People Can't Scroll Past This Rescue Dog's Smile—and His Story Makes It Even Better

4 hours 39 min ago

Bandit looked scared when his new mom first met him, but somehow, he still managed to smile. He tucked his tail and looked unsure of what was happening around him. But when she reached out to pet him, she noticed something that made her stop: a sweet little smirk.

“I could see it in his eyes, the loving and sweet soul he was,” Bandit’s mom tells ParadePets over email. “He was trying his best to be confident and was giving me a sweet little smirk as I went up to pet him. I instantly fell in love with him.”

That smile would become one of Bandit’s most recognizable features and the main reason people stop and follow his social media profile.

The Story Behind Bandit’s Famous Animated Dog Smile View this post on Instagram

“I would describe Bandit’s smile as animated,” his mom says. “He truly looks like a dog out of a movie.”

The people who follow him on social media agree. The comments read like a group of strangers who all stumbled onto the same wonderful thing at once.

“OMG his eyes, he is the poster pup for Pixar pet movies,” one fan wrote.

Another added, “I will follow a rescue dog account to the ends of the earth. Shelter dogs RULE. And look at the smile on this one!” wrote another.

“You can see his pure happiness. Thanks for giving him a wonderful life.”

His mom’s goal for the page is simple. She wants people to smile and laugh at his silly faces and behaviors. Based on the response, that is working.

Bandit’s Journey From Rescue Shelter Dog to Beloved Pet View this post on Instagram

Bandit came from a rescue shelter. All his mom knows is that he was hit by a car at some point, leaving a scar on his leg. That left him cautious.

During the first months at home, he needed time to understand and accept that he was safe. Slowly, he settled into a routine and began to show more of the personality that had been hidden beneath the stress.

But his smile was evident from the start. “It was there from day one,” his mom says.

Why Adopting a Shelter Dog Will Change Your Life

Dogs in shelters rarely show their true character. They look scared and anxious from all the noise around them. But put them out of the shelter for a day, and you see a completely different dog.

Bandit’s mom for anyone thinking of a rescue pup right now is simple. She knows that the decision can feel huge and that having a dog is a serious commitment. At the same time, she says adopting Bandit was the best decision she has ever made.

“Now I can’t imagine my life without him,” she admits. And her advice for anyone browsing through shelter dogs right now, trying to decide, is direct: “Just do it. It will save both of your lives.”

Brave German Shepherd Goes Head-to-Head With Everyday Objects and Immediately Regrets It

5 hours 39 min ago

Potato the German shepherd lives with three other dogs. They all carry the fearless gene and will stop at nothing. Potato is the exception and the proof that not all German shepherds are fearless protectors and guardians.

As his mom explained in the latest video, “Before anyone asks why I don’t do this with the other dogs, because unfortunately they aren’t scared of anything. Potato is my only willing victim.”

🐶SIGN UP to get “pawsitivity” delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

Potato, the youngest of the Jade the Sable GSD pack, has to show his bravery against everyday items. His mom put the obstacles in the hallway, and he has to go through them to show off his fearlessness.

The Balloons Got an Immediate No

The first obstacle: balloons with potato drawings on them. The moment he sees the “scary” balloons, Potato retreats to safety. Then, curiosity kicked in. He sniffs them before quickly retreating again with his tail tucked. It was as if the balloons confirmed everything he suspected. He tries again, edging back toward them, attempting to summon some kind of courage. After another brief look, he’s done and heads for the room.

The next challenge is the vacuum of doom. As he emerges into the hallway, he spots the machine. This time, he moves closely for inspection and notices the vacuum isn’t running. His logical conclusion is that the vacuum is asleep, and he quickly makes his way past it.

The third challenge is the moving toys, better known as “possessed toys.” At first, he seems interested as they look like potential new friends. Then they move and make noises, quickly ending any potential friendship.

The last challenge is “the imposters,” dolls that look like his siblings. But he quickly backs away in the room and waits for them to leave.

Why Do Dogs Get Spooked By Random Objects?

Turns out, Potato is not the only dog afraid of random objects. German shepherds are alert and sensitive dogs. While they were bred as guard and protective dogs, there are exceptions like Potato.

One fan shared a similar experience, saying, “My big, massive German shepherd male was terrified of garbage bags and moths. My great big protector, as soon as you went to take the garbage out of the garbage can, would run to his kennel and hide.”

Another added, “My boy is exactly like Potato, scared of his own shadow.”

This behavior is common with novel stimuli. Dogs are wary of objects that are unfamiliar, unpredictable, or behave differently from what they expect. That includes a balloon floating strangely through the air, a vacuum making a sudden noise, or a toy that moves by itself.

Previous experiences matter, too. Dogs that have been startled by something are cautious around similar things later. For all the guarding instincts, you will find a German shepherd who sees a plastic bag floating across the yard and thinks that is his cue to hide.

Deaf Cat's Cute Little Noises Sound Like 'He's Contacting the Mother Ship'

5 hours 57 min ago

Some cats are certainly vocal than others, but if you’re a cat parent, you already know that they each find their own way of communicating with their people. There are kitties who will meow loudly all day, just to make sure you don’t forget the sound of their voice, and others who will only speak up when they really have something to say.

And then, there’s Otter, a deaf black cat who walks around making the cutest little noises who has the internet falling in love with him.

@iamgooseontheloose

just a noisy little guy #catsoftiktok #tiktokcats #rescuecats #deafcat #fyp

♬ original sound – goose, otter & lettuce

Otter’s mom describes him as “deaf and noisy” in her TikTok bio, and that really does seem to sum up who this cat is. He may not be able to hear, but he is excellent at making sure he is heard.

Those little trills are just too cute, and he sounds so happy, roaming around chirping.

One commenter compared his little sounds to an alien “contacting the mother ship,” and another said he sounds like he’s underwater. Either way, Otter definitely sounds precious.

Related: Deaf Cat Realizes His Mom Is Home, and the Sound He Makes Is Melting Hearts

What Do Different Cat Noises Mean?

You may have heard your cat make noises similar to the ones that Otter makes… or about a dozen other sounds.

Some kitties can be quite vocal, and usually, those noises all mean something different. After all, cats meow to communicate with us, not each other.

An orange cat meowing in a bed

Tatiana Meteleva / Getty Images

As PetMD points out, here are some of the most common noises cats make and what they usually mean:

  • The classic meow: Your cat is trying to communicate something to you — whether they’re saying hi, asking for food, or letting you know you forgot to fill their water bowl.
  • The chirp: They’re excited about something going on, and might have seen a bird or a small animal out the window.
  • Growling and hissing: This means your cat is displeased, either with you or another animal in the household.
  • Trilling: Like Otter’s noises, trilling usually means they’re happy and is a sign they are well bonded to you.
  • Purring: They’re very happy, though sometimes it can be a sign that something is wrong if accompanied by behavior like flattened ears or being hunched over.

Our cats may not be able to speak any human language, but don’t worry. When they want to tell you something, they’ll make sure they get their message across.

Tiny French Bulldog Puppy With Cleft Palate Makes Her 'Big Feelings' Loud and Clear

6 hours 17 min ago

Dogs who are born with physical challenges quickly adapt to their environment thanks to their impressive grit and resilience. Canines are able to acclimate and take part in daily activities despite limitations, quickly learning how to navigate the world around them. Whether they have a mobility issue, blindness, or a facial abnormality, these fur babies don’t let it stop them from living their best lives.

Dolly the French Bulldog puppy is a perfect example of an animal not being deterred just because she’s a little different. The precious pooch was born with a cleft palate but still has no problem using her voice.

@crurescue

Demanding Dolly has big feelings 🤣🤣

♬ original sound – Cleft Rescue Unit

Dolly is currently a resident of the Cleft Rescue Unit (CRU). Founded in 2023, the organization rescues medically fragile puppies and connects them with healthcare agencies and children facing similar challenges. Dolly also has hydrocephalus, so the team is helping her heal from the condition while adapting to life with a cleft palate.

Apparently, Dolly isn’t aware she has any physical issues and maintains that classic French Bulldog sass. A recent TikTok from @crurescue showed the canine cutie vocalizing her strong opinions with a staff member, though it was hard to tell what had her in such a mood.

“Demanding Dolly has big feelings,” the caption read as Dolly repeatedly voiced her emotions, clearly not holding back.

Followers got a kick out of Dolly’s verbal tirade and loved her spicy personality:

  • “All that attitude in that little body. Adorable,” one remarked.
  • “Small pup, BIG opinions!” another noted.
  • “She is not having it today,” a follower pointed out.
  • “I don’t know what she’s saying but follow it to the T!” someone advised.
  • “She has a lot to get off her chest,” a fan pointed out.
How Common Is Cleft Palate in Dogs?

Cleft palate affects about 3% of newborn, purebred puppies and can be even more frequent in certain breeds. This condition also impacts mixed breed puppies and can develop in older dogs due to trauma or other health issues. Cleft palate is usually corrected with surgery.

Dolly is being treated with medication for the swelling that comes with hydrocephalus. A previous post revealed that she shows no signs of pain or discomfort. The team at CRU is monitoring Dolly closely and committed to her continued progress.

CRU’s mission is to provide hope and healing to puppies with cleft palates and craniofacial conditions. For more information on this organization, visit their website.

Mini Pony ‘Leads’ Great Dane Around—and They’re Basically the Same Size

6 hours 27 min ago

Great Danes are well-known for being massive. They’re one of the largest dog breeds ever, and they legitimately make other dogs and even other animals look tiny. It’s wild, and it never gets old!

Recently, one Great Dane got to show off his own bond with another huge animal: a mini pony! When you see the two of them standing side-by-side, it’s a little bit difficult to tell who’s who, except for that adorable pink collar:

@glynis_leigh

The ALPACAS #minihorse #greatdane #alpaca #farm #glynisleigh

♬ original sound – Glyn

Glyn is a KC native and physician who also happens to have a hobby farm. She has this mini pony, some alpacas, and even an emu! It’s awesome, and while all of her animals are great, there’s something very special about this pony/Great Dane combo.

The two of them are the best of friends. The pony loves the Great Dane in particular because he’s able to reach his collar, which makes it easier to lead him around. He likes to drag his dog bestie into all kinds of trouble. It’s not too much dragging, though, since the Great Dane also loves causing trouble!

Related: Great Dane Puppy Goes From Tiny Calf to Full-Blown Cow in Just One Month

The two of them seem to share a brain cell as well as their size. When one gets the zoomies, the other isn’t too far behind. Their mom thinks it’s overwhelming, but I think it’s hilarious and awesome:

@glynis_leigh

I really can’t have one moment of peace #zoomies #greatdane #minihorse #farm #glynisleigh

♬ original sound – Glyn

When they’re running like that, it’s kind of hard to tell who is who. They would never, but if they were to fight, I don’t even know who the winner would be!

Are Mini Ponies Good With Dogs?

The mini pony living on this farm has grown up around other animals, including dogs. He’s just one of them, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. However, getting to that point can be a little bit difficult!

Ulrich Rosenschild / Getty Images

Whether your mini pony will get along well with a dog depends on them and their environment. Generally, they’re kind and gentle-natured, but dogs can be intimidating, especially larger breeds like the Great Dane. If you want your pony and your dog to get along, you should:

  • Introduce them slowly.
  • Keep a fence between them at first.
  • Only let them interact when supervised.

Ideally, you’d introduce your pony to a dog when they’re still young: regular exposure while they’re growing up will normalize dogs for them. In time, maybe they can be besties, just like these two!

Cat's One-of-a-Kind 'Thumbs' Have People Saying She's 'Flipping the Bird'

6 hours 32 min ago

If ever there were one species destined to stage a coup and take over the world, it’d 100% be felines. Even when cats aren’t trying to appear menacing, sometimes they just are. Between their always-judging expressions and the way they learn how to manipulate us into giving a few more treats, the future is feline.

When the takeover happens, it’ll likely be a Calico cat named Meow Meow at the helm, if only because of her strange, yet unique-looking paws that appear as though she’s waving a middle finger at the world. Bow down to your new ruler.

@not.called.xiaomi

Oh my god, this super cute cat! #calicocat #cat #catlover #meow #cutepets

♬ suara asli – Not Called Xiaomi – Not Called Xiaomi

Meow Meow may be a Calico by our standards, but clearly her DNA screams vigilante with those pointed “thumbs.” Is she the victim of internet stardom, or does this kitty want the world to feel her wrath?

As one fan wondered, is she “smiling while flipping me the bird?” Another added she’s technically flipping the “double bird.” With her infamous (and devious) little grin, the question is up for debate as this Calico keeps her friends close and her enemies closer.

To make this polydactyl princess even more diabolical, her early days on the Tok may just steal your heart.

Related: Enormous Maine Coon Cat Uses Gargantuan Paws to Pickpocket a Purse

Though Meow Meow only just appeared seemingly out of nowhere one January 2026 day, she immediately had the presence of greats. Other posts explain she was born a special-needs kitty, but we’d argue she’s just plain special. This is one girl who can work a camera like nobody’s business.

@not.called.xiaomi

Mom? Is this the cat cartoon you found for me? Play? What? #calicocat #cat #catlover #meow #cutepet

♬ suara asli – Not Called Xiaomi – Not Called Xiaomi Why Do Some Cats Look Like They Have Thumbs?

Cats with extra digits or “thumbs” are considered polydactyl. This genetic condition is caused by one parent carrying a dominant gene that causes an extra sprouting of toes (and beans!), giving their offspring a 50% chance of inheriting the same.

While typical felines have 18 toes total—five on front paws and four on the back—anything after that puts them in the “polydactyl” category. Some breeds, like Maine Coons, are known for producing polydactyl kitties who use their colossal, multi-beaned “mitts” to better climb, explore, and catch small prey like their ship-living ancestors beloved by sailors.

@not.called.xiaomi

It bites the charger all day long, it’s probably ruined its own battery! #calicocat #cat #catlover #meow #cutepet

♬ suara asli – Not Called Xiaomi – Not Called Xiaomi

It isn’t painful and doesn’t progress in any way, but keeping the extra claws trimmed prevents them from growing into their pads. Being born with extra toes that, when smashed together, can look like furry mittens is something of an adorable sight.

If you ever spot a polydactyl cat like Meow Meow (or adopt one), consider yourself lucky to have a companion blessed with a little extra sparkle—even if their paws resemble an offensive gesture!

Black Cat With Rare Condition Looks Like a Furby Come to Life

7 hours 27 min ago

Has anyone else seen Jimothy the Raccoon? He had no neck. I’m obsessed with him. I’ve never seen anything quite like him… Well, until I saw this sweet black cat. She looks just like him!

While she looks like Jimothy, she’s also definitely giving “real-life Furby” vibes, but less scary. Furbies kind of freak me out, but if they all looked like this sweet cat, I’d like them a whole lot more! You have to see her for yourself:

@shortspine_meemers

♬ Doing Nothing Well – Sepia Lounge

Meemers the Black Cat is the cutest. She legitimately looks like someone just glued her head to her shoulders. Other than the missing neck, she looks like a normal cat! Because of her lack of neck, though, she has to walk a little differently.

She’s treated like a princess, always getting what she wants. Her mom isn’t about to let Short Spine Syndrome keep her kitty from living her life, and Meemers loves her for it. The two of them go on walks, play with toys, and snuggle every single day!

Related: Grey Maine Coon Gives Birth to a Perfect Litter of Moon Rocks

Meemers has everybody asking all kinds of questions, but one of the biggest ones is simple: where is her tail? What does it look like? Luckily, Meemers has a mom who loves to give the people what they want:

@shortspine_meemers

You’ve been wondering where her tail is. It’s entered the chat. #shortspinesyndrome #catsoftiktok #cattok #Meemers #fy

♬ Her – The American Dawn

Well, there you have it, folks: she doesn’t have a tail. She has a slightly longer patch of fur, but that’s about it. There’s no tail in sight, and honestly, I like it better that way. With a tail, she’d look unbalanced!

What Is Short Spine Syndrome?

Meemers was born with Short Spine Syndrome. She’s a rescue: she was left outside a shelter in a box. They saw that she was a little different and didn’t want her… But luckily, her now-mom wanted her!

Grace Cary / Getty Images

Short Spine Syndrome is a congenital birth defect that can happen in any animal. The spine doesn’t develop properly in utero, leading to compressed and fused vertebrae and, typically, the absence of a neck. There are a few things to know:

  • It doesn’t cause pain in most cases.
  • In some instances, it can lead to mobility issues.
  • You might need to help a pet with SSS out, accommodating their shorter neck with elevated food and water bowls.
  • Short Spine Syndrome doesn’t impact lifespan.

A cat, raccoon, or even a human with Short Spine Syndrome can live a long and full life, with a few adjustments. Luckily, Meemers has everything she needs!

Goldendoodle Gives Birth to a Perfect Litter of Chocolate-Covered Curly Fries

8 hours 27 min ago

Goldendoodles are my guilty pleasure. I don’t want to have one, but I love looking at them and petting them whenever I come across one. They’re so precious! Maybe one day, I’ll have the patience to get one, but for now, I’ll love them from afar.

Recently, a Goldendoodle became a mama, and her puppies are cute as can be. The puppies all look like precious little curly fries, but to make it even better, some of them are chocolatey brown:

Charlotte Doodles has two different litters in this video: the regular black/brown Doodles, and the Merle ones. All of them are giving chocolate-coated curly fry vibes! We’ve got milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and everything in between.

In this video, they were all super excited to see their human caretaker, who had just come home from a trip. She was happy to see them, too! Puppies grow rapidly for the first few months, so even taking a few days away will have you coming back to completely different pups!

Related: Golden Retriever Gives Birth to a Litter of Fresh-Baked Biscuit Babies

The puppies are about 8 weeks old now, so they’re ready to go to their forever homes. Interestingly, some of them will be making a very long journey, even going on an airplane! Watching her prepare them for that was so interesting:

♬ Vlog – wouldliker

All of them made it safely to their forever homes. Transporting puppies and other animals on airplanes is nothing new, but it’s always good to have confirmation that everything went well!

How Do You Transport Animals On Planes?

The caretaker at Charlotte Doodles didn’t fly with the puppies: she sent them off on their flights without her. They made it, but it must have been a little scary!

Houston Chronicle/Hearst Newspapers / Getty Images

When an animal is going to be transported on a plane by themselves, there are lots of logistics involved. You can’t just buy them a ticket and move on! You’ll need to:

  • Find an airline willing to transport live cargo, which many are not.
  • Have someone go with them, or hire a “flight nanny” if you can’t find anyone.
  • Get their vaccine certificates ready to go.
  • Get to the airport several hours early.

It can be tougher on the puppy than normal ground transport, and not all breeders/shelters/rescue programs will offer it. If you can, offer to fly to pick up your pup and fly back with them yourself!

This Record Breaking Maine Coon Has More Toe Beans Than You Can Count

8 hours 27 min ago

I thought my maine Coon cat named Meatball had a lot of toe beans.

Then I met Erebus.

This ridiculously fluffy gray Maine Coon kitten has so many extra toes that his family literally started counting them because they suspected they might have a Guinness World Record holder living in their house. They were right. Erebus officially holds the Guinness World Record for the most toes on a cat, and I don’t even want to imagine how long it takes to trim all those tiny claws.

@kendraschultz81 ♬ Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes

The adorable video was shared by TikTok user @kendraschultz81 and features Erebus proudly showing off his impressively oversized paws.

According to WFRV Local 5, Erebus was born with 29 toes. His family, Kendra and Hunter of Blue Northern Maine Coons, realized almost immediately that they might have something extraordinary on their hands and carefully counted every single toe. After completing Guinness World Records’ verification process, Erebus officially became the new world record holder for the most toes on a cat.

Related: Newborn Polydactyl Maine Coon Kitten Sucks Her Extra Toe Bean Just Like a Thumb

Watching him stretch his toes out is honestly mesmerizing because those giant paws somehow make an already enormous breed look even bigger.

If I had 29 toes, I’d probably trip over all of them.

What Is Polydactyly in Cats? @kendraschultz81

#Guinness #mainecoon #polydactyl #kitten #wisconsin

♬ are you ready? – NEU SONG.

Polydactyly is a naturally occurring genetic trait that causes cats to be born with extra toes. While it can occur in many breeds, it’s especially common in Maine Coons, where the extra toes are thought to have helped their ancestors walk more easily through snow and rough terrain.

Most polydactyl cats have one or two extra toes on some of their paws, but Erebus takes things to an entirely different level with an astonishing 29 toes.

The condition isn’t usually painful, and many polydactyl cats live completely normal, healthy lives. In fact, many pet parents think the oversized paws make them even more adorable.

Personally I’m just imagining 29 little pink toe beans.

That’s almost too much cuteness for one kitten. We can’t wait to see these toe beans when he grows to full size!

Senior Dog Still Cries for the Family Who Left Him at the Shelter, and It's Heartbreaking

9 hours 17 min ago

Dogs who are surrendered to shelters after spending their lives with one family have an especially difficult time with the transition. To go from a loving home for years to a chaotic shelter is a traumatic change, causing major confusion and anxiety in canines.

Gunner the 8-year-old dog was recently brought to Cobb County Animal Services when his family relocated, and the sweet senior is completely shattered.

@sharing.lov3

⬇️ READ HIS STORY ⬇️ While volunteering at the shelter the other day, I came across a really sad dog just laying in his kennel, looking completely hopeless… I looked at his kennel card, and I couldn’t understand how a dog like this ended up here.. Gunner is good with kids, cats, and dogs. He is housebroken, and he is a senior. I also saw that he had been surrendered on August 7th, so I went to find out why. I was told that his family was moving to another state and said they couldn’t take him with them. They told the shelter they had had Gunner since he was a puppy. They said he was an amazing dog, wonderful with children, dogs, and even cats. And somehow, after an entire lifetime with the same family, Gunner ended up alone in a shelter. At 8 years old, he is now trying to understand why everything he has ever known suddenly disappeared. 😭 When you walk into the shelter on the side where Gunner’s kennel is, you can hear him howling. He howls from inside his kennel for most of the day. 💔 I decided to take him outside for a walk, hoping I could somehow cheer him up, even just a little. But what happened outside broke my heart even more. Gunner couldn’t really focus on me. He kept looking around, over and over again, almost as if he was waiting for someone to show up. Almost as if he was hoping his family would come back for him. And then he started crying… 😭 He looked around everywhere, crying nonstop, and I just cried along with him. I tried to comfort him. I told him he was a good boy, and I told him I was going to make a beautiful video for him…🥺 I also told him that there is a whole village of people who are going to help me find him a family. I promised him that somewhere out there, there is a perfect family waiting for him. A family who will love him, give him the rest of the life he deserves, and NEVER, EVER leave him wondering where they went again. Will you please help me keep my promise to Gunner? 💔 #senior #dog #heartbreak #story #rescue

♬ som original – Músicas Legendadas – Músicas Legendadas

In the TikTok from @sharing.lov3, Gunner was lying down in his kennel with a heartbroken expression on his face. The social media post explained Gunner’s devastating sadness.

“His family was moving to another state and said they couldn’t take him with them,” the caption shared. “They told the shelter they had had Gunner since he was a puppy. They said he was an amazing dog, wonderful with children, dogs, and even cats.”

Despite being a devoted and amazing family member, Gunner was surrendered to the shelter. Now he’s in total emotional anguish at the loss of his family.

“Somehow, after an entire lifetime with the same family, Gunner ended up alone in a shelter,” the story continued. “At 8 years old, he is now trying to understand why everything he has ever known suddenly disappeared.”

Gunner Keeps Searching for His Family

Gunner can’t contain his sadness, and often howls throughout the day from his kennel. A shelter staff member brought Gunner outside for some sunshine in the hopes of cheering him up, yet his first priority was to look for his family.

“He kept looking around, over and over again, almost as if he was waiting for someone to show up,” the caption read. “Almost as if he was hoping his family would come back for him.”

When Gunner realized no one was coming, he broke down in total sorrow.

“He started crying,” the post revealed. “He looked around everywhere, crying nonstop.”

Gunner was too distraught to be comforted, despite the staff member’s best efforts to soothe him. She brought him back to his kennel along with some plush toys and cozy blankets to keep him comfortable, though she knew it wasn’t enough to take away the heartbreak he was going through.

The team at Cobb County Animal Services is committed to finding this loving fur baby a true forever home, where he never has to worry about being left behind ever again.

Schnauzer's Epic Human-Like Side-Eye Makes Him Look Just Like 'Somebody's Uncle'

10 hours 17 min ago

There’s a moment in this video where Gus just… looks directly at his mom. That’s the whole thing. That’s the entire video, really, and somehow it’s enough to have thousands of people convinced this adorable Miniature Schnauzer is secretly a 60-year-old man.

Here’s what happened. Gus’s mom, who posts as Gus and Dolly’s Adventures, tells him that it’s potato night. “Gus, eat your potato,” she says. “We don’t have no more chicken.” Fair enough, groceries happen.

But Gus, who’s got this scrumptious chocolate-and-white coat, eyebrows like a college professor, and a beard that honestly belongs on someone who’s spent decades on an abandoned island, does not take the news well. He doesn’t bark or whine at all, or do anything a normal disappointed dog might do. He just slowly rotates his head toward her and gives her a look. THE look. “Don’t look at me like that,” she says, and he just keeps doing it anyway.

@guss.crazy.dog.mo

Attitude my Gus gives me #schnauzersoftiktok #Gusthedog #funnydogs #dogsoftiktok

♬ original sound – Gus and Dolly’s Adventures

I’ve watched this clip so many times, now I’m trying to figure out why it’s so funny, and I think it’s because his face isn’t doing dog things. It’s doing person things. That specific blend of exhaustion and betrayal you’d see on someone who just got told their flight got bumped to standby.

People in the comments picked up on this immediately. Someone wrote, “he said, don’t nobody want no mf potato,” which, honestly, feels accurate to his expression. Another comment: “He put the Gus in disGUSted!” (I groaned, then laughed, in that order.) Somebody else said he looks like “a grumpy old man trapped in a sweet doggie’s body,” which might be the most accurate sentence ever typed into a TikTok comment section.

But the one that got me was simple: “Gus is somebody’s uncle.” No further explanation given. None needed.

Related: French Bulldog Tries to Nap—His F.O.M.O. Has Other Plans

And then, buried a little further down, this: “Me and Gus worked the oil rig back in 81. Helluva dude.” I have no idea what that means and I don’t want to know. It’s perfect as is.

So why do dogs pull off expressions this human? Turns out there might be a real answer, and it’s not just us projecting.

Why Do Schnauzers Have Such Human-Like Expressions??

A study published this year in the journal iScience, covered by Science Daily, actually looked inside dogs’ brains to see what happens when they look at human faces. Researchers used brain scans and found that when dogs see a happy human face, specific parts of their brain light up, areas tied to higher-level thinking and to reward. In other words, a smile isn’t just a shape to a dog. It seems to mean something.

What’s probably even more interesting is that dogs don’t just sort human expressions into “good” and “bad” expressions. The same researchers found that dogs showed different brain activity for anger, fear, and sadness. That’s the first real evidence that dogs can tell those specific emotions apart rather than just reacting to negativity in general.

Nobody tested “disappointed about potatoes” specifically, so I can’t tell you Gus is scientifically annoyed. But the researcher who led the study, Laura Cuaya, made a point: dogs didn’t inherit this ability from a shared ancestor like humans and other primates might have. They developed it through thousands of years of just being around us, learning to read our faces because their whole existence depended on understanding what we wanted.

So maybe that’s what’s happening with Gus. Chicken was the deal. Chicken didn’t happen. And somewhere in that little Schnauzer brain, something registered the gap between expectation and reality, and his face did the rest.

That’s not really a dog face, when you get down to it. That’s an uncle finding out dinner plans changed without so much as a phone call.

Which Small Dog Breed Matches Your Soul, Based on Your Birth Month

10 hours 17 min ago

The best small dog breed for you is easier to find than you might think. While some people may want to research different pups to determine which one they think will be the best fit for their lifestyle, others might want to leave it up to the universe and see which one matches them based off their birth month. In that case, these tiny pups are known as soul dogs.

After all, since every birth month has its own cosmic energy and carries a unique vibration, a different dog breed will be aligned with each one. Therefore, the month you were born can reveal if you are destined to have a calm dog breed, an adventurous canine, or even a protective small dog based on your own zodiac sign’s core personality traits. While choosing your furry companion shouldn’t be just based on your birthday alone, it can help you narrow down which furbaby you want to welcome into your home and can also be one more element that can help you get clearity along your journey to becoming a dog mom or dad.

To see which small dog breed reflects your soul, based on your birth month, keep reading to see what astrologer Lisa Stardust says. These adorable pint-sized pets align with your birth month based off of astrology and numerology and may even be a breed that wasn’t on your radar, but they can end up being you forever furry friend.

The Small Dog Breed That Matches Your Soul, Based on Your Birth Month

Each birth month is linked to a tiny dog breed, known as a soul animal, with expert personality insights behind each match.

January: Scottish Terrier Scottish Terriers are beloved by Capricorn and Aquarius zodiac signs.

Getty Images Andrey Kanyshev

Capricorn and Aquarius energy come together in January birth months. So, if you’re a January baby who knows exactly what you want, a Scottish Terrier may be your canine kindred spirit. “Scotties are known to be spirited, loyal and a little bit stubborn, which is the energy of these signs,” Stardust says. “They like to be independent, making this a good human-dog match.”

Overall, Scotties are a dream for January animal lovers who have a strong sense of self and aren’t afraid to stand their ground. Like their zodiac counterparts, these confident dogs can be determined while still forming strong bonds with their people. Therefore, if you’re looking for a loyal pup with plenty of personality, the Scottie may be your dream pet.

February: Shetland Sheepdog Shetland Sheepdog are destined to be pets of those born in February.

Getty Images Amalie Bonsaksen

If you were born in February, you may be wondering, “Which small dog animal matches my birth month best? The good news is, Stardust says it’s the Shetland Sheepdog as they are affectionate without being overly clingy. “They are good for Aquarius and Pisces signs,” she explains. “Pisces love to have sympathetic relationships, while Aquarius can give their pet the independence to do what they want to do.”

That combo makes the Shetland Sheepdog a sweet pet for February babies who want a loving furbaby in their life without giving up their independence.

March: Pug Ths adorable tiny dog mirrors March’s birth month.

March babies may have found their match in a dog that’s beloved by many: the Pug. “Pugs are charming, affectionate and adaptable, which is why they are really good pets for the energy of Pisces and Aries birth months,” Stardust explains.

In other words, a Pug’s playful personality and loving nature make it a natural fit for March pet parents. Pisces can appreciate this breed’s sweet, cuddly side, while Aries may connect with the Pug’s fun-loving, spirited personality. For anyone looking for a tiny dog that loves being part of the family, this adorable breed checks all those boxes.

April: Miniature Poodle Poodles are pretty spirit animals.

Getty Images Flora Jakab

A little confidence, a little glamour and plenty of personality? That sounds like someone with an April birthday—and a Miniature Poodle!

“Poodles are show dogs, making them have a lot in common with April-born Aries and Taurus,” Stardust reveals.

After all, these pretty small dogs are known for their polished appearance, confident personalities and intelligence. That combination suits the bold, energetic side of Aries while giving Taurus plenty of style and sophistication to appreciate.

May: Cocker Spaniel These are energetic soul dogs.

Getty Images Ekaterina savyolova

That lively spirit makes the Cocker Spaniel a fun sidekick for May-born people who don’t mind keeping up with an energetic dog. Their playful, affectionate personality can appeal to Gemini’s social side, while their love of activity gives Taurus a reason to get outside and stay moving. So, if your idea of a perfect day involves getting out, having fun and staying busy, the Cocker Spaniel might be your birth-month match.

While the Cocker Spaniel veers into medium-sized territory, this breed is the smallest member of the American Kennel Club’s Sporting Group, making them petite by comparison. “Cocker Spaniels have lots of energy, which is why they are good for Taurus who like being busy and active, and for Gemini, who are high energy,” Stardust says.

June: German Spitz These cuddly pups reflect qualites of its June birth month.

Getty Images Santiaga

Gemini and Cancer both show up in the month of June, which is why Stardust recommends a German Spitz for those born during this time. “These dogs are very high-spirited, which is good for Gemini,” Stardust states. “But they’re also cuddly and furry, which is great for Cancer.”

All-in-all, they capture the best of both signs and give those with June birthdays a little bit of everything: a lively playmate when they’re feeling social and an affectionate cuddle buddy when they want to slow down.

July: Dachshund  These tiny dogs are small, cute and fierce.

Getty Images Kristina Chizmar

Which small dog are July birth months destined to have? Since they need a dog with a big heart, the Dachshund has plenty of love packed into their long little body.

After all, July hosts Cancer season, before segueing to Leo season. Because of that, people born in July are naturally compatible with the these short-legged dogs, according to Stardust. “Dachshunds are loyal and very tender,” she says. “Thase qualties vibe well with Cancers and Leos.”

August: Beagle A friendly and fun small dog breed that brings joy to all those around them.

Getty Images Filip Micovic

August babies may have met their caine counterparts in a dog that’s equal parts cute and impossible to ignore. So, what’s their ideal companion? A Beagle!

“Beagles are very gentle, which is what Virgos are known for,” Stardust says. “They’re also perfect because they’re vocal hounds, which is part of Leo’s vibe.”

These friendly small dogs are also loved for their patient and easygoing nature, which can complement both signs as well. According to Stardust, their chill demeanor may even help balance Leo’s bigger-than-life energy, while their gentle personality makes them a natural fit for Virgo.

September: Havanese Havanese dogs value companionship, like people with September birthdays.

Getty Images Hans Surfer

If you never want to be too far from your four-legged best friend, the Havanese could be your September soulmate.

Because this breed is considered a “Velcro dog,” the Havanese taps into Libra’s desire for partnerships. “The Havanese require a lot of attention, which is good for both Libras and Virgos,” she says.

Their affectionate, people-oriented personality also makes them a great match for anyone looking for a loyal small dog that loves being by their side.

October: Pomeranian This small dog breed has Libra and Scorpio personality traits.

Getty Images zazznobe

Don’t let the Pomeranian’s tiny size fool you, this miniature dog has the personality to match an October-born individual’s big energy.

October hosts Libra and Scorpio, making the Pomeranian a fun match for people born this month. “The Pomeranian is very attentive, but they also like to do their own thing,” Stardust says. “They’re friendly, smart, and sensitive, which vibes well with Scorpio. But they like to be playful, which is good for Libra.”

That mix of independence, intelligence and playfulness makes the Pomeranian an amazing lapdog for someone who wants a pet with plenty of personality.

November: French Bulldog Frenchies are a small dog breed with lots of confidence, like November-born people.

Getty Images Michael Camilleri

November animal lovers may need a dog that’s just as confident and strong-willed as they are—and the French Bulldog fits the bill, according to Stardust. In fact, Scorpio and Sagittarius both make an appearance in this birth month and a Frenchie’s bold personality will mesh with them equally.

“Like French Bulldogs, Sagittarians aren’t afraid to assert their views,” she shares, adding that Scorpios are also passionate and driven, just like these pups.

With their playful, affectionate nature and big personalities, it’s no wonder French Bulldogs can be an especially fun pet for someone who wants a small dog that’s devoted, but not afraid to show some attitude and sass.

December: Miniature Pinscher A Miniature Pinscher is protective, like December birth months.

Getty Images Anita Kot

Sagittarius and Capricorn both show up in December, which means they have a bold spirit and a protective heart. So when it comes to the best pet for them, December dog parents may find their four-legged soulmate in the Miniature Pinscher, a small dog with a mighty personality.

“Pinschers are powerful and they love to guard things,” Stardust says. “That’s good for Sagittarius, because they are the guardians of the universe. Capricorns are also protective of those they care about, making them a good fit.”

Amazon Parrot ‘Singing in the Rain’ Is the Feathered Gene Kelly We Never Knew We Needed

10 hours 17 min ago

There’s something special about a summer rainstorm that can transport you right back to childhood. Splashing through puddles, getting completely soaked, and not having a care in the world are the kinds of simple memories that can make you wish you were a kid again.

For Nico, a Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot, a Florida rainstorm is apparently an opportunity to experience that same kind of joy. This beautiful bird is soaking up every drop, and when Mom asks if he’s finally ready to head inside, he has plenty to say about it.

Watch Nico “singing in the rain” in this August 1 TikTok from @nicobelizeparrot:

@nicobelizeparrot

Nico enjoys the rain, and I keep asking him if we can go inside yet. (lol) What do you all think his answer to that question was? #florida #rain #parrot #birdsoftiktok #wholesome

Animals have a wonderful way of reminding us to appreciate life’s simplest moments, and Nico certainly knows how to make the most of a summer rainstorm.

As the rain falls, he happily flaps his feathers, gives himself a little preen, and chatters away. When Mom asks if he’s ready to go inside, Nico makes his feelings known. He is clearly having far too much fun for that.

Related: 4 Parrots on a Road Trip Have Parents Wondering Who’s Asking, ‘Are We There Yet?’

And that chatter isn’t just random noise. Amazon Parrots are known for being highly vocal birds with impressive abilities to mimic human speech and other sounds. According to Kaytee, these intelligent parrots are also known for their playful personalities and can develop extensive vocabularies, which makes Nico’s enthusiastic rainy-day conversation even more fitting. In the wild, Amazon Parrots live in large flocks, and Kaytee notes that this social nature carries over into life as a pet, making them a bird that thrives on interaction, whether it’s chattering back at a curious fan online or, apparently, negotiating to stay out in the rain a little longer.

Nico charmed his fans, too.

“He is so happy. His colors are STUNNING,” Lindsey noted.

“Is he saying good boy lol?” @heyyystef asked. Nico’s mom confirmed, “Yes! That’s one of the phrases he says!”

“He’s so excited. I love his giggles,” CareBear added.

Between his excited chatter, happy feather flapping, and complete refusal to let a little rain send him indoors, Nico seems to have summer figured out. Sometimes all you really need is a good rainstorm and permission to enjoy it.

13 hours 40 min ago

Moose, an absolutely smooshy Bernese Mountain Dog, is no stranger to going viral and getting attention on TikTok. But would Moose (or his human Jen) ever think that Moose could get attention for the simple act of falling asleep? Probably not!

But thanks to his goofy, floppy personality, that’s exactly what happened. Moose took the craziest nap in the yard, and it honestly looks so satisfying it is jealousy inducing.

It really did look like the best sleep ever and we wish we could have even just a smidge of it!

How to Care for a Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernies are dependable, goofy, loving dogs who make wonderful additions to any family. Despite their lovable personalities, they do require some specific points of care which it’s worth researching before adding one to your pack.

Some Tips for Caring for a Bernie:

  • Managing their thick, water-resistant, double-coat is key and requires brushing and regular grooming.
  • As a larger breed, they have specific diets to consider and will need working, large breed food.
  • Bernies need daily exericse to maintain their physique, but also their mental wellness.
  • They can have sensitive stomach, which is worth watching out for.
  • Some can be prone to hip dysplasia so make sure to watch that with your vet.
  • They can overheat, so keeping an eye on their temperature especially during the summer is necessary.

Provided you’re being responsible and an attentive pet owner, owning a Bernie should be a snap! And you’ll have a built-in nap buddy, which is a win-win and extra comfy-cozy.

Squishy, short, and stout, there are few things on Earth more delectable than a baby Bulldog puppy. And better than that? When they’re fully locked in on being their person’s partner in crime.

Stubby, a Bulldog on TikTok with almost half a million followers, has a human who loves sharing throwbacks of him to social media. They recently shared a video of baby Stubs, who was an absolute fiend for snacks as a little one.

Known for their adorable wrinkles and short, stocky builds, Bulldogs are super eye-catching and adorable dogs to add to your family pack. Gentle, friendly, and laid back, Bulldog puppies are super adaptable and are perfect for families looking for an easygoing dog to add to their family.

Like all puppies, Bulldog pups will have bursts of energy and want playtime, but often they are very much couch potatoes. They love snuggles, chilling with their people, and good, long naps after being up and at ’em.

One thing to note is that Bulldogs can absolutely have a stubborn streak. This can make training a puppy a bit more difficult, so it’s worth considering.

All in all, Bulldog puppies are rolly, wrinkly bundles of love with distinct personalities to boot. If you’re up for it, they’ll absolutely make the best buddies for a long life journey. Just make sure to always have ample snacks on hand.

Dachshund Has Taken on a Full-Time Job Stealing the Baby's Stuff, and It's Comedy Gold

Wed, 08/19/2026 - 6:55pm

It can be a transition for any child when a new sibling joins the family, and that rule applies to our canine and feline children, as well.

There are a lot of emotions at play, and like children, animals can have a range of reactions when it comes to this new addition.

For this cute Dachshund, when the new baby came home, his reaction was to steal all of their stuff, and viewers are eating it up in this comedic dog video.

@madsdavis_

Working overtime with full benefits and a 401k #dachshundsoftiktok #dogandbaby #dogmom #babytok

♬ 9 to 5 – Dolly Parton

Honestly, it’s impressive how much he was able to steal!

There were a slew of fun comments on this Dachshund video, including some people who find this issue very relatable.

“It’s not stealing if he sees it as his property!!!” one person wrote.

“Oh boy, he is so busy!” one commenter said.

“Mine chews the limbs and ears off everything my son gets,” another said.

Why Do Dachshunds Like To Steal Things?

As the mother of a (human) newborn and a 2-year-old (Yorkiepoo), I can say that a dog stealing baby toys is quite common.

Plus, you can’t really blame the dog, as a lot of baby toys look like dog toys and are on the floor.

But this little Dachshund was stealing baby play gyms, what looks like the Momcozy Baby Lounger (which is a Godsend for newborn moms), and baby swaddles, in addition to toys.

So why do Dachshunds like to steal things?

First of all, dogs are curious, especially about new things, and they love to chew on things, so it makes sense they would go for a lot of these.

They also want your attention, especially now that something else cute is stealing it.

You may notice that a pup will steal an item right in front of you and make sure that you see them, but places themselves far enough away from you so they can’t be caught.

This is because the dog loves the thrill of the chase. They want to interact with you, so they steal in front of you.

To deal with this issue, make sure your pup has plenty of their own toys and keep precious items out of reach.

Redirect them to one of their toys when they try to steal a baby toy.

Aldi's Adorable $15 Pumpkin Pet Bed Is the Fall Treat Your Pet Doesn't Know They Need Yet

Wed, 08/19/2026 - 11:48am

There are two kinds of people when August arrives: those who think it is far too early to talk about fall, and those already planning their pumpkin displays.

Heart to Tail Novelty Pet Bed, Pumpkin, $14.99 at Aldi

Aldi

Thanks to the Heart to Tail Novelty Pet Bed, pumpkins aren’t just for decorating your porch this fall. At $14.99, the bed is part of Aldi’s rotating pet collection and is perfect for anyone who loves their home decor to include a touch of personality. (In addition to the pumpkin bed, the lineup also includes pet beds in the shape of an acorn, a toadstool, and a tree trunk.)

The arched entrance and plush interior pillow give it a den-like feel, and the anti-slip base means it stays put whether your floors are hardwood, tile, or carpet.

Measuring approximately 22 inches tall, 16 inches long and 14 inches wide, most small dog breeds and cats can cozy up comfortably in the bed.

Related: This $5 Basket From Aldi Is the Dog Toy Storage Solution Pet Parents Didn’t Know They Needed

Why Enclosed Beds Work

Cats, in particular, are instinctively drawn to contained sleeping spaces. The pumpkin’s curved walls rise around the pet, and a single opening keeps the interior warm, the same principle behind cave beds and igloo designs that consistently work well for cats.

Small dogs, especially breeds that tend to burrow, will respond in the same way. If your pet already loves seeking out corners and space under the couch, this bed will play to that instinct.

At $14.99, it’s cheaper than many fall decorations. Aldi’s seasonal items are often limited-run finds, so if you wait too long, you’ll miss your chance to snag one

While your pet probably doesn’t know it’s pumpkin season, they do love a soft place to sleep.
