“And finally tonight, from Taiwan, as President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping prepare to meet, we will hear a lot about American decline and the rise of a powerful new China,” Dokoupil began the segment. "The Chinese, certainly....Is he OK? We're going to take a quick break. We have a medical emergency, here."

He added, "We're calling a doctor," as a female voice instructed, "Call the doctor, please."

That's when the live feed cut to the CBS studio in New York City.

“I’m going to sign off for Tony Dokoupil, who has been reporting in Taiwan,” reporter Matt Gutman told viewers. “We’re going to go to break. We’ll be right back."

Makeup Artist Reveals the #1 Eyebrow Color Mistake That Washes Out Women With Gray Hair

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Gray hair has had a serious cultural moment lately, and honestly, it's earned it. What was once something women rushed to cover up has become a full-on aesthetic choice—silver, salt-and-pepper, bright white, the whole spectrum.

The hair color world has finally caught up to what a lot of women already knew: gray hair can be genuinely striking and beautiful. The problem is that most makeup routines haven't caught up with it. People keep doing their brows the exact same way they always have, and against a completely different hair color, it's not working.

Eyebrows are one of those features that can either pull an entire look together or quietly undermine it—and most people don't realize how much their brow routine contributes to how fresh and defined their face appears overall.

When your hair changes, your brows need to change with it. The colors, contrasts and undertones that worked against your natural brunette or red or blonde aren't necessarily the ones that work against silver. What read as polished before can suddenly look harsh. What felt defined can start to feel heavy. And the features that gray hair is supposed to illuminate—its natural brightness, its light-reflecting softness—get flattened instead.

To find out exactly what's going wrong and how to fix it, we talked to celebrity makeup artist Nydia Figueroa, whose eighteen years of experience spans MAC Cosmetics, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, the Grammys, the VMAs and over 100 publications worldwide. She's seen this mistake in every context imaginable, and her fix is specific, actionable and—once you hear it—completely obvious.

The #1 Eyebrow Color Mistake That Washes Out Women With Gray Hair

The biggest brow mistake that washes women out with gray hair is going too dark—specifically reaching for black or very deep brown (when you've always used black or very deep brown), without considering what's changed.

Figueroa sees it constantly.

"A lot of women stick to what they've always used," she tells Parade, "but against gray hair, that contrast can feel harsh and overpowering." The brows stop enhancing the face and start competing with it, and the net result is that the face looks washed out rather than defined.

The irony is that darker brows feel like the obvious solution when features start to fade—more color, more definition, more presence. But with gray hair specifically, that instinct backfires.

Related: This Is the Best Eyebrow Color for Gray Hair, According to a Makeup Artist

Why Does the Wrong Brow Color Make Gray Hair Look Dull?

Gray hair has a quality that most other hair colors don't: it reflects light. That luminosity is one of the things that makes it look so beautiful when it's working. But it's also exactly what gets killed by the wrong brow shade.

"When the brows are too dark or too warm, they compete instead of complement," Figueroa says. "That imbalance can make the overall look feel flat and take away from the brightness gray hair naturally brings."

Too-warm brows—anything with a red or brassy undertone—clash against the cool, soft quality of gray hair in a way that reads as muddy rather than polished. Too-dark brows create a jarring contrast that draws the eye for the wrong reasons. Either way, the gray hair loses its glow.

Cool-toned shades are where Figueroa starts for almost everyone. Taupes, soft ash browns and gray-based tones work with the natural undertone of gray hair rather than fighting it.

For deeper skin tones, she doesn't abandon brown entirely—she just keeps it neutral.

"Stay within a deep brown family," she recommends, "just keeping it neutral rather than going all the way to black." The goal is to find a shade that creates definition without stark contrast.

How Should Someone Choose the Right Brow Shade for Their Skin Tone?

Getty

Skin tone is the second half of the equation. Figueroa's framework breaks down like this:

  • Cool undertones do best with ash, taupe or anything with a soft gray base.
  • Warm undertones should stick to a neutral soft brown and steer clear of anything with red or brassy tones.
  • Fair skin looks most natural with lighter, softer taupes that add definition without heaviness.
  • Medium to deep skin tones can handle richer neutrals—just keep them slightly softened rather than going for maximum depth.

The through line across all of them: neutral is almost always better than warm, and "slightly lighter than you think you need" is almost always the right call, Figueroa says.

Other Common Eyebrow Mistakes To Avoid With Gray Hair

Beyond going too dark, Figueroa flags two more pitfalls she sees repeatedly:

  • Over-defining the brows—creating a very precise, heavily filled shape—reads heavy against gray hair in a way it might not have before.
  • Filling in the entire brow as a solid block, rather than building it with intentional strokes, is the difference between brows that look drawn on and brows that look real.

"Filling in the entire brow without intention instead of mimicking natural hair strokes" is how she puts it, and once you start noticing it on other people, you can't unsee it.

How To Fill in Brows for a Natural Look With Gray Hair

Getty

Start with the right shade—which, after reading this far, you now know means cooler and softer than your instinct suggests.

Then, Figueroa's technique is all about restraint and precision: "Use light, hair-like strokes to fill in sparse areas rather than coloring in the entire brow."

A tinted or soft-hold brow gel adds texture and a natural lift without adding any heaviness on top of what you've already filled in.

The goal isn't just to make the brows look fuller. It's to make them look like better, more defined versions of themselves.

Related: 12 Best 2026 Hairstyles for Women Over 50, According to a Celebrity Stylist

What Should Women Do Instead for More Defined, Flattering Brows?

Figueroa's technique starts with a step most people skip: setting the brows with a brow gel before you do anything else. "You can clearly see where you actually need to fill in," she explains—which prevents the over-filling that creates that heavy, block-like finish.

Her go-to is the Ardell Brow Glue, which she loves for the lift it gives the brow shape. After that layer sets, she goes in with a pencil or brow pen to create hair-like strokes only in the spots that actually need them. "It gives you definition and dimension," she says, "but still looks effortless and undetectable."

That last word is the whole idea. With gray hair, the brow goal isn't more—it's better. Softer, more intentional, more attuned to what the rest of your face is doing now. The women who get this right look impossibly put-together. The ones who don't can't quite figure out why their makeup always looks slightly off. Now you know why.

1993 Film Ranked the 'Best Music Biopic Movie' of All Time

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 11:28am

Movie-goers are well aware that Hollywood has a habit of releasing films that focus on real-life musicians. Most recently, music fans have headed to theaters to watch Michael (2026), Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere (2025), and A Complete Unknown (2024). However, some music biopics are simply more acclaimed than others. Rotten Tomatoes proved this by releasing a definitive ranking of the "50 best music biopic movies."

The list included films like Love & Mercy from 2014, 2019'sRocketman, 2002's The Pianist, Amadeus from 1984, Blaze from 2018, and Funny Girl, released in 1968. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the 1993 film about the late Tina Turner, What's Love Got to Do With It, is the best music biopic movie. Rotten Tomatoes reported that the movie, starring Angela Bassett as Turner and Laurence Fishburne as Ike Turner, has a score of 97 percent on the website.

Angela Bassett Discussed Auditioning & Filming for 'What's Love Got to Do With It'

During a 2020 interview on the Tamron Hall Show, Bassett opened up about auditioning for the 1993 biopic. The actress said she didn't have the "name recognition" when she auditioned for the film.

"I went in like everyone else. It was a real audition. It wasn't as if they knew who they wanted. I went in like everyone else and auditioned," said Bassett on the talk show.

In a 2018 interview on Good Morning America, Bassett shared that it was difficult to play Turner, who died in 2023 at the age of 83, in What's Love Got to Do With It.

"I remember how strenuous and arduous it was, physically but also emotionally. Every day, it was like, you know, you had to just go in so deep emotionally," said Bassett, who received an Oscar nomination for her What's Love Got to Do With It performance.

Bassett also noted that the production of the film was relatively short because of Turner's touring schedule.

"Usually it takes nine months to a year between finishing a movie, and it being sweet and edited and put together, and then present it. But it was three months later to coincide with her world tour. It was crazy. But we did it," said Bassett in the 2018 interview.

1971 Soft Rock Hit, First Recorded by Another Music Icon, Became a No. 1 Friendship Anthem

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 11:21am

Carole King made way as one of the biggest singers after starting a solo career in the 1970s, which led to a hit track on her second album. That same year, the hit track topped the charts thanks toJames Taylor and became known as a top friendship anthem.

While working on tracks for her album Tapestry, King developed the song "You've Got a Friend." At the time, King and Taylor had been friends for years and even toured together when they were both working on their new albums. While King was working on her second album, Taylor was working on his album Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon.

According to Taylor, when he appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he heard King playing the tune for the track and thought he had heard it before because of how "classic" it was. It led him to develop his own version of Carole's song when finishing up his album, but the problem was that King was planning to include "You've Got a Friend" on her record.

Instead of telling Taylor "no" to releasing the track, King told her friend to release it and was "supportive." It was later revealed by King that she had written the track as a response to Taylor's "Fire and Rain" song, which talked about needing a friend. King spoke about the track having been a moment of pure inspiration, and initially never had Taylor in mind for it.

She once explained that she "didn't write it with James or anybody really specifically in mind. But when James heard it he really liked it and wanted to record it". As a result, the hit track was released by both singers in 1971.

Taylor's version would go on to land at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, his only to do so, and ranked as one of the best tracks of that year. Ironically, his album was only kept off the charts due to King's Tapestry becoming a No.1 hit, thanks to other chart-topping tracks that were released. Taylor is even heard playing the guitar in King's version of the song.

"You've Got a Friend" became a staple as a friendship anthem that won Taylor a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. King also won a Grammy for the track for Song of the Year. Both versions of the track were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Singer Lisa Loeb, 58, Hits the Red Carpet and Looks Like She Hasn’t Aged a Day Since Her 1994 Hit ‘Stay'

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 11:14am

Lisa Loeb may have skyrocketed to fame in the '90s, but the beloved singer and songwriter has barely aged a day in the last few decades.

Loeb, 58, rose to stardom in 1994 with her hit song, "Stay (I Missed You)." The tune, which was featured in the classic '90s flick Reality Bites, jumped to become a number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, all while Loeb wasn't even signed to a recording contract. She followed up that groundbreaking hit with classics like "Do You Sleep?" and "I Do," and even released a children's album, That's What It's All About, alongside the band The Hollow Trees in 2024. Still regularly on tour, Loeb has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

Flash forward to 2026, and Loeb hit the red carpet on Wednesday evening at the 2026 BMI Film, TV & Visual Media Awards at Beverly Wilshire, a Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Sporting those trademark cat's eye glasses, the stunning singer has barely changed in the 32 years since her classic hit "Stay" first debuted.

Loeb Wasn't Signed to a Major Label When 'Stay' Came Out

Earlier this month, Loeb sat down and discussed how she didn't even have a deal with a major record label when "Stay" came out.

"I had done a demo deal with somebody at one of the labels, and that song, when it went to number one, as it was climbing the charts, all the different A&R people and record labels, sort of the younger, up and coming A&R people, who were the people that were interested, finally their bosses were listening to them," Loeb shared.

Ultimately, she signed a record deal with Geffen Records when her song was number one on the charts.

"Literally that week," Loeb shared.

The Best Sci-Fi Books That Became TV Shows (And Whether the Show Did Them Justice)

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 11:13am

Science fiction has always had a complicated relationship with screen adaptations. The genre's best novels tend to live or die on ideas (or on the logic of imagined systems), and translating that to television is genuinely hard. When it works, though, it works spectacularly. Here are the most notable sci-fi book-to-TV adaptations of the past decade, and whether or not they lived up to the source material.

The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu, based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel)
Verdict: Surpassed expectations. Atwood's story of a near-future theocracy that enslaves women as reproductive vessels was already one of the most acclaimed novels of the 20th century. The Hulu series, with Elizabeth Moss at its center, expanded the story beyond the book's ending for six seasons and won numerous Emmys. It is, by a wide margin, the gold standard for adapting literary sci-fi.

The Expanse (Amazon Prime Video, based on James S.A. Corey's nine-novel series)
Verdict: Matched the source. Saved from cancellation by Amazon after three seasons on Syfy, this hard-science space opera is the rare adaptation that fans of the books and new viewers alike consider a near-masterpiece. The chemistry between its ensemble cast maps almost perfectly onto the novels' character dynamics. All six seasons remain on Prime.

Silo (Apple TV+, based on Hugh Howey's Wool trilogy)
Verdict: Excellent. Howey self-published his first installment in 2011 as a short story. The Apple TV+ adaptation, led by Rebecca Ferguson, captures the claustrophobic paranoia of the books while expanding the world's mythology. Season 3 is expected later in 2026.

Foundation (Apple TV+, based on Isaac Asimov's classic novels)
Verdict: A successful, loose reinterpretation. Asimov's books were widely considered unfilmable due to their scale and unconventional narrative structure. The show takes significant creative liberties, adding character arcs and emotional throughlines largely absent from the source material. For purists, that's a problem. For everyone else, it's prestige sci-fi at a high level. Season 4 is confirmed.

Related: After Almost 50 Years, A Cult Sci-Fi Favorite Is Officially Coming Back

Dark Matter (Apple TV+, based on Blake Crouch's 2016 novel)
Verdict: Creator-approved and better for it. Crouch himself wrote and executive produced the series, which follows a physicist whose life is violently swapped with an alternate-universe version of himself. Having the author run the adaptation kept the emotional core of the book intact while expanding certain storylines for the screen. Season 2 is confirmed.

Murderbot (Apple TV+, based on Martha Wells' The Murderbot Diaries series)
Verdict: The adaptation fans dreamed of. Wells' sardonic, socially anxious security robot has one of the most devoted readerships in contemporary sci-fi. The Apple TV+ version, with Alexander SkarsgÄrd perfectly cast in the lead, earned a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and captured the books' rare combination of deadpan humor and genuine emotional depth. Season 2 is in production.

3 Body Problem (Netflix, based on Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy)
Verdict: Ambitious but uneven. The first season took considerable creative liberties with one of the most celebrated works of Chinese science fiction, relocating much of the action from China to England and reordering events significantly. It generated debate, as Liu Cixin's trilogy is beloved enough that changes resonated loudly. A second season is coming.

Netflix Quietly Ends Popular Legal Drama After 5 Seasons

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 11:09am

Netflix has officially revealed the fate of one of its most popular legal dramas.

The streaming service confirmed that The Lincoln Lawyer will end after its upcoming fifth season. Production on the final season is already underway.

The series, based on Michael Connelly's popular book series of the same name, stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as defense attorney Mickey Haller, who runs his law practice out of the back seat of his Lincoln Navigator while taking on high-profile cases across Los Angeles.

“All good things must come to an end, but thankfully sometimes how they come to an end is up to us,” co-showrunners Ted Humphrey and Dailyn Rodriguez said in a statement announcing the show’s conclusion.

The producers explained that they always hoped to give the story a proper ending rather than leave the series unresolved.

“From the very beginning, the mission was always not only to tell the story of Mickey Haller and his compatriots, but also to give that story a proper conclusion,” they said.

Since premiering in 2022, The Lincoln Lawyer has become one of Netflix’s most reliable drama hits, frequently landing near the top of the platform’s global streaming charts after new seasons debuted. Fans were drawn to the series’ mix of courtroom drama, Los Angeles noir and Garcia-Rulfo’s laid-back performance as Mickey Haller, the unconventional defense attorney who famously works from the back seat of his car instead of a traditional office.

The final season will consist of 10 episodes and will be inspired by “Resurrection Walk,” the seventh book in Connelly’s Lincoln Lawyer series.

According to Netflix, season 5 will introduce Mickey’s previously unknown half-sister, Emi Finch, played by Cobie Smulders, as Mickey takes on a major wrongful-conviction case while confronting long-buried family secrets.

The final season will also feature returning cast members Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole and Angus Sampson.

Humphrey and Rodriguez promised fans that the legal drama will receive a satisfying conclusion.

“We are right now building a final season that will provide the satisfying finale Mickey Haller deserves,” they said. “We can’t wait to share it with you!”

The signing is not only a dream come true for the actor/athlete, but what makes it even more emotional is that it fulfills a promise to his late father, who also loved soccer and passed away in December 2025. 'He always was like, "Ay, Cristobal, you are very crazy, but I believe in you,"' FernĂĄndez told ESPN.

Before signing with El Paso, Fernández trained with MLS team Chicago Fire and also went through a two-month trial with the Locomotive. “[Football] has always been a huge part of my life and identity—and no matter where life has taken me the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart,” Fernández said in a statement on the club's website.

"This journey back to professional fĂștbol soccer is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be," he continued. Maybe I’m just a crazy man with crazy dreams
so being here with the “Locos” actually makes perfect sense. ÂĄVamos Locos!”

Locomotive Head Coach Junior Gonzalez is thrilled about the team's newest player. “Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat to our forward line,” he said. “His passion for the game and leadership qualities for our locker room allow us to continue growing the positive culture we strive for as a club.”

New Report Shows Rent Prices Are Falling as a New Generation of Retirees Look for Homes Where They Can Age in Place

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 11:00am

When it comes time to retire, many people opt to leave their homes and move elsewhere. Sometimes it's because they want to downsize; other times, it's more about affordability. And while there may be all different types of motivations for making a move, seniors often look for homes that will allow them to age in place.

Thanks to a new report from Realtor.com, it sounds like those retirees and those about to retire may be able to find a fresh new wave of options in an unlikely place: Rental properties. That's because this new report says that rental prices continue to drop in most major metros. Keep reading to learn more.

A New Report Shows Rental Prices Continue to Decline

According to a report from Realtor.com, April 2026 marks the 33rd month in a row that 0- to 2-bedroom rental properties have seen a price drop. The median average fell $29, according to the report, which is 1.7 percent less than last year.

That's not all the good news, either. The 50 largest metros report a median rent of $1,673, which is $92 less than the 2022 summer peak. Rental prices are still higher than pre-pandemic levels by about $254 a month, but the numbers are trending down.

More Rental Inventory May Help Retirees

According to Realtor.com's findings, there's been a bit of a commercial real estate boom, and multifamily housing is seeing a huge spike in construction. That's especially good news for seniors who want to live somewhere with a built-in community of neighbors, especially if they are hoping to age in place.

Many of these multifamily dwellings are managed by management companies that handle routine maintenance, allowing retirees to toss out their snow shovels and lawnmowers as soon as they settle in.

However, they aren't being built at the same rate nationwide. "The story isn't the same in every region, and that matters for where renters will feel relief next," Jiayi Xu, economist at Realtor.com, said in an email to Parade. "The Northeast is already seeing new multi-family units come online and rents respond in some large markets. The West is telling a very different story."

These Metros Are Seeing the Biggest Drop in Price

Retirees who are keen on ditching the responsibility and cost of homeownership may want to consider the following metros where Realtor.com says the biggest drop in rental prices is happening:

  • Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, Georgia, with a median asking price of $1,549 a month
  • Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos, Texas, with a median asking price of $1,362
  • Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, Maryland, with a median asking price of $1,806
  • Birmingham, Alabama, with a median asking price of $1,181
  • Columbus, Ohio, with a median asking price of $1,174

You can view the full list by reading the complete report.

Now, while choosing the place you want to spend your golden years can be challenging, settling on a place with affordable housing is always a good idea. If you're unsure what you want to do, consider talking to a retirement professional about your retirement goals and what's important to you. Olivia Benson's All About the Benjamins! 'Law & Order: SVU' Star Mariska Hargitay’s Net Worth in 2026

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 11:00am

With its 27th season currently underway, Law & Order: SVUis one of the longest-running dramas in the history of television. As a result, we have to imagine that its star, Mariska Hargitay, has amassed a massive net worth from her tenure on the series.

Not only has Hargitay carved out a name for herself on television, but she also comes from Hollywood royalty and has made numerous appearances in other film and TV projects. Detective Benson would be proud!

Here is everything you could ever want to know about Mariska Hargitay’s net worth in 2026. Plus, how she earned her millions.

How did Mariska Hargitay become famous?

When starting out in Hollywood, it always helps to have famous parents, and Mariska Hargitay is no exception to that rule. She is the daughter of iconic bombshell actress Jayne Mansfield and actor Mickey Hargitay.

Unfortunately, Mariska lost her mother in a car accident when she was only three and a half years old. Mariska was asleep in the backseat of the car and escaped the accident with a zigzag-shaped scar on the side of her head.

Mariska Hargitay followed in her parents’ footsteps and made her film debut in the 1985 horror-comedy Gremlins rip-off Ghoulies. It wasn’t until she landed her long-standing role of Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 1999 that she became a household name.

What is Mariska Hargitay’s net worth?

Mariska Hargitay’s current net worth in 2026 is estimated at $100 million. Damn, Detective! That can buy her a lot of pantsuits!

Who is the highest-paid actor on Law & Order: SVU?

Considering that Mariska Hargitay is the longest-running cast member on Law & Order: SVU, having started on the show with its premiere and continuing into its 27th season, it’s no surprise that Hargitay is the highest-paid actor on the show. She earns a reported $500,000 per episode. The next highest paid cast member, Ice-T, earns around $250,000 per episode.

Is Mariska Hargitay a millionaire?

With a net worth of $100 million, Mariska Hargitay is definitely a millionaire and then some! And earning $500,000 an episode for each Law & Order: SVU season only adds to that. It's good to be a sergeant!

Mariska Hargitay reportedly earns $500,000 per episode for her role as Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, putting her in the top tier of actor salaries on TV. Loyalty pays off!

How much does Mariska Hargitay make per season?

Considering the fact that Mariska Hargitay makes a reported $500,000 per episode for Law & Order: SVU and each season consists of around 22 episodes, she most likely makes around $11 million each season of the show. Imagine pulling in at least $11 million per year as just a base salary!

Does Mariska Hargitay get royalties?

Law & Order: SVU is one of the most-watched TV series currently in syndication. While her syndication deal has not been explicitly stated to the press, there is little doubt that Hargitay makes royalties from the syndication of the series. And considering it's pretty much always airing on some network, chances are she could handsomely live off of royalties alone for the rest of her days if she ever chooses to do so.

How much does Mariska Hargitay make in royalties?

It is not known exactly how much Mariska Hargitay makes from the royalties for the syndication of Law & Order: SVU. Considering her base pay is around $11 million per season and it has been reportedly estimated that she makes around $13 to $15 million per year from the show, we can imagine she earns around $2 million to $4 million each year from the royalties for the series alone.

How much do Law & Order actors make on reruns?

The main actors from the Law & Order series most likely have royalties included in their contracts from the syndication rights for the various shows. It has been reported that stars from these series earn 6% of their original salaries in syndication royalties per year.

Six percent of $11 million would be $660,000, so we can imagine Mariska Hargitay makes at least that amount—most likely more—from the royalties each year for Law & Order: SVU. The other main actors also most likely make more than that reported 6%, but that is at least a starting point.

Of course, you can’t talk about Olivia Benson’s massive fortune without wondering about her partner in (solving) crime. While Mariska Hargitay is the reigning queen of the precinct, her longtime co-star Christopher Meloni has built a serious empire of his own. The legendary chemistry between Benson and Stabler didn't just make for iconic TV; it turned both actors into the highest-paid names in the Dick Wolf universe.

If you’re curious how his paycheck and procedural points stack up against Mariska’s, check out Meloni’s Net Worth and His 'Law & Order' Salary. It turns out, protecting the city is a very lucrative business for both of our favorite detectives.

Is Mariska Hargitay married or in a relationship?

Yes, Mariska Hargitay is currently married to fellow actor Peter Hermann. The couple tied the knot in 2004.

50 Years Ago, the Lead Singer From an English Rock Band Died While Tuning His Guitar

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 10:55am

The Yardbirds, an English rock band formed in 1963, kickstarted the music careers of three legends—Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. All three men ranked toward the top of Rolling Stone’s list of the 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. The other band members included Jim McCarty, Chris Dreja, Paul Samwell-Smith, and Keith Relf.

Relf, who was the lead vocalist and harmonica player for the band, died at the age of 33. He was tuning an electric guitar in his basement when he was electrocuted. The incident occurred because the instrument was not properly grounded. He was later found by his young son and was buried in Richmond Cemetery. His death was announced 50 years ago today, on May 14, 1976.

When McCarty spoke about the band in a 2021 interview, he was asked how Relf felt about the guitarist (Clapton) getting more interest than him, the frontman. “That was very odd because he was a very obvious frontman," McCarty said. "When I first saw him playing with Paul I thought, this guy is a real frontman. You know, when one looks at him, he's got the long blonde hair, he's got this sort of way with him. Everyone wants to mother him. Then, when Clapton was in the band, I noticed that he got a lot of interest, a lot of people looking at him or standing on his side of the stage when he was playing, which was unusual because the frontman normally got all the attention."

McCarty also complimented Relf on his talents. “He was very good,” he said. “He loved jazz, and he loved a lot of different music, and he had his own view on things, and he was a very spiritual guy. I really got on well with him. He was probably my best friend for a long time.”

Relf co-wrote several songs for the band, including “Shapes of Things,” “Over, Under,  Sideways, Down,” and “Happenings Ten Years Time Ago.” He also went on to record a solo single called “Mr. Zero,” which reached No. 50 on the UK Singles Chart.

After the Yardbirds broke up in 1968, Relf joined several more bands, including Together and Renaissance. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

1976 Box Office Hit Ranked Among Best Horror Films Still Holds Up 50 Years Later

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 10:37am

The year 1976 saw the release of numerous renowned films that are still celebrated today: Rocky, Network, All the President's Men, Taxi Driver.

The list goes on, and it also includes a memorable horror film that spawned quite the franchise. Despite mixed reviews upon its theatrical release, The Omen became a box office smash, earning more than $60 million in the U.S. and becoming one of the highest-grossing moves that year.

Here's the official synopsis of the groundbreaking supernatural hit, which now holds an 86% average critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes after more favorable retrospective reviews were offered:

"American diplomat Robert (Gregory Peck) adopts Damien (Harvey Stephens) when his wife, Katherine (Lee Remick), delivers a stillborn child. After Damien's first nanny hangs herself, Father Brennan (Patrick Troughton) warns Robert that Damien will kill Katherine's unborn child. Shortly thereafter, Brennan dies and Katherine miscarries when Damien pushes her off a balcony. As more people around Damien die, Robert investigates Damien's background and realizes his adopted son may be the Antichrist."

The film helped launch the big-screen career of Richard Donner, who would go on to direct other high-profile films such as Superman (1978), The Goonies and Lethal Weapon.

The impact of The Omen spreads far and wide, with the popular filmmaking website NoFilmSchool.com boldly claiming that it "set the satanic horror standard."

"In addition to establishing the powerful “evil child” horror archetype, The Omen blended biblical elements with pop culture," per an article published on the website just last year. "Its approach showed filmmakers how to leverage popular beliefs about the Devil to craft compelling good-versus-evil narratives."

The film was remade and released in 2006, amid the original's 30th anniversary, this time starring Julia Stiles and Liev Schreiber, though it was no match for the source material. The latest addition to the franchise was The First Omen in 2024, a prequel to The Omen.

Jasmine, 41, explained that she found out she was pregnant on the Monday after the Super Bowl when she was packing for a snowboarding trip to Japan. She thought she should take a test before they left "just to be safe."

"And sure enough, it was positive. The lines were super faint, but they were there," she recounted. "I was completely shocked and instantly emotional."

Jasmine and Brett are already parents of two daughters, Hazel, 6, and Darla, 1. Because it took her so long to get pregnant with their second child, she said they weren't expecting to see a positive pregnancy test so soon after they started trying to conceive.

"We needed medical intervention," Jasmine said of getting pregnant with Darla. "So a spontaneous pregnancy was the last thing I expected. I immediately ran downstairs to tell my husband, and he had the exact same reaction — total disbelief mixed with excitement."

Rick Devens Reveals What Shocked Him Most About His 'Survivor 50' Feud With Joe — And Where They Stand Now (Exclusive)

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 10:35am

Survivor 50 is here! Every week, Parade's Mike Bloom will bring you interviews with the castaway most recently voted off the island.

"I always feel lucky."

One of the final quotes from Rick Devens on Survivor 50 is a perfect microcosm of his general attitude across 22 tumultuous days. Of course, there is the fact that the Edge of Extinction standout staked his entire game on a coin flip, adding quite a bit of coin to the overall prize fund. But the former reporter gave the scoop preseason that he was originally told he would be an alternate for the milestone season. And so just the fact he was here in Fiji was a blessing, a freedom to play no holds barred and, most importantly, find the joy. And, while he spent his last night in the game pontificating on the meaning of the stars dotting the sky, we witnessed a true star of Season 50 get snuffed out shortly thereafter.

đŸ”„Don’t miss our weekly Survivor newsletter! Sign up to get Mike Bloom’s exclusive interviews with the players and the latest news about the show right to your inbox.đŸ”„

Despite feeling he was playing with house money going into the game, Rick was still cognizant that he needed to change his play style if he wanted another deep run. And so he spent the first half of the game staying away from the idol hunts, sitting on his hands. Admittedly, those hands did come out when he was presented an opportunity courtesy of Christian Hubicki, hiding a fake idol at Tribal Council to pull out in a pinch. But Rick was more set on accruing relationships rather than idols this time. Unfortunately, perhaps the relationship he was most known for this season was far from positive. Rick and Joe Hunter's approaches to Survivor are like oil (not blood) and water. And that came to a head early on Cila, as he had a fiery argument with the fire captain that would bear out for the rest of the game.

Fortunately, Rick entered the merge with many more friends than enemies, as his tactics to lay low had gotten him into a solid spot in an enormous postmerge. But it all went up in smoke once he reached into the Tribal Council fire pit one fateful night. Knowing he and Aubry Bracco were being floated around due to the "Double Duos" twist, he grabbed his fake idol, believing the slate could simply be wiped clean tomorrow. Unfortunately, many others in the game did not see it that way. From their perspective, Rick had unnecessarily drawn attention to himself and now seemingly had an idol. And so, he suddenly found himself a familiar position: On the outside, public enemy number one.

Related: ‘Survivor 50’ is Bringing Back Fan Favorite Prize Thanks to Sia — Here’s How to Vote

As Rick espoused, however, the last thing you want him to do is know he's on the bottom. Because that's when the fireworks begin. Once again feeling in danger going into Tribal Council, Rick quickly commandeered the evening by throwing Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick and Jonathan Young under the bus. But his time as the star of the show was only beginning, as MrBeast entered the fray to present him with an offer he couldn't refuse. Given the chance to risk instant elimination to earn immunity, an idol and an extra million dollars to the prize fund, risky Rick jumped at the opportunity. And the Season 50 50/50 turned out well for him indeed. Over the course of mere minutes, Rick had gone from a dead man walking with a fake idol to the safest person in the game with a real idol.

Despite his game-changing choice of heads, Rick couldn't use the opportunity to get ahead in the game. While he guaranteed his safety the next round by playing his idol, he lost his number one ally in Emily Flippen. His back was against the wall, and unlike the Kool-Aid Man, he couldn't bust through it. His ordinary escape routes in idols and immunity wins were no longer options. And so he took a literal shot in the dark, hoping another gamble would work out in his favor. Alas, this would be Rick Devens' final form of Tribal Council shenanigans of the season. But he still wallked out with a trademark grin plastered across his face, and his head held high, looking aloft at the stars to light his way out of the game.

Now out of the game, Rick talks with Parade about his complicated relationship with Joe, how much that fake idol changed his game, and the emotional roller coaster of staking his entire game on MrBeast and a single coin flip.

It's safe to say you felt on the ropes during your last day in the game. Were you always going to play your Shot in the Dark? Or did you feel like Tiffany's blindside of Rizo had legs?
I was absolutely, at Tribal, determined that I was going to play that Shot. There was a time during the day when Tiff was open to this plan. And it was so funny, because that all came about [because] Tiff and Jonathan were really pretty annoyed with Joe for not taking them on the reward. Because Rizo had had a lot of food options at the auction, and Cirie, famously, was eating so much at the auction. She was regurgitating a little bit. So me and my mischievous self, I'm really playing into that. I'm like, "Yeah, didn't Rizo not drink that protein shake, Jonathan? You probably would have liked that." And so I was really hoping that they'd get that annoyed.

And so when Tiff floated this, I was on board, and Aubry was kind of the swing. And Aubry and I had really gotten a deeper relationship when we were tied together. But clearly I was more into that relationship than Aubey was. [Laughs.] As we watch it back, we see that she was loyal to me then, but not really loyal to me after that. And I think that's better in gameplay. As much as I say, "I don't care if you play with honor and integrity," and that's true, I'm super loyal. I'm not going to write Christian's name down; I'm not going to write Emily's name down. And Aubry became that, until she wasn't. And I was never going to write Cirie's name down until she had to pick a side. And she ended up not picking our side, which I think was probably the right move.

So there did seem like there could be momentum. And Tiff even told me, l"You've got to stop looking for the idol, dude. You are freaking everybody out,. You've got to chill if we're going to make this work." And I did, and that's when I'm in the hammock. And finally, I went to Tiff and was like, "I don't think this is going to work. I'm going to go look for the idol." And she was like, "I think you're right. Go for it." Because at that point, she wants me to find the idol, then her plan gets done anyway. So I love Tiff. I love that she tried to make it happen. But by the time I got to Tribal, I knew it's the Shot in the Dark. And dude, I was riding so high from the MrBeast thing, I'm like, "It'll probably hit!"

Well, let's talk about another moment where people were freaking out around you having an idol. It seemed like the pivot point of your game came when you pulled out the fake you had hidden during the "Double Duos" Tribal Council. What led you to do that in that moment, and what was your reaction to how people were responding to it?
So honestly, I was so in love with the idea of playing this fake idol. I mean, Christian and I had done this amazing heist where he falls, and we plant a fake idol at Tribal. So it's a nightmare to think I'm going to go home without using it. So I felt very at risk that night. I'm still not convinced that I wouldn't go home. When I talk about revisionist history, dude, you know that people will say things now that they didn't necessarily feel there. I mean, everyone's like, "We knew it was fake." And it's like, well, the whole next episode you're still acting like it's real!

So A, I did feel at risk. B, the idea of going home without playing it was a nightmare. And then it's a two-for-one. I can save Aubry, and I can save myself. Whereas the other nightmare scenario is like, okay, we wait a week, maybe Christian and I are the targets. One of us grabs the fake idol, and it gets the other voted out. That would be awful if I was the reason Christian went home, because I got the fake idol that we both planted.

So I knew Christian's basically safe at this duo thing because he's tied to Jonathan. So I just felt like it was the perfect moment to do it. And again, in my mind, I'm like, "Okay, I can hold onto it. For all they know, I have a real idol because I can't play it tonight. I've got to come up with an excuse why I'm not playing it." But I thought it was just the right moment to go to it. And I thought it was so interesting how many people criticized or Monday-morning quarterbacked how I went for it. It's like, guys, it worked!

Like people doing impressions of you?
Jealous, jealous. They wish they could come up with a move like this. [Laughs.] But no, it was so fun, and I loved it.

Let's get into the person who ended up doing that impression of you: Joe. It's clear the two of you just have different opinions of how to play Survivor. And we see this rocky relationship all the way back from an early argument with Cila all the way to last week's episode, when he said what you were doing at that Stephenie Tribal Council was "inappropriate" and "disgusting." Talk to me about your perspective on this dynamic.
So before I get into our dynamic out there, I just want you to know I love Joe. We talked a lot during the season, sending apologies back and forth. He's a dad; I respect him. I'm looking forward to our kids playing together at the finale. Love Joe. Any fan who meets Joe will not be disappointed. He's a great guy, and he's going to give you a great experience.

It's a real shame that things took a turn, because I think I showed during the season, as much as I'm all about playing a deceptive game and having fun and doing all these things, I'm super loyal. I'm never writing Christian's name down. I'm never writing Emily's name down, even in a revote when I know it's failed. That's just not the way I'm going to be. And I think that sends a message to the jury about the way you're playing. That's much more helpful than going back to camp and saying, "Well, I didn't write your name down the second time." People don't care. You tried to write me down the first time! I don't care about that.

So I do think if we could have gotten back on the same page, I could have been a really good ally to Joe. And I will say I was surprised during the season at how much I was on his mind. I'm not a bad person because I'm playing a game hard. I keep all my commentary to gameplay, and he does too. By and large, I think we have that in common.

But I think our difference in opinion is I feel like, as an ally, I'm taking care of you, if I'm protecting you, and if I'm never coming after you, if I'm looking out for our interest. But I don't think that means I need to tell you all my secrets. I had planned to hide a fake idol before Christian found the Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol, and [then] he found that. So, okay, I told him, because we can use that wrapper, and it's great. I still don't tell Emily and Cirie, who at that point I'm totally loyal with, because it doesn't affect them. So that's fine to me. But I think Joe, from watching the season, it's like he really wants you to tell him all the secrets and be filled in, which is a fine perspective.

But, yeah, we kind of hugged it out on that beach and said we're good after that argument. And clearly, we were not good on either of our parts. [Laughs.] But that being said, if I think if I felt the same way Joe had, I would have voted him out and kept Genevieve at that one split. But I felt likeJoe's such an honest guy that when he tells me, "We're good," we're good. I just did not realize that I'd gotten under his skin as much as I had as a game player. But I really have a lot of respect for Joe. It's just a shame that one tiny little thing of bad gameplay on my part, coming up with a stupid lie, it shows you how much of a ripple effect that can have throughout a season.

The thing he assigns this "inappropriate" label to is this MrBeast Tribal Council where Stephenie goes home. We need to go through the big hits of perhaps the pinnacle of your Survivor career. It seems like you immediately sit down and blow up the game, saying Stephenie and Jonathan approached you and Aubry about targeting Ozzy. Was that true? And did you do this because you felt you were in danger going into tribal?
Okay, let me take it step by step. It's 100% true, and I felt like that was a real key, to be honest. Like, "Ozzy, I was comfortable voting for you also. Rizo, I threw your name out." I thought that was a real key in my strategy of letting people know that I was being honest. Whereas Stephenie, her response was, "Oh, I never did anything, I never did anything. I never did anything." And that's why I say, "I think thou doth protest too much." It's like, now I'm just trying to be quiet and let you sink your own ship.

And yeah, it was because I thought that I was at risk. I thought for sure I was the number one target going into that Tribal. But I didn't think, as I'm trying to put myself in other people's shoes, that getting rid of me was good for Cirie or Tiff or Rizo or Ozzy, and certainly not for Aubry and Emily. Because I'm a heat-seeking missile at Joe and Jonathan and Steph at this point. Because they tease me in on this plan, and then they're like, "Oh, well, it didn't work out. We'll just cut Devens."

So again, I think it was a great move. I'm very proud of. That's almost what I'm most proud of all season. Because, yeah, the fake idol was a big, flashy thing. The coin toss, I love the way I went at it, but it's a big risk. Whereas this was a plan. "I'm going to go in and I'm going to try to turn the tables." And I'm not sure to this day whether or not it would have worked. Because I don't trust people's revisionist history. What you're saying now is not necessarily what you were feeling out there. But again, nothing personal came out of my mouth. I didn't say, "Oh, so and so's a bad person" or anything. It was strictly gameplay. They told me too much information. Now I'm sharing with you the information. And just like with the fake idol, I try to make it a big splash and then kind of sink back and let other people work it out. As soon as Tiff jumped in, as soon as Cirie started asking follow-ups, it's like, "Alright, I got the ball rolling. Let's see where this goes."

So I don't think it was disgusting. I thought it was great. That's exactly the type of gameplay I like to root for on Survivor: Big, bold moves. I'm not going out quiet. I'm going out fighting.

Well, you were able to sink back soon after this because you earn immunity through taking the "MrBeast Super Beware Advantage" and flipping that coin. Walk me through the emotional roller coaster of those moments, from jumping up at the chance to do it to the coin landing on heads to then having to immerse yourself back in the game during a live Tribal Council.
Well, so as I'm going up to flip the coin, I gotta tell you, my confidence was stupid! [Laughs.] I was just so sure that it was gonna hit. And I was at peace with the fact that, if this is the way I go out, no one in 50 seasons has gone out by a coin flip. It's fine, they can say they didn't vote me out. But I was sure it was gonna hit, Mike. I had no doubt my mind I was landing this, which is insane. Looking back on it, like, "What are you talking about?! It's 50/50!" But also, as much as I thought I'd turn the tables on Steph, I wasn't positive. So I say out there it's a better chance than the Shot in the Dark. So I was very much at peace with it. I was ready to roll.

And then when it hit, I'm over the moon. Even Jeff's like, "Alright, well, now we got to get back in." And I'm like, "Jeff, can I have the coin?" He's like, "Devens, I'm trying to do something here! We can talk about that after." Like, "Sorry, Jeff. I had adrenaline just pumping through my body."

Did you get to keep the coin?
I have not gotten the coin. And I asked for it again at the end of the game. And there's more than one coin apparently, because they knew it would be such a big moment. I'm like, "You've got to give me that coin."

But when I go back to the bench, in my mind, I've already done enough to put the target on Steph. I know that the other person's probably Aubry, which I don't want to go. But whenever I make a big splash, I try to sink back, and that includes going back to camp. I'm not mouthing off; I'm trying to shrink back. The next morning is the calmest Devens you'll get! [Laughs.] I'm leaving camp, maybe I'll go dance away from you, but that's not in front of anybody. I'm trying to sink back in the shadows — always unsuccessfully, obviously. [Laughs.] But no, from that point, I just felt like I'd done enough. I probably won't even have a vote; I assumed Steph would steal my vote. So, yeah, I was just riding high, going, "Wow, I'm safe tonight. I'm safe tomorrow night. This is great."

Well, I think that high is a representation of the general gratitude you had in every phase of this game. I know you spoke to me about being an alternate forthis season at one point, which gave you this freedom, knowing there was one time when you wouldn't be out here. And I think, as much as you talked about looking up at the stars and seeing those who support you from miles away, we got the chance to look at a star ourselves light up our screens for 12 weeks.
Thank you, dude. You have such a way with words. You're such a poet. I love it. I never forgot that this was Season 50, and that I wanted to give the fans something special. And I never forgot all the players that wanted on 50 so badly and didn't get it, because I remember how much my heart hurt when they told me I was an alternate and I felt like I wasn't going to get on the show. So I never wanted a player at home to go, "Devens took a spot that was wasted."

One person's going to win the game, and I don't want anyone to have any doubt that was my focus. Even when I make a big target of myself, that's what happened on 38, and I almost got there. But I also will never be sitting in a Final Three and looking at zero votes not have anything to plead. That's just not going to be the way I play. If I become a target too early, I take great pride in being a target. [Laughs.] I think that means you're doing something that's putting people on edge.

Award-Winning Country Star Teases Epic ‘Sheriff Country’ Stint

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 10:33am

Country music fan favorite Maren Morris is set to appear on Sheriff Country as the first season of the Fire Country spin-off nears the end.

As Parade reported, Morris has been tapped to play Hazel, Skye’s (Amanda Arcuri) sponsor, on the Friday, May 15 episode of the CBS drama.

In the wake of learning that her grandfather, Wes (W. Earl Brown), founded the illegal weed grower’s co-op that got in bed with the cartel and watching her mother, Mickey (Morena Baccarin), arrest him, Skye relapses.

Sheriff Country fans know that when the season kicked off, Skye was newly out of rehab. Although she’s been on the straight and narrow all season, that’s about to change, which means Hazel is needed more than ever.

The official Instagram for Sheriff Countryposted a video of Morris on set filming the show, teasing her character.

“I play Hazel, and she is Skye’s NA sponsor, and she’s very compassionate and soft and funny, but she’s also like you cannot mess with her. She’s very no B.S. No frills. You can’t get much past her,” she expressed.

Morris also revealed what it was like filming the hit CBS drama.

“I think the most exciting, cool thing I have learned is it’s fun to be on set. I think once you know your lines, you kind of just get to like, play. And every take is like a new surprise, and you just listen to your co-stars and enjoy it. I think I was psyching myself up that it was going to be really heavy or serious, but it’s actually been quite the opposite,” the country singing sensation shared.

Sunflower Wind Spinner Metal Garden Stake, $64.99 at Hobby Lobby

Hobby Lobby

Just the kind of decor that earns its keep the second you stake it into the ground, Hobby Lobby's Sunflower Wind Spinner requires minimal assembly, needing only a solid patch of grass and a natural breeze to bring it to life. And considering its normal retail price sits at $130, snagging it now for just $64.99 feels like a no-brainer.

Featuring a brushed bronze pole with ground stakes at the bottom for secure placement, this piece is topped with a horizontal metal bar that supports two spinning sections, one on each side. Each spinner features curved metal leaves in varying sizes, connected by wavy wires that lead to a flower-like center, giving the entire piece the look of a blooming sunflower.

With golden yellow hues complemented by rust red, brown and black accents, this piece looks naturally elegant no matter where it's placed. And with a good breeze flowing through your yard, its whimsical design creates a mesmerizing display, no batteries or electricity needed.

"Probably the best spinner ever bought," one fan raved in a review. "Its great quality and the movement and color shine in the sunlight is beautiful," they added.

"Absolutely love it," another chimed in, noting that they "would buy another one" due to it being "very well made."

"What a fantastic wind spinner," a third shopper said. "Great quality, very heavy pole, super easy to assemble
really quite beautiful and a great buy!"

As for its overall size, the spinner and stake together stand 81.88 inches tall, with a 22.2-inch width and a 10-inch depth. It's made entirely of metal and designed for outdoor use only. With that said, it's likely resistant to most weather conditions, though it wouldn't be a bad idea to tuck it inside during especially rough weather where strong winds or hail become a factor.

Otherwise, this gorgeous garden accent is ready to elevate your space, bring a bit of joy along with the season and inspire a world of outdoor upgrades you might not have known you actually needed. Snag one while the deal is still hot, and while you're at it, don't miss Hobby Lobby's gorgeous $8 wind chime and rustic three-tier farmhouse shelf either.
