Today anchor Craig Melvin is speaking out after he chased down an intruder who burst into the NBC studio and yelled a racial slur at him.

Melvin, 47, took to Instagram on Thursday evening to reflect on the incident that occurred at NBC's headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza earlier that morning. A man who was later identified by PEOPLE as Andrew Truelove made his way past security and approached Melvin, yelling a racial slur at him. Melvin quickly alerted security, and Truelove was arrested by the police, NBC News stated. In a photo-free post that was just text written on a black background, Melvin made it clear that he's doing well and will be back in his seat at the studio on Friday.

"Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I’m doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow," Melvin captioned the post, which also featured a statement from NBC News.

Al Roker Also Spoke Out

In the comments of Melvin's post, friends and fans were quick to offer their support to Melvin. That included Today weather anchor Al Roker, whom Truelove reportedly initially asked for when he burst into the studio, PEOPLE reported.

"Me, too!!!" Roker shared in the comments of Melvin's post.

What Did The Statement From NBC Say?

A prepared statement from NBC claimed there was no altercation between Truelove and Melvin.

"There was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio. An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured," the statement read. "TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff, and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios."

Get ready for the next generation of Mouseketeers. 

Disney+ is preparing to bring back the iconic children's television program, The Mickey Mouse Club. According to a Deadline article from July 16, the studio has ordered a pilot with plans for a reboot. 

The variety show first came out in 1955 and aired intermittently until 1996. It is responsible for launching celebrities such as BritneySpears, RyanGosling, JustinTimberlake, and Christina Aguilera into fame.

The reboot is ready for the next group of potential future stars. The pilot is set to star three Camp Rock 3 actors, HudsonStone, Casey Trotter, and BrooklynnPitts, as well as EriantheAkaata (Young Rock), Scarlett London Diviney (The Lion King), MichaelCash (BlackRabbit), Yonas Kibreab (Elio), Varonica Mitchell, Kauani, Scarlett Grace Petty, and Carter Barnes.

Disney stated that The Mickey Mouse Club will be a “showcase for today’s most talented young performers, where music, innovation, and self-expression take center stage,” per Deadlinereporting. 

Production on the pilot is expected to start July 2026 in Los Angeles. It will be produced by Fullwell Entertainment, the company behind The Kardashians. The executive producers include BenWinston (executive producer of The Late Late Show with James Corden and creative director of LA28), AshleyEdens (executive producer of Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney ), EmmaConway, and DavePiendak.

WaltDisney created The Mickey Mouse Club as a stage show in the 1920s. It made it to air in 1955 and ran on ABC until 1959. It was brought back in the 1970s as a syndicated series. The most well-known reboot was by the Disney Channel in 1989, which they called The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. It ran for eight seasons until 1996. Disney attempted a social media version of the program called Club Mickey Mouse from 2017 to 2018.

Anya Taylor-Joy has admitted she was relieved to hear James McAvoy had replaced an actor in Split, known for his intense methods.

The actress, who is currently promoting her new Apple TV+ show Lucky, reflected on M. Night Shyamalan’spsychological thriller to Hits Radio’s Olivia Marks. In an early role for the Emma star, she played a teenage girl kidnapped by a man struggling with dissociative identity disorder.

James McAvoy played the role of Kevin, for which he earned almost universal acclaim. But, Taylor-Joy revealed that he wasn't always the intended actor for the role.

“I was so grateful it was him, because originally it was supposed to be someone that’s very known for being a method actor,” she explained. “And if I had been in Philadelphia with a method actor whose intention was to eat me, I think that would have been a different experience.”

The Furiosa star also praised the Scottish Atonement actor for how mindful he was of the young women who were playing his victims, Taylor-Joy, Haley Lu Richardson and Jessica Sula.

“I was very grateful to have James, who I think also understood that he had three young women with him,” she told the popular celeb interviewer. “And so, every time after a take, he would just make it a little bit lighter and was very supportive and just a general great guy.”

Anya Taylor-Joy didn't name the method actor, but many presume she is referring to Joaquin Phoenix. The Oscar-winning actor pulled out of the psychological thriller project at the last minute, per Variety.

McAvoy spoke about replacing Phoenix in a 2024 episode of theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast, where he praised the Joker star as being “an amazing actor” but admitted he would have given "a very different performance to the one I did, but I think he’d give an incredible performance.”

“Sometimes coming in last minute is the best way,” he explained. “I think he ditched it two weeks before they started shooting. It was really last minute. I had a couple of weeks [to prep]. Two weeks. The script was well put together so a lot of it was clear what I wanted to do straight away," he recalled.

Joaquin Phoenix has become known for his intense on-set behavior which has involved shedding weight quickly, asking the cast and crew to call him by his character name and even wiring his mouth shut to create a speech impediment.

Rare Earth’s story is written with firsts and lasts. Not only was the band the first group Motown Records named an imprint after, but their first major original song also became their last Top 10 hit.

A joyous, feel-good anthem that would define their legacy, “I Just Want to Celebrate” was a massive reason for the band to, well, celebrate.

Formed in Detroit in 1960 under the name The Sunliners, the band—made up of Pete Rivera on drums and lead vocals, Gil Bridges on sax and flute, Rod Richards on guitar, John Persh on bass and trombone, Kenny James on keyboards, and later Ed Guzman on percussion—tweaked their sound, changed their name, and became a rock-and-soul band responsible for some of the era's greatest hits. 

Before “I Just Want to Celebrate,” the band saw commercial and critical success with covers of legendary songs including The Temptations’ “Get Ready” and “(I Know) I’m Losing You.” They’d put out three studio albums and one live album throughout the ’60s and early ’70s without really ever finding their audience. It wasn’t until One World that they struck gold. 

“Rare Earth became a popular touring act at that point, their jammy style often helping them steal the show as openers for much more established acts,” American Songwriter shared.

In 1969, as Motown, the legendary Black-owned soul label, was looking to expand beyond its soul roots and into rock radio, they signed Rare Earth, who were looking for their own signature song. After finding success with a string of covers, the band got their hands on “I Just Want to Celebrate,” an optimistic track written by songwriting duo Dino Fekaris and Nick Zesses specifically for the rockers. 

“Rare Earth, known for epically wild jams that transformed well-known hit songs,” American Songwriter wrote. “In 1971, the Detroit-based band enjoyed their biggest hit with a song written just for them. That song, ‘I Just Want to Celebrate,’ still stands tall thanks to its thrilling instrumental flourishes and unvarnished positivity.”

The track was a massive hit. Released in June of 1971, it spent the summer climbing the ranks on Billboard’s Hot 100, peaking at No. 7 that September. A groundbreaking genre-blending track, the hit was released as the lead single from their One World album. 

In the decades since, the song has enjoyed an extraordinary second life through licensing, appearing in films including Three Kings, A Knight’s Tale, and The Nice Guys, and television shows like Six Feet Under, The Simpsons, and Smoke, as well as commercials, and sporting events. 

More than five decades later, “I Just Want to Celebrate” remains one of rock’s most enduring celebrations of resilience and the simple joy of being alive.

Atlanta Rhythm Section developed a sexually charged soft rock track titled "Imaginary Lover" that was a hit among listeners, but it was due to a misconception about the singer.

The Southern rock band was diving into the yacht rock genre when they released the track and their greatest hit. "Imaginary Lover" was released as part of their Champagne Jam album and entered the charts at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also did well on the Adult Contemporary chart at No. 20.

Written by Perry Carlton "Buddy" Buie, Dean Daughtry, and Robert Nix, the band has always kept its lips sealed about what inspired the track. Fans can either take its lyrics literally or figuratively about an imaginary lover. The track gives off the message of "private pleasure" that guarantees satisfaction in the absence of a partner. Buie was once asked if "Imaginary Lover" was in fact about masturbation, to which he replied, "Yes!"

While the song's lyrics are something to talk about, the backstory to how it got popular among fans is arguably more interesting. "Imaginary Lover" received unusual publicity when a DJ jockie accidentally played the track at 45 rpm instead of its normal 33.

To everyone's surprise, they had no idea the track was by Atlanta Rhythm Section due to Ronnie Hammond's vocals sounding almost exactly like Stevie Nicks' from Fleetwood Mac. Many even called the track the "lost" Fleetwood Mac track, with listeners calling into the radio station requesting to play "Imaginary Lover."

The popularity surrounding the track even reached Nicks herself. According to Rolling Stone, she rushed out to buy the record and played it at the wrong speed to see if it was true. At the time, Fleetwood Mac was in between albums and creating new song demos for Tusk.

“I got chills,” says Nicks. “It sounds exactly like something I’d sing, the way I’d sing it. I even played it for Christine [McVie], mixed in with some other demos for the new album. She complimented me on it.”

According to reports, engineer Hernán Rojas would later learn that Atlanta Rhythm Section were the real singers. He wasn't amused by what Nicks had done and claimed that he "didn't find it as funny as we did.

Having formed in 1970, the band gained the most success with their Champagne Jam album and "Imaginary Lover." The album also led off with "Large Time", a tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and their No. 14 hit on the charts, "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight."

Fifty-one years ago, legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac released "Say You Love Me"—a track that resurfaced two decades after it dropped and remains staple of the genre.

"Say You Love Me" was originally released on July 11, 1975 as a track from Fleetwood Mac's beloved self titled record—which is often referred to as The White Album. Following the record's major success, listener demand for the track surged, prompting the band to issue it as a single in June 1976. From there, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100, spending 19 weeks on the chart. In September, it peaking at No. 11—becoming the highest-charting single from the album at the time.

Written entirely by keyboardist and vocalist Christine McVie, "Say You Love Me" explores the emotional complexity that comes with getting caught up in a casual relationship with a partner who strings you along. McVie highlights themes of romantic manipulation and casual love through vulnerable, pleading lyrics that deeply resonated with audiences.

"Say You Love Me" is recognizable for its upbeat, folk-rock sound, a twist from its contrasting lyrical message. Its earworm melody paired with McVie's powerful vocals made for an undeniably addicting song that caught the attention of any soft rock fan. Today, the track is just as popular, with a live album that hoisted it back into the public eye.

The Dance Revival

In 1987, guitarist and vocalist Lindsey Buckingham departed from the group, prompting the breakup of the iconic Rumours-era lineup. The separation followed a series of tumultuous falling-outs among the band due to relationship troubles.

Ten years later, the beloved lineup, consisting of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, reunited for a live concert album titled The Dance. The record was a massive phenomenon, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 LP chart due to how highly anticipated it was.

The Dance went on to be certified 5× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), moving over 6 million copies worldwide and becoming the fifth best-selling live album in U.S. history. Its unparalleled mainstream attention reignited public fascination with multiple '70s hits, "Say You Love Me" being one of them.

The single was reimagined during the live performance, stripping away its electric guitar in favor of a driving acoustic banjo. The new acoustics transformed the track into a spectacular folk-rock jam that is still beloved by fans today.

Over five decades since its initial release, "Say You Love Me" remains one of Fleetwood Mac's most impactful songs. The track continues to endure among new generations of listeners. On Spotify alone, it has accumulated over 214 million streams, cementing its lasting status as a timeless rock staple.

While not everyone enjoys the genre, horror books, with their disturbing descriptions and metaphors for actual atrocities, tend to have a pretty big impact on readers' imaginations. Collider recently showcased a few popular horror novels published after 2006, with a ranking of "the 8 best horror books of the last 20 years." The list featured terrifying books like Joe Hill's NOS4A2 published in 2013, 2014's Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, and The Strain, co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, from 2009.

The publication put Junji Ito's complete manga series, Uzumaki (1998-1999), at the top of the list. According to Collider, the three-volume manga series offers readers a ghastly experience wherein Kurouzu-cho residents are subjected to mental deterioration and bodily transformations thanks to a curse.

Junji Ito Spoke About What Influenced His Career as an Author of Horror Manga in a 2025 Interview

In a 2025 interview promoting his collaboration with the clothing company BlackMilk, Ito explained that he was inspired to be an author and illustrator of horror manga after reading Kazuo Umezu and Shinichi Koga's books "when [he] was a child."

"After that, I continued to draw for fun using only paper and pencil, but when I was in high school, I met a friend who was drawing full-fledged manga using a pen and ink, and I imitated him and started drawing with a pen and ink. However, I could hardly finish it properly," said Ito.

He clarified that his manga series, which also includes Shiver (2015) and The Liminal Zone (2022), don't have a "specific source of inspiration."

"If I had to pick one, I would say that the human body inspires me the most. The human body, with its complex mind, is the motif that interests me the most," continued Ito during the 2025 interview.

He also pointed to a moment from Uzumaki as one of his favorite illustrations from all of his projects.

“I like the picture in Uzumaki where the face of a girl named Azami is invaded by a vortex, and the picture in The Human Chair (original story by Ranpo Edogawa) where the contents of a chair are revealed," said Ito.

And now, nearly 30 years after its official release, the futuristic film is returning to theaters for a brief stint later this month.

After you turn 21 and enter your early 20s, it can be intimidating to order something other than what you’re used to or something fruity that you know you already like. At least that’s how I felt when it came to diving into cocktails like gin and tonic, rum and Coke or the espresso martini. But boy, when I did take that leap with an espresso martini, I was all in. 

It’s definitely a drink that I reserve for when I really do need a caffeine pick-me-up, so an early brunch or maybe the first drink of the night. But I do really like the deep, rich taste of it. And that energy boost really helps without going crazy and getting a cocktail with Red Bull (to each their own, but that energy drink is just too much for me). 

That’s why, when I was offered the chance to tryYOSHI Matcha Liqueur, I jumped on it. I like matcha a lot and used to make my own matcha lattes at home. There are also periods of time when I’ll be on a matcha kick and order one every time I go to a coffee shop. The thought of creating something akin to an espresso martini but with something that has a more neutral taste and isn’t as bitter—instead, it has an almost refreshing taste—was too good to pass up. 

While matcha martini recipes have existed for years already, this new liqueur makes it easier to create a matcha cocktail without having to buy and whisk your own ceremonial-grade matcha. So, I gave it a try, and I’m reporting my opinion and findings below, along with my YOSHI Matcha Liqueur review. Find out how to make a matcha martini, what it tastes like, if it’s worth it and more. Why the Matcha Martini Is Challenging the Espresso Martini

When it comes to classy cocktails that have some sort of caffeine agent in them, the espresso martini comes to mind first. It’s reigned supreme in this category for decades, at least. But for many, it can be more of an acquired taste and is definitely fit for people who really love the taste of bitter espresso. 

That’s where the matcha martini comes in. It still has that caffeine aspect, but it doesn’t have that same bitter taste. Even though you still get the taste of whatever alcohol you pair with it, that earthy, bright taste of matcha peeks through in a different way than the espresso does in an espresso martini.

What Does a Matcha Martini Taste Like?

When I took my first sip after using the YOSHI Matcha Liqueur, I was surprised at how light and sweet it was. Granted, that’s because of the simple syrup in the matcha martini and the sweet cream cold foam on top. If you made your own cold foam or used one that wasn’t as sweet, there might be better balance. 

But the sweet flavor was then met with the very strong vodka taste, and that basically took over. While I did taste a bit of matcha on that first sip, the aftertaste and sips following really just tasted like sweet, creamy vodka. I'm not complaining, though; I can see myself consistently sipping on a drink like this. While I was missing the matcha flavor that I expected, it went down a little smoother than espresso martinis to (for me), and I want to perfect this cocktail in the future, maybe by using my own matcha powder and adding more of that in there.

I also tasted the YOSHI Matcha Liqueur by itself to understand the taste, and it was a very different experience. 

To really get a feel for this new and first-of-its-kind cordial, I took some slow sips from a shot of this stuff, and it was really creamy, and the matcha flavor really came through here. It does essentially taste like a matcha latte with a strong alcohol added in. The latter reminded me a lot of vodka—in smell and taste—so I would be interested to know if another alcohol with it, like gin or tequila, would bring out the matcha flavor more in the martini. And maybe I'll double-up the proportions of the matcha liqueur in the recipe too, so that I have more of that taste rather than straight vodka.

On its own, it’s not super sweet—though it does have a sweetness to it that adds to the creamy texture. It has the consistency and color of a slightly thickened green juice (kind of like a thinner, smoother Naked Juice), so it’s pleasant to look at and serve as well.

Ingredients for the Perfect Matcha Green Tea Martini

• 2 oz YOSHI Matcha Liqueur
• 1 oz vodka (or tequila or gin)
• 0.5 oz simple syrup
• Matcha to dust on top
• Cold foam on top (I frothed my favorite creamer, Silk’s Sweet & Creamy Almond Creamer)

While there are other ways to make this martini without the matcha liqueur, this is the easiest way and the way I made mine.

Step-by-Step: How To Make a Matcha Martini

Because you don’t need to use actual matcha, making this martini is a lot faster than a regular matcha martini recipe. The YOSHI Matcha Liqueur already does the sifting and whisking for you, so you just have to shake and pour it. It also doesn’t clump when it hits cold liquid, such as in the shaker full of ice.

Items you’ll need:

• A shaker
• A way to measure out 0.5-2 oz of liquid
• A foaming/frothing wand
• A jug to foam your creamer in
• A martini glass (I didn’t have one, so I just used something good for a small cocktail)

1. Put ice in your shaker.
2. Pour in the YOSHI Matcha Liqueur, vodka and simple syrup in the shaker, and shake until it’s frothy and well-mixed. I would say about five minutes or so of shaking.

1. Pour it into your glass. Double-strain it if it’s not smooth enough for your liking.
2. Pour a bit of your creamer into your jug. Use your foaming wand to create a cold foam; keep the wand closer to the bottom of the jug, slightly tilted to the side, so you make thick foam and not bubbly foam (I need more practice, because I did accidentally make too big of bubbles. This doesn't impact taste, just the aesthetic).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)Can you mix matcha and alcohol? 

Yes, but if you use the YOSHI Matcha Liqueur, you don’t have to create the mix yourself. It’s the first premium spirit to blend ceremonial-grade matcha with an oat milk base. It also has a low ABV (17%) for a liqueur, meaning it makes for a good mixer.

What alcohol pairs best with matcha? 

Vodka is the standard alcohol to pair with matcha, and that goes for pairing with YOSHI too. But you can also pair it with gin and tequila, even with mezcal too.

Does a matcha martini have caffeine? 

Yes, because YOSHI is made with ceremonial-grade matcha, there’s about 5 grams of matcha per bottle and therefore it has the caffeine that naturally comes with the matcha powder. This is why we compared it to an espresso martini up top because it has a similar energy-boosting aspect to it. Though it’s nothing crazy.

Final Thoughts

YOSHI’s matcha liqueur is a new product that takes most of the work out of creating an alcoholic matcha-based beverage. While I don’t think the taste is for everyone, neither is matcha. So if you’re someone who likes ground-up green tea leaf powder, then this might be worth a shot for you. 

Overall, if you’re someone who loves matcha and sweet matcha lattes—basically, you know what to expect in regards to taste—and you’re looking for a similar cocktail to an espresso martini, then a matcha martini with the YOSHI Matcha Liqueur is going to be right up your alley.

Sublime is giving fans even more to look forward to on its 2026 tour.

The iconic ska-punk band has announced that The Ataris and Bedouin Soundclash will join its Aug. 22 concert at the Constellation Brands–Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) in Canandaigua, New York, expanding the lineup for one of the band's marquee summer shows.

The newly added support acts bring together three bands whose careers have helped shape alternative rock, ska and pop-punk over the past three decades.

The Ataris broke through in the early 2000s with songs like "In This Diary" and their platinum-selling cover of "The Boys of Summer," while Canadian favorites Bedouin Soundclash have built a devoted following through their signature blend of reggae, rock and ska, highlighted by hits such as "When the Night Feels My Song."

The Canandaigua performance is one stop on a busy year for Sublime, which has returned to the stage with Jakob Nowell, the son of original frontman Bradley Nowell, sharing vocal duties alongside founding members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh.

"This has so many layers for me," Jakob said of stepping into his father's shoes. "On a spiritual level, my father passed away when he was 28, and I am 28 now. It's an honor to carry on with our family's name and legacy with Sublime."

The group has also been celebrating the release of Until the Sun Explodes, its first new studio album in three decades. Rather than attempting to recreate the past, the current lineup has embraced the band's legacy while introducing a new chapter for longtime fans and a younger generation discovering Sublime for the first time.

"The last Sublime record that will ever be made is [1996 's Sublime]," Jakob toldBlabbermouth. "There's no replacing history, period. Until The Sun Explodes the album is an epilogue, and 'Until The Sun Explodes', the single, is the epilogue to the epilogue. It is a tribute to the expansive works of Sublime, it is an acknowledgment for all that my father has done for me my entire life, and most importantly it is a thank you. I love you dad, and I owe you my life."

Originally formed in 1988, Sublime became one of alternative rock's defining acts during the 1990s with a distinctive mix of punk, ska, reggae, hip-hop and surf rock. Although Bradley Nowell's death in 1996 brought the band's original run to an abrupt end, songs like "Santeria," "What I Got," "Wrong Way" and "Doin' Time” have continued to attract millions of listeners around the world.

The addition of The Ataris and Bedouin Soundclash adds even more nostalgia to the Canandaigua stop, bringing together artists whose music helped define different eras of alternative rock.

As Sublime continues its 2026 tour, the expanded lineup promises one of the summer's strongest bills for fans of alternative music. Decades after helping shape the sound of the 1990s, the beloved band continues to evolve while celebrating the music that made it a lasting cultural force.

Most love songs celebrate falling in love or losing it. Anne Murray's 1978 hit "You Needed Me" did something different. Instead of celebrating the thrill of falling in love, it explored what love can do after two people find each other.

The Song's Origins

"You Needed Me" was written by Nashville songwriter Randy Goodrum, who said he wrote it about 7-8 years before Murray picked it up.

Murray explained she originally passed on the song, but when it came around for a second listen, she instantly fell for it. "I pulled it out and played it," she recalled, "and had to sit down when I played it. I went, 'Oh my goodness, this is fabulous!' How could I have so casually put that aside?"

She immediately made a call and got the song put on hold. "It touched me so much," she said. Murray's excitement and belief in the song held steady from there on out.

"We went into the studio and recorded 'You Needed Me,' and I'll tell you a person, there's was such excitement in the air," she remembered. "Now I know that's a very low-key kind of a ballad, but there was magic that happened in that studio. In that control room, everyone looked at each other and went 'Wow.' We just knew, knew it was a hit."

What Made 'You Needed Me' Different

Unlike many love songs, "You Needed Me" is rooted in gratitude rather than longing. The narrator isn't simply saying "I love you." She's thanking her partner for believing in her, restoring her confidence, and helping her rediscover herself.

Goodrum talked to Songfacts about writing the love song's unconventional take. "It was sort of an unconditional undeserved love. How could you love me as if I'm perfect, when I'm not?" he explained. "It was a disclaimer, sort of, for the other person. How could you need me?"

"You gave me strength, To stand alone again, To face the world, Out on my own again," the song's lyrics go. Rather than idealizing romance itself, the song celebrates love as something that encourages, restores, and ultimately helps both people grow.

Murray recalled some confusion around the song's meaning and said, "A few people suggested to me that it should be 'I needed you' ... if you just changed the words to "I needed you" ... And I went, 'What do you mean?' No one's ever said it this way, 'You needed me.' Thats' the whole point of this song."

Although some of the executives at her label didn't immediately understand or connect with the song's perspective, Murray begged them to put it out as a single. "That song was brought home by women," she said, explaining that women seemed to understood this different kind of love song right away.

Anne Murray's Career-Defining Hit

"You Needed Me" was released in May 1978, as part of her album Let's Keep It That Way. Murray hadn't had a Top 40 single since her 1974 remake of The Beatles' "You Won't See Me." That changed in July 1978 when the song became her first No. 1 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In major crossover success, the song also became a top-five Country single.

The track won both "Song of the Year" at the Academy of Country Music awards and the Grammy Award for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance." The single was certified Gold in the U.S.

Why 'You Needed Me' Still Resonates

Almost five decades later, the song still connect with fans, old and new. Unlike the many songs that celebrate the excitement of new romance or the pain of heartbreak, "You Needed Me" lingers in a quieter emotional space. It's about what happens after trust is built — the confidence one partner gives another, the comfort of knowing someone believes in you, and the unexpected realization that being needed, just the way you are, can be as important as being loved.

Its Lasting Legacy

"You Needed Me" gets continued radio play and has more than 105 million Spotify streams. Classic Rock History ranks it No. 1 in their "Top 10 Anne Murray Songs" list and Ranker fans voted it among "The Best Country Songs From the 70s."

Nearly 50 years later, "You Needed Me" still reminds listeners that love isn't only about finding the right person — it's also about helping each other become the people we're capable of being. That's a message that feels just as meaningful today as it did when Anne Murray released it in 1978.

It's safe to say this is Ella Langley's year, as her hit single "Choosin' Texas" is proving to be quite unstoppable.

After setting many Billboard Chart records following its Oct. 17, 2025, release as the lead single from her second studio album Dandelion, the song has hit another career milestone.

"Choosin' Texas" was the most-streamed song (by on-demand audio streams), according to data tracking company Luminate. For the first half of 2026, the track brought in 570.9 million streams.

According to Billboard, total on-demand audio streams at midyear increased by 4.8% in the U.S. compared to last year.

Langley also beat out Bad Bunny's DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS for 2026’s Midyear Top 10 Albums in U.S. (by Equivalent Album Units), as Dandelion took the No. 2 spot with 1.638 million, bested only by Morgan Wallen'sI’m the Problem, which took the No. 1 spot with 2.035 million.

The Alabama native is rewriting the history books, as Parade previously reported, she’s become one of only five songs by women without male-billed acts to spend at least 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The tune is also the first non-holiday song to hit the milestone since Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” 21 years ago. 

And if you haven't been keeping up, she's also dominating the chart with three songs occupying spots in the top four, with “Choosin’ Texas” at the top, alongside “Be Her” and the Wallen collaboration, “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” putting her in an elite group to command multiple spots of the all-genre chart.

The upbeat heartbreak ballad also spent 11 weeks at the top of iTunes. And in June, it took the coveted spot of being the most-played song on TouchTunes, the popular digital jukebox platform, for the first six months of the year.

As for who is responsible for the megahit that is "Choosin' Texas," it was co-written by Langley, Luke Dick, country hitmaker MirandaLambert and Joybeth Taylor.

The country anthem captures the irresistible pull of the Lone Star State as the “other woman,” blending a tribute to Texas culture with the carefree spirit the state represents.

To get started, you’ll need just a handful of ingredients for this two-part recipe. For the crust, set aside 2 sticks of room-temperature butter, 2 cups of all-purpose flour and half a cup of confectioners' sugar. For the filling, you’ll need 4 large eggs, 5 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of grated lemon zest, 2 cups of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder and half a teaspoon of salt.

You’ll also need a 9-by-13-inch baking pan, a mixing bowl and an electric mixer to help bring everything together.

How to Make Trisha Yearwood’s Lemon Squares

Start by preheating the oven to 350°F and spraying your 9-by-13-inch baking pan with cooking spray before setting it aside.

For the crust, melt two sticks of butter in a medium saucepan over low heat, then combine flour and confectioners’ sugar in a mixing bowl. Once the butter is melted, add it to the dry ingredients and mix everything together until a dough forms. From there, simply press the dough firmly into your greased pan until the entire surface is covered, then toss it in the oven and bake for 25 minutes.

While the crust bakes, use an electric mixer to combine the eggs, lemon juice and zest until nice and smooth. Then, add in the granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt, and mix until it's smooth again.

Once the crust is out of the oven after 25 minutes, pour in the freshly mixed lemon filling and return the pan to the oven to bake for an additional 20 minutes.

Once ready, remove the pan from the oven again and let the dish cool completely, allowing for at least 30 minutes before serving. Finish it off with a dusting of confectioners’ sugar, cut into squares and serve warm.

What I Thought of Trisha Yearwood’s Lemon Squares

As someone who generally steers clear of overly lemon-flavored things, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the incredible combination of flavors this simple list of ingredients produces. And even though the filling is primarily made up of sugar and lemon, the finished product tastes undeniably rich and complex, with bright, citrusy notes and a satisfyingly buttery, crumbly crust.

I can see myself making this recipe for just about any summer occasion, whether it's whipping up a tray to share with friends and family at a cookout, keeping a batch on hand to enjoy throughout the week or bringing it along as a creative dessert for a summer potluck. And with an overall prep and cook time of roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes (with breaks in between), I also found the recipe to be fairly easy to recreate and rewarding to make during a relaxing afternoon.

Tips for Making Trisha Yearwood’s Lemon Squares

If you're going to make Trisha Yearwood's lemon squares yourself, these are the tips to keep in mind before you start.

1. Stay strict with bake times.

Because this recipe bakes fairly quickly, you’ll want to keep a keen eye on your timer to ensure both the crust and the filling do not overbake. That said, you can expect the crust to come out fairly browned after the first 25 minutes, but if you leave the tray in the oven longer than the additional 20 minutes needed to bake the filling, you’ll end up with a top layer that looks reminiscent of crème brûlée, only overly cooked and likely burnt underneath.

2. Get creative with the crust.

While the instructions say to simply press the crust dough down into the bottom of the pan, I found that if you form a bit of a side wall with the dough around the perimeter, you end up with a satisfying deep-dish-style crust that gives each square a little extra texture to enjoy.

3. Let them cool completely before cutting.

It might be tempting to slice into these lemon squares as soon as they come out of the oven, but allowing them to cool completely will give the filling time to set and make it much easier to cut clean, even squares. You can even let them cool overnight in the refrigerator to be enjoyed in the morning. 

4. Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor.

While you may want to use bottled lemon juice as a shortcut, using fresh lemons for both the juice and zest will give your lemon squares a much brighter citrus flavor and help balance the sweetness of the filling. More importantly, that fresh flavor will only enhance the final bite, making the little extra effort all the more worthwhile.
