‘Outlander’ Author Diana Gabaldon Breaks Down Season 8's Wedding, Baby — And a Devastating Bear Attack (Exclusive)
The second episode of Season 8 of Outlander is one of both happy news and sad news. The happy news is that Henry Grey (Harry Jarvis) and Mercy Woodcock (Gloria Obianyo) marry and Ian (John Bell) and Rachel (IzzyMeikle-Small) have a baby boy.
But then tragedy strikes Fraser’s Ridge when the women are out gathering berries and Amy (Joanne Thomson) is attacked by a bear and dies.
Joanne Thomson as Amy McCallumCourtesy STARZ
It’s definitely an episode that shows life goes on no matter.
“If we're looking for something thematic, I think it's more a meditation on the fragility and chanciness of life—especially in unsettled (in all senses of the word) times,” Outlander creator and bestselling author Diana Gabaldon tells Parade. “And we always have unsettled times, don't you think? It's just that some are a whole lot more unsettled than others (for example, the daily news this past week...). Still, the only answer is to hold on to love, protect your family and neighbors, and face what may be coming with a whole heart.”
And when it comes to holding on, William (Charles Vandervaart) is definitely holding on to hope in this episode. At Henry and Mercy’s wedding, Lord John (David Berry) informs William that his cousin Ben (Alex Bhat) has died. As William was an only child, his cousins, especially Ben, are like siblings to him, and he refuses to accept his cousin’s death, so he goes in search of him or at least his body. He needs closure.
“Ah, William and Ben,” Gabaldon comments. “Well, speaking of a whole heart, William has rather mixed feelings about the possibility of Ben's death. On the one hand, he does love and admire his elder cousin and is deeply grieved by the notion that Ben is gone. Also, this is an event that affects the whole family, and while Ben's death is/would be a tragedy to all of them. Any uncertainty about it will prolong the emotional upset, and also (perhaps) affect the structure of the family: Ben is his father's (Hal's) heir; the next duke of Pardloe. IF he's dead, AND his marriage to Amaranthus [Carla Woodcock] is legal, then the next Duke of Pardloe is a small baby of unknown family. If the marriage is NOT legal, the next Duke would be Ben's brother, Adam. Ergo, the family's in more of a tizzy than just grief at Ben's presumed loss.
“And...on the other hand (William's)... he's very much attracted by Amaranthus, Ben's wife...or, possibly, his widow. In other words, he has both familial duty and a strong private reason driving him to find out whether Ben is truly dead.”
And then there’s the matter of Charles Cunningham (Kieran Bew), who took it upon himself to track down and kill the bear that killed Amy. Jamie wanted Amy's son to take part in the killing of the bear to have some closure, but thanks to Cunningham that wasn't a possibility. They both discover they are Lodge members, so they hold a Lodge meeting. Jamie wants to strengthen the ties that bind the residents of Fraser’s Ridge together for the greater good of all, but Cunningham talks about his son, who was killed in battle, coming back to life for an instant and telling him he would see him again in 7 years, so Cunningham tells the Lodge members that he believes the soul isn't killed by death and that he plans to use the 7 more years he has to live to good purpose.
Related: Outlander’s Caitríona Balfe Says Final Season Was Her Most Difficult Yet — Here’s Why (Exclusive)
Afterwards, Jamie says, "A man who is called by God is one thing, a man who thinks he cannot die is quite another." Does Jamie suspect that Cunningham had an ulterior motive in making that speech?
“The conflict between Jamie and Charles Cunningham is superficially simple: Cunningham is an openly declared Loyalist (as well as an ex-officer of the British army--i.e., he knows how to fight, and to command men), and Jamie is a declared Patriot,” Gabaldon explains. “On the other hand, Jamie's land was given to him by the (Loyalist) Governor (this is a much more complicated issue in the book, but it's not something the show could handle, so we'll skip it), who might have second thoughts now that Jamie's declared himself as a Patriot by fighting with/for Washington at Monmouth. On the next level down, Cunningham and Jamie are about to embark on a personal struggle for leadership (and possibly ownership) of the Ridge itself. Many of Jamie's tenants aren't Patriots, or are not politically oriented--they just want to own their households and not die in battle or be run off. Who has the best chance of protecting them?
“No, I don't think Jamie suspects Cunningham of ulterior motives in telling the story about his son; what would be the profit to Cunningham, in having the people on the Ridge think it's possible he won't die for seven years? Following a man who's temporarily immortal won't improve your own chances in battle.
Related:Sam Heughan Reflects on How 'Outlander' Has Changed Everything (Exclusive)
“Jamie means what he says to Claire [Caitríona Balfe]: a man who truly believes he can't be killed is genuinely dangerous, because he'll take risks that a man with a care for his own life wouldn't.
“Some of Jamie's tenants are Loyalists (Hiram Crombie, for one), and while they owe Jamie a lot, some of them--especially the newer arrivals, who don't even know him personally--may well hesitate when push comes to shove (and that it will, is becoming more obvious by the day).
“On the other hand, I adore Elspeth Cunningham [Frances Tomelty]. The more so, as the show writers kept her character and dialogue from the book entirely intact.”
Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzieCourtesy STARZ
On another note, I commented to Gabaldon how much I’ve come to love how Jamie and Roger (Richard Rankin])have become confidantes after their horrible beginning when Jamie beat him nearly to death – and happily there’s more of that to come.
“Oh, ditto on Roger and Jamie's evolving friendship,” she added. “He's definitely the son of Jamie's house (and Jamie's right-hand man) as the story progresses through the later books.”
Outlander will air new episodes each Friday at midnight ET on the STARZ app, all STARZ streaming and on-demand platforms; and at 8 p.m. ET/PT/7 Central on the linear network.

"I mean, I thought there was two people myself," Quaid said during the new interview, expressing his amazement at Lohan's ability to flip-flop back and forth between her two characters, who not only had entirely different personalities, but one also spoke with an English accent.

"She was amazing," he added of Lohan.
During the same interview, Quaid also spoke highly of his experience working with Richardson, calling her the late actress an "incredible person" and an "amazing actor."
Richardson died unexpectedly at the age of 45 in March 2009 after sustaining a head injury in a skiing accident. All these years later, Quaid said his heart still "breaks every time" he watches Richardson's scenes from The Parent Trap.
"If there’s anybody I’d ever want to work with again, it’d be her," Quaid stated.

Controversial ‘DWTS’ Mirrorball Winner Asked to Fill Hosting Spot After Tom Bergeron Shakeup
A controversial Dancing With the Stars champion revealed he was offered a hosting role on the ABC series after Tom Bergeron left the show.
Bergeron appeared on The Bobby Bones Show, where the Season 27 mirrorball winner revealed that he was approached by producers to host the series.
The former host told Bones, "Before they went to Tyra Banks to replace me, they went to you." The radio personality responded, "Yes but in full transparency, I was told you were leaving."
Bergeron laughed, "I had to, they fired me." Bones responded, "That was not the conversation they had with me. It was, 'Hey, Tom is leaving at the end of this season. Would you want to come and host 'Dancing With the Stars?'"

The mirrorball winner continued, "Again, I respected you so much I asked, 'Hey, can I talk to Tom and get advice on this decision?' They were like, 'contractually we don't think you should do that.'"
"Then it didn't work out and I was on a driving range one day and then I see a tweet come through, that Tyra Banks signed on as host and I went, 'what?'"
The men also buried the hatchet after Bergeron told Parade his surprise over Bones' win alongside pro-Sharna Burgess. Bones expressed his hurt by sending his mirrorball back to ABC.

"The fact that it hurt your feelings and that you sent your trophy back, I felt terrible about that."

Fans responded to Bergeron's apology. "It’s takes a strong and decent man to apologize especially to someone’s face and in a public way. Hopefully everyone can heal and move forward. Sending love to both of you guys," wrote one fan.
A second Instagram user penned, "A long overdue apology, I'm happy he manned up and made things right. Love you and the show."

Bruce Willis' Wife Shares Major Update About Her Next Chapter Amid Actor's Ongoing Health Battle
Bruce Willis' wife, Emma Heming Willis, has shared some big news. On Thursday, March 12, Heming Willis announced the launch of Emma & Bruce Willis Fund for Dementia Research and Caregiver Support.
"This journey has opened my eyes to the realities so many families face when a loved one is living with frontotemporal dementia," Heming Willis said, according to People magazine. "I believe deeply in the importance of supporting research while also showing up for the caregivers who carry so much every day."
"Through this fund, my hope is to help deepen understanding of FTD and ensure families facing it feel seen, supported, and less alone. Bruce has always led with generosity and heart, and I know he would be proud to see this effort helping families facing this disease," she added.
The announcement comes four years after Willis was first diagnosed with aphasia (his specific diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia came months later).
Since her husband's diagnosis, Heming Willis stepped into the role of caregiver almost overnight. Experiencing firsthand the emotional weight, stress and uncertainty that come with supporting a loved one through frontotemporal dementia, she has also faced the quiet grief that can accompany watching someone change as the disease progresses. Those experiences ultimately inspired Heming Willis to look for ways to support other families navigating the same journey and to remind caregivers that they are not alone.
In September 2025, Heming Willis released her book, The Unexpected Journey, written to help support and guide other caregivers navigating similar experiences.
Willis will turn 71 on March 19.

20 Years Ago, ‘King of Queens’ Star Pulled an On-Camera Prank That Actually Aired on TV
Patton Oswalt pulled a prank while filming The King Of Queens—and the scene made it into an episode that first aired 20 years ago.
The actor, who played Spence Olchin on the CBSsitcom from 1998 to 2007, told The Howard Stern Showthat he loved working on the long-running comedy series that also starred Kevin Jamesand Leah Remini, but that producers were sometimes pranksters.
“King of Queens was a blast to do,” Oswalt said. “All of the writers were stoners. They were always pulling weird pranks. There’s the one episode where they dared me to stand still in a scene. There’s a scene where I’m in it, I don’t have any lines. They went, ‘Do not move the entire scene. See if we can get away with it, see if anyone catches it.’ And there’s a scene I am completely immobile through the whole thing.”
The motionless moment appears in the opening scene of the April 10, 2006, King of Queens episode “Emotional Rollercoaster” as Doug Heffernan (James) opens presents during his 40thbirthday party.
In the iconic scene, Oswalt stands completely still behind James, who is seated on a couch. The actor continues his mannequin impersonation even when the scene moves into the kitchen, where he can be seen through a window.
Oswalt recalled the scene five years later in a post to Twitter, now X. “Forgot I did this. I stayed absolutely motionless in the opening scene from a KING OF QUEENS episode,” he wrote.
The post caused a new legion of fans to rewatch the King of Queens scene and catch Oswalt standing frozen. The scene has since spawned multiple discussion threads online.
“When they go into the kitchen he's STILL DOING IT. The cameraman even seems to notice it and moves the shot over a bit so he's totally in the frame,” one fan wrote on Reddit.
“Ok, he got me when you could still see him standing like a board from the kitchen,” another agreed.
“Wow, can't believe no one on the show caught it or cared enough to change it. Props to him I'd consider this a huge achievement as a comedian on TV,” a third fan wrote of Oswalt.
Guy Fieri's Next-Level Mac & Cheese Is a One-Way Ticket to Flavortown
Guy Fieriis known worldwide for his infectious freewheeling spirit, laugh-out-loud catchphrases and the success of his Flavortown empire, which is made up of restaurants, Emmy Award-winning TV shows, New York Times best-selling cookbooks and, of course, Donkey Sauce.
On a personal note, my cousin and I have been strangely obsessed with the Guy for years. We often send each other his hilarious memes and his many intriguing recipes. So you can imagine my surprise and delight when I ran across Guy Fieri's Mac Daddy Mac n' Cheese recipe.

How to Make Guy Fieri's Mac Daddy Mac n' CheeseStart by preheating your oven to 350°F. Wrap the shallots and garlic in a tiny foil pouch, drizzling them with olive oil before you wrap them up. Roast for 20 to 30 minutes then carefully remove from the foil and chop them up.
Next, dice and cook your bacon, reserving 1 tablespoon of bacon fat. Sauté the cooked shallots and garlic in the reserved bacon fat, then add the flour and cook for one more minute. Whisk in the heavy cream and thyme and cook until the mixture is reduced by a third.
Add the cheeses and stir until they melt and the sauce is nice and creamy. Season the cheese sauce with salt and pepper, gently stir in the cooked pasta, and transfer the mac and cheese to a 9-by-13-inch casserole dish.
In a small bowl, combine the bacon, panko, parsley and melted butter. Sprinkle that over the mac and cheese and bake uncovered at 350°F for 20 to 25 minutes.

What I Thought of Guy Fieri's Mac Daddy Mac n' Cheese Making cheese sauceCourtesy of Jessica Wrubel
This truly was the Platonic ideal of mac and cheese. It had so much to love: a smooth cheese sauce, smokiness from the bacon, and an herbal richness from the fresh thyme steeped in cream. The combination of the pepper jack and cheddar cheese wasn't too rich and the herby panko topping added a great crunch that really took the dish over the top.
What I'm trying to say is that Guy Fieri's Mac Daddy Mac n' Cheese was the ultimate trip to Flavortown. Was it a messy recipe? Yes! Did I have to do a ton of dishes afterward? Also yes! But it was well worth it, and I would make this dish again. If there were a way I could virtually send a pan of it to my cousin, I would.

Tips for Making Guy Fieri's Mac Daddy Mac n' Cheese Finished Mac Daddy Mac n' CheeseCourtesy of Jessica Wrubel
- Shred your own cheeses. Pre-shredded cheese, while convenient, contain added ingredients that can prevent the cheese from melting properly. By buying blocks of cheese and shredding it yourself your mac and cheese will be the creamiest it can be. Pro tip: If you have a food processor, this is the time to bust out those shredding disks.
- Choose your own cheese adventure. Guy says to use pepper jack and cheddar but doesn't specify which type of cheddar, so I grabbed a block of yellow medium cheddar as well as a sharp white to vary the flavor a bit. Feel free to play around with different types of cheese.
- Take it easy. Making a smooth cheese sauce that's not gritty requires adding your cream or milk (as well as your cheese later on) on low heat, very slowly while whisking frequently. Having patience here will pay off in the end.

The End of the ‘Rushed’ River Cruise? This New AmaWaterways Upgrade Finally Lets You Stay the Night in Paris
River cruising is undergoing a major vibe shift for 2026, trading the "marathon" pace of traditional sightseeing for a style that feels more like a city break on the water. On March 12, AmaWaterways officially launched its City Escapes program, a new collection of sailings specifically designed to give travelers the one thing usually missing from a cruise: time.
The move comes as travelers increasingly push back against "overtourism" in Europe’s major capitals. By scheduling these departures during quieter travel periods and redesigning the itineraries to include overnight stays and 24-hour stops in hubs like Paris,Amsterdam and Vienna, AmaWaterways is betting on the "gift of time" as the ultimate luxury.
“City Escapes is about experiencing Europe at its most authentic,” said Catherine Powell, who took over as CEO of AmaWaterways in July 2025. “We designed these journeys for travelers who want more time to explore the museums, enjoy local cuisine and walk historic streets without feeling rushed or crowded.”
Related: The Most Anticipated River Cruise Launches in 2026—And It's a Creative Masterpiece
View this post on Instagram What’s New for the 2026-2027 SeasonThe program is rolling out across Europe’s three most iconic rivers, with experiences that allow guests to ditch the typical "tourist" label:
- The Seine (Paris & Normandy): Highlights include extended stays in Paris with "after-hours" vibes in Le Marais, along with deeper dives into Rouen’s medieval history and cider tastings in the harbor town of Honfleur.
- The Rhine (Amsterdam & Strasbourg): Travelers get a full day at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and evening "onshore dinners" in Strasbourg that highlight the city’s unique French-German culinary blend.
- The Danube (Vienna & Budapest): The focus shifts to cultural immersion, including dinner and concerts at the House of Strauss in Vienna and guided hikes to Gellért Hill in Budapest for panoramic views away from the crowds.
To sweeten the deal for early birds, AmaWaterways is also launching a City Escapes promotion for bookings made through June 30, 2026. Travelers can snag up to $1,000 in savings per stateroom, plus a free upgrade and onboard credit.
This pivot toward slower travel aligns with a broader 2026 cruise trend where "shoulder season" sailings are becoming the new peak. As major ports like Amsterdam move to cap river cruise calls to reduce crowding, these "less is more" itineraries are quickly becoming the smartest way to see Europe without the stress of the summer rush.

Kevin Hart’s Personal Announcement Sparks Wave of Reactions
Kevin Hart is having a proud dad moment after celebrating his son, Hendrix Hart’s, major milestone.
The 46-year-old comedian has received numerous accolades over his decades-long career in entertainment, but it feels different seeing his son thrive and make a name for himself in sports.
In an Instagram update, the Jumanji star congratulated his eldest son on making it to the track team.
The 18-year-old senior recently announced his commitment to the University of Tennessee, where he will compete at the collegiate level.
The post not only showcased his eldest in the official uniform but also included a heartfelt message expressing his joy and pride.

“Proud of you, son…. The sky is the limit!!!!! Continue to raise your personal bar…. I can’t wait to see what you do next!!!! We all love you champ…,” he captioned the post.
The Grammy-nominated actor’s personal announcement sparked fans and celebrities alike to send their congratulations.
View this post on Instagram“Yessir, nephew!!!!” NBA superstar LeBron James said.
Internet personality and fitness trainer Ron Boss Everline commented, “Proud of you, my guy.”
2004 Olympic Champion Justin Gatlin wrote, “Heck yeah, Hendrix go Vols!”
While many reacted with fire emojis to show their support, others jokingly brought up a story from his early stand-up routines, where he described his son as clumsy and known for bizarre antics like climbing into the oven.
“This the son who used to get in the oven? I feel old as hell now,” a commenter said.
“D–n he got his grandparent genes... because where did that height come from?” a fan jokingly asked.
The standout track and field athlete has set a new school record at Sierra Canyon for the 200m dash with a time of 21.35 seconds, ranking him 26th in California during his junior season.
Furthermore, Hendrix Hart also earned the title of Great Southwest Classic Champion in the 200m and finished as the runner-up in the 2025 CIF Southern Section Division Finals.
Aside from the track star, the Me Time star has three other children, including his eldest daughter Heaven Leigh Hart, whom he shares with ex-wife Torrei Hart.
He also has two younger kids, eight-year-old Kenzo Kash Hart and five-year-old Kaori Mai Hart, with his second wife, Eniko Parrish Hart.
In a 2025 interview with PEOPLE, the award-winning comedian expressed the goal that he aimed for as a father, which is to be "best example possible" for his kids.
"I think as parents we all give crash courses and what we deem to be education or great direction,” he said, adding, “You can only hope that your kids are picking up as much as you're putting down. I can just hope and pray that the example that I think I'm being is the example that I really am being and all my time and all my energy that I'm throwing to them on a day-to-day basis is not going unnoticed."
Judging by his support for Hendrix Hart, the Central Intelligence star appears to take that role to heart.

15 Years Ago, A Female-Driven Comedy Became One of the Biggest Surprise Hits
For Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, writing the script for their iconic comedy, Bridesmaids, was the easy part. But coming up with a catchy title? That took some trial and error. At a press conference for the film, Wiig joked that they thought about calling it Naked Boobs & Guns to lure male audiences. "It didn't have any one of those things so we changed it," she told CineMovie.
Even director Judd Apatow's admission that it was initially called Maid of Honor doesn't sound right to those of us who have rewatched the film countless times. As we mark the 15th anniversary of Bridesmaids' SXSW premiere, it's hard to imagine a more fitting title.
Bridesmaids centers around Annie (Wiig), an out-of-work pastry chef whose best friend, Lilian (Maya Rudolph), is getting married. After agreeing to be her maid of honor, she meets the rest of the bridesmaids: Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey), Becca (Ellie Kemper), Megan (Melissa McCarthy), and Helen (Rose Byrne). She quickly realizes that she has a rival in Helen, who believes she deserves to be maid of honor.
While Annie is navigating an awkward love life, a disturbing living situation, and a depressing job, she keeps finding herself at odds with Helen, who's determined to upstage her. All of the uncomfortable, gross, and funny moments add up to one of the most hilarious female-driven films ever made, and one of the most successful.
Worldwide, Bridesmaids grossed $289 million on a budget of $32.5 million. But according to Wiig, she thought the film was going to be a dud, thanks to Universal. "After opening weekend, they were like, 'Well, we tried," she told Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast.
Feig told Variety that the studio told him the film would have to make at least $20 million opening weekend, or it would "be considered a failure." He recalled having dinner with McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone, as the numbers came in.
"The texts [came in]: ’20 million. 21. 22.’ So we all got in the car," he said. "We went down to the Arclight Cinema and it was packed. It was the greatest moment of our lives.”
The massive success of the film singlehandedly changed the narrative around female-led films, with a very real and relatable story about female friendships.
Pizza Hut Makes a Change to a Popular Menu Item for the First Time in Over a Decade
March is the unofficial month of pizza.
There’s no better time to put in a pizza order than while Lent is in full-swing and March Madness is around the corner.
If you’re avoiding meat on Fridays and don’t fancy fish, your go-to is likely pizza. And nothing fuels a game day watch party—regardless of size—like the cheesy and cozy warmth of pizza.
It only makes sense that Pizza Hut is not only revamping a popular menu choice for the first time in over a decade, but it also comes with a new deal that you’d be foolish to miss out on.
Pizza Hut has announced a game day deal for just $10 that will guarantee no one will leave your watch parties with a hungry belly.
Included in that meal deal is a Pizza Hut favorite with a new recipe for its beloved crust. Because honestly, the crust can make or break your pizza.

"Missy Elliott dropped 'Get Ur Freak On' just in time to rule the radio in the long, hot summer of 2001—and nothing was ever the same," Rolling Stone wrote. "It was more than just the latest mind-bending Missy smash—it was a challenge, a dare, the sound of Miss E and Timbaland defying everyone else to keep up with the future or get left behind."
“Get Ur Freak On” is one of many collaborations between Elliott and famed producer Timbaland, who also happens be from her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia. The pair first worked together on the 1997 hit “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," and released numerous hip-hop/R&B hits in the late '90s and early 2000s.
The song was groundbreaking at the time for its blend of hip-hop and bhangra, its unforgettable hook, and the futuristic style that would come to define Elliott and Timbaland’s work together.
"It was a nonstop freak manifesto that made the musical future sound limitless," the outlet continued. "And after more than two decades, 'Get Ur Freak On' still sounds like the future— everything vibrant and inventive and cool about 21st-century pop is in here somewhere. Holla, forever."

2000s Boy Band Makes Major Comeback on Tour 23 Years After No. 1 Hit
Boy bands are having a major moment again—and Millennials are enjoying the much-needed time travel back to a simpler era of life, thanks to some of the songs that served as the soundtrack of our child/teenhood.
Last month, iconic 2000s R&B group B2K kicked off their long-awaited co-headlining Boys 4 Life Tour with Bow Wow. Joined by a lineup of talent with a catalog of memorable throwback hits, the quartet—comprising Omarion, J-Boog, Lil' Fizz, and Raz-B—is seeing a resurgence in popularity after putting their past differences aside and officially reuniting (with confirmed new music on the way...).
The production—also featuring Pretty Ricky,Amerie, Waka Flocka, B5, Yung Joc, Dem Franchize Boyz, and Crime Mob—is in celebration of their 25th anniversary, and marks over two decades since the very first time both musical acts hit the stage at 2002's Scream Tour II, a cultural occurrence that still stands as a core memory for longtime supporters.
Photo Credit: Victoria FordThe tenth tour stop at Washington, D.C.'s Capital One Arena on Sunday, March 8, was lit up with fans' excitement at witnessing the boy band taking the stage together once again. Performing collectively and individually, giving each member time to shine in the spotlight and showcase their own talent, the singers took the audience back through their catalog, as concert attendees sang along to each track line by line.
The group's set highlighted a string of hits, including "Why I Love You," "Gots Ta Be" and their party anthem, "Bump Bump Bump," which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 2003. 23 years later, the boys have still got it, fully engaging the crowd with their stage presence, smooth moves, and polished vocals. Over two decades may have passed since they first began, but on stage, they still didn't skip a beat.
Originally announced in November 2025, the 28-city concert series, powered by Black Promoters Collective, runs through Sunday, April 19, where it's slated to wrap up in Hampton, Va. Tickets are available online now.

The 'Sudoku' Packing Hack I Wish I Knew Sooner
Something that I firmly believe is that you only need a carry-on while traveling, no matter where you’re going or how long you’ll be gone. To many people, that might sound absolutely unachievable. When you look at the logistics of packing light, however, you’ll see that it’s completely worth it. By skipping baggage drop and claim, having less to lug around when going from place to place, and omitting the fear of losing your belongings mid-transit, you’ll open up a way of traveling that is more minimalist and stress-free.
I have lived out of a large suitcase for a year on a Broadway tour, so if any trip is less than a year–you will only ever see me with a carry-on! I’ve also worked as a cruise ship performer, where I lived in incredibly small cabins onboard. Ultimately, I’ve learned all of the secrets on how to pack strategically, both with what you pack and how you pack. Although I have my favorite carry-on tips and tricks, I’m also always learning new ones and trying them out. Recently, I learned one that I’m absolutely obsessed with.

Use The 'Sudoku' 9-Pieces Packing Method @mindfulmomeditIt’s honestly life changing ✨ The 3x3 packing rule ✈️ 3 tops. 3 bottoms. 3 layers. Everything mixes with everything. This is how you pack a capsule wardrobe that actually works. Minimal. Intentional. Zero stress. Save this for your next trip. #capsulewardrobe #travelstyle #packwithme #minimalstyle #intentionalstyle
♬ BAD BUNNY MONACO SLOWED - allaboutmusicIn a TikTok video created by Patrica of @mindfulmomedit, an account that focuses on capsule wardrobes and minimalism, she shared a packing tip that could help a lot of people with using only a carry-on. This method is to simply pack 9 total pieces of clothing, similar to a Sudoku square. Within these 9 pieces, you will have three tops, three bottoms, and three layerable pieces. This can get you more than 7 outfits in total–as long as you make sure each item can match with each other.
This method creates a tiny capsule wardrobe for your trip. You should be able to mix and match each item of clothing to create a large variety of outfits. Patricia then explains that this helps you pack extremely light, but it also helps you look more put together while traveling as well. Choosing clothing pieces that are simple and classic can give you an elevated and timeless look, while also keeping things practical for traveling with just a carry-on.

How To Mindfully Pack AccessoriesOne thing that helps to bring a capsule-type packing method to life is accessories. if you accessorize differently or wear different shoes, that can change up the look of a shirt or pants, making it seem different even if you wear it twice. Items like necklaces, bracelets, sunglasses, purses, hair pieces are easy to pack, but can completely transform the look of an outfit all together.
As for shoes, I usually bring three pairs of shoes on my trips. I wear the bulkiest pair (usually a comfortable yet stylish sneaker) while I go from place to place, and then pack two other pairs of shoes that are appropriate to wherever I’m traveling to. Of course, all three shoes should go with every possible outfit in the capsule wardrobe. Then, to help keep things compact, I sometimes will pack accessories inside of the shoes to save space. Jewelry can go in small pouches, which can easily be tucked into a pair of high heels, loafers, or flats.
With this method, you will have a carry-on that isn’t busting at the seams, you won’t have to stress about creating outfits that match, and you will have fun accessories to liven up each look. It’s a win-win all around–a light suitcase paired with stylish looks. What more could you want?
