On March 10, 1963, “That’s the Way Love Is” by Bobby 'Blue' Bland reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, marking one of the most memorable moments in the singer’s career. 

More than six decades later, the soulful ballad remains a powerful reminder of the emotional depth that defined early 1960s rhythm and blues.

Released in late 1962 on Duke Records, the song became a double-sided hit with “Call on Me.” By early 1963, it climbed to the top of the R&B charts and eventually peaked at No. 22 on the pop chart, introducing a wider audience to Bland’s expressive vocal style. The record would later become one of the standout tracks from the album Call on Me/That’s the Way Love Is, released around June 1963.

Written by Deadric Malone, a pseudonym used by Duke Records owner Don Robey, the song blends blues storytelling with soulful orchestration. The arrangement by Joe Scott gave the track a polished feel, with sweeping horns and a smooth rhythm section supporting Bland’s emotional delivery.

What made the record stand out was Bland’s voice. His rich baritone moved easily between smooth crooning and powerful gospel-style bursts. Listeners often remember his dramatic phrasing and the distinctive growl he would add between lines, a signature sound that helped define his recordings in the early 1960s.

The song’s lyrics capture the ups and downs of romance in simple but relatable terms. In one line, Bland sings about how love can shift from joy to heartbreak overnight, an idea many listeners still recognize in their own lives.

Music historians often point out that the track helped shape the soul-blues sound that became popular during that era. Per Britannica, its mix of gospel emotion, blues storytelling and polished studio arrangements would later influence many artists who followed.

Born Robert Calvin Brooks on Jan. 27, 1930, in Rosemark, Tennessee, Bland grew up near Memphis, a city that played a major role in shaping his music. As a young performer, he joined a group of musicians known as the Beale Streeters, which included blues legend B.B. King and singer Johnny Ace.

Bland’s early career included gospel singing and small recording sessions before he eventually signed with Duke Records. By the late 1950s and early 1960s, he was producing a steady stream of hits, including “Cry Cry Cry,” “I Pity the Fool” and “Turn on Your Love Light.”

From 1957 to 1985, the singer placed 63 songs on the R&B charts, including 27 Top 10 hits and three No. 1 singles. That remarkable run earned him the nickname “the Sinatra of the Blues,” a nod to his polished vocal style and smooth stage presence.

Later in his career, Bland continued recording and touring, building a loyal fan base that followed him for decades. His 1974 song “Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City” later gained renewed attention when it was covered by rock and soul artists and sampled in hip-hop.

The music industry recognized Bland’s lasting influence with several honors. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. In 1997, he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to American music.

Bland passed away on June 23, 2013, at age 83 in Germantown, Tennessee. But his songs continue to circulate online, appearing in throwback playlists, video clips and discussions celebrating classic soul.

But according to Airbnb’s Spring 2026 Travel Trends Report, this year’s travel season is marking a major shift in the Sunshine State’s DNA. Forty-seven years ago today, the ‘Queen of Disco’ scored a career-defining moment when her now-iconic anthem climbed to No. 1 on the charts. On March 10, 1979, Gloria Gaynor topped the charts with "I Will Survive," a song that quickly grew far beyond its disco roots to become one of the most enduring empowerment anthems in music history.

The song’s message of resilience helped turn it into a cultural phenomenon that continues to resonate decades later. The song, which was originally released in 1978, would spend three non-consecutive weeks atop the charts and it even earned Gaynor a Grammy for Best Disco Recording in 1980.

Interestingly, Gaynor was offered the song after being dropped by her record label. A short while after she got the news, Polydor got a new president, who was a Gaynor fan, according to NPR. He offered her a chance at a comeback with a song called "Substitute." That track turned into Gaynor's biggest hit.

"They said, 'We think you're the one that we've been waiting for to record this song that we wrote a couple of years ago,'" Gaynor told NPR in an interview that was published in September 2019. "When I read the lyrics, I realized the reason they'd been waiting for me to record that song was that God had given that song to them for them to set aside, waiting for him to get everything in order for me to meet up with them. And that song was 'I Will Survive.'"

Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing as the search enters Week 6—and recently, a neighbor claimed she saw a "suspicious man" near the Tucson, Ariz., home shortly before the abduction.

On the Monday, March 9 episode of the Brian Entin Investigates podcast, the NewsNation correspondent spoke to a woman named Aldine, who lives in Nancy's Catalina Foothills neighborhood.

When Entin asked if there was "anything strange in the neighborhood" that she noticed before Nancy's abduction, Aldine replied, "I did. About two weeks before."

She explained, "I have a picture window in my bathroom, and I see all the people walking by in the mornings. And I noticed this strange guy with his hat down really low. He was kind of hunched over, not in, you know, walking or hiking gear. He was kind of dressed in kind of street clothing. So I thought that was weird. Because that's not normal."

In fact, the out-of-place man—whom Aldine said she saw around Jan. 11—prompted her to mention something to both her husband and her mother.

Entin asked how often she sees people in the neighborhood who make her take notice in that way. She shared, "Not often at all. I see the same people, they're people I know, my friends. I think maybe once, 12 years ago, I saw a strange guy."

Additionally, Aldine said she did speak to the FBI about the man after Nancy's disappearance, admitting, "It freaked me out."

Nancy was last seen at her home on Jan. 31. Since then, the Pima County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) and the FBI have been searching for Savannah's mother tirelessly and combing through evidence. Recently, in fact, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanosruled out a potential new piece of evidence.

Meanwhile, Savannah, her husband, and their son were spotted during a rare public appearance over the weekend. It came days after Savannah paid a visit to the Today studio for the first time since her mom's disappearance.

It's been exactly 23 years since The Chicks rocked the country music industry by making the bold political statement that would go down in history.

On March 10, 2003, The Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines famously spoke out against then-President George W. Bush during a concert in London to criticize the impending invasion of Iraq. Maines said at the time that the country trio was "ashamed" to share their home state of Texas with the president.

“Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all," Maines said to the crowd at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London back in 2003, less than two weeks before the U.S. went to war with Iraq. "We do not want this war, this violence."

It was the next 12 words that would change the group forever: "We're ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas."

The remark would end up altering the course of the group's career. Not only did The Chicks—made up of Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer (previously Robison)—face intense backlash from country music fans, but they would ultimately become blacklisted by much of the industry in the years to follow.

23 years ago today Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks sparked outrage among conservative fans after speaking out against President Bush and the invasion of Iraq.

Maines initially issued a public apology for the comment just days after the concert, expressing her remorse for the "disrespectful" remark about the president.

But three years later, she retracted her apology, telling TIME in May 2006, "I don’t feel that way anymore. I don’t feel he is owed any respect whatsoever."

In September 2006, the band released a documentary titled, Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing, chronicling their experience dealing with the aftermath of the controversy.

While being "canceled" by the public and shunned by country radio, the members of The Chicks, particularly Maines, found themselves on the receiving end of death threats, including one that infamously told them to "shut up and sing."

After the fallout, the group kept on singing, but shutting up was not on their agenda.

In March 2006, they released "Not Ready To Make Nice," the lead single off their seventh studio album, Taking the Long Way. The powerful song was a direct response to the backlash they had been receiving since 2003.

In the song's now-famous bridge, Maines sings,

"I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don't mind sayin'
It's a sad, sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter, sayin' that I better
Shut up and sing or my life will be over"

"Not Ready To Make Nice" went on to win three Grammys in 2007, including awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The group also won the prestigious Album of the Year award that year, as well as Best Country Album.

The Chicks didn't put out another album for over a decade, releasing their eighth studio album, Gaslighter, in July 2020.

Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes one of the most beautiful seasonal spectacles in the United States: cherry blossom season. Each year travelers flock to parks, gardens, and city streets to see the delicate pink and white blooms that signal the arrival of warmer weather. Since the peak bloom is so quick, it’s important to be prepared and plan accordingly. 

The National Park Service has announced the predicted peak bloom dates for the country’s most famous cherry blossoms, helping travelers plan their spring trips. According to the latest forecast, the iconic cherry trees around Tidal Basin in Washington are expected to reach peak bloom between March 29 and April 1 in 2026. Peak bloom is defined as the moment when about 70% of the Yoshino cherry blossoms are open, creating the stunning pink canopy that draws millions of visitors each year. 

The blossoms don’t last forever, though. Weather plays a major role in how long the flowers stay on the trees. Cool, calm conditions can extend the bloom for several days, while wind or heavy rain can shorten the display.

The cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. have a fascinating history. In 1912, Japan gifted more than 3,000 cherry trees to the United States as a symbol of friendship between the two nations. Over time, the trees became a defining feature of spring in the nation’s capital.

What makes Savage Highlands stand out from many traditional parks is its mix of accommodations. Instead of only offering tent sites, the park will include eight resort-style yurts, each able to sleep two to four people. These upgraded yurts will feature modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, bathrooms, and propane fireplaces, giving visitors a comfortable experience in the woods. 

In addition to the yurts, the park plans to offer 18 cabins open year-round. These cabins will include full bathrooms, lofts, and internet access, with some designed to be ADA-accessible and pet-friendly. 

There will also be backcountry campsites for travelers who want a more traditional outdoor experience. The existing lodge on the property is being upgraded and will act as the park’s main hub for information and reservations. 

Perhaps the best part for travelers is that these accommodations are expected to be more affordable than when the property operated as a private lodge, opening the experience to a wider range of visitors.

What to Do at Savage Highlands State Park

While the comfortable yurts and cabins may attract visitors, the surrounding landscape is the real star of the show. The park sits in a region known for its forests, streams, and mountain scenery. When in the area, visitors can:

• Access about eight miles of hiking and multi-use trails winding through the surrounding state forest. These trails are perfect for hiking, trail running, or mountain biking. 
• Cool off by wading in Mudlick Run or the Savage River, two nearby waterways that cut through the forest. The area is also popular with anglers, who can fish in the state forest with the proper license. 
• In winter, the trails transform into routes for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and visitors will even be able to rent equipment directly from the lodge.

A New Reason to Visit Western Maryland

For travelers looking to plan a summer escape in 2026, this new park may be the perfect place to unplug, explore nature, and enjoy a unique adventure in the mountains of western Maryland.

In March 1975, the Doobie Brothers had their first No. 1 hit with the song “Black Water.” Written by singer and guitarist Patrick Simmons, the song, from the 1974 album What We Once Vices Are Now Habits, was a surprise hit. It was originally the B-side to the December 1974 single “Another Park, Another Sunday.”

But on March 15, 1975, “Black Water” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, thanks, in part, to unexpected radio airplay in two cities.

According to Rhino, “Black Water” was re-released as an A-side single on November 15, 1974, after an AM station in Roanoke, VA created buzz for the song.

Doobie Brothers founding member Tom Johnston toldSongfactsin 2009, “That's a story that could have happened back then, but never would ever happen now. Roanoke, Virginia, picked that tune up and started playing it in heavy rotation, and somebody in Minneapolis, who I guess knew somebody in Roanoke, heard the song and decided to follow suit, and it ended up becoming our first No. 1 single. … And oddly enough, it was never looked at as a single by the record company."

It started with a riff

“Black Water,” a song that pays homage to slow-paced life in the South, was born from a guitar riff. In an interview published by Guitar Player, Simmons recalled that he came up with the riff while living in the Santa Cruz mountains and carried it with him for a long time, thinking he’d do something with it someday.

“Then one day in the studio, in between takes for something else, I started playing it,” Simmons recalled. “The mic was still live, and our producer, Ted Templeman, heard it. He pressed the talkback and asked, ‘What is that?’ I said, ‘It’s just a riff I have.’ He goes, ‘You should write a song with that. It’s catchy.’”

Simmons’ lyrics were inspired by a visit to New Orleans, coupled with his love for the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. "It was a sunny day, but when I got on the trolley, it started to rain. And yet it was still sunny. And I’m thinking, 'I gotta write this down,'" he shared. "I started thinking, well, there’s the Mississippi River, and they call that Black Water. I started jotting down other things.  …And then I thought about the Mississippi moon in the sky being reflected on the river. That’s the vision I was having.”

Simmons told Vintage Guitar the song was a culmination of his experiences in the South. “We were playing some shows in New Orleans when the song started to come to me,” he shared. “I think it was all the wonderful experiences – the food, walking along the Mississippi, the French Quarter, Dixieland music in the clubs.”

The success of the song stunned the band

While Simmons was proud of “Black Water,” its placement as a B-side to a more traditional hit-worthy song wasn’t a surprise to anyone in the band.

“Nobody was doing that kind of record with a vocal a cappella," Templeman was quoted as saying in the book The Billboard Book of No. 1 Hits. “It started off as an acoustic song, just an acoustic guitar for the first third of the record, then the drums come in. Records weren't like that on the radio. There were formula pop records then."

Simmons agreed.

“Despite the band’s enthusiasm for ‘Black Water,’ nobody thought it was a hit,” he said in the Guitar Player interview. “You can have an intuition about whether a song has commerciality, but that’s as far as you can go, I think …. And I loved ‘Another Park, Another Sunday.’ I thought that was the most commercial thing we had.  …So when ‘Black Water’ hit, the album took on a new life. I wouldn’t have guessed it would happen like that. But I love that it did.”

More than  50 years later, Simmons, now 77, told Philadelphia’s WMGK that the success of the Doobie Brothers' songs still amazes him.  “To know that our songs get played every hour on classic rock stations worldwide—it’s a dream come true,” he said.

Think about the last time you received disappointing news, and how you responded. Did you wallow in self-pity? Lock your feelings away? Take three deep breaths and then forge ahead with a smile? That last example might seem "healthy," but if you're not allowing yourself to truly process your feelings, you're not actually setting yourself up for success.

Dr. Deepika Chopra (aka "The Optimism Doctor"), professional psychologist and author of The Power of Real Optimism: A Practical, Science-Based Guide to Staying Resilient, Curious, and Open Even When Life Is Hard (out March 10), understands the urge to pretend like everything is OK—even when (especially when) life is far from perfect. But as much as we'd all love to stay positive 24/7, we can't simply grit our teeth and "grin and bear it."

Instead, Dr. Chopra tells Parade what "real optimism" looks like and how it differs from the myth about optimism that many of us mistakenly believe. Plus, she reveals two practices that she swears by to combat anxiety and build resilience: "Worry Time" and creating "ta-da" lists.

The #1 Biggest Myth About Optimism To Stop Believing

First, it's important that we stop embracing certain beliefs about "good attitudes."

"The biggest myth about optimism is that it means feeling happy, positive or blissful all the time—or that it requires ignoring what’s hard," Dr. Chopra tells Parade. "That idea actually turns optimism into pressure, and it backfires."

That means you don't have to put blinders on and try to ignore the difficulties you're facing.

"Real optimism isn’t about pretending things are fine," she explains. "It’s about being keenly and honestly aware of setbacks, roadblocks, grief, worry or anger—all the feelings none of us are immune to—while still holding the belief that these moments are temporary and survivable."

This may not be what you picture when you imagine a positive, resilient individual, but Dr. Chopra says this acknowledgement of circumstances is key.

"An optimistic person doesn’t deny reality. They stay rooted in it," she says. "The difference is that they trust their ability to respond, adapt and persevere, even if they don’t yet know how or when things will change. That trust comes from historical resilience—from everything they’ve already lived through."

They trust themselves, while allowing themselves to imagine "what if" without being rooted in worst-case scenarios.

"In The Power of Real Optimism, I talk about optimism as leaving a small crack open for hope. You don’t have to feel hopeful in the moment. You just have to stay curious about how things could shift—and leave room for something better to occur," she shares.

What Is 'Worry Time,' Exactly?

While many of the most resilient people are incredibly optimistic, that doesn't mean they don't spend time concerned about their relationships, workplace, families and more. In fact, they might actually set aside time specifically to worry.

"Worry gets a bad reputation, but the brain is naturally future-oriented—worry is part of how we anticipate, plan and protect ourselves. The problem isn’t worry itself; it’s uncontained worry," Dr. Chopra tells Parade. "That’s why I teach a practice called Worry Time, which I outline in The Power of Real Optimism."

This practice consists of spending no more than 15-30 minutes of worrying at a time, before moving on.

5 Reasons Why 'Worry Time' Can Actually Be Beneficial

Instead of trying to force positivity or ignore concerns, it can be helpful to give yourself short bursts of time to focus on what's stressing you out. Dr. Chopra explains why this works:

1. It gives worry boundaries

"When you schedule worry into your calendar—literally—your brain learns that worry has a place and a time, instead of running your entire day," she says.

2. It separates productive worry from rumination

"During worry time, you sort what you can act on from what you can’t," Dr. Chopra explains. "This turns worry into information instead of noise."

3. It reduces background anxiety

"Research shows that setting limits around worry can lower overall anxiety because your nervous system isn’t on constant alert," she shares.

4. It increases a sense of control and agency

According to Dr. Chopra, "When worry leads to plans or decisions, it restores confidence instead of draining it."

5. It protects your energy

"Endless worry is exhausting. Contained worry is efficient," Dr. Chopra explains. "I recommend starting with short sessions—sometimes a few per day at first—and gradually working toward one 15–30 minute session daily. More than that tends to escalate anxiety instead of resolve it. The goal is not to eliminate worry, but to work with it in a way that supports resilience."

Another Trick To Increase Resilience: Writing a 'Ta-Da' List

Worry Time isn't Dr. Chopra's only trick—she also swears by "ta-da" lists. And nope, that's not a typo.

"To-do lists focus on what’s unfinished—and the brain already does that exceptionally well," she explains. "A ta-da list, which I discuss in The Power of Real Optimism, highlights what you completed, handled or moved forward."

This does more than you might think.

"This builds self-efficacy—the belief that you can follow through—which research consistently links to resilience and optimism," she tells Parade. "You don’t need impressive wins. Honest progress counts. The brain learns optimism through evidence, not reassurance."

The relocation stems from a bit of a "berth" crunch in Manhattan. Pier 90, Virgin’s usual home, is currently offline as part of a massive, multi-year redevelopment project to address structural issues and upgrade the city’s cruise infrastructure. With Pier 92 also closed for repairs and Pier 88 packed with a rotating schedule of other major lines, the Red Drive fleet is heading to Brooklyn to ensure its final New York itineraries can go off without a hitch.

This change impacts three distinct windows of travel: April, September, and October 2026. Notable sailings moving to Brooklyn include the five-night "Big Apple to Bermuda" runs, the highly anticipated "Virgin Voyages Comedy Fest," and the massive 14-night transatlantic crossing to Spain departing on April 25.

For those looking to catch a Virgin ship from New York, these 2026 dates represent a "last call" of sorts. Following the Valiant Lady’s final departure on October 19, 2026—a 12-night trek to San Juan—the cruise line has no New York sailings listed on its schedule through at least the fall of 2027.

For this dump cake, you’ll need crushed pineapple in juice, unsalted butter, a boxed yellow cake mix, brown sugar and optional garnishes like shredded coconut or maraschino cherries if you want to lean into the whole tropical theme.

I kept things simple and resisted the urge to add nuts or spices this time around, though I can absolutely see the appeal for next time.

For this recipe, no. In fact, that’s key to its success. Using crushed pineapple in juice and keeping it all in the cake adds moisture and flavor.

I followed the directions from Everyday Family Cooking and didn’t drain it at all, which meant there was a lot of liquid going into the pan. At first, I was nervous about the amount of liquid, but a little voice told me to trust the process. That extra moisture is what keeps the cake incredibly soft and helps the edges caramelize as it bakes. It does mean a slightly longer bake time, but the payoff is totally worth it.

The process couldn’t be easier. First, prep a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

Then add the crushed pineapple, juice and all, and spread out evenly.

My Honest Thoughts About the Viral Pineapple Dump Cake

This cake surprised me. As I was making it (and even though I've made dump cakes before) I was thinking that there was no way this would turn out correctly. And sure, because there’s so much liquid, it takes a while to fully bake through, but the trade-off is nothing short of amazing. My house smelled incredible the entire time. When I pulled this baby out of the oven, it was golden yellow and caramelized around the edges with an aroma that transported me straight to a tropical island (for a second, at least).

The crunchy edges melded with the pineapple into something rich and jammy, while the center of the cake stayed pale yellow, moist and tender. It wasn’t overly sweet, which I appreciated, and the boxed yellow cake flavor definitely came through (Pillsbury, FTW!). It’s homey and unmistakably nostalgic with a tropical twist.

With a little shredded coconut and a maraschino cherry on top, it felt like a piña colada on a plate—bright, fruity and a very welcome pivot on a cold, grey, slushy winter day.

But an era has officially come to an end as a beloved seaside institution is reduced to rubble. Coney Beach Amusement Park in Porthcawl, which first opened its gates in 1918 to entertain American troops returning from World War I, is currently being demolished after closing its gates for the final time.

The park was more than just a collection of rides; it was a living piece of Welsh history. Generations of families made the pilgrimage to the promenade, where children who once rode the carousel eventually returned to watch their own grandchildren do the same. Its name was a direct nod to the iconic Coney Island in New York, and for 107 years, it brought that same "all the fun of the fair" spirit to the UK.

When the closure was finally announced, the owners shared an emotional message reflecting on the park's deep roots in the community. In a statement they said: “It is with heavy hearts we would like to share with you personally that this season at Coney Beach will be our last.”

“It’s the end of an era. For over 100 years we and other showmen and their families have lived and worked in Porthcawl helping to make it a busy seaside destination bringing fun, laughter, and fond memories to so many,” the Evans family shared. “We will miss it greatly and while we are sad to see our time here come to an end we are forever grateful to have had the opportunity to have been part of so many generations of families’ lives, young and old. Thank you for sharing our love of ‘all the fun of the fair’ and the legacy that Coney Beach leaves.”
