Isabel Klee has fostered over 30 dogs to date, many of whom have had physical and emotional difficulties. The animal advocate has helped many canines overcome serious challenges and find their forever homes. Now, she's going to bat for another precious pooch.

Gracie is a blind senior Chihuahua with diabetes. The little fur baby has been up for adoption for almost four months, but still hasn't gotten her new family. Klee was recently called in to lobby for the charming Chi.

Even though her schedule is packed with moving apartments and a book tour to promote her upcoming memoir "Dogs, Boys, and Other Things I've Cried About," Klee knew she had to make time for Gracie when Muddy Paws Rescue called her for help.

"I really was not planning on taking another foster dog for at least a couple of weeks," she said in the TikTok video from @simonsits, revealing how her friend from Muddy Paws asked for her assistance in getting Gracie a home after over 100 days of "zero adoption interest." "She is an older Chihuahua, she is blind, and she also has diabetes, so I understand why some people might be a little bit hesitant."

Despite these challenges, Klee fell in love with Gracie. She's decided to foster the pretty pup to show what a wonderful family member she would make for the right home.

The canine cutie welcomed Klee with a wag of her tail and a sweet smile, showing off her gentle disposition. The famous foster mom shared how to administer Gracie's insulin with a syringe, which the Chi received while happily having some treats. Klee couldn't wait to bring Gracie home for some much-needed snuggling.

Treatment for Diabetes in Dogs

There is no specific known cause for canine diabetes. It can afflict any dog regardless of age, breed, or health. Unspayed females, seniors, obese dogs, dogs with Cushing’s disease, or dogs with pancreatitis are at a higher risk for diabetes.

The main treatment for canine diabetes is insulin injections, usually given twice per day. While many people may be intimidated by this practice, the needles are relatively tiny and most dogs aren't bothered when they receive them.

Diabetic dogs benefit from high-fiber diets with certain levels of fat, protein, and carbohydrates to maintain optimal blood sugar levels. They sometimes require prescription food from a veterinarian.

Dogs with diabetes can live very normal, healthy lives when the right treatment is provided. Gracie is already coming out of her shell under Klee's care and showing the joy she could bring to a loving family.

The reality is often very different, according to Nita Vasudevan, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance. “Bullmastiffs look intimidating, but a Bullmastiff's personality is calm and affectionate,” she says.

That doesn’t mean a Bullmastiff will just roll over and let an intruder come into your home, though. “They’re natural protectors, but not aggressive without reason,” Vasudevan says. "This breed tends to be pretty low-energy at home. Plus, they’re especially good with kids when properly trained and socialized." So, it's no wonder these gentle giants are considered loyal and loving watchdogs.

But this fluffy pooch is very sweet, according to vets. “Great Pyrenees are calm, independent and protective by instinct,” Vasudevan says. "However, they are considered low aggression guard dogs as this dog was originally bred to guard livestock, so they’re instinctually watchful, but not aggressive. With their family, they’re gentle and affectionate, though a little more reserved than some other breeds, so early socialization is important so their protective nature stays balanced.”

If you get one of these gentle giants, it's good to train them early. "It’s important to teach them which activities can be threatening and which, like the mailman, are completely normal," according to Aimee Warner, DVM, resident veterinarian at Waggel.

While Warner says that the German Shepherd’s protective side is real, it’s not necessarily linked with aggression. “It is more likely to be represented by loyalty, attentiveness and an intense desire to be near and around their people,” she says. "German Shepherd are also highly trainable and eager to please, which only adds to its allure. One more thing to note, is that they are very good with kids, making them one of the safest guard dogs for children."

It’s helpful if we can understand our cats’ feelings and emotions as evidenced by their behavior so that we can respond appropriately, helping them when needed."

When you know the signs your cat is lonely and depressed, you can be more empathetic toward your pet and engage with them in a way that fills their cup. To help you know how you can make your cat feel less lonely, as well as to show you what some common behaviors of lonely cats are, read on. Dr. Hunt shares several red flags that are your cat is internally meowing to you, "Lonely, I am so lonely."

It's entirely possible for your cat to feel isolated and lonely. The heartbreaking signs your cat is lonely are hard to notice. But when you do recognize them, you can take steps to help your kitty feel their best. Here are some common ways Dr. Hunt says your cat may be telling you that they could use a little more love and engagement.

1. Being Clingy

An indoor cat experiencing loneliness will often seek out constant attention, raising questions like, “Is my cat lonely or just just affectionate?” Dr. Hunt explains that cats may reach out and latch onto humans or other pets in the home in an attempt to fill their need for companionship. "It’s normal for affectionate cats to follow you from room to room in the house, to sit on your lap when you’re seated, and to sleep in your bed with you," Dr. Hunt says.

However, pet parents should pay attention to changes in cat behavior. So, if you’re wondering “Is my cat being clingy because of loneliness?” the answer may depend on frequency and intensity. When clinginess becomes excessive or suddenly increases, it can be a sign of cat anxiety or loneliness in cats. "An excessive degree of clinginess that is not typical for that cat suggests that the cat may be feeling lonely," Dr. Hunt says.

To help reduce clinginess caused by cat loneliness or anxiety, start by creating gentle independence-building routines. Encourage your cat to spend short periods alone with enriching activities like puzzle feeders, treat toys, or window perches to help reduce attention-seeking behavior in indoor cats. Increasing structured daily playtime can also help.

2. Having accidents outside the litterbox

Unlike their canine counterparts, healthy cats are often quick studies in the housebreaking department. Therefore, if your cat starts pooping or peeing outside of the litterbox, Dr. Hunt says it's a signal that something is up and could be a sign your cat is lonely. However, it's vital not to immediately make that conclusion and to take your cat to the vet to see if there's a medical issue first. "In the absence of a medical cause, litter box accidents are a cat’s way of expressing that it is unhappy about something in the home," Dr. Hunt notes.

Also, Dr. Hunt reveals that cats often have accidents because of changes in the home, like bullying behavior from another pet. If none of those check out? Dr. Hunt says that loneliness could be the culprit.

If litter box accidents are happening because of cat loneliness or emotional stress, the goal is to help your cat feel more secure, stimulated, and socially engaged. Start by increasing daily interaction and bonding time. More consistent play sessions, gentle attention, and predictable routines can help reduce cat loneliness and anxiety-related behavior, including inappropriate elimination.

3. Scratching furniture

Another signs your cat is lonely? They may scratch on furniture. To be clear, though, scratching is a normal, instinctual and necessary for cats. However, not all scratching is normal.

"Cats normally scratch in order to shed layers from their claws and to mark territory," Dr. Hunt explains. "Though, cats that are upset or sad may purposefully destroy things, including furniture, by scratching or biting it," Dr. Hunt states. "Owners may see this in extreme cases of loneliness."

To help reduce destructive scratching in cats, start by providing appropriate outlets for this natural behavior. Place multiple scratching posts or pads around your home, especially in areas where your cat already tends to scratch furniture.

4. Being vocal

If you've been asking yourself lately, "Why is my cat meowing more?" or "Why is my indoor cat more vocal than usual?” this might be your cat communicating its lonely. This may be a sign that your cat is lonely that is not just hurting your heart, but also your ears. Since cats can't speak, they sure can make noise to let you know they need some extra TLC. "Sometimes, excessive vocalization is associated with loneliness or unhappiness.," Dr. Hunt says. "Cats that are upset may yowl at any time of day, or be excessively vocal, particularly when the owner is returning home," Dr. Hunt says.

To help decrease excessive meowing in a lonely cat, start by increasing daily interaction and play. Short, structured play sessions using wand toys or interactive games can help release energy and reduce attention-seeking vocal behavior in indoor cats.

5. They stop eating

A loss of appetite in cats can sometimes be linked to cat loneliness, stress, or emotional distress, particularly in indoor cats who lack stimulation or companionship. Dr. Hunt explains that when cats feel a certain way, it can directly impact their eating habits. “Upset, sad or very lonely cats may become despondent, negatively affecting their appetite,” Dr. Hunt reports. “This should be interpreted in light of what is normal for that particular cat.”

To help a lonely or stressed cat regain their appetite, start by creating a calm, quiet feeding environment. Reducing noise, distractions, and household activity during mealtimes can help encourage eating in cats experiencing cat anxiety or behavioral changes.

6. They eat more

On the flip side, cat loneliness may also show up as an increase in appetite. In some cases, emotional distress in cats can lead to overeating as a coping behavior, especially in indoor cats that lack stimulation or companionship. "Cats that are lonely or mourning the loss of a companion may also overeat," Dr. Hunt states. "Again, this should be interpreted as compared to what is normal for that cat."

To help manage stress-related overeating in cats, start by introducing more structured daily routines. Feeding your cat at consistent times and using portion-controlled meals can help regulate appetite and make them eat more regularly.

7. Playing less

Kitties are more playful than we give them credit for. Dr. Hunt says one of the most heartbreaking signs your cat is lonely is fewer bids for impromptu playdates with you. In these cases, many pet parents ask, “Why is my cat not playing anymore?” The answer may be linked to cat loneliness, boredom, or emotional distress. In fact, when a usually active cat stops engaging in toys, exploration, or interaction, it may signal changes in their emotional wellbeing or possible cat anxiety and low mood.

"Cats that are sad, lonely or mourning the loss of a companion may lie around the house instead of engaging in play or exploration," Dr. Hunt shares. "They may act like they generally have less energy than they usually do."

One of the best ways to help reduce cat loneliness is to increase daily interaction. This can include structured play sessions, using wand toys, or introducing puzzle feeders to provide mental stimulation for indoor cats. These activities help prevent boredom and support healthier cat behavior and enrichment.

When Kendall's neighbor got evicted, she left something priceless behind in her hustle to leave. Not furniture. Not boxes. A cat.

The endearing TikTok from @bluandlucky tells a story that's equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful. Kendall discovered that her neighbor had abandoned the sweetest cat inside the locked apartment, leaving it alone to die.

For days, Kendall fed the cat under the door—sliding food through the gap to keep it alive while she tried desperately to get help from anyone. She called animal shelters, animal control, police, firefighters, and even the property management. Nobody would help.

"Nobody cared except for me," Kendall explained. The property management wouldn't even open the door.

But Kendall isn't stopping at just rescuing Lucky. She's creating a petition with the goal of turning it into a bill and eventually a law in California. "California laws suck and I want to change that. Coming soon," she wrote.

How Small Acts of Kindness Can Change Pets' Lives

Kendall's story proves what the American Humane Society emphasizes: small acts of kindness create lasting change. Feeding a neighbor’s cat under a door for days doesn't sound very heroic, but it saved Lucky's life. I’m sure to Lucky, she’s the biggest hero.

According to the American Humane Society, everyday moments add up more than big sweeping gestures. "Whether it is adopting, fostering, choosing Humane Certified products or sharing an animal's story, small acts help build a world rooted in care and compassion."

Kendall did all of this—she refused to give up, found resources through social media, and is now sharing Lucky's story to inspire legal change.

And if Kendall has anything to say about it, no other animal in California will struggle like Lucky did either.

There are dogs who hear a question and think about it for a second. And then there's Cashew, a Maltipoo who hears half a sentence and immediately commits to a full performance, like she's auditioning for something very serious and very dramatic. TikTok user @thecashewbrand shared the hilariously cute clip of the Maltipoo dancing, and in it, the dog pops up and spins on her back legs like a tiny, fluffy ballerina who has been waiting her entire life for this exact cue. The best part is that her mom doesn't even get to finish the sentence. The cucumber becomes completely irrelevant. Cashew has already decided what the moment is about, and it's all about performance. Honestly, same.

People in the comments immediately clocked it. One person wrote, “Petition for a tutu,” which feels less like a joke and more like a very reasonable next step. The event kicks off at 12 a.m. Pacific on Monday, May 11. In other time zones that's 1 a.m. Mountain on May 11, 2 a.m. Central, and 3 a.m. Eastern.

In the video, the camera starts on the chicken coop, where the chickens are doing exactly what you would expect during an absolute downpour. Then it pans to the right, and there he is, just standing out in the rain like he personally asked for this weather event. Not hurrying. Not sheltering. Not reconsidering his choices. Just planted there in the storm with the kind of confidence usually reserved for people who own all-terrain jackets and call bad weather “refreshing.”

It's already hilarious before the sound kicks in.

But then the clip uses audio from Forrest Gump, the part where Lieutenant Dan is out there battling the storm, and suddenly the whole thing becomes art. Real cinema. I'm 43 and can confirm that this film has lost none of its power. If anything, it hits harder when you're older and have loved more animals.

One person wrote, “The waterworks started at the part the boy said, ‘He’s not coming, he’s too old,’ baby, when he hobbles up that hill… wrecked!” Correct. Completely wrecked. There are a lot of comparisons between kids and certain pets, and it makes sense. Human children need solid routines, regular schedules, rules, and dedicated bonding time with Mom and/or Dad, and it's the same thing with high-maintenance dogs, cats, and even birds. Living in Charlie's world means waking Dad up at the crack of dawn (because playtime is life) while the spare human films from a safe distance. Luckily, Dad knows he's the favorite pet parent and takes it all on the chin to keep his little toddler bird happy.

This busy boy spends all of his free time waiting for Dad to come home from work, wake up, or stop whatever he's doing to play, dance, and rock out together. If Mom tries to interject, Charlie gives her a warning to back off!

Age is nothing but a number when it comes to Charlie. He may be 26, but his heart is all excited kid if it involves Dad. Sometimes he'll cave and give Mom some love, but it's rare.

Birds as intelligent as Charlie really are compared to human toddlers, and it's because they're as smart as 3- to 4-year-olds in terms of cognitive ability, comprehension, and complex problem-solving skills. It's pretty amazing what all the things they're capable of understanding.

With that, they should be treated with the same level of care, including having a routine to keep them on track. Consistent morning routines help reduce anxiety, make them feel safe, loved, and secure, and keep behavior in check. Just like toddlers, Cockatoos need structure, and it begins with the morning schedule, setting the tone for the day.

So, while Charlie's mom and dad wish they could sleep late and take a more casual approach to the day, it's not happening on Charlie's watch. His house, his rules!

If you've ever loved a dog through mobility loss, you know how hard it is to watch them miss out on the things they once loved. I've been there with large dogs later in life, and it never gets easier.

And when it's an activity like swimming, something they used to light up over, it hits even harder.

But for these beautiful German Shepherds living with degenerative myelopathy, or DM, they’re not missing out.

Not even close.

Their dad found a simple way to help them stay in the water, and the result is something special to watch.

Using nothing more than a pool noodle, this dog dad gives his pups the extra support they need to stay afloat, letting them paddle, splash, and move in ways that still feel natural.

And the difference? You can see it immediately.

They're not struggling. They're not sitting it out. They're right there in the water, doing what they love.

For dogs dealing with mobility challenges, that kind of support can make a huge difference. And just as it does for us, the weightlessness in the water likely brings them some relief while still allowing them to move and stay active.

Degenerative Myelopathy in Dogs Causes Progressive Loss of Mobility

Degenerative myelopathy, often shortened to DM, is a progressive neurological condition that affects a dog's spinal cord. According to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, it gradually impairs coordination and mobility, especially in the hind legs. Other conditions, like IVDD, can cause similar challenges, which is why low-impact movement like swimming is often recommended when possible.

And that's exactly what makes this so special.

These dogs aren't being defined by what they've lost. They're still in the water, still moving, still getting to enjoy something that clearly means everything to them.

One person joked, "The inventor of pool noodles had no idea they were going to make something this useful. Best thing since sliced bread? Nah—best thing since pool noodles."

Even though these beautiful German Shepherds have a disability, their family focuses on what’s still possible. And they make sure their boys get to enjoy what they love most.

Niall Harbison saves countless street dogs through his Thailand rescue organization, Happy Doggo, and works tirelessly to heal and rehabilitate these abused and abandoned canines. Many of them come from horrific living conditions and deal with medical and behavioral challenges, yet these dogs transform under the care of Harbison and his team.

Buster the Pit Bull is just one of Harbison's many rescue success stories. The precious pooch was held captive on a short chain for most of his life until Harbison came along and helped him flourish.

The Instagram video from @wearehappydoggo shared Buster's story.

"They called him 'vicious' and left him on a chain," the onscreen text read as Buster stood on a cement floor surrounded by debris and chained to a wall. "He spent his life tied up, feared by everyone. But we saw something different."

Harbison immediately bonded with Buster and saw the fur baby's sweet and loving spirit. The pretty Pittie showed his gentle and kind demeanor as soon as he came to Happy Doggo.

"When he arrived at the rescue, we saw the truth immediately," the caption explained. "There wasn’t a mean bone in his body — just a dog who had never been given a chance to be one."

Buster Found His Person

After spending some time with Harbison and his Happy Doggo team, Buster was ready for a forever home and adopted by a woman named Kitty. The two have been inseparable ever since.

The Instagram video shared clips of the two snuggling and Buster covering Kitty with kisses. The canine cutie's mom is committed to giving him a life of love and joy.

"Now he's living a life he always deserved," the story continued as Buster enjoyed a fancy beverage, ran in the grass, and nibbled on a yummy dairy dessert. The friendly fur baby traded that restrictive chain for "car rides, beach days, and ice cream" thanks to his devoted mom.

The post included other highlights of Buster lying on his back for a belly rub and cuddling with a stuffed animal. "There's nothing to fear from this gentle giant," the story concluded as Buster peacefully slept, safe and happy in his forever home.

I am scared of the ocean. Bodies of water in general aren't for me, but I love marine life. I love to admire them from afar, on video, or in aquariums. You just never know what's going to happen to you in the ocean!

Like, what if a whale shark creeps up on you while you're swimming? That's exactly what happened to one swimmer recently, and even though it was definitely a little scary, it was also pretty awesome:

A woman in the Philippines got an unexpected surprise when a massive whale shark approached unnoticed and nudged her arm while she posed for underwater photos.

Fox News shared this clip of a woman in the Philippines. She didn't see the whale shark when she started swimming, which is a feat: these creatures are absolutely massive!

She was minding her business, posing for a photo underwater, when the whale shark swam up on her like it was no big deal. It even nudged her arm, which is the coolest part: I wish I knew what a whale shark feels like!

After it nudged her, it went back to doing its own thing, swimming away like it didn't just give her the biggest fright of her life! It didn't even seem to mind bumping into her; I wonder if this happens a lot. It seems like a pretty touristy area.

This is really cool, but it's also really dangerous. Ultimately, she's lucky she wasn't hurt! It wouldn't have been her fault; she didn't provoke the whale shark in any way, but things still could have ended badly.

Whale sharks are not dangerous or aggressive toward humans under normal circumstances. If you provoke them or try to mess with their calves, they will get defensive, but it's highly unlikely that a whale shark would go after you otherwise. However, that doesn't mean they're not dangerous. You could get hurt if:

• It hits you with its tail.
• It pushes you too hard.
• It breaches the surface, creating dangerous waves.

Though whale sharks are gentle giants, it's best to avoid getting too close if you see them in the water. They don't know their own strength, and you just never know what might happen. Thank goodness all this whale shark wanted was a photo bomb!

On April 17, Camy, a thoroughbred maiden mare, gave birth to her first filly. The foal was absolutely perfect in every way except one—she was born sleeping.

For any mare, especially a first-time mother, the loss is completely devastating. But less than 48 hours later, Camy got a second chance at motherhood.

The endearing TikTok from @whoopsanothervetbill explains the situation: "The vet gave us the clear to offer her as a nurse mare; less than 48 hours later, we received a message of a local colt (owned by a complete stranger) who had lost his mom due to a birthing complication."

That colt was Arlo, a standardbred whose mother died during his birth. His humans rushed to get him to Camy as quickly as possible. And when the two met? Camy was immediately smitten with the foal.

The video shows Camy with baby Arlo, who—as one commenter very accurately noted—looks like "a giraffe calf" with his long, wobbly legs. Someone standing off-camera asks, "Is that your baby?" and Camy appears to nod.

Two completely devastating losses, share one healing bond.

That last comment sums it up. Because it is both of those things at once.

How Animals Heal After Loss

Research in evolutionary biology, cognitive biology, and social neuroscience supports what anyone who's ever loved an animal already knows: animals make rich, deep emotional connections. They experience many of the same emotions we do; fear, anger, excitement—and grief.

According to Colorado State University's Veterinary Health Network, animals display grief just like humans. Their eating habits may change—loss of appetite or waiting for the deceased animal at meal times. Sleeping patterns may shift—they may sleep in unfamiliar places or where the deceased used to rest. Bonding behaviors change too—some animals become clingy, others isolate, some show searching behavior.

Wild animals express grief by vocalizing, wandering aimlessly, and eventually reorganizing their pack structure. It’s very primal. There is no nonchalant way to experience grief. Domestic animals go through very similar processes.

For Camy, becoming a nurse mare gave her something to look forward to and a purpose to survive her grief: a baby to care for. A reason to keep her milk flowing, her maternal instincts engaged, her heart healing.

For Arlo, Camy gave him what he needed the most to survive: a mother.

They're learning this together. And in the process, two broken hearts are mending—one orphaned colt and one grieving mare at a time.
