One of the World's Biggest Historical Attractions Is Getting a Facelift: Here's Why I'm All For It

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:33am

Few landmarks in the world are as instantly recognizable or as historically significant as the Colosseum.

Standing in the heart of Rome for nearly 2,000 years, this ancient amphitheater has survived earthquakes, looting, and the wear and tear of time. But now, it’s getting something new: a carefully planned facelift that aims to restore parts of its original structure, including recreating some of its long-lost columns.

And while the idea of “renovating” such an iconic monument might make some history lovers nervous, there’s a strong case for why this update is actually a very good thing.

The Colosseum has a bright new look following a restoration using the same travertine marble of ancient Rome to recreate parts of columns from 2,000 years ago. Tourists will be able to sit on large travertine marble slabs where the columns once stood and read reproductions of the Roman numerals that indicated seat sections. #TODAYShow

The restoration project focuses on reconstructing elements of the Colosseum’s outer colonnade, which has been partially missing for centuries. The goal isn’t to modernize the structure, but rather to bring it closer to how it looked in ancient times, using historical records and architectural research.

This isn’t about turning the Colosseum into something new. It’s about helping visitors better understand what once stood there.

Right now, parts of the structure can feel incomplete or difficult to interpret unless you already know its history. Reintroducing these architectural elements could make the experience far more immersive, especially for first-time visitors, which is what Stefano Boeri, the architect of the space, said: “The idea we had was to give back to the public the perception of the proportion of the arcades and the proportion of the vaults of the arches that were used to enter in the center of the Colosseum.”

Why Some People Are Against It

Whenever you touch a historic landmark, controversy is inevitable.

Critics argue that reconstruction risks compromising authenticity. After all, part of the Colosseum’s power lies in its ruins with the visible passage of time, the cracks, the missing pieces.

There’s also a broader concern in the world of preservation: Should we restore history or leave it exactly as it is?

Why This Restoration Makes Sense

Here’s the key difference: this project is rooted in historical accuracy, not reinvention.

The Colosseum has already undergone multiple restorations over the centuries. Preserving a structure this old isn’t about freezing it in time, it’s about maintaining it so future generations can experience it at all.

For travelers, that matters. Walking through the Colosseum today requires a bit of imagination. You have to picture the upper levels, the complete façade, the scale of what once stood. With these additions, visitors may finally be able to see the monument in a way that feels closer to its original grandeur.

View this post on Instagram A Better Experience for Modern Travelers

Millions of people visit the Colosseum every year, many of them experiencing ancient history for the first time. Making that experience more engaging and understandable isn’t a bad thing, it’s essential.

This facelift could:

  • Improve visual clarity of the structure
  • Enhance educational value
  • Create a more immersive visitor experience

There’s always a tension between preservation and progress, especially in a city like Rome where history is layered into every street, but projects like this show that the two don’t have to be in conflict.

By carefully restoring elements of the Colosseum, we’re not rewriting history, we’re reconnecting with it.

Savannah Guthrie Faces ‘Ambiguous Loss’: Psychologist Explains How to Cope Amid Mother’s Disappearance (Exclusive)

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:32am

Nancy Guthrie has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. Now six weeks into the investigation, Guthrie, 84, hasn't been found, and no suspect has been named. After spending weeks in Tucson, Nancy's daughter, Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, is back in New York with her husband and their two kids. Moreover, sources say that she's contemplating a return to work.

Parade spoke with licensed psychologist, certified healthcare ethics consultant, and founder of Shields Psychology & Consulting, PLLC in The Woodlands, Texas, Dr. Jenny Shields, to get insight into how Savannah might be navigating her new normal with so many unanswered questions still looming.

What Is 'Ambiguous Loss'?

Dr. Shields says that Savannah and her family are going through something that "doesn't neatly fit into what most of us think of as grief."

"We tend to talk about grief as a movement, something with 'stages,' even if we acknowledge those stages are messy. But in a situation like this, that traditional framework doesn’t quite hold. What families are often navigating instead is ambiguous loss, a term first described by Pauline Boss," Dr. Shields says.

"Ambiguous loss refers to a loss that has no clear ending: no confirmation, no ritual, and no specific moment where the mind can fully take in what has happened. With a death, there is usually a marker that helps the brain begin to process reality, such as a funeral, a gathering, or a final goodbye. In a disappearance, that moment never comes," she continues.

"The human brain is wired for completion. It wants to make sense of what has happened and arrive at an 'ending.' When there isn’t one, the mind keeps searching, revisiting possibilities, scanning for new information, and trying to resolve the unresolvable," Dr. Shields continues.

"I often describe it this way: There is no period at the end of the sentence, so the mind keeps trying to write one. Over time, people can experience what is known as 'frozen grief.' It isn't that nothing is happening; it’s that there is no clear place for the grief to land. The nervous system doesn’t fully settle because a part of you is always waiting," she adds.

Savannah Guthrie Isn't 'Moving On'—She's Adapting

Dr. Shields tells me that Savannah has "an additional layer of exhaustion" given her role in the media, coupled with this high-profile criminal case.

"Grief is already disorienting, but when it unfolds publicly, there is often an unspoken expectation to remain composed," Dr. Shields says.

I specifically asked how Savannah's decision to return to work (or not) might affect her.

"When people are watching, interpreting, and speculating, the mourner must manage a parallel effort: controlling how their experience is perceived. This is why returning to work is often misunderstood. For high-level professionals, work can provide a necessary tether to reality: structure, predictability, and a role that makes sense when the rest of life does not," she explains, adding, "Returning to work isn't 'moving on.' It’s adaptation. It’s about finding a way to be both a person living through profound uncertainty and a person still showing up in the world."

Savannah Guthrie Will Live in the 'Both/And'

For the time being, Savannah is sitting in an in-between—she's sitting with a great deal of sadness as well as contemplating the unknown, undoubtedly on an infinite loop.

Dr. Shields says that there's a shift that occurs that changes from "either/or" to "both/and."

When thinking in terms of "either she's coming home, or she's gone," Dr. Shields says the "framework is too brittle for this reality." Instead, Savannah—and her family—will learn to look at the situation as Nancy is "physically absent" and "she is still deeply present."

"Both are true. Holding those two realities simultaneously is not intuitive; it is a capacity that people must develop over time. This is not an abandonment of hope. It is a dialectical shift, allowing the individual to hold the tension between a desired future and an unresolved present without forcing a premature conclusion," Dr. Shields concludes.

1975 Hit Ranked Among ‘Best Disco Songs’ of All Time Became a No. 1 Timeless Classic

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:30am

Van McCoy’s iconic song “The Hustle” didn't just become a massive hit but was also considered one of the defining moments of the disco era.

The 1970s were all about vibrant fashion and the rise of nightclub and DJ culture, which coincided with the massive success of the movie Saturday Night Fever.

At the time, the multi-talented musician sparked a trend that continues to be celebrated as a classic even today.

Released in 1975, the Washington D.C native himself wrote the song in just one hour. What inspired him to create such a timeless masterpiece was that his partner, Charles Kipps, saw a dance craze at a nightclub in New York City’s Adam’s Apple.

After hearing the story about the club culture, McCoy initially thought it was “strange,” but what sparked his interest was the ballroom-like elegance.

“I hadn't even seen the dance when I wrote the song,” he told Black Stars magazine in 1975 as cited by The New York Times.

The song’s infectious and catchy rhythm and its minimalist lyrics, featuring only the repeated phrase “Do the Hustle,” helped it stand out instantly.

Following the song’s official release, “The Hustle” reached the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1. At the same time, it also topped the Hot Soul Singles chart, making it an undeniable hit.

While sparking a dance phenomenon in the U.S, the song also found success abroad, hitting No. 7 on the Dutch charts and entering the U.K. Top 40.

Now, decades after the public first heard the song, it is still making an impact and is ranked among the “Best Disco Songs of All Time” as mentioned by Forbes.

Out of the top 30 hits, McCoy’s song “The Hustle” landed at the 28th spot.

As described by the outlet, the “simplicity of Van McCoy’s ‘Hustle’ makes disco accessible, memorable and fun.”

Four years after the release of “The Hustle,” the public was shocked by McCoy’s death in 1979 at the age of 39 from a myocardial infarction.

In 2014, he was posthumously inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. This is in recognition of his contribution and the historical significance of his music

Travel Delays Expected After a Second Severe Storm Hits Newly Popular Spring Break Destination

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:15am

Spring break travel is already one of the busiest times of year but for travelers heading to Hawaii in 2026, it’s becoming increasingly complicated. A second round of severe weather is now impacting the islands, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and flight disruptions at a time when demand is at its peak.

The timing couldn’t be worse. Hawaii has seen a surge in popularity as a spring break destination this year, with travelers drawn to its beaches, warm weather, and outdoor experiences. But with millions of passengers flying during March and April, even minor disruptions can quickly snowball into widespread delays.

MORE RAIN FOR HAWAII 🌧️: Another Kona Low is forming over the Aloha State after days of torrential rain and hurricane-force winds. This led to flash flooding and widespread property damage. Stay with FOX Weather for the latest on the upcoming storm.

♬ original sound - FOX Weather - FOX Weather A Second Storm Adds to Growing Travel Disruptions

After an initial storm system earlier in the week, a second wave of severe weather is now moving across the islands, creating challenging travel conditions. Forecasts call for intense rain, gusty winds, and localized flooding, all of which can impact both air travel and on-the-ground transportation.

Airports like Daniel K. Inouye International Airport are especially vulnerable during storms like this. As a major gateway to the islands, delays here can ripple across the entire network, affecting flights to and from the mainland as well as inter-island travel.

Because Hawaii relies heavily on air travel, even small disruptions can have an outsized impact. Flights don’t just get delayed, they often get backed up for hours, especially when weather conditions fluctuate.

Related: Spring Breakers Are Obsessed With This U.S. Destination This Year

The Ripple Effects From the First Storm

Before this second system even arrived, the first storm had already created a wave of disruptions that Hawaii is still dealing with. Flights into Hawaii were delayed or canceled as strong winds and heavy rain impacted arrivals, particularly at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Because so many routes rely on this major hub, delays quickly spread across inter-island and mainland connections.

Airlines were forced to reshuffle schedules, leaving many travelers stranded or rebooked on later flights, often days out due to limited availability. Even after the storm passed, the system didn’t immediately recover. Aircraft and crew were out of position, creating a backlog that continued to affect departures.

On the ground, the impact was just as noticeable. Flooding in some areas and lingering weather conditions disrupted transportation and excursions, meaning travelers who did make it to the islands still faced delays getting around.

Now, with a second storm hitting, Hawaii isn’t starting from zero, it’s already playing catch-up.

@fox13seattle

***Video footage above shows last week’s weather system*** Residents across the Hawaiian Islands are bracing for a second round of severe weather this week as meteorologists track a new kona low developing west of the state. Travelers and residents caught in last week’s system described a scene of rapid transformation.

♬ original sound - FOX 13 Seattle Why Flights to Hawaii Are So Easily Disrupted

Travel to Hawaii comes with unique challenges, especially during severe weather.

Unlike mainland destinations, there are fewer alternate routes and limited backup options. If flights are delayed or canceled, rebooking can take longer simply because there are fewer flights available each day.

Add in strong winds or storms, and airlines may need to:

  • Delay departures from the mainland
  • Hold flights before landing
  • Cancel inter-island connections

And because many flights to Hawaii are long-haul routes, even a small delay can throw off entire schedules.

Related: These 5 ‘Analog’ Florida Towns Are Trending for Spring Break 2026

Spring Break Crowds Are Making It Worse

Spring break demand is amplifying the issue.

Flights to Hawaii are already:

  • Nearly full
  • More expensive than usual
  • Harder to rebook

This means when disruptions happen, travelers have fewer options. Unlike off-peak seasons, there’s little flexibility to shift passengers to later flights without significant delays.

Airports are also more crowded, with longer lines and increased wait times, adding another layer of stress for travelers already dealing with weather-related issues.

@kayla.a.24

♬ original sound - Quavo Fan Tips for Traveling to Hawaii Right Now

If you’re heading to Hawaii in the coming days, a little preparation can go a long way:

  • Check your flight status often: Conditions can change quickly, especially with back-to-back storms.
  • Arrive early at the airport: Give yourself extra time for check-in, security, and unexpected delays.
  • Avoid tight connections: If you’re connecting through a major hub, build in extra time.
  • Pack smart: Keep essentials in your carry-on in case of delays or cancellations.
  • Stay flexible with plans: Weather may impact excursions, so have backup options ready.

A second severe storm is adding turbulence to an already busy spring break travel season and Hawaii is feeling the effects.

With high demand, limited flight flexibility, and unpredictable weather, delays are likely for travelers heading to the islands. That said, with the right mindset and a little extra planning, your Hawaiian getaway can still be worth it.Just be prepared: getting there may take a bit longer than expected, but once you arrive, paradise is still waiting.

Norwegian Cruise Line Is Bringing Back a Beloved Island Perk Indefinitely

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:10am

If you have a Bahamian getaway on your 2027 calendar, Norwegian Cruise Line just released a duo of operational updates for Great Stirrup Cay that will likely change how you budget your beach day—and how you actually get onto the sand.

The cruise line is navigating a bit of a "give and take" scenario this spring, offering a massive win for value-conscious travelers while simultaneously asking for a little extra patience during the arrival process.

The headline news that will have many fans breathing a sigh of relief concerns the highly debated beverage policy. After facing significant pushback regarding plans to restrict "Free at Sea" perks on the island, NCL has officially reversed course. Instead of requiring a more expensive tier to keep the drinks flowing on the beach, the company has extended the current program indefinitely.

Related: Norwegian Cruise Line Announces Changes to Its Private Island

View this post on Instagram

Travel professionals were recently alerted to the shift, which has since been mirrored by the removal of Great Stirrup Cay from the exclusion list on the company’s official site. As one travel agent shared on social media, “The Free at Sea beverage package has been extended indefinitely for Great Stirrup Cay. So if you have the FAS drink package it will still work on GSC after March 31; you don’t need to upgrade to FAS+.”

This "walk-back" is a major financial win for guests. Previously, it appeared that the only way to maintain drink package benefits on the island was to jump to the "Free at Sea Plus" (FAS+) level.

That upgrade comes with a price tag of $49.99 per person, per day, compared to the $28.50 per day for the standard package. For a couple on a week-long sailing, sticking with the original "Free at Sea" tier represents a savings of roughly $300. If you already paid for the upgrade specifically for your island day, you can still downgrade or cancel that add-on, provided you do so at least three days before your ship leaves the dock.

Related: The Best-Kept Secret on Norwegian Cruise Line's Fleet

However, the second update involves a bit of a logistical hurdle starting this April. While the cruise line debuted a pier at the private destination late last year, that structure was always intended to be a temporary fix. To finalize the permanent, world-class docking facility, the island is temporarily reverting to tendering operations. The travel advisor’s update continued, “Many of you have used the pier built at GSC and noticed it was temporary. NCL will be working on the permanent pier, so tendering will return beginning in April.”

While tendering can be a time suck and is more susceptible to weather-related cancellations, the move is a necessary step toward the island's massive summer expansion. The goal is to have the permanent pier fully operational by July, just in time for the grand opening of the 19-slide Great Tides Waterpark. It’s a classic case of short-term construction growing pains leading to a long-term upgrade, ensuring that by the height of the summer season, guests can walk right off the ship and straight toward the new slides with their favorite drink already in hand.

1977’s Bittersweet Country Chart-Topper Has an Unforgettable Story Behind It

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:05am

In 1977, a bittersweet country hit rooted in childhood memories took over the airwaves and resonated so deeply with listeners that it soared to No. 1.

The radio was filled with the sounds of Glen Campbell’s hit "Southern Nights," bringing a sense of warmth and a touch of nostalgia to every listener. Fans couldn’t get enough of the song, making it one of the most beloved country hits of the year.

"Southern Nights" hit the top spot on the Billboard Charts in April of 1977 and remained on the charts for 22 weeks. Its deeply personal lyrics became a touchstone for those who longed for a simpler time of life.

The song was written by Allen Toussaint. He also recorded the song two years before Campbell's version became a massive hit.

Per Songfacts, Toussaint explained, "While I was finishing the album, Van Dyke Parks visited me in the studio. He said, 'Well, consider that you were going to die in two weeks. If you knew that, what would you think you would like to have done?' And after he said that, I wrote 'Southern Nights' as soon as he left."

He added, "That song was a total inspiration. It took about two hours to write."

Campbell was visiting the home of a friend, songwriter Jimmy Webb, who had the Toussaint record in his collection. It caught Campbell's attention, and he took the song to his producer, Jerry Klein, to record it.

Webb said, "Glen was very, very good at arranging things for Top 40 radio. He came over to my house one time, and I remember I was playing an Allen Toussaint record. I liked this record."

"He asked, 'What was that song?' I said, 'Southern Nights.' And he said, 'Is that your record? Can I have it?'"

Webb concluded, "That record. I mean, within four weeks, that record was on the air. He worked at a frightening pace once he got going."

Campbell said that the song's focus on childhood and the simpler times in life resonated with him. "My dad told me when I was a kid, ‘You’re having the best time of your life, and you don’t even know it.’ Sure enough, he was right."

He continued, "Now, I really feel the need to go back home, float down the Missouri River, and fish for bass and crappies. It’s real peaceful, and remote from things like telephones. My head is still there.”

"Southern Nights" was Glen Campbell's last No. 1 hit. He died in August 2017 at 81.

1969 Classic Rock Hit Ranked Among 'Best Spring Songs' of All Time

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 5:33am

The time has finally come—winter is gone, spring is officially here, and warmer days are on their way to stay (hopefully sooner than later). As we turn a new leaf and prepare for fresh blooms, outdoor adventures, and longer, sunny daylight hours, what better way to celebrate than by listening to songs that have been dubbed seasonal staples?

Billboard compiled the ultimate collection of songs to help usher in the new season, and it's bound to make the perfect soundtrack for those spring cleaning days up ahead or bike rides through the park. The iconic music publication's staff-curated roundup includes 15 of the "Best Songs About Spring Showers, Flowers & Everything in Between," and though the picks are said to be listed in no particular order, one track has long been recognized as the quintessential spring song: "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles.

The 1969 classic captures the feeling of emerging from a brutal winter and welcoming the sun with open arms, expressing how the ice slowly melting and the weather heating up bring smiles back to faces. "It's been a long, cold, lonely winter / Little darlin' / It feels like years since it's been here / Here comes the sun," the legendary musicians croon on the track.

Released on Sept. 26, 1969, as part of the rock band's album Abbey Road, the tune was written by George Harrison and produced by George Martin, according to The Beatles' website. It became one of their most enduring hits ever, and the first song from the decade (1960s) to reach one billion streams on Spotify (2023).

1976 Hit, Ranked One of the Year's ‘Top Songs', Is a Timeless Classic—But Almost Didn’t Make the Album

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 5:25am

In 1976, Kansas recorded the  song “Carry On Wayward Son.” The opening song released on the progressive rock band’s fourth studio album, Leftoverture, became their first Top 40 hit, reaching No 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Fifty years later, “Carry on Wayward Son” remains the band’s signature song.

In February 2026, Ultimate Classic Rock ranked “Carry on Wayward  Son” as one of the top 40 songs of 1976. The song, sandwiched between Boz Scaggs’ “Lowdown” and the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK,” landed at No. 15 on the ranking list. UCR revealed that "Carry On Wayward Son" was the song that introduced Kansas to mainstream audiences. “The song just missed the Top 10, but the album went to No. 5, forever changing their destiny,” the rock outlet noted.

‘Carry on Wayward Son’ barely made Kansas’ album

"Carry on Wayward Son” was written by Kansas founding member and guitarist Kerry Livgren. In a 2004 interview with Classic Rock, Livgren recalled the band’s “frustrating” time of being on the brink of success but not quite getting there. After taking on most of the songwriting duties for Leftoverture due to co-writer Steve Walsh’s writer’s block, Livgren came up with a last-minute addition. The idea didn’t thrill his bandmates—at first.

“We were going to start packing up and head down to Bogalusa, where we’d been recording,” guitarist Rich Williams recalled to the Ultimate Classic Rock Nightsradio show in 2019. “And Kerry, the last day, goes, ‘I’ve got another song.’ ‘Oh, crap!’ We really didn’t want to learn anything else. So he starts playing. ‘Whoa! This has got some promise to it!’ So we learned – just barely learned – it and then we went on to the studio.”

“I brought in a song I’d written at the last minute, and said: ‘Guys, maybe you ought to listen to this,’” Livgren told Classic Rock. “When they heard it, everybody’s eyebrows raised. And of course it changed everything for Kansas.”

“For such a very, very special song, it barely made the record,” drummer Phil Ehart confirmed to the outlet.

Ehart also speculated that if it had not been for “Carry On Wayward Son,” music producer Don Kirshner "might not have signed up” for a fifth album with Kansas.

“Without 'Carry On Wayward Son' we’d have to have waited around for 'Dust In The Wind' – if we’d gotten that far,” he added.

‘Carry on Wayward Son’ Saved Kansas

Fifty years after "Carry On Wayward Son” was released, the song remains a rock radio staple. The timeless classic has also been featured in a long list of TV shows and movies, including Supernatural and Happy Gilmore.

But it started out as Livgren’s last-ditch effort at a hit after feeling “tremendous pressure” from the band’s record label.

“We needed some kind of a quantum leap to really get on the charts. … I  didn't set out to write a hit single, it just happened,” he shared in a video interview. “I was able to synthesize my style with something commercial, that's where I made the big leap.”

"By the time our fourth album came out, it was like, 'Hey guys, if you don't do it this time…’ They didn't say, ‘We're gonna drop you,’ but that was implied,” the Kansas legend shared. “And that would have been just the end of it if we'd been dropped by  the label, so it was it was intense pressure.”

“I guess I save the best ideas for last because I don't know why that happened,” he added of the hit Kansas song.

One of the biggest reasons people love this glass tumbler is its versatility. While it's clearly a favorite for iced coffee, it also works well for other cold drinks like iced tea, water or even a homemade matcha latte.

That said, shoppers do point out a few things to keep in mind. The wooden lid is more decorative than leak-proof, so this isn't the kind of tumbler you'd want to toss in a bag. Some reviewers also say the lid can be a little tricky to clean and recommend handwashing to keep it in good shape. Still, most agree that those small trade-offs are worth it for the overall look and feel.

Durability gets mixed but mostly positive reviews. A few people note that the glass feels a bit delicate, but many say they've had no issues using it daily, even running it through the dishwasher. Others love it so much that they plan to buy multiple to replace their current cups.

For under $12, this Target find hits that sweet spot between style and function. It's not trying to be a heavy-duty travel mug, but for iced coffee at home, at work or during a quick drive, it checks all the boxes.

These 4 Birth Months Carry Unshakeable Optimism

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 5:22am

Optimism has a wonderful way of turning setbacks into opportunities. When we view the world through the lens of a half-full glass, we tend to notice positive aspects, potential pathways, and beautiful blessings that we might have otherwise overlooked. Having a good attitude doesn't mean being out of touch with reality. Positive people can still acknowledge hurt feelings or challenging times; rather, they choose to believe that finding the silver lining brings greater empowerment. According to expert astrologers, four birth months stand out as the most likely to foster unshakeable optimism. While anyone can develop this trait, their cosmic influences are closely tied to the archetypes that encourage a positive attitude.

Which Birth Months Have Unshakeable Optimism?

Check for your birth month. Disregard your birth date.

April

People born in April tend to carry a resilient spirit. With fiery passion, it's hard to keep them trapped for long. Whether they are pioneering Aries or practical Taurus, this birth month makes luck happen for them instead of waiting around for miracles. While everyone faces tough times and needs to vent, these individuals don’t dwell on their misery for long. Instead, they take on leadership roles or take proactive steps to change their circumstances. In each failure, they see an opportunity to learn. When things don’t go their way, they look for alternative routes. They believe that their willpower, confidence, and strength will help them persevere, maintaining a practical, action-oriented optimism about life.

FUN!: Which Classic Movie Matches You, Based on Your Birth Month

June

With playful spirits and youthful hope, those born in June are free thinkers. They strive to see things from multiple perspectives simultaneously, leading with an open mind. Whether they are social Geminis or compassionate Cancers, they trust their inner wisdom to guide them toward meaningful answers. Curiosity is their superpower. Rather than dismissing ideas outright, they look deeper. Because they want to experience things firsthand, they often overcome biases and negative thinking, ultimately finding a grounded middle ground that fosters more expansive philosophies. Their optimism is fueled by a genuine desire to learn and find solutions to their problems.

CURIOUS?: The 3 Birth Months With a Natural Gift for Making Any House a Home

August

If you were born in August, you may be a bold Leo or a mindful Virgo. You have a strong personality. Deep down, you believe that people are inherently good, especially when they receive the right resources, attention, and praise. As a result, you tend to be adoring, affectionate, and warm. Your confidence radiates positive energy wherever you go. With a strong desire to lead, inspire, and contribute through acts of service, you are seen as a thoughtful leader by others. You have a knack for finding humor even in challenging times, which helps you persevere. You experience your emotions fully, even if it's sometimes a bit dramatic, allowing you to process and move past them. Ultimately, this journey leads you to positivity and personal growth.

RELATE?: The 4 Birth Months With Natural Charisma

December

Perhaps the most positive birth month is December. People born in December know how to maintain faith during life's darkest moments, much like enduring a long winter's night in their season of birth. Whether you're an adventurous Sagittarius or an ambitious Capricorn, you always look onward and upward. There's a great big world out there, and you intend to explore its potential. While you may have your hang-ups or limiting beliefs like everyone else, you overall seek to be informed and educated, and you’re willing to have your mind changed. Your ability to admit that you don't know everything about everything allows you to turn ignorance into learning opportunities. Your positivity stems from a thirst for growth and a desire to fulfill your highest potential.

Quote of the Day: Socrates on What Wisdom Really Looks Like

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 5:14am

Among the great philosophers’ names, Socrates stands as one of the most notable. Born around 470 BCE, the ancient Greek philosopher is largely to thank for founding Western philosophy and was even a major inspiration for Plato, who was his student. But unlike Plato, Socrates didn’t write anything down; instead, all of his iconic quotes, sayings and insights are from dialogues he had with others that they wrote down. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that we still know his name because of how impactful his words were.

A lot of Socrates’s musings had to do with virtue, and he had a ton of integrity and insight. Though he wasn’t as well-respected at the time—he was kind of out there, was the subject of roasts and ridicule, and was sentenced to death for impiety (so says the ancient Greek authorities, of course)—he was a great teacher and constantly questioned everything. Not only did he do a lot of self-reflection, but he also created a form of argumentation that we know today as the Socratic method, per Britannica

Although he doesn’t have any texts, poems or books he wrote himself, his teachings, thoughts and words live on through others around him at the time. And even though not everything Plato and Xenophon—another prominent student of his—wrote down was verbatim what Socrates said, they’re good guides to figure out who he was. That’s why Parade is highlighting this Socrates quote of the day, because of what it has to say about wisdom and what we can take from it in terms of our own self-reflection.

Quote of the Day by Socrates

CanvaPro/Parade

“Wonder is the beginning of wisdom.”

Again, because Socrates didn’t write things down himself, it’s hard to place this quote directly as to where it came from. Because of his top students and peers relaying his words for him in Greek, there’s also the matter of translations. So while the direct translation is hard to find in different works, this specific quote is a popular one associated with Socrates.

In Plato’s dialogue, Theaetetus, Socrates is in conversation with Theaetetus and Theodorus, and the former says that sometimes his head is swimming with questions all the time, wondering what it all means. To that, Socrates replies that Theodorus was right: Theaetetus was a philosopher. Why?

“... For wonder is the feeling of a philosopher, and philosophy begins in wonder.”

He then says that Iris—a goddess who is the personification of the rainbow and the messenger of the Olympians, specifically the Greek goddess Hera—is the child of Thaumas, who is a sea god and whose name Plato associates with wonder in this dialogue. This means he's equating humans' connection with gods and heaven (Olympus) with a messenger born from wonder.

With all that said, saying wonder spurs on philosophers—who yearn for wisdom and insight—is very Socrates-coded.

Deeper Meaning of Socrates’s Quote: Wisdom

Looking at the quote at face value, Socrates is saying that you can’t just have wisdom and knowledge for the sake of only wanting information. The thing that powers wisdom is wonder; you have to keep wondering and guessing and questioning the world around you in order to gain true wisdom.

It’s kind of like when people say there’s a difference between wisdom and intelligence. You can be smart, but if you don’t have that urge to question things you’re told or things that you learn, you’re not actually wise. If you color within the lines of society and the status quo, you can only reach a certain level of intelligence. Enlightenment and actual wisdom come from thinking outside the box and pushing yourself to keep asking, “Why?”

Wonder can mean a lot of things. It can be your curiosity or contemplation, while also being the emotion you feel as you marvel at something. So to wonder means to really try and see something from all sides; you’re curious to figure this thing out, while also marveling at what makes it tick and why. This can be a physical object, a theory or a concept.

So whether the quote is “philosophy begins in wonder” or “wonder is the beginning of wisdom,” it’s kind of one and the same. With how much Socrates loved to question conformity, it makes sense that he would encourage others to always go beyond what they’re given at face value.

  • “Be slow to fall into friendship, but when thou art in continue firm and constant.”
  • “It is better to change an opinion than to persist in a wrong one.”

8 Coasters Are Named ‘Most Epic’ in the US for 2026

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 5:10am

If your idea of a perfect summer involves the rhythmic clatter of a lift hill and the sheer weightlessness of a vertical drop, the 2026 season is officially your year. American amusement parks are locked in a relentless race for coaster supremacy, moving far beyond the "historic charm" of legacy piers and into a new era of record-shattering engineering.

TheTravelrecently released their definitive list of the year’s most significant thrill rides, noting that today's adrenaline seekers are trading antique carousels for "record-breaking ride experiences that transform amusement parks into heart-pounding adventures."

Leading the charge for the new season is a massive debut in the Lone Star State. According to TheTravel, Tormenta Rampaging Run at Six Flags Over Texas is poised to become an instant legend. The publication highlights its jaw-dropping dimensions, noting the ride "promises to be the 'tallest, fastest and longest' roller coaster of its kind, with six different coaster records set to be broken," including a world-record 179-foot vertical loop.

While Texas claims the loop record, the title for sheer height remains in the Midwest. TheTravel crowns Cedar Point’s revamped Top Thrill 2 as the tallest steel roller coaster in the nation, hitting a staggering 420 feet. For those who prefer distance over height, the list points to North Carolina’s Fury 325 at Carowinds as the longest Giga coaster on the continent, a relentless 6,602-foot high-speed chase that clocks in at 95 miles per hour.

The 2026 rankings also celebrate the specialized designs that give California’s Six Flags Magic Mountain its reputation as a "coaster capital." The park holds three distinct records on this year's list: Wonder Woman Flight of Courage (tallest single-rail coaster), Riddler’s Revenge (tallest stand-up coaster), and Tatsu, which remains the tallest and fastest flying coaster on the planet. For those who prefer an inverted experience, Virginia’s Busch Gardens Williamsburg takes the top spot with Alpengeist, the tallest of its kind in the U.S.

Finally, the list pays homage to the enduring power of timber. Even in an age of high-tech steel, Ohio’s Kings Island still holds the world record for the longest wooden coaster with The Beast. TheTravel describes the ride as the ultimate blend of old and new, allowing riders to "experience the heart-stopping velocity of modern steel coasters with the antique 'rickety' charms of a classic wooden coaster." Whether you are diving, flying or standing, these eight icons represent the absolute peak of the American thrill ride for 2026.

Shop at Walmart

Shoppers loved the “beautiful” design of this “lightweight” quilt and its two included pillow shams— and it’s not hard to see why. A tone-on-tone stitched pattern gives the fabric a rich, dimensional look without feeling busy, blending delicate florals, scrolling vines, and subtle geometric motifs into a softly defined patchwork. Larger medallion-style designs, reminiscent of stylized flowers or mandalas, are scattered across the quilt, while smaller accents — paisley curves, lattice grids, and dotted textures — fill the spaces in between. Varying stitch density creates a gentle embossed effect that catches the light and adds movement, giving the set a slightly vintage, heirloom-inspired feel. The scalloped edges play off the rounded shapes in the print, tying the whole design together.

Reviewers haven't just raved about how pretty the set is — they also loved that it’s “great quality.” Made from 100% double-brushed microfiber with a soft 80 grams per square meter filling, it feels cozy, breathable, and perfect for year-round use. Plus, it’s Oeko-Tex certified, so you can rest easy knowing it’s skin-friendly and free from any potentially harmful chemicals. The fabric is wrinkle-resistant, fade-resistant, and machine washable, which means it stays looking fresh and vibrant without any ironing or trips to the dry cleaner.

You’ll Want to Live in These Drapey Loungewear Pieces—Now Available in a Bold New Color

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Not all loungewear is created equal, and once you realize that, there's no going back. There's the super fuzzy, cozy stuff—the kind you reach for when it's freezing and you want to feel like you're wrapped in a blanket. And then there's the other category: those soft, breathable pieces that just drape perfectly. They're lightweight, flattering, and make you feel a little put-together even when you're fully in lounge mode.

That's actually how I first found Kindred Bravely—when I was pregnant with my third child and living in anything that felt remotely comfortable. The brand's pieces were a lifesaver back then. But what's funny is, I never really stopped wearing them. Even now, long past that stage, I still go back to the brand for those same easy, feel-good staples.

Recently, I revisited Kindred Bravely, and its Aria Bamboo Casual Cropped Short Sleeve Top feels absolutely sumptuous, particularly when paired with the matching Aria lounge pant. The brand has three "core" colorways for these particular pieces (black, granite and redwood), but then sneaks in limited-edition colorways, like the bright red shown here.

As for the material, the bamboo is so buttery. And yes, these two pieces together are absolutely perfect for pregnant women, breastfeeding moms, and anyone looking for postpartum comfort. But here's the secret: Anyone can wear this and feel absolutely wonderful in it.

If you don't want to take my word for it, the reviews on Kindred Bravely's site don't lie.

"I absolutely love the Aria set in black," wrote one customer. "I was gifted this set and it is perfect for both pregnancy and postpartum—so soft, stretchy and incredibly comfortable. The fabric feels amazing on my skin and gives me the flexibility I need during this season of life. Whether I'm lounging at home or running errands, I feel put-together and cozy. Highly recommend to any moms looking for a go-to set that combines comfort and style!"

So, go ahead, kick back, relax and look good while doing it. It's nice to have feel-good options at your fingertips. And you deserve it.
