Roger Taylor is celebrating another milestone.

The legendary Queen drummer turns 77 today, marking more than five decades since he helped found one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Known for his powerful drumming, soaring vocals and songwriting contributions to hits including "Radio Ga Ga" and "These Are the Days of Our Lives," Taylor has remained a driving force behind Queen's enduring legacy.

The British musician and record producer first got his start in music when he was just 15 years old, joining a band at school. In the 1960s, Taylor met Brian May, and they joined a band called Smile along with Tim Staffell. After two years as a band, Smile disbanded, but May and Taylor eventually created Queen with Freddie Mercury (who was a fan of Smile) and recruited John Deacon soon after. In 1973, Queen released their self-titled debut album and have since become an unforgettable, iconic rock band.

British band Queen was awarded the No.1 position in Japanese music magazine Music Life's popularity poll and given commemorative plaques in Tokyo, Japan, on April 8, 1975.

Few bands have left as lasting a mark on rock music as Queen. They redefined the genre of rock with their theatrical performances, genre-blending sound and anthemic hits including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You", "We Are the Champions" and more. Decades after the band's rise to fame, Queen's music continues to resonate with audiences around the world, cementing its status as one of the most influential and celebrated rock bands in history. Last year, Billboard ranked Queen No.5 on their list of best rock bands.

"One secret to Queen’s enduring success is that all four members individually wrote massive, timeless hits for the band," the publication wrote. Taylor specifically wrote "Radio Ga-Ga," which was the lead single for the band's 1984 album, The Works. The hit, which went No. 1 in various countries, inspired the stage name of Lady Gaga. The song's inspiration came when Taylor heard his son utter the phrase "radio ca-ca" while they were driving around Los Angeles, reacting to a song playing on the radio that he disliked.

"The song is a bit mixed up as far as what I wanted to say," Taylor said in an interview in 1984. "It deals with how important radio used to be, historically speaking, before television, and how important it was to me as a kid."

In addition to Queen, Taylor had a successful solo career throughout the 1970s and 1980s, releasing six solo albums. Though Queen was already super successful all across the globe, Taylor formed a solo project for "a bigger outlet."

"I felt I was getting more creative, and I wanted a bigger outlet for it than Queen gave me," he said. "I wanted, I suppose, to be more than just a member of the band."

Queen drastically changed when their frontman, Freddie Mercury, passed away after battling AIDS. Taylor is still very active in the music industry and is currently prepping for a UK tour to support his most recent project, Violence Insane in a Beautiful World. He is set to perform in various cities, including Newcastle, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester, London and Swansea from Sept. 21 to 29.

The album, Violence Insane in a Beautiful World, is set to be released on Sept. 18.

"It's a beautiful world, you know. And kindness is very important, I think, it seems to be forgotten quite a lot," Taylor said in a statement.

In 1973, the Sweet had their biggest hit in the United States with “Little Willy.”  Fifty-three years later, the song remains a turning point in the British glam band’s history—a massive American breakthrough that arrived just as the band made major changes.

Written by hitmakers Michael Chapman and Nicky Chinn, “Little Willy” featured a punchy beat, handclaps, and a call-and-response chorus. The song became a glam-pop anthem in the U.S., reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1973, more than a year after it hit in the UK.

But by the time U.S. fans got wind of the song, the Sweet had already transitioned to a heavier sound.

In an interview with Rocker for Life, Sweet guitarist Andy Scott explained that with “Little Willy,” America embraced a song from an era the band was already trying to move beyond.

“The only [early song] that made it into the charts was ‘Little Willy,’ which was a really weird situation, because it arrived a year and a half after it had been a hit in the UK, and we had moved on from that kind of innuendo stuff into something a little bit more, shall we say ‘rocky,’“ he explained. “So, when we hit America, we didn’t support ‘Little Willy,’ which was probably unfortunate. But as our then manager said, ‘If you’d supported ‘Little Willy,’ and if you didn’t back it up, you’d have been one of those bands that would be in the annals of that was a nice one-hit wonder band.’”

Scott explained that Sweet’s earlier hits featured session musicians (the band played on the B-sides), but things changed after “Little Willy.”

“This was the last track the Sweet were at a point of telling everybody to basically go away and leave us alone because the early, really early bubblegum singles that we had released in ‘71 were sessioned,” Scott told Rock History Music.

He noted that for the British music show Top of the Pops, the BBC required that any song mimed had to feature the actual band members who played on it. So the Sweet re-recorded “Little Willy” without session musicians in order to comply.

“So ‘Little Willy' was a real testing point,” Scott said. “After the success of ‘Little Willy,’ I think that's when everybody went right, ‘Wig-Wam Bam,’ you know it's the band. And you can hear the transition, you know, all of a sudden you've got a band, and we're taking off, you know.”

Through the mid-1970s, the Sweet went on to more U.S. hits with “Ballroom Blitz,” “Fox on the Run,” and “Love Is Like Oxygen” as they broke free from their controlling songwriting and production team.

“By the time we hit America and started to come over in ’75, we were no longer attached to Nicky Chinn or Mike Chapman,” Scott said in an interview. “We were now the songwriters and the producers, and things changed dramatically in that two-year period between ‘Little Willy’ through to ‘Fox on the Run.’"

As a former Rhode Islander, I know a few secrets that (like everyone else who lives someplace where tourists tend to visit) aren't on the usual map. Few side dishes have the universal appeal of pasta salad. It's the first thing people volunteer to bring to a backyard barbecue, neighborhood potluck or summer picnic because it's inexpensive, endlessly customizable and nearly impossible to mess up. If you're invited somewhere at the last minute, all it takes is a box of pasta from the pantry, a handful of vegetables from the fridge and a simple dressing to pull together something everyone will happily scoop onto their plate.

Pasta salad also happens to be one of those rare dishes that appeals to almost everyone. Kids love pasta, adults love pasta and appreciate that it can be packed with freshness and bold flavors, and it pairs with just about anything coming off the grill. Burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, steak...you really can't go wrong.

With so many celebrity chefs putting their own spin on the classic, I wondered whose recipe would be the best of the best. Instead of searching for "the best pasta salad," I decided to let Google choose for me. I simply searched each celebrity chef's name followed by "pasta salad" and made the very first recipe that appeared. That left me with three very different contenders: Rachael Ray's Italian Pasta Salad, Ina Garten's Tomato Feta Pasta Salad and Joanna Gaines's Greek Pasta Salad.

After spending about two hours boiling pasta, chopping vegetables, blending dressings and stirring things up, I lined them all up for a blind family taste test. The results were surprisingly close, but one recipe stood out as the one I'd happily make all summer long.

The Celebrity Pasta Salad Showdown: How We Tested

Over the course of a Saturday afternoon, I prepared all three pasta salads exactly to their recipes. Once they were finished, I chilled each one for an hour before serving them alongside some simple grilled chicken for dinner.

To keep things fair, I didn't tell my family whose recipe was whose. Everyone sampled all three salads and shared their honest opinions before I revealed the chefs behind each one. Between their feedback and my own notes from cooking every recipe, it became pretty clear what each salad did well, and where each one fell a little short.

Rachael Ray's Italian Pasta Salad

Having spent years working for Rachael, I went into this expecting hers to be the one to beat.

The Prep

This was the most labor-intensive recipe of the three; it required the most about of chopping. The salad is packed with colorful peppers, so if you're not a pepper fan, this probably isn't going to become your go-to recipe.

That said, it was also the prettiest salad on the table. The colorful vegetables paired with Cavatappi (my personal favorite pasta shape) made it incredibly inviting. This was really the only one my kids would touch, and I think it was because of the pasta shape.

The dressing comes together in the food processor, which adds another appliance to wash. I was also surprised to see water (or raw stock) blended into the dressing. It felt like an unusual addition, although everything came together nicely.

The Taste Test

The fresh parsley gives the dressing a bright, refreshing flavor that really wakes up the entire salad. While I appreciated the crunch from the raw cubanelle peppers, I personally found the recipe much more pepper-forward than Italian-inspired. I loved the usage of jarred roasted red peppers, I always have those on hand.

When I think of Italian pasta salad, I expect flavors like basil, oregano, salami, mozzarella or classic Italian seasoning. This version leans much more heavily on fresh and jarred vegetables than deli-style Italian flavors.

That said, it's still a delicious vegetarian-friendly pasta salad that's colorful, fresh and perfect for anyone who loves lots of crunchy vegetables. Bonus points from my husband, it was the only recipe that didn't have olives in it (his least favorite ingredient).

The Prep

This recipe was relatively straightforward, and I only had to chop the tomatoes. Like Rachael's recipe, Ina's also relies on the food processor to make the dressing. The biggest surprise here was just how much flavor came from the sun-dried tomatoes. I don't cook with them nearly enough, and this recipe reminded me why I should.

The dressing looked incredibly thick before everything was tossed together, and I actually worried the finished salad might be dry. Between the Parmesan and the pasta, a lot of that dressing gets absorbed quickly.

The Taste Test

This was easily the boldest-flavored pasta salad of the three. Between the oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, Parmesan and an extremely generous amount of feta, every bite was packed with savory flavor.

The combination of two cheeses made it especially rich and satisfying, although I do think I'd reduce the feta slightly next time to let the other ingredients shine a bit more. Combined with the capers in the dressing, 2 salty cheeses, and the olive stirred in, it skewed very salty (which I love!).

It was beautiful on the plate, incredibly colorful and felt like something you'd happily serve at a dinner party. If you're looking for a pasta salad with big, bold flavor, complex flavor with not too much prep work, this one absolutely delivers.

I was very familiar with lots of Rachael's and Ina's recipes, but I hadn't made one of Joanna's before, so I took a stroll to the library to check out her book. I was very impressed!

This was by far the easiest recipe to make.

The dressing simply gets whisked together, no food processor required, which meant fewer dishes and much less cleanup. While it's labeled as a Greek pasta salad, I expected a bit more traditional Greek flavor. With olives and feta already included, I found myself wishing there were ingredients like oregano and fresh lemon to really lean into that profile.

As a Jersey girl. adding stewed tomatoes versus fresh during the summer months is a crime, but I loved the versatility of the ingredient adding freshness while also being able to be pulled from the pantry in a bind.

From a practical standpoint, this was the simplest recipe from start to finish.

Sometimes simple wins.

After chilling for an hour, all of the flavors had time to come together beautifully. The green onions added just enough bite without overpowering anything, while the generous amount of fresh herbs made every bite taste bright and fresh. I also love the use of rice wine vinegar here. It's sweet, but balanced and made for such a vibrant dressing.

This tasted like the classic pasta salad you'd hope someone would bring to a summer cookout. Nothing felt overly complicated, yet every ingredient worked together perfectly.

The Final Verdict: The Best Celebrity Pasta Salad Is...

I honestly didn't expect this one to come out on top.

While Ina's recipe packed the biggest punch of flavor and Rachael's was easily the most colorful, Joanna's was simply the one I kept going back for. It was fresh, balanced and exactly what I want when I think of a classic summer pasta salad.

I also love using bowtie pasta in pasta salad. It gives every serving a playful look and holds onto the dressing beautifully.

Even my husband, who normally avoids olives, enjoyed this one. Because the olives were chopped into larger pieces, he could easily pick them out without affecting the rest of the salad, which made everyone happy, and is a great tip for bringing this to someone's backyard.

If I were headed to a backyard barbecue tomorrow, this is the recipe I'd proudly bring...and maybe don't tell my old boss!

3 Pro Tips for Perfect Pasta Salad Every Time

• If you prefer a creamy pasta salad, stir in about ¾ cup of mayonnaise. I was shocked when all 3 of the most Googled pasta salad recipes were lacking mayo! Any of these recipes can easily be transformed into a creamier deli-style pasta salad with just a little mayo mixed into the dressing.
• Always chill your pasta salad before serving. One hour is the minimum, but overnight is even better. The flavors have time to meld together, making the finished salad taste much more cohesive.
• Dress the pasta while it's still slightly warm. Warm pasta absorbs the dressing much better than cold pasta, giving you a more flavorful salad that won't taste dry after chilling.

There wasn't a bad pasta salad in the bunch, but each one had a very different personality. Rachael Ray's was colorful and veggie-packed, Ina Garten's was bold and loaded with rich flavor, and Joanna Gaines's was the kind of classic pasta salad I could see myself making on repeat all summer. No matter which one you choose, these recipes prove there's no wrong way to make pasta salad, just different versions for different occasions. But if you only have time to try one, Joanna's is the recipe I'd recommend every single time.

With everything costing more nowadays, and a dollar feeling like it can’t stretch as far as it used to, supplementary things feel more like a luxury that you can do every so often. Such as getting your nails done at a salon, things like that aren’t necessary to live, so it becomes a treat you might splurge on less and less. And while nothing completely comes close to salon-quality nails—especially if they’re gel extensions or acrylics—some brands are now making press-on nails that look so good that it doesn’t feel like a huge downgrade if that’s all you can afford. 

I’ve always loved getting my nails done; I started getting acrylics in college, and have been getting Gel-X extensions for a few years now. But between financial lows and time constraints, I don’t go to the salon as often as I’d like. Because of that, and the low effort it takes to apply them most of the time, I’ve turned to press-on nails more and more. I’ve even reviewed a few here before. And one brand that I’ve always been interested in trying is KISS, specifically their KISS ImPRESS line of fake nails. 

When it comes to things that my press-ons absolutely have to have, they need to look natural, or as if I went to the salon to get them (that means that, within their kits, they have good shapes and sizes that I don’t have to file down too much to fit my nail and look good). They also should have a good application method. Granted, I have my go-to nail glue, but still, the simpler and easier, the better. And if it comes with glue that I already like (such as a KISS nail set), then that’s even better because I don’t have to fetch my own. 

So, with that all in mind, how do KISS ImPRESS press-on nails compare to others that I’ve tried? And how did their “no glue, peel and stick” application method work out? I give my honest review of theKISS ImPRESS press-on nails below, and share everything you need to know before you go out and try them yourself. Plus, I let you in on what they’re actually perfect for—hint: you’ll be happy if you have a special event coming up.

What Are New KISS ImPRESS Press-On Nails?

You might have heard of the brand, KISS, before; they make popular press-on nail products as well as false eyelashes (and glue for both). While their press-on nails that use glue are their most well-known items, the KISS ImPRESS Press-On No Glue Nails are a newer product from the company that has a sticky tab already attached to each fake nail. So, in theory, all you have to do is prep your nails, size the fake ones out and stick them on. 

Each box of KISS ImPRESS nails comes with 30 fake nails in over a dozen different sizes, so that you can find the right fit for each of your nails. It also comes with instructions, a cuticle pusher, a mini nail file and one alcohol wipe for prepping your natural nails. It’s all very similar to what you’d get in a glue press-on kit, except no glue because the sticky adhesive tabs are already adhered to the fake nail.

For reference, I tried the Amerie set of nails from their “design” collection first, around the end of June. And then I put on the Coast set of nails, from the same design line, right before the Fourth of July.

As I hinted at above, these are the best for one need, in particular: special events or occasions. Whether that includes weddings, galas, holiday parties or even vacations that you need a quick manicure for, these press-on nails are made for specific events. More on that later, including why.

How Long Do No Glue ImPRESS Nails Actually Last?

KISS advertises on their website and in the kits that these ImPRESS nails are meant to stay on for at least 10 days. And I can attest to the fact that that’s true! 

In fact, I had to take the second set off before they were even getting loose around the 14-day mark. The first pair I tried on lasted over 10 days, but some nails did start popping off on their own a couple of days later, so I took that set off at the same time.

One downside, though, was that, due to the nature of the sticky tabs, there was bound to be a gap between my natural nail and the fake one. This bothered me a bit, especially after a week or so of them being on, but it wasn't something other people would notice easily (or show up in pictures).

Now I will say, the one thing that I was not expecting was the fact that, because of the sticky tabs, they moved around if you pressed on the sides of them. They wouldn’t readjust to a new place on your nail, but the jelly nature of the tabs made it so that you could, like, jiggle it around in place. This meant that when I grabbed something big or even tried to readjust my clothing, the nail would push back into my cuticle. While this didn’t hurt, it was sometimes uncomfortable and made it harder to grasp things, which isn’t what I’m used to with other press-ons. 

With that said, though, this quirky feature didn’t weaken the adhesive or make them pop off before 10 days. In fact, even though there is this posable kind of quality to them, they were hard to pull off when I was done with them. So the staying power is definitely there, especially for what it’s advertised for. 

Do KISS ImPRESS Nails Look Real in Photos?

Yes, these look good in photos. When I had my ImPRESS nails on, they fit so perfectly on my natural nails that they matched the shape of them and didn’t let the real nail peek out from behind. 

Both sets that I tried had very cute and complex designs, so they definitely looked like I went and got them done. But they looked real in photos and in person. Honestly, they even looked like they could be expensive press-ons (you couldn’t tell they were applied with adhesive tabs) or even gel extensions, especially when I first put them on.

The Specific Need: Why These Are the Ultimate Special Occasion Nails

As mentioned before, these press-ons move around on your nail, which can be cumbersome and might make them less desirable than regular glue press-on nails. However, with how good they look once they’re applied and how many options they have available to buy, they are perfect for special occasions. Honestly, I’d say they are the ultimate special occasion nails. 

Now, if it’s your special day—such as your own wedding, or it’s your birthday or anniversary trip—you’ll most likely want to get nails that can hold up a bit better and that aren’t meant to be so temporary (at least in comparison to salon nails or glued-on ones). 

But, if you have an event coming up that you want nice manicured nails for—but you don’t want to splurge at the moment, or you don’t want these specific nails on for more than a week without damaging your natural nails—KISS ImPRESS press-ons are the perfect solution. 

If you prefer the look of professionally done gel extensions or acrylics, or you want something sleek and polished-looking (no pun intended) but you don’t want to make the commitment to a design or color for this special occasion, then this is where the KISS ImPRESS nails come in handy. 

Up until now, if I couldn’t afford to go to my nail lady or I didn’t have the time, but I had an event coming up, I usually would opt for press-on nails. This goes for instances where I wanted a new manicure, but I also didn’t want to commit to something that would last a month or more (which is what salon-quality nails get me). However, even press-ons stay too long sometimes for what I need them for, and unless they're already coming off, they aren't easy to remove without acetone.

But the ImPRESS nails are now another option that is even more perfect for special occasions where lots of pictures are being taken, and/or maybe there’s a theme you have (or want) to stick to (again, pun intended), and you need your nails done, but you want a short-term option. 

Maybe you’re a bridesmaid in your best friend’s wedding, and she asks all of her wedding party to have neutral-colored nails. But you’re a Pinterest-inspo Gel-X nail girlie, and the thought of asking your nail technician to give you a plain gel manicure pains you. Having the option for press-on nails that look professionally done and last for a little over a week (at least) is perfect. 

The other benefit to using ImPRESS nails is that they’re mess-free and pretty beginner-friendly. So if you’re in a rush out the door for your special event—a work conference, a family reunion, a bachelorette party, etc.—you can throw these in your bag and apply them on-the-go, and you won’t have to worry about nail glue leaking in your liquids bag (it has happened to me many times before, unfortunately) or nail glue getting all over the place as you hasten to apply your nails for whatever event you have coming up. 

Another downside to press-on nails you have to glue on is the fact that if you move too fast or you’re not super careful, you might get glue to seep out the sides and onto your skin. And if you’re in a hotel room or not home, you might not have acetone to clean it up, leaving you with a less-than-professional-looking manicure. Or if you know you’re going to have to apply them quickly or on-the-go (in a car, outside of the house, etc.), the adhesive tab makes it a great option for something that looks good but has virtually no mess involved.

How to choose the best ImPRESS nail design for weddings and galas

Similar to their glue-on nails, the KISS ImPRESS nails come in different colors and collections. There are the Color FX ImPRESS nails, which are solid colors with visual effects. They have cat eye nails, holographic ones, shimmery and luminous ones. These are good if you have an event with no strict nail color code, but you don’t want a “loud” pattern—or if you’re someone who wants something fun but you still prefer one-color nails.

Then they have their “color” line, which includes solid colors as well as subtle ombre nails. They’re all glossy, but some are a bit shinier than others, so it’s really about personal preference. These are perfect for weddings that ask their bridal parties to have solid or neutral colors (especially if you choose from their Bare but Better collection). If you’re someone who just likes solid colors but you want it to look like you got them done at a salon, these are also going to be the ones you’ll want to choose. 

And lastly, they have their design collection, which is exactly what it sounds like. These include French manicures, but also more elaborate designs—some are even 3D and textured. If you’re someone who needs a little pizzazz with their manicured nails, this is going to be your go-to.

Are KISS imPRESS No Glue Nails Damage-Free?

In comparison to press-on nails that you need to glue on—and definitely compared to gel extensions or acrylic nails—these cause way less damage. And I would say they’re pretty damage-free, though anything can happen, unfortunately. 

But with the ImPRESS nails, as they’re sitting on your natural nail, no chemical or adhesive agent is bonding to it, making it inherently safer and better for your nail’s health. 

When you take them off, I found that the sticky tab was very strong and usually damaged the fake nail. However, it never pulled on my natural nails in a way that broke them. Even though the adhesive tab did leave residue on my nail that took a bit longer to remove, it kind of just felt like those tabs that are used in the mail to stick a credit card to letters. Essentially, my nails were just as intact as they were when I applied them (which I can’t always say is the case when I use other fake nail application methods).

Step-by-Step: How To Apply imPRESS Nails So They Don't Pop Off

If you’ve ever applied press-on nails at all, even with glue, these are going to be a breeze to put on. The steps are below!

1. Find the correct size ImPRESS nail for your natural nail. If you’re between sizes, go with the bigger one and file the sides down to fit. You don’t want to stick a nail on that’s too small, because it’ll be uncomfortable and more likely to pop off early. 
2. Use the alcohol prep pad that came with the set on each nail. This dehydrates the surface so there is no moisture as you apply the fake nail, which also ensures it stays on longer.

1. Peel off the plastic backing on the nail, revealing the adhesive tab that’s already stuck on each press-on. 
2. Align the bottom of the nail with your cuticle (or slightly above it), and press down on the nail firmly to apply. Hold for about 15 seconds or so (make sure all sides are flush against your real nail). 
3. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each nail until all of your nails have an ImPRESS press-on nail on them. 
4. NOTE: Make sure that your nail is facing the right way up by making sure the part of the fake nail that has the sticky tab is near your cuticle.

The Verdict: Are They Worth It?

Here are some of my positive and negative thoughts about my experience with KISS ImPRESS nails.

They stay on for the amount of time they promise—and then some.

Sticky residue left on your nails that is tricky to remove.

They are a natural nail shape, so they look real or like professional gel extensions.

There are inevitable gaps that form between the nail and your real nail.

They have very cute, stylish and trendy patterns as well as neutral colors—something for every need.

If your real nails are short, the sticky tab is visible under the nail and gets dirty.

They have a good selection of lengths and shapes as well, for whatever style you prefer.

They move around slightly, making them dig into your cuticles if you try to grab bigger things or even itch yourself.

They are mess-free.

Not reusable even if you take them off and haven’t chipped them.

They are easy to size to your nails and even easier to apply.

So overall, I do think they’re worth trying out or using because they look really good when applied, they’re low-maintenance and low-effort, plus they fulfill the need of getting a sleek manicure quickly. 

If you’re someone who won’t deal with the slight movements of the nails well, or you always prefer fake nails that stay on for two weeks or longer, then I would say they’re not for you. But if you need something fast for a special event or occasion, or you like to switch up your nails weekly, these are absolutely something you should try soon.

"Right this way, Madame," I heard from the smallest, quietest area inside PortMiami’s cruise terminal—a sharp contrast to the usual terminal frenzy of dodging luggage carts and jockeying for escalators.

Why yes, yes, I think I will.

I was recently hosted on MSC's newest flagship, World America, a 6,700-capacity vessel sailing 7-day Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries out of Miami. Like many modern cruise lines, MSC features a "ship-within-a-ship" luxury enclave called the Yacht Club—and the VIP treatment begins before you even step on board.

My stateroom was incredibly spacious at roughly 269 square feet, featuring a plush king-size bed (easily the comfiest I’ve ever experienced at sea) with two nightstands, a separate couch area, and an outdoor balcony spanning the full width of the room. Two double-wide closets offered enough hanging space to easily unpack two large suitcases, and while there was an in-room espresso machine and mini-fridge, the barista-pulled options outside were far superior (more on that in a moment).

The bathroom was full-sized, featuring a vanity with ample counter space for two toiletry kits, built-in shelving, and a walk-in glass shower with an overhead rainfall spout and a separate hand-wand. The water temperature was consistently hot with excellent pressure, though adding a small floor guard would be a welcome tweak, as the tile floor tended to get a bit wet.

For tech needs, USB and USB-C ports were built into both sides of the bed, alongside a European outlet, a US outlet, and a central charging panel on the vanity. I found plenty of surface space to line up portable power banks and my laptop, and the hair dryer was already plugged in and ready to go.

While many megaships battle over who has the tallest waterslide, MSC is quietly dominating the spa and wellness game. Spas that feature extensive geothermal and hydrotherapy circuits are major wins in my book, and MSC went all-out to create a thermal suite you could easily relax in for half a day.

Following a relaxing Balinese massage, I made my way into the wet area to find a generously sized temperature-controlled pool, heated tile loungers, and an array of specialized rooms. It felt like an adult spa playground: you could rest in the Salt Room, fully unfurl on a heated stone platform in the Japanese Ganbanyoku room, cycle through knee-high hot and cold plunge pools, or cool off in an actual Snow Room—a space entirely dedicated to making you feel like a polar bear in the Arctic.

While the functional goal is to trigger heat-shock recovery and deep-relaxation benefits, it’s honestly just fun to try these novel spaces. Staff actively monitor the thermal loungers to prevent "chair-hogging," and with MSC expanding its med-spa menu offerings, you could easily justify booking a short sailing purely for this spa.

Main Dining vs. Specialty Restaurants

World America offers main dining rooms tailored to each cabin experience—including La Foglia, Esagono and Hexagon for Bella and Fantastica guests, Bubbles for Aurea guests and Les Dunes for Aurea suite guests, and the main Il Mercato buffet (which features two distinct wings with indoor/outdoor seating and La Brasserie for overflow brunch space). While I didn't sample every main dining room, Les Dunes proved perfectly serviceable for American comfort classics, turning out an excellent French onion soup and a rich Bolognese lasagna paired with warm, friendly service.

At Il Mercato, I was thrilled by the sheer variety of morning egg options—including international variations that keep breakfast interesting. Alongside standard continental spreads and Asian, cold-cut, and Mexican stations, the true standout was the fresh-cut fruit bar, piled high with juicy dragon fruit, cantaloupe, papaya, and pineapple. While the buffet gets busy around 11:00 AM, the staff seamlessly opens La Brasserie upstairs for overflow seating, and the extended operating hours make it easy to sleep in.

• Prime Cut Steakhouse: Located on Deck 8, this venue swaps out the dark, stuffy traditional steakhouse aesthetic for a warm, cozy interior featuring dark woods and an open kitchen. The classic blue cheese wedge salad was fantastic, as was the perfectly seared filet mignon.
• Paxos: A Greek specialty spot set in the airy aft World Promenade space. Decorated with crisp blue-and-white tiles and vibrant pink bougainvillea, it never felt overly crowded. At $40 per person for three courses—including two starters, authentic Greek tzatziki, fresh grilled fish, and tender lamb—the value was exceptional.
• Teppanyaki: Featuring three menu tiers (two covered under standard specialty dining packages under $50, and a $20 upgrade tier), this spot delivers high-energy fun. I opted for the upgrade—which included half a grilled lobster, scallops, and wagyu beef seared live in front of us—while our chef cracked classic dad jokes and led the table in old-school sing-alongs.
• Eataly: The absolute star of the show. The burrata, served over a fresh basil reduction and tomato coulis, was impossible to stop eating. The pasta carbonara was spot-on, but the Eataly Tiramisu is a true showstopper—a viral sensation for a reason, served perfectly oozy as the waiter lifts its collar at your table.

High-Energy Entertainment

Entertaining 6,000+ guests a night across two main stages, a loft venue, and various lounges is no small feat, but the production value felt intentional and engaging.

The lineup ranged from a kick-off Queen medley featuring four singers, dancers, and aerialists to Momentous—a magic show that somehow made a full-size Trans Am appear on stage out of thin air—and Odyssey, an acrobatic retelling of Homer’s epic set to modern pop tracks. Production shows like Dirty Dancing (a fun take on the '80s classic) and Classical Soul (a mashup of Pavarotti classics and 60s–90s soul hits led by a UK's Got Talent winner) kept audiences energized, while 80s nights and 2000s hit medleys had guests dancing in the aisles.

I loved the subtle nods to MSC's Italian heritage—like hearing 1950s Frank Sinatra tunes playing through the promenade in the early mornings, or catching an opera soprano in the lounge spaces. And, of course, no cruise is complete without an ABBA tribute band for a low-key night out.

Kids' Fun: The Harbor, Waterslides & Arcades

For families, the top-deck Harbor district is a full-scale outdoor waterpark. It features a tube water coaster, a double-rider racer slide, a vertical drop slide, an extensive ropes course with a high-flying zip line, and Cliffhanger—a thrilling swing that dangles riders out over the edge of the ship 50 meters above the sea.

Indoor spaces are equally stacked: there's a bumper car arena (available for a small additional fee), dedicated LEGO-partnered youth clubs, and the Luna Park arcade, filled with retro 80s and 90s games alongside an amphitheater host to silent discos and family karaoke.

Throughout the trip, I saw hordes of kids, teens, and tweens zooming around and having the time of their lives in every corner of the ship. The youth clubs clearly offered plenty of space to make new friends; over dinner at Teppanyaki, my table mates even mentioned how much their teens were loving karaoke, the arcade, and the waterparks—adding that the crew had truly gone out of their way to make them feel welcome.

Lounges, Bars & Coffee Culture

The bars on World America feel distinct and purposeful rather than cookie-cutter. Standouts include Masters at Sea (a two-level English pub featuring live acoustic classic rock), The Gin Project, and a dedicated mixology lounge with its own outdoor terrace. These spaces quickly became the favorite multi-gen hangouts on board, packed with lively crowds almost every night of the trip.

As a self-proclaimed coffee snob, my first stop on any ship is locating barista-pulled espresso. The Coffee Emporium delivered proper Italian-style lattes and espresso drinks alongside incredible pistachio croissants. Sitting outside near the promenade with an early morning cafe and wake views quickly became one of my favorite daily rituals.

Sweet Treats

If you have a late-night sweet tooth—like me—MSC is a hidden gem. The ship houses the largest chocolate experience in the fleet, complete with a chocolate fountain, handmade truffles, and custom-engraved chocolate bars. Nearby, a gelato counter serves constantly churned gelato in house-made chocolate-dipped waffle cones (my go-to was a half-pistachio, half-chocolate cup). While these carry a small extra fee, the prices are far lower than what you'd pay in any major city.

I was pleased to learn Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is a designated global "Hope Spot"—where marine scientists actively restore coral reefs. In fact, that commitment carries right back onboard World America, one of the most energy-efficient ships at sea. It runs on dual-fuel LNG engines that cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20 percent and generates over 84% of its freshwater onboard to protect local island supplies.

At the tip of the cay sits Ocean House Beach, an exclusive area reserved for Yacht Club guests. The private Ocean House Restaurant here was an absolute highlight of the entire trip: we enjoyed conch fritters, fresh fish tacos, and grilled mahi mahi paired with hand-crafted cocktails right on the oceanfront porch.

On our other port days—a coffee tour in San Juan and a "Greatest Hits" tour in Puerto Plata—our butler, Krishna, met us in the Top Sail Lounge and escorted us off the ship by golf cart directly to our excursion pickup point, a massive relief in the Caribbean heat.

Krishna escorted us to our specialty dinner on night one while we were getting our bearings, and handled our port-day transits seamlessly. For older adults in a multigenerational group, the Yacht Club provides a quiet, low-stress sanctuary, while younger family members can stay in affordable standard cabins and enjoy the high-energy waterparks and clubs below.

The Yacht Club dining room itself has the feel of a high-end restaurant, serving multi-course meals with dishes like pan-seared black cod, delicate terrines, and surprisingly great vegetarian options.

What makes all of this even more compelling is the value. When you compare pricing, an MSC Yacht Club suite often comes in at a similar price point to a standard balcony room on other premium lines—yet it includes butler service, private lounge and pool access, beverage packages, internet, and front-of-line access across the ship.

Purple Rain, ranked as the Greatest Rock and Roll Movie of All Time by Consequence, officially hit theaters on July 27, but one day prior, Prince and his co-stars held court at the Mann's Chinese Theatre (now the TCL Chinese Theatre) in Hollywood, California.

Forty-two years ago, Purple Rain proved that Prince's Hollywood gamble would pay off. Studio executives were reportedly skeptical about a rock star leading a dramatic feature, but its electric premiere proved the critics wrong, kicking off a phenomenon that would earn its place in movie history.

Rhino Records reported that some of the '80s biggest stars attended the event. These celebrities included Stevie Nicks, David Byrne of the Talking Heads, Lionel Richie, "Weird" Al Yankovic, Eddie Murphy, and Pee Wee Herman.

Richie praised Prince's vision during the premiere. "It now becomes an extension. What we've been doing for a long time is taking each song and making a video out of it," he explained. "What [Prince] has made now is a motion picture out of his album. It's a very important step."

Purple Rain follows "The Kid," a gifted but brooding Minneapolis musician striving to make it big while dealing with a stormy home life and his own pride. As his band struggles to stay together, he falls for aspiring singer Apollonia and finds himself locked in a fierce rivalry with charisma-packed frontman Morris Day. By channeling his heartache and passion directly into his music, he delivers a legendary, show-stopping performance that transforms him into a superstar.

It wasn’t just that the record served as the soundtrack to the movie; the two were practically codependent. Purple Rain played like a two-hour music video for the songs.

Driven by powerhouse hits like "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy," the album cemented its place as an undisputed masterpiece. It is preserved in the Library of Congress as an audio recording that is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

The project earned Prince and the Revolution two Grammys and won Prince an Academy Award in 1985 for Best Original Song Score. Upon accepting the award, he introduced Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin, members of the Revolution band, who accompanied him to the stage.

He said, "This is very unbelievable" about winning an Oscar. Prince continued, "I could have never imagined this in my wildest dreams."

Purple Rain reached the number one spot at the domestic box office in the United States for a single week in July 1984. It ultimately grossed more than $80 million worldwide against a $7.2 million budget reported the website Box Office Prophets.

There isn't much that Bob Dylanhas done that isn't iconic—from his witty and cutting lyrics to becoming the first songwriter to win a Nobel Prize in Literature. But perhaps one of the most controversial things he did in his career was plug in during the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Days earlier, History.com reports Dylan released "Like a Rolling Stone" on the airwaves, a stark departure from the acoustic protest songs that made him famous.

Still, Newport Folk Festival concertgoers were expecting the familiar from Dylan, which he delivered during his Saturday concert. But seemingly at the last minute, he decided to whip up a backup band that evening with keyboardist Al Kooper and members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, rehearsing all night long to wow the crowd with an electric set. The crowd reportedly didn't take it well; while half cheered in excitement as Dylan played a plugged-in version of "Maggie's Farm," the other half booed and considered it a "betrayal" of his folk roots.

In true Dylan fashion, he didn't care. He then decided to embark on his now-famous "Electric Tour." But to do so, he needed a backup band. And that is where "The Hawks" came in.

The Formation of 'The Band'

After touring with Dylan, Rolling Stone wrote that the group moved into what is now known as "Big Pink," a mountain house in Saugerties, New York, near Woodstock, miles away from Dylan. He'd reportedly come over each afternoon and evening to jam with them, sometimes playing old folk classics and sometimes writing music on the spot. Occasionally, neighbors would drop by as audiences gathered around them, and The Hawks began taking on a moniker bestowed upon them by locals: The Band.

“You know, for one thing, there aren’t many bands around Woodstock and our friends and neighbors just call us the band, and that’s the way we think of ourselves," guitarist Robbie Robertson reportedly told the outlet. "And then, we just don’t think a name means anything. It’s gotten out of hand — the name thing. We don’t want to get into a fixed bag like that.”

Eventually, those casual basement ramblings inspired their 1968 debut album Music from Big Pink, and members Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Robertson began making some of the most iconic contributions to rock and roll history.

Some of The Band's Most Notable Hits

Over time, they would be considered among the most poignant musicians in roots rock, despite the fact that only one member of the band was actually from the U.S. Here are some of their most recognizable and acclaimed tunes:

• "It Makes No Difference" (1975) — Music critics frequently name this tune as one of the most heartbreaking ballads of the decade.
• "The Weight" (1968) — The Band's most famous and enduring narrative masterpiece, this classic cracked the UK Top 20 but unexpectedly stalled at No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 upon its initial release.
• "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" (1969) — This American Civil War ballad served as a massive, critically acclaimed triumph for the group, though Joan Baez’s 1971 cover version, which reached the NO. 3 on the charts.
• "Up on Cripple Creek" (1969) — This would be the group's single highest-charting hit in history, peaking at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.

By 1978, they called it quits. In 1983, they reunited, minus Robertson, until bassist Danko died in 1999, and they permanently called it quits.

When rock vocalist Eddie Vedder was in high school, he began writing a song that would become "Better Man" for the band Pearl Jam. When reflecting on writing the song, Vedder said, "Sometimes I think of how far I've come from the teenager sitting on the bed in San Diego writing 'Better Man' and wondering if anyone would ever even hear it."

Because of its more mainstream sound, members of Pearl Jam were reluctant to record "Better Man" and initially rejected the track for their second studio album. Producer Brendan O'Brien was a big supporter of the track, saying, "We cut it once for Vs., he wanted to give it away to this Greenpeace benefit record, the idea was that the band was going to play and some other singer was going to sing it. I remember saying to the engineer, Nick, 'This is one of their best songs and they're going to give it away! Can't happen!'"

A version of several recordings by the group eventually landed on their third album, Vitalogy.

While "Better Man" was never released as a single, it still became one of Pearl Jam's most played radio songs and the most successful song from Vitalogy on the rock charts. The song took number one on the Billboard Rock Tracks charts, and spent eight weeks in that top spot.

"Better Man" tells a heartbreaking and haunting story of a woman trapped in a bad relationship. Vedder himself has stated that the song is an ode to abusive relationships. He even went so far as to say, "it's dedicated to the bastard that married my Momma." 

Due to the popularity and success of the track, "Better Man" was included on Pearl Jam's greatest hits album, rearviewmirror. Additionally, both American Songwriter and Kerrang listed the song in the top ten of lists of the greatest Pearl Jam songs of all time.

Recorded for Spector's landmark 1963 holiday album, the emotional performance gradually became her signature recording and one of the most enduring Christmas songs ever released.

Its popularity reached another level beginning in 1986, whenDavid Letterman invited Love to perform the song on his Christmas show. The appearance became an annual tradition that continued for nearly three decades, with Letterman famously introducing her as the "Christmas Queen." After Late Show with David Letterman ended, Love continued performing the song on television each holiday season, keeping the tradition alive for new generations of viewers.

That long-standing nickname made headlines again in 2022, when Mariah Carey attempted to trademark the phrase "Queen of Christmas" because of her smash hit "All I Want For Christmas Is You." Love didn't hesitate to defend the title she felt she had earned over decades of holiday performances, writing on Facebook:

Variety reported that Love's comments joined a broader challenge to Carey's trademark application, which was ultimately unsuccessful. According to the Intellectual Property Brief, a journal published by the American University Washington College of Law, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board entered a default judgment against Carey's company after it failed to respond to the challenge, ending the effort to trademark "Queen of Christmas."

The Rolling Stones are climbing the U.S. music charts again, more than six decades after the British rock band scored its first No. 1 hit with “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.”

The band’s new studio album, Foreign Tongues, debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, giving the legendary group its 39th top 10 album on the chart. The result also extends the Rolling Stones’ record for the most Billboard 200 top 10 albums since the chart began publishing regularly in 1956.

But the band reached an even bigger milestone on another Billboard chart.

Foreign Tongues opened at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart, marking the Rolling Stones’ first-ever No. 1 on the sales-only ranking. The chart counts physical album purchases and digital album downloads.

The achievement comes 61 years after “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” first reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 10, 1965. The song had debuted on the Hot 100 on June 12, 1965, beginning a chart history that would eventually include eight No. 1 hits and 23 top 10 songs for the band.

The new album’s chart performance shows that the Rolling Stones remain a major force in music, even after more than 60 years in the business.

Rolling Stones Score First No. 1 on Top Album Sales

According to the chart information provided by Billboard, Foreign Tongues sold nearly 49,000 copies in its first week. The total included vinyl records, CDs and digital downloads.

That was enough for the album to lead the Top Album Sales chart, giving the Rolling Stones their first No. 1 on the list. The chart has tracked pure album sales since May 1991.

The band has released more than two dozen studio albums during its long career. Its latest project is also making an impact across several other U.S. album charts.

Foreign Tongues reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200, No. 2 on Top Rock Albums, No. 3 on Top Rock & Alternative Albums, No. 3 on Vinyl Albums and No. 3 on Indie Store Album Sales.

The Billboard 200 debut also added another record to the band's long list of achievements. With 39 top 10 albums, the Rolling Stones continue to hold the record for the most Billboard 200 top 10s. Barbra Streisand follows with 34, while Frank Sinatra has 33.

The Billboard 200 and Top Album Sales measure different things. The Billboard 200 combines album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units, while Top Album Sales focuses only on album purchases.

That difference helps explain why Foreign Tongues could reach No. 1 on the sales chart while debuting at No. 7 on the Billboard 200.

The album was released on July 10, 2026, and is the Rolling Stones' latest studio project following 2023's Hackney Diamonds. It was produced by Andrew Watt and includes contributions from musicians such as Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, Robert Smith, Bruno Mars and Chad Smith.

The album also includes a recording featuring the late Charlie Watts, who recorded the material with the band during a 2021 Los Angeles session before his death.

Rolling Stones Billboard Chart History Continues

The new chart success adds another chapter to a career that began in 1962.

The Rolling Stones first became major stars during the British Invasion in the 1960s. Their early success included songs such as “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction,” “Get Off of My Cloud” and “Paint It, Black.”

“(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” became the band's first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. The group later returned to the top of the chart with “Get Off Of My Cloud,” “Paint It, Black,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “Ruby Tuesday,” “Brown Sugar,” “Angie” and “Miss You.”

The band's most recent Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 was “Miss You,” which spent one week at the top in 1978. The Rolling Stones have since continued to place songs on the Hot 100, including “Start Me Up,” which peaked at No. 2 in 1981.

The group’s current lineup includes Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. The band continued as a three-piece core after the death of Watts in 2021, with Steve Jordan serving as its regular drummer.

Foreign Tongues also continues a late-career run that includes Hackney Diamonds, the band's first new album of original material in 18 years. Released in 2023, that album became the Rolling Stones' 14th No. 1 album in the United Kingdom.

For a band that first topped the Hot 100 in 1965, the latest Billboard success shows that the Rolling Stones are still selling albums and reaching new chart milestones in 2026.

Jack Whittaker once called himself the man who wished he'd never won the lottery, and his story is getting new attention this week as Powerball officially crosses the Atlantic.

Whittaker won a $315 million Powerball jackpot on Christmas morning in 2002. Within just a few years, he told ABC News he wished he'd torn up the ticket entirely.

What followed was a well-documented unraveling: lawsuits that damaged his construction business, a divorce from his wife of 42 years, the drug-overdose death of his granddaughter, and a house fire that destroyed his home. He died of natural causes in 2020, nearly two decades after his win.

His cautionary tale is resurfacing now as Powerball officially launched ticket sales in the United Kingdom for the first time last week, marking the lottery's first-ever expansion outside the U.S. According to NPR, the change came through an agreement between the Multi-State Lottery Association and Allwyn UK, allowing U.K. players to contribute to, and win, the same shared jackpot as U.S. players, under the same astronomical odds of 1 in 292.2 million.

The expansion has also drawn attention to a curious quirk between how the two countries advertise their prizes. According to Forbes, the U.S. version of Powerball advertises the jackpot's full pre-tax value, even though no winner actually receives that amount once federal and state taxes are applied. The U.K., by contrast, advertises the jackpot's net, after-tax value upfront, meaning the same shared prize pool appears as a dramatically smaller number in the U.K. than it does in the U.S., despite both offering the same actual payout.

U.K. players will also face a different structure than their American counterparts in one other key way: while U.S. winners can choose between a lump-sum payout or a 30-year annuity, U.K. winners are required to take their winnings spread out over 30 years, with no lump-sum option available.

As jackpots begin building toward potentially record-breaking territory with a larger international player pool, Whittaker's story remains one of the most frequently cited warnings about what a massive windfall can do to someone's life.

The Four Seasons were one of the best-selling musical groups of the 1960s, known for songs such as "Sherry,” “Big Girls  Don’t Cry” and “Rag Doll,” all featuring the falsetto vocals of lead singer Frankie Valli.

But in 1975, the legendary group almost had a lead singer switch for one of their biggest songs. As the Four Seasons struggled for a hit, Valli was considering a solo career. That’s when a promising new song came their way—and Valli wanted in.

The song was “Who Loves You.” Penned by Bob Gaudio and Judy Parker, the track featured soaring harmonies and a radio-friendly blend of soft rock, disco, and soul. But the original cut didn’t feature Valli’s vocals. Instead, Four Seasons member Don Ciccone recorded the song.

In an interview with Classic Bands, Ciccone recalled that the plan was to give Valli a solo career and record the Four Seasons as its own entity, à la Diana Ross and the Supremes.

“So Bob Gaudio writes the song ‘Who Loves You,’ and he wants to shoot for a record deal with Warner Bros.,” Ciccone shared. “The Four Seasons hadn't had a hit in six years. After he wrote the song, we recorded it as The Four Seasons.”

Ciccone revealed that the group initially recorded the background vocals but not the lead vocals because Valli wasn’t available.

“There was some procrastination on Frankie's part,” he recalled. “He went to England. Bob Gaudio couldn't get him to put his lead voice down on the song.”

Valli reportedly told Gaudio he wouldn’t “have the time” to learn the song until he came back to the United States, but Warner Bros, pushed for the recording.

“So Bob asked me if I would put down the lead vocal on the song, which I did,” Ciccone explained. “I did it as a reference vocal for Frankie to learn the song. Bob wound up showing it to Warner Bros. with my vocal on it. Warner Bros. not only liked the song, giving the Four Seasons a record deal at that very moment, but they told Bob that whoever this guy is, and Bob said ‘It's one of The Four Seasons,’ and they said ‘Great, 'cause he's the new lead singer for The Four Seasons and we're going to give Frankie's own solo career."

Once Valli got wind of the situation, he was not happy.

“Frankie got so annoyed with that decision by Warner Bros. that he insisted on taking my voice off of that song and putting his own on and discarding his own offer of a solo career,” Ciccone added. “So, I was on cloud 9 for about an hour and a half and then found out he had taken my voice off.  … He didn't want to pass the torch, pass the baton.”

Gaudio had Valli’s voice in mind when he wrote “Who Loves You.”

In an interview with Popdose, the songwriter shared, “Frankie had a band that were the Four Seasons he traveled with, and he was always raving about how good they were. So when I had to start writing, I wrote with that band in mind, knowing that Frankie’s love would still be going the singles route and doing the solo stuff.“

“Who Loves You” ultimately became a massive hit and marked a chart comeback for the Four Seasons, paving the way for their biggest hit, "December 1963 (Oh What a Night)."

On November 15, 1975, "Who Loves You" went to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains a beloved fan favorite more than 50 years later.

Linda Ronstadt recorded "Long Long Time" in 1970 when she was just 23 years old. The song was written by Gary White and peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. For 53 years, it was largely forgotten. Then in January 2023, HBO's The Last of Usused it three times in a single episode, and Spotify reported a 4,900% increase in streams within one hour. Ronstadt can no longer sing. She sold the masters two years before the boom and received none of the windfall. She said she was glad for Gary.

The song didn't start with Ronstadt. It started backstage at a Greenwich Village coffeehouse. Guitarist David Bromberg brought Ronstadt to the Café Au Go Go to see Gary White perform alongside singer-songwriter Paul Siebel. After the show, Ronstadt went backstage to meet White. He'd already packed up his guitar. He took it back out of its case, sat down and played "Long Long Time" for her on the spot. "I told Gary I wanted to record it immediately," she later recalled.

Released in June 1970 on Silk Purse, the song spent 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Ronstadt a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance in 1971. Then, it waited. For more than 50 years it waited.

Craig Mazin, executive producer of The Last of Us, spent hours looking for the right song for Episode 3. He texted Seth Rudetsky, a Broadway music expert on SiriusXM. Rudetsky responded in two seconds: "Linda Ronstadt, Long Long Time." Mazin said: "I was like, there it is. That's it."

The episode used the song three times. Bill and Frank discover a Linda Ronstadt songbook at an old piano. Nick Offerman sings the opening lines to the song: "Love will abide, take things in stride, sounds like good advice but there's no one at my side." In a story about surviving the end of the world, those words hit differently than they did in 1970. Within one hour of the episode airing, Spotify reported a 4,900% increase in US streams.

The Song About Enduring Love Endured Longer Than Anyone Expected

Ronstadt is no longer able to sing. She got none of the money. And she said she was glad.

In 2011 she was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain disorder similar to Parkinson's with no known cure. She retired from performing. In March 2021, she sold her master recordings to Irving Azoff's Iconic Artist Group. When the streaming boom happened two years later, she received none of it. In a 2022 interview with Maria Shriver, she said she could "sing in my brain" but not aloud.

When asked about the resurgence, her response said everything. "My first reaction was that I was really glad for Gary White, who will get a windfall from this."

The Last of Us did for "Long Long Time" what Stranger Things did for Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" in 2022: it gave a forgotten classic to millions of listeners who'd never heard of it. But the Ronstadt story has something the Bush story doesn't. Ronstadt can't sing anymore. She got nothing. She said she was glad.

The song about enduring love found its largest audience when its singer could only hear it in her head.
