Jamey Johnson’s 51st birthday was a star-studded affair at the Grand Ole Opry on Tuesday, July 14. The country legend celebrated another trip around the sun with a special Opry lineup of guests. They were Opry member Bill Anderson (who inducted him into the Grand Ole Opry in 2022), ERNEST, Randy Houser, Lee Brice, Tracy Lawrence, Ruby Leigh, Lily Meola, Andy Whatley & Co. and others. 

The concert also served as part of the Opry’s ongoing 'Summer of the Century' celebration honoring the legendary venue’s 100th anniversary. 

During the show, Johnson teamed up with Lawrence, 58, for a memorable duet on the latter’s '90s chart-topper “Time Marches On,” delivering lyrics that tell the story of an ordinary family aging over the decades, offering vivid descriptions of how life changes over time. The song also name-checks songs that made an impact over the years like Hank Williams’ “Kaw-Liga” and Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone.”    

“Time Marches On” has seen a resurgence in popularity after a remix of the song went viral on TikTok in recent years, thanks to the lyric: “Smokes a lot of dope.” The clip below, uploaded by one user, highlights the line in a humorous way, drawing widespread attention on the platform.

Before closing out their rendition of the song at the Grand Ole Opry, Johnson and Lawrence joined in on the joke, singing the altered TikTok version during the final verse. That moment can be viewed below in the TikTok clip uploaded by Lawrence.

Released on March 18, 1996, from Lawrence’s album of the same name, “Time Marches On” became the biggest and longest-running hit of his career, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, where it stayed for a straight three weeks. 

“You really want to know why I cut it? Because of the shock factor,” Lawrence admitted in an interview with Whiskey Riff, of the reason he released the tune, written by Bobby Braddock. “Because the radio had never played anything that says ‘Smokes a lot of dope’ in it, and I knew that it would either be a massive record just because of the shock factor of it, or it would die a violent death. There was no in-between. And it came out of the box with a bang.”

Long before Metallica became one of the biggest bands in rock history, they were just another hungry act playing clubs around Southern California. But according to Ratt drummer Bobby Blotzer, they already carried themselves differently than everyone else.

In a resurfaced Classic Rock interview recently republished online, Blotzer reflected on Ratt's early years on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip and recalled one of the first times he crossed paths with Metallica.

"I remember Metallica opening for us in some church in Pasadena," Blotzer said. "It wasn't an active church any more; they were using it for shows."

What stood out most wasn't the venue.

"Metallica always had an attitude like they were better than everybody else," Blotzer recalled. "I didn't get their trip then."

At the time, Ratt was chasing radio-friendly hard rock while Metallica was helping shape a much heavier sound.

"We were trying to write catchy 'airplay' songs that still had a rough edge," Blotzer said. "They were playing the stuff that we wouldn't want to play, over-riffing and not catchy. But who's got the last laugh?"

The comments came as the members of Ratt looked back on the early 1980s Sunset Strip scene, where bands including Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot, W.A.S.P. and Great White were all fighting for attention before many of them became household names.

Singer Stephen Pearcy also remembered how electric the Los Angeles club scene felt in those days, recalling that he watched Van Halen perform before the band signed a record deal—and no one was there.

"I used to sit on the stage at the Whisky A Go-Go when Van Halen played in front of 18 people," Pearcy said. "I'd be s---ting my pants, thinking: 'This is crazy.'"

Ratt would soon become one of the defining bands of the glam metal era, breaking through with Out of the Cellar in 1984 and the hit single "Round and Round." Metallica, meanwhile, went on to pioneer thrash metal and become one of the best-selling bands in music history.

Looking back decades later, Blotzer admitted he didn't understand Metallica's appeal at the time. History, however, ultimately answered the question he posed himself.

Released in 1975, "Feelings" became one of the decade’s most unforgettable ballads, turning Brazilian singer-songwriter Morris Albert into an international star.

The emotionally charged single spent an impressive 32 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 6, and quickly became one of the defining soft rock hits of the era. More than 50 years later, its simple melody and deeply personal lyrics continue to resonate with listeners around the world.

Albert wrote "Feelings" several years before it became a global success.

Built around little more than piano, strings and his earnest vocal performance, the song captures the pain of lost love through direct, conversational lyrics. Rather than relying on elaborate production, its emotional honesty became the driving force behind its widespread appeal.

"The inspiration, that's the plain truth, was a woman, a beautiful woman from Rio," Albert told Revista Istoé in 2004. "Everything I write is something I've experienced in life, or
seen happen, or wanted to convey. 'Feelings' had a muse. I was 19, she was 30, it was a platonic attraction, nothing happened."

Though Albert never revealed the identity of the woman who inspired the song, he explained that she was a public figure.

"This love lingered in my mind for a long time; I couldn't tell her I loved her, so I wrote it," Albert said. "I remember it well. I was in a house in São Paulo, preparing the songs for my first LP—it was the vinyl era—I was alone, it was raining heavily outside, I couldn't sleep. The lyrics came all at once, directly in English."

Listeners immediately connected with the song's universal message.

The song's themes of heartbreak, longing and vulnerability transcended language barriers, helping "Feelings" become a worldwide hit. It reached the Top 10 in the United States while also charting across Europe, Latin America and Asia, making Albert one of Brazil’s most successful crossover artists of the decade.

Its success extended well beyond the charts.

"Feelings" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and quickly became one of the most frequently covered ballads of the 1970s. Artists from a wide range of musical genres recorded their own interpretations, while the original version became a staple of easy listening and adult contemporary radio.

The song also became one of the signature recordings of the soft rock era.

Its gentle orchestration, understated arrangement and emotionally vulnerable lyrics helped define the mellow, introspective style that dominated much of 1970s adult contemporary music. Decades later, "Feelings" remains a fixture on soft rock playlists and nostalgic radio programs.

A newly released state report has revealed that aWalt Disney World guest died after suffering a medical emergency while riding one of the resort's most iconic attractions.

According to documents from the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services that were obtained by TMZ on Thursday, July 16, a 54-year-old man with a pre-existing medical condition experienced a cardiac emergency while riding It's a Small World back on April 24. The guest was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

The incident only recently became public after it appeared in the state's latest theme park injury report, nearly three months after it occurred. The report did not indicate that the attraction itself caused the medical emergency, only that the incident happened while the guest was on the ride. The heartbreaking case is one of several recent deaths connected to Disney parks, though not all have occurred on attractions. Earlier this year, authorities also launched an investigation after a body was discovered at Disney Springs. Law enforcement officials confirmed the incident, though few details have been released publicly.

Late last year, a separate incident at Disneyland also made headlines last fall when a guest reportedly died after suffering a possible heart attack while riding Haunted Mansion. Another involved a man in his 60s who suffered a medical episode at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground before later dying at a hospital. Another woman in her 40s also died after being transported to a local hospital, while two additional guests died at Disney resort hotels during the same period—one sadly due to suicide.

Authorities said there were no signs of foul play in the cases where details were made public, and none of the incidents were reported to have happened while guests were on rides.

Not every rock band in history managed to knock it out of the park with the very first song on their very first album, but that's exactly what Led Zeppelin did...thanks, in large part, to John Paul Jones.

As Zeppelin fans are well aware, while Jimmy Page and Robert Plant might be the first names casual listeners associate with the band, Jones played an incredibly important role in creating Led Zeppelin's sound. One of the most innovative musicians of the era, he was equally brilliant on bass, keyboards, mandolin, recorder and Mellotron.

When it came to "Good Times Bad Times," the iconic opening track on Led Zeppelin's 1969 self-titled debut album, Jones wrote the song's defining riff on a Hammond organ, according to Led Zeppelin All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Track.

Considering the fact that "Good Times Bad Times" is still one of Led Zeppelin's most beloved songs of all time, Jones clearly struck songwriting gold...but he didn't make things easy for himself in the process.

“That’s the hardest riff I ever wrote, the hardest to play," Jones told Rolling Stone in 2008.

In Martin Popoff’s book Led Zeppelin: All The Albums, All The Songs, Jones explained his approach to writing riffs, noting how his compositions differed from the ones that Page wrote.

“In terms of actual riffs, anything with notes [laughs], lots of notes, like ‘Black Dog,' ‘Good Times Bad Times’…those were my riffs," he said. "And anything that was kind of lurchy and chordy were Page’s riffs. That’s how you tell them apart.”

In a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone, Page acknowledged his bandmate's contribution to the song.

"John Paul Jones came up with the riff. I had the chorus. John Bonham applied the bass-drum pattern. That one really shaped our writing process. It was like, 'Wow, everybody's erupting at once,'" he said.

"'Good Times, Bad Times,' as usual, came out of a riff with a great deal of John Paul Jones on bass, and it really knocked everybody sideways when they heard the bass drum pattern, because I think everyone was laying bets that Bonzo was using two bass drums, but he only had one," Page explained.

The guitarist was right about everybody being knocked sideways when Led Zeppelin came out.

"Talk about telegraphing your punch: The cover of Led Zeppelin, the British quartet's seismic 1969 debut, shows the Hindenburg airship, in all its phallic glory, going down in flames. The image did a pretty good job of encapsulating the music inside: sex, catastrophe and things blowing up," wrote Greg Kot in a 2001 retrospective review of Led Zeppelin for Rolling Stone.

"The swagger is there from the get-go, on 'Good Times Bad Times': Jimmy Page's guitar pounces from the speakers, fat with menace; John Bonham's kick drum swings with anvil force; Robert Plant rambles on about the perils of manhood. Hard rock would never be the same," Kot continued, adding, "There may be better, more refined Zep albums than Led Zeppelin...but none sounds quite as gratifyingly raw or is as comprehensive in defining the band's intentions."

The UK band proved that despite its short-lived run as a supergroup, it created a lasting legacy through timeless songs, including the iconic track “In the Dead of the Night.”

At a time when progressive rock was beginning to lose mainstream popularity, with punk and new wave began reshaping the music landscape, lead vocalist and bassist John Wetton and his former King Crimson bandmate Bill Bruford, joined forces with fellow musicians Eddie Jobson of Roxy Music on keyboards and Allan Holdsworth of Soft Machine on guitar as they formed an all-star progressive rock band that would later be recognized as one of the “greatest supergroups” of all time.

With this, the quartet opened their self-titled debut album with "In the Dead of the Night."

Released in 1978, the track became known for its musical complexity and technical excellence, particularly its use of a 7/4 time signature, which gave the song a unique and intricate rhythm that complemented Wetton’s powerful vocals.

Holdsworth, who delivered the legendary guitar solo on the track, explained that it wasn't written beforehand but rather was completely improvised during the recording.

"I never played a solo that wasn't a complete improvisation, so if I did it again, it wouldn't be the same,” he mentioned in a 1999 interview with Cherry Lane. “That's the part of music that I love. I always wanted to become a good improviser, and the challenge of the whole thing is trying to figure out different ways to play all these solos and chord sequences. It's simply the way I approach the guitar."

However, with the musical landscape shifting drastically, particularly for progressive rock, UK’s signature song never became a mainstream hit but earned recognition as a “quintessential piece of transitional prog,” especially among fans and listeners of the genre.

Nearly five decades after its release, “In the Dead of the Night” continues to receive widespread praise from listeners, with many calling it a progressive rock “masterpiece.”

“The creme-de-la-creme of Music. This groundbreaking masterpiece still sounds as modern and interesting as it did 45 years ago,” one commenter wrote on Bill Bruford’s YouTube channel.

“Great piece of music that suddenly goes stratospheric when Holdsworth opens up his solo.

Such authority I’ve never seen in a musician,” another added.

The same sentiment was echoed by another commenter who said, “Still a great song. It holds up so well. Great band. John Wetton's voice sends shivers up my spine.”

Unfortunately, after releasing two studio albums and undergoing a major lineup change with Holdsworth and Bruford departing the band, UK ultimately disbanded in the early 1980s due to conflicts over musical direction.

Despite this, UK’s "In the Dead of the Night" has outlived the supergroup itself by remaining their most celebrated recordings nearly five decades after its release.

As someone who watched it all happen, it's hard to explain just how magical Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov's gold medal-winning performance at the 1988 Winter Olympics really was at the time. There were some pretty amazing pair skating teams on the ice in Calgary that year (including Yelena Valova and Oleg Vasilyev, also representing the Soviet Union, who took home the silver). But the truth is, nearly 40 years later, I can barely remember them. Gordeeva and Grinkov's near-flawless performances in both the long and short programs, on the other hand, remain unforgettable.

The young skaters were paired as a team when Grinkov was 15 and Gordeeva was just 11 years old. As she explained in her book, My Sergei: A Love Story, their coaches decided to put them together because neither one of them were strong jumpers on their own at that point. Initially, the significant difference in their heights drew some criticism, but it wasn't long before they proved all the haters wrong. G&G (as the pair was known) won their first World Championships, as well as the Soviet Nationals, in 1986; they won the Worlds again in 1987.

Naturally, an Olympic medal was the next logical career milestone for the duo. But those dreams were almost dashed when Grinkov caught his skate in the ice while they were training for the games and dropped Gordeeva on her forehead.

"I didn't feel any pain at first, then my head felt like it was splitting apart. Someone picked me up, and then I blacked out. I came to in the first-aid room, and I was driven to the hospital," Gordeeva wrote.

The young skater suffered a serious concussion which forced her to stay in the hospital for six days.

"I lay there worrying about missing practice and the Olympics, and I was mad at Sergei because I thought this fall was his mistake," she recalled. "Then there was a knock on the door, and it was Sergei."

While Gordeeva always considered Grinkov handsome, she hadn't really thought of him in a romantic way before (he was just a "co-worker"). But in that moment, something changed.

"He was carrying a dozen roses, and he was very upset," she wrote. "It was the first time he'd given me flowers. I was surprised, even happy to see how distressed he was. Spending so much time together can lead to intense personality conflicts, and successful pairs are not necessarily friendly. But Sergei was so sad that I began to feel sorry for him."

As their personal bond developed, Gordeeva explained, so did the pair's symmetry on the ice:

"It was another week before I was allowed on the ice, and Sergei continued to visit me at home every day. When, at last, I could skate again, I immediately noticed a change in the way he was holding me. He was holding me tighter, as if he didn't want to give me a chance to touch the ice. Something had happened in those two weeks, and even I — so focused on skating, so serious about training and life — realized that his thoughts for me had changed. Before we had been like two skaters. After that, we were a pair."

It was the pair's seemingly effortless synchronicity that set them apart when they took the ice in Calgary. Of course, their technical skill and speed were staggering, too, but it was clear that these two had a one-in-a-million kind of connection.

So it wasn't a huge surprise when the gold medalists got married during a hiatus from competing in 1991; their daughter, Daria, was born the next year. Gordeeva and Grinkov made a triumphant return to the Olympics in 1994 at Lillehammer, Norway, where they won the gold again.

Tragically, the next year, Grinkov suddenly collapsed on the ice while training at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., with Gordeeva. After being taken to Adirondack Medical Center, he was pronounced dead at the age of 28. The cause of death was a massive heart attack, the result of an undiagnosed genetic condition that was later named after him, according to People.

“He was my hero,” Gordeeva told the Los Angeles Times in 1996. “From the first time I met him and the first time I started to skate with him, I always admired him."

Gordeeva is still active in the figure skating world as a performer, coach and choreographer.

More than five decades after it topped the charts, Bread's "Make It with You" remains the only song by the soft rock group to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, a record that still sets it apart in the band's long list of hits.

Written by lead singer David Gates and released in June 1970, the song climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending August 22, 1970. It stayed at No. 1 for one week, but its impact lasted far longer. Fifty-six years later, the track continues to be one of the best-known songs from the soft rock era.

"Make It with You" first appeared on Bread's second album, On the Waters. The single became the group's first Top 10 hit and helped push the album to No. 12 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Billboard later ranked the song as the No. 13 song of 1970. It also earned a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America after selling more than one million copies in the United States.

The song was also successful outside America, reaching No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart and charting in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and other markets.

Although Bread placed 13 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1970 and 1977 and scored six Top 10 hits, "Make It with You" remained the band's only chart-topper.

Other major hits included "Baby I'm-a Want You," which reached No. 3, "If" at No. 4, "Everything I Own" at No. 5, and "Lost Without Your Love," which peaked at No. 9.

Bread's Signature Soft Rock Classic

David Gates wrote the song and recorded nearly all of the instruments heard on the track. According to the recording credits, Gates handled lead and harmony vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, and strings.

Drummer Mike Botts was the only other member of Bread to appear on the recording.

The lyrics used gentle language and soft melodies to deliver a romantic message that listeners quickly connected with.

The song includes the lines:

"And if you're wondering what this song is leading to
I want to make it with you"

The meaning of the phrase sparked discussion when the song was released. While many listeners saw it as a romantic proposal, the wording remained open enough to avoid problems with radio censors during the era.

The record's smooth sound also helped define the growing soft rock movement of the early 1970s, placing Bread alongside artists who dominated FM radio during the decade, according to American Songwriter.

The success of "Make It with You" helped establish Bread as one of Los Angeles' leading soft rock acts.

The band, led by Gates alongside Jimmy Griffin and Robb Royer, had struggled to gain attention with its 1969 debut album. The breakthrough single changed that quickly and turned Bread into a major name in popular music.

Bread followed the hit with several successful singles and albums throughout the decade, including Manna, Baby I'm-a Want You and Guitar Man.

Still, none of the group's later releases matched the chart achievement of "Make It with You."

The song's legacy has continued through numerous cover versions over the years.

Among the most notable was Aretha Franklin's version, which appeared on her 1971 live album Aretha Live at Fillmore West. Other artists who later recorded the song included Claudine Longet, Ralfi Pagan, the Pasadenas, Let Loose, and Filipino folk-pop band Ben&Ben, whose version became the theme for the television series of the same name.

The song also carries a memorable family story from Gates' early success.

When the singer returned to his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, after the record reached No. 1, his mother celebrated the achievement but misunderstood the title of the song, per Songfacts.

She told reporters that she could not understand why her son had named his new hit "Naked With You."

For a band that produced a long list of radio favorites, "Make It with You" remains the one that reached the summit first and the only one that ever did.

Actor Dean Butler, who played Almanzo Wilder in the original Little House on the Prairie television series, just gave his opinion regarding Netflix's recent take on Laura Ingalls Wilder's book series.

People magazine reported that Butler took to his Instagram account on July 15 to discuss Netflix's Little House on the Prairie, which was released on July 9. At the start of the Instagram video, Butler shared that he recently began "watching with interest the new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie." Butler said that he appreciated the new show's musical moments within the Ingalls family's household.

"Something that I think is really wonderful about this is the family singing that is going on. Writers have rolled in songs that Pa played on his fiddle and the family is singing along, and they are doing it beautifully. And this is really the spirit of Laura's book," said Butler, who began starring as Laura Ingalls' (Melissa Gilbert) eventual husband during the original show's sixth season, which premiered in 1979.

Butler then complimented the new show's stars and compelling visuals.

"This is a very appealing cast, the show is beautifully produced, pictures are gorgeous. There is a lot of good stuff going on here," said the actor, now 70.

Beck is returning with new music, and he's bringing some familiar faces along with him.

The Grammy winner announced his new studio album, Ride Lonesome, set for release Sept. 18 through Capitol Records. It marks his first new record since 2019's Hyperspace.

Ride Lonesome is also a reunion between Beck and several musicians with whom he toured years ago and who helped record some of his most well-known records, including Sea Change, Morning Phase and Mutations. The returning collaborators include Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Jason Falkner. Nigel Godrich, who previously worked with Beck on Sea Change and Mutations, returned to mix the album.

The singer-songwriter commented on the process, saying in a statement, "It had been a decade since we went in the studio and recorded Morning Phase. This time It felt like the playing and the chemistry had evolved and deepened— a sound that’s come together over the decades of working together."

"While we were revisiting a musical and physical place, it also felt like we were finding new sounds and emotional textures along the way," he concluded.

The tracklist for Lonesome Ride is as follows, "Ride Lonesome," "Run Away," "In The Night," "Failed Words," "Bleed," "Disappearing Act," "For Your Love," "Slow Canyon," "It Ends Right Here," "Falling Through My Hands," "If You Don’t Know What Love Is" and "Beyond The Light."

Beck released the first single from the album, the title track "Lonesome Ride," in early 2026. At the same time as the album announcement, he released another single from the upcoming record called "In The Night." The music video was directed by Mikai Karl and stars French actor Denis Lavant.

The new album will be supported by a North American tour in late 2026. It begins with the first stop in Vancouver, Canada, on Sept. 16, continuing with performances into October. Several dates have already sold out.

As eviction night approached, it seemed like the "Red Corner" and "Crossroads" alliances were going to merge, looking to boot Taylor Brown for possibly being close to the other side of the house. When they told Ashley about this, however, she decided to report this information to others, even naming the group of people who were going to keep her. When word got back to the majority, their opinion on her soured like a badly-mixed appletini. Feeling she could not be trusted moving forward, the entire house came together to say "Happy trails" to Ashley Trail.

Loudon Wainwright III is heading back on tour, and it's been nearly two decades in the making.

The Grammy-winning hitmaker will return to Australia and New Zealand in February 2027 for the first time in almost 20 years for a seven-date tour. The trek will stop in Auckland, Wellington, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. Wainwright announced the news to fans on July 16 on social media.

Tickets for the highly anticipated upcoming tour are going on sale soon, with a presale starting on Wednesday, July 22, at 11 a.m. local time. The general sale starts at the same time on Friday, July 24.

For fans in the region, the upcoming shows offer a rare chance to catch one of folk music's most respected songwriters in an intimate theater setting. Considering he hasn't visited the area to perform in almost two decades, anyone eager to catch a show from Wainwright should try to get tickets to one of these seven stops.

Some fans of Wainwright shared their excitement about the 2027 tour in the comments on his Instagram post. One simply wrote, "OMG." Others said, "Loudon! The Australian crawl! Wish i could be there," and "Thank you thank you thank you for coming to Perth!"

The last time Wainwright performed in Australia was back in 2008. He went on an extensive tour of the country, performing with his daughter, fellow musician Lucy Wainwright Roche. Fans of the folk icon have been eager to welcome him back to the region for a long time now.

Wainwright first broke out in the music industry in the 1970s. His only major chart hit was 1972's "Dead Skunk," which was a single from his record called Album III. While the song was originally released in 1972, it didn't find success on music charts until the next year, when it peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Alan Walden, the music manager, promoter and publisher who helped launch the careers ofLynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band and Otis Redding, has died. He was 83.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Walden died Thursday, July 16, in Macon, Georgia, after spending several weeks in hospice care. His daughter Jessica Walden confirmed his death.

Walden was one of the architects of Southern rock long before the genre became a national phenomenon. Alongside his older brother Phil Walden, he helped build Capricorn Records into the label that introduced The Allman Brothers Band to a wider audience and became synonymous with Southern rock. Earlier in his career, he worked closely with soul icon Otis Redding, helping manage the singer during his breakthrough years before Redding's tragic death in 1967.

His influence stretched well beyond those legendary acts. During his decades in the music business, Walden worked with artists including Sam & Dave, Percy Sledge, Clarence Carter, Arthur Conley, Al Green, Etta James, Boz Scaggs and The Outlaws. He also co-founded Redwal Music, whose catalog included classics such as "Respect," "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," "Soul Man" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long."

After leaving Capricorn in 1970, Walden founded Hustler's Inc. and set out to find the next great Southern rock band. In a 2002 interview with Swampland, he recalled auditioning 187 groups before discovering Lynyrd Skynyrd.

"I went on a talent search for that 'special' band and auditioned 187 bands in one year and I only kept one! The 13th band I auditioned was LYNYRD SKYNYRD!!! I changed my lucky number from 5 to 13!"

Walden took the Jacksonville band to Muscle Shoals to record demos before eventually helping secure its first recording contract.

Despite the obstacles, he never stopped believing in the group.

"I am going to make Lynyrd Skynyrd happen even if it kills me!" he recalled shouting after a particularly discouraging setback.

Walden managed the band through its formative years, helping lay the groundwork for enduring classics including "Free Bird," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Simple Man" and "Gimme Three Steps." He later parted ways with the group in 1974 but retained enormous pride in what they had accomplished together.

Reflecting on the artist who meant the most to him, Walden reserved his highest praise for Redding.

"I began with Otis Redding who remained my favorite and accomplished more than them all put together," Walden told Swampland. "He put the 'S' and the 'O' in SOUL MUSIC. It never got any better than OTIS!"

Two years before his death, Walden reflected on his remarkable career in a video message, saying he was "very happy to be a part" of Georgia's rich musical legacy. Speaking about Redding, he called the soul icon "the best friend I had in life" and "one of the nicest human beings that walked the Earth."

Walden was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2003 in recognition of his contributions to the music industry. His impact extended far beyond the artists whose names appeared on album covers, helping shape the sound of Southern rock and soul music for generations.
