Melanie Martinez is remembering her ex-boyfriend Oliver Tree.

The musician, whose legal name was Oliver Tree Nickell, died at the age of 32 on Sunday, June 14 following a helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Shortly after the news broke, Martinez took to her Instagram Story to pay tribute to her ex and longtime friend.

"Been an absolute wreck today. It's really hard to understand how someone who you once shared such a specific and formative time of your life with can all of a sudden be gone," the Voice alum wrote. "He was so dedicated to his art which I admired and respected so deeply."

"I think everyone who knew him will look back at those moments of laughter and joy he so easily sparked," she continued. "His laugh was so contagious and warm. His ability to lead creatively and take action while also maintaining a sense of childlike wonder and awe was so inspiring. He had such a soft heart and was a true artist in every way."

Martinez concluded, "Rest in peace Oliver. I know you're making the angels giggle. I'll be here wondering what stunt and creative project you're scheming up in heaven."

Prior to confirming their romantic relationship in September 2019, Martinez and Tree were friends who frequently interacted with each other on social media.

By mid-2020, signs of a split began to surface. In July of that year, Martinez unfollowed Tree on Instagram, and both artists deleted photos of each other from their profiles, fueling breakup speculation among fans.

In May 2021, Martinez addressed the situation directly in an Instagram Story, confirming that she and Tree had ended their relationship but remained on good terms. In August 2023, Martinez posted a statement on her Story asking her fans to stop sending hate towards Tree.

“Can you guys do me a favor and leave @olivertree alone… we ended things mutually years ago and on good terms,” Martinez wrote at the time. "Please be nice, and stop spreading false information. I already told you guys we ended things mutually years ago and on good terms. I've said before how much it upsets me when you guys bully people on the internet. please stay positive and be kind toward one another 💐."

Tree was best known for his hit songs like “Life Goes On” and “Miss You." His 2020 album Ugly Is Beautiful reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums charts, and he received Kids’ Choice Award nominations for Favorite Social Music Star in both 2022 and 2023.

Saturday Night Live legend Cheri Oteri is opening up about her recent breast cancer removal.

Oteri, 63, who rose to fame on SNL with characters like Arianna of The Spartan Cheerleaders alongside Will Ferrell, Cass Van Rye on Morning Latte, and Nadeen, a disgruntled employee who told everyone to “Simmer down now,” departed the iconic late-night series in 2000. In the years that followed, Oteri made endless TV and film appearances, but avoided the major spotlight that claimed many of her famous former co-stars. But in a new podcast interview, Oteri revealed she was recently diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) but is feeling “great” after having her second lumpectomy in recent weeks, Deadline reported. Oteri added that “everything looks normal and fine” after the operation. We're so happy to hear it!

Oteri Found a Friend in Dr. Jill Biden

 In a new episode of the Dear Chelsea podcast with Chelsea Handler, Oteri shared that at a recent Milken Institute dinner, she connected with Dr. Jill Biden over her breast cancer journey.

“I’m sitting there quiet, and I’m like, this is so serendipitous,” said Oteri. “And I’m listening to all these women, and then at the end, Jill came up to me and we were saying goodbye, and I told her that I was just diagnosed and she said, ‘When is your surgery?’ And I said, ‘The 26th.’ And she said, ‘All right, you’re gonna get tired of me. … I’m going through this with you.’ This woman, before my surgery, after my surgery, she just she goes, ‘I am with you on this.’ I was blown away. 

“That is a woman with a huge heart, and through everything, she’s checking on me, and just a beautiful human being. So, I never felt so supported, by my friends, my girlfriends,” she added.

Oteri is Encouraging Early Detection

Oteri went on to say that she “caught it early,” emphasizing, “So, that’s my message to everybody too, is get your mammogram. I caught it really early.”

Former Ellen star Sophia Grace Brownlee is pregnant and expecting her third baby.

"we can’t wait to meet you 🤍" she captioned her announcement post on Sunday, June 14, showing off her baby bump and sonogram photos.

The influencer is already mother to son River, whom she welcomed on February 26, 2023, and daughter Athena, born December 29, 2024.

Brownlee, 23, has never revealed the identity of the father of her children. However, she previously opened up about why she prefers to keep her romantic relationship private.

"I feel like a lot of people, especially people that are in the public eye, like some people decide to post their partner everywhere all over everything, but I feel like because I have always sort of been in the spotlight, I feel like it's almost like I want something just to keep to myself and just something that I can keep private and that I can just enjoy myself and not have to share it with everyone," she told E! in October 2022. "I would be completely happy to share him, and I would be completely happy for him to be in my videos, but I feel like when he's confident enough to be in them, then maybe like we could do that and it'll be really fun."

Alan Jackson, the legendary '90s country star, has revealed he is opening a museum and distillery in Nashville. The exciting news was announced on Friday via Instagram and falls just before the final show of his career.

The establishment is a fusion of a whiskey distillery and a Jackson depository, allowing country music fans to simultaneously immerse themselves in the legend's unparalleled career while indulging in the classic taste of his bourbon brand, Silverbelly Whiskey.

The interactive facility will showcase decades' worth of Jackson's memorabilia, historical artifacts and exclusive exhibits—taking patrons on a journey through the rise and peak of his stardom. In the press release, Jackson’s longtime manager Debbie Doebler expressed her enthusiasm for the project, uplifting Jackson's legacy as a standout figure in the country genre.

“For over four decades, Alan has had an amazing career where his music has told stories of his life, creating the foundation of the legacy that we’re excited to share with his fans,” Doebler said. “We’re proud to be creating a new way for Alan and his music to be part of all that Nashville offers to residents and visitors alike, day-in and day-out.”

Similarly, Silverbelly CEO Robbie Goldsmith shared his excitement about bringing this vision to life to honor Jackson's career.

“We couldn't be more excited to bring Alan Jackson’s local, Tennessee-made Silverbelly Whiskey to downtown Nashville,” said Goldsmith. “This is a truly unique setting and opportunity for people to get into the ‘spirit’ of what country music and Music City are all about.”

Jackson's museum will open only two days before the final performance of his career. After wrapping up his massively beloved farewell tour, the country artist announced one last concert. The show, dubbed "Last Call: One More for the Road - The Finale," is set to take place on June 27, concluding a 40-year legacy of influence in the country music space.

The Alan Jackson Museum will be open for visitors on June 25. Tickets for the experience can be purchased through his official website.

In 1972, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band helped bridge generations of American music with a recording that honored the past while inspiring the future.

Their version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" became the emotional centerpiece of the landmark triple album Will the Circle Be Unbroken, introducing countless listeners to one of the most beloved songs in gospel and country music history.

Although the song had existed for decades, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's recording gave it new life.

The original hymn, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?", was published in 1907 by songwriter Ada R. Habershon with music by Charles H. Gabriel. It was itself inspired by the earlier gospel hymn "Can the Circle Be Unbroken (By and By)," exploring themes of faith, family and the hope of reunion in heaven.

By the early 1970s, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band set out to pay tribute to the pioneers who had shaped country, bluegrass and folk music.

"A.P. Carter found [the hymn] and recorded it with a couple of verses he wrote and some of the traditional verses," Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's John McEuen told Classic Bands. "When we recorded the album, that was just going to be one of the songs, but when we recorded it, it became obvious that was going to be the title."

Rather than simply recording the song on their own, they invited many of their musical heroes into the studio. The resulting sessions brought together legends including Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Roy Acuff, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin and dozens of other country music icons.

The collaboration became far more than an album. It served as a meeting point between generations, pairing young musicians with artists whose careers stretched back to the earliest days of country music.

"From the time that I asked Earl [Scruggs] if he would record with us, to the start of the recording session, it had been eight weeks," McEuen told Acoustic Guitar. "It came together so fast it’s hard to believe now. But the times were very different then—this could not happen now. I don't know if these types of people are even around anymore."

Released in 1972, Will the Circle Be Unbroken was both a critical and commercial success. It earned widespread acclaim for preserving the spirit of traditional American roots music while introducing those songs to a new audience. In 1997, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, recognizing its lasting cultural and musical significance.

The title song remains the heart of the project.

Its message of hope, remembrance and enduring family bonds has made it a fixture at gospel gatherings, memorial services and country music celebrations for generations. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version, with its communal spirit and all-star cast of performers, continues to embody the song’s central message better than perhaps any other recording.

More than 50 years after its release, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" remains one of country music's most treasured recordings.

Adapted from Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles, The Vampire Lestat premiered June 7. And though it's technically the third season in the Interview With a Vampire series, showrunner Rolin Jones retitled the series to reflect the significant shift in narrative and source material. 

The current installment spans centuries and continents, beginning chronologically with 18th-century France before leaping into modern-day America, and follows Lestat de Lioncourt, a charismatic vampire determined to reclaim his story after being cast as a villain. In his quest for reinvention, he joins a garage band, turns his life into rock songs, and attempts to rewrite history on his own terms. 

The time-hopping narrative unfolds like a multi-city rock tour, moving through locales like Detroit, Toronto, and Toledo as Lestat exposes vampire secrets and reunites with his past along every pit stop. The dialogue is sharp, pace relentless, and rating unapologetically R. For viewers craving a classic rock revival, it might provide the fix you’re looking for.

According to Billboard, the series’ soundtrack was inspired by artists likely on heavy rotation on your favorite SiriusXM classic rock channels. We’re talking David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?,” T. Rex’s “20th Century Boy,” Heart’s “Barracuda,” and The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You.” Of course, more modern hits, like Radiohead’s “The National Anthem” and Nirvana’s “All Apologies,” provided inspo, too.

Composer Daniel Hart, who has toured with legends including Bowie and Radiohead, was tasked with writing more than 20 original songs for the show. “It’s not necessarily a one-for-one playlist,” he explained. “If you put these songs and Lestat’s songs side by side, you won’t always hear direct correlations. But I tried to pick songs … that would show both the breadth of Lestat’s compositional abilities, and songs that were imbued with the kind of structure or showmanship I was chasing after in my own writing.”

Baywatch legend Yasmine Bleeth is doing better than ever after leaving Hollywood.

Bleeth, 57, rose to stardom in the role of Caroline Holden on Baywatch alongside Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff. She starred on the ensemble series from 1993 to 1997 before heading to star on Nash Bridges with Don Johnson in 1998. While Bleeth ended up saying goodbye to Hollywood in the early aughts after a few years of personal problems, her former Baywatch co-star, David Chokachi, gave an update on the red swimsuit legend during an appearance on Steve Kmetko's popular podcast, Still Here Hollywood.

"I know she's doing fantastic. She's married and super happy, and I know she's sober and doing great. They tried to reach out to her to see if she would do the documentary, but she really didn't want to go back into the public spotlight really at all, so she basically just declined," shared Chokachi, who added, "she's such an amazing human being."

Bleeth Triumphed Over Addiction

In 2003, Bleeth opened up in a Glamour spread about her horrific battle with cocaine addiction. She would order the drug to her home and then stay up for days on end getting high. She once even collapsed at a photo shoot. After crashing her car while under the influence in Michigan, she was arrested and received two years probation.

“Consciously trying to stay off drugs is now part of my life and always will be,” Bleeth shared in the Glamour essay.

While in rehab, Bleeth met her husband, Paul Cerrito. Still happy, healthy, and sober over two decades later, Bleeth has no desire to return to Hollywood. While she's occasionally been spotted over the years, it's safe to say Bleeth's days in the spotlight are long gone.

Musicians don't always get what they want, but we rarely hear about it. Bruce Springsteenhelped celebrate Bono of U2 at a film festival. Springsteen, 76, revealed that one of his regrets is rejecting Bono years ago when he asked to use one of his songs for a good cause.

The Boss presented the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice award to Bono, 66, at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 13, according to PEOPLE. The award recognizes artists who use their platform to promote equality, dignity, and human rights.

Bono revealed he wanted to use "Girls in Their Summer Clothes" in a Gap commercial supporting the RED campaign fighting AIDS. "I said, ‘Bruce, this song ‘Girls in Their Summer Clothes,’ this is like one of the great pop songs ever,'" the U2 lead singer said. "He goes, ‘It's not bad, is it?' I said, ‘Would you think about using it for a commercial like for RED through Gap?' You said, ‘No.'"

Springsteen had a humble response to this. "That was a big mistake ... I should have said yes," he said. "That was just a song that I loved, and damn it, I still think back. I said, ‘Bono asked me to put this thing in a commercial on television, I should have f---ing done it, then people would hear it like a hit.' So I have to apologize, I should have done that."

Bono and Bobby Shriver started the non-profit organization Red and partnered with brands to raise donations for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. It has raised $800 million, according to the organization's website.

In 1974, the Eagleswrote a song that even they couldn't explain.

Fifty years later, they might not ever play it again.

The album it came from showed up right after a major flop. Desperado, the record before it, was a whole concept album about lonesome outlaw cowboys, and it tanked. Glenn Frey and Don Henley needed something bigger. What they got instead was, even by their own admission, a bit of a mess, at least when it came to the title track.

"On the Border" was supposed to be about the Watergate scandal. It was supposed to sound like R&B. Neither of those things quite worked out.

"The song 'On the Border' had something to do with politics, more specifically with the Watergate scandal," Henley said years later. "But it was a pretty clumsy, incoherent attempt. It was supposed to be an R&B-type song, but we missed the mark."

It wasn't just the songwriting that they felt unsure about. "We were still learning the ropes in terms of songwriting," Henley admitted. "Our producer didn't really know what to do with it, either."

Then came the back up vocals. By the time the band got around to recording them, half the group was drunk. Nobody involved with the making of the song seemed to be taking the moment too seriously.

From 'Incoherent' to Untouchable

Fifty years later, almost nothing about this band looks the same.

Henley's the only original member left in the band. Unfortunately, his co-founder, Glenn Frey, died in 2016, and Vince Gill has been filling in on tour ever since.

The same album that gave the world "On the Border," the song its own writer called incoherent, also gave us "Already Gone" and "Best of My Love." Both of those songs ended up on Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975), and in January 2026 that album hit a number nobody else ever has, 40 million copies sold, officially making it the best-selling album in American history.

And now, the band that once couldn't explain one of its very own songs is explaining, very clearly, why it's time to stop performing.

"I think this will probably be it," Henley told CBS Sunday Morning in early 2026. "I feel like we're getting toward the end, and that will be fine, too."

It wouldn't be the first time we thought it was the end. The Eagles broke up in 1980 swearing it was over, then got back together in 1994 for an album and tour that ended up lasting for decades.

This time, it's less about just the music and more about everything else. "I would like to spend more time with my family, and I would like to spend more time growing vegetables," Henley said. "I don't ever want to have a one-dimensional life," he added. With four children and a grandchild, "there's just lots of other things to do."

The Long Goodbye tour wrapped its Sphere residency in Las Vegas in March, then kept on going. A May date at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival turned into three more stadium shows, in Atlanta, Nashville and Arlington, with Tedeschi Trucks Band along for the ride. Asked if more shows might be coming, the band kept it vague, saying only that they'd share details as plans came together, and that they hoped to see as many fans as they could "before we finish up."

Whether "On the Border," the confused, drunk-vocals title track from 1974, makes any of those set lists is anyone's guess. Fifty years ago, the Eagles couldn't exactly figure out what they were making. Now, they know exactly what they're doing. They just haven't quite figured out how to stop.

America’s Got Talent has gone international in attracting talent in the last several years, so it was no surprise when a 17-year-old from Spain flew across the Atlantic to audition for judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Sofia Vergara and Howie Mandel.

In speaking with Mel B, Bety admitted the teenager, named Bety, was very nervous.

“I’ve always watched this show and dreaming one day I could be here and I’m here, so it’s actually insane,” she said. “It’s not real. This is my first time in America. I came with my brother. He’s my biggest supporter.”

“If you ‘ve been watching this show for a long time, why now?” Mel B queried.

“I feel I am at an age where I feel more confident in myself for some reason. I just have this feeling.”

And boy was her feeling right. Betty performed "If the World Was Ending," which she sang in both English and Spanish, following which she received a standing ovation from the judges and audience.

“Bety, I don’t think it could have gone any better for you right now,” Mel B told her. “You have so much potential, but I can see your nervousness.”

“I am so overwhelmed right now,” Bety admitted.

Mel B reassured her, “Take all this positive energy in. To me, you have one of those recording voices. If I was to hear you on the radio, I would know it was you immediately. And that is a standout, star quality.”

And Simon agreed.

“You have a very unique sound in your voice,” Howie said, also agreeing. “It’s kind of like Halsey and Adele all rolled into one. Well done, young lady.”

“Absolutely well done,” Sofia said. “Your energy is beautiful. The song was perfect. You’re a star already.”

And finally, Simon weighed in, “I love the fact that at 17, you’ve flown over, you’re nervous and then you kind of gave us a master class of how to sing a song.”

Sofia pointed out, “And in Spanish also.”

Then Simon continued, “It was amazing and you’re not copying people. I love the fact that you’ve got your own thing going. I think you absolutely nailed that Bety. “

Needless to say, Bety received four yeses. But now it remains to be seen if she can make it into the Live Shows after the judges make their cuts.

Just two months before his death, Oliver Tree was fighting for his music.

In early April, the singer-songwriter shocked fans when he announced that his latest album, Love You Madly, Hate You Badly, had been shelved amid what he described as ongoing issues with his longtime label, Atlantic Records.

"I just got word that my album is no longer coming out," Tree said in an Instagram video posted April 1. "Love You Madly, Hate You Badly is officially canceled, and I'm parting ways with Atlantic Records."

The 32-year-old didn't hold back when describing the experience. "Behind the scenes has been nothing short of a nightmare," he said. "I have no marketing budgets for music videos, no digital ad spend. Nobody really cares in the building, it seems like."

Tree went on to claim that songs had failed to be released due to internal errors, adding, "I've made them tens of millions of dollars, but they don't remember that."

Some fans hoped that it was a cruel April Fools' joke. But less than two weeks later, Tree returned with a dramatically different video update: "After making tens of millions of dollars over 8 years for Atlantic Records, they no longer want to support my art because I'm not making songs for TikTok. I never got into this to make TikTok songs."

Tree revealed that he had spent more than two years working on the album, sharing that he had "traveled 82 countries and recorded this album on all 7 continents." Thanks in part to fans rallying behind him online, negotiations with the label ultimately led to a resolution. "My team has got the label to agree to release Love You Madly, Hate You Badly on my personal imprint, Alien Boy Records." The album was eventually released on April 24.

Sadly, less than two months later and while on tour to promote that album, Tree passed away after a helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The singer-songwriter was among six people killed after two helicopters collided mid-air over the city's western zone early Sunday, June 14. According to reports, Tree had been in Brazil after performing in São Paulo as part of his ongoing world tour. Brazilian aviation authorities have since launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

During the Taxi Driver 50th Anniversary Screening and Panel event at the Tribeca Film Festival last Friday, June 5, Martin Scorsese reflected on making the 1976 film and working with a young Jodie Foster.

"Jodie, it's like so funny, because when I first met you, you came in a little office I had and just came saying hello for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," Martin Scorsese recalled about their first collaboration in 1974, perPeople.

Jodie Foster was just 12 years old when she filmed and starred in the 1976 film Taxi Driver. The film starred Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle as a disaffected taxi driver while Foster played Iris, a 12-year-old who’s being sex trafficked by her boyfriend. Despite her young age, Jodie was already a pro in Hollywood with numerous film and TV credits to her name. This was evident by her taking "control on set."

"She had more control on set and I kind of depended on her in a way. She had authority. I'm not kidding, an authority that was like, 'Yeah, I'm gonna go there, good, I'm there,' " he laughed. "It was really quite, quite, quite supportive, put it that way, because it was all hard to shoot."

Jodie was also at the event and recalled her experience on set, telling the crowd about a "funny moment" making Taxi Driver. "Marty was trying to explain to me how I was supposed to pull down his fly and then they couldn't stop giggling," she explained before adding that Robert De Niro also tried to give her advice but he couldn't stop giggle. "And then the two of them just couldn't stop laughing and they just couldn't give me a note because I think they were just so nervous that I was so young."

"It felt fun. It felt like a game and it felt important but also whimsical, which I think if you've directed and made art and you've made art with your friends, that's that feeling of feeling like this is the most serious thing on earth, but it's also, I cannot stop laughing. I remember Marty was, thought the blood stuff was very funny."

Jodie Foster Already Knew Scorsese's Work When She Was Cast

Foster was not a stranger to Scorsese's work, even at a tender preteen age. "The truth is, I saw Mean Streets and I was a kid, my mom went and took me to the movies," she said.

"She took me to Mean Streets and that was it. I just wanted to be a part of this. So, anything that you would have offered me, I would have done that. And in fact, I think I tried to be an extra in New York, New York, but it didn't work out because I was under 16 and they wouldn't let me work at night or something," she explained.

In the panel, she also recalled De Niro teaching her how to improvise. "I remember getting all like happy and I came home, came up the elevator and came to the hotel and I knocked on the door and I said to my mom, 'Oh my God, I think I might want to be an actor. This is amazing.' "

No one likes waiting for answers, especially when it has to do with their health. How many times have you Googled your symptoms, searching for an immediate explanation for them along with a (quick-acting) remedy? Or perhaps you’ve experienced frustration with your primary care provider when they can’t pinpoint a reason for your discomfort and recommend more testing instead.

Lisa Adarve, who lives in Ohio, knows this frustration all too well. Lisa knew immediately after her daughter Lucia was born that something was off, but it took 19 years until she had an answer explaining why. After almost two decades of doctor’s appointments, Lucia was diagnosed with Jordan’s syndrome, a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that affects brain cell development and function.

Jordan’s syndrome is characterized by developmental delays, seizures, a large head circumference, vision defects, low muscle tone, attention disorder, social and sensory challenges, disordered sleep and feeding difficulties. It wasn’t until after Lucia was referred to Cleveland Clinic’s Undiagnosed Disease Clinic, where she underwent genetic testing (Whole Exome Sequencing), that she was diagnosed. 

Parade spoke with Lucia and her mom, Lisa, about their long search for a diagnosis, the earliest symptoms Lucia experienced and what her life is like now living with Jordan’s syndrome.

A Relentless Pursuit of Answers

Lisa Adarve

Lucia is the youngest of five kids. “[My mom] knew how a safe pregnancy felt, and she had mother’s intuition that something was wrong when she was pregnant with me,” says Lucia, who is 19 years old now.

Lisa adds to this, saying that Lucia’s birth was not like her previous four children’s births. Due to severe low muscle tone, Lucia lacked the strength for the journey out of the birth canal, which caused her to get stuck on Lisa’s pelvis and resulted in a broken clavicle. “I knew something felt different, but I wasn’t worried yet,” Lisa explains.

Over time, Lisa noticed other symptoms that set Lucia apart from her other children. Lucia’s neck was floppy, and she couldn’t hold her head up. She missed important developmental milestones and her vision wasn’t tracking.

Lisa brought Lucia to several doctors, but none of them had any answers or seemed that concerned. “A lot of times, they would say, ‘she’s fine,’ or they would do an MRI because her head was larger [than average],” Lisa says. Lucia was always being sent to various doctors for testing, but they never had any answers for why she was outside of the normal range for typical child development.

Lucia admits she’s always felt different from other kids. She wasn’t as active as other children, which made her believe she was lazy. At school, she had trouble keeping up academically and struggled with social interactions. She says her teachers didn’t make an effort to help her. “Everything was a struggle for her, like learning how to tie her shoes, ride a bike or how to swim,” Lisa tells Parade.

Then, an unexpected disaster made everything more complicated. When Lucia was five years old, she got carbon monoxide poisoning on a boat, which caused her to experience seizures. Lucia received hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatment and was hospitalized. “After that, she regressed and didn’t even know her letters or sounds. It was like she turned back into a baby,” Lisa says, adding that it wasn’t until Lucia was in sixth grade that she could do basic reading. 

Getting a Diagnosis

As the years passed, Lisa spent countless hours each day working with Lucia, teaching her basic concepts. It took her 10 times as long to learn them as a typical child, but neither Lisa nor Lucia gave up. Lisa also continued to shuttle Lucia to doctors’ appointments for tests, but the doctors were stumped.

It was Lucia’s neurologist at Cincinnati Children’s, Dr. Todd M. Arthur, MD, who finally made some headway in November 2025 when Lucia was 18. “Dr. Arthur loves a good puzzle. He made a list of all my symptoms and became very energized trying to figure it out,” Lucia says. After a few hours of listening to Lucia and her mom, Dr. Arthur referred them to Cleveland Clinic’s Undiagnosed Disease Clinic. There, Lucia underwent genetic testing and was diagnosed with Jordan’s syndrome when she was 19.

Living With Jordan’s Syndrome

Neither Lucia nor her mom had heard of Jordan’s syndrome before the diagnosis. Many people with Jordan’s syndrome can’t eat, drink or walk. Lucia credits her mom’s dedication to working with her for her abilities. “There are only 482 people in the world with Jordan’s syndrome. I’m the 482nd,” Lucia says. “But there may be more people with it that haven’t been diagnosed,” Lisa adds.

Jordan’s syndrome makes Lucia susceptible to seizures, and Lucia credits her dogs (a mutt she used to own named Angelo and her current dog, an Australian shepherd named Mufasa) with saving her life several times. For example, Lucia says that one time, she had a seizure while taking a shower and hit her head on the granite floor. Mufasa barked until her parents rushed in to help her. Because of this, Lucia has become very passionate about advocating the importance of service dogs.

Finally having a diagnosis has provided a pathway forward. Lucia is now on medications to help control her seizures, which she says have helped her feel more energized—a stark difference from the constant lethargy she felt before. She is also doing better at school. Currently, Lucia is 19 and a sophomore at Purdue Global, pursuing a degree in criminal behavioral science.

“The genetic testing [that led to the diagnosis] has been a lifesaver for us. I know some people are scared of genetic testing because they don’t want to find out if anything is ‘wrong,’ but it’s better to know so that you can manage or treat it,” Lisa says.

What Lisa hopes other people will take away from Lucia’s health journey is to never stop advocating for yourself. She knew from literally day one that something was different about Lucia and she never stopped searching for the reason why. If it wasn’t for her steadfast search, Lucia may have never been diagnosed. It’s a reminder to never give up on your—or your loved one’s—health.

Time moves quickly. One minute, you're working your first job, laughing with your siblings at the dinner table and playing high school sports, and the next, you're settled into a career, building your own family and wondering why your knees are so "crunchy." (No? Only me?)

For some people, they're so caught up in friendships, romantic relationships, family dynamics and careers, that before they know it, their birthday candles have grown to a number that was unfathomable to them a decade or two before. While this is a celebratory experience for many, other individuals face aging and the transition to midlife with pessimism and dread.

Margie Lachman, PhD, professor of psychology, director of the Lifespan Lab at Brandeis University and author of Primetime: A New Vision for Midlife (released June 9), wants to help reframe this shift to middle age, emphasizing the positive opportunities it provides—and the impact it has on the rest of your life—instead.

Here are six truths about midlife that most people learn too late, Lachman shares with Parade, and why these specific insights make such a genuine difference now, as well as in the future. You might be surprised by one or two of the points in her list...

6 Truths About Midlife Most People Learn Too Late

Lachman wishes more people learned the following insights earlier in their lives:

1. Most people feel younger than their age

You're not beholden to the number on your birthday cake when it comes to how you're "supposed" to act or feel.

"Did you know that most healthy adults feel significantly younger than their birth certificate says they are; 10, 15, even 20 years younger?" Lachman says. "And it turns out that how old you feel is a better predictor of health outcomes than your actual objective age. Why? Because your subjective age reflects your functional capacity—can you do the things you want to do? If yes, you feel young. If no, you feel old. Your birth certificate is just paperwork—what matters is whether you're living the life you want."

2. Midlife is the golden hour for creativity

Our 40s and 50s are actually a great time to think big and make some creative swings.

"Midlife is our cognitive sweet spot—it’s where our experience meets our capability," Lachman tells Parade. "We examined patent records for U.S. inventors and found that the number of inventions peaks in early midlife. That makes perfect sense. Because while your memory isn't quite as sharp as it was at 25—or you're a bit slower processing new information—your experience, your accumulated knowledge, your wisdom—those skills are still climbing."

3. There’s an upside to stress 

For those of us who have high-functioning anxiety, this might be the reframe we've always needed.

"Midlife can be a particularly stressful time given all the demands," Lachman says. "When you successfully navigate a stressful situation—maybe you handle a difficult conversation with your boss, or you support a friend through crisis—you're not just solving that problem. You're building confidence. You're creating evidence for yourself: 'I can handle hard things.' Next time stress hits, you've got a track record. You're immunized. The key is recognizing that each challenge you overcome is strengthening you for the next one."

4. Your personality and identity aren’t set in stone early in life 

So, you've done the same things the same ways for years. Oh well! You can start fresh at any point.

"You can make changes in midlife," Lachman stresses. "Maybe you want to become more conscientious, more extraverted or less neurotic. This is entirely possible by changing your behaviors. You can make these changes with help from a professional or on your own. There are even apps that can help people make changes in their personality by doing things differently."

She recommends challenging yourself with specific tasks.

"Want to be less introverted? Make a point to speak up more in meetings at work or to attend more social functions and engage in conversations," she suggests.

5. Social relationships are crucial for your health

Don't overlook this one.

"In midlife we have a lot of responsibilities for others in the family, at work and in the community," Lachman says. "It may feel like everyone is counting on you to step up. That can be overwhelming with little time for yourself. Yet, caring and concern for others is a midlife specialty. And it can bring not only satisfaction and a sense of purpose, it also helps with your health and longevity."

That being said, it's important to fill your own cup as well.

"One word of caution though," she continues. "It is easy to get caught up in supporting others, but you also need support. A balance between giving and receiving support is important for your health and well-being."

6. What happens in midlife doesn’t stay in midlife

What you prioritize in these years has a much bigger impact on "future you" than you might think while you're in this stage.

"One’s health in midlife has a long reach into later life," Lachman explains. "Blood pressure in midlife is very important for cardiovascular and brain health in later life. Physical fitness, weight and sleep habits in midlife all predict health outcomes years later. It is important to nip health problems in the bud during midlife to avoid problems later on." 

This is one reason why she emphasizes: "Physical activity is a panacea."

"You would have to be hibernating or living on another planet if you didn’t know that physical exercise is important for your health," she says. "Yet, only about a quarter of adults in midlife engage in the recommended amount of exercise: at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity such as brisk walking and at least two days a week of activities that strengthen muscles."

She urges people to start consistently prioritizing movement.

"Exercise has remarkable benefits for physical, cognitive and psychological health," she explains. "For example, those who engage in regular exercise have reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, frailty, dementia and depression, and they live longer.  There are many different types of exercise that are beneficial. It doesn’t have to involve expensive equipment or joining a gym. The earlier you start the better."

"It’s a golden chance we should be exploiting," Lachman tells Parade. "It is a time to make sense of the past and sow the seeds for the future. If you view midlife through the lens of opportunity rather than loss, everything changes for the better."

Believing that "midlife is primetime" is "the fundamental reframe I hope people will embrace," Lachman explains.

"We’ve been sold this narrative of midlife as decline, the beginning of the end—but the research shows a completely different story," she continues. "This is your moment. You’ve got experience, you’ve got clarity about what matters, you’ve got skills you’ve honed for decades and you’ve still got time. Lots of it. If you see midlife with this mindset, it can be more fulfilling and open up the possibilities for growth and enjoyment."
