In the mid-70s, The Doobie Brothers were at a crossroads. Their hard rock sound was shifting, their identity was changing, and even their own label wasn’t entirely sure where the band was headed. But out of that uncertainty came one of their most defining songs: “Minute by Minute,” the title track from their 1978 album that would go on to become a yacht rock landmark and the group’s biggest success.

“The McDonald-era Doobies were arguably never more effortlessly smooth than on the title track to 'Minute by Minute,’ from the song's burbling intro to the stacked harmonies on the chorus” Ultimate Classic Rock writes. “What makes it work is the darkness beneath that soft arrangement, and the anger in lyrics like "Livin' on my own, somehow that sounds nice / You think I'm your fool, well, you may just be right.”

Released in April 1979, “Minute by Minute” is a sophisticated pop-soul ballad, infused with jazz and smooth R&B vocals, now considered a quintessential piece of 1970s yacht rock. But its early reception was far from certain.  

“I remember playing it for a friend of mine whose musical judgment I trusted,” McDonald shared in an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock. “And he looked at me and he said, ‘This is a piece of sh–.’” 

Apparently, the executives at Warner Bros. agreed, calling the album “terrible” and declaring The Doobie Brothers “over.”

Instead, Minute by Minute shot to the top of the Billboard 200, with its title track peaking at No. 14, while the McDonald/Kenny Loggins track, “What a Fool Believes,” became their second No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Not to mention the album scored the band both of their Grammys.

Minute by Minute marked the culmination of the McDonald era, following Takin' It to the Streetsand Best of The Doobies, really solidifying the group’s transition from a hard rock beat to a more polished, soulful yacht rock vibe. 

While “What a Fool Believes” is widely regarded as the very best from the King of Yacht Rock, the title track, written by McDonald and Lester Abrams, stands a close second, fueled by its Steely Dan-inspired harmony.

As McDonald explained to Vulture, “Where Pretzel Logic had those major suspensions in the chord progression disguised as minor blues chords, it came out as jazz. It created a whole different harmonic ambience to what was really just a blues song. ‘Minute by Minute’ had the same idea in mind.”

Even McDonald was shocked by the success of the album and song: “It was surprising, really, that Minute by Minute did as well as it did, and as quickly as it did,” he toldUltimate Classic Rock.

In light of Scott Pelley’s recent firing from 60 Minutes, Writers Guild of America East president Tom Fontana wrote a response statement. In it, he argued that the firing shows “profound contempt for the journalism profession.”

“Like many of you, I have been alarmed by recent developments at CBS News. In the past year, CBS has enacted cruel and needless layoffs across the organization and shuttered CBS News Radio,” Fontana wrote. “In addition, based on a string of public reporting and confidential reports from WGAE members, it is clear that CBS brass is engaged in a near-constant level of editorial interference that would have previously been unthinkable.”

Fontana said that with the firing of Pelley, “CBS management is apparently too thin-skinned to handle the honest scrutiny of their own journalists.”

Fontana’s statement continued, saying that he stands with his friends and colleagues at CBS News.

“We see you, and you are not alone,” Fontana wrote. “Thousands of your union brothers, sisters, and siblings have your backs. We stand shoulder to shoulder with you now, we will be there with you when this difficult time in American life passes, and we will help you build what comes next.”

Pelley was fired after he butted heads with Nick Bilton, the show’s new executive producer. He told him that he had “slender” qualifications for the show. Pelley also criticized Bari Weiss, the network’s editor-in-chief, saying that she was “murdering” the show. This culminated in Bilton claiming that Pelley isn’t interested in “a path forward together.”

“Your antipathy to the future of the show has come through loud and clear,” Bilton said in the termination letter to Pelley.

On Tuesday night, Pelley issued a statement responding to his firing. He said that 60 Minutes “lost its DNA” when senior leadership and two on-air correspondents “were cruelly fired without cause.”

“Good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience,” Pelley said. “They stood for fairness against the forces of political bias; they stood for professionalism against chaos.”

Legendary singerBruce Springsteen shocked fans when he posted a series of unrecognizable photos from the early days of his music career.

The "Born to Run" hitmaker, known as "The Boss," was a huge talking point after a social media post left fans questioning everything they knew about the musician. In November 2023, in honor of the 50th anniversary of Springsteen's second album, The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, the official Springsteen account shared an Instagram Carousel of throwback snaps.

"The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle was released 50 years ago today," the caption read. "Pairing Bruce's songwriting with bar band experience, his second LP for Columbia Records captured the spirit and sound of the shore and the city."

The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle initially was a flop when it first released in November 1973, but it found its fame almost two years later and peaked on the Billboard 200 at No. 59.

Fans sounded off in the comments, sharing their shock over the "Thunder Road" singer's appearance. Some commenter compared a young Springsteen to actor Matthew McConaughey.

Over on Reddit, users had unearthed another throwback photo of the singer, taken in 1975, as per Getty Images. Wearing a beanie and a smile, the original poster had coined him "beanie Bruce."

The Caribbean just got closer for travelers from and passing through the greater New York area.

United Airlines has announced a new nonstop route between Newark Liberty International Airport and St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, creating the first-ever direct air connection between the island and the New York metropolitan area. The new weekly service is scheduled to launch on October 31, 2026, offering travelers a quicker and more convenient way to reach one of the Caribbean's most underrated destinations.

"United is proud to connect more customers to more Caribbean destinations than any other airline in the New York City region," Tom Kozlowski, Senior Manager of Latin & Hawaii Network Planning at United Airlines, said in a press release. "We look forward to introducing even more travelers to the vibrant experiences that await in St. Croix."

The route is a significant milestone for St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands—but, often, the least visited by mainland travelers. Until now, passengers flying from Newark to St. Croix typically had to connect through hubs such as San Juan, Miami, Charlotte, or nearby St. Thomas. The new nonstop service eliminates those connections, cutting travel complexity and making island escapes more appealing.

"[This] announcement is a major milestone for St. Croix and a meaningful expansion of air access for both residents and visitors alike," Commissioner Jennifer Matarangas-King of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism said in the press release. "As someone born and raised on St. Croix, I know firsthand how transformative direct connectivity to the New York market can be for our community, our businesses, and our tourism economy."

United's new nonstop service both strengthens the island's ties to an important visitor market and creates opportunities for travelers to experience the "rich culture, history, and natural beauty that make St. Croix so special," Matarangas-King continued.

According to United Airlines and the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, the route will operate on Saturdays using a Boeing 737-700 aircraft configured with 126 seats, including 12 business-class seats. The outbound flight will depart Newark in the morning and arrive in St. Croix shortly after midday, with a return flight departing the island in the afternoon and arriving back in New Jersey that evening.

St. Croix offers a very different experience from many of the Caribbean's larger tourism hubs. Visitors will find historic Danish colonial architecture, white-sand beaches, coral reefs, rum distilleries, and one of the longest barrier reefs in the Caribbean. The island is also home to the charming towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted, where colorful buildings and waterfront promenades provide a distinctly laid-back atmosphere.

Outdoor enthusiasts are also drawn to attractions such as the Buck Island Reef National Monument, widely regarded as a premier snorkeling and diving destination and famously called "the finest marine garden in the Caribbean Sea" by President John F. Kennedy. Visitors can also trek through rainforest trails, kayak in bioluminescent bays, and sunbathe on beaches that are far less crowded than many of the neighboring islands' beaches.

Because the U.S. Virgin Islands are a U.S. territory, American travelers can even visit without a passport, making St. Croix an especially attractive option for spontaneous getaways.

For East Coast travelers dreaming of cerulean seas and sunshine that only the Caribbean can offer, getting to St. Croix is about to become considerably more achievable—and for the first time, it will require hopping on just a single flight.

Buffalo Wild Wings is facing backlash online after offering a fan who stormed the court during an NBA Finals game free food for the rest of the season.

The fan, whose name hasn't been released, dashed onto the court at the Frost Bank Center during the fourth quarter of Wednesday night's game. With his phone in hand, he attempted to take a selfie with San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama.

"I've never been in that situation," Wembanyama said after the game, which was won by the New York Knicks (105-95), per ESPN. "I didn't know how to act."

The fan, a juvenile, is now facing two criminal charges after disrupting the game, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office confirmed, per People magazine. The fan has also been issued a lifetime ban from every NBA arena, according to The Athletic.

On June 4, Buffalo Wild Wings addressed the incident in a post on X, writing, "Internet, help us find the banned fan. He can watch the rest of the finals at B-Dubs on us."

The offer sparked immediate backlash online, with many users criticizing the company for appearing to reward the behavior.

"This the TikTok era rewarding dumb bs for likes and views. Stupid s*** like this post is why these idiots do this stuff," one person wrote.

"Uh no. This idea is worse than your food," someone else said.

"So you wanna make this a trend!? Commit a crime we will reward you here in Buffalo Wild Wings!! Trash," a third comment read.

As of this writing, the company has not responded further to criticism over the post, which continues to circulate widely across social media, with users still weighing in on whether Buffalo Wild Wings crossed a line or was simply engaging with a viral sports moment.

If you've ever wished a road race would end with a plate of dessert instead of a medal, Italy finally has an event with your name on it.

Known as the Tiramisù Run, this new race combines two of Italy's greatest passions: running and food. Held in the historic city of Treviso, widely considered the birthplace of tiramisù, the event invites participants to run through centuries-old streets, scenic waterways, and surrounding countryside before celebrating with one of the country's best-known desserts.

Dubbed "the world's first Tiramisù Run," the race will take place on October 11, 2026, bringing participants through a 6.3-mile course around "Little Venice." The race coincides with the TiramisùWorld Cup, an international dessert competition that will take place during the same weekend in Treviso's main square.

For travelers, the appeal extends far beyond the finish line.

The event reflects a broader trend in experiential and active tourism, where travelers increasingly seek activities that blend fitness with culture and local cuisine. Studies show that travelers want to get active and actively participate in local culture, not just observe it. According to an American Express 2026 travel trend report, 79 percent of Millennials and Gen Z seek out local workshops and activities specific to the destinations they visit. Another 89 percent say it's important to leave room in their itineraries to enjoy local foods.

So why not do both at once with a food race? Around the world, races centered around regional foods have grown in popularity, but few are tied to a dessert as internationally recognized as tiramisù.

While competitive runners are certainly expected to participate, the atmosphere will be intentionally welcoming. Many entrants will treat the race as a fun travel experience rather than a serious athletic challenge. After all, the focus is as much on enjoying the city and its culinary traditions as it is on achieving a personal best. And, for many runners, that reward may be just as motivating as the race itself.

1. Hashbrowns

Chef Michael Goodman always keeps Trader Joe's frozen hash browns stocked at home.

"They're simple and reliable, but also versatile," Goodman says. "For me, breakfast is all about creating dishes that feel comforting but still thoughtful, and hash browns are a great example of that balance."

To upgrade them, Goodman cooks the hash browns extra crispy in a cast-iron pan with olive oil, then tops them with soft scrambled eggs, avocado, fresh herbs and either crème fraîche or hot sauce.

When he wants something heartier, he'll add roasted mushrooms or smoked salmon.

2. Unexpected Cheddar Cheese

Another Trader Joe's staple Goodman keeps on hand is Unexpected Cheddar, a fan-favorite cheese known for combining the sharpness of aged cheddar with the crumbly texture of Parmesan.

"It melts beautifully into omelets or breakfast sandwiches, and adds a richer, more complex flavor than standard cheddar," Goodman says.

One of his favorite tricks is grating it into scrambled eggs right before they finish cooking. According to Goodman, this helps the cheese stay creamy instead of becoming greasy.

3. Trader Giotto's Fettuccine Alfredo

Chef Nicole Andrea Guzman says Trader Giotto's Fettuccine Alfredo is one Trader Joe's product she keeps coming back to because of how easy it is to customize.

"It's great on its own, but even better when you get creative," Guzman says. "The pasta's al dente, the sauce is really delicious and is just a versatile item that shows how even a frozen item can be a canvas for kitchen sorcery."

To make it even better, she recommends adding proteins like chicken, sausage, bacon or shrimp, along with vegetables such as mushrooms or spinach.

A sprinkle of Cajun seasoning is another easy way to give the dish a completely different flavor profile.

4. Sweet Potato Fries

When Guzman is looking for a side dish with a little more personality, she reaches for Trader Joe's Sweet Potato Fries.

"I don't know what sorcery they're doing in the TJ's test kitchen, but there's just something about the seasoning on these that sets them apart from other frozen sweet potato fries I've had," Guzman says. "They have a sweet and salty crackling type coating on them when they're fried, and I can't say enough about them."

While they're a natural pairing for burgers and sandwiches, Guzman also likes turning them into chili cheese fries for a heartier meal.

5. Spanish-Inspired Charcutería

For an easy appetizer, grazing board or quick lunch, Guzman recommends Trader Joe's Spanish-Inspired Charcutería.

"I feel like this item is self-explanatory for when you just want to make a yummy grazing board," Guzman says. Plus, she notes that it can do much more than anchor a charcuterie spread.

One of her favorite ways to use it is in sandwiches and grilled cheese. She likes pairing the meats with Trader Joe's ciabatta bread and roasted red peppers for an easy and tasty meal. "With the flick of a cheese knife, you can conjure up an amazing spread with little effort and big flavor," Guzman says.

The charcutería also works well on flatbreads and in wraps, making it a versatile option to keep on hand for everything from entertaining to quick weeknight meals.

6. Organic Polenta

Chef Maya Walton Patel loves keeping Trader Joe's Organic Polenta in her pantry because it's versatile and can quickly round out a meal.

"It's shelf-stable and great to have in my pantry when I'm in a rush to add to an Italian dinner," Patel says.

One of her favorite preparations is slicing the polenta and arranging it in a baking dish with olive oil, Parmesan cheese, and fresh or dried herbs before baking until warmed through and lightly crisped. She'll often serve it with marinara sauce, vegetable caponata, ratatouille or simple roasted vegetables.

"It always gets really great reviews," Patel says.

7. Seasonings

If there's one section of Trader Joe's Patel never skips, it's the seasoning aisle. In particular, she's a fan of the store's spice blends, which she says can instantly add flavor to everyday meals.

Her top pick is the Mushroom & Company Multipurpose Umami Seasoning Blend. "It's made with ground dried mushrooms and a little dried red peppers for a little heat. It works on everything," Patel says. "I add it to soups, vegetables, grains and salads."

She's also a longtime fan of the Everything But the Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend. "I grabbed it to add some interest to some avocado toast for the crew with a little lime once, and now it's the only way I make it," Patel says.

8. Shredded Kale

Shredded kale might not be the most exciting item at Trader Joe's, but for Chef Raul Duarte, it's one of the store's most versatile ingredients.

"My favorite product for now is the shredded kale," Duarte says.

One of his favorite uses is adding it to scrambled eggs. He starts by sautéing garlic, onion and the kale in a little oil before adding a squeeze of lemon juice. Then, he folds in eggs along with Trader Joe's Reduced Guilt Spinach & Kale Greek Yogurt Dip, which adds extra creaminess and savory flavor.

The result is a simple breakfast that's packed with flavor and comes together with just a handful of ingredients.

9. Rolled Corn Tortilla Chips Chili & Lime

"As a Mexican-American, these chips instantly throw me back to childhood because of their high-acid profile," Duarte says.

"I enjoy them by themselves; however, I love a high-acid moment, to which at times I add some lime juice and eat them like that."

10. Wild Raw Argentinian Red Shrimp

Chef Phillip Dewayne says Trader Joe's Frozen Argentinian Red Shrimp is one product he regularly keeps on hand thanks to its quality and versatility.

"The quality is consistently impressive, and it cooks quickly," Dewayne says. "It's a great option for when I'm cooking a meal at home."

For an easy weeknight dinner, he likes preparing the shrimp with garlic butter and fresh herbs, or tossing it into a light pasta with lemon, white wine and seasonal vegetables. Dewayne says the shrimp "has a sweetness that works beautifully in dishes where you want the seafood to be the star."

When he's looking to elevate it even further, he'll serve the shrimp over creamy stone-ground grits with roasted corn and smoked tomato butter, or pair grilled shrimp with a fresh peach and tomato salad during the summer.

11. Crunchy Chili Onion

When Dewayne wants to add flavor without a lot of extra work, he reaches for Trader Joe's Chili Onion Crunch.

"My favorite product from Trader Joe's is definitely their Chili Onion Crunch," Dewayne says. "I keep it stocked at home all the time. It's one of those products that can completely wake a dish up without you having to overthink it."

Dewayne loves the combination of crispy onion, garlic and chili, which adds heat, texture and savoriness in a single spoonful. He uses it on eggs, roasted potatoes, grilled salmon, noodles, rice bowls, vegetables and sandwiches.

One of his favorite upgrades is finishing roasted vegetables or crispy potatoes with Chili Onion Crunch, fresh herbs and a squeeze of lemon. He'll also stir it into aioli or vinaigrettes to add "a little edge and complexity" without having to make a sauce from scratch.

12. Green Chickpeas With Parsley and Cumin

Duarte discovered Trader Joe's Greek Chickpeas With Parsley and Cumin while browsing the aisles and was immediately intrigued by the flavors.

"When I opened the can, I got a subtle fragrance of parsley and cumin," Duarte says.

While his chef instincts initially pointed him toward a salad, he decided to take a different approach and blend the chickpeas into a quick hummus. To finish it, he tops the dip with fresh parsley, Trader Joe's Main Squeeze Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Trader Joe's Crunchy Chili Onion.

For dipping, Duarte recommends Trader Joe's Pita Chips. To make them even better, he suggests warming them in a 300-degree oven for five to seven minutes, then finishing them with flaky salt and toasted sesame seeds.

After talking with these chefs, a few themes came up again and again.

Don't treat Trader Joe's products as the finished dish.

"My biggest tip with Trader Joe's products in general is not to rely on them to do all the work for you. Use them as tools," Dewayne says.

Goodman shares a similar philosophy. "My biggest tip with Trader Joe's products is to use them as a starting point rather than the final dish. A few fresh herbs, citrus, good olive oil or seasonal ingredients can completely transform something convenient into something that feels restaurant quality."

Think in combinations.

Duarte recommends building meals around complementary ingredients rather than focusing on a single product.

"I recommend that any time an item is purchased at Trader Joe's, think of it as a triangle and find two extra items that will go with it; there is always an answer for that," Duarte says.

Browse before you shop.

Trader Joe's is known for its rotating selection of seasonal and limited-time products, which is why Guzman recommends slowing down and taking a look around before filling your cart.

"I always browse the store first before I start filling up that shopping cart," Guzman says. "TJ's is known for having fun seasonal items that can really change the trajectory of your shopping extravaganza in the best way."

Mick Jagger’s Recording Session Was Interrupted by Cops

The lyrics of "Let’s Spend the Night Together" by The Rolling Stones are all about begging a partner to stay with them. It's simple, but the story behind the recording is much more complicated.

Jagger recorded the song in the studio at night in 1966 with studio engineer Glyn Johns, according to American Songwriter. Johns wrote in Sound Man: A Life Recording Hits with The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Eric Clapton, the Faces that cops interrupted the session.

The lead singer smoked a joint before two policemen showed up at the studio as part of their rounds. "They could not see Mick, had no idea who they were intruding on, and could only hear him singing," the engineer wrote. "Mick, in turn, could not see them and was oblivious to their presence."

The lead singer's driver exited through the back with a bag of illegal substances. The policemen realized they had interrupted Jagger's session and apologized. Producer Andrew Oldham asked to use their nightsticks, gave them to Jagger, who then used them against each other as percussion. That sound was added to the track.

Jagger was open about his past of having to avoid the cops. "At the time it wasn’t very funny," he told The Talks. "It wasn’t very good because it completely took over our lives creatively, and we couldn’t do this and couldn’t do that. You had to spend all your time trying to deal with all the police, and you didn’t have time to do anything else."

It took a lot creatively, but in this case it gave back to the music. The song was released in 1967 as a single with "Ruby Tuesday."

Garth Brooks was honored with a historic new award from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) this week.

The country music icon was named the No. 1-selling album artist in history and received the first-ever Artist of a Lifetime Award.

In a statement posted to his website, Brooks shared his appreciation for the honor.

"They say that gratefulness is the seed of happiness, and I am grateful every single day to have been given this shot," he said. "A lot of people get the shot. But Bob Doyle told me early on that getting the shot wasn't going to be the hard part. The hard part was going to be hanging on to it. I can’t thank God and the people enough for my life and the career I have been so lucky to have."

Brooks performed at the RIAA event with a medley of songs that have inspired him over the years coupled with some of his own hits. The songs included "Carolina in My Mind" by James Taylor, "Turn the Page" by Bob Seger, and "Amarillo By Morning" by George Strait. Brooks mixed in a couple of his biggest hits—"The Thunder Rolls" and "Friends in Low Places."

The performance and honor add to Brooks’ decades-long career as one of the most influential figures in country music. Over the years, he has consistently broken records while helping bring the genre to a wider global audience. The RIAA noted that his impact on the music industry spans generations, with his catalog continuing to reach new listeners more than 30 years after his debut.

New flavors at Tropical Smoothie Cafe

In May, the chain announced a new limited-time menu item inspired by Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch film.

The 'Ohana Breeze Smoothie blends pineapple, mango, banana, orange juice, and a sprinkle of blue spirulina for a fun-colored drink that promises “naturally sweetened tropical flavor, bursting with island magic.”

According to a press release, it took nearly 20 flavor combinations to get the flavor combination just right.

The smoothie will be available in two sizes, 12 and 24 ounces, at participating Tropical Smoothie Cafe locations until Tuesday, June 9 or as long as supplies last.

Not many may know that one of CarlosSantana's biggest hits of his career was originally a Fleetwood Mac song. In 1968, Peter Green developed a track that was released early in the band's career, but didn't gain fame until it became a Latin rock hit.

"Black Magic Woman" was the epitome of sultry blues rock that first appeared as a single for the band, but didn't actually gain much traction. Green reportedly wrote the track after being inspired by a former girlfriend, Sandra Eldson, whom he nicknamed "Magic Mamma." The band founder later admitted that the track was also inspired by Otis Rush's "All Your Love," which was released in 1958.

The Rush song was actually recorded by Green's former band, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Influenced by what Mayall once said, Green said in his book Peter Green: The Biography, "One of things [Mayall] said was that if you really like something, you should take the first lines and make up another song from them. So that's what I did with 'Black Magic Woman'."

Upon the track's release, it did moderately well in the U.K. and didn't manage to chart in the U.S. Two years later, "Black Magic Woman" was re-recorded by Latin guitarist Santana for his album Abraxas, with Gregg Rolie on vocals. The track was mixed with Green's original version and Gábor Szabó's 1966 instrumental "Gypsy Queen."

The result was a blue rock track with a sultry Latin rhythm that Santana has been known for, thanks to his guitar. His arrangement also included conga, timbales, organ, and piano to create a "voodoo" feel.

Santana's version of "Black Magic Woman" became a staple and one of his biggest hits, spending 13 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also peaked at No.4 in January of 1971. It's said that his album, Abraxas, also became a No. 1 album thanks to the song's popularity on the chart.

In 1998, both Fleetwood Mac and Santana were among the inductees at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. Santana asked Mick Fleetwood to get Green on board with performing "Black Magic Woman" with him on stage. Green agreed, but refused to recreate one of his guitar solos.

Rosalía has had to postpone the start of the U.S. shows on her Lux tour in Florida "due to a family emergency," the Miami venue Kaseya Center announced on Thursday, June 4.

The Spanish singer was set to perform in Miami on June 4, along with another show set for June 6. Then she was set to head to Orlando on June 8.

“She is sorry to disappoint her fans, but the circumstances have left her with no other choice,” the Kaseya Center said in a statement on Instagram. "As the tour explores rescheduling, please hold onto your ticket. We will provide more information soon."

The same statement was shared by the Kia Center in Orlando.

This came just three days after the singer posted a series of photos on Instagram with the caption, "MIAMI IM BACKKKK🩰😎🌞🌊."

This is the second time Rosalía has had to cancel dates on her tour, with the last happening in March after she suffered from food poisoning. However, that time wasn't a cancellation as much as Rosalía being forced to end the show early.

"I tried to do this show — since the beginning I’ve been sick. I’ve had big time food poisoning, and I’ve tried to push it till the end but I’m feeling extremely sick," she said according to videos shared by fans. “I’m on the floor doing my best. I can try to keep going, but at some point I might have to stop … We might have to if I physically can’t continue. I’m in pain."

Rosalía's next tour stop is set for Boston on June 11.

The singer's full tour is at 42 arena stops across 17 countries in Europe, the U.K., North America, and Latin America. In North America specifically, she has 11 dates in cities such as Boston, Toronto, New York, Chicago, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego and Oakland.

The 1985 pop rock hit "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves didn't start out the song the world fell in love with. In the late 1970s, American singer Katrina Leskanich was working as a dishwasher on a U.S. military base in England by day and performing as a covers singer at night. Eventually, she joined forces with musicians Kimberley Rew (guitar), Alex Cooper (drums), and Vince de la Cruz (bass) to form Katrina and the Waves.

In early 1983, on their own dime, the band recorded an album of their original songs to sell at gigs. Ultimately the album got picked up by Attic Records in Canada, so their first album Walking on Sunshine was only released there and didn't get widespread play.

Rew wrote all the songs on that album, including "Walking on Sunshine," a song the band wasn't excited by at first. "I thought it wasn’t really us. Vince de la Cruz, our bass-player, thought it was irritating," Leskanich told The Guardian. "It proved to be a total dance floor emptier. So we dropped it."

Then a series of rapid-fire events pushed the band into the spotlight. First, a Radio 1 DJ, who heard the album at a party in Cambridge, played a track from it. Next, super-cool, fellow '80s band The Bangles covered another of the band's songs "Going Down to Liverpool" and had a hit. That's when Capitol Records signed them.

For the first Capitol album, the band substantially changed up "Walking on Sunshine." Leskanich says they were recording the song when an arranger popped by and said: 'You should put horns on that.' And so they did. The new and improved 1985 version of the song featured several upbeat saxophones and trumpets, live drums, and a tighter, more radio-friendly production.

The band's self-titled breakthrough album, Katrina and the Waves, was officially released on March 22, 1985. "Walking on Sunshine" was released on April 26, and by June 22, the single peaked at No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and remained on the chart for 21 weeks. The band was nominated for "Best New Artist" at the 28th Annual Grammy Awards (1986), but they did not win.

Looking back on writing the song, Rew told The Guardian, "I’d love to say 'Walking on Sunshine' relates to a significant event in my life, like walking out of my front door, seeing a comet and being inspired," he said. "But it’s just a piece of simple fun, an optimistic song despite us not being outstandingly cheery people. We were a typical young band, insecure and pessimistic."

"Walking on Sunshine" has become an enduring musical phenomenon, consistently ranking on happiest song lists, including No. 5 on Ranker's best happy songs and No. 10 on Far Out magazine's science-backed list of the happiest songs ever recorded.

The song can still be heard across decades of commercials, at wedding receptions, and on '80s radio stations. In 1996, Dolly Parton released a cover of the song, and it's also been featured in a number of films, including American Psycho (2000) and Daddy Day Care (2003). To date, the pop-rock classic is approaching 1 billion streams on Spotify. 

If at first you don't succeed, try again. Katrina and the Waves did. The world's happiest song came from a band of self-described pessimists on their second try. Sometimes that's how it works.

Marjane Satrapi, a French-Iranian artist, activist, bestselling author of Persepolis, and Oscar-nominated director of its acclaimed film adaptation, has died. She was 56 years old.

According to The New York Times, the office of President Emmanuel Macron of France announced Satrapi’s death in a statement today, though no details regarding the cause or timing were provided.

“Her passing marks the loss of a leading figure in French culture and a freedom-loving artist whose work carried a universal message and earned her immense international acclaim,” the statement said.

Born in northern Iran in 1969, Satrapi lived through the Iran-Iraq War and the increasing restrictions placed on women and girls following the Islamic Revolution. She drew heavily from those experiences to write Persepolis, her celebrated graphic memoir series told through the eyes of a young girl named Marji. Among its most memorable scenes is one inspired by Satrapi’s own childhood, in which she and her classmates remove their veils and use them to skip rope. 

Fearing their outspoken daughter would run afoul of the regime, Satrapi’s parents sent her to Austria in 1984. A decade later, she settled in France, where she was free to publish her work. The first English translation was published in 2003, with the second volume following a year later.

The books became some of the “widest-read works to explore the interior lives of modern Iranians,” the Times reported, with a reach that expanded even further in 2007 with the animated film adaptation. Co-directed by Satrapi, the film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. 

A lifelong advocate for human rights, Satrapi remained an outspoken critic of the Iranian government. Following the 2022 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, she spearheaded the graphic nonfiction collection, Woman, Life, Freedom, which featured artwork by Satrapi as well as other artists, journalists, and activists. 

“Even basic human rights, they deny us,” she said of the Iranian government after the book was released. “You don’t have the right to dance, you don’t have the right to sing, you don’t have the right to do this, you don’t have the right to do that.”

According to CNN, the Narges Foundation, an Iranian women human rights group, described Satrapi as “a fearless advocate for feminism, women’s rights,” and as someone who “champion(ed) the struggles and resilience of Iranian women.”
