One bite of Zuma’s Miso Black Cod might have you wondering what every other restaurant is doing wrong when it comes to cooking fish.

Zuma has been around since 2002, launching its first location in London, where the Miso Black Cod became one of the signature dishes that has followed the chic Japanese hotspot around the world, drawing celebrity clientele along the way.

Most recently, Zuma opened its first California location in San Diego, while its seasonal Gstaad pop-up in Switzerland returns this winter.

Next on the docket is its Cabo launch, cutting the blue ribbon on Nov. 5 at Cabo Del Sol’s Ánima Village, near some of the region’s most posh resorts, including the Four Seasons Resort Cabo Del Sol and Park Hyatt Cabo Del Sol.

Zuma will continue to serve dishes from its three signature kitchens—the main kitchen, sushi counter and robata grill—along with plenty of sake, but there will also be three new dishes exclusive to Cabo as the culinary team puts its heads together to weave local flavors and culture into each new location.

For Cabo, that means putting a Baja-inspired spin on the Zuma experience with three dishes created specifically for the new location:

• Lobster Shimofuri: Served with shiso chile dashi and crispy ginger.
• Crispy Nori Grouper: Paired with tomato-jalapeño relish, baby gem and wasabi mayo.
• Robata Corn and Milk Caramel Flan: Finished with husk chantilly, mochi and miso sablé.

Foodies are already flocking to Cabo for its incredible spread of upscale eats, including 21 Michelin-recognized restaurants as of August 2026.

Zuma Cabo will have to earn its own recognition, but it certainly has some Michelin pedigree behind it, with several of the brand’s locations around the world already featured in the Michelin Guide.

The Cabo treatment doesn’t stop with the menu, either.

The new location will feature ocean-facing terraces, a bar overlooking the mountains and native Baja landscaping, while locally sourced materials will help bring a little more Mexico into Zuma’s distinctive sleek design.

And there will be a DJ booth carved from a four-meter natural tree trunk, adding music to the mix as dinner gives way to an epic Cabo sunset.

Not a bad backdrop for a carafe of sake or a handcrafted Japanese Margarita as the evening unfolds.

So your child came home with a good report card, and you tell them how smart they are. Or, maybe they showed you a picture they drew, and you tell them how artistic they are. Many parents who want to raise a happy kid or a confident kid will regularly give them compliments. That makes sense: You want to build the child up and show them kindness. Words of affirmation are a quick and easy way to do so. Plus, they’re just generally important and meaningful. 

Here’s the nuance: Giving children constant praise (especially certain types of adoration, which we’ll explain below) isn’t necessarily the right answer. While it may feel helpful and effective—and while it may be, especially short-term—psychologists agree that the long-term effects don’t look so promising. Philosophers also taught this thousands of years ago, and they had a point. 

Stoic philosophy, or Stoicism, is all about making us more resilient, virtuous and wise. While it might sound ancient, you can trust it’s relevant today—and to this topic. Parade asked a psychologist to weigh in on Stoic philosophy, how it pertains to raising kids without constantly praising them and the best way to support them. You may be surprised (and definitely grateful) after reading her insights.

Why Too Much Praise Creates External Validation-Seeking Kids

To be clear, praising your child isn’t inherently a bad thing. What really matters is what the applause looks like.

“When all or most of the praise you give your child is based on something they did, it can cause the child to link your approval to a specific outcome,” explains Dr. Amy Marschall, PsyD, a licensed psychologist and consultant with Mentavi Health who works primarily with children and adolescents (and who majored in philosophy).

This can lead to several concerns, she continues, such as kids having perfectionistic tendencies, basing their value on their productivity or feeling like love and affection must be earned.

Overpraising and praising in the “wrong” ways can become a “praise trap,” too, in which kids are rewarded for things they can’t control. Then, they begin to need praise for specific outcomes.

Additionally, praise can skew a child’s perception and make future tasks more difficult or distressing. Dr. Marschall uses the example of giving a child a worksheet that you think will challenge them, but they actually find easy. 

“The adult says something like, ‘Wow, you worked really hard on that! That was a difficult task, and you did it!’” she explains. “Now, the child associates that level of effort with something being difficult, and may struggle more when they are faced with something that actually challenges them.”

What Ancient Stoics Got Right About External Validation

Marcus Aurelius was a Stoic philosopher and the author of Meditations. He believed that neither praise nor blame can change something’s true value.

“Everything which is in any way beautiful is beautiful in itself, and terminates in itself, not having praise as part of itself,” he’s quoted as saying. “[What] is beautiful because it is praised, or spoiled by being blamed?”

Like other Stoics, he found that praise had no value.

This connects to more modern psychology, such as the concept of a “fixed mindset” versus a “growth mindset,” and how it can affect a child’s development. Basically, we want kids to keep trying and focus on what they can control.

The Stoics also believe that praise can make a person vulnerable to manipulation and external control, which goes back to the “praise trap” phenomenon.

“Stoicism is the philosophical worldview that we can only control our own thoughts and behaviors, and it is futile to try and control things outside of that,” Dr. Marschall explains. “In the context of praise-seeking, Stoicism would caution against being reliant on praise from others for your sense of self or for positive reinforcement.”

Basically, she continues, if a person’s well-being relies on someone else’s approval, they aren’t in control. Plus, they’re changing who they are to appease someone else.

Praise the Process, Not the Person: The Stoic Growth Mindset

Philosophers Epictetus and Aurelius had Stoic views that connect with much of today’s modern psychology. Essentially, they encourage focusing on effort, good character and making wise choices.

For example, Marcus Aurelius encouraged people to: 

• Ask themselves if what they’re doing or feeling is necessary.
• Remember that it’s not the event that upsets us, but our judgments about it.
• Anticipate annoyances so they can meet them with grace.
• Remember people do “wrong” because they misunderstand, so gently guide them rather than take offense.

Epictetus shared messages like this:

• You must care for your body and mind.
• Everyone has a “role” to play, and they need to focus on “playing” their role.

Sound familiar, perhaps from a parent or therapy session? These beliefs are also found in modern-day therapies. For example, cognitive-behavioral therapy suggests that an activating event leads to a belief, and the belief is what leads to a consequence—much like Aurelius’s assertion. Additionally, dialectical behavior therapy has a skill called “cope ahead,” similar to that third bullet. (Sorry, I’m a therapist!) 

More informally, Epictetus’s messages might remind you of buzzwords like “self-care” or the phrase, “Stay in your lane.”

Those messages can be summed up with this key Stoic belief: Develop a positive sense of self outside of external praise. With that said, parents can still praise their kids.

“When it comes to raising kids, though, focusing on effort over outcome can teach kids that they can overcome challenges and do hard things,” Dr. Marschall clarifies. “It focuses on helping them grow rather than praising things that are not in their control, which can improve effort and confidence.”

Applying the Dichotomy of Control to Child Development

The core lesson from Epictetus and Stoics on focusing on what you can control ties in well with child development. Kids can control some things—such as their effort, attitude and virtues—but not other things, such as people’s opinions, winning and grades. It’s important they understand that.

This is the “dichotomy of control.” In therapy sessions, you might have heard this referred to as the “circle of control.”

By helping kids focus on what they can control, they can make productive, meaningful change in their lives without unnecessary worry.

“Children are still learning about what they do and do not control, and we want to teach them that their choices matter without overwhelming them with a sense that everything is their responsibility,” Dr. Marschall says. “Helping them recognize what they have a choice over, and giving them small choices whenever this is possible, can help them develop this skill.” 

She shares examples of messages to communicate:

• I can’t control if someone wants to be my friend, but I can control that I use kind words. 
• I can’t control if it will rain on my birthday, but I can control my attitude about it. 
• I can’t control what grade my teacher will give me, but I can control that I studied and tried my hardest.

“We don’t want to teach the child to suppress their feelings, but help them make choices to regulate in healthy ways,” Dr. Marschall adds.

4 Stoic Strategies To Replace ‘Good Job!’ in Everyday Parenting

Rather than throwing a simple “good job” at your child, Dr. Marschall shares some Stoic-inspired praise strategies.

1. Focus on effort over outcome. It’s okay to fall short—trying is most important.
2. Emphasize character. Help children learn who they are and what an action or behavior says about their character. For example, continuing to try shows resilience, and helping someone shows kindness.
3. Lead with curiosity. Rather than assuming negative intent, ask your child what their thought process was. Their “bad” behavior might have understandable underlying logic.
4. Praise their response to difficulty, and be specific. Kids may feel confused when you say “good job” after they didn’t achieve the result they wanted. What can help is pointing out what they did and what it showed, such as resilience or effort, so they know what to keep practicing.

Seneca’s Golden Rule: Balancing High Expectations With Emotional Safety

To really be effective, don’t forget to adhere to Stoic philosopher Seneca’s golden rule: Have high expectations for your kids, and provide emotional safety. That gives them the comfort and confidence to meet your expectations.

In practice, that might look like:

• Showing them how to address problems rather than just “saving” them
• Teaching rather than punishing
• Allowing for a balance of work and relaxation

Essentially, it’s the balance of raising a child who is confident but not arrogant, hardworking but not overworked and comfortable but not spoiled. It’s about helping them learn and encouraging them to try.

In the 1980s, Danny Pintauro was a star on one of the biggest shows on television, the ABC sitcom Who’s the Boss?. After eight seasons on the show, the young actor took a 10-year break from acting and lived out his childhood dream.

During an October 2026 appearance on the Tamron Hall Show, Pintauro, 50, explained his decision to leave  Hollywood following the end of Who’s the Boss?.

“I disappeared, and I worked as everything,” he shared, “I was a vet technician, which was like a lifelong dream. … What was so amazing about that time is I got to literally be just nobody and figure out what it meant to walk into somewhere and not have everyone know who I was. I could finally just say, ‘Who is this person?’ Rather than, ‘Who was I created to be?’”

Pintauro was just eight years old when he landed the role as Jonathan Bower on Who’s The Boss?, which also starred Tony Danza, Judith Light, Katherine Helmond and Alyssa Milano. After the hit comedy series ended in 1992, Pintauro left Los Angeles and didn’t take on another credited acting role until appearing in The Still Life in 2006.

The former child actor told the Austin American-Statesman that he did a variety of jobs or “gigs” over the years but that the vet tech job in Austin, Texas was especially rewarding.

“As a very young kid, this is literally what I wanted to do when I grew up,” he said in 2019. “Even though I was on TV, every summer I would work at this vet office near my house in LA and clean kennels or whatever they would let me do. I loved it.”

Pintauro added that he didn’t like “the business” of being an actor.  “I always used to say when you sit in a windowsill and you think about your life, and you think about everything you love to do, it wasn’t acting for me,” he explained. “Especially for me being a gay child celebrity, it just wasn’t worth it.”

Pintauro had a change of tune about acting after he watched an episode of  Star Trek” Discovery that featured a married gay couple.

“We’ve come a long way since I last tried to be an actor, and it just sort of clicked that I finally felt ready to try again,” he told Yahoo Entertainment in April.

The actor revealed that he quit his job as a vet tech and moved back to L.A. with his husband Wil Tabares.

Today, Pintauro juggles multiple gigs while auditioning for acting roles. He told Hall he makes mini “book nooks” that he autographs and sells, and he also teaches acting to kids.

In addition, in April, Pintauro shared an Instagram post that showed him hard at work as an Amazon Flex driver.

“The entertainment business has been soooo slow, so I’ve been doing what a lot of people do — figuring it out, showing up, and taking the work that’s there while I keep building the work I really want. 38 packages today: Pintauro captioned the photo. “There’s no shame in staying in motion.”

After sailing on over 100 cruises in my life, I’ve learned what you actually need to bring with you at sea and what you can leave at home.

I often see people boarding ships with full suitcases, and I know that they aren’t going to use half of what they brought. In the interest of trying to keep my travel as easy as possible (from embarking the ship itself, to flying, and everything in between) I find that packing just a carry-on and a personal item is the best way to go.

This upcoming week, I’ll be sailing on a transatlantic voyage on the Queen Mary 2 from New York City to Southampton. It’ll be 7 days at sea, which means: no port days, lots of elegant evenings to dress up for, smart-casual dress-code during the day, and lots of time to hit the gym. With the weather also being fall right now, this means that my clothing items will be a little bit bulkier than usual.

What you put on your body the day you travel to the ship is extremely important. I chose a pair of comfortable white slacks, a white shirt, a sweater, a jacket, and a comfortable pair of flats. The slacks will be worn multiple times throughout the trip–especially because they match with every top that I packed. The white shirt will come in handy as well, to wear by itself or with layers on top.

The sweater here is my true MVP of the trip. This singular sweater will act as my go-to layer for when it gets chilly around the ship. It’s stylish and classy looking, but it has the feel of an extremely comfortable sweatshirt. This will be perfect for when I want to cuddle up in my cabin and read a book or when I want to head to one of the lounges for a glass of wine. This specific one is the Lola Stripe Pullover from Margaret O’Leary.

Tops and Bottoms Designed for chilly North Atlantic breezes. These mix-and-match tops and bottoms easily layer under cardigans for breezy strolls on the promenade deck.

Let’s start with the bottoms. You’ll want to pack some options that can be worn both during the day and at night–that way they are multi-purpose. With that in mind, I first chose two pairs of slacks. The first pair is the one that I wore to embark the ship, and the other is a soft brown pair. Both of these feel very comfortable to wear all day long, but they also help me feel very put together. On a classy ship like the Queen Mary 2, that’s how I want to present myself. Then, to have a bit more casual options, I packed a pair of blue jeans and a pair of white and black striped jeans.

For the tops, I chose three very basic sleeveless tops that can be worn by themselves or with a layer overtop them. Then, I chose two short-sleeved sweaters, which will provide a bit more warmth but can also be layered upon. I also threw in a thin long sleeved turtleneck, which barely took up any room in my suitcase and will be great when I want to feel a bit warmer. For my extra layering pieces, I chose a black button up sweater and a fun, colorful sweater vest. Both of these can be worn alone, on top of the tops I brought, or with the evening-wear that I packed as well.

If you’re sailing onboard a luxury cruise line, you will most likely receive a schedule beforehand explaining the dress codes for each night of the cruise. On the Queen Mary 2, we will have an elegant black and white themed night as well as a masquerade night. Every other evening still requires you to adhere to a smart dress code: dresses, smart trousers, skirts–you get the drill!

I went with three dresses. One I particularly know that I’ll wear for the black and white night, and the others are options that I can dress down or up depending on the events of the evening. Then, I packed a satin skirt as well as two different bodysuits to pair with it. All together, this gives me five base outfits for the evenings. I can also add one of my layer-able tops to the dresses or skirt outfits, creating an entirely new look.

If I could share only one major packing tip, it would be that you don’t need as many shoes as you think. For most trips that I go on, I only pack three pairs of shoes. I did have to break my rule for this voyage, however, because I am planning on doing a lot of gym time–alas, my bulky Nike sneakers had to come along for the trip.

For the other shoes, I needed casual and comfortable options to wear during the day as well as during the more relaxed evenings. I chose two pairs of ballet flats. One is a leather black pair that can look very nice with an evening outfit, but can also be dressed down with a pair of socks and pants during the day. The second pair is a velvety-knit material in a warm brown color. This will be easy to put on with any of my day outfits. Finally, a pair of heels was needed for the gala evenings.

Accessories, Extras, and Neccessities The finishing touches: high impact accessories and travel essentials.

This is the part where people tend to get very overwhelmed–and trust me, I relate. Starting with your every day necessities: toiletries, makeup, and hair supplies. All of these shouldn’t take up that much room. Pair down your makeup to include only what you need. Use travel sized toiletries and skip the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The cruise ship will have those ready for you in the cabin. You don’t need to bring a blow-dryer, since that is always in any hotel or cruise ship stateroom.

After you’ve packed those into small containers that will keep them organized, move on to your undergarments and pajamas. I only wear one pair of pajamas during a trip (don’t worry, I shower right before bed!). Your underwear, socks, and bras should only take up the room of a small packing cube.

Lastly, I decided to bring a few accessories on this trip. I have a small zip-up bag with various types of jewelry to dress up my evening looks, silk scarves to elevate my looks during the day, and a shawl to throw over my shoulders in the evenings. To finish it all out, I threw in a few workout clothes and one matching sweatsuit. That suit can be worn to relax in as well as on my flight home.

If you pack all of your clothing in packing cubes and play a game of Tetris to get the rest organized, trust me, you’ll have no problem fitting everything you need in a carry-on and personal item!

RJ Mitte’s final film, Talking to Strangers, is drawing renewed attention following the actor’s tragic death at 34. 

The romantic drama, which he was promoting just days before his passing, offers another opportunity to reflect on his career and his commitment to disability representation in Hollywood.

Mitte starred as Joshua, a man with cerebral palsy who forms an unexpected connection with Marty, played by Lin Yin. 

According to the Los Angeles Times, the story follows the pair as they develop an unlikely friendship over lunch, until Marty reveals something that takes their encounter in a darker direction.

The film explores themes of connection, vulnerability and acceptance, bringing renewed attention to a performer who frequently advocated for more authentic portrayals of people with disabilities.

In a September interview with True Hollywood Talk, writer and director Johnny Severin discussed the thinking behind the project. Drawing on his background in special education, Severin said he wanted to create a story in which disability was part of a character’s life rather than the defining feature of the entire narrative.

“What was important was that this is not a movie about disability or cerebral palsy, it’s about a romance,” Severin said, describing the relationship between two people dealing with their own pain and complicated circumstances.

Mitte’s casting also connected with his best-known work on Breaking Bad. He portrayed Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, throughout the AMC drama’s five-season run. Like his character, Mitte had cerebral palsy, bringing personal experience to the role.

His work extended beyond acting. According to the Los Angeles Times, Mitte served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s and led the Mitte Foundation, supporting philanthropic initiatives and disability inclusion.

Mitte attended a screening of Talking to Strangers at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills on September 30. He also promoted the movie in a Facebook post on October 8, describing it as a film with “a little love, some comedy, and maybe even some drama,” according to Just Jared.

The film now stands among the actor’s final screen performances, adding another chapter to a career that helped bring disability representation to a wider audience.

Collin Gosselin is revealing a  disturbing account of his childhood, alleging that a teacher noticed his swollen, purple ear after his mother, Kate Gosselin, dragged him by it.

The former Jon & Kate Plus 8 star, 22, detailed the alleged incident in a new interview with Page Six on October 13, as he promotes his memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood.

According to Collin, the incident took place when he was in fourth grade. He alleged that his mother would grab his ear when she was angry and sometimes pull him across a room.

“She used to pull me and drag me across the room by my ear, which is when I went to school that one day with a swollen ear,” Collin told Page Six.

He also described the experience during an appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast. Collin recalled that a teacher noticed his injury and asked him about it before a guidance counselor became involved.

“I went to school one day after she had dragged me by my ear, and my ear was swollen and it was purple,” he said.

Collin alleged that he was eventually pulled out of school after seeking help from adults. He said he was homeschooled afterward and described the period as one of the most difficult experiences of his childhood.

The allegations are part of a broader account of his upbringing in the family featured on TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8. The series followed Kate and her then-husband, Jon Gosselin, as they raised their twins and sextuplets. Collin has claimed that the family’s public image did not reflect what he experienced behind the scenes.

In an interview with ABC News, Collin also alleged that he was isolated from his father after his parents’ divorce and was eventually placed in a behavioral health facility as a child. He has disputed his mother’s explanation for that decision.

Kate has previously rejected Collin’s characterization of their relationship. In a September 2024 statement reproduced in the Page Six report, she said Collin had received multiple psychiatric diagnoses and was admitted to a facility after years of outpatient treatment.

Between 1978 and 1995, Theodore “Ted” John Kaczynski killed three people and injured dozens more in 16 different bombings of mailboxes. Back in the late 1970s, Danny Seraphine of the rock band Chicago was working on a track based on his time growing up in the major Midwestern city. From his time in gangs to bouncing from band to band, Seraphine drew upon his real-life experiences to inspire the song that would become the iconic single, “Street Player.”

While touring with Chicago in Europe during the summer of 1978, Seraphine had the idea to reimagine “Street Player” as a disco song in the same vein as Rod Stewart’s “Do You Think I’m Sexy?” The recording became Chicago’s “answer to disco” and was heavily influenced by the music the members were listening to at the time. Featuring a trumpet solo by Maynard Ferguson, vocals by Peter Cetera, and a loop of Seraphine’s own drum parts, “Street Player” was rerecorded and released in 1979.

The band’s label, Columbia, was so excited by the track that they insisted it be included on the group’s studio album, Chicago 13.

Despite the band’s and label’s enthusiasm for the track, “Street Player” failed to chart impressively, peaking only at 91 on the Billboard US Hot Soul Singles. However, over the years, multiple other musicians and groups have ended up sampling the song in their own work, including the Bucketheads, Nicola Fasano & Pat-Rich, and Pitbull.

In 2024, Forbes put together a ranking of the “Best Disco Songs of All Time” and ranked “Street Player” at number one. Of the track, the publication wrote, “Disco isn’t a straight line and that’s why it’s beautiful. Combining the sounds of jazz, soul, gospel, electronic, dance, R&B and funk, disco is the ultimate feel-good music, guaranteed to life the spirits. This song list encompasses only a fraction of what’s out there, creating a realm of discovery for all.”

How to Play Strands

According to the New York Times, here’s exactly how to play Strands:

Find theme words to fill the board.

• Theme words stay highlighted in blue when found.
• Drag or tap letters to create words. If tapping, double-tap the last letter to submit.
• Theme words fill the board entirely. No theme words overlap.

Find the “spangram.”

• The spangram describes the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. It may be two words.
• The spangram highlights in yellow when found.
• An example spangram with corresponding theme words: PEAR, FRUIT, BANANA, APPLE, etc.

Need a hint?

• Find non-theme words to get hints.
• For every three non-theme words you find, you earn a hint.
• Hints show the letters of a theme word. If there is already an active hint on the board, a hint will show that word’s letter order.
