55 Hard Words To Pronounce and Spell That You’re Probably Getting Wrong

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 8:23pm

English pronunciation is, at times, a total guessing game. According to History Today, as English spelling shifted through the centuries and different standardizations were put in place, pronunciations also shifted, but not necessarily at the same rate. The result is that not all words have intuitive, phonetic spellings, and that makes several words hard to pronounce just by looking at them.

Plus, if you're an avid reader, you probably learned some words through sight only, and you may have no clue how they're said out loud. There's no shame in not knowing, or having trouble with, the proper pronunciation of certain words. English is a complicated language with a lot of seemingly random rules about what sounds certain letters make within certain words.

If you're looking to beef up your vocabulary, though, you're in the right place. Below is a breakdown of 55 commonly mispronounced or misspelled words and the correct pronunciation and meaning of each one. Use this handy phonetic guide, and you'll be saying all of these words correctly in no time. You'll impress your friends, teachers, coworkers and more with your suddenly extended vocabulary, and maybe you can even teach others around you a thing or two.

Why Are English Words Hard To Pronounce?

In English, several letters of the alphabet make different sounds depending on how they're arranged in individual words.

For example, the letter "I" has a short "ih" sound in words like "fish" and a long "eye" sound in words like "kite." Similarly, the letter "E" sounds like "eh" in words like "pet" and an "ee" sound in words like "me." Sometimes letters make no sound at all, like the "P" in "psychology." And spelling is occasionally totally unrelated to how a word should sound.

These frequent changes make it difficult to guess the pronunciation of a word just by looking at it and attempting to sound it out.

Taylor Frankie Paul Says She Slept With Dakota Mortensen the Day After 'Bachelorette' Engagement

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 7:54pm

Taylor Frankie Paul just shared a shocking revelation about her season of The Bachelorette.

Paul’s season was scheduled to premiere in March. However, ABC pulled the plug three days before its scheduled premiere after TMZ released a never-before-seen video that appeared to show Paul assaulting her ex-boyfriendDakota Mortensen in 2023.

Around the same time the season was canceled, two Utah police departments opened separate domestic violence investigations into alleged altercations between Paul and Mortensen that reportedly took place in February 2026.

In April, the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office announced they declined to file charges against Paul for the alleged incidents. However, she and Mortensen remain embroiled in a custody battle over their 2-year-old son, Ever.

During a TikTok Live on Wednesday, June 3, amid the ongoing custody dispute, Mortensen’s roommate, Cru Eaton, alleged that Paul slept with Mortensen shortly after returning home from filming The Bachelorette and cheated on the fiancée she left the show engaged to.

Paul appeared to address the claim in the comments section of one of her TikTok videos before later deleting her account. Rather than denying the allegation outright, she took issue with the timeline.

“same day u got engaged is crazy,” one fan wrote.

“No the day after,” Paul replied.

So far, there has been no official announcement regarding the fate of Paul's Bachelorette season, though longtime insider Reality Steve says the season will air sometime this summer.

Gossip site DeuxMoi also claims the season will be released only on Hulu between July and August, with the live finale will airing on ABC at the end of August.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of domestic violence, help is available 24 hours a day through the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233.

Madelene Sagstrom Is Almost 7 Months Pregnant and Playing the U.S. Women's Open: ‘Next Level Toughness’

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 7:49pm

Professional golfer Madelene Sagstrom is playing in the U.S. Women’s Open this week. While that’s news on its own, the real scoop is…she’s almost seven months pregnant!

While most mothers-to-be are more than happy to relax on a comfy couch with a big bowl of ice cream on a warm June day, Sagstrom is playing 18 holes against some of the toughest competitors in the world.

The 33-year-old told Golf, “Unless you are pregnant yourself or have kids, you don’t realize how hard it is.” She continued, “And I don’t think I realized it either. I mean, beginning this year, when I found out I was pregnant, I’m like, I’m gonna do this, this, and this. And then it hits you hard.”

Even though it would be easy to take a break and go on an extended maternity leave, the golfer has a more adventurous view of her pro career: “But it’s kind of fun to test the boundaries. Like, what can I do? Can I actually figure this out?”

Who is Madelene Sagstrom’s husband?

Sagstrom and her husband, PGA Tour caddy Jack Clarke, announced their baby news in March. The couple married in September of 2024, just days before Sagstrom played for Team Europe in the Solheim Cup. This is the first child for the pair.

How has pregnancy changed the way Madelene Sagstrom plays golf?

The two-time LPGA Tour winner (in 2020 and 2024) recently opened up to the LPGA, sharing, “It’s kind of interesting. Having your body change so much without you having any control over it, it’s sparked a lot of curiosity within me, so I think that has been fun. I've worked super hard with Callaway to change all my clubs, other than my putter.”

Sagstrom added, “I changed all my irons from Jersey, and I’m just hitting them so good. I’m playing well. I can still do this.”

Of course, Sagstrom isn’t taking anything for granted. The pro golfer explained, “I said I wouldn’t do this to myself if I was hurting, or if it was any risk for the baby, or if I was playing too bad. But I’m not, so why not?”

View this post on Instagram

Fans and friends flocked to a recent Instagram post applauding the 27-week-pregnant Sagstrom on her absolutely amazing accomplishment. One commenter wrote, “Unbelievable, much respect for you! I cross my fingers for you and your family,” while another said, “You’ll be shooting straight ahead; pregnancy gives you an edge.”

In a second post about the U.S. Women’s Open, fans raved, “That is so next level toughness” and “Love to see this. It takes serious skill playing golf while pregnant. Awesome role model.” Forget about Scottie Schefflerand Rory McIlroy. Another commenter added, “Coolest thing happening in golf right now!”

1964 Dance Number That Upstaged ‘The King’ Ranked Among Greatest Rock ’n’ Roll Movie Moments

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 7:37pm

When it comes to Vegas, always bet on red. With her fiery coif, primal moves, and dynamic presence, Ann-Margret is always on the money. And in the 1964 filmViva Las Vegas, the Swedish beauty is a firecracker — most notably during the scene-stealing dance number set to The King’s “C’mon Everybody,” which Rolling Stone named one of the greatest rock ’n’ roll movie moments of all time.

View this post on Instagram

A commercial hit, Viva Las Vegas was released in May 1964 during the height of Elvis Presley’ reign on both the stage and the screen. Written by Sally Benson and directed by George Sidney with choreography by David Winters, it stars Presley as Lucky Jackson, a race car driver smitten by a swim instructor named Rusty Martin, played by Ann-Margret. Over the course of the reel, the pair sing, dance, race, fly — it’s flashy, it’s fast, it’s a Vegas spectacle.

Near the beginning of the film is when the legendary dance sequence happens. Lucky meets Rusty at a local gymnasium to “dance.” Lucky then breaks into “C’mon Everybody,” a party anthem written specifically for the film by Joy Byers. Meanwhile, Rusty can’t help but swivel her hips and lose herself in the notes.

“And this is why Elvis is the King,” RS writes. “Not because he made dozens of these movies, most of them total cheese. Not because they’re all full of corny scenes where he can just stroll into the local gym and get begged to do a song like this. … No, he’s the King because of the superhuman confidence he brings to every moment.”

For all his swagger, though, it’s Ann-Margret who ultimately steals the scene: “Elvis would be the first to admit that even the King can’t outwiggle Ann-Margret,” RS adds. With her explosive “orgasmic frenzy” and irresistible “Sweden-sired hips” fueling the montage, this electrifying dance number is the defining moment the film shifts from fun to unforgettable.

To this day, Viva Las Vegas is widely considered the best of Presley's film catalog, fueled by his on-screen chemistry with Ann-Margret. The film even claims director Steven Spielberg, who had publicly named Viva Las Vegas one of his all-time favorite movies, one of its biggest fans. We call that the jackpot.

Viva Las Vegas is streaming for free on Tubi.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Legend Cheri Oteri Looks Better Than Ever at 63 on the Red Carpet

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 7:28pm

Cheri Oteri, a Saturday Night Live legend, looks better than ever on the red carpet.

Oteri, 63, who rose to fame on SNL with characters like Arianna of The Spartan Cheerleaders alongside Will Ferrell, Cass Van Rye on Morning Latte, and Nadeen, a disgruntled employee who told everyone to “Simmer down now,” departed the iconic late-night series in 2000. In the years that followed, Oteri made endless TV and film appearances, but avoided the major spotlight that claimed many of her famous former co-stars. But in a recent red carpet appearance at the Scary Movie 6 premiere, the actress looked absolutely stunning in a halter-neck dress.

Why Did Cheri Oteri Leave SNL?

Last year, Oteri told Entertainment Weekly that departing the series after the season 25 finale on May 20, 2000, was a difficult choice. However, it was the right one.

“I wanted to end on a high and not a low. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made,” she told EW. “I thought, I can’t quit. I’m not a quitter. Then my agent at the time said, it’s not about you quitting, it’s do you want to renew your contract? I think I could have stayed there for 10 years if it wasn’t so hard.”

While it was bittersweet to leave, Oteri said her decision not to return was “a part of taking care of myself.”

"It was everything I ever wanted to do. I got to live my dream,” she said. “I have no regrets whatsoever. I just feel nothing but gratitude.”

What’s Cheri Oteri up to These Days?

SNL fans rejoiced when they heard that Oteri would guest star on an episode of Happy’sPlace that aired in December. The comedy queen took on a guest-starring role as a health inspector named Monica, TV Insider reported.

Graza Is Taking Its Olive Oil Expertise Beyond the Kitchen

The company, best known for its single-origin Spanish extra virgin olive oils, approached its latest launch with the same philosophy it uses for its oils: start with quality ingredients and keep things simple.

Instead of relying on the vegetable oils commonly used in snack foods, Graza makes its new Homestyle Potato Chips with 100 percent extra virgin olive oil. According to the brand, the chips start with specially sourced yellow-skin, yellow-flesh potatoes that are fried until golden and crispy before being finished with seasonings.

The lineup includes four flavors:

  • Classic Sea Salt
  • Sea Salt & Vinegar
  • Hot 'N Sweet
  • Zesty Caesar

The chips are rolling out exclusively at Target stores nationwide.

Fans Can't Stop Talking About the Zesty Caesar Flavor

While each flavor sounds delicious, the Zesty Caesar variety seems to be generating the most excitement online. Inspired by the savory, garlicky flavors of classic Caesar dressing, it gives the snack aisle a flavor profile that stands out from more traditional chip offerings.

That said, after trying all four flavors myself, I found it difficult to pick a bad one. Each variety delivers a satisfying crunch and rich flavor thanks to the olive oil cooking method. Still, I kept reaching for the Classic Sea Salt. The simple seasoning lets the potato and olive oil flavors shine, creating a chip that feels elevated without trying too hard.

Whether you're already a fan of the brand's squeeze bottles or simply curious about a new snack, these chips offer a fresh way to experience what made Graza popular in the first place. Judging by the early reaction, plenty of shoppers are ready to add a bag to their carts.

1985 Power Ballad, Originally Rejected by Rock Queen, Became Iconic Band's First No. 1 Hit

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 7:25pm

While Heart definitely produced their most critically acclaimed, fan-favorite songs during the '70s, like "Barracuda" and "Crazy on You," the band's most commercially successful hits didn't come along until the '80s.

And though their earlier hits were mostly written or co-written by Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart's very first track to make it all the way to #1 was the result of another musical partnership: Bernie Taupin and Martin Page (the magic-making duo behind Starship's "We Built This City").

Released as the third single from Heart's 1985 self-titled album, "These Dreams" peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 22, 1986, where it stayed for one week. The members of Heart clearly knew a hit when they heard one...although, as Page explained to Songwriter Universe in 2017, another iconic rock queen — Stevie Nicks — apparently did not.

According to Page, at the time, Taupin wasn't writing as much with Elton John and had some time on his hands, so a music exec suggested the two collaborate.

"The first two lyrics Bernie sent me were 'We Built This City' and 'These Dreams.' He just faxed the lyrics to me," Page recalled. "The lyrics would come through the fax machine, and I would just put the paper by the keyboard and off I would go. I liked this approach—it was good for me, because I’m always a chordal, melodic person first. And then I did little 8-track demos of them at home, just to show we could do this. When Bernie heard the demos he said, 'This is going to be great; I’m into this 100%.'"

Originally, “These Dreams" was called “Boys In The Mist.”

"It was a lyric that he had originally given to Stevie Nicks," Page explained. "But Stevie wasn’t interested in it or wasn’t available to do it, so he sent it to me. I was able to convince him to change the title to 'These Dreams' — he had written [those words] in the bridge. And he let me move it around."

Heart

Considering the song's mystical lyrics, it makes sense that "These Dreams" was originally conceived of with Nicks in mind:

Spare a little candle, save some light for me
Figures up ahead moving in the trees
White skin in linen, perfume on my wrist
And the full moon that hangs over these dreams in the mist

Darkness on the edge, shadows where I stand
I search for the time on a watch with no hands
I want to see you clearly, come closer than this
But all I remember are the dreams in the mist

Of course, while Nicks would have no doubt delivered an amazing version of "These Dreams," Nancy Wilson knocked it out of the park — and it was the first time she sang lead on a Heart song. Not only that, but according to Fred Bronson's The Billboard Book of Number One Hits, Nancy had a cold when she recorded the song...which turned out to be a stroke of luck. (Her raspy vocals were so popular, producers even joked about her getting sick again for future recordings.)

Psychologist Says if You Laugh Even When You Don’t Fully Get the Joke, You Likely Have These 7 Traits

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 7:11pm

Picture this: you’re hanging out with a group of friends at dinner, talking and laughing the night away. But some jokes just go clear over your head, and you let out a hearty laugh, even though you know that you didn’t get it. Or, perhaps you’re on a break with several co-workers, and someone tells a joke—but you laugh anyway.

Maybe “pretend” laughing at things that other people find funny is a frequent occurrence for you. One 2021 niche study commissioned by a British television station reported that 67% of respondents have laughed at jokes they don’t understand so that they won’t look silly to others. Studies have also found that older adults have a harder time understanding jokes as they age.

While not “getting” jokes is understandable (after all, we don’t all share the same sense of humor), it can make you feel naive, or even ignorant, when you don’t get a joke, especially when everyone else in the group is laughing about it. This might cause you to “fake” laugh, just to fit in.

Disingenuous laughing can indicate that you hold other personality traits as well, according to a psychologist.

Why Do Some People 'Miss' Jokes?

Clinical psychologist Dr. Natalie Feinblatt says that people can miss jokes for a few different reasons.

“Sometimes they simply don’t have the background knowledge or context needed to understand it. Other times they may not be fully paying attention in the moment. For some neurodivergent individuals, especially those who process language more literally, it can be harder to recognize when something is meant as a joke,” she tells Parade.

Neurodivergent people can include those with ADHD, autism and other mental health conditions.

Why Do They Laugh, Even if They Don’t Get the Joke?

Laughing when you don’t get the joke often comes down to “social dynamics,” as Dr. Feinblatt puts it. She says that people may feel anxious or want to fit in, and laughing can feel like the safest way to stay connected to the group.

“There can also be a fear of appearing uncool, out of the loop or unintelligent, so laughing becomes a kind of social default,” she adds.

7 Traits of People Who Laugh Even if They Miss a Joke, According to a Psychologist

These are some common traits attributed to individuals who crack up, even if they don't understand a quip.

1. Social anxiety

Social anxiety is a diagnosable mental health condition that’s marked by an intense fear of being judged or embarrassed in social situations. If you have this, it makes perfect sense that you’d laugh at a joke you don’t get.

“People may laugh to reduce discomfort or avoid drawing attention to themselves,” Dr. Feinblatt says.

2. Desire to fit in

According to Dr. Feinblatt, laughing helps signal belonging, “even if they don’t fully understand what’s happening.” Any sort of laughing can help you feel as if you’re part of the group.

3. Fear of negative judgement

You likely don’t want to seem as if you’re “out of the loop” or “clueless,” and Dr. Feinblatt says that fake laughing can help you “go along with the group.”

4. People-pleasing tendencies

“Some individuals prioritize others’ comfort over their own authenticity,” Dr. Feinblatt says.

5. Struggles with cultural references

You may fake laugh because you have difficulties with contextual or cultural references, as Dr. Feinblatt puts it. “Without shared knowledge, the joke may not land, but the social cue to laugh is still there,” she says.

6. Easily distracted

You may often find yourself daydreaming or distracted by what’s going on beyond your group, and this can lead to missing the joke and laughing anyway. If you struggle with inattention, and if you “didn’t fully hear or process the joke,” you may “laugh to keep up,” Dr. Feinblatt explains.

7. Literal thinking style

“Some neurodivergent individuals may not immediately recognize something as a joke,” Dr. Feinblatt says.

Related: Psychologist Says if You Rehearse Conversations in Your Head Before They Happen, You Likely Have These 8 Traits

What To Do Instead of 'Pretending' to Laugh

Even though it might feel natural to laugh at a joke you don’t understand, you don’t always have to go the inauthentic route just to fit in.

“You can respond in a light, friendly way and ask for clarification. For example, ‘Uh-oh, I don’t get it. Can someone fill me in?’” Dr. Feinblatt advises. “That kind of response is actually more authentic and vulnerable, and most people appreciate it more than pretending.”

She goes on to say that it’s completely okay not to get every joke, explaining, “You don’t have to laugh just to fit in, and there’s nothing wrong with asking for clarification. In many cases, being genuine actually leads to better, more comfortable social interactions."

1994 Crime Classic That Nearly Cast a Different Star in Its Most Famous Role Ranked Quentin Tarantino's Best Movie Ever

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 7:07pm

When it comes to ranking Quentin Tarantinomovies, everyone has an opinion. Some fans swear by Reservoir Dogs. Others will argue endlessly for Inglourious Basterds or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But USA Today begs to differ, sharing its pick for the best Tarantino film of all time: Pulp Fiction.

It's hard to imagine Pulp Fiction without its iconic John Travolta/Uma Thurman dance scene or Travolta's star-making turn as Vincent Vega, but the role was originally meant for another actor—Michael Madsen—who had worked with Tarantino on Reservoir Dogs.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/endeeMGCncE

Tarantino wrote the part of Vincent Vega with Madsen in mind. Two weeks before the Pulp Fiction script was complete, Madsen took another role. The rest is movie history, at least for John Travolta.

Why Pulp Fiction Still Stands Above the Rest

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/RxLnnr6K51Q

More than 30 years after its release, Pulp Fiction remains the movie most people associate with Tarantino. The film didn't just become a hit—it became a cultural phenomenon.

Part of that is the cast. Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson created one of cinema's most memorable duos, while Uma Thurman delivered a career-defining performance as Mia Wallace. Add in Bruce Willis, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Christopher Walken, Amanda Plummer, and Ving Rhames, and you've got one of the most stacked ensembles ever assembled.

Then there are the film's still-quotable lines, featuring Tarantino's signature blend of humor, tension, and pop culture references that transformed ordinary conversations into indelible on-screen moments.

No discussion of Pulp Fiction is complete without mentioning the iconic dance sequence between Travolta and Thurman at Jack Rabbit Slim's. The twist contest is still one of the most recognizable moments in movie history and remains endlessly referenced, parodied, and celebrated.

The film's inventive structure was equally groundbreaking. Audiences weren't just watching a crime movie—they were piecing together a puzzle. The film's nonlinear storytelling helped separate Pulp Fiction from nearly everything else in theaters in the early 1990s.

The Lasting Legacy of Tarantino's Greatest Film

Pulp Fiction was a quirky independent film USA Today calls "just crazy enough to work on a mainstream level," but what's most noteworthy about the No. 1 pick is the fact that decades later, the movie still feels fresh.

Pulp Fiction wasn't just edgy and innovative for its time; it remains a timeless crime classic celebrated by new generations of fans.

Pulp Fiction helped redefine independent cinema, turned Tarantino into one of Hollywood's most sought-after filmmakers, and created an on-screen blueprint that countless directors have tried to replicate ever since.

Tarantino's catalog is filled with iconic films featuring Hollywood legends in star-making roles, but there is no Tarantino film that transformed modern cinema quite like Pulp Fiction.

The Special Meaning Behind Kate Middleton's Honeycomb Bee Earrings

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 7:06pm

Kate Middleton visited a cancer care center in Manchester today wearing her honeycomb bee earrings—which she chose for a special reason.

The bee is the symbol of Manchester because the bee "is an industrious little grafter, individually insignificant but collectively a superorganism."

The last time we saw the Princess of Wales wearing the earrings was in 2022 when she and Prince William opened the Glade of Light Memorial in Manchester, which commemorates the 22 lives lost in the 2017 bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester Arena.

Featuring bee and honeycomb charms, the earrings were specially designed for Kate by VanLeles Diamonds and pay tribute to Mancunians’ “hard work ethic.”

For her visit to  The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester today Kate paired the earrings with a blue coatdress by Eponine.

During her conversation with a patient, Kate—who announced in March 2024 that she was diagnosed with cancer and in January 2025 that she was in remission—said she knew how "hard" it is for the families of cancer patients.

"I know how hard it was for the children and my parents," she said. "You go through it with them."

Earlier this year on February 6 Kate shared a message for World Cancer Day via her and Prince William's official Instagram account.

“On World Cancer Day, my thoughts are with everyone who is facing a cancer diagnosis, undergoing treatment or finding their way through recovery,” she said.

“Cancer touches so many lives—not only patients, but the families and friends and caregivers who walk beside them.”

She went on, "As anyone who has experienced this journey will know, it’s not linear. There are moments of fear and exhaustion. But also moments of strength, kindness, and profound connection."

In the last few months Kate has been seen out and about more and more often in her role as the Princess of Wales.

Two days ago she stepped out alongside her father-in-lawKing Charles III to mark the 125th anniversary of Cancer Research UK.

Kate wore a cute silk red dress by Rodarte, whose white polka dot pattern in the shape of tiny hearts was very on brand for this season.

In May her solo trip to Italy marked her first international trip since she underwent treatment for cancer two years ago.

And in March Kate stepped out in her first tiara look of 2026: the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, which she paired with a forest green Andrew Gn gown for the Nigerian state banquet at Windsor Castle.

The elegant tiara, featuring 19 pearls hanging from a series of diamond-encrusted arches each topped with a lover’s knot design, was one that Princess Diana was frequently pictured in during her lifetime.

The color is thought to have been chosen as a tribute to the green in the Nigerian flag.

This weekend is set to be a family affair for Kate and William as they attend the wedding of Prince William's cousin Peter Philips to nurse Harriet Sperling.

The wedding reception will be hosted by Princess Anne on her Gatcombe estate—find out which of the royals are invited (or uninvited) here!

1975 Pop Rock Hit Written in a 'Matter of Minutes' Became the Ultimate Breakup Anthem

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 6:59pm

Most classic breakup songs are on the sad side, but others are a bit more...angry. Falling into the latter category would definitely be Electric Light Orchestra's "Evil Woman" (as the title suggests).

Released off the band's fifth studio album, Face the Music, in 1975, "Evil Woman" became ELO's first worldwide hit, peaking at #10 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the U.K. Singles chart and setting the group up for future chart-topping success with songs like "Mr. Blue Sky" and "Don't Bring Me Down."

Not bad for a song that was written pretty much on the spot, as Jeff Lynne explained years later.

“I wrote this in a matter of minutes,” Lynne told Rolling Stonein 2016.

“The rest of the album [Face the Music] was done," he continued. "I listened to it and thought, ‘There’s not a good single.’ So I sent the band out to a game of football and made up ‘Evil Woman’ on the spot. The first three chords came right to me. It was the quickest thing I’d ever done. We kept it slick and cool, kind of like an R&B song. It was kind of a posh one for me, with all the big piano solos and the string arrangement. It was inspired by a certain woman, but I can’t say who. She’s appeared a few times in my songs.”

Whoever Lynne was writing about, it's clear that the two didn't part ways amicably:

Ha, ha, woman, what you gonna do?
You destroyed all the virtues that the Lord gave you
It's so good that you're feelin' pain
But you better get your face on board the very next train

Evil woman
Evil woman
Evil woman (you're an evil woman)
Evil woman

Even though "Evil Woman" was a major breakthrough for the band, Lynne said the song's success didn't actually make a huge difference for ELO.

“Playing concerts in those days wasn’t fun,” he recalled. “The sound was always bad, and we were still playing theatres and town halls, the occasional dance hall. After ‘Evil Woman’, we got more gigs, but it didn’t change my life all that much. You can’t buy a palace or anything after just one hit.”

Luckily for Lynne, "Evil Woman" wasn't his last hit. According to Finance Monthly, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's net worth is estimated to be around $100 million dollars. (Sounds like enough for a palace.)

1968 Film Was Just Named the 'Most Important,' Genre-Defining Horror Movie

Thu, 06/04/2026 - 6:36pm

Due to the genre's usually upsetting subject matter and often metaphorical themes, the likability of a specific horror movie is entirely subjective. However, most horror enthusiasts can point out a few films that have been undeniably influential to the genre.

For instance, Collider recently released a ranking of "the four most important horror movies that define the genre," which features the films 1973's The Exorcist, Psycho from 1960, and The Silence of the Lambs, released in 1991. The list's top spot went to 1968's Night of the Living Dead, directed by George A. Romero. According to the publication, fans of zombie flicks and TV shows can thank Night of the Living Dead for establishing several tropes regarding the undead.

Night of the Living Dead has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95 percent and a Metacritic score of 89.

George A. Romero Said He Didn't Intend for the Creatures in 'Night of the Living Dead' to be Zombies

While Night of the Living Dead is often considered the top zombie movie, Romero, who died in 2017 at the age of 77, revealed he actually considered the creatures in the film "ghouls."

"I thought I was creating a completely new monster, you know, the neighbors suddenly turned into flesh-eaters, ghouls. And that's what I call them, ghouls, in the film. And I thought they were completely new," said the director in a 2013 interview with Grolsch Global.

He clarified that he began calling the creatures zombies in the Night of the Living Dead's sequel, Dawn of the Dead, which premiered in 1978. He also explained that it wasn't "until the second film" in the spooky franchise that he established the undead monsters were wandering souls that Hell rejected.

"'When there's no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the earth,' and that was actually the tagline for the second film, when I finally gave up and decided to call them zombies," said the director.
