Lindsay Clancy Trial: How to Watch Live Coverage and Stream the Documentary Online

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 8:08pm

Nearly two years after three innocent kids were found dead inside their own Duxbury, Massachusetts home, a place they were supposed to be safe, their mother is finally standing trial.

Jury selection got underway this week for Lindsay Clancy, the former Massachusetts General Hospital labor and delivery nurse accused of killing her three young children —Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months in 2023.

The mom of three has pleaded not guilty. Her legal team plans to argue that a severe case of postpartum psychosis drove her actions and led to the domestic tragedy, according to the BBC. Prosecutors see it differently, insisting the killings were calculated and far from a moment of losing control.

Public fascination with the case hasn't faded in the months leading up to trial; if anything, it's grown louder. So if you're trying to follow along, here's what you need to know about tuning in.

Stream the Fox Nation Documentary for Free

For those wanting background before the verdict, Fox Nation has released a documentary titled A Mother's Mental State: Inside the Clancy Case, examining the events that led to the charges. It's available now and streamable through a free trial of DirecTV Stream, or through longer-term subscriptions to Fubo or Sling, both of which carry Fox Nation as an add-on channel.

Neither Fubo nor Sling currently offers a free option, so a DirecTV trial remains the only no-cost route to the documentary itself.

Watch the Trial Live on Court TV

The trial is being broadcast live on Court TV, with coverage running since Monday, July 20. Court TV is included in DirecTV Stream's basic package, meaning a free trial subscription covers both the documentary and the live courtroom coverage in one place. Fubo also carries Court TV for viewers who'd rather go that route.

Inside the Case Against Lindsay Clancy

Clancy is accused of using exercise bands to kill her three children in the basement of the family's Duxbury home, as per CNN. She's also said to have attempted to take her own life that same day, slicing her wrists and throat before jumping from the home's second-story window, an attempt that left her paraplegic.

ABC News reported on Monday, July 20, that her attorney, Kevin Reddington, has said he'll argue Clancy should be found not guilty by reason of insanity, describing a voice in her head he attributes to severe postpartum psychosis, one he says was worsened by how her doctors managed her care.

Clancy's husband, Patrick, is expected to testify for the defense, according to the Associated Press. It remains unclear whether Clancy herself will take the stand.

Disney’s Julie Andrews Post Leaves Fans Worried: ‘Please Don’t Scare Me Like That’

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 8:04pm

Disney Plus really thought it was okay to post an image of Julie Andrews in all white that left many pop culture fans on social media momentarily shocked.

It was surprising to open up Instagram today and come across a soft-lit, glowing portrait of our queen of Genovia and favorite nanny, Mary Poppins. For me, it was on a friend's story, in a place with no context. Like so many, I too clicked on the image in a panic, fearing the worst. My heart dropped as I read.

"Courage, resilience, grace," the text loaded slowly, which wouldn't be too far from how an obituary might begin as it accompanied a gorgeous photo of the legendary star of the stage and screen before announcing an upcoming documentary about the beloved actress. Phew!

The heavenly vibes are immaculate (complementary) but still gave so many a jump scare today. Some of the comments hilariously and relatably read:

"The way I immediately thought this was announcing something else. The all white, the soft glow…I thought the gates called her. Thank God it’s not that 😭😭" - @emileennisjr

"The way my heart SANK! So glad I wasn’t alone!" @thenessdiaries_

"You cannot drop a headshot like this in 2026. YOU CANNOT JUST DROP A HEADSHOT LIKE THIS IN THE AGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA 🫥🫠" - @allybo123

"I almost cried and screamed." - @hannah.humphris

"do re mi fa SO IMPORTANT YOU NEVER DO THIS AGAIN!!!" - @abagayilhatt

"Don’t scare me like this! I thought the Queen of Genovia done went to glory" - @_melanynmonroe

"I would like to speak to the social media manager!! 😭" - @alyse.mone

"Super thrilled everyone almost threw up…lead with a warning next time that we haven’t lost our queen! 😅" - @katherine_reaves_official

Fans are clearly distressed about the lack of text on the image that could have prevented the jump scare, but relieved that Andrews has a documentary coming out next year, and of course we all await more updates on The Princess Diaries 3 from Disney. Would love for Julie Andrews to send a video message to D23 Expo assuring us she's still practically perfect in every way.

Zooey Deschanel Reveals How 'New Girl' Pulled Off Nick & Jess's Unforgettable First Kiss

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 8:00pm

Zooey Deschanel is sharing some behind-the-scenes facts about her New Girl character, Jessica "Jess" Day's iconic first kiss with Nick Miller (Jake Johnson).

During a July 2026 interview on the Zach Sang Show, Deschanel, who starred on New Girl throughout its seven-season run until its 2018 finale, was asked if she agreed with some fans who believe Nick and Jess's "first kiss scene [is] the greatest kiss scene in TV history."

"I can't say. I haven't seen like every episode of television. It was a pretty good one though," said Deschanel.

Deschanel then shared that the Season 2, Episode 15 ("Cooler") scene was expertly choreographed.

"We were like, 'Let's block it.' I mean it's, again, it's like music, it's dynamics," said the actress during the interview.

She then explained that she, Johnson, the writers, and directors wanted there to be tension in the scene. They decided that the best course of action was to have Jess start walking back to her bedroom before Nick pulled her in.

"It was almost like scientific because the writers and then Jake and me and we're like trying to figure out like the best way was to have her start to walk away and him grab her. There's many ways kisses happen on screen and you know, creating a dynamic moment is a little bit more challenging because kissing is not that exciting, right? Even if you've been like waiting for this kiss forever," explained the She & Him singer.

During the interview, Deschanel shared that the scene "was a really big moment" on set. According to Deschanel, "ton of writers," the show's creator Liz Meriwether, and the comedy's co-showrunners Brett Baer and Dave Finkel, were watching her and Johnson film the romantic moment.

"I think we had like three-quarters of the writing staff on set for that because it was such an important moment," recalled Deschanel.

Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson Discussed Their Characters' First Kiss During a 2014 Panel

In a 2014 panel at the Paley Center for Media, Deschanel and Johnson discussed filming the season 2 kissing scene. According to Deschanel, the episode's original script didn't end with Jess and Nick's kiss. She also noted that most of "Cooler" involves Nick refusing to give Jess a kiss during the group's drinking game, True American.

"It was interesting because we did the table read and the whole episode, the kiss wasn't in it. And the whole episode was like, Jess is so annoying. So, I was like, 'Great, I feel very unattractive,'" quipped Deschanel during the 2014 panel. "And then they throw this little nugget in, which was pitched to us like on a Tuesday, I think, we shot on a Friday night or something. And I thought it was actually so great in an episode about how annoying Jess is. It really was surprising."

Johnson also said he was pleased that Nick got to have a successful kiss with Jess.

"It was something that I wanted for Nick. And so, I was really glad that Nick didn't screw that up because he could have very easily. He did for the first half of that episode," said Johnson.

What Happened to Elyse Myers? Influencer Details Terrifying Medical Emergency

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 8:00pm

Beloved influencer Elyse Myers shared a terrifying medical emergency

"So, I never went to bed last night, because yesterday afternoon I wasn't really paying attention and accidentally took double my dose of ADHD medication. It's extended-release," she shared via Instagram on Wednesday, July 22. "I already take a relatively very high dose, and it's necessary, but it's not a dose you want to take two of in the middle of the day."

She went on to share that her heart rate began to spike quickly while she was "sitting completely still." The terrifying ordeal and her anxiety led Myers to call 911.

"This was not a normal panic attack. I was trying to tough it out, because I did not want to be the person that calls 911 for a panic attack. But I also don't want to be the person that dies because they don't call 911," she continued. "I had made the decision and asked my husband to call 911 for me."

Myers explained that she recently took a class through the American Heart Association and, because her son is a "heart kid," she had an at-home EKG machine on hand. By the time first responders arrived with a defibrillator, it was not needed.

"I'm so glad I called. There is no world where I would have been able to convince myself that nothing terrible was about to happen," she added. "I knew deep in my soul, this felt really really different. There is nothing in my body that recognized the severity and the depth of that feeling. Nothing but a medical professional was going to reassure me."

The That's a Great Question, I'd Love to Tell You author shared a PSA to followers to "be careful when taking medication."

"TLDR: I am safe! Just have a migraine, no sleep, and a gnarly anxiety hangover, and I’m sooooo glad I asked Jonas to call for help," she captioned her post.

The TikTok star has been open about her struggles with anxiety and mental health in the past, including during an "OCD trigged panic attack" in September 2024.

"Tonight, out of nowhere, I felt like I got hit by a train," she shared at the time. "The bad news is: it sucked very much. The good news is: I have a partner who would spend his entire night telling me everything is okay and would drive to my office to convince me nothing is plugged in and nothing was left on...I wasn’t okay. But Jonas had enough 'Okay' for the both of us to make me feel okay."

For the Wheel of Fusion challenge, the home chefs were taken out of their comfort zone as they had to fuse whatever cuisine the wheel landed on with their own culture.

Team Europe ended up with Japanese, Asia-Pacific landed on French cuisine, the Americas wound up with Nigerian, and Africa fused with Greek after the spin.

But as the winner of last week’s Immunity Pin, Team Europe’s Julia was given the advantage of changing any team’s fusion. She chose to move to Team Africa to fuse with Australia.

The top dishes:

  • Team Asia-Pacific: Aishu – Indian-Inspired Coq au Vin
  • Team Europe: Aghata – Arroz Negro with Tuna Tataki
  • Team Africa: Peter – Wattleseed and Beer Battered Cod
  • Team Americas: Maria – Suya Spiced Lamb Shank

The top dish and winner of the Immunity Pin was Maria.

“I won the Immunity Pin, I can’t believe it,” she said. “I am the first person to win the Immunity Pin for the Americas, and I am saving my team today. I am so excited.”

Who was in the MasterChef: Global Gauntlet bottom three this week?

Maria’s win meant Team Americas was safe, so the bottom dishes were pulled from the remaining three areas.

Team Asia-Pacific: Shompa – Frog Leg Tomato Bhuna
Team Europe: Basia – Miso Glazed Cod
Team Africa: Rita – Herb Crusted Lamb

In a surprise twist, there was another double elimination as the judges felt that the two eliminated cooks made major mistakes and neither dish met the standards the judges were looking for. Going home were Shompa and Rita.

“I’ve enjoyed myself so much,” Shompa said. “The fact that I got to cook in the MasterChef kitchen, I’ve been dreaming of baking in the MasterChef kitchen since I was a kid and I can’t believe I made my dreams come true. I am disappointed to be going home but I am so proud of myself. Former NBA Superstar Shares Sweet Photo With His Dog, but His Fans Are Focused on Something Else

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 7:52pm

For more than a decade, Blake Griffin, 37, was one of the most recognizable and entertaining stars in the NBA. Known for his explosive athleticism, unforgettable dunks, and championship-worthy sense of humor, Griffin helped usher in a new era of basketball in Los Angeles when he became the face of the Los Angeles Clippers. Griffin retired in 2024 after 14 seasons in the NBA, but a recent photo meant to showcase his gorgeous Golden Retriever puppy during a beach day in Malibu accidentally put his fit physique on display—a reminder of the physical excellence many professional athletes carry with them long after they finish playing the game.

Blake Griffin's Dog Photo Had Fans Looking Twice View this post on Instagram

In a post captioned "Dog days of summer," Griffin and his adorable pup are seen playing on the beach before heading to the famed Malibu Country Mart for some shopping. Tuckered out from a day hanging with its superstar dad, the precious pooch is eventually seen snoozing alongside an older canine companion.

Just about the only thing that could distract Griffin's fans from the dog's overwhelming cuteness was Griffin himself, photographed shirtless on the beach.

Intentional thirst trap or accidental ab reveal? Fans were quick to weigh in either way.

"More like Ab days of summer," joked one clever fan.

Another wrote, "Absolute thirst trap."

"My boy still more fit than any other NBA player right now," commented another.

"Blake living the good life," added one more.

Blake Griffin Became the Face of the Clippers

Blake Griffin does indeed seem to be living the good life, and with good reason. The University of Oklahoma standout entered the NBA in 2009 as the No. 1 overall pick by the Los Angeles Clippers. Although he missed his first season because of injury, Griffin immediately lived up to the hype the following year, winning NBA Rookie of the Year in 2011 and becoming one of the league's most exciting young stars.

Known for his creative dunks, Griffin's athleticism and power made him a highlight-reel sensation. His famous sense of humor, combined with his superstar status, made him one of the first NBA stars of the social media era.

Griffin spent eight seasons with the Clippers, playing alongside Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, and others. Together, Griffin and Paul transformed the Clippers from Los Angeles' second basketball team behind the Lakers into one of the NBA's biggest attractions during the "Lob City" era.

Life After Basketball Looks Good on Blake Griffin View this post on Instagram

Before retiring in 2024, Griffin also played for the Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, and Boston Celtics. Although injuries affected the latter part of his career, he remained respected for his high basketball IQ, willingness to adapt, and strong chemistry with teammates.

Since stepping away from the game, Griffin has remained active on social media and has continued making appearances on celebrity roasts, talk shows, and commercials, always displaying the same quick wit and willingness to laugh at himself that made him such a popular personality during his playing days.

Now enjoying retirement, Griffin's commitment to fitness and an active lifestyle serves as a reminder that he still carries the athletic presence that made him a superstar. His recent social media post caught fans' attention not because he appeared to be making a statement—although a few marriage proposals appeared in the comment section—but because it showed that the former NBA star still looks every bit like the athlete fans remember.

For fans who watched Blake Griffin effortlessly soar above defenders during the Clippers' "Lob City" era, the images serve as a nostalgic reminder of one of professional basketball's most exciting personalities. One of the rare athletes whose celebrity extended well beyond his sport, Blake Griffin became a beloved figure both on and off the court, and his connection with fans remains just as strong today as it was the first time they watched him throw down a spectacular dunk.

1977 Rock Song, Written by an 18-Year-Old, Remains a Classic 49 Years Later

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 7:50pm

Forty-nine years ago, iconic English rock band The Jam released "In The City"—a song that has persevered as a lasting classic and was famously written by a teenager.

Released on April 29, 1977 as the title track and lead single for their debut studio album, "In The City" was a notable success. Although the song never quite entered the US Billboard Hot 100, it became a Top 40 hit on the UK Singles Chart—marking a distinct mainstream breakthrough moment in the beginning of their career.

Since its release, the song, alongside its parent album, has been showered in acclaim and compared to other legendary rock acts by industry professionals. In 1977, NME journalist Phil McNeil notably praised Paul Weller's songwriting, writing that the track "captures that entire teen frustration vibe with the melodic grace and dynamic aplomb of early Kinks and Who."

Paul Weller, Rick Buckler and Bruce Foxton of the English punk rock band The Jam perform on stage at punk club The Roxy, Covent Garden, in London, on February 24, 1977.

Erica Echenberg/Redferns

Although the song is frequently highlighted as a masterclass in punk rock songwriting, it was actually penned by frontman Paul Weller when he was only 18 years old. "In The City" was heavily inspired by the contemporary punk acts he had seen live in London during the mid-'70s, including The Clash and Sex Pistols. The track borrows from their classic driving sound, amplifying its lyricism about being young and watching the world change around you.

In a 2011 interview with Q magazine, Weller reflected on the time when he wrote the song, noting the excitement and optimism young people were experiencing in the city.

“I was probably 18, so it was a young man’s song, a suburbanite dreaming of the delights of London and the excitement of the city," Weller said. "It was an exciting time to be alive. London was coming out of its post-hippy days and there was a new generation taking over. The song captured that wide-eyed innocence of coming out of a very small community and entering a wider world, seeing all the bands, meeting people, going to the clubs, and the freedom that it held.”

Weller's lyrics about optimistic youth culture captured the energy of the rising generation. Despite being written for a specific moment in time, the song's relevance persists among young people five decades after its initial release.

Through the digital era, "In The City" has maintained steady popularity. On Spotify alone, the song has garnered over 31 million streams, attesting to its ability to bridge the gap between generations of listeners.

Fans Drag Larry David for Not Knowing the Answer to This Basic Trivia Question

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 7:45pm

Larry Davidleft fans baffled after admitting he didn't know the answer to what many considered an easy trivia question.

The Seinfeldco-creator appeared alongside his daughter, Cazzie David, on the season premiere of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on July 22. In Wednesday's episode, the pair tackled a question about breakfast cereal—and Larry's answer (or lack thereof) quickly caught viewers' attention.

Host Jimmy Kimmel asked which cereal is known for its colorful "marbits," or marshmallow bits, with the choices being Raisin Bran, Cap'n Crunch, Cookie Crisp, and Lucky Charms. Cazzie immediately identified Lucky Charms as the correct answer, but her father looked completely confused.

When she explained that the cereal contains marshmallows, Larry, 79, responded, "It does?" Cazzie couldn't believe it, joking, "Yeah, do you not know about…do you not know about cereals?"

Larry admitted he'd always assumed Lucky Charms were simply "these colored fruit things," prompting his daughter to explain that they were actually marshmallows. Even then, he remained skeptical, asking, "Are you positive?"

View this post on Instagram

The exchange only got funnier when Larry confessed he'd never eaten Lucky Charms, Cookie Crisp or Cap'n Crunch. Cazzie laughed that they almost would have needed to use a lifeline for a cereal question, while Kimmel joked Larry's lack of sugary cereal consumption "explains a lot."

Larry, however, stood by one breakfast staple: "I've had Raisin Bran.”

What are fans saying about the moment?

Its safe to say fans didn’t hold back on social media.

“This is wild considering what a big part cereal played in the context of ‘Seinfeld,’” one person wrote.

“Even if you dont eat cereal... you know Lucky Charms has marshmallows,” another insisted.

Another asked, “Are we sure this isn’t a bit?”

“Paging Jerry Seinfeld! To quote George Costanza: ‘His whole life revolves around Superman and cereal!’ a fourth replied, quoting the famous sitcom.

The season premiere of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire aired July 22, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, with episodes available to stream the following day on Hulu.

Who is Cazzie David?

Cazzie, 32, is the eldest daughter of Larry and his ex-wife, environmental activist and producer Laurie David, who was married to the Curb Your Enthusiasm star from 1993 until their divorce in 2007. Following in her father's footsteps, she's built a career as a writer, actress and filmmaker, creating the web series Eighty-Sixed, publishing the essay collection No One Asked for This and appearing in projects including The Umbrella Academy and I Love You Forever.

Tiger Woods' Son Charlie Eliminated in Strange U.S. Junior Amateur Camera Click Playoff Moment That's Going Viral

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 7:43pm

Tiger Woodsisn’t the only celebrity golfer in the family. The 50-year-old’s son, 17-year-old Charlie Woods, is a budding sports star. But while the younger Woods stood a chance of making it into the match-play portion of the U.S. Junior Amateur for the first time, it seems that a fan’s noisy camera dashed the teen’s hopes.

What happened to Charlie Woods at the U.S. Junior Amateur?

On Tuesday, Charlie qualified as one of the top 64 players who would return to Saucon Valley’s Grace Course in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for a 14-for-2 playoff. On Wednesday morning, everything appeared to be on track for Tiger’s son. That is, until his third shot on the par 5 hole. So what exactly dashed the boy’s hopes? It’s easy to see, or rather hear, what happened next. The sound of a noisy phone camera throws Charlie off in mid-backswing, causing him to miss the shot.

After the more-than-obvious camera click, the teen throws his club onto the ground and says, “Really dude? I mean, come on.” The teen ended up making a bogey, rather than a birdie, ending his chance to advance.

What do fans think about Tiger Woods’ son and the camera click incident?

After the video popped up on Instagram, fans flocked to the post, giving their unsolicited opinions on the camera click and Charlie’s reaction.

One commenter asked, “Who is taking pictures without a phone on silent…At a golf tournament?”, as others added, “Loudest camera click sound in history,” and “The shutter happened at the beginning of the downswing. No chance to stop.”

View this post on Instagram

While Charlie had plenty of supporters who bashed the noisy photographer, some critics questioned the 17-year-old’s concentration: “Earl used to prep Tiger for this kinda stuff by throwing tees, and other things while he was swinging to help him with distractions and why he was able to stop mid downswing so many times. Tiger gotta do that with Charlie”, “Distractions happen. No free replay,” and “Dad wouldn’t have been distracted.”

Fans were also divided in the comments section of another Instagram post featuring the same video. Some wrote, “Quiet is the standard. So you prepare and play with that expectation, so when a foreign noise comes in, it just disrupts,” and, “How do people not understand how wildly distracting this is?”

Others responded with a less positive take: “Should have done the Tiger pause” and, “Can’t handle a little bit of noise.”

Does Charlie Woods have a future in golf?

Yes, the talented young golfer has a bright future ahead of him. Even though he just completed his junior year of high school, he has already verbally committed to play college golf at Florida State University in 2027.

1970s Country Legend Celebrates 50-Year Milestone with Special New Releases

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 6:27pm

RebaMcEntire is celebrating 50 years of music with, well, more music.

The country singer and actress spoke to Varietyabout her legendary career. Throughout her five-decade career, she sold over 75 million records worldwide and had 100 singles reach the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. She knew she had to do something big for her golden anniversary in music.

McEntire is coming out with a series of EPs. She will include one newly recorded track with a few of her past hits. The singer credits her manager, JustinMcIntosh, with this idea.

“It’s genius to be able to bring a new song to the fans along with five songs that are in the catalog,” McEntire said. “I think it’s a genius idea because even when you are at a concert, you say, ‘OK, I’m gonna play you a new song.’ Everybody goes, ‘oh yeah,’ but they want to hear familiarity.

She continued: “They want to hear songs where they can sing along and they know the words and it takes them back to a place the first time they heard it, or with their best friend or someone they love. So to prepare a brand new song with older songs that they already are familiar with and they love is genius. And I’m so glad to be a part of this project.”

The "Just a Little Love" singer began the EP release in April and will continue until December.

McEntire spoke to Variety about another project close to her heart, her NBCsitcomHappy’s Place

“There is something about a four-camera TV show. It’s nostalgic. It takes you back. It takes me back to my childhood when I was watching four camera television shows and absolutely loving it. It’s funny. It’s family entertainment," the singer said.

She continued, "It’s great writing, great actors. Rex and I love to be on the show together for one thing. And then getting to work again with [co-star [ MelissaPeterman and then my showrunners KevinAbbott and our producers Mindy [Schultheis] and Michael [Hanel] — everybody on that whole team. They are family. And we treat them like family. And, everybody knows that when you walk on ‘Happy’s Place’ set, we’re going to have a good time and you’re going to be treated well.”

Avoid Using This Phrase That ‘Reinforces a Cycle of Pessimism,’ Psychologists Warn

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 6:18pm

There are so many things in this world that can get you down. Whether it’s personal or just *gestures wildly* all of this going on around us, it seems like there’s a never-ending number of forces—seen and unseen—working on your downfall (or at the very least, working to ruin your day). Thanks to that, and just the way negative thinking can work, it can be very easy to slip into a doom spiral. Any one of us can fall into the trap of negative self-talk, but there’s one phrase to avoid that can reinforce a cycle of pessimism, psychologists say.

Some of us might be more prone to catastrophizing or having bleak self-talk than others, but having this one thought often can bring even the most positive people down. If you don’t reframe negative thoughts, you could start to believe this thought and then others. And before you know it, that discouraging cycle is cycling, for sure.

Parade previously spoke with three psychologists to get answers on common phrases that unhappy people use without even realizing it: Dr. Patricia Dixon, Dr. Kiki Ramsey and Dr. Caitlin Slavens. With their insight, we’re highlighting one particular phrase that can really bring you down. Plus, subtle signs you’re stuck in a negative self-talk loop and how to stop the cycle of pessimism.

The Psychology Behind ‘Nothing Ever Works Out for Me’

The phrase that can emphasize negative self-talk is “nothing ever works out for me.”

“This phrase reflects a constant state of discouragement, leading unhappy individuals to expect negative outcomes,” Dr. Dixon previously told Parade. “It reinforces a cycle of pessimism and hopelessness.”

This phrase is also an example of overgeneralization, or a “cognitive distortion in which an individual views a single event as an invariable rule,” per the American Psychological Association (APA). For instance, if you fail at one task, that will then “predict an endless pattern of defeat in all tasks.”

Dr. Ramsey also noted this phrase and said that it might also establish a victim complex or mentality.

“This phrase also reflects a belief that life is fundamentally unfair or stacked against a person,” she shared at the time. “It’s often used when someone feels stuck or defeated.”

Why Psychologists Warn This Reinforces a Cycle of Pessimism

Unsplash

In general, Dr. Dixon had shared that “using Debbie Downer-esque phrases can be mentally harmful because words hold significant power.”

We might all be our biggest judge, but when that inner critic becomes demeaning, discouraging and just downright mean, it’s hard to claw your way out of such a deep cycle of pessimism. Plus, you start to believe the bad things you think about yourself after a while. Again, those words are powerful, for better or worse.

“The language you use shapes your reality, and when you consistently express negative thoughts, they create a mental cage of pessimism,” Dr. Dixon continued. “This mindset acts as a lens through which you view the world, fostering a lack of hope and a toxic outlook.”

She even pointed to research that showed “a positive mindset contributes not only to better mental and emotional health, but also to physical well-being.”

“By changing how you speak, you can transform your life,” the psychologist stated. “Constant negative thoughts weigh heavily on a person, shifting your perspective to a ‘half-empty’ view of life. This negativity can amplify hyper-vigilance towards unfavorable situations, overshadowing the positive experiences around you.”

Subtle Signs You Are Trapped in a Negative Self-Talk Loop

Based on other phrases the psychologists shared with Parade at the time, here are some other subtle signs that you might be trapped in a negative self-talk loop. If you’re saying these things to yourself, or constantly having these thoughts, it might mean you’re trapped in this pessimistic cycle.

  • You feel like no one ever listens to you, stemming from feeling lonely and misunderstood.
  • You feel discouraged, leading to you feeling apathetic or like you just don’t care or shouldn’t even try.
  • You might ask yourself, “Why does this always happen to me?” which adds to victimhood and self-pity, essentially fueling the negative self-talk loop even more.
  • You often think, “I’m so tired of this,” about many things in your life (work, challenges at home, etc.), which keeps you stuck in that discomfort.
  • You feel like you’re not meant to be happy, enjoy nice things or have wins.
  • You simultaneously feel like you always mess everything up, while also thinking that the world is against you and you can never catch a break.
  • You feel like others just don’t care about you.

How To Break the Pessimistic Loop

It makes sense that you’d want to better yourself if this sounds like you or something you think often. First, let’s rehash what it means if you think this phrase, and how to stop the cycle of pessimism you’re stuck in.

What does it mean when you feel like nothing ever works out?

As our psychologist experts said, if you have this thought, you might be in a downward spiral of hopelessness. You’re despondent, and therefore you’re not going to expect good things to come your way. So that’s why you think, “Oh, well, nothing ever works out for me anyway, so why would it now?”

This overgeneralization becomes a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts, leading to that cycle of pessimism. If you never expect things to go well for you, you won’t try for things and then things won’t work out for you.

A victim mindset or victim mentality—which leads someone to believe that the universe is out to get them and they have no power of their own to change their plight—might also contribute to feeling this way.

How do you stop a cycle of pessimistic thinking?

It’s always a good idea to seek out professional mental health services such as therapy when you’re feeling in a funk that doesn’t seem to go away. And you should especially see your therapist if you know or suspect you have a mental health issue or have gone through a traumatic of negative life-changing event. A therapist or psychiatrist will be able to help you work through any root causes and walk you through techniques to help your pessimistic thinking and overgeneralization.

It’s also important to practice mindfulness, which a therapist can also help you with. Being mindful of your thoughts can obviously help you when you’re talking down to yourself or putting yourself down before you even start something.

One way to help that Dr. Slavens shared is to ask yourself, “What’s one small, simple thing I can do to feel better right now?”

“This is a powerful phrase for anyone who’s feeling unhappy to try saying because rather than remaining glued to negative patterns, it invites curiosity and baby steps toward change,” she revealed.

She also noted that “unhappiness is often accompanied by a sense of helplessness,” which turns this question you’re asking yourself into a reminder that you have agency and power, “however small it may be.”

“It’s also actionable because instead of lingering in abstracted emotions, this phrase pushes whoever is saying it toward some concrete, doable action, whether it’s going for a walk, getting in touch with a friend or just drinking water,” the psychologist pointed out. “In addition to those things, it promotes momentum as well because when someone wins small, their confidence grows. One positive act can then trigger a cascade of actions that lead to a better overall mood.”

There's really nothing like a gorgeous hand-stitched quilt, passed down through generations. I have several family heirloom quilts made by my great, great-grandmother that I'm absolutely terrified to use because if I were to spill something on them, they can't be easily laundered. Knowing that they'd fall apart in the washing machine, I keep them carefully displayed on a blanket ladder instead of on a bed. If you also love the look of an heirloom quilt, but can't justify sleeping with an antique you might ruin, Martha Stewart's bedding collection is worth a look — especially when it's on sale.

Beloved for bringing timeless elegance and practical luxury to everyday living, Martha Stewart Layered Branches 3-Piece Full/Queen Quilt Set looks beautiful without being fussy. Normally $180, it's on sale for $120, but an additional discount with the code DORMROOM at checkout drops the final price to just $78, which is an absolute steal for a quilt set of this quality.

1980 Hit, Voted One of the Top 5 Best Yacht Rock Songs of the ’80s, Became a Soft Rock Anthem

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 6:14pm

Olivia Newton-John cast a spell with her 1980 hit “Magic.” A massive hit that spent weeks dominating Billboard’s charts, the soft rock classic is still enchanting listeners more than 45 years later, recently earning the No. 4 spot onSiriusXM’s fan-voted listof the best yacht rock songs of the 1980s.

“For four weeks in 1980, Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Magic’ sat atop the Billboard Hot 100,” the outlet wrote. “Its dreamy atmosphere and effortless melody make it one of the smoothest pop hits of the decade.”

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

Regarded as the gold standard of West Coast synth-pop, “Magic” seamlessly blends high-end studio polish with the nautical groove that’s the signature of the yacht rock genre.

Newton-John keeps her vocal delivery breathy yet effortless, while the lush, multilayered instrumentation drives the song but keeps it danceable and smooth. Overall, the song is a breezy production that’s helped it become a natural fit for modern yacht rock playlists.

Released in the summer of 1980, “Magic” is the opening track on the Xanadu (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), which also features bangers from the British rock band Electric Light Orchestra. And even though the musical fantasy starring Newton-John, Gene Kelly, and Michael Beck was a big flop at the box office, the soundtrack was an absolute smash.

Certified double platinum, the album and its mix of disco, pop, and rock became a massive commercial success, yielding five Top 20 singles, including “Magic,” “Xanadu,” and “All Over the World.”

In 2011, Newton-John revisited “Magic” for a remix with fellow Aussies Steve Peach and DJ Dan Murphy, sponsored by the humanitarian group WACCI. All proceeds from the song were donated to Newton-John’s cancer charity and wellness center. The world premiere of the song was presented on the Australian edition of Dancing With the Stars in May 2011.

“I have a wonderful life, and I realize I’m very fortunate,” the singer said in a 2011 chat with Interview. “I think a lot of people lose a sense of reality when they achieve success. That’s a terrible danger because you have to remember … that you’re still a person and all that out there is a kind of magic.”

Newton-John died in 2022 after a decades-long battle with breast cancer. But she never confused celebrity with substance, adding in her interview, “What people see out there is magic; it’s media magic. It’s not very real, and it’s very glamorous, but you have to keep a sense of you through it all.”

The real magic, as it turns out, was the music she left behind—songs like “Magic” that continue to soundtrack summers and win over generations of new fans.
