Keeping up with all of Taco Bell‘s menu changes is not easy, but it is rewarding—how else would you find out that it’s bringing back one of its “buzziest frozen treats” with not only a twist but another new dessert item?

Fans of the nostalgic Choco-Taco (which, for the record, was not invented by Taco Bell but by Alan Drazen and later distributed by Good Humor) got a taste of the memorable treat last year when the fast food chain teamed up with the artisanal ice cream brand Salt & Straw for its limited-run Tacolate.

The original Tacolate featured a taco shell made from hand-pressed, extra-crunchy waffle cones and a cinnamon-ancho chili ice cream filling, dipped in single-origin chocolate, then finished with a coating of crunchy, toasted brown rice. This year, though, the collaborators decided to go in a slightly sweeter direction and are expanding the menu items with more options at more locations and with fresh—might we say less controversial—flavors.

Taco Bell Doubles Down on Dessert With 2 New Salt & Straw Menu Items: Everything We Know About the New Releases

On Tuesday, Taco Bell revealed the addition of its all-new Salt & Straw Churro Ice Cream Taco and its companion dessert: the Salt & Straw Choco-Waffle Chiller.

“Last year’s collaboration showed us how much joy there is in reimagining a nostalgic
favorite, and we’re thrilled to work with Salt & Straw to bring a new ice cream taco to Taco
Bell restaurants,” Liz Matthews, Global Chief Food Innovation Officer at Taco Bell, explained in a statement.

“The Churro Ice Cream Taco builds on everything fans loved about the original collaboration,” Matthews promised, “with a flavor that feels right at home on our menu.”

• Salt & Straw Churro Ice Cream Taco ($3.99): A crispy waffle cone shell filled with brand-new Churro Ice Cream, covered with puffed rice and finished with a dark chocolate-flavored coating for a creamy, crispy and crunchy bite. 
• Salt & Straw Choco-Waffle Chiller ($4.69): This frozen remix blends a rich vanilla ice cream base with churro crumbles and waffle cone pieces, wrapped in a crackable chocolatey shell and topped with whipped cream and even more waffle cone pieces. 

According to a press release shared directly with Parade, the Salt & Straw Churro Ice Cream Taco will be available at Taco Bell locations nationwide (unlike the Tacolate, which was exclusive to select states) for a limited time starting today, September 1.

“We knew Tacolate was special, but the response completely blew us away—and our
guests made it clear they wanted it to stick around,” Tyler Malek, co-founder and head ice cream maker at Salt & Straw, added, noting the new Churro Ice Cream Taco takes it up a notch and “brings together what both brands do best.”

“We’re so excited for people across the country to finally get their hands on one,” Malek concluded.

Taco Bell’s Salt & Straw Choco-Waffle Chiller will also only be available for a limited time, exclusively at select Live Más Cafés in California, Las Vegas, Houston, and Dallas.

He continued, “I have lost count, but I believe I had the privilege of sitting down with her eight times, more than any other public person. She was always engaging and intelligent. She had a wicked sense of humor and made you feel like you were the only person in the world who mattered.”

Rather added, “But that didn’t mean she made it easy. You had to work to get her to open up.”

The last time he interviewed Parton was in 2014. Rather wrote, “She was classic Dolly: all smiles and light, peppered with wisdom and insight.”

The journalist concluded, “Dolly was so gifted at lifting people up; she and her music were featured as a Reason to Smile six times. I think that’s a record. It is heartbreaking that we are honoring her a seventh time.”

“Since we previously chose my favorite Dolly song, ‘I Will Always Love You’ (her version), for today’s Reason to Smile, we decided on a song with a theme many of us are feeling: ‘Just When I Needed You Most.’ You left us, Dolly, just when we needed you most. Rest in peac,e my friend. We will always love you.”

According to PEOPLE Magazine, Parton passed on Aug. 25 at age 80. In a statement to her representatives said she died after a “brief battle with cancer.”

“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand,” the statement began.

“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact. After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” the remarks concluded.

Overall, the feel of The Alfond Inn is warm and inviting. The moment I pulled my car into the valet lane, someone was there to welcome me and take my bags out of my trunk. It was just as friendly at the front desk, where check-in is a breeze. 

The property is fairly large, which can be deceiving from the lobby check-in area where the hotel feels more compact. There are multiple common spaces and gathering spots around The Alfond Inn’s first floor, including a cute cafe serving house-made pastries. I also love the outdoor courtyard, where guests enjoy the warm Florida sunshine in the morning and evening cocktails as the sun sets.

The Alfond Inn may have some of the cutest rooms in Orlando. Upon walking in, you’re greeted by butter yellow and teal pops of color. The standard room layout is also quite nice. I recently stayed in a king room, where the cozy bed had some of the softest hotel sheets I’ve ever slept on. There was also a large lounging couch and a desk. The closet held two hotel-branded robes, and the nearby coffee station was filled with everything you could need for a morning boost. The ensuite bathroom was also a nice size, with double sinks, a stand-up shower, and upscale amenities.

What Makes The Hotel Stand Out? The Alfond Inn is known for its art collection.

The 183-room property is filled with art from The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art. The museum-worthy collection features around 130 works displayed at any one time in the hotel’s common spaces and room corridors. And don’t worry if you’ve stayed here recently, because every so often, the pieces rotate so there’s always something new to see. In fact, during my stay in August, the hotel had just replaced many of the art pieces with new ones, so it was fun to take a self-guided tour of the displays. 

But if you don’t want to simply look at art, you can actually learn about the pieces too. Every first Wednesday of the month, guests can take an hour-long tour of the hotel’s art collection with a staff member from the nearby Rollins Museum of Art.

And speaking of Rollins, which is also the liberal arts college in Winter Park, The Alfond Inn has a unique setup with the school. All of the hotel’s net income goes directly to fund college scholarships, and it is the only hotel in the world with this structure. 

What Is The Spa Like? The spa is worth the splurge at The Alfond Inn.

One of the best amenities at The Alfond Inn is the spa. The entrance is on the first floor, which is also where you’ll find the men’s and women’s locker rooms. Both are a host of wellness amenities, including a steam room, sauna, heated loungers, an experience shower, and more. This is also where you’ll get a fluffy royal blue robe and a set of spa slippers to wear during your visit. The spa also features an outdoor private pool deck, where you can enjoy a dip in the heated waters and lunch delivered right to your pool chair. 

Then, when you’re ready for your treatment, you’ll head to the elevator to the second floor, where a relaxation room stocked with tea, water, and snacks is available. This is also where the massage and facial practitioners will pick you up. I enjoyed the 50-minute Eminence Signature Customized Facial, which was a serene face massage and nourishing skin treatments. 

You really can spend a whole day at the spa and never have to leave, which I’ve definitely done before.

What’s In The Area Around The Alfond Inn?

Winter Park is a charming neighborhood, known for its walkability, beautiful homes, delightful shopping and dining, and more. A few of my favorite spots are The Chapman for brunch (the steak and eggs rancheros is a perfect late-morning meal), Buttermilk Bakery for sweet treats, and AVA Mediterraegean for dinner. I also never leave Winter Park without stopping at Rifle Paper Co. to restock on paper goods and small gifts.

Between shopping and dining, there are a few must-do activities in Winter Park. I love the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour, which shares the area’s history and great views of some of the beautiful homes along the chain of lakes. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art is also a nice way to spend an afternoon. The museum is home to the largest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany pieces like glass lamps, a chapel interior, and paintings.

In 1975, Fleetwood Mac introduced the world to a new lineup with its self-titled “White” album. Featuring newcomers Lindsey Buckingham on guitar and Stevie Nicks on vocals, the album became a classic, with hit singles such as “Over My Head” and “Rhiannon.”

Yet one of the most enduring songs wasn’t a single at all: Buckingham’s haunting track “I’m So Afraid.”

Written by Buckingham over four years, the song was originally meant for a second album with the guitarist’s then-girlfriend Nicks.

Built around lyrics about anxiety and isolation, “I’m So Afraid” culminates with a cathartic explosion of guitar that becomes one of  Buckingham’s most powerful performances.

Live performances of this song go even further. Buckingham has extended the fiery solo into guitar hero territory, most notably during the epic 1997 concert The Dance, which featured a sprawling solo lasting nearly four minutes.

But Buckingham didn’t stop there. A 2008 concert review by Billboard noted that “I’m So Afraid” had become “Buckingham’s ‘Cortez the Killer’: an ominous, exquisitely slow-paced workout that built into a mind-bending and rapturous extended solo.”

“It left Buckingham literally gasping for breath and the crowd ecstatic on its feet,” the outlet shared.

In his book Play On: Now, Then and Fleetwood Mac, band leader Mick Fleetwood revealed that Buckingham spent a lot of time perfecting the song.

“’I’m So Afraid’ was a track that Lindsey had been laboring over for four years; he’d got the harmony of the guitar parts so in tune they were a virtual orchestra unto themselves,” Fleetwood wrote.

Buckingham also explained what “I’m So Afraid” meant to him.

“It was an exploration into two things,” he once told Entertainment Weekly. “One, into the use of a guitar as a very orchestral thing with a triad of melody going on. And then, the unleashing of the solo at the end, which grew into epic proportions over the years on stage…. It also addressed the yin-yang of having confidence and having faith that you have something to offer in a somewhat tenuous environment that is the entertainment industry, And yet, there’s always a fear underneath that.”

Decades later, “I’m So Afraid” is still a Buckingham staple. In a 2021 interview, the Fleetwood Mac guitarist was asked about the most difficult song to play live, and he named “I’m So Afraid.”’

“It’s not that it’s difficult,” he clarified. “But it’s very taxing on a nightly basis because it’s got this very long solo that I have to do every night.”

That same year, Buckingham told Forbes magazine that he realizes he has to play “I’m So Afraid” at every live show for the rest of his life.

“I sort of have to,” the rock legend said. “But that’s fine. …You make peace that there are certain things that are appropriate for you to do. And again the validity comes from looking out in the audience… At that point you kind of say, ‘Well, I guess, we did something right.’ And so that’s how you deal with that.”

More than 50 years after it was recorded, “I’m So Afraid” remains Buckingham’s greatest guitar showcase, a timeless display of his ability to turn vulnerability and emotion into a blistering rock performance— every single time.

It started with an organ riff that sounded unlike anything else on the radio.

Question Mark and the Mysterians released “96 Tears” in 1966, turning a song developed by a group of Michigan teenagers into a national sensation. On Oct. 29, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the band its first and only chart-topper.

The Mysterians originally formed as an instrumental group in Saginaw, Michigan. Founding guitarist Bobby Balderrama started playing with his cousin Larry Borjas and drummer Robert Martinez before the group added keyboardist Frank Rodriguez. Rudy Martinez, better known as Question Mark, later joined as its lead singer.

“One day, Frank started playing a little organ riff, and we really liked it a lot,” Balderrama told Vice. “I kinda came up with the chord riff, and every time we practiced, we recorded everything.”

That jam took place in the Rodriguez family’s basement, where Rodriguez’s organ part met Balderrama’s power chords. Question Mark then added lyrics he said were based on an earlier idea called “Too Many Teardrops.”

Despite claims that the finished record was also made in a basement or living room, the band recorded it at the Schiell Recording Studio in Bay City. Engineer Art Schiell operated the professional space from a converted patio at the back of his home, complete with microphones, a drum partition and a separate control room.

The single was initially released through the small Pa-Go-Go label. The young musicians personally delivered copies to record stores and radio stations around Michigan, where growing requests pushed it from Saginaw to Flint and Detroit. Cameo-Parkway eventually acquired the record for national distribution.

Rodriguez’s instantly recognizable organ riff and Question Mark’s defiant delivery helped “96 Tears” stand apart. Although the band placed several more singles on the charts and released two albums, none approached the song’s success.

Sixty years later, it remains at the center of the group’s legacy. Original members returned to Bay City in July 2026 for a free anniversary concert, bringing the song back to the Michigan community where it began.

When Tony Orlando and Dawn sent “He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You)” to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1975, it marked a peak of mid-’70s pop-soul charm.

Decades later, the song is quietly experiencing a digital resurgence. It’s finding a brand-new audience of modern listeners who are enjoying the song’s bittersweet romantic warning.

According to a ranking by Last.fm, the song remains a popular listener streaming choice. It ranks No. 4 out of a list of 20 of Orlando’s greatest hits, including “Knock Three Times,” “Candida,” and “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.”

But while generations of fans grew up humming the No. 1 song, few realize the chart-topping sensation was also a Top 10 hit 15 years earlier. Long before it became a 1970s radio staple, the track originated in 1960 as a landmark soul classic recorded under a totally different title by R&B icon Jerry Butler.

In 1960, Butler recorded the tune as “He Will Break Your Heart,” according to Songfacts. Butler, Curtis Mayfield, and Calvin Carter were its writers. The original reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent seven weeks at #1 on the R&B charts.

Ironically, the idea to remake this song came from actress Faye Dunaway and her then-husband, Peter Wolf, lead singer of The J. Geils Band, reported Sterogum. She suggested the remake after hearing Wolf and Orlando sing the tune together while backstage at a Golden Globes ceremony.

In a twist of fate, Mayfield was in the building the night Orlando decided to revive the song. At the 1975 Golden Globe Awards, Mayfield was nominated for Best Original Song for Gladys Knight & The Pips‘ smash “On And On” from the Claudine soundtrack.

“He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You)” was Tony Orlando and Dawn’s last No. 1 hit. Less than two years later, the group disbanded in the summer of 1977 after an appearance at the South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, Massachusetts.

Shortly after, Orlando, mourning the deaths of his best friend, actor Freddie Prinze, and his sister, Rhonda Marie, was hospitalized. When the entertainer returned to the stage, it was without Dawn.

Following his recovery, Orlando re-emerged as a beloved solo headliner, commanding stages in Las Vegas and Branson, Missouri, while co-hosting the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon broadcasts. Additionally, the entertainer devoted much of his later career to supporting American military veterans and remained close with Dawn members Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson. He currently hosts the radio show Rockin’ the Decades With Tony Orlando.

Today, as “He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You)” continues to find new listeners, it serves as a remarkable bridge between two golden eras of American music history. For longtime fans, it’s a trip back to the hits that made Tony Orlando and Dawn household names. For younger listeners discovering it today, it’s simply a fantastic song that connects a beloved ’70s pop classic straight back to its soul roots.

There’s only one Bee Gee left, and today, he turns 80.

Barry Gibb started singing with his twin brothers, Robin and Maurice, back when they were kids performing as The Rattlesnakes in the mid-1950s. The name changed to the Bee Gees once the family landed in Australia in 1958, but real fame didn’t hit until they moved back to England years later. Then came disco, and suddenly three brothers from the Isle of Man were behind some of the most recognizable songs ever made: “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” all of it powering the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack that basically became the sound of the late ’70s.

Here’s the part a lot of people miss, though: Gibb wasn’t just writing hits for his own band. He handed “Islands in the Stream” to Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. He wrote “Emotion” for Destiny’s Child, “Chain Reaction” for Diana Ross, and the “Grease” title track for Frankie Valli. He was quietly stacking up hits for other people the whole time the Bee Gees were stacking up their own.

Then he lost them both. Maurice died suddenly in 2003 after complications from surgery. Robin held on until 2012, after years of fighting cancer. Their younger brother Andy, a star in his own right even though he was never officially in the group, had already died back in 1988. Barry’s been the only Gibb left standing for over a decade now.

He’s kept touring, kept recording, kept showing up, including in 2018, when he was knighted for his music career and made a point of saying the honor belonged to his brothers just as much as it belonged to him. Eighty years in, he’s outlasted the band, outlasted the decade that made them famous, and he’s still the one left to tell people what it was actually like.

Duran Duran recorded some of the biggest synth-pop songs of the 1980s, but one of their most beloved hits was years in the making. In early 1985, the British pop band climbed the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with “Save a Prayer.” The song reached No. 16 in March 1985—three years after it first appeared on the band’s album Rio.

Written by Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor, and Nick Rhodes, the moody “Save a Prayer” featured ‘80s synthesizers and layered electric keyboards as it told a story of a fleeting romantic encounter. The “prayer” lyric—”Don’t say a prayer for me now/ Save it ’til the morning after”— represented the consequences awaiting the next day.

In an interview posted on the Duran Duran website, bassist Jon Taylor recalled writing “Save a Prayer.”

“I do remember that song coming into being,” he said. “I was coming into the rehearsal room and Nick and Andy were involved in taking a relatively simple four-chord progression and sequencing it. We had an early Roland sequencer at the time, and the song was built from that foundation. Then the drums start playing and finally, the lyrics. It’s from a period where every part of the song had to be clearly written.”

Duran Duran was featured in heavy rotation on MTV with songs “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” when the Rio album was first released in the spring of 1982. A Russell Mulcahy-directed music video for “Save a Prayer,” shot in Sri Lanka, also aired on the all-music network.

But “Save a Prayer” wasn’t issued as a U.S. single until early 1985, with a remixed version edited for American listeners, according to Ultimate Classic Rock.

The new version came with a fresh music video, a live version of the song from the band’s Arena album, and it played heavily on MTV, fueling its success amid Capitol Records’ delay in releasing the song.

Le Bon later said he never tired of playing “Save a Prayer” live, citing it as one of the band’s best-written songs.

“I think, good songwriting in the first place is what you need,” he said in an interview posted on the band’s website. “When you’ve got songs like ‘Ordinary World’ and ‘Save a Prayer,’ they’re heavyweight songs, they’ve got depth and profundity and passion and meaning.”

More than 40 years later, “Save a Prayer” remains one of Duran Duran’s most enduring classics. What began as an album track found a huge American audience three years later, becoming one of the defining synth-pop ballads of the MTV era.

Halloween Horror Nights cocktails are notoriously sweet, but this one was a real winner. Fireball cinnamon whiskey has met its match with lemon juice, apple juice, spiced brown sugar syrup and red beet powder. On paper, it sounds like a lot going on but it somehow works. The chocolate bat on top ties it all together (and I won’t judge you if you wan’t to recreate that moment when taking a bite out of it). And the souvenir cup is absolutely worth the splurge.

Pinhead’s Skin & Meatballs, Hellraiser

I don’t know about you, but I still am traumatized from the first time ever watching Hellraiser way back when. But nevertheless, this was one of the dishes I was most looking forward to. The name might be a turn off, but this dish was a 10/10. The meatballs are a star, made from a blend of spicy pork and beef, topped with torn pasta (mimicking flesh) and zesty marinara. We’d brave the terrifying Cenobites for another bite.

Chow’s Southern BBQ Eggroll, Sinner’s Club Juke at Café La Bamba

We love a portable snack. We especially love a portable snack when it’s deep fried to perfection and stuffed with savory barbecue pulled pork. And the crunch of the cabbage elevated it. This thing is hefty in size, making it a great value.

El’s Battery Jerky, Stranger Things

I would probably purchase this based on packaging alone. This one isn’t reinventing the wheel—it’s delicious mac and cheese—but it’s a great option for pickier eaters. And the presentation is amazing, served in a keepsake can. It’s packed with pasta along with garlic bread and pieces of jerky, adding nice contrast in texture. Move over Eggo waffles. In 1932, Aldous Huxley published a novel that remains one of the most highly recommended to science fiction fans. Brave New World is still considered one of the best novels ever written.

In fact, the Modern Library puts it as No. 5 on the list of the best 100 novels written, just behind Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. While it’s slightly less well-known than George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, it is considered the best because of how realistic it is to our own world.

Huxley initially wrote Brave New World as a way to poke fun at the likes of H.G. Wells and other authors who created utopian societies. The aim was to poke fun at the technological advantages, while also working in some real-life observations. However, in the end, he created a genuinely terrifying blueprint that could happen in the future, and it remains a plot that could be seen developing in today’s world.

It all comes down to mass consumerism. Huxley wrote the novel in four months while living in France, and he focused on the way of life he experienced during a trip to the United States. People needed the latest item and gadget at the time, and Henry Ford was one of those names everybody knew. In fact, it’s why Ford became a god-like figure, as people turned from religions and treated pioneers and technology creators as their gods.

When Orwell, whom Huxley had taught at Eton College in 1917, sent him his own novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, one of the comments was about the realism of creating such a totalitarian society. Huxley was sure that beating people into submission wouldn’t quite work the way that Orwell created. Instead, people would allow themselves to be ruled if they were conditioned with pleasure and if they were given drugs to alter their state of mind.

Eventually, Huxley would U-turn on his stance, especially when it came to the use of drugs. After trying psychedelics, he realized that they would bring spiritual enlightenment rather than creating drones of people following a specific social expectation. 

However, he did also note in a 1958 interview that while he set the novel seven centuries after Ford, “a great deal of it has come true within 27 years, or whatever the period is that I wrote it. I often very alarmed at what has already happened in the way of the prophecies being fulfilled. And I do think that we’re moving in that direction.” He even wrote Brave New World Revisited, a non-fiction book, where he admitted that the world was moving closer to that in his original science fiction novel faster than he believed it would.

While Huxley wasn’t too worried about how banning books could affect society and learning, Brave New World was a banned book. Many worried that it would make the anti-social behavior of promiscuity and hedonistic pleasure far too appealing to younger readers, which was the warning in the 1932 novel in the first place.

There have been attempts to develop Brave New World for TV over the years. The most recent was in 2020, originally for Syfy, then it moved to USA Network, and eventually, it moved to Peacock, where it was canceled after one season.

I have always kept a journal. Writing down my thoughts and feelings just came naturally. Unfortunately, making journaling a daily habit didn’t. In fact, for years my New Year’s resolution would be to journal every day. Spoiler alert: I never made it past the first week—instead, I would journal in a less consistent way during the weeks that followed. I figured it was due to my lack of discipline, but it turns out I might have just been journaling at the wrong time. According to psychologist Dr. Kathryn Smerling, there actually is a best time to journal, especially if you want to make it a daily habit.

Of course, writing down your thoughts and feelings is not a one-size-fits-all practice. “It’s your journal,” Dr. Smerling stresses to Parade. “There are no expectations.”

It’s a creative endeavor with absolutely zero rules. It can be used as a way to set intentions for the day, digest what just happened, pray or meditate, or simply as a spot to keep your most random thoughts.

Whatever your main goal, the psychologist shares that “journaling makes you grow, it really does.” She continues, adding that by putting pen to paper (or fingers to a keyboard), “you’re giving yourself a chance to expand yourself.”

Journaling gives you a place to grow, whether you like to write in the morning, at night or any time in between. That said, Dr. Smerling still recommends writing down your feelings at this exact time of day—here’s why.

The Verdict: What Is the Best Time of Day To Journal?

Dr. Smerling is a fan of breaking out a journal first thing in the morning “when you’re fresh and you just woke up.” Why?

“That’s when you’re most alert—after a whole night’s sleep,” she tells Parade.

Now, I wouldn’t describe myself as “alert” when I wake up in the morning, but Dr. Smerling sees this as an advantage.

“Your head hasn’t begun to fill up with all kinds of intrusions that come from a hectic daily life,” she notes, which makes it the perfect time for stream of consciousness writing that won’t be muddled with the stresses of the day. “You’re not ruminating yet. You’re not pouring over the myriad of information that we get on a daily basis.”

The Psychology of Morning Journaling: Brain Dumping vs. Goal Setting

As previously noted, people don’t always journal for the same reason, but generally speaking, people who like to write in the morning tend to do it for two main reasons: brain dumping and goal setting.

Brain dumping

Journaling first thing in the morning is a great way to clear your mind before the day by, well, dumping out all your thoughts so they don’t hang around and impede your day—or, as Dr. Smerling calls it, “ziplocking.”

“Ziplocking means that you want to be able to get up and write almost a stream of consciousness in your journal—whatever that may be,” she explains. “And then ziplocking means to close it, put it away until the next morning.”

Goal setting

If you prefer to use your journal to set priorities or plan, then doing so in the morning is a great time to set your goals or intentions for the day. Journaling, Dr. Smerling says, “does help you focus a lot,” which makes it the perfect time to plan out your day. Plus, she adds, writing down your intentions makes them more concrete and doable, so you’re more likely to follow through.

“Journaling is an excellent way for you to stop the ruminations and stop the rat cycle of thinking about the same thing all the time,” she tells Parade. “When you write things down, they become concrete.”

Morning vs. Evening Journaling: Which One Fits Your Goals?

If your goal is to make journaling a regular part of your life, then Dr. Smerling suggests you don’t stress too much about when in the day you focus on your writing. If you’re a morning person, try journaling in the morning. If you’re a night owl, you can try it at night. In fact, she recommends experimenting with both when you journal and how you journal to find what works best for you.

“You’ll see when you start to express yourself, and you look back and read previous days’ journaling—what is more satisfying for you to read?” she says.

Experimentation aside, morning journaling is best if your goal is to start your day with a clear head and be more present.

“Morning journaling is helpful if you want to be more spontaneous,” she says, adding that your journal entries in the morning will be more unpredictable and free without the weight of the day.

It’s also great for those who want to set intentions for the day ahead, as Dr. Smerling notes, “in the morning, your cortisol and mental clarity are naturally higher, so journaling can help set the intention.”

Evening journaling is best for those who want to reflect on the day they just had.

“It gives you a bird’s-eye view of your day and the things that happened,” she states.

Evening journaling, then, might be a more literal account of your day, versus morning journaling, which Dr. Smerling says “gives you an opportunity to reflect on your unconscious and your subconscious.” By processing your day through journaling, she adds, you can “reduce stress and improve sleep.”

How To Build a Daily Journaling Habit: 4 Expert-Backed Tips

Here’s what the psychologist recommends.

1. Schedule your journaling

Scheduling your journal time might seem daunting, but it’s imperative if you want to form a daily journaling habit. If you want to try morning journaling, Dr. Smerling suggests getting up 15 minutes early and keeping a journal and pen by your bed for easy access.

2. Journal daily for at least 21 days

They say it generally takes 21 days to form a new habit (give or take depending on different factors, per Scientific American), and that’s a good goal to start with. However, Dr. Smerling recommends “at least six weeks” of daily journaling if you really want to commit.

3. Set a timer

If adding a daily journal to your already packed routine feels too daunting, try setting a timer. “Two to five minutes to start,” Dr. Smerling says.

This way you have a set end time, so you don’t have to worry too much about just sitting there with nothing to write. Increase the time as you become more comfortable and go from there.

4. Be curious

Above all, Dr. Smerling tells Parade that if you want to start journaling daily, the best thing you can do is to start.

“Be curious,” she says about yourself and about your journaling preferences. “If you want to make it more concrete, you make it more concrete. If you want to make it more reflective and more mentally reflective and emotionally reflective, you can do that too.”

And remember: “There’s no such thing as perfection when you’re journaling.”

There are some movies that will stand the test of time, and The Dark Knight is one of them. It holds a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and remains one of the best movies of all time.

Both Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb put it on their lists, although IMDb ranks it much higher in the No. 3 spot. On the Rotten Tomatoes list, it’s down in 155th place, surprisingly coming in behind Toy Story 4, which is arguably the worst of the Toy Story movies.

As for The Dark Knight, it’s not surprising that it’s high up the list on IMDb, sitting ahead of the first in the trilogy of Christian Bale Batman movies. Batman Begins was a strong start in the Christopher Nolan trilogy, creating great characters and a realistic origin story, but The Dark Knight elevated everything it could. It helped to create a cinematic crime epic, with two Academy Award wins against Batman Begins’ zero.

One of those wins went to Heath Ledger, who won Best Supporting Actor. Sadly, Ledger passed away in January 2008, months before The Dark Knight was released in theaters, leading to a posthumous win, with his parents and sister accepting the award on his behalf.

This was the movie that showed off Ledger’s epic acting skills, after initially getting a start in the likes of 10 Things I Hate About You and A Knight’s Tale. While Nolan added plenty of detail to his scripts and knew the vision he wanted, he allowed Ledger to improvise many of his scenes, allowing for the unpredictable energy that the Joker needed.

Some of the most popular scenes were improvised, including the sarcastic slow clap as Jim Gordon’s promotion was announced. Nolan had also shared that Ledger would never rehearse the way he was saying a line in front of the crew, allowing him to improvise the cadence and sounds throughout the takes, adding to the surprise for the actors.

One of the most famously believed improvs was the moment Ledger’s Joker walked away from the hospital and tapped the detonator multiple times. This wasn’t improvised at all, with Nolan sharing on the Gotham Uncovered: Creation of a Scene featurette on the Blu-Ray/DVD release that it was completely rehearsed and planned. The delay in the detonation was for safety reasons, as a real building was being demolished in that particular scene, and there was only one take allowed.

The Dark Knight is the strongest in the trilogy starring Bale as Batman, and it belongs on the list of greatest movies ever.
