At the height of the Disney Renaissance in the ‘90s, there was nothing more thrilling than getting film developed after a visit to Walt Disney World Resort.

Disposable cameras were all the rage, and I would race home to my local photo lab, hopeful that my photos would be as magical as I'd imagined. The roving photographers in the parks also shot on 35mm film, so even those images had to be developed and picked up later in the day.

Today, smartphones and the Disney PhotoPass system are both incredible: instant access to every shot, in quality I could only have dreamed of as a kid. As a journalist and mom, I'm grateful for both.

But there's another part of me that longs for a digital detox—for a time when I wasn't tethered to my phone. I wanted my kids to experience a Disney family vacation the way I remember it from the '90s: screen-free and full of presence.

Last week, we finally did it. Here's what worked, and why I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

For this trip, I wanted to mirror the type of vacation that we would have taken in the ‘90s. That meant staying in a classic Disney Resort Hotel and visiting a Disney water park, just like families did when multi-day passes often included water park admission.

As luck would have it, one of my all-time favorite Disney resorts opened in the early '90s: Disney's Port Orleans Resort—Riverside. And right now, Disney water park admission is free on arrival day for all resort hotel guests—so we took a Disney bus straight to Typhoon Lagoon, where we spent the day tackling water slides and floating in the lazy river.

The following day, we planned the kind of classic park-hopping itinerary I remember from childhood: a few favorite rides at Magic Kingdom, a Monorail trip to EPCOT for dinner and a couple more attractions, then back to Magic Kingdom for the fireworks and nighttime parade. Screen-free, the whole way.

Disney’s water parks have always been a phone-free space for our family (because really, who wants to carry a phone around a water park?). But this time I also did something I hadn’t done since the ‘90s: I bought a waterproof disposable camera to capture a few moments at the park. It felt surprisingly freeing to take photos with absolutely no idea what they'd look like.

For our theme park day, I also picked up a Camp Snap screen-free digital camera, which works like an old-school film camera but holds up to 500 images on a single charge. I didn't test it before the trip, so we decided we’d figure it out by taking photos, exactly like the old days.

And then my husband and I did something that felt almost radical: just inside the Magic Kingdom gates, we rented a $10 locker and locked our phones inside. For the entire day and evening. And it was wonderful.

Going phone-free feels manageable at Disney World in a way it might not be elsewhere, and that’s by design.

Disney is renowned for its safety and its cast members, who are everywhere and always happy to help. Paper maps are available at every park entrance, making navigation easy without a screen. And Disney's legendary attention to detail means there's something to look at around every corner, including many things you may miss if you're staring at your phone.

In the interactive queue for Peter Pan's Flight, we walked through the Darling children’s nursery and watched our shadows come to life on the wall. Tinker Bell was causing mischief, and my kids loved it. It was the kind of moment I didn’t think to try to photograph, yet it was a beautiful family memory that we shared together.

One modern shortcut did help make our phone-free day seamless: we each wore a Disney MagicBand+ linked to our hotel and park reservations, so we could scan into the parks and our hotel room without ever waiting in a ticket line. Our bands also linked ride photos directly to my Disney account for viewing later, and the kids love MagicBands because they light up and interact with park statues and rides.

Since I still wanted great vacation photos, I purchased the Disney PhotoPass Memory Maker in advance, which granted us unlimited shots with professional photographers stationed throughout the parks. It felt like the most '90s approach possible: have the photos taken, but don't see them until after the trip. No obsessing, no do-overs, just a fun surprise waiting for us at home.

Once inside each park, we picked up maps and used them to navigate. Rather than checking an app for showtimes, we simply asked cast members—which turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip. Instead of a packed, minute-by-minute schedule, we moved freely through the parks and stumbled into magic as it happened. Two of my favorite moments included catching the Dapper Dans performing on Main Street, U.S.A., and the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade.

I was unprepared for just how much my children would love the concept of an analog vacation. My 9-year-old, especially, embraced the challenge of navigating by park map and quickly became our default guide, leading us from land to land with enthusiasm.

My kids also adored using the Camp Snap camera to take their own photos; I handed it over and let them take as many photos as they wanted. Unlike the '90s, the generous storage limit meant I didn’t worry about wasting film.

And they loved the classic attractions, all of which existed in some form during the ‘90s. At the Magic Kingdom, our adventures included Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (formerly Splash Mountain), Peter Pan’s Flight, “it’s a small world,” Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress and the Walt Disney World Railroad. At EPCOT, we journeyed through time on Spaceship Earth and then headed to the World Showcase for Frozen Ever After (formerly Maelstrom) in Norway, the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros in Mexico and a delicious Oktoberfest-style dinner at the Biergarten Restaurant in Germany.

I Stopped Documenting the Vacation and Started Having One Tiana's Bayou Adventure is one of the most popular rides at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom.

Here's what I didn't expect: without my phone, I stopped worrying about how I looked.

When we all got soaked following a front-row ride on Tiana's Bayou Adventure, the eye makeup that I'd so carefully applied that morning was suddenly gone. And instead of feeling the need to fix it, I laughed and kept going. It sounds small, but it wasn't.

As a journalist, I photograph everything. But on this trip, something shifted. It felt like a vacation from a different era—one where I was fully present, soaking it all in rather than documenting it for later.

At one point on Tiana's Bayou Adventure, we rounded a bend and I spotted a quote from Tiana's father (from Disney's The Princess and the Frog) emblazoned on a water tower: "Never, ever lose sight of what's really important." Those words resonated deeply with me on this trip, and they embody the mindset I want to take with me on future vacations.

Use the App Before You Go. The My Disney Experience app is an incredibly useful planning tool for making dining reservations, checking showtimes and booking Lightning Lanes in advance. Even if you won't use it during your trip, it's worth a thorough look beforehand.

Try a Disney MagicBand+. It may not have existed in the '90s, but it's the ultimate phone replacement at Disney. It works as your room key, park ticket, PhotoPass identifier and Lightning Lane access—all without ever pulling out your phone.

Lock Your Phone Up. We stored ours in a theme park locker rather than the hotel safe, so if we somehow got separated, we could always return to retrieve them. It was a simple safety net that made going phone-free feel risk-free.

Agree on a Meeting Spot. Without the option to call each other, we made sure our kids knew exactly what to do and where to go if they couldn't find us—just like families did in the '90s.

Find a Screen-Free Camera You Love. A disposable film camera or a screen-free digital camera like the Camp Snap are both great options. Or lean into the PhotoPass photographers and let the surprise photos be part of the fun.

Give Yourself Permission to Just Be There. Even when our phones weren't locked up, we made a conscious choice not to use them. We focused on spending time together and making memories as a family—which, after all, is the whole point of a vacation.

On June 14, 1961, Patsy Cline was involved in a terrifying car accident that nearly ended her life.

Instead, the tragedy became the backdrop for one of the most important moments in country music history.

That afternoon, Cline and her brother, Sam Hensley Jr., were seriously injured in a head-on collision near Madison High School outside Nashville. The crash left the singer with severe injuries, including a fractured hip, a badly injured wrist and a large cut across her forehead that required extensive treatment.

The injuries were so serious that Cline spent nearly two months recovering in the hospital.

At the time, her future as a performer was uncertain. Friends, family members and fellow musicians worried about whether she would ever fully recover.

But while Cline was confined to a hospital bed, something remarkable was happening.

Her latest single, "I Fall to Pieces," was quietly climbing the charts.

The song had gotten off to a slow start after its release. In fact, some industry observers questioned whether it would become a hit at all. Yet as Cline recovered from her injuries, radio audiences across the country began embracing the heartbreaking ballad.

By August 1961, "I Fall to Pieces" had reached No. 1 on the country chart, giving Cline the first country chart-topper of her career.

The success didn't stop there.

The song also crossed over to pop audiences, reaching the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helping introduce Cline's distinctive voice to millions of listeners outside the country music world.

The achievement transformed her from a respected country performer into a national star.

Today, "I Fall to Pieces" is widely regarded as one of the defining recordings of Cline's career and one of the greatest country songs ever recorded. The track would later be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and remains a cornerstone of country music history.

Looking back, the timing remains extraordinary.

While recovering from a near-fatal accident that threatened to derail her career, Cline watched from a hospital room as the song that would change her life became her first No. 1 hit.

Stevie Nicks has earned another major honor.

BBC Music Magazine recently ranked the 25 greatest frontwomen in rock history, and the Fleetwood Mac icon claimed the No. 1 spot. The honor is the latest accolade for NIcks, whom Rolling Stone once famously dubbed the "Queen of Rock and Roll."

In its ranking, the magazine described Nicks as "mystical, iconic, and unmistakable," crediting her with becoming "the beating heart of Fleetwood Mac" and helping transform the band's personal and professional turmoil into timeless music.

The magazine praised Nicks' distinctive voice and stage presence, writing that she could "whisper vulnerability or soar with raw intensity" while making every performance feel like "part ritual, part storytelling, part rock spectacle."

According to the publication, the emotional fallout surrounding Fleetwood Mac's blockbuster Rumours era helped fuel some of Nicks' most enduring work, giving songs like "Dreams" and "Gold Dust Woman" a combination of intimacy and universal appeal that continues to resonate with listeners decades later.

Nicks topped a list filled with legendary performers. Patti Smith finished at No. 2, followed by fellow Fleetwood Mac star Christine McVie at No. 3. Courtney Love landed at No. 4, while Janis Joplin rounded out the top five.

The ranking gave Fleetwood Mac an especially impressive showing, with two members occupying spots in the top three. While Nicks was celebrated for her mystical image, songwriting and commanding stage presence, BBC Music Magazine praised McVie as the band's "grounding, rhythmic soul" and credited her with providing the emotional and musical foundation that helped hold the group together during its most turbulent years.

The rest of the top 10 included several other influential artists: Siouxsie Sioux, Debbie Harry, Annie Lennox, Liz Fraser and Heart singer Ann Wilson.

The recognition comes years after Nicks made history as the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, first as a member of Fleetwood Mac and later as a solo artist. Reflecting on that achievement in a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone, Nicks said she hoped it would create opportunities for future generations of women in music.

"My biggest hope is that I have opened the door due to the fact that there's 22 men who have gone in twice and zero women," Nicks said at the time. "I think that's really a little off balance."

She added that she hoped her accomplishment would give younger female artists "a little hope that they can also do what I do."

Nicks also spoke about the unique path that allowed her to thrive both with Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist. "The fact that I've been able to have these two careers my whole life … has made my life amazing," she told Rolling Stone.

More than 50 years after joining Fleetwood Mac, Nicks continues to attract new audiences while inspiring generations of performers. Whether through her work with one of rock's biggest bands or her acclaimed solo career, her influence remains impossible to ignore, which helps explain why BBC Music Magazine ultimately placed her at No. 1.

Probably one of the most well-known female authors of all time—or just authors in general, if we’re being honest—Jane Austen left her mark on literature and history through her witty and revolutionary novels portraying normal people in everyday life. As Britannica reported, she was one of the first to write novels with “distinctly modern character[s]” in this way. She also “defined the era’s novel of manners,” which were works of fiction that recreated the complex social world at the time, with “conventions of society” dominating the story. She’s known for so many classic works such as Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park and Emma. And our quote of the day comes from maybe her most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice, and covers the topic of—shocker!—pride. 

Austen was born in 1775 in Steventon, a small village in Hampshire, England, according to Jane Austen’s House. While we know about her family life and history—such as the fact that her father was a Church of England clergyman and that Austen attended the Reading Abbey House School for girls—many of her letters haven’t survived time, leaving a lot to be desired in regards to her personal thoughts and feelings. According to Britannica, only 160 letters out of thousands are around today.

But alas, we still have Austen’s vast collection of novels and writings. In her “novels of manners," she didn’t just rehash societal structures, grand parties or proper etiquette (though she did do that as well); she was also making satire and commentary on the upper-class landowners of the time. Her class commentary—using irony and clever prose—is seen in all of her works, even if it’s not the central plot points.

Pride and Prejudice is a perfect example of this kind of writing, with the title giving way to the book's main themes. And today’s quote is from one of Elizabeth Bennet’s sisters, who explains that someone can be “proud without being vain,” and the difference between the two.

“A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.”

This line is from one of Jane Austen’s most famous books: Pride and Prejudice. Specifically, it occurs at the end of Chapter 5, with Elizabeth Bennet’s younger sister, Mary, saying the quote.

“‘Pride,’ observed Mary, who piqued herself upon the solidity of her reflections, ‘is a very common failing, I believe. By all that I have ever read, I am convinced that it is very common indeed; that human nature is particularly prone to it, and that there are very few of us who do not cherish a feeling of self-complacency on the score of some quality or other, real or imaginary. Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.’”

This is in response to Charlotte Lucas stating that Mr. Darcy has a right to be proud and a bit pompous because he is a “very fine… young man, with family, fortune, everything in his favour…” Elizabeth Bennet replies that she agrees and that she would “easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine.”

Deeper Meaning of Jane Austen’s Quote—'A Person May Be Proud Without Being Vain'

In a book titled Pride and Prejudice, it makes sense that the topic of “pride” and being proud of yourself comes up quite often. And Mr. Darcy’s pride is definitely a major topic of conversation, because he does have a lot of it. He appears snobby and classist, which almost gets in the way of making a love match with Elizabeth, the protagonist of the book. 

Even though Elizabeth’s father is a landowner and they aren’t “lowly” people, they are still beneath Mr. Darcy in the class hierarchy in general. And Lizzy, herself, is not on Darcy’s “level” just by being a woman and having to marry off to have any life in the future because her father’s money and land cannot be passed down to her nor any of her sisters (only a male heir is allowed to inherit it). But, as most of us know, Elizabeth’s lively mind, intelligence, personality, sharp tongue and playfulness attract Darcy to her, leading to their love story. 

Both Darcy and Elizabeth have to overcome their own prejudices—both inherent and against each other—to see what’s right in front of them. But there is also pride that gets in the way (and not just Darcy’s). But again, this quote is specifically in response to a conversation about his ego.

Mary, who is bookish and a bit long-winded, is saying that pride is a common “vice” for everyone and that just existing as humans makes us “prone to it.”

She then states the difference between being proud and vain: one relates to what we think of ourselves (pride), and the other is worried about what others think of us (vain). Vanity can come off as very pompous, though—and honestly, some aggressively proud people can also come off this way—which comes from that public, performative nature of that flaw.

Similar to the distinction between confidence and arrogance, pride and vanity are not the same thing, nor are they mutually exclusive. And of course, one is a bit more positive while the other is negative, though they both can veer in an unfavorable direction. 

And even though Mary does call it a “failing,” there is really nothing wrong with being proud of yourself, especially if you’ve accomplished something.

Influencer Jen Hamilton is receiving support from her millions of followers amid her rumored divorce from her husband, Brian Hamilton.

Who Is Jen Hamilton's Husband?

Jen has previously opened up about meeting Brian while working together as counselors at a summer camp for terminally and chronically ill children in North Carolina.

The pair began dating after learning that they both attended Liberty University.

Few songs in country music history have had a journey quite like "How Do I Live."

Today, the Diane Warren-penned ballad is remembered as one of the biggest hits of the 1990s. But when it debuted on June 14, 1997, it sparked one of the most unusual chart battles country music had ever seen.

The story began when "How Do I Live" was selected for the soundtrack of the action film Con Air, starring Nicolas Cage. Rising country star LeAnn Rimes, then just 14 years old, was initially chosen to record the song for the movie.

However, producers later decided they wanted a more mature voice for the film's version. As a result, country star Trisha Yearwood was brought in to record her own rendition.

Instead of replacing Rimes', 43, recording entirely, both versions were released.

On June 14, 1997, the two recordings entered the charts at the same time, setting up a rare head-to-head competition between two country artists singing the exact same song.

What happened next surprised nearly everyone.

Rimes' version quickly crossed over to pop audiences and became a cultural phenomenon. Although it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, it remained on the chart for an astonishing 69 weeks, setting a record for the longest chart run in Hot 100 history at the time.

The song's staying power proved extraordinary. For more than a decade, no recording spent more time on the Hot 100 until "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz surpassed the mark in 2009.

Yearwood's, 61, version found success of its own. Her recording became a major country hit, reaching No. 2 on the country charts and earning widespread acclaim. It also won her the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance, ensuring that both artists would forever be linked to the song's remarkable legacy.

Nearly three decades later, "How Do I Live" remains one of the defining ballads of the 1990s and one of the rare instances where two competing versions of the same song became major hits at the same time.

Tyler Farr was forced to bow out of his festival performance over the weekend after suffering from a motor vehicle injury on his farm. The incident led to him being transported to a local hospital for treatment. 

The country music star, 42, was scheduled to take the stage at the Goshen Stampede in Goshen, Connecticut, on Saturday, June 13. However, his appearance didn’t go as planned, according to an announcement posted on the festival’s official Instagram page. 

“Due to a motor vehicle incident on his farm, Tyler Farr was taken to a local hospital,” the statement reads before revealing that due to the accident, Farr was “diagnosed with a severe concussion.” 

“Tyler Farr will no longer be able to perform at the Goshen Stampede on June 13, 2026,” the caption continues. “We appreciate everyone's understanding and will share additional event information as it becomes available. We wish Tyler a speedy recovery.” 

The post went on to say that artist “David Foster and the All Stars” would fill in for Farr’s absence, writing, “We are fortunate to have David Foster and the All Stars step in for Tyler. With numerous memorable performances, including appearances at Mohegan Sun Casino, the All Stars are a legendary New England group of musicians led by Dr. David “Lefty” Foster, performing legendary classic rock, country, and R&B hits."

“The Goshen Stamped is full steam ahead with all events, and we’re excited to get down, dirty, and country with 2 huge rodeos, truck pulls, monster trucks, great food, carnival rides, and family fun,” the caption read in closing. “Gates open at 11 today.” 

At this point, Farr has not shared a statement of his own regarding his injury, but his team reposted the festival statement on his social media pages. No additional details about his current condition or recovery have been made available at this time.

Beyond the heartbreaking track, the debut album also includes "Bell Bottom Blues," which became Derek and the Dominos’ second single to hit the Billboard Hot 100, entering at No. 78.

After the British rock supergroup Blind Faith failed to sustain its momentum despite having notable members, Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos in 1970 to escape the intense media pressure following his rise to stardom, as mentioned in different reports.

Wanting to distance himself from expectations, he adopted the nickname “Derek” to keep himself anonymous and allow the public to focus on their music.

Behind the success of “Layla” and the modest commercial performance of their other songs, the group disbanded due to personal issues and strained working relationships.

The moment was extra special for the lifelong Knicks fan, who was born and raised in Manhattan, New York. A key architect of both 1960s baroque-pop and 1970s arena rock, Argent is the celebrated keyboardist and vocalist for The Zombies, and the mastermind behind Argent. Today, the man, the myth, the legend is giving fans another reason to celebrate: his 81st birthday.

Born June 14, 1945, in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, Argent sang in his church choir before forming his first bands as a teenager. In 1961, his efforts evolves into The Zombies, which he founded with classmates Paul Atkinson and Hugh Grundy, later joined by singer Colin Blunstone and bassist Chris White. 

With dreams of becoming a rock-star lead singer, Argent instead became infatuated with the keys. After he taught himself the way of the keyboard and organ, he used his mastery for the complex arrangements that would follow. This also aided in his songwriting, which led to the prodigy becoming a global star by the age of just 19 with "She's Not There.”

"If anyone had said to me not only would people be still playing it intensively for 50 years later, but it would still be relating to young people as well as people of all ages, we'd have thought they were completely bananas," Argent said in an interview with Classic Bands.

Released in 1964, the song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became an international hit. It was followed by two more Top 10 classics -- “Tell Her No” in 1965 and the band’s psychedelic landmark, “Time of the Season,” in 1967 -- and numerous critical hits including "The Way I Feel Inside" and "This Will Be Our Year."  

Following the release of Odessey and Oracle, the magnum opus that housed "Time of the Season," The Zombies tragically broke up. With no band member left to promote the album, lackluster sales followed. It would take another year and an ardent push from A&R producer Al Kooper for “Time of the Season” to explode across the U.S., with critics hailing it as a psychedelic masterpiece and one of the greatest albums of the 1960s. 

The Seventies ushered in reinvention for Argent. Shifting to progressive and arena rock with the band Argent, he recorded the anthems that would come to define his career. With “Hold Your Head Up” in 1972, the keyboard wizard unleashed what Rick Wakeman later called the greatest ever recorded. A year later, “God Gave Rock and Roll to You” blessed the world; its legacy ballooning with KISS’ cover in 1991 for the cult classic Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. 

In 2001, The Zombies officially reunited. Argent and his fellow founder, Blunstone, reformed a touring band and have maintained a robust schedule of recording and global touring ever since.

"We give as much energy and we get as energized by it as we did … when we were eighteen and nineteen years old," he said.

Beyond his own bands, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer is a versatile composer, producer, and session musician, contributing iconic keyboard parts to The Who’s "Love Is Coming Down" from their 1978Who Are You album.
