1965 Classic Began Historic Chart Run 61 Years Ago Today

Fri, 06/05/2026 - 3:21am

In 1965, a movie soundtrack accomplished something few albums in music history have ever matched.

On June 5, 1965, Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music soundtrack began what would become a remarkable 70-week run atop the U.K. album chart. The album's success wasn't limited to Britain. In the United States, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spent an astonishing 109 weeks in the Top 10, setting a record for soundtrack albums.

More than six decades later, the album remains one of the most successful releases ever to appear on the Billboard charts. In fact, it still sits at No. 2 on Billboard's Greatest of All Time 200 Albums chart.

Led by performances from Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, the soundtrack featured beloved songs including "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Edelweiss" and the film's title track.

The album spent 238 total weeks on the Billboard 200, remaining on the chart for more than four and a half years. It also became a global phenomenon, eventually selling more than 20 million copies worldwide.

Its extraordinary chart performance has continued to earn recognition decades later. In 2015, Billboard ranked The Sound of Music soundtrack as the No. 2 greatest-performing album in Billboard 200 history, trailing only Adele's21.

The soundtrack's success was fueled by songs that have remained woven into popular culture for generations. "The Sound of Music," "Edelweiss," "My Favorite Things" and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" have been covered by countless artists over the decades, while the film itself continues to attract new audiences through television broadcasts, streaming platforms and anniversary re-releases. In 2018, the soundtrack was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural, historical and aesthetic significance.

The Film Was Just as Successful

Directed by Robert Wise—who was the Oscar-nominated editor of Citizen Kane, widely regarded as the greatest film ever madeThe Sound of Music premiered in March 1965 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The film starred Andrews as Maria, a young woman who becomes governess to the seven children of Captain von Trapp (Plummer) before helping the family flee Austria during the rise of Nazi Germany.

The movie became the highest-grossing film in history by 1966 and ultimately won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Today, both the film and its soundtrack remain enduring favorites, proving that audiences still haven't stopped singing along to "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favorite Things" more than 60 years after their release.

Quote of the Day: Activist Mercy Otis Warren on How the ‘Balm of Life’ Is a ‘Kind and Faithful Friend’

Fri, 06/05/2026 - 2:45am

The American Revolution is chock-full of famous names: Benjamin Franklin, Paul Revere, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, etc. But there are some figures who are not as well known—even though their influence was significant. Mercy Otis Warren, for example, was a published poet, political playwright and pamphleteer during the American Revolution. She was influential in the retelling of the history of the war, and kept correspondence with prominent figures of the time, such as Samuel Adams, John Hancock, George Washington and Jefferson. But she didn’t just write about politics, and our quote of the day is her insight into what can cure low spirits: a good friend.

As the National Women’s History Museum reported, Warren was born on Sept. 14, 1728, in Barnstable, MA. She was the third child of 13, and gained a love of politics from her father—who was an attorney elected to the Massachusetts legislature—and a love of history from sitting in on her brother’s school lessons (since girls weren’t allowed to receive a formal education at the time). She educated herself with books she had at her disposal, and ended up marrying James Warren in 1754, who was also politically active, which meshed well with her own ideology.

She was a Patriot, and criticized British taxes and policies, even writing satires making fun of British officials. Warren supported the Boston Tea Party and any boycotts that came along, urging other women to do the same. And if it weren’t for the women leading the charge on boycotting British goods, the American Revolution wouldn’t have been as successful as it was, per History.com.

She kept a written history of the Revolutionary War for 30 years, which turned into her 1805 book History of the Rise, Progress and Termination of the American Revolution. It was the first nonfiction book published by a woman in the United States and is one of the earliest first-hand recollections of the war, according to the National Women’s History Museum. Jefferson even ordered copies to be made for himself and his cabinet members (he was president at the time), writing to Warren that he anticipated her account “will furnish a more instructive lesson to mankind than any equal period known in history,” per Sudie Doggett Wike’s book Women in the American Revolution

With such an interesting and inspiring background, it makes sense that Mercy Otis Warren was well-rounded enough to not only write about political causes, but also plays and other poems. And today’s quote features her insight into what the simple, yet effective, “balm” of life is: friendship. This was true in the 18th century and is still true today.

“The balm of life, a kind and faithful friend.”

This quote comes from the book, The plays and poems of Mercy Otis Warren: facsimile reproductions, which was printed in 1980. Most of the chapters are various plays she wrote—The defeat, The adulateur, The blockheads, The group and The motley assembly—which ranged in date from 1773 to 1779. There is also a chapter called “Poems, dramatic and miscellaneous,” from 1790, per the New York Public Library.

Related: Quote of the Day by Karen Horney, Psychoanalyst: ‘If You Want To Be Proud of Yourself, Then Do Things in Which You Can Take Pride'

Deeper Meaning of Mercy Otis Warren’s Quote—‘The Balm of Life’

Warren is saying that the “balm” or healing factor in life is to be surrounded by “kind and faithful” friendships. Even when your existence can get bogged down by trivial drama, tough financial times or just mundane periods when you feel like nothing is going your way, a great friend can make all of the difference in your mood. That companion can be your childhood bestie, someone who lives on your street, your sibling or your partner; whoever it is that can make your down days even a little brighter.

Sometimes, we can lose sight of what’s important. And friends can accidentally fall to the wayside—yet they can be the simplest solution to a foul mood or feeling isolated. So the next time you feel a little lost, call up a loved one—someone you know is good for a laugh or one who will intently listen to you, whatever you need—and you might be surprised at how well that works at turning your day around.

  • “It may be a mistake, that man, in a state of nature, is more disposed to cruelty than courtesy.”
  • “Democratic principles are the result of equality of condition.”
  • “The study of the human character opens at once a beautiful and a deformed picture of the soul.”
  • “Great advantages are often attended with great inconveniences, and great minds called to severe trials.”
  • “The waves have rolled upon me, the billows are repeatedly broken over me, yet I am not sunk down.”

Walmart’s $13 Square Neck Tank Top Is ‘Buttery Soft,’ ‘Flattering,’ and Available in 7 Colors

Fri, 06/05/2026 - 2:30am

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

There’s perhaps no item more essential to a summer capsule wardrobe than a great tank top. It’s the kind of piece that quietly does all the heavy lifting, serving as the foundation for countless warm weather outfits. Whether layered under a lightweight cardigan on a breezy evening, paired with denim shorts on a hot afternoon, or worn beneath a blazer for an office-ready look, the right tank top can do it all. While it may seem like a simple basic, details like fabric, fit, and neckline make a huge difference in how often you'll reach for it.

One standout option is the Moyiko Ribbed Square Neck Tank Top. Right now, it’s on sale for 53% off at Walmart, bringing the price down from $27 to just $13. At that price, it's easy to stock up on a few different colors and build a versatile collection of everyday essentials without overspending.

The tank comes in seven easy-to-style shades, including black, white, gray, and pink, along with a few versions featuring contrast stitching for a slightly more fashion-forward look. Sizes range from extra small through 2XL, making it accessible for a wide variety of body types and personal style preferences.

What helps set this tank apart is its flattering square neckline. While traditional crewneck and scoop neck tanks tend to lean casual, a square neck instantly feels more elevated and refined. Combined with the slim-fitting ribbed design, it delivers a sleek look that feels effortlessly put together.

Comfort is another major selling point. The fabric blend consists of 92% rayon and 8% elastane, creating a material that's soft, breathable, lightweight, and stretchy. It hugs the body comfortably without feeling restrictive, making it a practical choice for everything from running errands to relaxing at home.

For casual everyday wear, this tank couldn't be easier to style. Pair it with jeans and sandals for a simple daytime outfit, or throw it on with athletic shorts and sneakers when heading out for a walk. It also works perfectly with leggings or sweatpants when you're spending the day lounging around the house but still want to feel put together.

For a vacation-ready look, tuck it into breezy linen trousers or a flowing midi skirt. If you're heading to work or meeting friends for lunch, layer it beneath a button-down shirt or structured blazer with tailored pants. The square neckline adds just enough sophistication to make it feel appropriate in more polished settings.

On evenings out, the tank transitions seamlessly into dressier territory. Pair it with a mini skirt, statement jewelry, and boots or strappy sandals for an outfit that feels stylish without trying too hard. Because the design is simple and streamlined, it’s the perfect foundation for accessorizing.

Shoppers seemed to love it, too. One reviewer described the tank top as “cute and buttery soft,” writing, “The material is light, very soft, and not see-through. It’s an overall great choice for summer to go with shorts, jeans, or capris.”

Another shopper said they were “genuinely obsessed” with the tank top, calling it “one of those staple pieces that instantly makes an outfit look more put together.” They added, “The square neckline is so flattering and gives it a chic, elevated look compared to basic tanks. The ribbed fabric feels high-quality, soft, and has the perfect amount of stretch while still holding everything in place.”

There are 12 total hues available for purchase — ranging from a bright red to patterned stripes — with sale prices ranging from $11 to $13. The available sizes run between S and 2XL, which shoppers say runs true to size. Just note that the style already has a loose fit, so if you like oversized tees, then you may want to consider purchasing your usual size.

The shirt is made of 60% polyester, 35% rayon, and 5% spandex, so it's recommended that you hand wash the piece or place it in the washing machine in a laundry bag in cold water for best results. Lay the shirt out flat to dry and make sure to avoid bleach. The shirt does come in vacuum packaging upon arrival, which might cause wrinkles, so you can iron or wash it to get them out.

The top features short sleeves with a ruched design at the bottom, which offers a "very flattering" look because it highlights the silhouette, and offers a slightly dressier option than just a plain tee. The Highest-Rated 'Brooklyn 99' Episode Was Actually Filmed As a Budget-Saver

Fri, 06/05/2026 - 12:05am

Fox's beloved show Brooklyn 99 was a police, procedural sitcom that ran from 2013 to 2018. The show was met with critical acclaim during its five years on air winningGolden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and Emmy Awards. The Washington Post called it "one of the funniest, most important shows on TV" and long after its series finale it has remained a staple in many households.

In Season Five, the 14th episode of the show is called "The Box" and features guest actors Sterling K. Brown and Romy Rosemont. The show is what's known as a "bottle episode" meaning it is filmed with an extremely limited set and cast in order to cut costs. Bottle episodes are a strategy by production in TV to save time, labor, and money by pulling the story out of a "bottle." This allows them to then subsequently allocate the saved budget towards bigger things and production values.

"The Box" takes places over one night in the Brooklyn precinct with Jake (Andy Samburg) and Holt (Andre Braugher) interrogating a dentist (Sterling K. Brown) who is the main suspect behind the murder of his business partner. The interrogation takes several unexpected turns when the dentist is able to predict their interrogation strategies to deflect all accusations and even trick the pair into making blundering mistakes.

The episode of Brooklyn 99 was met with high viewership, massive ratings places like The A.V. Club, and widespread, critical acclaim with many considering it to be the best of the entire series. Vulture wrote of the episode:

'The Box' gets far with a simple, but effective, structural approach to its interrogation. A lot of the first act has Jake and Raymond sequestered together as they formulate theories and bounce off of each other before they let Davidson into the equation. Holt is also eager to get his hands dirty again as he misses this aspect from his detective days, and Peralta knows an interrogation works better with two people so they can get some sort of Rush Hour/good cop, bad cop dynamic going on."

For his performance in the episode as the dentist Phillip Davidson, Brown was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

Forgotten '90s Reality Star Is Suddenly Climbing the Country Charts

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 11:49pm

More than three decades after becoming a breakout personality on MTV's groundbreaking reality series, The Real World: Los Angeles, Jon Brennan is making headlines again—but this time it's for his music.

After years spent driving for Uber in Nashville to make ends meet, the former reality TV star has found unexpected success on the country charts, proving it's never too late for a second act.

"I did give up [on my dream] about 20 years ago, and I regretted that decision," Brennan told Peoplein an interview published Thursday, June 4. "So now I UNgave up. I've been back at it full-time for five years in Nashville, and everything has changed, so I'm relearning the ever-changing music business. There is something in my soul that is very attached to music. I missed it. I missed making it, and there was a void in my life."

Brennan's latest single, "Tell Me That There Ain't a God," has been climbing the Country music charts since its release, reaching No. 10 on the American Country Network chart in March. The song recently broke into the Top 50 on the MusicRow chart.

"I wasn't sure I had the confidence to survive the possible rejections again, but my desire to create and perform music overshadowed those doubts, so here I am again," he told People. "Also, my father passed away seven years ago, and he loved country music and is the reason I learned to love it. So I won't quit, not ever again."

Iconic TV Theme Song, Ranked Among the Best Ever, Was Written During a 5-Minute Shower

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 11:11pm

It all started with a *Big Bang*.

Big Bang Theory is one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. Running for 12 seasons and spawning numerous spinoff series, the Chuck Lorre and Bill Brady show is beloved by millions.

But what about the theme song?

Written and recorded by Canadian alternative rock band Barenaked Ladies, the "Big Bang Theory Theme" is one of the most "financially successful theme songs ever," according to Adam Reader of Professor of Rock.

With continuous syndication and streaming, the song has brought in more money for the Barenaked Ladies than the rest of the band's catalog combined.

After Lorre and Brady attended one of the band's show, while Big Bang was still in development, the creators reached out to the band in the hopes they would be willing to pen the theme.

"I got in the shower and the whole idea came to me in the course of a five-minute shower," frontman Ed Robertson told Metro in 2019. "I actually called my wife in and said 'Can you write this down?!?' and dictated the first verse to her."

He added, "I got out of the shower, recorded it in my bathing suit, recorded it into my laptop using no outdoor gear, just a built-in mic in my laptop, and emailed it."

The show creators were instantly sold. After one simple change to the end of the song, the rest is history.

In 2022, Rolling Stone ranked the song among the 100 Greatest TV Theme Songs of All Time.

1968 Jimi Hendrix Hit Hailed By Critics As 'Greatest Piece of Electric Guitar Work Ever Recorded' Became Only No.1 UK Single

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 11:07pm

Developed from his 1968 recording of "Voodoo Chile," Jimi Hendrix came up with the song "Voodoo Child" during a jam/studio session with with Steve Winwood on the organ and Jack Casady on bass. The following day, Hendrix returned and recorded eight versions with the members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the final of which ended up being the master track. This version appeared on their third studio album, Electric Ladyland.

The lyrics from "Voodoo Chile" and "Voodoo Child" are entirely different other than the chorus. On New Years Day in 1970, Hendrix introduced the song declaring it the "national anthem" for the Black Panthers. This came at a time when the musician was being pressured to make a statement on the rising racial issues at the time.

Following Hendrix's passing in 1970, Track Records released the song as a single exclusively in the United Kingdom. It reached the number one spot on the singles chart on November 15, 1970. This made it the only number UK single in the entirety of Hendrix's career and be certified Gold in the country as well.

"Voodoo Child" was met with and has continued to be held to critical acclaim upon its release. AllMusicreviews said of the song:

"Opening with a simple riff on the wah-wah pedal, the song explodes into full sonic force, the guitarist hitting the crunching chords and taking the astral-inspired leads for which he became infamous. The real guitar explorations happen midway through the song, while the basic, thundering riff is unrelenting."

Known as one of the greatest guitar players of all time, Hendrix's playing in "Voodoo Child" is notable and some consider it some of the best ever in music. Notable expert in the field Joe Satriani said for MusicRadar:

"It's just the greatest piece of electric guitar work ever recorded. In fact, the whole song could be considered the holy grail of guitar expression and technique. It is a beacon of humanity."

When compiling their extensive list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time,"Rolling Stone placed the hit song at 101.

This Country Legend Died 33 Years Ago Today—but His Record-Breaking Legacy Lives On

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 11:05pm

Country music lost one of its most dominant hitmakers on June 5, 1993, when Conway Twitty died from an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

He was 59.

At the time of his death, Twitty was one of the most successful recording artists in the genre’s history, with a career defined by chart-topping consistency that spanned decades.

Born Harold Lloyd Jenkins, Twitty first broke through in 1958 with the pop crossover smash "It’s Only Make Believe," which reached No. 1 in both the U.S. and U.K.

The success launched him into national stardom and set the stage for a career that would eventually pivot him firmly into country music.

That transition proved to be one of the most successful reinventions in music history.

Over the years, Twitty amassed an unprecedented string of No. 1 country singles, holding the record for the most chart-toppers of any country artist—45 in total—until the milestone was surpassed in 2000.

His signature sound, marked by smooth vocals and emotionally direct storytelling, made him a staple of country radio and a favorite among fans for both his ballads and duet performances.

Twitty was also deeply connected to the Nashville area, living in Hendersonville, Tennessee, just north of the city.

There, he built Twitty City, a sprawling entertainment complex that became a popular attraction for fans and a symbol of his larger-than-life presence in country music.

Throughout his career, Twitty bridged the gap between pop and country audiences, helping shape the modern sound of the genre while maintaining a loyal fan base that spanned generations.

Even after his passing, his influence remains embedded in country music history, not only through his record-breaking achievements but through the enduring popularity of his songs.

1971 Rock Classic, Never a Major Chart Hit, Became One of the Greatest Guitar Songs Ever

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 10:59pm

It's one of the most revered guitar songs of all time, but "Stairway to Heaven" surprisingly wasn't a commercial chart success at the time of its initial release.

The 8-minute-long Led Zeppelinepic came out in November 1971 as part of the rock band's untitled fourth studio album, widely referred to as Led Zeppelin IV. Despite being known today as one of the most iconic rock songs ever, "Stairway to Heaven" was never released as a standalone single in the U.S., and therefore never even made it onto the Billboard Hot 100.

But even without ever being released as a single, the rock masterpiece still wound up becoming one of the most celebrated tracks in Led Zeppelin's catalog, and one of the most influential songs within the entire rock genre. With vocals and lyrics from Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, and a famous guitar solo from Jimmy Page, "Stairway to Heaven" became a rock music staple that still endures today, even over five decades later.

In 2023, the Library of Congress inducted "Stairway to Heaven" into the National Recording Registry for preservation due to its cultural significance and lasting impact. It was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003.

The song is also consistently ranked among some of the best songs in rock history, and even holds an impressive placement on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time," where it's ranked at No. 61. It's also included on the publication's ranking of the "100 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time," placing at No. 7 on that list.

And while it never made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100, "Stairway to Heaven" still became a giant radio it, and was the most requested song on FM radio stations in the '70s, according to Classics Du Jour.

The track also helped its host album become a giant success, as Led ZeppelinIV sold over 37 million copies worldwide (per ChartMasters), and reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in December 1971.

Steven Spielberg Says His Dad Made Him a Believer in Alien Life

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 10:42pm

Steven Spielberg has spent decades imagining what first contact might look like. With Disclosure Day arriving in theaters June 12, he says the question stopped being hypothetical a long time ago, and the origin of that belief traces back to a single conversation with his father.

'I've always believed, even as a child,' Spielberg told E! News. 'My dad really put it into my mind that we are not alone. He wasn't talking about Earth; he was talking about the cosmos. He said, 'There's intelligent life out there.' My dad read a lot of science fiction. So I was born believing that out there, intelligent life exists.'

That belief deepened over decades of watching eyewitness accounts pile up. Congressional hearings, documentaries, and firsthand testimonies, Spielberg says he went down every rabbit hole before production began on the film, which he developed from an original story idea of his own. Screenwriter David Koepp, whose earlier collaborations with Spielberg include Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds, helped turn that research into a script. What Spielberg found in all those accounts surprised him. 'None of these experiences were hostile,' he said. 'They were nonviolent. Maybe we have a lot to learn.'

He had a clear goal when making the film. 'I didn't set out to make an incredible movie out of Disclosure Day,' he said. 'I set out to make a credible movie.' The distinction matters to him. The film's tagline ('If you found out we weren't alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you?'), reflects that same deliberate ground-level framing.

Emily Blunt, who plays Margaret Fairchild, a character who inexplicably begins speaking languages she has never studied, spent weeks working with coaches to prepare, learning lines phonetically, syllable by syllable, in Russian, Korean, and other languages. She describes Spielberg as someone whose personality is inseparable from his work. 'His soul is in the movies that he makes,' she said. 'His joy, his belief in human beings is in every frame of his films. I've never known someone who makes films that are so emblematic of who they are as a person.'

Colman Domingo, who plays Hugo Wakefield, has said previously that he cried reading the script, calling it 'one of the most beautiful scripts about our humanity.' For Spielberg, the hope is that audiences leave the film with something harder to define than answers. 'I think at the end of our film people feel appropriately humbled,' he said, "and maybe that would be a very good thing for our rather fractured world right now.'

Disclosure Day opens in theaters nationwide June 12.

1970 Rock Classic, Originally Lasting 10 Minutes, Became a Timeless Power Anthem

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 10:10pm

In 1970, The Byrds released a song that stood apart from much of the music dominating radio at the time.

"Chestnut Mare" combined folk storytelling, country-rock influences and a sweeping sense of adventure into a track that would become one of the most celebrated songs of the band's later years.

What many listeners may not realize is that the song originally lasted around 10 minutes.

Written by Roger McGuinn and playwright Jacques Levy, "Chestnut Mare" began life as part of a much larger musical project. The pair had been working on an ambitious collection of songs inspired by American history and mythology, and the original version of "Chestnut Mare" was considerably longer than the recording that eventually reached listeners.

The song tells the story of a man attempting to tame a wild horse, using the relationship as a metaphor for freedom, perseverance and personal growth. Its cinematic lyrics and vivid imagery gave the track an epic feel, even after it was edited down from its original length.

"It's an adaptation of Peer Gynt's chase of the reindeer, or whatever it was, you know, like through the Netherlands," McGuinn said in an interview. "Well, we changed that into a chestnut mare, instead of a deer, 'cause you tend to find chestnut mares in America. The narrative became American, sort of old time cowboy.”

Released on the album (Untitled), the song showcased the evolving sound of The Byrds as they moved further into country rock and Americana influences.

By 1970, the band had already helped pioneer folk-rock through classics such as "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" but “Chestnut Mare” demonstrated their continued willingness to experiment with storytelling and longer-form songwriting.

Although it never became one of the group's biggest chart hits in the United States, the song developed a passionate following and became a concert favorite. Its uplifting chorus and themes of determination have helped it endure for decades.

Many fans also point to the track as an important bridge between the folk-rock sound that made The Byrds famous and the heartland rock and Americana styles that would flourish in later decades.

"You tend to find chestnut mares in America," McGuinn told Melody Maker. "The narrative became American, sort of old-time cowboy."

Over the years, "Chestnut Mare" has remained a staple of classic rock playlists and retrospective collections celebrating the band’s legacy. More than 50 years after its release, the song continues to resonate thanks to its powerful imagery, memorable melody and universal message about persistence.

For many listeners, "Chestnut Mare" stands as one of The Byrds' most ambitious achievements, a timeless power anthem born from a 10-minute epic and refined into one of the band’s most enduring classics.
