Amazon’s 'Beautiful' Boneless Cloud Couch Is 'Perfect for Cuddling,' and It’s 57% Off Ahead of Memorial Day

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 11:30pm

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Creating a cozy, inviting living room doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune on bulky furniture.  that offers plenty of seating while still fitting into smaller spaces is one of the best ways to refresh your home

The boneless couch trend has taken over living room refreshes for good reason. These ultra-plush, foam-filled couches are perfect for smaller spaces, offering a luxe look without the bulk of traditional furniture. If you're looking for a softer-than-anything sofa you can sink into and relax for hours on end, Amazon has an incredible early Memorial Day deal on a sectional cloud couch for a whopping 57% off.

Normally $300, Flyida 95-Inch Boneless Cloud Sectional Couch is just $130 for a limited time. You can snag it in either left or right facing L-shaped styles in olive green, gray, brown, and black, though select versions are priced slightly higher. For larger spaces, this sectional is also available in 108-inch and 110-inch styles starting at $180. This couch has also earned an Amazon’s Choice designation as a highly-rated, well-priced product that’s available to ship immediately.

This 95-inch-long sectional delivers serious comfort and style at an incredibly approachable price. It fits in smaller spaces, but the design has a roomy 21-inch seat depth with a 45-inch-long chaise lounge on either the left or right side, and a 300-pound weight capacity per seat. The L-shaped sectional's two modular pieces can be arranged in multiple configurations, depending on your preference.

The “boneless” design means it’s filled with plush, high-density foam that creates a sink-in cloud-like feel, without the need for more structure. The couch's ribbed chenille fabric is soft yet durable and easy to clean, with generous back and seat cushions that provide excellent support without feeling too firm. Because this sectional sits directly on the ground, shoppers noted that it’s harder for items to slide underneath it and get lost.

Setup is incredibly convenient with zero assembly required — simply unpackage each cushion and watch them spring to life. The manufacturer recommends allowing up to 72 hours for the couch to fully decompress, but one shopper said that "it plumped up right out of the box."

A shopper who said they were doubtful that this sectional would be spacious enough confirmed that it comfortably accommodated a 6-foot-tall man. "It's the perfect couch for a one-bedroom apartment," they added. Another person shared that it's "great" for small and medium-sized spaces.

This Daytime Emmy-Winning Soap Writer Just Debunked a Major ‘Untrue’ Rumor

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 11:23pm

Former Days of Our Lives headwriter Ron Carlivati has taken to social media to clear up an ongoing rumor about his involvement in the series since his departure in July of 2024.

The drama began on social media when podcaster Alan Sarapa of The Chat posted on X, “I think having the DiMeras as the central family is a mistake,” referencing the soap opera's recent move to make the DiMeras a more central focus of the storyline.

Sarapa theorized that the move didn’t come directly from the head writers, but rather from someone higher up in production.

As the conversation continued, one user, Tia, challenged the double standard they had seen on social media regarding the treatment former headwriter Carlivati received compared with how she perceived fans had treated the current regime. “At what point can these new writers get blamed for anything?” she pondered.

Sarapa responded, admitting that he does feel like the show is low energy because of its current writers, but challenged, “You are neglecting to mention that Paula and Jeanne had to use Ron's outline for months.”

Carlivati saw the exchange and took to the replies to clear the air. “One hundred percent untrue,” the Daytime Emmy Award-winning writer stated.

He would go on to share, “It was not my long story at all starting the day after I left.”

Fans had previously taken a statement from head writers Paula Cwikly and Jeanne Marie Ford, which they gave to TV Insider’s Stephanie Sloan, to mean that the early portion of the writers' work was based on the former scribes' “outline.”

Back in August of last year, the writers told TV Insider, “Because all stories build on characters’ history, we are always working with threads from past regimes.”

They then clarified that “The stories airing this fall are primarily new tales,” leading viewers to believe that the two were finishing Carlivati’s vision as he intended it, but, according to Carlivati, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

One thing viewers had pointed to as a reason for believing the “outline” had continued was the return of Gwen Rizczech (Emily O'Brien) and Dimitri Von Leuschner (Peter Porte), as O’Brien shared that the plan for Gwen’s return had been in place for some time.

“We pitched Gwen and Dimitri’s return in a general sense,” Carlivati shared, “but I was told the story played out differently.”

Following his time on Days of Our Lives, Carlivati worked on the first season of Beyond the Gates as a breakdown writer before exiting ahead of production on Season 2.

Carlivati hinted at a new project during his interview with the SOAPY podcast, where he mentioned Parade’s previous coverage of his ski trip.

“I do have a little project that is soap-related," he teased. "I'm not at liberty to talk about right now, but I am writing something that's fun,” he shared.

Former Days of our Lives breakdown writer Jamey Giddens also revealed that he and Carlivati were working together on a recent episode of the Daytime Confidential podcast, where Giddens said, “And this is just a teaser because I cannot say more. We're working again. Stay tuned.”

Fans will have to wait and find out exactly what project Carlivati has been working on, but one thing appears certain: it was not the outline for Days of Our Lives following his departure from the series on July 19, 2024.

Days of Our Lives continues with new episodes weekdays, streaming exclusively on Peacock.

A Forgotten Glen Campbell TV Special Featured an Unexpected Music Icon

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 11:20pm

On May 20, 1976, Glen Campbell brought a little bit of Nashville to Australia when CBS aired the musical television special Glen Campbell… Down Home—Down Under.

The variety special paired Campbell with a lineup of Australian performers, but one guest appearance in particular stood out: Olivia Newton-John.

Years before nostalgia-driven TV specials became commonplace, the two stars teamed up for a warm, easygoing performance of "Happy Together" that showcased their natural chemistry and crossover appeal.

Many fans were shocked to learn of the duet, even years later.

"They are both great singers but I never knew she sang a song with Glenn Campbell," wrote a Facebook user.

"This is great!" another chimed in. "I’ve never seen it before, and their voices are wonderful together. But then, Olivia sang beautifully with anyone!"

"I’ve never seen this video before," a third added. "Very cool to still find new Olivia material."

At the time, both Campbell and Newton-John were major television and music stars with audiences that stretched far beyond country music.

Campbell was riding the massive success of hits like "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.)," while Newton-John had already become one of pop music’s brightest stars thanks to songs like "Let Me Be There" and "I Honestly Love You."

The special leaned heavily into its Australian setting. Campbell and Newton-John joined popular Aussie pop group Sherbet for a spirited performance of "Let Me Be There." Campbell also shared the stage with Australian duo Bill & Boyd for a medley of "Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.)" and "Rhinestone Cowboy."

The special is rarely discussed today, but it remains a fascinating snapshot of 1970s television, when variety specials regularly brought together major stars from different corners of the music world.

Campbell passed away on Aug 8, 2017, at the age of 81. A few years later, in 2022, Newton-John died on August 8 at the age of 73.

1977 Rock Classic, Written in Response to an Unwelcome Remark, Turns 49

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 11:13pm

49 years ago today, on May 20, 1977, Heart released their defiant rock anthem “Barracuda.” The song appearing on the band’s second album, Little Queen, was written by Heart sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, alongside then lead guitar player Roger Fisher and bassist Michael Derosier

Easily recognized by its opening guitar riff, which drives the rock melody, “Barracuda” showcases Ann’s powerful vocals as she serves up ferocious lyrics that were written in response to a “sleazy” comment from a music business executive. “Barracuda” cleverly uses the predatory fish as a metaphor to represent the person’s exploitative nature.

In an interview, Heart guitarist Nancy shared the story behind the song, telling American Songwriter that the man had directed his attention to Ann, pointing out one of Heart’s album covers, which featured her and Nancy together. At the time, the man was trying to insinuate that Nancy and Ann were intimately involved.

“There was this one sleazy guy at a record company or promoter — I can’t even remember where from, exactly. You know that type; there’s a lot of those kinds of guys in this business,” Nancy said. “And he was like,  because of our album cover where we had bare shoulders touching … “So, Ann, how’s your lover?” And she goes, “Oh, yeah, Mike’s great!” And he goes, “No, no, I mean your sister, haha!” So, the insinuation that we were lovers was, of course, not anywhere near true and was really sleazy and inappropriate."

“We were just young enough, just idealistic enough to take it pretty badly and have a lot of anger around it, insults around it. So Ann went and fired off those words, and we finished it maybe that night or the next day,” she added.

Although the male figure’s comment was unwelcome, Heart and the sisters of the band got the last laugh as their song went on to become a timeless anthem. Although the track didn’t reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (It peaked at No. 11),  in 2025, “Barracuda” was voted as the “Greatest Song Sung by Female Rockers,” per Ranker

“That song started out as a personal revenge-type of song,” Nancy acknowledged. “But the longer it was out in the world and the longer we played it, it became more universal because there are so many damn barracudas out there everywhere.”

Mindy Kaling Finally Addressed the 20 Year Speculation on Her 'Situationship'

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 11:05pm

Anyone who's loved The Office, The Mindy Project, or even just a good "will they or won't they" has probably wondered about the dynamic between Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak. But after two decades of being extremely tight-lipped about the status between the two of them, Kaling sat down for an interview with Bustleto officially put the matter of what is or isn't going on to bed.

Kaling reiterated that she is absolutely, unequivocally single, saying: “Right now, there is not anyone out there. It is crazy for someone like me, who only wrote about the pursuit of romance for so much of my life, to be very happy and content without a partner.” She does get how it's understandable people would be curious about her relationship with Novak though acknowledging, “If I was just watching it from the outside, I would have the same questions and the same reactions.”

The duo met while working on NBC's The Office and dated on and off from 2004 to 2007. They've been intertwined and borderline inseparable since, causing fans to speculate whether or not they're together privately. Even noted in the interview with Bustle, Kaling keeps a bedazzled frame with the words “Never Complain, Never Explain” embroidered on fabric on her desk, which was a gift from Novak.

One of the toughest rumors that has swirled amongst them is that of Kaling's three children. While Kaling has never disclosed the paternity of any of her kids, people have speculated that Katherine, Spencer, and Anne are all children she shares with Novak. Kaling has been clear over the years that she will talk about her children's father and the details about her road to motherhood if and only if her kids are old enough to understand things first. However she did say of Novak (who is godfather to all three) and her little ones, “He really is in our family, and I love talking about him because my kids adore him, and he’s such a huge part of our life."

Ten years ago Kaling described her situationship with Novak as "weird as hell." And to some, it may still seem that way. But it's refreshing to see a star like Kaling be so confident in her boundaries and living her authentic life, even if it only makes sense to her.

As if graduation wasn't exciting enough, Krispy Kreme is rewarding the Class of 2026 with free doughnuts.

With commencement season in full force, the doughnut chain is ready to celebrate all the hard work and effort with a sweet treat on the house—well, actually three.

"You did the work, passed the tests, and made the memories – now it’s time for a little treat,” Alison Holder, chief brand and product officer at Krispy Kreme, teased about the upcoming promotion. "Class of 2026, this is your sweet reward. You earned every bite."

How to Score Free Krispy Kreme Just for Graduating

According to the release, graduates looking to enjoy a free three-pack of original glazed doughnuts must arrive wearing Class of 2026 gear or graduation regalia, such as a cap, gown, tee, medals, you get the idea.

Alaska Airlines Debuts 1st-Ever Transatlantic 737 MAX Flight to the Land of Geothermal Lagoons and Northern Lights

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 10:50pm

Alaska Airlines is continuing its European expansion with the launch of its first-ever transatlantic Boeing 737 MAX flight, opening new nonstop service between Seattle and Reykjavík beginning May 28, 2026.

The new route marks the airline's third European destination following launches to Rome and London, but it is the first time Alaska will send a Boeing 737 MAX across the Atlantic.

Related: Alaska Airlines Set to Make History With Its First-Ever Flight to Europe

In a press release announcing the route, Alaska Airlines leaned heavily into Iceland's bucket-list appeal, describing the destination as a place of "breathtaking landscapes" filled with volcanoes, waterfalls, geothermal lagoons, and, of course, the Northern Lights. The airline said the new service allows travelers to reach the "Land of Fire and Ice" with daily summer flights from Seattle, which Alaska now refers to as its "global gateway."

The new route also signals Alaska's growing international ambitions following its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines and expansion into long-haul flying. While Alaska has historically focused on domestic and West Coast operations, the carrier has increasingly added overseas destinations to compete with larger global airlines.

"The addition of Reykjavík expands Alaska's global footprint, connecting our guests with even more of the world through the elevated service they know and love," Kirsten Amrine, Vice President of Revenue Management and Network Planning, said in the press release. "We're excited to [bring] travelers closer to the natural magic of Iceland and [provide] a seamless gateway to Europe."

According to the airline, passengers flying to Iceland can expect upgraded onboard amenities across Alaska's Boeing 737 fleet. In the release, the company said travelers will receive "Alaska's signature hospitality" alongside complimentary Wi-Fi on flights to Reykjavík. The airline is also debuting "a refreshed First Class dining experience" and its "first-ever complimentary Premium Class Snack Basket" on longer routes.

Related: Norway Unveils the World's First Glass-Roofed Night Train for Panoramic Views of the Northern Lights

The Seattle-to-Reykjavík flight will operate on the Boeing 737 MAX 8, a narrow-body aircraft increasingly being used by airlines for longer transatlantic routes because of its fuel efficiency and extended range capabilities. Alaska's use of the aircraft is particularly notable given the intense scrutiny surrounding the MAX family in recent years.

In January 2024, Alaska Airlines temporarily grounded its fleet of 737 MAX 9 aircraft after a door plug blew out mid-flight on one of its planes departing Portland, Oregon. Federal investigators later said the incident was preventable and linked to manufacturing failures at Boeing.

Even so, airlines around the world continue expanding MAX operations, especially on thinner long-haul routes that do not require larger widebody aircraft.

For Alaska Airlines, Reykjavík represents both a tourism draw and a strategic next step in building a broader international network from Seattle.

Sometimes a small detail makes all the difference. The Clarks Breeze Opal Flip-Flops have the same cloud-soft cushioning and lightweight construction as the rest of the collection. However, it's the delicate flower detail at the toe strap that sets them apart — giving the sandals a softer, more feminine touch.

A grippy sole keeps you steady from boardwalks to slippery pool decks. A slight 30-millimeter heel lift adds a little extra height, but they still feel easy and comfortable to wear. Walmart shoppers love these sandals and described them as “comfortable,” “supportive,” and “stylish.” Sizes are available from 5 to 12.  You can choose from black, denim, sand, and white hues — four easy-to-wear neutrals that easily match with any outfit.

Why 'Beyond the Gates' Social Event of the Season Is More Than Just Drama for This CBS Showrunner

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 10:31pm

Beyond the Gates is taking its viewers on a long-honored tradition with a three-episode cotillion storyline. Now, executive producer Sheila Ducksworth has shared her perspective on why telling that story was so important, now more than ever.

Ducksworth spoke with BET’s Danielle Young about the series and her plans to create a machine that will run as long as its predecessors.

During the conversation, the showrunner discussed the cotillion storyline. Throughout the storyline, viewers learned that the Barrington County Cotillion is a long-standing tradition for the Dupree family and will be held this year at the Fairmont Crest Country Club.

Three generations of Dupree family members have been a part of the cotillion in the past: Nicole Richardson Dupree (Daphnée Duplaix), Martin Richardson (Brandon Claybon), Kat (Colby Nixon), Naomi (Arielle Prepetit), and now Samantha (Najah Jackson) and Tyrell (Jaden Lucas Miller).

This year, 9 young debs with 9 young escorts are presented, as Samantha and her rival, Francesca “Chessy” Belleclaire (Madison Alsobrook), vie for the title of Platinum Debutante.

Reflecting on the storyline, Ducksworth shared, “It really is important, as I said, that this show speaks with authenticity.”

Ducksworth added that the soap, being a work of fiction, shouldn’t prevent it from bringing realism and tradition to its storytelling. “Why not actually put a spotlight on and support the things that are really true and authentic to this culture?” she challenged.

Since Beyond the Gates was originally announced, Ducksworth has spoken about the series' importance and the role it plays in television history, as the first new daytime drama to enter production in over 20 years and the first hour-long drama to feature a predominantly Black cast. The show runner has jokingly shared she hopes Beyond the Gates last for over 100 years, and is building the groundwork for the production to last for years to come.

Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS with episodes streaming weeknights on Paramount+.

Viewers can catch up on all of the drama from Fairmount Crest from the beginning of the series on Paramount+ or for free on Pluto TV’s dedicated 24/7 Beyond the Gates FAST  channel.

Nicole Brown Simpson's Sister Shares Heartbreaking Message on What Would've Been Her 67th Birthday

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 10:14pm

Nicole Brown Simpson would have been turning 67 this year, and her sisters are commemorating the occasion with heartbreaking tributes in her memory.

It's been almost 32 years since Nicole, the ex-wife of late NFL star O.J. Simpson, was brutally murdered. Just weeks after turning 35, Nicole was stabbed to death outside her California home on June 12, 1994, along with her friend, Ron Goldman, age 25.

On May 19, 2026, Nicole would have marked her 67th birthday had it not been for her untimely death. While much of the public remembers the tragic end of Nicole's life and the famous murder trial that followed, her sisters still remember — and celebrate — the person Nicole was when she was alive.

On Tuesday, two of Nicole's three sisters, Denise and Tanya, both took to social media to send heartfelt messages about their late sister and wish her a "happy heavenly birthday."

"I miss you so very much 💔❤️" Denise's Instagram post read, while Tanya shared a similar poignant message in Nicole's honor.

"Happy Heavenly Birthday to the sister that was robbed from me," Tanya wrote in her post, "I know in my heart of hearts we were more alike; sadly, you were taken away from us all too soon. I love you and miss you more with every passing day."

Tanya recently opened up about Nicole's upcoming 32nd anniversary of Nicole's death and the significant meaning it holds, as 32 was the jersey number worn by O.J. during his time in the NFL.

"I want this year to be special for her and abolish that number 32 forever," Tanya wrote via Instagram on April 20.

O.J. was charged with the murders of both Nicole and Goldman and famously stood trial in 1995, though he was acquitted of criminal charges. He was, however, found liable for the two deaths in a 1997 civil court case, and was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages.

He ended up spending nine years in jail for kidnapping and armed robbery, and was released on parole in 2017. He died of cancer in April 2024 at the age of 76.

Billy Joel Passionately Calls Out Unauthorized Biopic: 'Legally and Professionally Misguided'

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 9:52pm

Billy Joel's life was set to be documented in an upcoming biopic; however, the musician has spoken out against the project, making it clear that they do not have permission to include his music.

"Since 2021, the parties involved have been officially notified that they do not possess Billy Joel’s life rights and will not be able to secure the music rights required for this project," a representative for Joel shared in a statement to Variety. "Billy Joel has not authorized or supported this project in any capacity, and any attempt to move forward without it would be both legally and professionally misguided.”

The film, "Billy and Me," was going to chronicle Joel's life before fame and before his numerous hit songs. Specifically, it was going to take place before he released "Piano Man" in 1973, being told through the perspective of Irwin Mazur, Joel's first manager, who discovered him in 1966.

Variety reports that casting is already underway, with filming set to begin in the fall in Winnipeg, Canada, and New York. The outlet further reports that the "production has secured Mazur’s exclusive life rights, as well as those of Joel’s longtime friend, drummer and video director Jon Small, who is also on board as a consultant, co-executive producer and second unit director."

John Ottman is directing the film, having previously served as the lead editor on the "Michael" biopic, which dominated the box office. Filmmaker Adam Ripp is set to write the script.

“I’m really proud of the development work Adam Ripp and I did to shape ‘Billy & Me’ into both a deeply emotional and fun story. This is the formative years of Billy and his relationship with Irwin Mazur, the man who recognized Billy’s amazing talent even before Billy did himself. Sure, the long hair, cigarette smoke and authentic look of the period turns me on as a filmmaker, but what truly drew me to the material was the humanity at its core.” Ottman said, according to Variety. “It’s funny, heartbreaking, and ultimately very inspiring.”

’50s Bombshell’s Sultry Performance for a U.S President Remains Unforgettable 64 Years Later

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 9:51pm

In 1962, a Hollywood legend delivered an iconic performance so unforgettable it instantly became part of American pop culture history.

Sixty-four years ago today, Marilyn Monroe stole the spotlight at Madison Square Garden in New York City to perform for then U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s birthday.

Serving as a massive Democratic Party fundraising gala, the event was filled with notable politicians and influential people, but they were all in awe of the actress’ sultry rendition of the “Happy Birthday” song, making it one of the most iconic and at the same time, controversial performances ever given for a president.

Notorious for her tardiness at events, Monroe arrived in New York behind schedule and was jokingly introduced by the master of ceremonies and JFK’s brother-in-law, Peter Lawford, as "the late Marilyn Monroe.”

The actress stepped on stage looking like a goddess in her infamous gown.

Designed by French costume designer Jean Louis based on a sketch by then-21-year-old Bob Mackie, all eyes were on Monroe’s flesh-colored sheer gown, which created a striking nude illusion beneath the sparkling stage lights.

Now considered one of the most iconic dresses in pop culture, the custom-made outfit featured delicate marquisette gauze fabric and was encrusted with 2,500 hand-sewn shimmering rhinestones.

The Some Like It Hot star hit the stage despite running a high fever from a sinus infection, perfectly delivering a stunning performance as she sang the “Happy Birthday” song in a sultry voice.

“Happy birthday, Mr. President.

Happy birthday to you,” she sang, followed by a custom lyric to the tune of "Thanks for the Memory.”

“Thanks, Mr. President,

For all the things you’ve done,

The battles that you’ve won

The way you deal with U.S. Steel

And our problems by the ton

We thank you so much.

Everybody, happy birthday.”

Following the performance, JFK took the stage and thanked all the celebrities who performed, from Maria Callas, Ella Fitzgerald, Jack Benny, Peggy Lee and of course, the The Seven Year Itch star.

“I can now retire from politics after having had ‘Happy Birthday’ sung to me in such a sweet, wholesome way,” the late president joked.

In a book written by journalist Richard Meryman, which details the actress’ four-hour interview with LIFE magazine recorded just weeks before her passing in 1962, Monroe talked about her iconic performance at JFK’s birthday celebration.

"There was a hush that came over the place," the Hollywood icon told Meryman, as cited by People. "I didn’t think anything was going to come out. When I got to the microphone, I just took one breath and suddenly, I thought, here goes!”

Just months after the infamous performance, Monroe passed away on August 4, 1962, at the age of 36.

Robert Downey Jr. And MCU Co-Star Reunite With a Sweet Kiss

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 9:51pm

At a philanthropic arts event in New York City last night, two of Marvel’s favorite stars reunited with a sweet kiss that the internet can't get enough of.

The Lincoln Center Theater Annual Spring Gala honored Robert Downey Jr. and his wife, Susan Downey, who “were all smiles,” according to Us Weekly. But it was a fun moment between Downey and Paul Bettany that has fans losing their minds.

Downey, known for his role as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Bettany, who plays Vision, were spotted by John Pascarella in an embrace. Downey planted a kiss on Bettany’s cheek, and Bettany gave one in return before the stars hugged once more.

“It’s all love between Iron Man and Vision,” Entertainment Tonight posted on Instagram along with the video from Pascarella.

Marvel fans quickly flocked to the comment section, expressing their excitement over the two stars reuniting.

“they’ve been through it all since the very beginning,” one fan commented, referring to Bettany’s original MCU role as JARVIS.

"That’s how much love Robert Downey Jr has for his cast members," one user said.

“Love seeing these two together again,” another commented on a post from E! News. “Such an iconic duo!”

Downey and Bettany recently presented at Disney Upfronts, a showcase of sports and entertainment. The two were joined by Tom Hiddleston (Loki in the MCU), teasing what’s next for the franchise. A trailer debuted during the presentation, showing Bettany’s return as Vision in the MCU’s upcoming TV show, VisionQuest.

“[VisionQuest] manages to feel very much like it’s somehow a part of that world, an end to a trilogy of sorts, whilst also being very much its own thing, and it is just really good,” Bettany said in an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I’m really proud of it.”

VisionQuest is set to release on Oct. 14.

1970 Rock Classic Forced to Change One Word for Radio Became One of the Decade’s Biggest Hits

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 9:49pm

The Kinks' 1970 hit "Lola" may not have become the iconic song that it did if not for one minor lyric change.

Lead vocalist Ray Davies claimed in his autobiography that he was aiming to write something that would "sell in the first five seconds."

So when BBC informed the band that they would not be airing "Lola," Davies reportedly flew across the globe to re-record the song.

"I met her in a club down in old Soho / Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola / C-O-L-A, Cola," the original lyrics read.

However, due to the BBC Radio's "no product placement" policy, Davies changed the line to "tastes just like cherry cola."

The band was on tour at the time, and, according to UCR, Davies flew to London after a gig in Minnesota for the re-record. However, the new recording was not up to par, and he was forced to do another round-trip flight to London shortly after.

"Lola" went on to become a massive hit, reaching No. 1 in Netherlands, Ireland and New Zealand. It peaked at No. 2 in the UK, and topped out at No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

1986 Cult Classic Inspired by The Doors Became One of the Most Intense Thrillers of All Time

Tue, 05/19/2026 - 9:43pm

Hitchhiking is a no-no from both ends of the transaction. We know this. But sometimes it takes a film so visceral and a villain so terrifying to keep us miles away from those wandering the highways with bad intentions.

Released in February 1986, The Hitcher stars C. Thomas Howell (The Outsiders) as Jim Halsey, a kid driving cross-country, and Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner), the murderous drifter who frames Jim for the carnage he’s left in his wake. It’s an absolutely thrilling yet terrifying cat-and-mouse game that goes on for an hour and a half, and when you learn that its origins lie in a dark classic rock song by The Doors, it will all begin to make sense.

“The Doors’ ‘Riders on the Storm’ is prime movie-making material with its eerie and dramatic tone,” Ultimate Classic Rockwrote in 2024, sharing the original inspiration for director Robert Harmon’s film. “Screenwriter Eric Red recognized that and, in the early ’80s, took inspiration from the song to write The Hitcher.”

“Riders on the Storm,” which sets an ominous tone immediately with the sounds of a thunderstorm, was the second single off the band’s sixth and final studio album, L.A. Woman, released in April 1971. It was the last song frontman Jim Morrison recorded before his death in July that same year at age 27, Far Out shared. Though it didn't reach No. 1, it did make the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 14.

“The script was inspired by The Doors song ‘Riders on the Storm,’ which I felt was a great jumping off point for a thriller," Red said in an interview with the Horror Writers Association. UCR added that Red was inspired by the song while cruising through “the American badlands,” and wanted to replicate the foreboding sensation of a maniac preying on innocent drivers during a rainstorm.

The song, written by Morrison, is partly based on a real-life serial killer. According to Far Out, Morrison took inspiration from the 1950s killing spree committed by a hitchhiker named Billy Cook, who murdered the family of five that picked him up.

Though the film was a box-office disappointment, unable to clear its estimated $6 million budget, it found an audience over time and is now considered a cult classic. It’s even been documented as a favorite of auteurs like Christopher Nolan and Stephen King, while entertainment outlets like Collider consistently rank it in Top 10 cult classic roundups.

“Open road thrillers are a subgenre that exploits audiences’ inherent fears of isolation and vulnerability. Expert thrillers like Duel, RoadGames, and Breakdown all exploit those fears with visceral efficiency, but there’s no matching the intensity and apocalyptic terror of The Hitcher,” the outlet writes, calling the film one of “the most intense thrillers ever made.”

So, yeah, lock the doors, thank The Doors, and get lost in a really great watch.

The Hitcher is streaming on Cinemax.
