Neil Young wrote "Ohio" in an hour. On May 4, 1970, four unarmed student protesters were killed by National Guard members at Kent State University in Ohio. The students were specifically protesting the recently revealed U.S. bombing of Cambodia, what Graham Nash later described as "a secret policy of slaughter on a mass scale." David Crosby handed Young a copy of Life magazine with photographs of the shootings on the cover. This was the catalyst.

Young looked away, then he looked back. Next, he grabbed a guitar. Some say he went off into the woods; others believe Young began writing immediately as Crosby watched. In 15 minutes, the song existed. Crosby worked on the harmony while Young was still finishing the words. An hour after Young first saw those devastating photos, "Ohio" was done. CSNY recorded it and released it 10 days after the shootings. The song mentioned President Nixon by name. AM radio banned it. And it's still playing in 2026.

Nash described what the moment felt like for the band. "We were killing our own children," he said. It wasn't rhetoric. Four students, somebody's children, had just been shot dead on a college campus for protesting a war they didn't believe in. Young picked up a guitar and returned with an answer.

The song was recorded at Record Plant Studio 3 in Hollywood by Bill Halverson on May 21, 1970. In the liner notes, Young wrote that the Kent State shootings were "probably the biggest lesson ever learned at an American place of learning." He also wrote that "David Crosby cried when we finished this take."

CSNY already had "Teach Your Children" on the charts. They rush-released "Ohio" alongside it, not caring about the effect it would have on their own single. Ten days after four students were killed at Kent State, the song about their deaths was on the radio.

David Crosby said that Young keeping President Nixon's name in the lyric was "the bravest thing I ever heard." The song opens:

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming
We're finally on our own
This summer I hear the drumming
Four dead in Ohio

AM radio stations banned the song, even including some in Ohio itself. The B-side was Stephen Stills' "Find the Cost of Freedom." Even the flip side was a protest song. FM stations and college radio played it constantly. It still peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the song's fade, Crosby's voice can be heard: "Four. Why? How many more?"

Nixon criticized the song. Two years later, he won re-election, winning the state of Ohio by over 21 percentage points. The protest song that named him didn't stop him. The Guardian called "Ohio" "the greatest protest record" ever made in 2010. The song outlasted Nixon, the war, and the era that produced it.

55 Years Later the Song Is Still Playing and Still Asking Why

Neil Young considers "Ohio" the best song he wrote with CSNY. David Crosby, whose voice fades out at the end asking why, died on January 19, 2023. Graham Nash is 84. Stephen Stills is 81. Neil Young is 80. One of the four men who gathered to record "Ohio" in a single afternoon in Hollywood is gone. The song they made is still here.

Young has never stopped performing it live. A version recorded at Massey Hall in 1971 wasn't released until 2007. It was as if the song had been waiting for the right moment to be heard again.

In 2026, "Ohio" is being discovered by a new generation on TikTok — millions of views. Young listeners are adding it to playlists alongside their favorite contemporary artists, hearing for the first time a song that sounds like it was written this morning. The 55th anniversary of the Kent State shootings passed on May 4, 2025. The Grammy Hall of Fame inducted "Ohio" in 2009. Classic rock stations still play it every week.

Free was an English rock band that formed in 1968 and became known for two hit tracks, with "Wishing Well" becoming their last major hit before breaking up months after its release.

The band consisting of Paul Rodgers (vocals), Paul Kossoff (guitar), Andy Fraser (bass, piano), and Simon Kirke (drums) had already released three albums by 1972. Their track "All Right Now," released in 1970, was the golden ticket that skyrocketed them to fame and made them one of the best-selling bands of the early '70s with a standout stage presence.

Alongside "All Right Now," their second biggest track was "Wishing Well," which would also become their last major hit before they disbanded in 1973. In reality, the band had broken up much earlier in 1971 and reunited in 1972.

"Wishing Well" was released as a single on the UK charts and reached No.7, and landed at No. 112 on the Billboard chart. While the track is credited to the band, it's often considered to be Rodgers' song and was included in their final studio album, Heartbreaker. Many believed the song's lyrics were about Kossoff, who had developed a serious drug habit as early as 15 years old.

According to SongFacts, Rodgers denied that it was about the band member and said it was written about an "imaginary person." The frontman would later admit that, "I wrote 'Wishing Well' as a fun tune to play live, but unconsciously it may have been about people I knew."

Upon its release, many interpreted the song's lyrics as having been about Kossoff, with AllMusic having once commented, "Lyrically, the song can be interpreted many ways, but it appears on the surface to be an angry message to a friend with heavy substance abuse problems who has one foot in 'the wishing well', which is possibly an analogy for 'one foot in the grave'. Next to 'All Right Now', this is indeed the band's most important - and perhaps finest moment."

The track was Free's last charting hit of their career, as Rodgers and Kirke left the band and co-formed the rock supergroup Bad Company. Kossoff would also go on to form his own band called Back Street Crawler, with Fraser having left much earlier in 1972 to form Sharks. Sadly, Kossoff would die years after the release of "Wishing Well" in 1976 from a pulmonary embolism on a flight from Los Angeles to New York.

Free has often been tagged as one of the "British rock pioneers," with Rodgers considered one of the greatest singers of all time. Kossoff has also been regarded as one of the greatest guitarists by Rolling Stone.

The Beach Boys have decided to postpone all of their Endless Summer Gold Tour, which was set to take place between July 23 and Sept. 3. It was set to include original member Mike Love as well as several other musicians.

Mike Love shared the band's statement with the news on Instagram.

"Playing for you is the highlight of our summer every year—especially as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States while saluting the 60th Anniversary of Pet Sounds," they wrote. "We’ve been having a blast out there, and to keep the good vibrations going strong, we’ll be taking a short break to recharge before getting back on the road in September.

"All tickets for postponed performances (July 23 through September 3) will be honored following our return in late September," the band continued. " Please contact your local box office for additional information and questions. Thanks for your love—we can’t wait to see you back out there for a September to Remember."

Love also shared the rescheduled tour dates.

Anson Mount is revealing the way that his wife reacted to Joy Behar kissing him during his recent The Viewappearance.

The View co-host, 83, gave the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds actor, 53, a lengthy kiss on the lips during his Wednesday, July 22, visit to the ABC talk show, telling the audience that she was "old" but "not dead" after the unexpected moment.

Following Wednesday's show, Mount revealed how his wife of eight years, Darah Trang, responded to the lip lock, joking to TV Insider, "I asked my wife to promise me that she wouldn’t divorce me."

He then added on a more serious note that Trang "thought it was hilarious," revealing that when he last appeared on The View more than a decade ago, he had brought Behar flowers, which apparently "made an impression."

"So we’ll see what she does next time," he teased.

Mount also discussed the kiss with Decider, telling the outlet that the smooch wasn't discussed before it happened. “Yeah, that was surprising. If anything’s gonna take you off your game, reset your head, that was it,” he said. “I was present after that.”

“She’s so funny,” Mount went on. “That whole group of ladies was so hospitable. I was really just happy to be there.”

Behar, who has been married to husband Steve Janowitz since 2011, also shared her thoughts on the viral moment during the corresponding episode of Behind the Table with The View executive producer Brian Teta.

"All morning I’ve been hearing about Anson Mount, and I’ve been making jokes about his name,” Behar said, later explaining, “When he came out, I just felt like kissing him.”

Behar said that after Mount had kissed her on the cheek, she whispered "lips" into his ear before pulling him in for a real kiss. But while Mount's wife might have laughed the moment off, Behar joked that her own husband had a different reaction, texting her during the show, to "cut that out."

Ever had something named after you? Imagine that honor being a "minor planet."

This week marks 32 years since the International Astronomical Union named an asteroid orbiting between Mars and Jupiter after Frank Zappa, who had died the previous December.

"Minor planet number 3834 has been named in honor of innovative rock musician Frank Zappa," reads the official announcement at the time, according to the union's website. "Named in memory of Frank Zappa (1940-1993), rock musician and composer of innovative contemporary symphonic, chamber and electronic music. Zappa was an eclectic, self-trained artist and composer with incredible energy and a biting wit, and his music transcends the usual music barriers. Before 1989 he was regarded as a symbol of democracy and freedom by many people in Czechoslovakia."

For those not familiar, Zappa was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. His mainstream claim to fame might be “Valley Girl,” which featured his 14-year-old daughter, Moon Zappa. Maurice Benard has been part of the fabric of the ABC soap opera since August 13, 1993; now the three-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning star has opened up about which of his many storylines was his favorite.

Back in 2018, Sonny Corinthos' father Mike Corbin (Max Gail) was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and over the course of the following two years, General Hospital showed the effects that the disease has not only on those who are diagnosed, but the family and friends of those who are around them.

On his Instagram account, Benard posted a montage of the scenes and shared, “The Alzheimer’s storyline was definitely top three.” He then revealed that while Sonny was navigating this experience with his father, Benard was, too. “My father got Alzheimer’s at the same time Sonny’s father also got it.”

Benard also revealed that both stories ended at a similar time. “Sonny’s father eventually died at around the time that my father died.”

The actor went on to thank executive producer Frank Valentini, all the writers, directors, and crew, before also thanking his co-stars Laura Wright, Dominic Zamprogna, Matt Cohen, Vernee Watson, Rebeca Herbst, Steve Burton, “and the incomparable Max Gail.”

Mike Wolfe's heartbreaking tribute to his beloved dog, Francie Joe, has struck a chord with fans, who are rallying around the American Pickers star after he revealed he feels "very much responsible" for her death in what he called a tragic accident.

In an emotional Instagram post, Wolfe said his "heart is shattered in a thousand pieces" after losing Francie Joe and admitted he never got the chance to say goodbye or comfort her in her final moments.

While grieving the dog he called "family" and "everything I ever dreamed of in a dog," Wolfe blamed himself for the accident—a sentiment that prompted hundreds of followers to urge him to let go of the guilt, reminding him that Francie Joe knew she was deeply loved and wouldn't want him to carry the burden.

HGTV star Ty Pennington, whose dog Georgia died unexpectedly at his home in Florida in 2024, could relate and shared his condolences. "Omg Man. I’m so sorry," he wrote. "I can’t even wrap my head around losing our best friends. They’re the best things we ever find in this world."

Wolfe's American Pickers costar, Danielle Colby, wrote, "I love you brother. I will miss Francie so much. You were her guiding light and she yours. You will meet again in another timeline, you will always meet again. Your bond was too strong not to. My heart is with you."

Francie Joe was more than Wolfe's pet; she was his constant companion. Adopted around 2020, she joined the American Pickers star on picking trips across the country, spent time at his Antique Archaeology shops and offices, and accompanied him during work and outdoor adventures.

Fans also grew to know Francie Joe through frequent appearances on the show and Wolfe's social media, where she became a beloved fixture.

Mary Kate Golding, a 34-year-old set designer who worked on shows including The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Goosebumps, was found stabbed to death in the basement of her New York City home, police sources told PEOPLE.

It is being investigated as a “possible murder-suicide” involving her husband, who was found dead hours later in a park near the home.

According to the outlet, police were called to the residence after midnight on Tuesday, July 21, where Golding was found with a stab wound to her back. She was pronounced dead at the scene. At 6:39 a.m., police then responded to a call of "an unconscious person in the vicinity of Astoria Park South and Shore Boulevard," where they found a man "unconscious and unresponsive inside the park." He was pronounced dead at the scene and was later identified as Joseph Azzaretto, who was Golding’s husband.

Page Six further reports that the couple's 11-month-old son Nolan was left alone in the house with his mother after she was killed. The sources added that Golding's friends came and picked up the child after Azzaretto called and confessed to the killing.

“When her friend came and found the body, she was screaming,” a neighbor told Page Six.

“He was an angry person,” a neighbor added regarding Azzaretto. “I decided to avoid him. I didn’t even look at his text messages.” 

Police believe her husband is connected to her murder, as they got into an argument earlier that night, sources added. He left the home in a minivan after Golding was killed and told a family member about what he did, which led to them calling authorities.

In many ways, starring on a beloved sitcom can be a lot like experiencing the glory days of college, allowing the actors to form lifelong bonds and form some of the greatest memories of their personal and professional lives.

In this sense, it's no surprise that series star Adam Scott refuses to rewatch NBC's hit comedy series, believing such a feat would only lead to sadness and a longing to return to the sitcom's set.

As Scott explained on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Severance actor personally hasn't seen an episode of Parks and Rec in "a long time."

“Honestly because it makes me sad to see the show, because I miss them and I miss all the actors even though we’re constantly in touch and stuff, but I miss the time of making it," Scott said. “It was a really just joyful five years — for me, seven years for the show — getting to go work there every day with that group of people."

As fans are sure to remember, Scott famously played the role of Ben Wyatt on Parks and Rec, a fan-favorite role that helped propel him to further heights in the mainstream entertainment industry.

Alongside Scott, Parks and Rec starred Amy Poehler, Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Adam Scott, Rashida Jones, Aubrey Plaza, Rob Lowe, focusing on the chaotic antics of a Indiana parks department navigating the day-to-day life of small-town government.

"We had so much fun and we’re making something that meant something to people; it meant something to us,” Scott went on to add.

As many good memories as Scott has of the show, he also admitted to not wanting to launch any reboot or continuation of Parks and Rec, believing the series' finale did a great job providing a sendoff for the show's narrative.

“The show itself, the series finale kind of took us to the end. It jumped pretty far ahead into the future, so I’m not sure what else there is to add, but it’s entirely not up to me at all,” Scott explained.

Earth, Wind, & Firewere the unquestionable icons of the disco era, and released "Boogie Wonderland," which became one of their most popular tracks and one of their most misunderstood.

In 1979, the band released their ninth studio album, I Am, with the track promoted as its first single. Unlike prior hit tracks, "Boogie Wonderland" was written and composed by Allee Willis and Jon Lind. The track did the job of becoming popular among fans and a hit at the disco clubs, but its lyrics also talk about dreary reality and disco's escapism.

According to an interview withTop 2000 a go go, Willis explained that the track's title and term "boogie wonderland" represent a mindset. She explained that "they go out to a club every night to forget themselves. So maybe the state of mind that they could be in was…kind of like a ‘boogie wonderland.'"

Willis admits that many people had told her how much they like the track and how it makes them "very happy." According to Song Writing Magazine, she often wonders if fans have listened to the lyrics that are "very deep and depressing."

"We decided to make the verse very dark, like there was something haunting about it, and then when it gets to the chorus it should sound happy, bright and uplifting. It’s almost like a very profound mood shift," she explained.

"It never really mattered to me whether people got that or not. I’m proud because it really is a song that appears to be one thing but is actually something else. And I think the mood that we wanted to convey is definitely there.."

In reality, "Boogie Wonderland" came about after Willis watched the 1977 crime drama film Looking for Mr. Goodbar starring Diane Keaton, Tuesday Weld, William Atherton, Richard Kiley, Richard Gere, and Tom Berenger. The film focuses on Theresa (Keaton), a strict Catholic-raised teacher of deaf children. Needing excitement from her ordinary life, she prowls disco nightclubs looking for wild sex and random suitors. She soon meets a dangerous man who excites her and puts her life at risk.

"When I saw Mr. Goodbar, I got kind of fascinated with people who did go to clubs every night, whose life was kind of falling apart, but they lived for the night life, though it didn't seem to be advancing them as humans in the end, " explained Willis to SongFacts.

"So if you really look at the lyrics of 'Boogie Wonderland,' unlike 'September,' it's not a happy song at all. It's really about someone on the brink of self-destruction who goes to these clubs to try and find more, but is at least aware of the fact that if there's something like true love, that is something that could kind of drag them out of the abyss."

The Earth, Wind, & Fire song became a smash hit upon its release and landed at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also reached No. 14 on the Billboard dance chart and later earned gold certification. "Boogie Wonderland" received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Instrumental Performance and Best Disco Recording and won the Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.

Whoopi Goldberg is pushing back on the conservative criticism of Elliot Page's casting in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.

The View moderator had a blunt response to critics who have an issue with Page, a trans man, portraying the Greek soldier Sinon during the Tuesday, July 21, episode of the ABC talk show.

Pointing out that many of the people who have a problem with Page's casting condemned the film as a whole before it even premiered, Goldberg said, "A lot of conservatives who see this are going to feel the same way. That’s OK. But I don’t understand … why go see the movie?"

"If you don’t wanna see it, then don’t go see it," the EGOT winner continued. "Why do you care who’s cast in it? I don’t understand this idea that if we hate it, everybody must hate it."

She went on, “You don’t like Elliot Page? Don’t go see the damn movie. Don’t do it. We will be OK if you don’t go see it," adding that "movies are not real" and that she didn't understand why people "have to poop on everything [they] don't get."

Goldberg's The View conservative co-host, Alyssa Farrah Griffin, agreed with the take. “It is a masterpiece. It is a phenomenal film,” she said. “There’s actually a real conservative message … it’s about devotion to family, it’s about faith, it’s about upholding institutions, it’s about how war is dangerous and has repercussions for all of us."

"The fact that conservatives can’t take the win and just be like, ‘Oh no, this is a really excellent film with a good message for families,’ I’ll never understand that," she continued, at which point co-host Joy Behar chimed in, "They're stuck on woke."

"There’s nothing woke in this film," Griffin responded.

Nolan previously addressed pre-release criticism of his new epic, which also stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Lupita Nyong’o, in an interview with The Telegraph earlier this month, calling it "irrelevant" to him.

"But look, these conversations that happen before people see the film–they’re always irrelevant, because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet," the director told the outlet, adding, "All I can do is make the best film I possibly can in the most sincere way. It’s very different from how anyone else would do it, but that’s what adaptation is."

Do Eye-Tightening Creams Actually Work?

Yes, but with honest expectations about what "work" actually means. Dr. Kobets is clear that most eye-tightening creams don't physically lift or tighten loose skin the way surgery, lasers or radiofrequency treatments can.

What they do address are the multiple factors that make the eye area look aged in the first place. "They improve several factors that contribute to an aged appearance around the eyes, including dehydration, crepiness, skin discoloration, collagen loss, reduced elasticity, and puffiness," she explains.

Dr. Rowen adds a useful framework for understanding the category. There are essentially three types of products: moisturizing eye creams that hydrate and support the barrier; temporary tightening serums that create a film-forming effect lasting a few hours; and true anti-aging formulas that require months of consistent use but support real collagen remodeling over time. Knowing which type you're reaching for sets the right expectation for what you'll see and when.

Dr. Camp adds that you need to use a product for at least three months before deciding whether it's working, explaining, "Consistency is key when using skincare products to maintain skin health."

What Ingredients Should You Look for in an Eye-Tightening Cream?

The ingredient list separates a real tightening formula from a well-packaged moisturizer. Dr. Kobets recommends looking across two timelines. For immediate results, ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides and niacinamide attract water into the skin and reduce transepidermal water loss, making fine lines and crepiness look less noticeable within days.

For longer-term improvement, retinoids, peptides, growth factors and vitamin C support collagen production and skin remodeling—but require weeks to months of patience.

What's the Difference Between an Eye Cream and an Eye-Tightening Cream?

Dr. Kobets explains that an eye cream is a broad category focused on moisturizing and supporting the delicate skin around the eyes, while an eye-tightening cream is specifically marketed toward crepiness, laxity, fine lines and loss of elasticity. "In reality, there is often overlap between the two," she says.

Dr. Rowen draws the clearest functional distinction. Standard eye creams use hydrators like hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glycerin to soften skin and make fine lines less noticeable because the skin is plumper. Tightening serums add film-forming ingredients or active anti-aging compounds that go further—either creating a temporary contraction effect as they dry or supporting actual collagen synthesis over time.

How To Apply Eye-Tightening Cream Correctly

The technique matters more around the eyes than almost anywhere else on the face, because the skin here is some of the thinnest on the body and takes no prisoners when it comes to tugging or aggressive application.

On this day in 1986, Sarah Ferguson walked up the aisle of Westminster Abbey and exchanged her wedding vows with Queen Elizabeth II's second son Prince Andrew.

Neither Sarah, Andrew, the queen, the 2,000 assembled royals and celebrities in attendance, the cheering crowd of 100,000 people who gathered to watch the newlyweds kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, nor the 500 million television viewers worldwide who tuned in to watch the broadcast of the wedding, had any idea that 40 years later Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor would be disgraced by his friendship with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and stripped of his titles by his brother King Charles III.

But back in the day, the wedding was a huge deal and Fergie's wedding dress nothing short of iconic—and one of the most underrated wedding gowns in royal history.

The ivory duchesse satin dress by Lindka Cierach was a true encapsulation of 80s fashion. The heavy beading and silver embroidery on the corset! The puffed sleeves! The huge skirt! The 17 foot train topped by a giant bow!

The Mirror describes the $45,000 dress as "a testimony to 80s excess" that "reflected the mood of the time and was deemed a triumph."

The dress was so successful that within two hours of Sarah making her way up the steps of Westminster Abbey designers had already rushed to replicate the dress and were displaying them in shop windows.

The beadwork featured intricate symbols that Cierach wanted to reflect Sarah's "sense of fun", including hearts to represent romance; bumblebees and thistles from the Ferguson family's motif; and an anchor and waves to pay tribute to Andrew's love of sailing.

Two motifs suggested by Sarah are more curious however: a helicopter and teddy bears.

The helicopter was presumably intended to symbolize Andrew's career as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy, while the teddy bear may have been intended to reflect Andrew's love of stuffed animals—they reportedly had to be arranged in a very particular way on the former prince's bed.

In 2022 a former Buckingham Palace maid told the Sun, "It was so odd. After all, he was a grown man who had served in the Falklands. But he absolutely loved the ­teddies and was very clear about how he wanted them arranged."

The "bizarre" requests for these particular motifs to be incorporated into the bride's dress were ultimately rejected by the designer.

But the intertwined initials 'A' and 'F' were carefully stitched with silver beads into the train.

When Sarah entered the church she was wearing a veil and a headpiece of silk flowers. But once it was time for her to throw back her veil and walk down the aisle side by side with her new husband it turned out that she had planned a tiara reveal!

The headpiece was cast aside and in its place shone a diamond tiara that was commissioned by the queen and Prince Philip to be created for Sarah.

It's now known as the York tiara and Fergie was allowed to keep it after her divorce from Andrew in 1996.

She even stepped out in it a couple of times after her divorce. The most recent sighting of the York tiara is when Sarah and Andrew's daughterPrincess Beatrice wore it to the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa in Jordan in 2023.

The wedding reception breakfast was hosted by the queen at Buckingham Palace, and the evening was reception was held at Claridge's.

The rum and marzipan wedding cake was five and a half feet tall and was made by the navy supply school HMS Raleigh. 2,000 pieces of cake were cut from the towering tiered creation.

Andrew and Fergie honeymooned on the royal yacht Britannia in Portugal's Azores Islands.

They separated in 1991 and officially parted ways in 1996.

The ex husband and wife had moved back in together but were evicted by Charles earlier this year from Andrew's home of Royal Lodge, a 30 room mansion on the Greater Windsor estate.

Al Di Meola, the acclaimed guitarist who rose to fame in the 1970s with Return to Forever and later built a major solo career, turns 72 on Wednesday. 

Known for his fast guitar playing, complex compositions and mix of jazz, rock, Latin and world music, Di Meola remains an important name in modern guitar history.

Born Albert Laurence Di Meola on July 22, 1954, in Jersey City, New Jersey, the musician first picked up the guitar at age eight. Elvis Presley and The Ventures helped spark his interest, but hearing The Beatles had a bigger effect on his future.

"Listening to that album really changed my life", said Di Meola, recalling the family's copy of Meet the Beatles! that his older sister introduced to him.

That early interest grew into a serious musical career. As a teenager, Di Meola practiced for many hours each day. He later studied at Berklee College of Music and, at just 19, received the opportunity that would change his life: joining Chick Corea's pioneering jazz fusion group Return to Forever.

His time with the band lasted only about two years, but it helped make him a major guitar star of the 1970s. Di Meola played on three albums with the group, including No Mystery and Romantic Warrior. The band's recordings reached the U.S. Billboard Top 40, while "No Mystery" won a Grammy for Best Jazz Performance by a Group.

Di Meola's rise with Return to Forever also helped bring his powerful guitar style to a much wider audience. His playing was marked by speed, precision and strong rhythmic control. His now-iconic 1971 Gibson Les Paul Custom became closely linked with his sound during his early years with the group.

Al Di Meola's 1970s Guitar Career and Solo Success

When Return to Forever broke up around 1976, Di Meola quickly moved forward with his solo career. His first solo album, Land of the Midnight Sun, arrived in 1976 and featured musicians connected to his Return to Forever years, including Jaco Pastorius.

His next album, Elegant Gypsy, became one of the most important releases of his early career. Released in 1977, the album reached No. 5 on the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart and No. 58 on the Billboard 200. It later earned gold status.

The record also showed how Di Meola was moving beyond traditional jazz fusion. His music brought together electric guitar, Latin rhythms and Mediterranean influences, creating a sound that helped set him apart from other guitar players of his generation.

Di Meola's career expanded further through major collaborations. In 1980, he joined John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía for the live album Friday Night in San Francisco. The recording became a landmark in guitar music and went on to sell millions of copies worldwide.

The three guitarists later reunited for Passion, Grace & Fire, released in 1983, and again for The Guitar Trio in 1996.

While his early career was known for high-speed electric guitar playing, Di Meola gradually explored other sounds. During the 1980s and 1990s, he moved deeper into acoustic guitar, Brazilian music, flamenco, tango and other world music styles. His World Sinfonia projects became a major part of this period.

He also continued to record and perform with musicians from different musical backgrounds. His long list of collaborators includes Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Steve Winwood, Paul Simon, Jaco Pastorius, Jan Hammer, Bill Bruford, Steve Vai and others.

Di Meola's influence has continued long after his breakthrough in the 1970s. He has received numerous honors, including a Grammy Award, multiple Guitar Player magazine awards and a BBC Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award with his Return to Forever bandmates.

In 2008, Berklee College of Music awarded him an honorary doctorate.

He has also continued releasing music. His recent albums include Across the Universe, a 2020 collection built around Beatles interpretations, and Twentyfour, released in 2024.

In May 2026, Di Meola made headlines when he played Jerry Garcia's famous "Tiger" guitar during a performance at Park West in Chicago. The instrument had sold for $11.56 million at auction in March. Di Meola played the guitar during a show that included a duet with Josh Olken of Terrapin Flyer on "Uncle John's Band."

"I never got to meet Jerry Garcia, but I later heard he mentioned me as one of his favorite guitar players," wrote Di Meola on Instagram. "I couldn't believe it, honestly. When I was 15, my friends and I would skip school, take the bus into the city, and see the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore East."

He added: "Last night in Chicago, I had the chance to play Jerry's famous 'Tiger'. It was emotional in a way I didn't expect. And there it was… the Jerry tone."

Di Meola has also reflected on how his approach to music has changed over the years. In a recent interview with Guitarist, he spoke about the effect of smartphones and digital distractions on musicians.

"Back then, before cellphones and computers, we practised way more. And it was way more focused on the songs."

He also said that he now spends more time composing than chasing the extreme speed that became part of his early reputation.

"Velocity isn’t my number one desire. I’ve been devoting more time to composing."

At 72, Al Di Meola remains tied to the guitar legacy he helped shape in the 1970s while continuing to explore new ways to play, compose and perform.

Some true rock classics are underrated hits that music fans need to discover on their own. Supertramp's early epic, a 12-minute track called "Try Again," fits into this category.

The song was released on the rock band's self-titled debut album in 1970, one of 10 tracks. While it wasn't a single, it stood out on the record as the only song with a runtime longer than six minutes.

"Try Again" has a progressive rock vibe to the tune, with the lyrics telling the story of a love nearing its end and the struggle to make it work a little longer. One part of the song goes, "Maybe I'll go wrong, and it may not last long/ But in the night, all the light must be right for this moment."

The vocals are only a small part of the track, with most of "Try Again" being a long instrumental section in the middle. After the first group of vocals, the music goes soft, building up to an intense guitar and drum section in the middle. There's then another section of vocals, finishing with an outro that feels experimental and unexpected.

Despite being on Supertramp's debut album, "Try Again" shows the band's capabilities years before the big breakthrough with the third album, 1974's Crime of the Century. Unfortunately, it didn't reach too wide an audience when Supertramp came out in 1970. And even now, "Try Again" can be hard to find.

Supertramp's first album had an interesting original release. In different countries, it came out under different names, such as Now and Then in Spain. Even in the U.K., the band's home country, the first press was released with the album name labeled as And I'm Not Like Other. Supertramp also didn't come out in the U.S. until 1977.

While the British rock band performed many of the tracks on the debut album in 1970, some of the songs were never performed again. When Supertramp finally started gaining traction in 1974, almost all of the songs from Supertramp were dropped from any live performances.

Because of this, "Try Again" was never played at a live show after the year it came out. The album Supertramp is also very hard to find. But rock fans new and old have still discovered "Try Again" over the years and continue to praise the song as a masterpiece and underrated gem.
