Before Christopher Cross had one of the biggest debut albums in music history, a jam on a Paul McCartney & Wings song helped spark one of his signature hits.

Released in 1980, “Ride Like the Wind” became Cross’ breakthrough single, pairing his smooth vocals with a propulsive rhythm and unmistakable backing vocals from Michael McDonald. Decades later, the song earned another distinction when Amazon Music included it among its 50 Greatest Soft Rock Songs of All Time.

“We were living in Houston at the time, and on the way down to Austin to record the songs, it was just a beautiful Texas day,” Cross told Songfacts. “I took acid. So I wrote the words on the way down from Houston to Austin on acid.”

Part of the song’s foundation stretched back several years.

Cross and his band used to perform the 1973 Wings song “Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five,” from Band on the Run, during their live shows. The musicians would stretch the song into a jam, and Cross began singing a wordless “ba da da da” refrain during the middle section.

That musical idea stuck with him.

“I took that part, and I went, ‘you know, there’s something about this that’s got the thing,’ so then I wrote the tune around that,” Cross told Music Radar. “I had that part first, and then I wrote the verses. And I don’t think I’ve ever told Paul that. He’s probably gonna say ‘I should have gotten royalties.'”

The refrain eventually became a centerpiece of “Ride Like the Wind,” but Cross paired it with a far different story. He wrote the lyrics from the perspective of an outlaw racing toward the Mexican border, creating a cinematic sense of urgency that complemented the song’s relentless forward motion.

McDonald added another distinctive element.

The Doobie Brothers singer contributed backing vocals to the recording, his powerful voice echoing Cross throughout the chorus. The combination gave “Ride Like the Wind” a harder edge than many of the mellow recordings that would become associated with Cross, while still retaining the polished sound that helped define soft rock at the dawn of the ’80s.

The song raced up the charts.

“Ride Like the Wind” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent several weeks behind Blondie’s “Call Me.” It appeared on Cross’ self-titled debut, which also produced “Sailing” and helped fuel his extraordinary sweep at the 1981 Grammy Awards, where he won Album, Record and Song of the Year, as well as Best New Artist.

“I never expected in a million years that my first album would be successful at all,” Cross told Write on Music. “It was pure belief in the process and in the craft and the desire to do it.”

More than four decades later, “Ride Like the Wind” remains one of Cross’ defining recordings. Its place among Amazon Music’s greatest soft rock songs underscores its longevity, while its unexpected connection to Paul McCartney reveals that one of 1980’s biggest hits began years earlier with a band simply stretching out onstage.

Global icon Dolly Parton may be gone, but the legendary entertainer made sure some of her dreams would continue coming to life long after her death.

One day after Parton died at age 80, her team revealed the extraordinary number of projects the country icon had in development, from unreleased music and a Broadway musical to a biopic, documentary, scripted series and even an avatar show.

More remarkably, Parton’s longtime manager Danny Nozell says the singer didn’t simply leave behind a collection of unfinished projects. She spent years working with a handpicked team on a roadmap designed to carry out her plans far into the future.

“Dolly worked up until the day she died,” Nozell said in an Aug. 26 statement. “She loved seeing her dreams come to life, and loved knowing her work brought people joy.”

According to Nozell, Parton was also characteristically prepared for a future she knew she wouldn’t necessarily be around to see.

“Ever the planner, Dolly worked with the team that she handpicked, for the past several years to build a project roadmap that will guide us for decades to come,” he continued.

Dolly Parton Left Behind Projects for ‘Decades to Come’

Nozell said Parton’s team intends to ensure that “the many dreams she had yet to fulfill are brought to life,” explaining that numerous projects had reached various stages of development before her death.

The manager also addressed what could become an important question for fans as new Parton projects continue appearing months and even years from now: How much involvement did Dolly herself actually have?

According to Nozell, fans can be confident that projects released through Parton’s official channels carry her approval.

“If you see unreleased music, products, books, experiences, and campaigns launched through official Dolly Parton channels, you can have confidence in knowing that she placed her personal stamp on it,” he said.

That means Parton’s death won’t bring an immediate end to new material from the country legend. In fact, some of the projects she was developing are scheduled to arrive within weeks.

Dolly Parton’s Final Projects Revealed

Among the projects already on Parton’s calendar was Dolly Parton’s SongTeller Hotel, which is scheduled to begin welcoming guests Sept. 14 before celebrating its grand opening Sept. 29.

Her Life of Many Colors Museum is also scheduled to open Sept. 29, while Dolly Dolls are slated to launch online Sept. 15 and Cup of Ambition Coffee will debut online Sept. 29 before arriving at retail in spring 2027.

Other projects already in the works at the time of Parton’s death include:

• Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stops celebration for National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, beginning Sept. 13, 2026
• Dolly on the Holly, arriving during the 2026 holiday season
• Kendra Scott x Dolly’s “The 9 to 5 Collection,” launching in January 2027
• Dolly’s Dog Treats, coming in early 2027
• Dolly Bedding & Home Decor, planned for the third quarter of 2027

And those are only the projects with announced launch windows.

Parton’s team says additional projects in the pipeline include unreleased music, a Dolly avatar show, a Dolly musical documentary, a biopic, a docuseries, a scripted series and an animated Billy the Kid series, with further details to be announced.

Dolly Parton’s Broadway Musical Will Open After Her Death

One of the biggest projects Parton left behind is DOLLY: A True Original Musical, the Broadway production inspired by her life and career.

Previews are scheduled to begin Dec. 7, 2026, with opening night set for Jan. 19, 2027, which would have been Parton’s 81st birthday.

The musical was among the major projects Parton had continued developing late in her life. Before her death, it was scheduled to officially open in 2027 and include both new songs written by Parton and some of the biggest hits from her decades-long career.

Her team is promising more details about the other projects she left behind in the months and years ahead.

For Nozell and the people Parton personally chose to safeguard her work, however, the mission is already clear: The projects that emerge after her death aren’t intended simply to capitalize on the legacy she left behind. According to her manager, they’re part of a plan Parton herself spent her final years putting into place.

“Dolly worked up until the day she died,” Nozell said.

And if everything goes according to the roadmap she left behind, her work isn’t finished yet.

Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright‘s split continues to heat up as Taylor shared on Instagram that Cartwright is trying to “sabotage” any efforts he’s making to move forward with his life.

In a deleted post, captured by several fan accounts, Taylor shared a screenshot of a direct message from Cartwright to a sponsor telling them she has “some information” about Taylor she’d like to share. Taylor hit back, saying he’s 637 days sober and every time he tries to move forward, something like this continues to happen. He claims he’s “stayed quiet for close to a year” but had no “choice but to post this stuff publicly.”

“This is just another example of her contacting every company, brand, or opportunity I get, trying to sabotage my ability to work and move forward with my life,” he wrote.

The Valley and Vanderpump Rules fans have mostly sided with Cartwright during the split. But several people expressed concern that Cartwright went too far if she, indeed, was reaching out to companies and brands.

Fans on X were sharply divided over Cartwright’s latest comments, with some accusing her of “harassing” him and insisting she needs to move on. Others defended her, arguing there was “nothing wrong” with what she wrote, while some took a more neutral stance and said both Taylor and Cartwright need to stop badmouthing each other. Meanwhile, another fan suggested his silence may have been strategic, claiming he “thought that’s what he had to do to get back on the show.”

But Redditors largely rallied behind Cartwright in the latest drama, with many arguing that the screenshot Taylor shared didn’t actually show her doing anything wrong.

Several users pointed out that she appeared to be asking an event organizer whether Taylor was involved and offering to donate, while others said they understood why she would want organizations to know about her alleged experiences with him.

“I don’t see anything wrong with her post,” one Redditor wrote, while another said they would also warn organizations about an alleged abuser. Still, some urged both of them to stop publicly escalating their conflict, with one user noting that Cartwright’s actions may not be “healthy” but that Taylor’s decision to make the private exchange public only fuels the drama.

An original cast member of Disney’s High School Musical just hit the stage in the latest live adaptation of the hit film, breathing life into an entirely different character in a move fans are calling the “most iconic casting ever actually.”

KayCee Stroh, who portrayed Martha Cox in the trilogy, takes on the role of the iconic drama teacher, Ms. Darbus, in the stage version of the beloved musical currently running at The Lyric Theatre in Lowry, Salford.

“This will be my love letter to the fans,” she said in a clip uploaded to TikTok by the stage production’s official account.

“When I did receive the call, I was a little bit shocked,” she added, joking that, 20 years later, she wasn’t sure if she could still “pull off this whole Martha thing.” But it hit her that, “Yes, I need to do this,” and fans quipped that the “Martha to Ms Darbus pipeline feels so right.”

“I am so honored that I get to usher High School Musical into the next generation of Wildcats,” Stroh added, but it’s the OG fans who are really living for it.

Clips of the new production’s megamix, which comes at the end alongside the bows and is permitted to be filmed, flooded the social media platform, and fans of the beloved Disney franchise were floored by the creative choices on display.

Stroh takes center stage in her oh-so-sparkly costume during the mashup of the production’s music, breaking out her iconic “Pop & Lock, Jam & Break” move from the original film, and then boldly mouthing “Don’t!” before the lyrics “stick to the status quo.”

The message was well-received, with one applauding, “A baddie never really stops being a baddie 🤌✨.”

International fans also vented their frustration, lamenting their inability to see her perform live: “So jealous really want to see this! She’s awesome and such a star 🤍.”

The production, which is the first UK non-replica production, runs through Sept. 19 before transferring to the West End.

Dee Snider, the former Twisted Sister frontman, recently told his fans a major life update and revealed on Instagram that he broke his shoulder.

“The toughest thing about the break, besides the discomfort, pain, the annoyance of wearing the sling, [is that] sleeping’s a [explicit] if it’s the hand you favor. I’m a righty; broke my right shoulder,” the 71-year-old musician explained.

He started the video talking about how he was playing basketball with his adult kids, where he got knocked over and “went down like a ton of bricks.”

“Slammed my whole right side,” he continued and joked, “I could’ve sworn out of the corner of my eye I saw one of my sons doing a victory dance.”

Snider shares four kids with his wife, Suzette — Jesse, Shane, Cody and Cheyenne — all born between 1982 and 1996.

He started off the video talking about how many parents can relate to the joys of when their kids were younger and how they “tend to dominate them” but also “letting them win because we’re so much bigger.”

“They’re laughing, they’re having fun with us, but the fact is we are these larger-than-life individuals,” Snider advises. “There will come a time they are our size or bigger than we are. They will dominate us. This will be their revenge. Whether it’s conscious or subconscious, they’re out to get even with us and watch us laying on the floor, writhing in pain.”

The legendary frontman continued on, saying that his recovery includes being in a sling for eight weeks and going to physical therapy. Afterward, he will go in for surgery.

Despite the scary update, he told his fans not to worry about him.

“Don’t cry for me, Argentina. Other than that, I’m doing great, all things considered. It’s just a real pain in the [explicit], aka shoulder,” he concluded.

In the Vogue interview, Sabalenka opened up about the onslaught of criticism she’s faced, particularly on social media.

“With a lot of love and a lot of attention and a lot of success, there’s always gonna be people who judge you,” she shared. “They judge your look, they judge your grunting, your nationality, even your 

private life, your choices. I don’t scroll a lot, but sometimes I’ll see random comments on Instagram, TikTok, Threads, and I’ll ask my manager, ‘Do people really hate me that much?’ Then I go into the stadium and I feel so much support, and I realize that on the internet, it’s so few people, but it’s so loud. Sometimes it’s a fake account, and I think, You don’t even have the balls to show your face? Or sometimes you click on the profile, and you see it’s a mother with three kids, a happy family living a very conventional, perfect life. And the stuff that she’s messaging you, it’s ‘I want you to die, I want your family to have cancer, you’re a whore.’ And I think: There’s something wrong with this planet.”

Below Deck Mediterranean bosun Nathan Gallagher is breaking his silence on his arrest and asking fans to hear his side before passing judgment. But will they be ready to forgive?

Gallagher was arrested in Australia on Dec. 27, 2025, following an alleged altercation with a 29-year-old woman at a Sydney-area apartment complex the previous day. He was charged with three domestic violence-related offenses: assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentionally choking a person without consent and common assault, according to New South Wales Police.

He told Rolling Stone that he’s “made mistakes” and has “evidence” that shows his side of the story. “I don’t believe the public has heard the full story surrounding what happened,” he said. “What has been publicly reported, however, represents only one side of what was an extremely complicated situation.”

Fans don’t seem to be ready to wait for the full story—or at least not yet. “I really really really rooted for Nathan until the news came out and now i just want him off my screen,” one person posted on Threads.

Others accused Gallagher of victim-blaming and questioned how there could be exceptions when it comes to assault. “He was already shaping up to be the villain this season before all of this,” one person wrote on X.

Gallagher has already struggled to find his footing this season while juggling new parenthood with the demands of being a bosun. He also began the season at odds with former close friend and fellow deckhand Joe Bradley, with the pair’s once-close bromance seemingly a thing of the past.

In an interview with Parade, Joe said his friendship with Nathan has certainly fizzled.

“I know who Nathan is; I know what he’s capable of,” Joe said. “Would I like to beat it in the butt? I would, but I wouldn’t share the dinner at the same dinner table.”

Joe also accused Nathan of having “such a hatred” toward him, adding, “I’m going to use the word hate because you can see it in his eyes that he didn’t want me there.” He continued, “But him using the words how I’ve been treating women, well, I can say a few things about Nathan, how he’s treated women and it’s not very healthy, but that’s another story.”

Allie Colleen — the daughter of country music icon Garth Brooks and ex Sandy Mahl — shared a tribute after the death of Dollly Parton. However, many took issue with her words

“My greatest fear in life is the day my Dad loses his life and I have to see the world mourn a man they never knew the way I knew him,” Allie shared via Instagram on Tuesday, August 25. “To the personal family and friends of Mrs. Dolly, you have all my love and condolences today and forever going forward.”

She continued, “What a huge, beautiful, special life to have loved and to grieve. Thank you for sharing her will us all.”

While many understood where the famous offspring sentiment, others shared a different perspective.

“We will mourn the loss, never in the way you will. Just know that all of us may have gone through that before and we will understand your pain,” one fan commented on Allie’s post.

Allie responded, “I don’t think you will.. I would never relate to you losing your father – I don’t know how you would relate to mine. Kind of exactly what I am talking about 💜.”

Another follower replied, “That’s kinda insinuating like none of us have loved our dads as much as you love yours? Loss is loss. Everyone who has experienced it can relate.”

“Yes they couldn’t grieve like you are for your own father but they can definitely understand it,” a third noted.

A fourth follower commented, “Maybe I’m confused? How is this a good way of putting it? No one is allowed to be sad except the family? That’s wild.” Prompting Allie to reply, “This is my account— I am saying I don’t know how to respond to these things in my industry because of my life experiences. I’m not telling anyone else how to grieve. I’m just acknowledging the family. You do you babe.”

Despite her pushback from fans, Allie received support from another country music offspring.

“I’m more of an avoidant when it comes to fears like this. But that is very very scary and real for my sisters and I. Thank you for explaining it better than I could,” Mackenzie Lynn Adkins, the daughter of singer Trace Adkins and Rhonda Forlow, wrote.

Allie responded, “I know you understand babe 💜 should the day come— we’ll get through it.”

Legendary rock singer Shirley Manson has enjoyed a successful music career that spans more than three decades. Today, Aug. 26, 2026, the Scottish frontwoman celebrates a personal milestone as she turns 60 years old.

Born Aug. 26, 1966, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Manson’s professional singing career started in 1984, per Songwriting Magazine, when she performed in the Scottish rock band Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie as a keyboardist and backing singer. In the early ’90s, she co-founded Angelfish with her Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie bandmates before going on to become the lead singer of the iconic rock band Garbage.

“What happened was the three male members of Garbage had been looking for a singer and apparently, unbeknownst to me, they had approached a whole bunch of other people, but I didn’t know about this,” Manson, who was nicknamed the “Grandmother of Rock” by the New York Times, told Songwriting Magazine of the audition process. “They had tracked me down in Scotland because Steve Marker, one of the guitarists in Garbage, had seen my band Angelfish perform on MTV at one o’clock in the morning, and he liked my voice. So he suggested to the others that they track me down, and that’s exactly what they did, and they managed to do it within 24 hours.”

Garbage’s fan-favorite hit, “#1 Crush,” which featured on the soundtrack of the 1996 movie William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart in 1997, where it stayed on top for four weeks.

Dolly Parton leaves behind an incredible trove of classic songs, including “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “Here You Come Again.” But out of her entire body of work, one song stood out to Parton as her proudest achievement: her heartwarming ode to her childhood, “Coat of Many Colors.” 

“Well, I’m proud of all of them,” Parton shared in a 2024 interview with The Guardian. “I think the one that’s most personal to me is the lil’ ‘Coat of Many Colors,’ because it talks about my mom, my parents, and kind of gives you an insight. It also covers bullying, acceptance, and all that.”

Written solely by Parton and produced by Bob Ferguson for her 1971 album of the same name — which featured a photo of her as a child on the front cover — the autobiographical track serves as a poignant reflection of her rags-to-riches story. 

Raised as one of 12 children in a one-room cabin in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, Parton sings of the coat her mother sewed for her out of a box of old rags. Though her schoolmates ridiculed her for wearing the patched-up jacket, she held fast to the biblical story of Joseph that her mother taught her, believing the coat was worth more than any other clothing from the store. 

Though not a No. 1 hit, “Coat of Many Colors” achieved significant success, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Parton famously scribbled the lyric on a dry-cleaning receipt while riding Porter Wagoner’s tour bus, a detail noted in her 1994 autobiography, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business. The song was later ranked at No. 46 on Rolling Stone’s 2024 list of “The 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time.” 

Uniquely, “Coat of Many Colors” also appeared on Parton’s 1975 album titled Best of Dolly Parton, which featured a missing unrecorded verse printed inside the gatefold cover. But beyond music,  “Coat of Many Colors” expanded into other media.

Parton, who founded the Imagination Library book-gifting program, turned the story into a HarperCollins children’s book illustrated by Judith Sutton. The track also inspired a 2015 NBC television movie, Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors.

Dollywood will be missing its “Dreamer-in-Chief,” but the heart of the park isn’t going anywhere.

One day after Dolly Parton’s death at age 80, Dollywood Parks & Resorts President and CEO Eugene Naughton spoke directly to fans concerned about what her passing could mean for the Tennessee theme park she helped build.

“This is a really heavy day for all of us here at Dollywood Parks and Resorts,” Naughton said in an Instagram video shared Wednesday, August 26. “We’ve been dealing with the news of our dreamer in chief, passing, and I want to speak directly to you to make sure you realize that she’s alive and well here.”

Naughton then addressed one of the biggest questions surrounding Dollywood’s future. “I know a lot of people are concerned that things are going to change without Dolly being present here, and I want to assure you that it’s not,” he said.

Instead, Naughton said the team intends to preserve the values Parton instilled in the park, encouraging people to “show kindness,” “love big” and “dream big.”

“Don’t be afraid to care more about others because that’s exactly what we’re gonna do cause that’s exactly what she’d want us to do,” he added, concluding, “The show must go on.”

Fans praised Naughton’s message and honesty amid Parton’s death.

“What stands out here is what makes Dolly and Dollywood different. This was from the heart. Not a cue card ran by execs, just speaking naturally and honestly and from the heart, and putting it out there. We need more of this.,” one shared in the comments.

Parton’s death was announced by her nephew Bryan Seaver in an emotional Instagram video. The news came just days after the country legend provided an update on ongoing health issues, saying that although she was “still healin’,” she was also “still workin’.”

The world feels a little quieter without Dolly Parton in it.

The country legend’s signature song climbed to No. 1 on Apple Music’s U.S. songs chart as fans returned to her music following her death on Tuesday, August 25. Parton was 80 at the time of her death.

The renewed interest extended across her catalog, placing several of her best-known recordings among the platform’s most-played songs.

The Real Story Behind Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”

Parton released “Jolene” on Monday, October 15, 1973, as the lead single from her 13th studio album of the same name.

The singer said she drew inspiration from a red-haired bank employee who appeared unusually interested in her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, according to The New York Times.

Parton transformed that moment of jealousy into a vulnerable appeal to another woman. Rather than attacking the song’s title character, Parton’s narrator praises her beauty and admits she fears she cannot compete with her.

That emotional honesty helped the recording transcend country music and connect with generations of listeners. Rolling Stone placed “Jolene” at No. 63 on its revised 2021 ranking of the 500 greatest songs ever recorded, according to Genius.

“Jolene” Inspired Famous Covers Across Generations

Artists from several genres have reinterpreted the song during the past 50 years. Parton performed it with her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, during Dollywood’s 25th-anniversary celebration in July 2010.

Their energetic performances introduced the classic to a younger audience and became online fan favorites. According to Parton’s official website, Pentatonix’s 2016 recording featuring Parton won the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

The recognition gave Parton her first Grammy win for the song, after her earlier solo versions received two nominations. Beyoncé also reimagined “Jolene” for her 2024 album Cowboy Carter, rewriting parts of the story while preserving its instantly recognizable foundation.

Parton died following a brief battle with cancer, her representatives confirmed. Her death prompted tributes from musicians, actors, world leaders and fans who grew up with her songs. Landmarks were illuminated in her signature pink, while flowers covered her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The success of “Jolene” offers another measure of Parton’s reach. More than 50 years after its release, the song is finding new listeners while longtime fans turn to a familiar voice in their grief.

Country music legend Dolly Parton, who has died at the age of 80, wrote, recorded, and released countless hits since the ’60s. The publication Collider recently narrowed down some of her very best works with a ranking of “the 10 greatest Dolly Parton songs of all time.”

The list, published on August 26, included beloved Parton songs like “Here You Come Again” from 1977, 1982’s “Islands in the Stream,” “9 to 5,” released in 1980, and 1971’s “Coat of Many Colors.” According to Collider, the very best song by Parton is 1973’s “Jolene,” the first track off her 1974 album also titled Jolene.

The Grammy-nominated song secured the number 60 Billboard Hot 100 spot in March 1974, five months after the tune was released as a single.

Dolly Parton Shared Why She Believed ‘Jolene’ Continued to Resonate With Fans in a 2013 Interview

In a 2013 interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Parton gave some insight into writing “Jolene.” According to the musician, a woman working in a bank took some interest in her husband, Carl Dean, who died at the age of 82 in 2025, when they were first married.

“She got a big crush on him, and I think he kind of had a crush on her. I know he was spending more time in the bank than we had money. So I called him on it, and so I just kind of took that little bit of, you know, like that other woman kind of thing,” said Parton, who married Dean in 1966.

She then theorized why “Jolene” has continued to resonate with listeners.

“Every woman can relate to it and every man really. I think women love it because I think we all know that there’s somebody out there that could turn the head of the person that you love,” said Parton during the 2013 interview. “I think everybody has that fear, and it happens all the time.”

Can you believe it’s the 40th anniversary of Phantom of the Opera this year? This is a story that has become part of our culture and our hearts, and to mark its 40th anniversary, Andrew Lloyd Webber wanted to do something extra special.

We know the Phantom’s story. The Angel of Music tells us his tale throughout the stage production, and it’s something that continues to touch hearts and minds. What about the story of Christine, though?

She is an essential part of the whole tale, but we only really see her side of the story through the Angel’s eyes. We don’t see some of the decisions that Christine has to make when it comes to her heart, her life, and her career, and so, sometimes, the decisions can feel a little off and disappointing.

So, Webber and his team decided it was time to tell that story, and who better to tell it than Erin A. Craig, an author already known for her fairy tale retellings? She already knows how to write in the world of gothic fantasy, and Craig has a background in theater. 

“It was such an honor and responsibility,” Craig told Parade in an exclusive interview, “and slightly nerve-wracking, because it is something that touches so many people’s hearts.” She went on to share how everyone has a core memory of Phantom of the Opera, whether it’s the first time they saw a production on the screen or stage, or just the first time they heard the music playing.

“I fell in love with the show when I was about 13 years old,” she went on to discuss her love for Phantom of the Opera specifically. “I was a very sporty kid in junior high. I had never really seen a live theater show before, and I was in band class, and they handed out the new music for the week, and it was Phantom of the Opera Melody Suite. I knew nothing about the show, and our teacher told us briefly about it, and he’s like, ‘All right, let’s start sight-reading.’”

This was to a group of kids in the eighth grade who were not the best musicians at all, but as the overture notes played, Craig knew that she needed to know more, and it led her down a rabbit hole of Opera. She would check out CDs, VHS copies of Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford’s iconic performance, and much more. It became her obsession, and that one moment led to a career in the theater.

When Craig moved on to writing, she thought she was leaving theater behind her. After all, her fairy tale retellings were another world, and yet, she was pulled back into Opera with her upcoming novel, Our Strange Duet, and it all came about because of Webber and his team looking for a way to celebrate the epic milestone of 40 years.

“They decided they wanted to do a YA Christine version of Phantom, and so they had talked with my editor and publisher at Delacorte Press, and they were like, ‘You know, we want to get somebody who gets the story,’ and she was like, “We’ve got an author who really likes Gothic romance, and this is her sweet spot. I think she was in theater before.’”

Retelling Christine’s story was never going to be easy. As Craig said, and as we all know, Phantom of the Opera is such an iconic story that it’s difficult to recreate the other side of it. However, Christine deserves to have her story told. Too many women come off as damsels in distress, but Christine had to make some difficult choices to follow her dreams — dreams at one point she didn’t even know she would have.

“We had such a rich source of material with Fabrian of the Libretto and the Joel Schumacher movie. Lloyd Webber Entertainment has been so lovely and given me a ton of archival recordings of past shows. I’ve digested all of that and started to go through the key scenes that fans of Phantom can’t do without, like the chandelier falling.”

Our Strange Duet tells the story purely from Christine’s POV, exploring her life before the stage, before she’s a prima donna. This allows us to follow her during moments that aren’t possible in the original production, as she’s not in the manager’s office or always on the stage. There are a lot of questions about where she is, while offering layers to her character.

Some elements of Christine’s story can often be overlooked, such as her start in ballet, something she didn’t train for in 1890s France. There were so many other directions she could have gone in, but she joined the ballerinas, and it showed that flicker of ambition she would later prove to have at the opera.

“We get to flesh out the relationships she has, not only with the Phantom and Raul, but [with] Meg, Carlotta, and Madame Giry, and get to see how fervently she loves everyone around her, and not just romantically, but just as a platonic best friend. She cares so much about the Opera Company.”

Everything happens fast in a musical, and that’s the way it has to be to tell a story in just a few hours. Yet, a novel has more time and space to breathe, and that’s something Our Strange Duet brings to the table.

“It can feel really wishy-washy as you’re going through the music,” Craig admitted, “To have the chance to be squarely in her head and seeing why she does all of what she does, it was just so delicious.”

For those who don’t know much about Phantom of the Opera, there is still a reason to read Our Strange Duet. There are elements of the story that even Phantom fans have no idea about, such as rehearsals and Christine’s backstory. Think about how Hannibal fans didn’t need to know anything about The Silence of the Lambs to understand it all. Of course, there are Easter eggs, but there is a much bigger story to tell that opens the world up to everyone, and maybe it will bring in new fans to this 40-year-old production.

There are even tropes that offer something for romance lovers to enjoy. After all, there’s a bit of a love triangle in there with Raul and the Phantom. In fact, it was the love triangle that caused a little bit of a problem, as Craig has always been Team Phantom, but at the end of the production, Christine chooses Raul — maybe a bit of a spoiler, but this story has been out for 40 years!

“It was really fun to get into Christine’s head and see the good in Raul,” Craig admitted. “He is very lovely…[The Phantom] scratches that creative itch…He understands and challenges her. It’s a kind of symbiotic relationship that they have going on.”

So, how do you then find a reason for Christine to choose Raul? Craig shared, “But then Raul, conversely, offers this wonderful sense of safety and security, even more than just the title and the money…He was alive when her father was last alive. They met on the beach in Dover, and he went and got the red scarf, and he had dinner with her dad. He was in those happy, healthy days.”

After looking at it like that, there were some sparkle points given to Raul. There became a psychological reason for Christine to be pulled to this man, and it’s not like he’s a terrible person. He’s a good man with a heart. In fact, he’s a better person than the Phantom in that regard, considering there are a few deaths on the Phantom’s hands.

To end the interview, we chatted about the cover of Our Strange Duet, created by Lisa Quinn, which is an absolutely gorgeous piece of art in its own right. The front cover puts the focus on the flowers that denote Christine, with the iconic mask further in the background to show that this is no longer his story. Craig noted, “All these beautiful feminine flowers and all the gold, foiled little swirls, and everything coming out from under the mask; it just made such an impact, because I was like, ‘Yes, this is Christine’s story coming out from under the Phantom’s mask.’”

The final copy wouldn’t be complete without the beautiful sprayed edges that have Christine front and center. Inside, we get the artwork of the boat that is one of the most monumental parts of the entire production, and Raul is in the background to highlight the choice. We also can’t forget the ribbon — no bookmarks needed! — that brings us back to an age of classic literature.

She also has more books in the works. Fans of her Sisters of the Salt series will be happy to hear there’s another book coming, and this time, it’s focused on Lenore. Those who are ready for another adult novel will want to look out for a release in fall 2027 — at least, that’s a rough timeline. Craig is venturing out of her retelling comfort zone and getting into a thriller, which even has a book within a book!

Our Strange Duet is something for Phantom of the Opera fans for sure, but it’s also a Gothic romance that is perfect for fans of Craig’s previous books, like House of Salt and Sparrows and Small Favors. Releasing on Sept. 1, 2026, this is the perfect start to fall and to get ready for spooky season.

When you think of Princess Diana, words like elegance, grace, and sophistication come to mind. That’s why some might be shocked to learn one of her favorite movies was The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris back in 1997, but the more breaking news is that The Rocky Horror Picture Show leading man Tim Curry has died at age 80 after years of health struggles following a debilitating stroke in 2012, which left him using a wheelchair during public appearances.

Curry’s talents weren’t bound to the big screen; he had ample roles on Broadway and beyond, including one production across the pond that led to a memorable meeting with Princess Diana herself — and he was shocked to learn just how big a fan she already was.

During a CBS interview, Curry revealed that he met the Princess of Wales and her then-husband, now-King Charles, when the Royal National Theatre took its production of Love for Love to Vienna, where the royal couple were VIP guests.

Surprised she recognized him, Curry humbly told Diana, “I don’t suppose you saw it,” referring to his risqué cult classic.

Not only had she seen it, Curry recalled that Rocky Horror was why Diana wanted to meet him in the first place. “Of course I did,” she replied, quipping, “It quite completed my education.”

For a movie once considered so outrageous that audiences famously showed up to midnight screenings in costume, having one of the world’s most famous royals among its admirers was perhaps one of the more unexpected stamps of approval Curry could receive.

Decades later, The Rocky Horror Picture Show remains Curry’s most iconic role, but his surprising encounter with the People’s Princess adds another memorable chapter to the legacy he leaves behind.

When R.J. Decker returns with new episodes this fall, the season premiere will be a crossover episode with Dancing with The Stars pros Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy as well as Season 33 Len Goodman Mirrorball champion Joey Graziadei, also of The Bachelor fame.

In the trailer for the new season below, Scott Speedman, who stars as RJ Decker, crosses paths with Jenna, Val and Joey as he tries to solve a series of bank heists.

R.J. Decker is a former newspaper photographer, who was framed for a crime and is now out on parole, working as a private investigator. Set in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida, the series follows Decker tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife, his former cellmate turned confidant and the woman whose testimony sent him to prison.

The cast also includes costars Jaina Lee Ortiz as Emilia “Emi” Ochoa, Bevin Bru as Detective Melody “Mel” Abreu, Kevin Rankin as Aloysius “Wish” Aiken, and Adelaide Clemens as Catherine Delacroix. 

R.J. Decker returns on Tuesday, September 15, at 10 p.m. on ABC. Streams next day on Hulu.
