Hattie McDaniel, a trailblazing actress, left a lasting mark on the entertainment industry by becoming the first African American to win an Oscar in 1940.

Before her historic win, the Kansas native spent years performing as a vaudeville actress and established herself as one of the pioneering radio singers.

This led her to star in the hit radio sitcom The Beulah Show, as the voice of the titular character, Beulah.

After taking over the role in November 1947, McDaniel helped turn the show into a major hit.

Moreover, McDaniel became the first Black woman to star in her own network radio show, later reprising the role in the television sitcom of the same name.

From one major milestone to another, McDaniel continued to build her reputation as a seasoned actress and eventually joined the cast of the legendary film Gone With the Wind.

She played Mammy, the fiercely loyal, sharp-witted house servant at the Tara plantation who also served as a confidante to Scarlett O’Hara, the main character played by Vivien Leigh.

While the 1939 film became the highest-grossing film of its era and grew into a major cultural phenomenon associated with Hollywood’s Golden Age, McDaniel’s portrayal earned her a place in Oscar history.

At the 12th Academy Awards in 1940, McDaniel won Best Supporting Actress at age 44, making her the first African American to win a competitive acting Oscar.

However, the ceremony was held at the segregated Cocoanut Grove nightclub inside the Ambassador Hotel.

McDaniel and her guest were seated separately from the film’s other nominees, reflecting the racial discrimination she faced despite her historic achievement.

Despite the discrimination, the actress’s victory sparked an emotional moment. McDaniel wore a turquoise gown embellished with rhinestones and white gardenias in her hair.

“You would have had the choke in your voice that all of us had,” syndicated gossip columnist Louella Parsons said, describing the emotion that filled the room, per The Hollywood Reporter.

McDaniel, whose parents had been enslaved before emancipation, delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech, saying, “It has made me feel very, very humble and I shall always hold it as a beacon for anything I may be able to do in the future. I sincerely hope I shall always be a credit to my race and to the motion picture industry.”

Following her death from breast cancer in 1952, the award-winning actress bequeathed her Academy Award plaque to Howard University in Washington, D.C.

The award was displayed in the university’s drama department until the late 1960s, when it disappeared from the university’s premises sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s, under circumstances that remain unclear.

McDaniel’s family and supporters repeatedly asked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to provide a replacement for the actress’s missing award, but the organization initially refused because its rules restricted the issuance of duplicate awards.

It was not until October 2023 that the Academy reversed its position and agreed to provide a replacement plaque

“Hattie McDaniel was a groundbreaking artist who changed the course of cinema and impacted generations of performers who followed her. We are thrilled to present a replacement of Hattie McDaniel’s Academy Award to Howard University,” Academy Museum Director and President Jacqueline Stewart and Academy CEO Bill Kramer said in a statement, as cited by Deadline. “This momentous occasion will celebrate Hattie McDaniel’s remarkable craft and historic win.”

Ella Langley has responded after Riley Green made a comment on The Voice that had some fans believing he was trying to take credit for her success. 

During an Instagram Live on Thursday, Oct. 8, the 27-year-old country superstar answered fan questions. When one fan asked, “When Riley Green took credit for your success on The Voice, did that rub you the wrong way?” Langley weighed in.

“Yeah, when that man took credit, no, [I] didn’t love that,” Langley said, responding in the Live that has since been shared on TikTok while getting hair and makeup done.

“But typical,” she added, emphasizing her feelings about the comment, “Typical. Pretty typical.”

Langley’s reaction comes after a recent episode of The Voice, which saw Green, 37, the sing-off show’s newest coach, building the final members of his Season 30 team. While sharing his coaching advice and trying to persuade sister country duo, Ferryn and Brinkley Wright, to join his team, the “Worst Way” singer brought up his working relationship with Langley, recalling a time when she once opened for him on tour. (Langley opened for Green in 2024 on his Ain’t My Last Rodeo tour).

“I’ve had some success with duets,” he said, referencing his collaborations on “You Look Like You Love Me” and “Don’t Mind If I Do” with Langley. 

“There was a girl that reminded me a lot of y’all. I took her on tour with me; her name’s Ella Langley. She’s doing pretty well,” he added, as shown in the TikTok clip below.

Green’s comments sparked mixed reactions, with some viewers feeling as though he was taking credit for Langley’s success, while others jumped to his defense for various reasons, as shown on X. 

It’s unclear whether or not Langley was just playing into the back-and-forth banter she and Green may have as former tour mates. The comment, according to Taste of Country, also comes after fans apparently noted that the “Choosin’ Texas” hitmaker doesn’t follow Green on Instagram, despite him being a follower of hers.

Jeremy Wade, the daring British outdoorsman who practically brought some of the world’s modern-day dinosaurs into your living room, disappointed diehard fans in 2017 when “River Monsters” came to an end after nine seasons.

Citing the simple fact that there were essentially no more fish to catch—at least of the Jurassic-looking variety—Wade opted to hang up his rod rather than force the show to continue.

“Some shows can run forever, but our subject matter is finite,” Wade explained when the final season was announced. “10 years ago, I had a list in my head, which seemed impossibly ambitious at the time, but everything has now been ticked off—and then some.”

But that was then, and this is now.

Wade stunned fans on Monday by announcing a major return nearly a decade after his biggest show ended, simply stating: “I’m back.”

The 70-year-old angler is diving back into the world of “River Monsters” with “Fish On! With Jeremy Wade,” a new 20-episode video podcast that will reunite Wade with longtime friend and former collaborator Scott Tankard.

And this isn’t simply Wade sitting behind a microphone talking about the good ol’ days.

The pair will revisit some of the extraordinary catches, near misses and lingering mysteries from “River Monsters,” while some members of the original crew will join them to reveal behind-the-scenes insights and previously unreleased stories from their adventures.

“People tend to ask about the biggest fish or the closest I’ve come to being killed,” Wade said in announcing the project. “Some of these questions have a fairly short answer. But some stories can take a bit longer.”

Nearly a decade after “River Monsters” ended, the show is still a hit, drawing in a new generation of viewers online.

According to ITV Studios, “River Monsters” content has racked up more than 1.74 billion views across social video channels over the past year alone, averaging 4.77 million views per day.

“Fish On! With Jeremy Wade” launches exclusively for Patreon members Oct. 20 before becoming publicly available Oct. 27 on YouTube, Spotify and podcast platforms.

Over 50 years ago, folk legend Gordon Lightfoot scored his only #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with the beautiful heartbreak ballad “Sundown.” Now, the song is back in the spotlight thanks to the new Netflix thriller Below…and fans can’t get enough.

For those who haven’t tuned in yet, Below is a six-episode series starring Josh Hartnett which tells the harrowing tale of how “a small Canadian town is the target of a sea creature, and the terrorized residents will have to find the strength to fight back to protect their community and a vanishing way of life,” per the Netflix website.

In the second episode of the series, titled “Crown and Anchor,” Lightfoot’s “Sundown” plays during a pivotal scene involving a Portuguese fisherman (no spoilers here, don’t worry!). As the comments on the official YouTube video of “Sundown” prove, the musical moment served as a welcome reminder to Lightfoot fans about the beloved track.

“Came here because of the Netflix show Below,” wrote one person.

“Same lol forgot about this old classic,” added a second fan, with another noting, “Just heard it there too! Brought me way back to my young days outside of Chicago.”

“Thanks to Below on Netflix, I’ve found this gem!” raved someone who was just discovering “Sundown.”

“Same,” agreed another new listener, adding, “Such a darn good tune!! The music director for that show did a great job. Tons of hidden gems.”

As Lightfoot recalled during a 2008 interview with American Songwriter, “Sundown” accomplished quite a feat when it topped the charts.

“I just remember once that we knocked Paul McCartney out of first place with ‘Sundown,'” Lightfoot said. (He wasn’t entirely accurate; McCartney and Wings were at #1 a few months earlier with “Band on the Run” when “Sundown” entered the charts, but by the time it peaked at #1, Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods’ “Billy, Don’t Be a Hero” was at the top.)

“He had #1 with Wings, and we pushed them back to #2,” he continued. “That’s as close as I got to catching up to those guys, because they were always there, and you always had to compete against them. I tell you, it could be discouraging. You could work and work and work and have an album come out, and all of a sudden there was a big Beatle album booming up to the top of the charts. The record company at one point tried to time my stuff, trying to schedule it so it would come out when it would have more of a chance.”

Reflecting on what made “Sundown” so popular, Lightfoot noted the “interesting harmonic passages.”

“It has a great arrangement and not too bad of a vocal,” he said. “If I was going to do it again, I’d probably try to do the vocal again. I’d do it the way Jesse Winchester does it. It comes out a little bit funkier. He’s great. I was on a roll writing a whole bunch of songs at that time, and it was one of your typical insecurity-type songs, a ‘where is my baby tonight’ kind of concept. People can relate to that. It’s that concern about not being totally in control of a given situation. I was writing a whole bunch of stuff at that time. I think my girlfriend was out with her friends one night at a bar while I was at home writing songs. I thought, ‘I wonder what she’s doing with her friends at that bar!’ It’s that kind of a feeling. ‘Where is my true love tonight? What is my true love doing?’ I guess a lot of people really do relate to that. That’s part of romance…that wondering.”

Joran van der Sloot, the Dutch man linked to the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway in 2005, pleaded guilty in October 2023 to extorting her mother, Beth Holloway and committing wire fraud. 

He is serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru for the 2010 murder of Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old Peruvian student.

The guilty plea came after van der Sloot was temporarily extradited from Peru to the United States in June 2023 to face federal charges. The case focused on claims that he took money from Beth Holloway in exchange for information about her missing daughter’s death and the location of her remains.

In October 2023, van der Sloot admitted to the charges in a federal court in Birmingham, Alabama. The agreement also involved sharing information about what happened to Natalee. However, questions remained about whether the information he provided could be trusted.

Natalee disappeared during a high school graduation trip to Aruba in May 2005, The New York Times reported. She was 18 years old. Her body has never been found, and an Alabama judge declared her legally dead in 2012.

The federal case against van der Sloot began with an indictment in 2010. Prosecutors accused him of trying to get $250,000 from Beth Holloway in exchange for information about her daughter.

According to the case details, Beth paid $25,000 as part of an FBI sting operation. Prosecutors said van der Sloot gave her information he knew was false. He was also accused of seeking another $225,000 after the remains were positively identified.

But the payment did not lead Beth to her daughter’s body.

Van der Sloot initially pleaded not guilty to the federal charges. That changed in October 2023, when he pleaded guilty to extortion and wire fraud.

John Q. Kelly, Beth Holloway’s lawyer, expressed concern about the deal because van der Sloot had changed his story about Natalee’s disappearance before.

“We should expect nothing less this time around,” Kelly said in an October 2023 statement. “But now he may be getting a sweetheart deal for his latest fabrication.”

The plea agreement included a commitment to share information with prosecutors about Natalee’s death. Still, Kelly questioned whether van der Sloot would tell the truth.

The case brought renewed attention to the long-running mystery surrounding Natalee’s disappearance. Despite years of investigations and public interest, her remains have not been recovered.

Natalee was visiting Aruba with classmates to celebrate their high school graduation when she disappeared on May 30, 2005. She was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot and two other young men.

Van der Sloot became a major focus of the investigation. He was arrested in connection with the case but was never charged with Natalee’s disappearance or death in Aruba.

For years, her family continued seeking answers about what happened. Her mother, Beth, also pursued legal action after authorities accused van der Sloot of using the case to obtain money from her.

In 2012, an Alabama judge declared Natalee legally dead. However, the ruling did not solve the mystery of how she died or reveal where her remains were located.

Van der Sloot’s 2023 guilty plea to extortion and wire fraud was separate from a murder conviction. Although he admitted to killing Natalee during the proceedings, he was not convicted of her murder in the United States.

Van der Sloot is now serving 28 years in Peru for the murder of Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old business student. Her death occurred in Lima on May 30, 2010, exactly five years after Natalee disappeared.

Flores was found dead in a hotel room registered to van der Sloot. He was arrested in Chile and sent to Peru to face questions about the killing.

In June 2010, van der Sloot confessed to killing Flores. He later tried to withdraw his confession, saying he had been pressured by Peruvian police. A Peruvian judge ruled that the confession was valid.

In January 2012, a court sentenced him to 28 years in prison for Flores’ murder.

His legal problems continued while he was behind bars. In January 2023, an additional 18 years were added to his Peruvian sentence for drug trafficking. That sentence was separate from the 28 years imposed for Flores’ murder.

In June 2023, Peru temporarily handed van der Sloot over to the United States so he could face the extortion and wire fraud charges. The arrangement required him to return to Peru after the American court proceedings ended.

After his guilty plea in October 2023, van der Sloot was expected to return to Peru to continue serving his sentence. His American case also resulted in a 20-year prison sentence, which was reported to run at the same time as his Peruvian sentence, subject to the terms of the agreement.

He was also ordered to pay Beth Holloway $250,100 in restitution.

In August 2026, van der Sloot reportedly asked to be moved from Challapalca prison in southern Peru, saying fellow inmates had threatened to kill him. Peruvian news outlets América TV and Canal N reported details of his request, according to NL Times.

In his petition, van der Sloot wrote: “I am the victim of psychological torture almost daily.” He also said the threats affected his mental health and extended to his family.

Van der Sloot is being held at Challapalca, a prison in a remote area of Peru known for its harsh conditions and high altitude. According to the report, the prison administration had agreed to his transfer request, but a judge still needed to approve it.

Longtime Dancing with the Stars pro Sharna Burgess, who has returned for season 35 after a five year hiatus from the show, assured fans that she’s “ok” after an attempted stunt with her celebrity partner, Bachelor alum Tyler Cameron, went terribly wrong.

Cameron shared video of the scary stunt on Friday, October 9, as a Flashback Friday post, throwing it back to the time Burgess’ life literally flashed before her eyes. In the caption, Cameron quipped, “Bringing back #flashbackfriday to when I almost killed Sharna 😅🫠”

In the video, Burgess is sporting blonde hair, so it happened before she revealed her newly-dyed red hair on September 25. With Burgess at a 45-degree angle and Cameron behind her, supporting her neck, they then attempted a corkscrew-type turn. Burgess spun around, got hit in the head by Cameron’s arm and fell to the floor. The person filming gasped in horror, asking if she just got “nailed in the face.”

Looking stunned by what just happened, Cameron was seen suggesting they get gym mats to cushion her fall if they were going to keep trying the trick. After holding her face in her hands while flat on her back, Burgess managed to pop back up, seemingly eager to keep going — but with mats, she agreed.

Fans were shocked by the video, flooding the comment section with reactions. One exclaimed, “I thought her freaking neck snapped 😧😅” while another reminded the duo, “The mirrorball is not worth dying for 🥺”

Burgess and Cameron’s partnership has clearly weathered that storm, as they’ve continued to excel in the competition to week five, ready to perform a jazz number for Super Bowl theme night.

Bryan Cranston is mourning the death of RJ Mitte, who played his son Walter White Jr. in the popular show “Breaking Bad.” Mitte died on Monday, Oct. 12, at the age of 34.

“I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight. RJ Mitte, my sweet son on Breaking Bad, has died,” Cranston wrote on Instagram. “I met him when he was only 14 years old when he was cast as Walter White Jr., a part he played with such joy and enthusiasm.Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never – ever – allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything. He met the demanding shooting schedule head on with great determination.”

“Always listening to the advice that his TV parents (Anna Gunn and myself) gave him – but being a teenager, sometimes mischievously ignoring the counsel in order to learn the hard way… He was one of the stars of a hit TV show – but still a kid. That kid was pretty raw when we started shooting the pilot in February of 2007, but little by little we watched him grow into a really fine actor. He parlayed his experience on the show to be a vocal advocate for performers with disabilities, and was the head of a philanthropic organization with a focus on helping the disabled community,” he continued. “All that promise and potential now is such a loss.”

Cranston reflected on a recent conversation he had with Mitte.

“We were texting each other just a few weeks ago – figuring out when we could meet for lunch. Cranston also shared an important message following news that Mitte’s cause of death was confirmed to be suicide.

When Ian Hunter left the iconic glam rock band Mott the Hoople, he kicked off his solo career with a song that pretty much summed up life on the road for so many ’70s rockers: “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.”

Released as the first single from Hunter’s self-titled debut solo album in 1975, “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” was written about a young groupie who got chewed up and spit out by the rock and roll party machine:

Well the times are gettin’ hard for you little girl
I’m a hummin’ and a strummin’ all over God’s world
You don’t remember when you got your last meal
And you forgot just how a woman feels

You didn’t know what rock and roll was
Until you met a drummer on the Greyhound bus
I got there in the nick of time
Before he got his hands across your state line

Hunter’s “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” wasn’t a huge hit in the U.S., though it fared better in the U.K., peaking at #14. It wasn’t until 14 years later, when American hair metal band Great White covered the song for their 1989 album…Twice Shy that the tune really blew up, hitting #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Interestingly enough, Great White planned on calling their album…Twice Shy before they even knew they were going to cover Hunter’s song, which became the biggest hit of their career.

“Our album was done, basically,” guitarist Mark Kendall told Eric Senich of Booked on Rock in 2024.

“We had enough songs, everything was fine, and then our manager came in with [‘Once Bitten, Twice Shy’] because he managed Guns N’ Roses, and I guess Izzy Stradlin, the guitar player, had showed him that song because we had an album called Once Bitten and we thought the obvious follow up should be…Twice Shy, but we didn’t know about this song and I knew nothing about Ian Hunter solo or anything like that, I just knew him from Mott the Hoople,” Kendall continued, adding, “Our manager really liked the lyrics a lot, because it was about being on the road and stuff.”

According to Kendall, the record company “wigged out” when they heard the song, because it came out “pretty good.”

“They wanted to make it the single and we thought it was okay, you know, but we didn’t know it was going to do what it did,” he said.

“Once Bitten, Twice Shy” wasn’t just a success on the charts; the video went all the way to #1 on MTV. Years later, in 2020, Gavin Edwards of the New York Times included it on his list of “15 Essential Hair Metal Videos.”

“Great White had the right look — but it didn’t have the right song,” Edwards wrote. “Bands could call in a song doctor like Desmond Child, who co-wrote ‘Dude (Looks Like a Lady)’ with Aerosmith and ‘I Hate Myself for Loving You’ with Joan Jett. Or they could take a shortcut and just cover an old song. So Great White’s musical peak turned out to be this version of a 1975 album track on the solo debut of Ian Hunter, formerly of the band Mott the Hoople. Lyrics about a malfunctioning heater on a tour bus and girlfriends who were just as unfaithful as their lead singer hookups turned out to be rock ’n’ roll verities.”

Great White’s rendition of “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” even became so well-known that when Hunter played the song live, people would ask why he was playing a Great White song, according to Kendall. (Hopefully Hunter’s cut of the residuals made up for the sting.)

Alice in Chains released Dirt in 1992, when grunge was no longer confined to Seattle’s underground music scene. By then, the genre had entered the mainstream, and Dirt, the band’s second studio album, became one of the defining records of the era. Driven by Jerry Cantrell’s heavy, grinding guitar riffs and the chilling vocal harmonies he shared with lead singer Layne Staley, Dirt had a sound all its own, one that continues to endure today.

No track better illustrates the personal history behind Dirt than “Rooster.” Written by Cantrell about his father’s experiences in the Vietnam War, the song brings family history, trauma and eventual reconciliation into an album often associated with despair. Cantrell has described how the song helped him reconnect with his father, offering a hopeful outcome not always associated with grunge music.

There is no denying the impact of Nevermind on popular music, but Dirt’s exploration of human emotion, raw honesty and haunting vocals makes it a compelling choice for the defining grunge album of the 1990s, at least according to this latest ranking.

A person has died at Six Flags Over Georgia on Monday, October 12, after witnesses reported seeing a man fall from a roller coaster, officials said. Several others were injured.

The Cobb County Department of Emergency Communications confirmed news of the death, but did not provide details on the incident that occurred at the park around 4 p.m. They added that the department’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating.

Six Flags Over Georgia addressed the incident.

“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest’s family, friends, and loved ones,” they said in a statement.

The roller coaster, called Goliath, opened in 2006 and is a 210-second ride that reaches a top speed of 70 mph and an elevation of 200 feet, according to the Six Flags website. Attractions at “sister” parks have been temporarily closed “out of an abundance of caution,” a park spokesperson added.

Ariel video from CNN affiliate WXIA showed other riders being evacuated from the roller coaster following the incident.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident at Six Flags Over Georgia today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the individual’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” City of Mableton Mayor Michael Owens said in a statement. “We are grateful to the personnel responding to this incident and will continue to support coordination with the appropriate authorities. Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from commenting further at this time.”

This comes after three riders sued Six Flags, saying that after riding X2, a roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Southern California, they suffered catastrophic brain injuries. The lawsuits were filed in September, saying they did not warn riders of the risks of riding. The X2 is a 200-foot-high roller coaster with seats that rotate, spinning riders by 360 degrees while reaching a top speed of 76 miles per hour.

Six Flags denied that the roller coaster caused fatal brain injuries, saying the roller coaster passed numerous safety tests. But it has been closed since July, with the park saying it was “the right thing to do”.

Interpol frontman Paul Banks is working on a new band with Aaron Hemphill, co-founder and former guitarist of Liars, and Raife Burchell, a London-based music supervisor. Banks confirmed the project in an interview with The Berliner, as Far Out and NME reported.

“I started a band in Berlin, which we would call ‘Berlin Project,’ if that were possible,” Banks said. “I’ve been working on that a lot, and it’s been a big part of my music journey in Berlin, and hopefully there’ll be a record out next year.”

He added, “We don’t have a label yet, but that’s been three years in the making. It’s with a friend of mine, Raife Burchell from London, who I met boxing and is often in Berlin, and with Aaron from Liars.”

Banks is best known as the lead singer of Interpol, the New York band that formed in 1997, then helped define the early-2000s indie-rock scene. He has also released solo music under his own name and the moniker Julian Plenti, and collaborated with Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA on Banks & Steelz. He is also a member of Muzz, alongside The Walkmen drummer Matt Barrick and multi-instrumentalist Josh Kaufman.

Hemphill, meanwhile, co-founded the experimental rock band Liars. He and Banks have known each other since Liars toured with Interpol in 2004, with Banks praising his former tourmate highly.

“Aaron lives in Berlin, and I’ve known him since Liars toured with Interpol in 2004,” Banks said. “That f-cking dude is one of the coolest guys I’ve ever seen with a guitar, and he’s just a wonderful person.”

He added, “He’s actually helped me in some ways with how to live here and showed me some of the ropes of getting health insurance and stuff like that.”

The third collaborator, Burchell, comes from a different corner of the music industry. He is an award-winning music supervisor and founder of the Dirty Soup creative agency, with experience scoring film, television, and advertising campaigns.

According to Far Out, Burchell won a British Independent Film Award for Best Music Supervision for his work on Die My Love, released in 2025. His background makes the new group an intriguing mix of established alternative-rock musicians and a music-industry creative who has largely worked behind the scenes.

The trio’s sound and final lineup remain unrevealed, and no confirmed release date exists for the album.

The new project is not the only way Banks has drawn inspiration from his adopted home. In a recent interview with NME, the singer discussed how living in Berlin has influenced his songwriting for Interpol.

“A lot of this record we wrote when we were in New York, and then I do a lot of lyric-writing in Berlin, refining a lot of the nebulous ideas that we jammed,” he said.

Banks also reflected on his longstanding affection for the German capital, recalling how it struck him when Interpol first began touring there.

“I always loved Berlin. In the early days of the band touring, I always felt like it was just one of the most fashionable cities; I felt like it had a Mad Max quality where the hipsters just seemed really edgy,” he said.

Although he’s no longer as connected to the city’s Berghain-centered nightlife scene, Banks still finds inspiration in its culture and people.

“Now I’m not really plugged into that Berghain-y hipster aspect of it and where I live is more young families, but it still gives me that urban injection,” he said. “It still feels like enough of a cultural hub that I get the inspiration for fashion and young people.”

With a new band taking shape and a potential album on the horizon, Berlin looks set to remain an important part of Banks’ musical journey.

Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s song “Fortunate Son” captured a moment in American history better than many other songs, and its anti-war message remains relevant more than 50 years later. While the song’s composition and lyrics are still just as impactful as when it first came out, the story of how “Fortunate Son” came to be is equally interesting.

The band’s frontman and main songwriter, John Fogerty, found inspiration for the song that would become the group’s next big hit from an unexpected place, and it came together in a flurry one day.

He said in an interview with Rick Beato, “Fortunate Son’ was the shortest song I ever wrote — about 20 minutes. This is 1969. All the political and cultural stuff, is just brewing in my mind.” He noted that the song was originally going to be called “Favorite Son,” a phrase used for a presidential candidate that is beloved by his or her own state delegates. But once Fogerty started writing, it shifted.

“I literally went into the bedroom with a little tablet and a pen, thinking the song was going to be called ‘Favorite Son,'” he went on. “I had no lines of the song at all. And suddenly I’m sitting there, and I [thought], ‘Some folks are born, made to wave…’ Oh, that’s pretty good!” Somewhere along the way, “Favorite Son” became “Fortunate Son,” although Fogerty didn’t note any specific reason for the change.

The song was an effort by Fogerty to create a track that would do well on the charts and maintain Creedence Clearwater Revival’s popularity. Luckily, it did just that.

“Fortunate Son” was a big success for the band, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also charted well in Canada, France, and Belgium, making a global impact. Sales were equally great, and over time, the song has been certified 8x platinum by the RIAA.

But even half a century later, “Fortunate Son” continues to make an impact with its message and memorable tune. Rolling Stone included the song on its list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” while it has been featured in many films and covered by plenty of other artists over the years.

Selma Blair’s lawyer is speaking out and explaining the reason behind the actress’s violent conduct on a Delta flight from Los Angeles to New York.

During her arraignment in criminal court on Monday, Oct. 12, Blair’s attorneys said the attacks and arrest were due to “severe confusion” that was caused by the actress missing her medication as well as a fall where she hit her head, Page Six reports.

They add that she had been on set and was working “extensive hours and exhaustive hours” before her trip.

“These factors, coupled with the altitude, resulted in a state of severe confusion and disorientation,” her attorney Shawn Barnes said. “This was not an intentional assault.”

Blair entered a plea of not guilty, appearing before a judge who set bail at $20,000 cash, $60,000 bond, or a $60,000 partially secured bond. She is facing seven years behind bars if convicted. Her case was adjourned until Jan. 19, 2027.

In photos obtained by Page Six, Blair is seen emotional during the arraignment, with her attorney Joshua Reitzas wiping tears away from her face.

Reitzas also asked the judge to consider Blair’s work, adding she’s “the gold statndard,” but the judge replied that, “Ms. Blair should not get special treatment because she is a celebrity.”

Blair was arrested on Monday after she punched one flight attendant and bit another one, while also trying to open the door while the plane was in the air. She was restrained on the aircraft and then taken into custody after landing. While she was being transported to the hospital for evaluation, she allegedly repeatedly kicked a  Port Authority police officer in the head and then assaulted a nurse upon arrival. The nurse pressed charges.

Blair faces federal charges due to the in-flight altercation as well as state charges from the attacks on the officer and the nurse.
