Sony Faces Backlash After Announcing Digital-Only PlayStation Games Starting in 2028
Over the years, we’ve seen a decline in physical media. From the disappearance of stores like Blockbuster to people purchasing fewer CDs and DVDs, digital media and the internet are taking over. Now, video games are following suit. Sony has announced that it will phase out its physical discs starting in 2028. This means PlayStation gamers will only be able to purchase and play digital games.

In a blog post, the company announced its shift from physical discs to digital, noting that the change is in response to evolving consumer preferences. “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, said in the blog post.
Since Sony announced the decision, the company has received backlash from PlayStation gamers. Mainstream media outlets such as NBC News, Yahoo! Tech, and Moneywise have since reported on PlayStation’s decision, noting the backlash from consumers.

X user @LilithLovett tweeted, “Sony announced them killing off physical games with a tweet and a blog post like it was some regular Wednesday, expecting people will be mad for a bit and move on. And now the backlash has gotten so big it’s being covered by mainstream news outlets. DON’T LET UP, DON’T SHUT UP.”
Others are also wondering how this change will affect retailers like GameStop. Online retail video game store Loot Box Gaming addressed Sony and PlayStation directly in a tweet. Concerns from gamers also include higher digital prices, loss of content and the ability to resell games.

Consumers are also urging Sony to address the issue, as the company hasn’t released a second statement since making the blog post. Since Sony’s announcement, over 323,600 people have signed a petition asking the company to reconsider. “A disc is a real game you own. You can lend it, trade it, resell it, gift it, collect it, or pass it down to your kids. A box with only a download code is not the same thing. It is a digital license in plastic packaging. You do not own it. You are renting access that can be revoked, and people have already had purchased movies deleted from their libraries and games pulled from sale weeks after launch.”
The petition also raises concerns about job losses and consumer choice, along with Grand Theft Auto VI confirming a digital-only release. “Ending physical media removes consumer choice, weakens local economies, and hands a few platform holders total control over how, and whether, you can access the games you buy. We are not against digital. We are against digital being the only option. A large and passionate community still wants a real, physical game they own outright, and Sony is about to take that choice away.”

Smash Mouth is officially returning with its first original studio album in 14 years.
The California rock band announced that Mercury Comet will arrive on Aug. 12, marking the group's first full collection of original studio material since 2012's Magic.
The announcement was shared by the band through an Instagram post and signals a major new chapter nearly three decades after it first formed in 1994.
Smash Mouth recently released the song "Better Believer" and followed it with the new single "Had Enuff," giving fans their first taste of original music from the band in more than a decade.
Founding bassist Paul DeLisle is leading the current version of Smash Mouth, now the only remaining original member following the retirement of longtime frontman Steve Harwell in 2021 and his death in 2023.

According to the announcement, Mercury Comet continues the mix of pop, rock, surf, ska and retro sounds that helped turn Smash Mouth into one of the biggest radio bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s while opening a new era for the group.

After welcoming singer Zach Goode as lead vocalist in 2022, Smash Mouth returned to recording with singles including "4th of July," "Ride On" and "Underground Sun." The band also released the holiday album Missile Toes in 2023.
Last year, DeLisle described "Ride On" as a continuation of the band's 2001 song "Pacific Coast Party."
"We wrote it as a continuation of our 2001 hit single, 'Pacific Coast Party,' with a similar good-vibe feel," DeLisle said in a statement, per PEOPLE.
"It's a very Smash Mouth-California style of rock/disco custom song made just for summer, a respectful and loving homage to Pablo Cruise."
The band's current lineup includes DeLisle on bass, Zach Goode on vocals, Michael Klooster on keyboards, Sean Hurwitz on guitar and Randy Cooke on drums.
Smash Mouth had previously planned to release the album earlier, but the project was delayed before finally receiving its Aug. 12 release date.
Formed in San Jose, California, Smash Mouth became one of the defining rock bands of the late '90s with hits including "Walkin' on the Sun," "All Star," "Then The Morning Comes" and its cover of "I'm a Believer."
The group's debut album, Fush Yu Mang, earned double-platinum certification, while 1999 follow-up Astro Lounge reached triple-platinum status and produced the worldwide hit "All Star."
The song later gained new generations of fans after appearing in the 2001 animated filmShrek.
Smash Mouth also received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for "All Star."
The band experienced several lineup changes over the years, but DeLisle remained a constant presence through every era of the group's history.
Following Harwell's retirement because of health issues in 2021, Zach Goode stepped in as the band's new singer in 2022. Harwell died in September 2023 at the age of 56 after suffering liver failure.
Smash Mouth is continuing to tour around the world as part of its Go For The Moon Tour 2026. The group is also scheduled to perform at Paperfest in Kimberly, where fans can expect classics such as "All Star," "Walkin' on the Sun" and "I'm a Believer" alongside the band's newest material.

General Mills has issued a voluntary recall over concerns that some of its products may contain a foreign material—in this instance, glass.
According to a notice posted on the FDA's website, the recall includes more than 3,000 cases of Pillsbury Bread Rolls "Hard Roll Dough," each containing 180 rolls, for a total of 554,400 rolls, and 1,260 cases of Pillsbury Bread Rolls "Kaiser Roll Dough," each containing 144 rolls, for a total of 181,440 rolls. The potentially affected products have UPC numbers of 721582-13283 4 and 7 21582-13288 9 on the packages. The affected cases have UPC numbers of 107-21582-13283-1 or 107-21582-13288-6.
The products have been distributed in the following states: Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.
It's unclear if these specific Pillsbury bread rolls are sold in stores or are only available to order. On the General Mills website, the company appears to sell these varieties by the case and references "back of house," suggesting they are popular items for restaurants to carry.
"Our bread rolls are designed to be highly tolerant to any BOH operation without the use of a proof box," reads the product's description. "Our manufacturing processes enable us to deliver product that is consistent in size and shape every time. Create a wide variety of product adaptations with our bread. Products can be cut, topped, or shaped to suit your specific operation and consumer needs."
Companies who have purchased these rolls with matching UPC numbers should not eat, serve, or donate the products. The rolls should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement.
'80s Glam Metal Icon Forms New Band 48 Years After Beginning Career
Nearly five decades after beginning his career, Tommy Thayer is proving he's still eager to explore new musical territory.
The longtime Kiss guitarist has announced the formation of Shogun Mojo, a new rock band featuring Dan Reed Network frontman Dan Reed, Swedish bassist Bengan Jonasson and drummer Robert Mehmet Ikiz. The group has signed with Frontiers Music Srl and is preparing to release its debut album, which blends rock, funk and fusion influences.
"I'm incredibly excited to be joining forces with Frontiers Music for the release of the new Shogun Mojo album," Thayer said in an Instagram post. "Collaborating with my dear friend Dan Reed on this project has been an inspiring and rewarding experience from start to finish. We set out to create something that was both powerful and unique, a dynamic blend of rock & roll, funk, and fusion, and I truly believe we've achieved that."
Thayer shared enthusiasm about not only the record, but the new partnership with the band's label.
"I'm extremely proud of this record and can't wait for all our fans to hear it," he continued. "Frontiers has been a fantastic partner, and I'm looking forward to sharing this exciting new chapter with music lovers around the world."

Thayer's career stretches back to 1978, when he co-founded the hard rock band Black 'N Blue. He later joined KISS as lead guitarist in 2002, replacing Ace Frehley, and spent more than two decades with the legendary rock group before the band’s farewell tour concluded in 2023. During his tenure, he helped record Sonic Boom and Monster while performing thousands of concerts around the world.
Now, 48 years after beginning his professional career, Thayer is embarking on another creative venture. With Shogun Mojo, the veteran guitarist is stepping into a fresh musical landscape while continuing the career that has made him one of hard rock’s most recognizable performers.

"It’s been about 15 years since a movie trailer gave me chills like this one just did," one YouTube user commented on Thursday, July 16, while another person wrote, "Really excited for this People might troll this movie But I am genuinely rooting for this."
Here's the synopsis offered by the studio: "The film is an electrifying true story about an unknown actor with an unshakable belief that he wasn’t just meant to write Rocky—he was meant to be Rocky Balboa. ’70s Rock Icon Announces New Dates for 2026 World Tour
Ann Wilson, the beloved frontwoman of the iconic '70s rock band Heart, has announced new dates for her 2026 world tour, bringing her backing band all the way to Japan. The exciting news was shared on Tuesday via Instagram, sparking massive enthusiasm among Japanese fans.

Monica Lewinsky Explains Why She Couldn't Leave Her White House Past Behind
Monica Lewinsky is looking back on her controversial past.
The former White House intern, 52, who lived through one of the biggest scandals in American history when she became involved with President Bill Clinton, is currently the host of a podcast called Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky. She’s also gone on to become a successful anti-bullying advocate. But in a new episode of her acclaimed podcast, Lewinsky sat down with Sopranos star Jamie-Lynn Sigler and reflected that accepting the issues of her past was key to moving forward and finding a happy future.
"It's such a big part of reclaiming, actually. You really can't move through all the steps until you've had acceptance," she said. "A lot of my progress during my dark decade really came about from integration and being able to integrate like, 'OK, I couldn't leave Monica Lewinsky the White House intern in the past,' like I had to find a way to not be ashamed and bring her with me, all the things. And so you can't integrate until you've accepted."
She went on to say that "so much work" went into facing her past and allowing that person to be part of her present self.
"It's hard enough out there. How do I make it not so hard in here?" she reflected.

Looking Back on Her TwentiesOn her podcast, Lewinsky previously spoke about what led her to make “bad decisions” in her twenties. She shared that a desire to feel “special” sometimes led her to do things she regretted, and that sometimes got her in trouble.
“I think in some ways that’s part of what got me in a lot of trouble in my early 20s of looking for and wanting to be special and feeling that feeling of specialness, of validation,” she said during an episode that featured Laura Day, an American writer and author of several self-help books, focusing on intuition, Fox News shared. “And when it came, I fell into that, making bad decisions a lot of times, not just in D.C., but a lot of different ways.”

Post Malone will headline the closing ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2026, confirming that the country-rock superstar will take center stage before the tournament's final match on Sunday.
On Instagram, FIFA shared the announcement with fans worldwide, writing: "The biggest FIFA World Cup in history deserves the biggest send-off.”
The performance is scheduled to begin at 1:30 P.M. at New York New Jersey Stadium, 90 minutes before Spain and Argentina meet in the men's World Cup final. Kickoff for the championship match is set for 3:00 P.M.
FIFA described the performance as a "landmark performance" designed to celebrate the end of the tournament and build excitement ahead of one of football's biggest matches.
Post Malone joins an extensive entertainment lineup assembled for the final day of the tournament.
Singer Nicole Scherzinger, FIFA Music Ambassador Robbie Williams and Italian star Laura Pausini are all set to appear during the pre-match festivities. Hollywood actor Tom Cruise will also make a special appearance during the event after previously participating in the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
Jennifer Hudson will perform the national anthem before kickoff. The Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award winner is scheduled to sing shortly before Spain and Argentina take the field.
Sports influencer and streamer IShowSpeed is also expected to participate in the celebrations surrounding the final.
The closing ceremony was produced in creative partnership with Balich Wonder Studio and is intended to combine global entertainment with football on one stage for viewers around the world.
Fans attending the final have been encouraged to arrive early to experience the full pre-match program. Stadium gates are scheduled to open at 11:00 A.M, allowing supporters to take part in entertainment activities and fan experiences before the ceremony begins.
Historic World Cup Final Features First-Ever Halftime ShowThe 2026 FIFA World Cup final will also introduce another first for the men's tournament: a halftime show.
Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber and BTS will co-headline the 11-minute performance during halftime of the final. Burna Boy and conductor Gustavo Dudamel are also part of the lineup, while Coldplay is expected to perform alongside the PS22 Chorus and the Sesame Street Muppets.
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is curating the performances and will be broadcast live to audiences around the world.

Olympic Runner, Who Fell During the Race, Finished With Help From an Unforgettable Person
Derek Redmond is now a retired sprinter with multiple accolades to his name, but at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, his story became one that fans shed a tear for. Over 20 years later, the heroic feat of finishing his semi-final run with the help of his father due to a devastating injury still tugs at the heart and became a part of Olympic history.
By the time the Olympics in Barcelona came around, Redmond was a favorite to take home gold in the 400m contest. His incredible track record proved he was ready to go all the way, having his best time set at 44.50 seconds in the 400m, which was a British record at the time. He won gold in the 4×400m relay at the 1991 World Championships and at the 1986 European Championships.
The only worry was that Redmond had already undergone five operations by 1992 and had recently undergone another surgery for his Achilles tendon only four months before the Games. He had initially pulled out of the 1988 Olympic Games due to the same injury.
Despite that, everything was coming together for the sprinter, and he recorded his fastest time during the first round. He also won his quarterfinal heat, which landed him in the semi-finals. Redmond was off to a good start until tragedy struck at the back straight about 250 metres from the finish.

He stunned onlookers when he decided to continue the race after seeing a crew with stretchers coming towards him. Despite the pain from the injury, Redmond got up and began to hobble the rest of the track.
“I got up quicker than I got out of my blocks,” he said, according to The Guardian. “I said to myself: ‘There’s no way I’m going to be stretchered out of these Olympics.’ I didn’t know where I was. I really, really believed I could still qualify.”
What caught the attention of onlookers and fans worldwide was the heartfelt moment that occurred seconds later. His father, Jim Redmond, jumped from the stands and bypassed Olympic security to enter the track to get to his son. While a sobbing Redmond initially refused his father's help, the two made their way to the finish line hand-in-hand. Jim let go of his son moments before the finish to allow him to cross on his own. While their actions led to Redmond's disqualification from the Games, they got a standing ovation from a crowd of 65,000.
“Even now, it’s hard to say how or why I did it,” said Jim. “It was a spontaneous reaction, as if I had seen him hit by a car. I certainly didn’t run down to help him finish – if anything, it was to stop him. I could accept the fact that my son was injured, but not that he was going to carry on in pain, causing himself even greater damage.”
Fans saw the moment as one of grit and determination, as well as a father's love for his son. The event became the subject of one of the International Olympic Committee's "Celebrate Humanity" videos, which proclaimed: "Strength is measured in pounds. Speed is measured in seconds. Courage? You can't measure courage".
Due to his injuries, Redmond decided to focus on new chapters of his career and played professional basketball for the Birmingham Bullets and the England national team. He would also become a motivational speaker. Jimc carried the Olympic torch in 2012 and died years later in 2022.

Country Star Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 12 Years After No. 1 Hit
Kenny Chesney is back on the Billboard Hot 100 in an unexpected return that comes 12 years after one of his biggest hits first dominated country radio.
The country superstar's 2014 single "American Kids" has re-entered the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 at No. 46, marking its first appearance on the chart since its original run more than a decade ago. The renewed momentum follows a surge in streams and social media activity tied to July 4 celebrations across the United States.
The song's return arrives during another strong year for country music and gives Chesney another major chart moment after decades as one of the genre's biggest names.
Originally released in June 2014 as the lead single from The Big Revival, "American Kids" became one of the defining songs of that summer. The track eventually climbed to No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, reached No. 1 on Country Airplay and peaked at No. 2 on Hot Country Songs.

Now, 12 years later, it is finding a new audience while reconnecting longtime fans with one of Chesney's signature songs.
The resurgence also comes as the singer prepares for a major new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, where the colorful school bus featured in the "American Kids" music video will be displayed for fans later this month.
The return of "American Kids" mirrors a broader trend of older country hits finding fresh success through streaming services and social media platforms.
Billboard's latest chart shows both Chesney and Zac Brown Band returning to the Hot 100 after Independence Day celebrations helped drive listeners back to songs closely connected with American summers and small-town memories.

The song introduced The Big Revival, an album that followed a rare year away from touring as Chesney focused on creating a project that felt different from his previous releases.
Speaking about the record in 2015, according to CBS News, Chesney explained why he stepped away from the road.
"It would have been very easy for us to make this record on a conveyor belt, because I've been guilty of that before. But I felt like I was at a place in my life where I deserve more and [the fans] deserve more."
He added: "It was worth really digging into what I wanted the record to be and to see how I was going to take my audience to a place that maybe collectively we haven't been before."
That search led him to "American Kids," written by Rodney Clawson, Luke Laird and Shane McAnally.
Chesney immediately knew the song stood apart from many others arriving in Nashville at the time.
"'American Kids' was that one thing that I was looking for that was different," Chesney said.
"There' s not that many of those songs around. We're an industry of chasers and copycats, we really are. That's just the way it is. And when you hear something completely different… I knew when I heard that song, that I was going to record it."
The song focused on growing up in small towns, chasing dreams and learning who you are.
The music video became another memorable part of the release. Directed by Shaun Silva, it featured Chesney performing with a group of young people aboard a brightly painted school bus.
The bus later became closely tied to the song and the album itself.

Fans will soon have the chance to see that same bus in person as part of the upcoming "Kenny Chesney: Living in Fast Forward" exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
The exhibit opens July 23, 2026, and will trace Chesney's journey from performing in his university bluegrass band to becoming one of the highest-grossing touring artists in country music history.
As "American Kids" climbs the charts once again, the song is proving that some summer anthems never completely disappear.
Sometimes they simply wait for a new generation to press play.

Just days after the Spider-Man star admitted on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that his attempt to befriend the Norwegian soccer sensation had gone unanswered, Haaland chimed in with a response of his own.
Commenting on the show’s Instagram post about the interview, the Manchester City striker wrote, "Dinner invitation accepted @tomholland2013. A little late 😅 Just name the place!"
Fans were quick to chime in on the exchange.
“better late than never,” one wrote.
“too busy smashing it at the World Cup 👊💯,” another noted.
A third said, “Are my eyes deceiving me? HAALAND YOU GOTTA DO A VLOG MEETING HOLLAND.”
Earlier this week, Holland, 30, confessed that he slid into Haaland's DMs after spotting him across the way at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix. Hoping to connect, the actor invited the soccer star to dinner—but never heard back.
According to the internet, Haaland isn't an avid movie watcher and reportedly didn't know who Holland was.

"Yes [I DM'd him], and I'll tell you what. That is exactly the type of humbling experience that is important for actors," Holland joked. He added, "You're like, 'I'll text him. I'll take him to dinner.' Not even a response. Not an excuse. Not, 'I'm busy tonight, I'm playing football.' Nada."
Rather than taking it personally, Holland laughed the whole thing off and even praised Haaland, calling the 25-year-old "incredible" and "an absolute legend," despite England knocking Norway out of the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals just days earlier.
Whether the pair actually end up sharing a meal remains to be seen, but at least the invitation is no longer sitting unanswered.

Intruder Arrested After Breaking Into 'Today' Studio
A man was arrested after breaking into the Today Show’s studio in New York City on Thursday, July 16, TMZ reports.
He confronted Craig Melvin, lunging at him. The man was also said to be asking for Al Roker, with law enforcement sources telling the outlet that he managed to get past security. When he couldn't find Roker, he turned his attention to Craig and yelled racial slurs at the co-host.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. ET, with the man being described as "white and was unarmed." He "entered a stairwell and made his way backstage -- we're told near the dressing room, though where exactly is unclear."
The incident did not occur during the broadcast, and nobody was injured. A photo obtained by TMZ showed Melvin, Roker, and co-host Dylan Dreyer looking shaken as they talked following the incident. But they were back on air 15 minutes later.
"We're told the incident has staff demanding answers about how an unauthorized stranger managed to trail one of the show’s biggest stars off the publicly accessible plaza and get so deep inside the building undetected," TMZ added.
The NYPD released a statement regarding the situation, saying that "it was reported to officers that there was a disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Center, within the confines of the Midtown North Precinct. Officers responded and placed an unidentified individual into custody. There were no injuries reported. The investigation remains ongoing," per PEOPLE.
This comes on the same day host Savannah Guthrie revealed she will be temporarily stepping away from the show to film something news.
“We’re about to do it. Guys, I’m headed over to shoot Wordle over the next few weeks,” Guthrie said. “We’re going to shoot the whole season and we’re super excited.”
“I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It’ll probably air, I think, in the new year," she added.
