Inspired by rival gangs at her high school in Tulsa, Okla., American author S.E. Hintonbegan writingThe Outsiders at just 15 years old. She wrote the story primarily as a way to understand the gangs by writing from their point of view. Hinton would write the bulk of the novel and complete it while she was 16 years old, eventually publishing it on April 24, 1967, at the age of 18.

Hinton, whose full name is Susan Eloise Hinton, published the novel under her initials at the advice of her publisher so that reviewers would not be deterred from picking up the book if they knew it was by a female author. Hinton kept the partial pseudonym for her later works as it allowed her to better differentiate between her public and personal personas.

The Outsiders sold more than 15 million copies worldwide in its first 50 years of publication and was translated into more than 30 languages. The novel is put on many middle and high school reading curricula.

Many novels prove to be influential, and the story by Hinton is exactly that. In 2019, the BBC compiled a list of the "100 Most Influential Books of All Time" and placed The Outsiders among them. In 1988, Hinton was awarded the inaugural Margaret Edwards Award from the American Library Association for her cumulative contribution in writing for teens, largely in part due to the influence of The Outsiders.

The Outsiders follows 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis, who believes there are simply two types of people in the world: Greasers and Socs. Greasers are poor East Side kids like Ponyboy and his friends and family. Socs are the rich West Side kids with whom they constantly clash. When Ponyboy's best friend Johnny fatally stabs a Soc one night, Ponyboy is confronted with the reality of the world in a way he never considered and is faced with the truth of humanity.

The Outsiders remains immensely popular and moving for readers to this day, encouraging them to "stay gold." It is available wherever books are sold.

It’s hard to even consider what was going on in everyone’s minds when they thought it would be a good idea for Jimi Hendrix to open for the clean-cut pop group The Monkees, but it happened in 1967.

That was until the day Hendrix walked away from the tour and never looked back. That happened on July 17, 1967, after just eight shows.

It still goes down in history as one of the most bizarre music pairings to ever happen. Hendrix was known for his legendary guitar solos, while the band formed initially for TV was a bubble gum pop group that was thought would rival The Beatles. Both had their fan bases, but anyone going to see The Monkees in concert were unlikely to enjoy Hendrix’s music.

Who possibly thought it up? Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork of The Monkees! After watching Hendrix perform at the Monterey Pop Festival earlier that year (and Dolenz has seen him the year before), they knew they needed to have him on their tour. The idea was that it would expose the newly-formed band to the American audience, exposing them to more fans. Plus, Dolenz said in a 2021 interview, “His claim to fame was he’s the guy who plays guitar with his teeth,” and that definitely helped seal the idea that he would be perfect.

Hendrix agreed to do it, and he certainly tried. For eight shows, he put up with the screaming fans who would drown out his solos with “We want Davy,” noting the adoration and love for Davy Jones. After the eighth show, he had had enough.

The good news is that the band and Hendrix became friends after this. While the on-stage nightmare was always going to be there, it didn’t create a rift between them, and it seems they were able to laugh about it in the future.

In fact, the decision to part ways on the stage was mutual. Hendrix confirmed, “Then some parents who brought their young kids complained that our act was vulgar. We decided it was just the wrong audience. I think they’re replacing me with Mickey Mouse.”

The two would go their separate ways and find their own fame. It was simply a case of what seemed like a fun idea at the time being something made of nightmares, but everyone respected the business.

Over 50 years after putting out some of their biggest hits, America is back on the Billboard charts again.

The '70s soft rock band ended up back on the Billboard leaderboards this week with their 1975 compilation album, History: America's Greatest Hits, which re-entered the Billboard 200 at No. 180, according to new standings dated the week of July 18.

The album has now spent a total of 68 weeks on the Billboard 200, previously peaking at No. 3 just one month after its release in November 1975.

It contains the most iconic tracks from America's discography, including their smash hit debut single, "A Horse with No Name," which spent three weeks on the Hot 100 in 1972.

The group's signature track, "A Horse with No Name" has since surpassed one billion streams on Spotify, earning it a spot in the platform's elite "Billion's Club."

The Greatest Hits record also features America's only other Hot 100 chart-topper, "Sister Golden Hair," which came out as a single in 1975 and was later featured on their fifth studio album, Hearts.

Other fan-favorite tracks also appear on the Greatest Hits compilation record, like "Ventura Highway," "Tin Man," "You Can Do Magic" and more.

In 1986, the album was officially certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), signifying one million units sold.

The album's resurgence comes more than five decades after America arrived on the music scene in the '70s, a testament to the lasting legacy of the band's beloved catalog.

Stress is a very real issue that most of us deal with daily, some more than others. We’re often trying to find ways to reduce the amount of pressure we’re under or find ways to handle it better. But health psychologist Kelly McGonigal has given presentations and written books about ways to think about stress differently. Her 2013 TED Talk, “How to make stress your friend,” is one of the most-viewed on their platform with over 36.4 million views. In it, she makes the case that there are ways to turn this pressure into a positive thing. And our quote of the day focuses on that idea of reframing stress.

According to TEDTalk, McGonigal is a “leader” in the “science-help” space. She “translates academic research into practical strategies for health, happiness and personal success.” She is a psychologist in both “the worlds of research and practice,” and holds positions in the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the School of Medicine, they also reported.

As she wrote on her website, her two most popular books first started out as psychology courses she was teaching at Stanford University. For example, The Willpower of Instinct was originally a course called “The Science of Willpower,” and her most recent book, Joy Is a Risk Worth Taking, was an online course called “The Science and Practice of Joy.” 

On top of all that, she shared that she was the psychology consultant for The New York Times Education Initiative, and interviewed professionals like scientists and authors for Public Radio’s City Arts & Lectures. She’s also worked to develop “programs for schools that integrate psychological science into student wellness and support.”

This quote is from McGonigal’s 2012 book, The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It. The book’s description calls it a “controversial and groundbreaking new book that overturns long-held beliefs about stress.” It mentions that almost half of Americans lose sleep over stress, and are often trying to reduce the amount of stress they’re experiencing. Deeper Meaning of Kelly McGonigal’s Quote—Reframing Stress

Whether you can fully reframe the way you think about stress or not, McGonigal’s initial statement is true. If you feel an intense emotion about a situation, then you care about it in some regard.

Because of that, stress shouldn’t be something you should be avoidant of or “run away” from, as McGonigal puts it. She states that you should embrace it and “step forward” to address the pressure you’re feeling. As with many things we care about, it’s good to face things head-on to either figure out a remedy or at least why you’re feeling stress and anxiety and not another emotion.

Stepping to the plate when it comes to something that’s stressing you out is one way to start addressing that emotion, whether that’s finding a way to make stress your friend or finding ways to alleviate it.

It's hard to imagine anyone other than Ed O'Neill playing the sarcastic shoe salesman Al Bundy on Married…with Children.

But according to David Faustino, the actor who portrayed Bud Bundy for the sitcom's entire run, the role almost went to someone else.

During an appearance on the Pod Meets Worldpodcast, Faustino, 52, revealed that Fox executives weren't initially sold on casting the relatively unknown O'Neill, 80, as the patriarch of television's most dysfunctional family.

"They didn't want him, like, at all," Faustino recalled.

He said then-Fox executive Barry Diller opposed casting O'Neill, believing the role should go to a bigger name.

According to Faustino, the disagreement even affected the show's production schedule.

"They lost six episodes because of it," he said, explaining that the fight over casting delayed the series before O'Neill was ultimately chosen.

The decision would go on to become one of the defining casting choices in television history.

Premiering in 1987, Married…with Children ran for 11 seasons and more than 250 episodes, helping establish the Fox network while turning O'Neill into a household name.

His portrayal of Al Bundy, a perpetually frustrated shoe salesman who longed for his high school football glory days, became one of the most recognizable sitcom characters of the era.

O'Neill later went on to star as Jay Pritchett on ABC's Modern Family, earning three Emmy nominations and introducing himself to an entirely new generation of television fans.

Here's to an endless summer...

The season technically concludes later in September, but a brand-new music festival was just announced to descend on Southern California before October hits.

On Thursday, July 16, Goldenvoice announced Ocean Way Festival to take place September 26-27 on the beach in Santa Monica. It boasts a celebration of music, food, wellness, design, sustainability and beach culture.

Fans have since flooded the post's comments section to express their excitement for the inaugural event. "COMIN OUT OF MY CAGE," wrote one Instagram user, a clear nod to The Killers' anthem "Mr. Brightside," while another person commented, "can’t wait to dance by the water with you all 🌊🌊."

The festival takes its name from Ocean Way, the Santa Monica street where Allen Sides founded what would become Ocean Way Recording studios more than four decades ago.

“Santa Monica is in the middle of a renaissance," said Mayor Caroline Torosis in a statement. "The city is welcoming the world to its shores, and Ocean Way Festival is how we're making sure our own community is at the center of it."

Ocean Way is reportedly designed from the ground up as a sustainable, transit-first festival experience. There will be no on-site parking by design, as LA Metro's E Line terminates steps from the festival entrance, Big Blue Bus and shuttle service are available, and bike valet and micro-mobility options are built into the experience.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, July 23 at 11 a.m. PT here, with a Santa Monica residents presale beginning Wednesday, July 22 at 11 a.m. PT.

This new version is sports-specific, however, as a partnership between The New York Times and The Athletic.

As the NYT site instructs, for Connections Sports Edition, you "group sports terms that share a common thread."

Before Johnny Cash became a global music icon known as the Man in Black, he was one of the defining artists of Sun Records, the legendary label that helped launch the careers of some of rock and country music's biggest names.

On July 17, 1958, Cash returned to Sun Records for what would become his final recording session with the label, recording two songs that marked the end of an important chapter in his career: "Down the Street to 301" and "I Forgot to Remember to Forget."

At the time, Cash was already one of Sun Records' biggest stars. His breakthrough hits, including "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Cry! Cry! Cry!", had helped establish him as a distinctive voice in country music, blending traditional sounds with the energy of early rockabilly.

But by 1958, Cash's relationship with Sun Records was nearing its end. Later that year, he would leave the label and sign with Columbia Records, beginning another major era of his career that would include some of his most iconic recordings.

His final Sun session represented a turning point between two stages of Cash's musical journey.

"I Forgot to Remember to Forget" was especially notable because it had originally been a hit for another Sun Records legend, Elvis Presley, in 1955. Cash's recording offered his own interpretation of the song, adding another connection between two of the label's most influential artists.

While these final Sun recordings did not become among Cash's biggest commercial hits, they remain an important piece of his history. They captured the singer during a pivotal moment just before he transitioned from a rising rockabilly performer into one of the most respected and enduring artists in music.

Cash's move to Columbia Records would allow him to expand his sound and explore deeper storytelling themes, eventually leading to classics like "Ring of Fire," "I Still Miss Someone" and his legendary live albums recorded at Folsom Prison and San Quentin.

Watching the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin was truly magical. Not only was the honor well-deserved, but the tributes that followed were also iconic. In particular, Heart's choir-backed rendition of "Stairway to Heaven" had just about everyone in their feels, including the band itself. Fans were quick to spot the tear-filled eyes of both Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and assumed it was all due to Ann Wilson's incredible vocal range and Nancy Wilson's fiery guitar licks.

However, another factor wasn't necessarily being considered: the late John Bonham's son, Jason Bonham, was there and killing it on the drums. What's more, Plant had no idea he was even going to be there. Recently, after Concert Legacy pointed it out, Bonham himself added a bit of color and context to the situation.

"Well, in fact, I was a surprise to them they didn’t know I was coming but right before I walked on Robert turned to Jimmy and said 'we really should’ve invited Jason to this event' as they had all of their children and family there," Bonham wrote. "He points at me and I pointed back to him as if to say 'I got you this time you had no idea what I was coming.'"

But that wasn't the only interesting factoid Bonham dropped about the performance.

"On the evening in the performance I played in silence," he confessed. "Nothing worked. I couldn’t hear the band I couldn’t hear anybody and it wasn’t till I watched it back that I felt emotional but I’ve got to perform that with an amazing choir string section. I gotta hear the horn section cause they were right next to me. I actually suggested [Ann] and Nancy be the ones that take part to the musical director. I’ll probably get asked about this performance three times a week and I’m extremely proud that I got to play this this very special arrangement and he brought so much joy to so many."

Robert Plant's Connection to John Bonham and His Family

The truth is, Plant had an extremely special bond with "Bonzo" beyond that of bandmates. While touring, Plant received the horrific call that his 5-year-old son had taken extremely ill and had sadly died. Years later, Plant recalled just how supportive Bonham was during that devastating time.

“During the absolute darkest times of my life, when I lost my boy and my family was in disarray, it was Bonzo who came to me," Ultimate Classic Rock reported he had said in a different interview. "The other guys were from the South of England and didn’t have the same type of social etiquette that we have up here in the North that could actually bridge that uncomfortable chasm with all the sensitivities required … to console.”

Losing him three years later was nothing short of a tragedy. After Bonham died, Plant made it clear that the band couldn't go on without him. And while many have pleaded for them to reunite with Bonham's extremely talented son, it has remained too much for Plant.

In an interview with Billboard, Jason Bonham explained exactly what the legendary frontman told him regarding joining up:

"He said, ‘I loved your dad way too much. It’s not disrespect to you, you know the stuff better than all of us, and no one else who is alive can play it like you. But it’s not the same. I can’t go out there and fake it. I can’t be a jukebox. I can’t go out there and try to do it that way."

Plant does, however, occasionally sing a mellowed-out version of a few Led Zeppelin songs while touring with his band, Saving Grace, much to the delight of fans.

Despite being one of the greatest voices and talents in music history, Plant is not interested in capitalizing on his life and experiences. In a 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, Plant was asked if he'd ever consider writing a memoir or signing off on a biopic, to which he said without hesitation, "Not a chance". When asked why, he simply said:

"I’m going down with the ship, and so is my memory".

Mayhem delivered an exciting announcement to fans following its European tour earlier this year.

After reuniting in 1995 following a two-year hiatus that began after the 1993 death of Euronymous, the band, legendary Norwegian black metal band fronted by Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar, continues to cement its legacy on the road with another European run.

In an Instagram update, the quintet shared the dates and locations for the forthcoming tour, scheduled throughout October.

The trek will kick off in Budapest, then continue through major cities across Serbia, Romania, Greece and more before concluding in Cologne, Germany.

The 13-date tour also features influential Swedish black metal band Marduk as a special guest on select dates.

Before this, the band kicked off the year with the first leg of the Death Over Europe Tour, launching a 19-date trek across the Netherlands, Italy, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Finland and more in February.

At the time, the supporting acts were Marduk and the influential American death metal band Immolation.

Meanwhile, the five-piece band is currently wrapping up its summer festival season.

After performing at Hellfest Open Air Festival, Tons of Rock in June and Disaster Metal Fest on July 12, Mayhem will continue its festival run with a performance at Ilosaarirock Festival on July 17, followed by Frantic Fest in Italy on Aug. 15.

Mayhem's Death Over Europe tour supports the band's latest studio album Liturgy of Death, which they described as "examining loss, fear of dying, powerlessness and the fragility of existence through a stark and unrelenting lens."

Released in February via Century Media Records, the band's seventh studio album features eight tracks and two bonus tracks, including the lead single "Weep for Nothing."
