Growing up in New England, I know firsthand that summers aren't complete without a few things: lobster rolls, a trip to the Cape and, most importantly: all the ice cream you can physically handle. Namely, soft serve. And bonus points if that soft serve comes with a dip. Let me explain.

During my childhood, a suggestion for an after-dinner trip for ice cream to Sweets and Eats (RIP), my favorite little soft-serve stand in Seymour, Connecticut, was music to my ears. My order never changed: vanilla soft serve (never chocolate) in a cake cone, dunked in a crispy, sugary shell coating. There was something magical about watching the liquid harden into a crisp shell over the ice cream before taking that first bite. Cherry, piña colada, peanut butter—the dip flavor combinations with your ice cream were endless, and it's one of those specific summer childhood memories that I very much cherish.

So imagine my excitement when I stumbled across a recipe from TikTok creator @lilypcrumbsfor homemade cake batter-flavored magic shell. The reel immediately had my attention because, well, I've been chasing that sweet summer high since 1999 and this recipe looked like it might be the real deal. Naturally, I had to find out for myself.

What Is the Viral Cake Batter 'Magic Shell'?

If you've never had Magic Shell before (or it's simply been a while), it's an ice cream topping that hardens almost instantly when it hits something frozen. Traditional versions combine chocolate and coconut oil to create that signature snap that's made it a freezer staple for decades. (And yes, there's the Hershey's version in a bottle, but we're going for something a little more special here.)

Ingredients Needed

The recipe calls for ¼ cup of dry Funfetti cake mix (heat-treated, if following the original recipe), 11 ounces of white chocolate, 85 grams of coconut oil, a splash of vanilla extract and plenty of rainbow sprinkles.

How To Make the Viral Cake Batter 'Magic Shell'

Following the original recipe, spread the cake mix onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake it at 250°F for 20 minutes, then let it cool completely.

Meanwhile, melt the white chocolate, coconut oil and vanilla together in the microwave in 30-second intervals until smooth.

Once everything is silky, stir in the cooled cake mix before folding in a generous handful of rainbow sprinkles.

The Food Science: Why You MUST Heat-Treat the Cake Mix

One thing worth noting is the cake mix. The recipe calls for heat-treating the dry mix before stirring it into the chocolate. Why? We'll let the expert explain.

Paul Adams, senior science research editor at Cook's Illustrated and America's Test Kitchen, says that you shouldn't skip this important step.

"The intended purpose of heat-treating the boxed cake mix is to kill off harmful bacteria, such as Salmonella, which is sometimes found in the raw flour it contains," Adams tells Parade.

However, he notes that heating dry cake mix in a home oven or microwave isn't guaranteed to make it safe. For anyone who wants the same nostalgic flavor without using cake mix, he recommends using a cake batter flavoring instead, which delivers a very similar taste.

Recipe Review: My Honest Thoughts

Not only did my apartment smell of birthday cake from heating up the cake mix, but is there really anything better than rainbow sprinkles and vanilla ice cream (I'll wait)?

This was a super easy recipe. Instead of the paper-thin coating you sometimes get from bottled Magic Shell, this had a thicker, more satisfying snap that reminded me much more of the dipped cones I grew up eating. Every spoonful shattered into crunchy little pieces before melting into the vanilla ice cream underneath, like a little bonus bite.

Flavor-wise, it absolutely delivered on the cake batter promise. The white chocolate creates a creamy base without overpowering the other flavors, while the vanilla helps to give it that unmistakable birthday cake taste. This was a total win, and I can't wait to "crack" the code on other shell flavors later this summer (sorry, I had to).

3 Tips To Keep in Mind

1. If you follow the original recipe, know that home heat-treating cake mix isn't guaranteed to eliminate bacteria. Adams suggests using a cake batter flavoring for a similar taste.
2. Remember that you can pour this on sundaes or use it in a deep container to dip a coneful of ice cream, just like at the ice cream shop.
3. Don't limit yourself to white chocolate. Experiment with dark or milk for a slightly different flavor with the same festive sprinkles.

During the filming of the movie in Durango, Mexico, John Candy died in his sleep on March 4, 1994, after suffering a heart attack. He was 43 years old. While Wagons East! was the last movie Candy filmed, it was not the final film released during his career. Canadian Bacon, which had been completed before his untimely death, was released in 1995.

Production on Wagons East! was completed after Candy’s death using script revisions, stand-ins, and careful editing, allowing the film to be released later that year.

FIFA rotation rules prohibit a nation from immediate re-hosting within the same continental confederation. The earliest any country in North America could potentially host would be in 2038.

Todd Rundgren wrote a soft rock track in 1977 with his band Utopia titled "Love is the Answer," but it didn't reach the charts until it was reimagined in 1979 by the soft rock duo England Dan & John Ford Coley.

Released as part of their Oops! Wrong Planet album, the track wasn't released as a single and never entered the charts. At the time it was released, Rundgren and the band were simply looking for a track to add to their album. They felt it needed a hopeful song compared to other tracks like "Trapped," "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell," and "The Martyr."

"Well it's funny. We were doing an album at the time, and usually we try and be collaborative when we write the songs, because we had made an agreement that we would share the publishing on all of our songs so that specific writers don't get the credit. But that was a song that I came up with," explained Rundgren to SongFacts.

"We put it on a bummer album like Oops! Wrong Planet, thinking maybe we need to put something a little hopeful on it."

While not a hit for Utopia, the track still holds meaning to Rundgren, as he performed the track every night while touring with Ringo Starr's "All Starr Band" in 2015. While on tour, Ringo had a "three-hit rule" for his guests, with Todd going with "I Saw the Light," "Bang the Drum All Day," and "Hello It's Me." The last track Ringo realized didn't fit, and Rundgren convinced him to include "Love Is the Answer" despite it not having been a hit.

"Ringo has his 'three hit rule,' And I'm taking advantage of a technicality in that "Love Is The Answer" was a hit, but it wasn't a hit for me or Utopia, it was a hit for England Dan & John Ford Coley," he explained.

Two years after the track was released, England Dan & John Ford Coley released their own version as their lead single from their seventh studio album, Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jive. Their version would become the most popular among fans and cemented itself as a love anthem.

"Love is the Answer" by the soft rock duo landed them at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also led them to top the Adult Contemporary chart at No. 1 for two weeks. Dan Seals would revisit the track in 1995 and release an acoustic country version, and Coley also released his version in 2008.

"Of all the songs we released as singles, that was my favorite. The song first of all had a classical base, and the middle had a gospel section which I loved," said Coley.

Anson Mount is sharing some insight into the upcoming fourth season of the Paramount+ series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which premieres on July 23.

During an appearance on the July 22 episode of The View, Mount, who plays Captain Christopher Pike, mentioned a Season 4 episode wherein members of the U.S.S. Enterprise seemingly have turned into puppets. As fans of Star Trek: SNW are aware, a teaser trailer for Season 4 showed Pike in puppet form sitting in the Captain's chair.

Mount explained that the show's writers use different genres to explore the inner workings of the characters on Star Trek: SNW. He pointed to the Season 2 musical episode, "Subspace Rhapsody," that helped propel "a lot of emotional transition."

He then said that the implementation of puppets was something the cast had dared the writers to put into an episode.

"This came out of a dare, basically, that we made to the writers. And I never thought it would happen. And then it did," said Mount in the July 2026 interview.

Mount also shared that he was impressed by the puppets, which were made at Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and the puppeteers.

"To see these incredible puppetry artists come aboard and take our work and do what they did with it, it was really something to watch," said Mount while filming The View episode.

Rebecca Romijn and Celia Rose Gooding Shared That They Were Excited About the Puppets While Shooting Season 4

In a July 2026 interview with HeyUGuys, alongside Mount,Rebecca Romijn, who plays Una Chin-Riley, and Celia Rose Gooding, who plays Nyota Uhura, shared how they felt about the Season 4 puppets. Romijn suggested she wasn't initially sure how the writers were going to pull off a puppet episode of Star Trek. However, she assured that "somehow they managed to work it into the conceit within Star Trek."

"It does work," said Romijn during the HeyUGuys interview.

Romijn also said that she and her co-stars interacted with the puppeteers.

"The puppeteers were all there at the table read, and they recorded the table read, and we re-recorded our dialogue for the puppeteers so they could really get a handle on our characters. So yeah, we didn't get to spend a lot of time on set because it was a very different process from how we typically shoot, and they had us very busy with reshoots and preparing for the next episode," said Romijn.

In addition, she said she and her co-stars "got to meet the puppets in the episode that [they] were shooting prior." Both she and Gooding admitted that the puppets were "very distracting."

"They brought all of the puppets, and we all literally ran off," shared Romijn.

Romijn was also quick to clarify that the Star Trek: SNW stars "didn't get to take [their] puppets home."

Marie Osmond has earned several No. 1 country hits, but it was the song “Paper Roses” that launched her to superstardom. 

Though the icon’s brothers, The Osmonds, were already an established act in the entertainment industry (especially Donny Osmond), when “Paper Roses” was released, the then-teenager ultimately showcased her ability to step out on her own as a young solo artist with a bright future ahead. However, according to Songfacts, Osmond caught a few nerves when she recorded “Paper Roses” in the studio, despite coming from a musical family.

"I remember walking in the studio and thinking, 'Good grief!' I'd seen my brothers do all this stuff, but it's really different when all of a sudden everybody's waiting for you to sing it right," Osmond told Barry Scott, author of the 1994 book We Had Joy, We Had Fun, according to the outlet. 

Osmond released "Paper Roses" at the tender age of just 14. And while her famous Donnie & Mariemusical partnership and ABC variety show would come later, she ended up scoring follow-up solo hits like “There’s No Stopping Your Heart” and “Read My Lips.” 

Written by Fred Spielman and Janice Torre, and produced by Sonny James, “Paper Roses” shares a reminder that love isn’t always genuine, with the singer acknowledging her realization that the love she received wasn’t real. The song uses the term paper roses as a metaphor to describe a romance that seems true on the surface, but is actually artificial and lacks sincerity. 

“Paper Roses” was originally released by singer and activist Anita Bryant, scoring her a Top 5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960. Osmond repeated that success, and managed to tie Bryant on the pop chart when her ‘70s version peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. 

Released on August 25, 1973, and appearing on her debut solo album of the same name, “Paper Roses” served as Osmond’s first single to radio and first song as a solo performer. Aside from being a Top 5 hit, the track topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary and Hot Country Songs charts, and became an international triumph, charting in the U.K., South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada and Australia. 

Additionally, Osmond made history with her delivery of “Paper Roses.” Upon topping the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart at age 14, she became the youngest female artist and the youngest overall solo artist to achieve that feat at the time. While she had plenty of musical success after “Paper Roses,” Osmond hoped to repeat the same formula with a cover of Bryant’s 1960 hit, “My Little Corner of the World.” However, that song failed to match its predecessor’s impact, only reaching No. 33 on the country chart.

Ginger Zee doesn't need to wait around for Halloween to shake up her style and channel a look made famous by a '60s sitcom icon.

The chief meteorologist showed off her new style on social media, revealing that her hairstylist transformed her hair into the iconic I Dream of Jeannie ponytail for a morning broadcast. The throwback hairstyle quickly brought out her playful side, as she joked that the look made her “insufferable” because she couldn’t resist recreating Jeannie’s signature nose twitch, head nod, and blink whenever she used her magical powers.

The clip was set to the sitcom's iconic theme song, pushing Zee even further into character and showing off her on-set personality that continues to keep viewers both informed and entertained.

The video finds the 45-year-old in a navy dress with white, red and gold detailing, as she crosses her arms in front of her chest, just like Barbara Eden would do when playing the powerful genie.

I Dream of Jeannie, the beloved fantasy sitcom, premiered in Sep. 15, 1965, and ran for 5 seasons, focusing on astronaut Tony Nelson, who discovered a beautiful genie after his spacecraft lands in a deserted island. Upon freeing her from the bottle, she becomes devoted to him and uses her magical powers to help him, oftentimes complicating everyday life, despite the best of intentions, leading to a series of comedic mishaps that keep audiences laughing.

Eden, now 94, starred as Jeannie, with Larry Hagman as Tony Nelson, whose chemistry, along with the whimsical storylines, made the series one of television’s most recognizable sitcoms of the era.

When filming began in 1991 for the women's baseball comedy A League of Their Own, Rosie O'Donnell had recently watched Truth or Dare. Thanks to the documentary, which followed Madonna's Blond Ambition World Tour, O'Donnell already knew a few things about her new co-star. One specific detail would cement a lifelong bond between the two.

"I had never met another woman whose mother died and they‘re named after their mother and then when you go to the gravesite, you see your name on the tombstone," O’Donnell told PEOPLE. "The first thing I said was, ‘My mom died when I was young and I was named after her too,’ and it was like we became sisters at that moment."

Her kids, Lola and Rocco, would come over for a playdate when they were little and as soon as she left, I would give them an ice pop and turn on the cartoons. They didn’t get to watch TV. But she’s an amazing mother and those kids are concert pianists and artists and singers."

Yes released "Close to the Edge" in 1972, and radio ignored it almost entirely. The song runs for 18 minutes and 43 seconds. It takes up the entire first side of a vinyl record. In 1972, radio stations played three-minute songs. "Close to the Edge" wasn't a three-minute song. It wasn't close. And yet more than 50 years later, Goldmine Magazine called it the greatest long song ever recorded, across every genre, full stop.

In 1972, three minutes was the length of a song. That was the rule radio had built its entire structure around. Record labels wanted three-minute singles they could promote. Yes were commercially successful at this point. They had options. They could've chased radio. They could've made something shorter and more accessible and probably more profitable.

Instead, they recorded 18 minutes and 43 seconds and called it one piece of music.

The song's lyrics were inspired by Herman Hesse's novel Siddhartha, a meditation on spiritual self-discovery. That context explains what Jon Anderson is doing with his voice throughout. The song opens with nature sounds. Birds, water, the world before anything human intrudes. Then it shifts into something more unsettling, unusual rhythms and a kind of controlled chaos before things settle into a shape you can follow. Rick Wakeman's keyboards give the whole thing its cathedral scale, the sense that you're hearing something being built rather than played. Steve Howe's guitar is what Goldmine calls "unique and wiry," cutting through the architecture Wakeman creates. And then there's Jon Anderson's voice, which Goldmine describes as "speaking in tongues, all mystical and just a little bit scary, like if you follow him and his flowing robe, you're gonna get locked in the church basement."

The church basement line is a joke. It's also accurate.

The ending is completely different. Goldmine calls it "vaulted and heavenly," the kind of finish that makes the previous 17 minutes feel earned rather than self-indulgent. You have to commit to the whole thing before you understand what it was building toward.

Atlantic Records knew radio wouldn't play 18 minutes, so they cut a special radio-only version of the song into 3-to-5 minute segments and distributed it to disc jockeys with markers showing where to cut. Most stations still didn't play it. The album still reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Listeners found it without radio's help.

The cover, painted by Roger Dean, showed floating islands and impossible landscapes. It told you exactly what kind of journey you were about to take before you'd heard a note.

Goldmine's most important sentence about "Close to the Edge" is its most quietly extraordinary: it calls the song the greatest long song of all time "whether you buy into what Yes is selling or not." That qualifier is doing a lot of work. You don't have to love progressive rock. You don't have to care about church organ or mystical vocalists or 18-minute structures. The achievement exists independent of your taste. The song is still the greatest of its kind.

Fifty Years Later, New Ears Are Still Finding It

The five musicians who made "Close to the Edge" never made it again as a unit. Bill Bruford, the drummer whose playing holds the song's most ambitious sections together, found the sessions particularly laborious and left immediately after recording to join King Crimson. Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, Chris Squire and Bruford played together for the last time on that record. Every note carries that weight now whether they knew it at the time or not.

In March 2025, Rhino released a Super Deluxe Edition of Close to the Edge as a five-CD, one-LP and Blu-ray set. New listeners are finding what that lineup made in 1972 through a Dolby Atmos mix by producer Steven Wilson, previously unreleased recordings including alternate mixes and edits, and a two-CD live album recorded at the Rainbow in London on December 16, 1972. The same month the original was being ignored by radio, Yes were playing it live to crowds who understood exactly what they were hearing.

In 2026, vinyl copies of Close to the Edge are still selling. The album radio wouldn't play in 1972 is being pressed onto new vinyl and bought by new listeners more than 50 years later.

As most ordinary viewers are sure to tell you, What About Bob? remains a certified classic of '90s comedy, featuring two of the entertainment industry's most beloved comedic actors.

While Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray might have delivered comedy gold with their energetic chemistry in the film, things were more than a little tense between the two stars behind the scenes.

In a 2009 interview with The AV Club, Dreyfuss reflected on his experiences working with Murray, confessing that he outright "didn't like" the SNL alum during their time on the film.

"Funny movie. Terribly unpleasant experience," Dreyfuss admitted. "We didn’t get along, me and Bill Murray. But I’ve got to give it to him: I don’t like him, but he makes me laugh even now. I’m also jealous that he’s a better golfer than I am. It’s a funny movie. No one ever comes up to you and says, 'I identify with the patient.' They always say, 'I have patients like that. I identify with your character.' No one ever says that they’re willing to identify with the other character."

Elsewhere, Cracked.com mentioned a similar story that saw the Jaws star recount a particularly acrimonious dinner with Murray. "Bill just got drunk at dinner,” Dreyfuss alleged. “He came back from dinner one night, and I said, ‘Read this script tweak, I think it’s really funny.'”

“He put his face next to me,” Dreyfuss continued. “Nose-to-nose. And he screamed at the top of his lungs, ‘Everyone hates you! You are tolerated!'”

“There was no time to react because he leaned back and took a modern glass-blown ashtray," the Close Encounters actor continued. "He threw it at my face from only a couple of feet away. And it weighed about three-quarters of a pound."

As Cracked pointed out, Murray shrugged off the rumors surrounding his prickly relationship with Dreyfuss years later in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "It worked for the movie. I mean, I drove him nuts, and he encouraged me to drive him nuts.”

Forty years after recording the song that would become her biggest international success, Kim Wilde says she's still driven by the same ambition that launched her career: writing the perfect pop song.

The British singer first broke through in 1981 with "Kids in America," but it was her electrifying 1986 cover of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On" that became her biggest hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 the following year and cementing her place among the defining pop stars of the decade.

Now, as she prepares for an Australian tour this November and works on another studio album, Wilde says she has no interest in simply revisiting her past.

Instead, she's still chasing what she calls the "holy grail" of songwriting.

"We're still chasing the holy grail of the perfect three minute pop tune," Wilde told Noise11. "It still feels like a great idea to us. It still inspires us."

That philosophy shaped her 2025 album Closer and is already guiding its follow-up, which she revealed is scheduled for release next year.

Rather than trying to recreate the sound of "Kids in America" or "You Keep Me Hangin' On," Wilde said every new song begins with one question: will it belong on stage alongside the classics?

"We do a lot of live work, so when we write, we write for what we think will work live with our band," she said. "It's not about looking back. It's not about trying to recreate 'Kids In America' or 'Cambodia.' It's about writing songs that we feel belong on stage next to those songs."

That creative process has remained a family affair throughout her career. Wilde first collaborated with her father British rock-and-roll pioneer Marty Wilde and her brother Ricky Wilde, who wrote much of her early material. Today, Ricky's daughter Scarlet Wilde has joined the songwriting team.

"When I started making records I was working with my dad, who was only about 40 at the time," Wilde said. "Now I'm working with Scarlet, who's 20 years younger than me. We exchange ideas, write songs together and inspire each other."

The collaboration has helped keep Wilde looking forward rather than backward. While fans still expect to hear classics including "Kids in America," "Cambodia," "Chequered Love" and "You Came," she says creating new music remains just as important as celebrating the songs that made her famous.

"We're writing again today," she said. "The next album comes out next year. We're still inspired to write new stuff, but we haven't forgotten how to celebrate the past."

Wilde also believes she's a stronger singer today than she was in the early 1980s, even if revisiting her biggest hits requires a little restraint.

"My voice is a lot stronger now. Sometimes I have to remind myself to soften it because people want to hear those songs the way they remember them."

Retirement, meanwhile, isn't on her mind.

"I can't imagine ever wanting to stop," Wilde said. "The only thing that would stop me would be ill health. I'm doing everything I can to stay as healthy and as strong as I can."

For Wilde, the biggest hits are part of her legacy. The search for the perfect three-minute pop song, however, is still very much a work in progress.

By 1952,John Wayne had established himself as the top Western actor in America. But those weren't the only roles he was winning at. While Wayne's Western persona is well-known, his reputation for playing a hardened but righteous man is even more prevalent. That persona shone through in his iconic performance in The Quiet Man.

Rather than saddling a horse for a showdown in some dust-bowl town, Wayne played Sean Thornton, an Irish-American ex-boxer who, in an effort to escape his dark past, returns to his ancestral homeland in Innisfree, Ireland. Wayne's character hopes to live a peaceful life in the town, but circumstances force him to settle his dilemmas through his fists. The role pushed beyond Wayne's stereotypical portrayal of a macho man, drawing out a more tender, serious, and hilarious side of the revered actor.

A Tumultuous Movie Set

While the movie challenged Wayne's standard persona, the behind-the-scenes drama was brimming with testosterone. The film culminated in a famous nine-minute fight scene between Wayne's character and the brother of his love interest (played by Maureen O'Hara), portrayed by Victor McLaglen. The two take their brawl across the entire town, with comedic relief shots of them stopping for a pint before continuing the fight.

However, director John Ford used unusual methods to bring out the best in his cast. The day before the fight scene was shot, he baited McLaglen by berating him in front of his son, ensuring he was properly enraged when the cameras rolled. He tried to provoke O'Hara similarly, but she didn't back down and often put Ford in his place, according to Express.

While the fight scene was very "real" in the sense that there was genuine anger on set—and both actors performed their own stunts, resulting in heavy bruising—the actual "hospitalization" came from an earlier, smaller moment.

O'Hara's character attempts to slap Wayne for kissing her, but when Wayne blocks her strike, she ends up suffering a hairline fracture in her hand.

“Now let me tell you about that slap,” wrote O’Hara, according toJohn Wayne's official website. “That day on the set, I was mad as hell at Duke and Mr. Ford for something they had done earlier in the day. My plan was to sock Duke in the jaw and really let him have it.”

“Duke came over and said, ‘Let me see that hand. You nearly broke my jaw,’” she continued.

Though she went to the hospital to have it looked at, the film was being shot in chronological order, so O'Hara had to go without a cast so her hand could reset naturally while filming continued.

Despite the drama on set, the film remains one of Wayne's most beloved classics.
