dog saunters over to the snoozing tuxedo cat and sniffs around to make sure the cat is okay.

Do Pets Know When an Animal Is Stressed? @littlebearlumiI hope they find each other in every lifetime 💕 #kitten #dog #samoyed #cute
♬ scott street - ☆While this dog is clearly an empathetic pup with a big heart, dogs are actually very skilled at picking up on other animals’ energy — even cats.
Most dogs are keen observers who can detect changes in body language, posture, vocalizations and scent, all of which can shift when another animal is stressed.
While some dogs may respond to a stressed animal by giving them space, many react with curiosity, much like the pup in the video above.
Just like this caring dog brother, many dogs show empathy toward stressed animals, often investigating or even trying to offer comfort.
Social by nature, many dogs know how to read a room — even if that room contains a snoozing tuxedo cat who’s so deep in dreamland it appears to be stressed beyond belief.
Knowing such a sweet dog brother is nearby and looking out for him is surely just the thing this cat needs to calm his sleepy nerves.

Precious, Tiny Lamb Looks Just Like a 'Freshly-Baked Pasture Marshmallow'
While most of us are well acquainted with puppies and kittens, the world is overflowing with adorable baby animals, much to our luck.
TikTok user Krista (@kristaupcountry) is a farmer in gorgeous and scenic Hawai'i. Krista shares her life and her farmland online to her 159k followers. Earlier this week, a new addition joined her flock and was perfectly content smiling up for the camera like an adorable, "freshly baked little pasture marshmallow."

♬ A sprinkle of happiness - asa palette cafeThe lamb, which Krista appropriately labeled a "smiley little cotton ball," was a hit on social media with users calling her a "total vibe."
Caring for Baby LambsTaking care of a baby lamb is actually more labor intensive and technical than most people might think. Newborn lambs must consume up to two ounces of colostrum per pound of body weight within the first 12 hours of being born for vital antibodies that are critical to their immune system. If it's not coming from mom, a colostrum replacer from a human via a bottle is necessary. On top of this, it's highly important that they stay warm and their body temperature does not drop below 99° Fahrenheit, especially before eating.
If a mother isn't able to care for their lamb for whatever reason, a bottle feeding schedule and regimen is necessary for at least the first two weeks of the lamb's life. Humans should choose a quality milk replacer, feed the lamb every four hours, and keep an eye on them to ensure they aren't getting bloated which can be both uncomfortable and dangerous. Around two weeks of age, solid foods like pellets and hay can begin to be introduced into the baby lamb's diet. Lambs can be weaned off of milk once they're strong enough, typically around 30 pounds or within 30 days.
The vast majority of us won't get to take care of a baby lamb (unfortunately) but luckily we can enjoy them vicariously through TikTok, thanks to users like Krista and her adorable little fluff balls out on the island.

7 Hardest Dog Breeds for First-Time Owners
Knowing you’re ready to get a dog and actually finding the right breed for your lifestyle are two very different things. For first-time dog owners, choosing carefully is especially important, since not all breeds are well-suited for beginners.
Some dogs require far more training, patience, and experience than most new owners expect when bringing a pet home. Vets say these challenging dog breeds can be more difficult than they appear—and often catch new dog owners off guard once they settle in.
While experienced owners may be comfortable handling higher-maintenance breeds, or adorable, but stubborn pups, veterinarians generally recommend that beginners start with dogs that are easier to train and more adaptable. That doesn’t mean easy dogs don’t require effort—it simply means some breeds are a better fit for those who have never had a pet before.
Here are the 7 hardest dog breeds for first-time owners, according to a veterinarian.

7 Hardest Dog Breeds for First-Time OwnersChoosing the right dog breed is especially important for first-time owners. While some dogs are easygoing and adaptable, others can be far more demanding in everyday life than they appear. These are the breeds vets say often surprise first-time owners and aren't good pets for those who are new to dog parenting.
Belgian Malinois This breed can be more demanding than it first appears. The Belgian Malinois is known for its bravery, intelligence, and strong guard dog instincts, making it a standout working breed in police and military roles. However, experts often rank it among the hardest dog breeds for first-time owners, particularly for those unprepared for its intensity and constant need for engagement.
Without consistent structure, training, and daily stimulation, this is a bg dog can become more challenging than many first-time owners expect, with behavior issues that often surprise new pet parents.
“The Belgian Malinois is a very smart, high-energy breed that needs a job in order to flourish,” says Julie Hunt, DVM, a veterinarian contributor at Embrace Pet Insurance.
When those needs aren’t met through proper exercise, socialization, and mental engagement, vets warn the breed can develop anxiety and destructive behaviors, making it a poor match for beginners without prior dog-handling experience.
Breed Stats- Personality: Confident, smart, hard-working
- Height: 22-26 inches
- Weight: 40-80 pounds
- Lifespan: 14-16 years
The Cane Corso is a giant breed that was originally bred as a guardian and hunter. This makes it one of the most challenging dog breeds for first-time owners, especially those without experience handling large guardian dogs. “This breed is inherently intelligent, vigilant and aggressive,” Hunt says. “They must be carefully socialized extensively as puppies in order to be well behaved, social dogs that do not pose a risk to humans or other animals.”
While this breed can be devoted to its owner, its strength can be hard for first-time owners to manage, and vets say it can catch many new dog owners off guard with how demanding it is in real life. "The Cane Corso’s tendency toward aggression can be problematic, too," Hunt says. "For many beginners, this is a breed that can feel more challenging than expected without experienced handling, which is why it's not thought of as a beginner-friendly dog."
Breed Stats- Personality: Intelligent, affectionate, majestic
- Height: 23.5-27.5 inches
- Weight: Varies
- Lifespan: 9-12 years
Related: 7 Devoted Dog Breeds That Are True Companions, According to Experts
Chow Chow An independent breed known for its aloof personality walking outside. If you're getting a dog for the first time, you may be drawn to Chow Chows due to their bear-like appearance and fluffy coats. However, Hunt says this medium-to-large size dog breed is known for its independence and originally bred as a guardian, making it inherently aloof. Because its temperament, vets say it can be a challenging breed for first-time dog owners and one of the hardest dog breeds for beginners.
For many new pet parents, this is a breed that can catch owners off guard with how reserved it is in daily life. "This breed tends to bond with one person, possibly a few at most, but they regard all other humans with wariness,” Hunt reveals. “Chows are generally not considered to be good family dogs as a result of their wary and potentially aggressive behavior,” she adds.
This doesn’t mean the Chow Chow can’t be a great dog—it’s just unlikely to be a good fit for a first-time owner, especially those who don’t expect a dog that is more independent and less social than most popular breeds people choose for families.
Breed Stats- Personality: Dignified, bright, serious-minded
- Height: 17-20 inches
- Weight: 45-70 pounds
- Lifespan: 8-12 years
Another harder than expected dog breed that inexperienced dog owners should aviod are Australian Shepherds. First-time dog owners should know before choosing this breed that they have a high level of intelligence, matched only by their athletic nature and high need for exercise. “They need to have a job and significant daily exercise in order to be well-behaved dogs,” Hunt says.
If you live on a farm or area with a lot of land where your dog can roam and run, this herding breed may be a good fit. But, otherwise, this breed is unlikely to be a good match for a first-timer. "The average owner is not able to meet these dogs’ needs for exercise and mental stimulation, and as a result, they can develop behavioral problems,” Hunt says.
Breed Stats- Personality: Smart, work-oriented, exuberant
- Height: 18-23 inches
- Weight: 40-65 pounds
- Lifespan: 12–15 years
This breed looks easy—but isn't. In fact, for many new pet parents, this is one of those dogs that can catch first-time owners off guard with how delicate and demanding it is in everyday handling. So, if you're a first-time dog owner and want a small dog, the Teacup Yorkshire Terrier may not be the rigth match for you.
While extremely popular due to its tiny size, vets often list these teacup breeds among the worst dog breeds for first-time owners because of its fragility and care needs.
These pups are a smaller version of the classic Yorkshire Terrier, weighs under four pounds and is a high-maintenance dog breed to look after. “Teacup Yorkshire Terriers are not good dogs for inexperienced owners,” Hunt says. “If one of these teacup dogs jumps from an owner’s arms to the ground, they can fracture both of their front legs, requiring corrective surgery.”
If you like the idea of a Teacup Yorkshire Terrier but are a first-time owner, Hunt suggests looking into a regular Yorkshire Terrier or other small dog breed. These are still petite, but are slightly more hearty.
Breed Stats- Personality: Affectionate, sprightly, tomboyish
- Height: 7-8 inches
- Weight: Varies
- Lifespan: 11-15 years
The Russell Terrier—also known as a Jack Russell Terrier is a fun-loving breed, but its need for activity can be tough for inexperienced owners and one of the worst dog breeds for seniors. “Jack Russell Terriers are insanely high-energy,” Hunt says. “I have seen many owners struggle to meet their needs for exercise, resulting in a hyper dog terrorizing their home.”
The Russell Terrier is considered one of the highest-energy dog breeds you can get, which many people don't realize. While regular walks, trips to the dog park and runs will help offset some of that, they like to explore off-leash too. That just requires plenty of training first to ensure the safety of your pet—and most first-time dog owners aren’t up for the task, making this small breed surprisingly difficult to have and not ideal for beginners.
Breed Stats- Personality: Alert, inquisitive, lively
- Height: 10-12 inches
- Weight: 9-15 pounds
- Lifespan: 12-14 years
Bulldog can be surprisingly difficult to own for first-time pet parents as they require above-average care. This is often due to the breed’s smushed-in, or brachycephalic, face, Hunt says.
“A Bulldog's face shape causes varying degrees of respiratory compromise,” Hunt says. “Because panting is how dogs dissipate most of their heat, a dog with respiratory compromise is perpetually at risk of heat stroke.”
These medium-sized dogs also have skin folds on their face, and sometimes body, that are prone to developing skin infections. These pups require careful management and care as a result, Hunt says, making this a breed that require more experience than beginners realize.
Breed Stats- Personality: Friendly, courageous, calm
- Height: 14-15 inches
- Weight: 40-50 pounds
- Lifespan: 8-10 years

Why Your Cat Always Follows You to the Bathroom, According to Veterinary Science
Every cat owner knows the feeling. The second the bathroom door closes, paws suddenly appear underneath it like your cat believes you vanished into another dimension. Some cats cry dramatically from the other side of the door, while others walk right in and immediately hop onto the sink counter like they own the place. And as strange as the behavior may seem, experts say there are actually several instinctual reasons cats follow us into the bathroom. While we all love joking that cats simply do not understand personal space, cat behaviorists say the answer is much more connected to routine, curiosity and social bonding.
“The internet is full of wild theories, like cats being secret guardians of bathroom rituals,” cat behaviorist Mieshelle Nagelschneider, owner of The Cat Behavior Clinic in Seattle, told Chewy. “I believe the answer is much simpler and rooted in feline instincts and psychology, as with most cat behaviors.”

Cats naturally pay close attention to their environment and the people they trust most. That means your bathroom routine can easily become one of the most interesting parts of their day, especially if it includes attention, predictable schedules or a temporarily closed door they suddenly feel determined to investigate. And honestly, once you own a cat, privacy quickly becomes optional, and that includes your bathroom time.
The Reason Why Your Cat Follows You to the BathroomOleg Opryshko / Shutterstock.com
One of the biggest reasons cats follow their humans into the bathroom is because they want interaction and attention. According to Nagelschneider, cats are drawn to predictable moments where their humans are sitting still and available to socialize. Whether you are working at a desk, relaxing in bed or brushing your teeth, your cat recognizes those quieter moments as opportunities to bond.
“Cats often feel most comfortable approaching us during these moments because we’re stationary and not moving,” Nagelschneider told Chewy.
Cats are also creatures of habit with surprisingly accurate internal clocks. If your bathroom routine is usually followed by breakfast, treats or playtime, your cat quickly learns to associate those events together. My cat somehow knows the exact moment I wake up and starts following me before I even make it to the bathroom.
Bathrooms themselves can also attract curious cats. Running water, cool tile floors, bath mats and smaller enclosed spaces can all feel appealing to felines who enjoy exploring their environment.
Why Felines Are Biologically Wired to Hate BarriersIf there is one thing many cats seem personally offended by, it is a closed door. “The natural enemy of cats is closed doors,” Maggie Placer, DVM, veterinary science program manager at EveryCat Health Foundation, told Chewy.
Cats are naturally curious and territorial animals, which means barriers can feel frustrating to them. Closed doors limit access to part of their environment, and naturally, many cats want to investigate whatever is happening on the other side.
Related: 2 Signs Your Cat Needs More Exercise, According to a Vet
Bathrooms are also full of interesting smells, sounds and objects that many cats find entertaining. Toilet paper rolls, cabinets, shower curtains and sinks can quickly become part of their investigation. Honestly, my cat treats the bathroom like it is some kind of exclusive VIP lounge she absolutely needs access to at all times.
For some cats, the closed bathroom door itself becomes more interesting than the actual bathroom.
When to Worry: Is It Affection or Clinical Separation Anxiety?Evrymmnt via Shutterstock.com
In most cases, following you into the bathroom is completely normal cat behavior and usually a sign of affection, curiosity or attachment. Research continues to show that cats form strong bonds with their humans, even if they express it differently than dogs. Joining you in smaller spaces like bathrooms can create feelings of safety, predictability and social connection for them.
However, experts say sudden changes in this behavior can sometimes point to a larger issue. According to Dr. Placer, separation anxiety is considered a less common cause for bathroom-following behavior, but pet owners should still speak with their veterinarian if any behavior suddenly changes.
Still, for most cat owners, bathroom supervision is simply part of everyday life with a feline companion.
So while it may feel slightly invasive to have an audience every time you shower or brush your teeth, your cat is probably not trying to make things weird. They just really want to be wherever you are.

This Gorgeous Bird Is Hammering Through a Tree Like He Pays the Mortgage
The giant bird in this video isn't politely pecking at a tree.
He is fully committing to a home renovation project with the confidence of somebody who has watched exactly three episodes of HGTV and now believes he can knock out a load-bearing wall himself.
@accuweatherThis pileated woodpecker had one mission and that tree never stood a chance 🪵🐦
♬ original sound - AccuWeatherTikTok account @accuweather shared this fascinating clip showing a male Pileated Woodpecker aggressively drilling massive holes into a tree while the voiceover explains he has already damaged multiple other spots before moving on to this latest victim.
And honestly? The bird looks deeply serious about his work.

At Different Moments in the Clip:• Huge chunks of wood go flying.
• The bird drills a shockingly large hole.
• He pauses dramatically between strikes.
• The tree appears increasingly concerned about the situation.
• Everyone watching starts wondering if he secretly pays property taxes there.
The caption explained that Pileated Woodpeckers are known for both their striking appearance and hardworking behavior.
And Despite Looking Like Tiny Construction Workers Powered by Rage and Bugs, the Birds Actually Play Important Ecological Roles By:• Hunting insects inside trees
• Creating nesting cavities
• Providing shelter opportunities for other wildlife

• “That’s more than likely a Pileated Woodpecker.”
• “One of the biggest woodpeckers in North America.”
• “It’s digging for carpenter ants and insect larvae inside the tree.”
• “Fun fact: This is the bird that inspired Woody Woodpecker.”
• “I’m pretty sure your tree is already ruined.”
• “It’s actually his tree, and that’s nature, so mind your own business.”
• “Ma’am, that clearly is no longer your tree.”
Honestly, that last comment feels especially accurate because the woodpecker truly behaves like he inherited the property generations ago.
One Commenter Also Perfectly Summarized the Bird’s Energy:“Maybe the woodpecker was a beaver in a previous life?”
And honestly? That feels scientifically possible at this point.
Why Do Pileated Woodpeckers Drill Into Trees? @thegaysiancowboyIve been seeing them around here more often but never can get a good picture or video. But this am , right outside our window , 3 of them! 🥰 #nature #woodpecker #piliatedwoodpecker #birding #birds #texasbirds

Because these birds are so large and powerful, the holes they create can look dramatic compared to those of smaller woodpecker species.
And judging by this determined backyard demolition expert, at least one Pileated Woodpecker is currently treating tree destruction like a full-time profession.

Border Collie Gets Outsmarted by a Horse—and the Role Reversal Is Hilarious
Border Collies are used to being the smartest creature in the field, and honestly, they usually are. They are fast, intense, weirdly strategic, and always look like they're three moves ahead of everybody else, including you. That's why this video is so funny. Watching a Border Collie get a taste of their own medicine from a horse with a full villain grin is like seeing the hall monitor get a prank call from the principal.
It opens with that big, dramatic soundtrack everyone knows, and from there the whole thing commits to the bit immediately. The captions set it up like the popular thriller Apex, and the camera work doesn't hold back. We get these tight little close-ups of the horse looking straight-up cinematic, like he has been waiting years for his moment to shine, and he finally hired a publicist.
View this post on InstagramAnd the Collie isn't loving it.
This dog is used to being the one applying pressure, creating movement, and generally acting like middle management with fur. Now, suddenly, the horse is the one leaning in, crowding the space, flashing that ridiculous grin, and making the whole thing feel like a farmyard psychological thriller made on a lunch break.
It shouldn't be this funny.
But it absolutely is.
View this post on InstagramOne person in the comments admitted to watching it an unhealthy number of times, and honestly, same energy. This is exactly the kind of clip that gets funnier on every replay because you start catching all the little details. The face. The pacing. The horse’s commitment to being a menace. The Collie’s growing realization that the script has changed, and no one told him.
That role reversal is what sends it over the edge.
Because Border Collies are so famously good at controlling chaos that seeing one briefly on the receiving end feels delicious. Not mean, just deeply satisfying. Like the universe handing out one tiny lesson in humility with a soundtrack.
My dog, Lola, would be perfect for a film like this. Her Heeler instincts and stalker mode come online in about half a second, so watching a horse turn that energy back around would absolutely be her kind of cinema. She would either star in it or file a formal protest.
Probably both.
This video works because it knows exactly what it is: dramatic, silly, weirdly well shot, and built around one timeless truth. The enforcer never expects to get enforced right back.

Why Border Collies Get So Intense Around Other AnimalsBorder Collies were bred to control movement, which is why they can look so focused, intense, and occasionally a little overbearing around other animals. That “stalker mode” is part instinct, part job description, and part personality when you're dealing with a really switched-on herding dog.
Turns out the horse had notes, and this time the Collie was the one being herded.

Golden Retriever Siblings Show Their Bond in the Sweetest Way—and People Are Emotional
A tender moment captured between Golden Retriever siblings is giving viewers all the feels for its deeper, surprising meaning. As one dog gently licks the other's face, this simple gesture is about much more than affection; it signifies how bonded the brothers, Blu and Benny, are. This type of grooming is a way of saying, "No matter what, we're a pack."
While other clips on their TikTok account show them engaging in plenty of hilarious hijinks, it's clear these Goldens share a deep brotherly love. As the caption states, these boys are "bonded forever."

But why licking? There are a variety of reasons why one dog will groom another, but the act itself originates in the earliest days of a pup's life.
What It Means When Dogs Groom Each OtherExperts like vet Alycia Washington agree that licking is a natural behavior that puppies learn after receiving similar affection from their mothers. So, it stands to reason that this behavior grows with them and is paid forward to other dogs (and humans) in their future families.
Certified animal behaviorist Mary Burch seconds this while going on to explain that licking "might also give a dog a feeling of security and comfort, just as the dog had when licked by its mother in the litter.”
Dogs do explore the world and gather information best through senses like smell and taste, so it stands to reason that licking would be common practice. But when dogs lick each other’s faces and ears, it’s usually a sign of connection, not just curiosity. Grooming like this helps strengthen bonds, ease tension, and communicate trust within their pack.
Licking can also act as a calming or peacemaking signal, especially between closely bonded dogs like Blu and Benny. On a biological level, the behavior may even release feel-good hormones, reinforcing that sense of comfort and closeness.
In other words, while it might look like a small gesture, this kind of grooming is one of the quiet ways dogs say, “we’re good—we’re together.”
