Senior Husky Who's 'Never Been in a Shelter' Longs for a Second Chance at Happiness
Many dogs have a difficult time in shelters due to the chaotic environment and unfamiliarity. It's even more challenging for senior canines since they may be dealing with health issues and most likely spent most of their lives in an actual home. The transition can be quite traumatic for them, so finding these dogs a forever home is a top priority.
Herman is a beautiful 10-year-old Husky currently at Butts County Animal Services in Jackson, Georgia. The senior pup was found abandoned and is struggling with the stressful surroundings of shelter life.
@ ♬ -In the TikTok from @rescueme_atl, Herman nervously paced and sadly howled in his small kennel.
"POV: Sitting with a confused senior Husky who's never been in a shelter before," the on-screen text read.
The post shared Herman's story and how he ended up at Butts County Animal Services.
"They found him standing alone on a dirt road," the caption explained. "No house in sight. No person looking for him. Just a 10-year-old Husky, somehow ending up here."
The heartbreaking scene showed how stressed Herman felt, where he paced and pawed at the bars that kept him inside the small space. The rescue organization had no background information on the sweet Husky and had no idea how he wound up on his own.
"Whether he was looking for home or whether home was already gone," the story continued. "But now he’s here, confused, separated from everything that makes him a Husky, behind this heavy door."
Older Dogs Have Lower Adoption RatesPotential pet parents are hesitant to adopt senior dogs due to possible health conditions and limited lifespan. These older pooches spend more time in shelters than younger dogs and receive fewer shares and engagements in online adoption listings.

Along with medical concerns, graying fur and a "grumpy" stereotype can be a deterrent to adopters. Yet in reality, these loving dogs are usually housebroken, calmer, and easier to manage than puppies. Senior dogs have a grateful spirit and make a wonderful addition to families.
Hopefully, Herman will soon get the second chance at happiness that he deserves.

We Asked 3 Dog Trainers What Your Dog’s “Bad” Behavior Means—and They All Said the Same Thing
Your dog stole your favorite shoes, barked nonstop while you were on a work call or had an accident in the house—so when you get home, it makes sense that as a pet parent your first thought might be: “Why is my dog being so bad?” or "Why is my dog misbehaving?" But according to dog trainers, those are usually the wrong questions to be pondering.
You see, dogs aren’t trying to punish you by acting out because you did something that hurt their feelings or made them mad. Those frustrating canine behaviors are often your dog’s way of communicating to you something is wrong, something is missing or they need your help. After all, they can't just call you up or tap on your shoulder and tell you directly.
“Dog moms and dads naturally assign human emotions, traits and motivations to their dogs because they love them and feel like they are a part of our family,” says Bridget Murphy, CEO of Koru K9 Dog Training. “But dogs generally aren’t sitting around plotting revenge because you left for work or forgot their favorite treat.”
The truth? Your dog’s “bad” behavior may be telling you something important. We asked three dog trainers: What is your dog really trying to tell you when they misbehave? Their answer was surprisingly consistent. See what they had to say, below.

Your Dog Isn’t Being “Bad”—They’re Trying to Address Something A dog acting out trying to express something to its pet parent. Many dog owners assume unwanted behaviors—like chewing, barking, hiding objects or getting into things they shouldn’t—mean their dog is being stubborn, defiant or trying to cause trouble. But trainers say that’s a human interpretation of behavior, not how dogs actually think.
“Humans naturally assign human emotions, traits and motivations to our dogs because we love them and feel like they are a part of our family,” says Bridget Murphy, CEO of Koru K9 Dog Training. “But dogs generally aren’t sitting around plotting revenge because we left for work or forgot their favorite treat.”
Dogs don’t understand consequences and emotions the same way people do. They aren’t thinking about how to frustrate their owners, they’re responding to what they’re experiencing in the moment.
Because dogs can’t explain what they need with words, their behavior becomes their way of communicating. The challenge for pet parents is learning how to understand those signals.

The One Thing Every Dog Trainer Agrees Your Dog Is Trying to Tell YouAfter speaking with three dog trainers, one message was clear: Your dog’s “bad” behavior is often their way of saying, “I need help.”
Your dog may be trying to communicate that they’re stressed, afraid, bored, confused, uncomfortable or dealing with an unmet need. What looks like misbehavior is often a signal that something is wrong.
“When a dog chews a shoe after you've been gone all day, they're typically communicating that something isn't right rather than trying to punish their owner,” Murphy says.
It makes sense when you think about it—how else can a dog let us know that they're in pain or need something ASAP?
“Unfortunately, our dogs cannot speak to us directly and so can only communicate via their behavior,” says Annie-Mae Levy, CFBA, professional dog trainer at Woofz. “When we keep failing to meet our dogs’ needs, behavioral fallout follows.”
Our experts note that some problems that your pet might need help with include:
- Boredom
- Anxious feelings
- Discomfort
- Fear
- Pain or illness
For what it's worth, pets communicate with one another through actions, too, Murphy adds. It's natural—and even nurtured by us humans. "What humans often call 'bad behavior 'is often just the most effective way a dog learned to get what they need," says Shir Limazati, CPDT-KA, a trainer with Another Chance Training. "If sitting quietly and patiently did not work for them, but barking incessantly got someone's attention, then, from the dog's perspective, barking is the necessary behavior."

5 Reasons Your Dog Is Acting Out A dog not knowing how to communicate with its owner.Getty Images Kenneth Sutherland
If your dog is acting out and needs help with something, how do you know what it is? Trainers shared the five most common reasons behind "bad" pet behavior.
1. They need more exerciseDoes you dog need more exercise? Some dog breeds, for instance, were developed to work, and Levy says their descendants still need regular physical activity to stay their best, most settled selves.
"When these needs are not met, dogs may become destructive, restless, vocal or hyperactive," Levy says. "In my experience, owners often underestimate how much exercise their dog requires, particularly if they choose a working breed without fully understanding what they're signing up for."
Researching breeds, talking to vets and discussing your lifestyle with breeders and rescue/shelter staff can help you make the best choice for the pup (and yourself!).
2. They're bored"Exercise alone is rarely enough," Levy says. Dogs want to solve problems, use their noses and learn new skills throughout the day. Though sometimes they aren't able to and that can cause them to act out.
"Without this daily mental stimulation, fallout behaviors such as chewing, digging, barking and hyperactivity often become an outlet for all that mental energy and frustration," Levy says.
Puzzle toys, agility courses and lick pads are all ways to increase mental stimulation in dogs.
3. They're confusedInconsistent communication can throw our furry off and cause them to act in ways we don't want. For instance, Limazati says that using different cues for the same outcome (like "down" and "off" to ask a dog to move away from the table) is understandably confusing. Ditto for letting a dog on furniture—except when a certain person is visiting.
"When a dog doesn’t know what works, they just keep trying different things until something does," Limazati says. "With no positive and consistent guidance, those unwanted behaviors tend to come out."
4. They're in pain or sickLimazati says medical pain or discomfort is the most common reason she sees for changes in pet behavior, including arthritis, dental pain and urinary infections. But it's also the most regularly missed.
"Dogs rarely show pain in obvious ways," Limazati says. "When a behavior shows up suddenly or escalates out of the blue, the first step is always to schedule a thorough veterinary exam to rule out pain or illness."
5. They need connectionOur pups love us, and they're social creatures, but people sometimes overlook these needs in their hectic lives and dogs try to get their pet parent's attention in ways that may not be the best.
"Many dogs thrive on interaction with their people," Murphy says. "Some behaviors that appear demanding or annoying may actually be attempts to reconnect, seek reassurance, or ask for engagement."
Murphy stresses it doesn't usually take much to please your four-legged companion. A few short periods of focused interaction, training, play or affection can make a massive difference for many furry family members.

How to Read Your Dog’s Behavior Like a TrainerYour dog's behavior offers clues about how they're feeling physically and emotionally, but trainers say it's important to look at the whole picture, not just the behavior itself.
"Behavior is rarely random," Limazati says. "It’s usually connected to context. Changed behavior is vital information for you and a reason to pause and dig deeper into what your dog is trying to communicate to you."
Rather than focusing on one behavior in isolation, trainers recommend paying attention to your dog's body language, the situation they're in and whether the behavior is new or out of character. Those clues can help you determine whether your dog is relaxed, overwhelmed, frustrated or in need of medical attention.
For example, Limazati says calm behavior, relaxed body language and soft, loose eyes usually mean your dog feels safe and comfortable. On the other hand, frequent vocalization, lunging, snapping or retreating can signal that they're scared, stressed, bored or overwhelmed.
"Behavior is also one of the first symptoms of your dog not feeling well, or experiencing changes to their physical health," Limazati notes.

What to Do When Your Dog Shows “Bad” BehaviorOnce you understand what your dog is trying to communicate, the next step is knowing how to respond. Trainers say punishment often focuses on stopping the behavior without addressing the reason behind it.
1. Take a pauseAs long as safety isn't an issue, Limazati suggests taking a beat and asking yourself: Is this a learned nuisance behavior that a dog knows can get your attention? Is my dog trying to survive? A moment of reflection can help you figure out the answers.
"Pausing may not sound like a type of response, but in truth, it is necessary," Limazati says. "Some of the most common mistakes pet parents make are reacting without thought behind their reaction. This creates more frustration and tension and can be exhausting."
2. Rule out medical issuesMurphy stresses that it's crucial to seek veterinarian assistance for any sudden or drastic behavior changes.
"Pain, illness, cognitive changes and discomfort can all contribute to behavior problems," Murphy says. "Addressing medical concerns early not only improves a pet's quality of life but can also prevent unnecessary stress for both the pet and the owner."
3. Meet the need behind the behaviorMurphy gets it. You want to stop the "bad" behavior. But she suggests determining what the dog needs: More exercise? Take them for a walk. Anxious, bored or in need of connection? Try toys, pets and praise. Uncomfortable? Talk to the vet if you haven't already.
"When we address the underlying need, the behavior often improves naturally," Murphy says. "In many cases, our pets aren't trying to give us a hard time—they're simply having a hard time themselves."
4. Reinforce what you want to see more ofInstead of focusing only on what your pet does "wrong," be sure to praise what they do well with a treat or a marker like "Yes!" (or both).
"Animals repeat behaviors that work for them," Levy says. "[Positive reinforcement] makes those behaviors more likely to be repeated while building the pet's understanding of how to please you."
5. Seek helpLevy says behavior problems are easier to work on if you catch and address them early, before they become habits. Getting a professional trainer or behaviorist can help this process. Your pup's vet can help.
"Early intervention can prevent small problems from developing into much larger ones," Levy says.

‘Miss Thing’ confirmed her vibe. ‘Jolene Toebean’ is confirmed as her name. Both are correct.
The rest of the comments arrived in various states of emotional distress:
"That's the cutest thing I have ever seen in my life. 😭"
"And she's a patched tabby?? She's so special and perfect"
"I'm raising a rescue kitten, and she will shove her entire paw in her mouth 😭"
Confirmed. This is just what kittens do. Jolene Toebean is simply more efficient about it.
"Oh my.. goodness! So precious ❤️"
She's been alive for one day, and she's already working her bonus features like a pro. But what exactly are they and why do some cats get them?
Why Are Some Kittens Born With Extra Toes? Here's the science behind Jolene Toebean's bonus feature.
According to PetMD, most cats are born with 18 toes — five on each front paw and four on each back paw but some have more. Polydactyl cats are born with extras. It comes from a dominant gene, which means only one parent needs to carry it for kittens to be born with more toes than usual. The extra toes don't cause pain or health problems in most cases, and polydactyl cats generally live completely normal, healthy lives. They're just born with some extra toes.
Maine Coons and those extra toes have a long history together. The trait was once so common in the breed that many early Maine Coons had it. Breeders moved away from polydactylism for show standards over time, but it's still a genetic feature beloved by Maine Coon fans everywhere. A polydactyl Maine Coon is also known as a ‘mitten cat’ because the extra toes give their paws a wide mitten-like look that's absolutely one of the most adorable things in the cat world.
The most famous extra-toe connection is Ernest Hemingway's. He received a six-toed cat as a gift and ended up loving polydactyl cats so much that his home in Key West still houses dozens of their descendants today. They're often called Hemingway cats in honor of him.
Jolene Toebean is one day old, and she's already carrying on a very distinguished tradition.
She figured out her bonus features on day one. She's going to be just fine.

This 160-Year-Old Dog Breed Is Known for Its Friendly Personality
For more than 160 years, Golden Retrievers have been winning hearts with one quality dog lovers can’t resist: their famously friendly personality. This beloved breed remains a favorite among families, veterinarians and dog lovers alike.
The Golden Retriever has consistently ranked among the American Kennel Club’s most popular dog breeds, but its appeal goes far beyond popularity. Experts say the breed’s gentle temperament, devotion and natural ability to form strong bonds are what have made it such a treasured family dog for generations.
Veterinarians say those qualities are a big part of why Golden Retrievers continue to be such beloved pets year after year. Jo Myers, DVM, a veterinary advisor at Vetster, has both professional and personal experience with the breed, having raised a Golden Retriever while her children were younger.
“He was a delightful member of our family,” she says. “The best way I can describe his approach to life was, ‘Oh! This is my favorite thing!’ Going for a walk? His favorite thing. Riding in the car? His favorite thing. Taking a nap? His favorite thing. Getting his nails trimmed or having blood drawn? Apparently also his favorite thing.”
Aimee Warner, DVM, resident veterinarian at Waggel, agrees that Golden Retrievers are one of the easiest dogs to love and connect with on a deeper level. “They are easy dogs to love because they give so much back,” she says.
From the history that shaped their reputation to the traits that make Golden Retrievers such devoted dogs, here’s why this breed has remained a favorite for generations—and what potential pet parents should know.

Why Golden Retrievers Are Known as One of the Friendliest Dog Breeds A Golden Retriever puppy shows off the breed’s playful personality.Getty Images Image taken in Ontario, Canada
The Golden Retriever’s reputation for being social, kind and having a loving spirit goes back to its origins as a working dog. “Golden Retrievers have been bred as hunting companions and retrievers,” says Chyrle Bonk, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance. “This required that they be devoted to their people, cooperative, willing to please and non-aggressive.”
Over generations, those qualities helped shape a breed that enjoys being around people, working closely with them and making their owners happy, Bonk says.Myers echoes that. “Over generations, selective breeding helped make those tendencies part of the breed’s general reputation,” she says.
Because of this, these pups are usually thought of as people's best friend if they have one.
How Golden Retrievers Went From Hunting Dogs to Beloved Companions Golden Retrievers are known for forming strong bonds with their pet parents.Golden Retrievers’ journey from working dogs to family pets is a big reason they became one of America’s most beloved dog breeds. Originally developed in Scotland in the 1800s as skilled hunting and retrieving dogs, Goldens were valued for their intelligence, trainability and ability to work closely with people, qualities that would later help shape their reputation as friendly, devoted dogs.
Over time, those same attributes helped Golden Retrievers transition from hunting dogs to trusted household pets. Their cheerful, loyalness and people-oriented nature, combined with their expressive faces and big hearts helped turn them into one of the most sought-after breeds, Warner says. “Their popularity comes from that lovely mix of warmth, intelligence and enthusiasm,” she says. “A Golden often seems delighted just to be involved, whether that is going for a walk, sitting in the kitchen while you cook or greeting someone at the door. That is why people often see them as a constant presence rather than a dog in the background."
Beyond their wonderful temperament, these sweet dogs are also known for their beautiful coats, which have added to their appeal. “Golden Retrievers are very attractive and come in a variety of golden shades that further increase people's obsession with them over the years,” Bonk says.
The Personality Traits That Make Golden Retrievers So Easy to Love This breed’s history dates back more than a century.Several qualities help explain why Golden Retrievers have such a devoted following. “Personality plays a huge role in loving a Golden,” Bonk says. So what's a Golden Retriever's temperament like? “They draw people in with their goofiness, gentleness and affection, which is why people consider them to be so approachable and friendly,” Banks explains.
Myers says that enthusiasm one of the breed’s standout characteristics as well and that they hardly ever seem to be in bad moods or anti-social. “Many Goldens seem genuinely delighted to participate in whatever is happening,” she says. Myers points out that this breed tends to be very tolerant of nearly anything, even things other breeds usually aren't. “Plenty of veterinary professionals can tell you stories about Goldens who treated an examination, vaccination or blood draw as another exciting social event,” she says.

Why Golden Retrievers Are Considered Great Family Dogs Happy parents and their small daughter cuddling their retriever in the living room.Golden Retrievers have many of the qualities families often look for in a companion dog. “Their typical combination of sociability, trainability, playfulness and interest in people can make Goldens excellent family companions,” Myers says. “My own Golden was part of our family while I was raising children, so I certainly understand the appeal firsthand.”
Warner agrees that Golden Retrievers often make wonderful family pets because of their affectionate, people-focused nature. Their enthusiasm, loyalty and desire to be involved in family life are some of the traits that have helped make them such cherished companions.
Of course, like any dog, each Golden Retriever is an individual and benefits from proper training, socialization and care.
The One Challenge Golden Retriever Owners Should Be Prepared For Goldens have earned a reputation for being friendly, loyal and devoted. While Goldens are considered to be the perfect pet to many, their friendly nature can also mean they get attached to their owners more than other breeds may. As a result, Golden Retrievers are known as “Velcro dogs” because they love staying close to their pet parents and being involved in whatever is happening.
So while their loyalty and desire to be connected to their people is one of the qualities that dog lovers like most about the breed, it also means they may have a hard time being away from their favorite people, which is good to keep in mind if you're considerng adopting one and adding one into your family.
“They like being close to their owners and may even follow them from room to room,” Warner says. “That devotion is part of their charm.”
Their reputation for having no “off switch” often comes from their enthusiasm and eagerness to participate, Warner says. “Some Goldens will keep going for as long as someone is engaging with them, even when they are tired,” she says. “Calm training is just as important as physical exercise, so teaching them to settle after walks, relax on a mat and enjoy quiet enrichment can make a huge difference.”

5 Words That Feel Like Praise to Dogs, According to a Trainer
You may speak your dog's love language, showering them with treats, pets and toys when they're a good girl or boy. Yet, you may want to praise your dog using words of affirmation, especially if that's your love language. But what are the best words to say to your dog and do dogs consider words praise? It turns out, they do and there are certain words dogs love to hear.
"When you deliver praise at just the right moment, that praise begins to tell your dog, 'Hey, that was a good choice I made,'" explains positive reinforcement trainer Shir Limazati, CPDT-KA, of Another Chance Training." Over time, they will begin repeating that behavior again and again."
How exactly do you praise your dog, though? Limazati says you want to say things like "I'm proud of you, pup!" with a positive tone, facial expression and body language, especially if you repeat the word in celebratory moments. "Happy, encouraging and gentle tones help your dog understand they just made a great choice," Limazati notes. "Loud, firm and pressed speech will likely make your dog think they did something wrong."
So if you're a pet parent and wondering how to communicate with your dog, you're in luck because we rounded up 5 words that feel like praise to dogs, according to a trainer. That way, you can use these dog training tips to show affection to your pup and let them know they're doing well.

5 Words That Feel Like Praise to Dogs The right words can help your dog feel loved, praised, and understood.Getty Images Alessandra Sawick
Consistency matters when teaching a dog words. If you want them to know you're motivating them cheering them on, say it when they do something well, like when they come to you when they're called in a busy dog park. Limazati says these are five words that are like a verbal round of applause for your furry companion and are sure to make their tail wag.
1. "Good."What words make dogs feel loved? This classic one-word compliment rolls right off the tongue for most pet parents. Limazati says using it to let a dog know they made the right call is almost instinctual, so your furry friend quickly learns to associate the word with praise. It's also the gift that keeps on giving—for your dog and you as Limazati says dogs will continue to repeat the behaviors that you label as "good" just to hear the term—and your sweet voice—again.
"It’s almost impossible to say "good" without a warm, happy tone," Limazati reveals. "That enthusiasm when a pet parent says 'good boy!' or 'good girl!' is part of what makes them feel so rewarded by dogs."
2. "Yes!"Limazati often use yes as a "marker," which is a word or sound delivered precisely when your dog does what you tell them to. At first, it's followed by a treat. But eventually, dogs are glad to hear the word "yes" by itself and it makes them happy.
"'Yes!' is one of the most common dog praise words because it’s short, consistent and easy for the pet parent to remember," Limazati explains. "With time and repetition, your dog learns that whatever they were doing when you said, 'Yes!' is what earned them that reward."
3. "Thanks!"Believe it or not, it's possible to reward your dog without treats. In fact, experts say you can do so with words dogs like, like "thanks" or "thank you."
"I often use it when a dog makes an unwanted choice, but then redirects to a better decision all on their own," Limazati says.
For instance, she'll use it when a dog starts to pick up a shoe in the hallway but pauses and looks at her. Then the dog drops the shoe and walks away. Cue the enthusiastic "thank you."
"Dogs may not understand the literal words, but they absolutely understand the emotion behind them," Limazati reports. "Your proud, encouraging and warm response shows your dog that it was a very good choice. Over time, since dogs are both associative learners and pleasers by nature, they are more likely to make that preferred choice repeatedly."

4. "Nice."When it comes to communicating with your dog, some terms are better to use than others. If you want to strengthen your bond with your dog and make your dog feel loved by what you're saying, Limazati suggests using the word "nice" to praise your pup when they're working hard on something challenging, because it can motivate them to keep going.
"Whether you are introducing a new trick, working through an enrichment puzzle, or even navigating them through an agility course, an encouraging and enthusiastic, 'Nice!' lets your dog know they’re on the right track," Limazati shares. "This is a great praise word to build confidence and persistence, and it keeps the activity at hand fun."
5. "Treat?"What dog doesn't love the word "treat"? Limazati says this is one word dogs understand and know it's a term of praise. In fact, your dog's body language probably lets you know they are happy when you say this.
Limazati notes that the excitement over hearing "treat" comes from a dog's ability to form word associations. Think about it: "Treat" is repeatedly followed by something delicious. Over time, just hearing the word feels like praise to a dog, but go ahead and follow it with something tasty so you don't dash your pup's hopes!

Measuring 10.63 by 7.87 by 4.92 inches, the basket has the right size to fit into smaller spaces while holding plenty of everyday toys. You can fit tennis balls, rope toys, plush toys, rubber chew toys and everything else.

How to Make It Part of Your Dog's RoutineHaving a tidy home is one benefit. But organized toy storage has many more advantages for your pup. When all the toys are in one place, it is easier to rotate them from one week to the next. Rotating toys keeps things interesting for your pup. Instead of playing with the same familiar toys over and over, he gets to see a different collection.
With little training and positive reinforcement, you can also teach your dog to carry toys back to the basket after playtime. That turns cleanup into a simple game that provides mental stimulation for your dog and becomes part of the daily routine.

Cavapoo Sends Dog Dad on Epic Swim Chase After Deciding Recall Commands Are Not for Him
Just like us, dogs love summer adventures. And much like kids having too much fun to listen, even the most well-trained pup can decide the rules don’t apply when the water looks that good.
That’s exactly what happened to Lambeau, a water-loving Cavapoo, during a Fourth of July weekend outing on the lake. After deciding he apparently had “somewhere to be and fast,” Lambeau launched himself from the family boat and began swimming toward open water, completely unfazed by his parents’ calls to come back.
In a July 5 Instagram video shared by @lambeautheleaper, Lambeau can be seen paddling farther and farther from the boat while his dog dad jumps in after him.
View this post on InstagramFortunately, the determined little swimmer became distracted by making circles and swimming donuts in the lake, giving his dog dad a chance to catch up. After an impressive chase, he was finally escorted back to the boat, though it was clear he would’ve happily continued his solo adventure.

Moments like this are exactly why the American Kennel Club recommends all dogs wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating or spending time near open water. Even strong swimmers can tire quickly, and a secure fit can make all the difference. The AKC also notes that some dogs will continue swimming until they reach exhaustion, making close supervision especially important.
Lambeau’s life jacket did its job, and his determined dog dad did, too.
Cavapoo’s Lake Adventure Has Dog Parents Nodding AlongThe hilarious clip had fellow dog parents cracking up in the comments.
“Your dog had the time of his life and is open to doing that again,” wrote @apearlc.
“I get ya, bestie. That’s why mum attaches a long leash to my life jacket when we swim... lol,” added @little_munchkin_cavapoo.
And @fernandothefoodog joked, “Making sure his fad got a swim in...”
Another commenter put it simply: “Glad he had a life vest on!! Dad needs one too!”

If there was any doubt that Lambeau gave his all during the adventure, a second July 5 Instagram post put it to rest. The energetic Cavapoo was fast asleep in the car on the ride home, looking completely exhausted after his lake excursion.
View this post on InstagramAfter sending his dog dad on an unexpected swim and giving his parents quite a scare, it seemed that Lambeau finally decided it was time to rest. Something tells us he'll be ready for his next boating adventure just as soon as he wakes up.
Golden Retriever 'Moos' Like a Cow, and the Internet Is Obsessed
Does your dog make any funny sounds? My friend's dog sounds like he's saying "Mom," and it never fails to delight everyone who hears it. This Golden Retriever named Lucie also has a pretty impressive party trick of her own: she moos like a cow.
While on vacation in Scotland, Lucie and her family visited a farm, where her unusual talent quickly got the cows' attention. As Lucie let out her surprisingly convincing moo, the cows couldn't help but do a double-take. One even seemed convinced Lucie might be her baby! And once you hear her, you'll understand why; she'd fit right in with the herd.
@luciewoosIn all fairness you can see why mama was a bit confused 😂 This was filmed at an @airbnb on the Isle of Bute, Lucie is actually more of a city girl and I can only wish for views like this! ❤️ #goldenretriever #dogs #doggo #funnydog #cutedog
♬ original sound - Lucie WoosLucie's mom joked that her Golden Retriever was confusing cows one moo at a time and shared more in the caption. "In all fairness, you can see why mama was a bit confused LOL! This was filmed at an @airbnb on the Isle of Bute. Lucie is actually more of a city girl."
The video quickly went viral, racking up more than 7.7 million views and thousands of comments, and some of them were very funny. Like @coreyarm, who won more than 220,000 likes when he said what the cow was probably thinking: "Not our baby my *ss!"
Another commenter said what most of us were also thinking: "I’ve never in my 43 years heard a dog moo."

Why Some Dogs Make Unusual Sounds Instead of BarkingWhile barking is the most common way dogs communicate, it's certainly not the only way. Some dogs "talk" using groans, grumbles, howls, whines, yodels, and other unique vocalizations to communicate with both their humans and other dogs.
According to the American Kennel Club, "Many dogs learn that these noises get them certain results and continue to use them to talk to their owners. Dogs learn from repetition and use the noises that work best to get the results they want."
Some dogs simply stumble upon a funny sound that gets a big reaction and happily keep using it. And if that sound happens to be an almost perfect cow impression like Lucie's, we certainly wouldn't complain; we'd be endlessly entertained by it.
2 Male Flamingos at the San Diego Zoo Step up To Parent a Newborn Chick—and Totally Nail It
You don't have to share DNA with a baby to know when you're meant to be their dad.
Two male flamingos at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park proved that beautifully when they were trusted with an egg, hatched a tiny chick, and immediately stepped into fatherhood like they had been preparing for it their entire lives.
Technically, they had practiced.
@pinknews#FromTheArchives Two male flamingos adopted a chick after successfully hatching an egg together at San Diego Zoo Safari Park in California in 2024. Earlier in the year, the same-sex bird couple impressed zookeepers with their parenting skills after they were given a dummy egg to sit on. Eventually, the specialists gave them a real egg, which hatched in September and is now “thriving”. In a social media post, the zoo said that the flamingo couple “has perfected their fatherly duties by alternating brooding responsibilities and keeping the chick satisfied thanks to a hearty helping of crop milk every day”. The pair feed their chick crop “milk” from their upper digestive tract, and that “both males and females can feed the chick this way”, even flamingos that are not the parents. The two foster dads are both in their 40s and are lesser flamingos, a species found in sub-Saharan Africa and western India, according to the zoo. The chick is also a lesser flamingo. But this isn’t the first time a same-sex flamingo couple have become parents to an adopted chick. Also in 2024, Chilean flamingos Curtis and Arthur hatched an egg at a Zoo in the UK, which an expert theorised could have been abandoned by another couple. #flamingo #gaycouplegoals #sandiegozoo #adoption #lgbtq
♬ original sound - PinkNews 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ - PinkNews 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️Earlier in 2024, wildlife care specialists gave the pair a dummy egg after noticing their interest in nesting. The two flamingos took the assignment seriously enough to earn the real thing: a fertile egg that needed devoted foster parents.
They didn't wing it.
The dads took turns sitting on the egg, carefully sharing brooding duties until their chick hatched in September. After that, they moved directly into feeding, protecting, and keeping their fuzzy new family member happy.
The zoo shared that both dads provide crop "milk," a nutrient-rich substance flamingos produce in their upper digestive tract. Male and female flamingos can both make it, which means these two had everything their baby needed.
View this post on InstagramTo me, they sound more organized than most households.
One dad handles the baby while the other gets a break. Then they switch. No discussion about whose turn it is. No pretending not to hear the baby flamingo. Just two experienced birds in their 40s raising a chick together and completely nailing the assignment.
One commenter was less surprised by the parenting and more shaken by the fact that there are flamingos older than they are.
View this post on InstagramI have never even seen a flamingo in real life, and now I'm emotionally invested in the family life of three flamingos living hundreds of miles away. I fully support this union, and I am officially an ally to two of the best dads in California.
Their parenting story is also wonderfully practical. By placing the fertile egg with a pair already eager to nest, the wildlife care team gave another flamingo pair the opportunity to produce and raise an additional chick.
That's not just good parenting.
That's co-parenting with conservation benefits.
And these dads aren't the only same-sex flamingo pair to raise a chick. Other male flamingo couples have successfully cared for eggs and babies, too, including Curtis and Arthur at a zoo in the United Kingdom.
Is Same-Sex Parenting Common in the Animal Kingdom?Same-sex pairs, courtship, bonding, and parenting have been observed across many animal species. The exact behavior varies, but some pairs incubate eggs, foster young, protect nests, or help raise offspring when the opportunity arrives.
Flamingos are well-suited to shared parenting because both adults can incubate an egg and feed a chick. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance explains that flamingo chicks receive crop milk produced in the parents' upper digestive tract.
A few things to know:
- Foster parenting can help more chicks thrive. A capable pair may be given an egg when another bird cannot raise it or when careful egg management supports the flock.
- Good parenting is about behavior. Protecting, feeding, responding, and consistently caring for young are what make these bonds work.
These two flamingo dads were given a chance to prove themselves, and they turned fatherhood into their brightest achievement yet. 🦩

Purina Offers Your Pet a C-Suite Job That Comes With a $25,000 Paycheck
If you've ever looked at your puppy sleeping upside down on the sofa or caught your kitten purring away in your lap and thought, You were born for this, Purina has a contest that might be worth checking out.

The pet food brand's annual Chief Snuggle Officer search is back, accepting applications now for one puppy and one kitten. Each winner will receive a $25,000 "salary." A $10,000 donation will go to a local shelter in each winner's city.
The Competition Is StiffCourtesy Purina
Last year, the inaugural contest attracted more than 4,000 entries from across the country. That made the judges' job quite difficult, but in the end, they managed to find the most deserving winners.
Last year, Pudim, a five-month-old Cavapoo from Kansas who joined his family before Christmas, won the Puppy Chow award. According to his mom, Vanessa, with Pudim, every day brought something new, whether it was a fascination with hair dryers, making funny faces, or tracking down everyone's missing socks.
Ika, a kitty that began her story in a restaurant parking lot in Queens, N.Y., took home the Kitten Chow award. Her parent, YuFei, said, "As cliché as it sounds, we felt we were the chosen ones."

Your Pet Needs More than a Cute PhotoAnyone hoping to earn the title this year should know that a winning application involves much more than uploading an adorable picture. According to Dr. Callie Harris, a veterinary for Purina, the strongest entries combine three important ingredients.
The first one is a compelling story that judges can connect with, involving the pet and the family. Photos and videos are the second criterion, and then, every pet needs a bit of charm that makes people smile the moment they see them.
In other words, authenticity matters as much as the perfect photo.
A Few Rules to Keep in MindIf your household includes both a puppy and a kitten, sadly, you might have to make a difficult decision. Purina allows one entry per pet parent. This keeps the competition fair and allows more families to participate.
The CSO Role in PracticeThe Chief Snuggle Officer has quite a few responsibilities. As Harris explains, their job is to be adorably inspirational. "Last year's winners helped remind pet parents that raising happy, healthy pets starts with good nutrition, proper care, plenty of play, and lots of snuggles," she adds.
The Selection ProcessPet Parents can submit their loved ones at purina.com until July 17, along with a photo, a video, and an interesting story. An independent panel will select six finalists from all the entries, then on Aug. 17, public voting opens for the finalists.
The winners will be announced in early October and receive a $25,000 check. Plus, Purina will donate $10,000 to a shelter in each winner's city.

Multicolored 'Squishmallow' Bernedoodle Puppy 'Dances' With a Blueberry, and It's Hilarious
Puppies are natural charmers with their mounds of puffy fur and insatiable curiosity. These floofy fur babies find wonder in everything they come across and turn the most basic items into some sort of fun adventure. Watching these little pups experience everyday life is pure entertainment.
Oreo the Mini Bernedoodle puppy can turn heads with his s'mores-colored coat, yet it's his interesting approach to a blueberry that caused a buzz.
@oreominibernedoodleIs there something wrong with the blueberry? 🫐 🐶🤩 #funnypuppy #minibernedoodlepuppy #puppymorning #fyp
♬ original sound - OreoIn the TikTok from @oreominibernedoodle, the precious puppy saw a blueberry on the floor and immediately sprang into action. First, he showed off some fancy footwork by literally dancing around the tiny piece of fruit. Then he picked up the fruit with his mouth and just held it there, confused on what to do next.
Oreo dropped the blueberry on the floor, stared at it for a few moments to see if it would move on its own, then broke out in his adorable little dance again. The fur baby flip-flopped between biting and boogieing around the blueberry, putting on quite a performance.
Making it all the more adorable was his wide-eyed expression, cotton ball coat, and childlike enthusiasm over something so tiny.
Followers couldn't take their eyes off the canine cutie and found his excitement contagious:
- "This is the traditional dance of the blueberry. I knew it as soon as the video started," one pointed out.
- "Who knew you could have so much fun with a blueberry?" another asked.
- "Looks like a living stuffed animal," a follower remarked.
- "That is a squishmallow. I will die on this hill," someone declared.
- "I could watch this little guy all day," a fan shared.
Blueberries are safe for dogs to eat and provide benefits to their diet, including:
- High antioxidant capacity, including flavonoids
- High in vitamins C and K to support their immune system
- High in fiber, low in calories, and dense in nutrients
- High water content brings hydration benefits
Small dogs should just have a few blueberries, where large dogs can have approximately 5 to 7. Too many can cause stomach upset. Monitor your dog when they consume blueberries since they can be a choking hazard.
Use only fresh or frozen and unsweetened blueberries rather than canned, sugared or packed in syrup. Blueberry-flavored dog treats are usually a hit as well.
Maybe, like Oreo, your pup will want the blueberry as a toy or dance partner instead of a snack.

For many dogs, water play can be a great way to stay active during the hottest months of the year. According to the ASPCA, pet parents should always provide access to fresh water and be mindful of overheating during periods of hot weather. Signs of heat stress can include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, weakness, and an increased heart rate.
Activities like supervised sprinkler play can help dogs cool off while still enjoying outdoor time, especially as temperatures start to climb.

Newfoundland Mourning the Loss of His Grandma Gets a Surprise He Never Saw Coming
Some dogs don't just love their people.
They choose them.
Chewy, the Newfoundland, had that kind of bond with his grandma. The kind that doesn't need explaining because you can feel it the second you hear the story. She was his person, his comfort, his soulmate, and losing her has clearly been hard on the big guy.
@chewythenewfieMeet Mabel🤍 Named after his grandma's middle name ❤️
♬ Surrender - Natalie TaylorThat's what makes this video so tender before the surprise even begins.
The clip starts with someone carrying in a basket, and inside is the smallest little bean of a puppy. Chewy walks up slowly to meet the new addition, and the whole moment feels like everyone in the room is holding their breath. Not because a puppy can fix grief. Nothing works like that. But because sometimes love shows up in a tiny body when a heart has been carrying something too heavy.
Chewy recently lost his grandma, and his family shared that her final days were filled with love from people all over the world. She spent that time reading hundreds of letters from those who had followed their story, and she knew how deeply she was loved. That detail alone is enough to wreck you.
View this post on InstagramIt also says a lot about the kind of person she must have been.
People online didn't just watch from a distance. They felt connected to her, to Chewy, and to the family that let everyone love them a little. One comment offered comfort to the whole family and thanked Chewy's mom for sharing grandma with so many people, adding that they were grieving too, even from miles away.
That is the power of stories like this.
View this post on InstagramThen comes the puppy.
Tiny. New. Soft. Completely unaware that he had just walked into a family that needed a little light.
Chewy's reaction is gentle, which is exactly what you hope for. He approaches like he's trying to understand what this little creature is and why everyone seems so emotional about it. There's something deeply moving about watching such a big dog meet such a small beginning.
The puppy isn't a replacement for Grandma. That bond will always belong to her.
View this post on InstagramBut maybe this new friend can give Chewy something else to hold on to: a reason to perk up.
That's where the tears really start.
Chewy loved his grandma with his whole enormous heart.
Now, that heart has someone new to gently make room for.
View this post on Instagram How a New Friend Can Help Dogs HealWhen a dog loses someone they love, a new companion can sometimes help them feel less alone. It should never be treated as a quick fix or a replacement, but the right friend can bring comfort, routine, and gentle energy back into a grieving dog's life.
The American Kennel Club shares that dogs can show grief through changes in appetite, sleep, energy, clinginess, or overall behavior. If your dog seems deeply withdrawn or physically unwell after a loss, checking in with your vet is always a good idea.
A few things that can help:
- Introduce a new pet slowly. Even gentle dogs need time to understand a new family member.
- Keep old routines steady. Walks, meals, bedtime, and favorite resting spots can help your pup feel secure.
- Don't force a bond. Let the older dog take breaks when they need space.
Chewy's puppy won't erase the love he had for his person. But sometimes healing begins when a new little friend shows up and reminds a grieving heart that love still has somewhere to go.

Mom Buys Her Corgi a Cheap $3 Wig—and the Transformation Is Hilarious
Elvis Pressley the Corgi has main character energy. He's always had main character energy. His mom bought him a $3 wig and somehow made it even more official than having a legendary name.
Meet Elvis. He's a Corgi with short legs, a fluffy tri-colored coat, a bright white chest, caramel cheeks, and expressive dark eyes that somehow say everything without a single word. Built like an adorable little loaf of bread. Currently, sporting a bargain-bin brunette wig with complete and total confidence.
The TikTok from @elvispressleythecorgi opens with a caption that captures his whole vibe: "Turned the corner today and Elvis was looking at me like this 😂😭 his facial expressions kill me — he was giving dramatic berries and cream."
@elvispressleythecorgiTurned the corner today and Elvis was looking at me like this 😂😭 his facial expressions kill me hahaha he was giving dramatic berries and cream #corgi #corgisoftiktok #dogsoftiktok #wig #dramatic
♬ Opera - Puccini - Hollywood Strings OrchestraBerries and cream is a reference to a very specific viral TikTok moment involving theatrical overperformance. Elvis was delivering it fully and without prompting.
The text says it all: "Got my dog a $3 wig and now I can't stop making dramatic video edits." Makes total sense. Who wouldn't?
His human went further than the wig.
Built like a loaf of bread, strutting like a supermodel. That's corgi confidence. With one dramatic sigh and a bargain-bin wig, he's delivering an Oscar-worthy performance for absolutely no reason — and we're here for it. Viva Elvis Pressley.
The comments arrived with opinions:
"This is cinematic perfection, and I'm literally a wig stylist for Universal, so I'm uniquely qualified here"
A Hollywood professional who works at Universal Studios looked at a $3 Corgi wig and called it cinematic perfection. The credentials are impeccable, and their conclusion is final. The $3 investment has been validated at the highest possible level. Final answer: definitely worth the money.
"Lord Furquad is so cute!"
"It's the mother from Sopranos!!!"
"The wig getting more disheveled day by day is sending me 😭😭"
"Excellent use of free will"
The $3 wig didn't give Elvis his drama. The drama was always there. The wig just gave it an outlet.
Elvis Presley the Corgi Is a Total StarElvis isn't performing. He's just being a Corgi.
According to PetMD, Pembroke Welsh Corgis are friendly and energetic dogs with a big dog personality packed into a medium-sized body. They're eager to please everyone around them, and they love learning new things. PetMD describes them as loyal, spunky and independent — three words that describe Elvis's entire relationship with his $3 wig perfectly.
The dramatic energy goes way back. PetMD explains that Corgis were originally bred in Wales to herd cattle and sheep on farms. That history means they're wired to be alert, expressive, and in charge of whatever situation they find themselves in-even if that situation involves a brunette wig and a comment section.
Confidence is a breed thing too. Despite having short legs, Corgis are actually athletic and powerful dogs who stay agile. They don't know they're small. They've never been told. Elvis simply isn't aware that another energy is available to him.
One famous fan understood this completely. Queen Elizabeth II surrounded herself with Pembroke Welsh Corgis from childhood and got her first one in 1933. The breed's been associated with royalty for nearly a century. Elvis is just continuing a very distinguished tradition.
PetMD also notes that Corgis are eager to please and make wonderful companions who can thrive pretty much anywhere. Their expressive faces and dramatic personalities aren't accidents. They're features.
Elvis has a $3 wig and a stamp of approval from Universal Studios. Elvis is ready for his dramatic close-up.

Tiny Chihuahua Puppy Uses Sock for a Sleeping Bag and It's Too Cute
Part of a puppy's charm is their adorably small size. These precious pooches are like little balls of fluff with big round bellies and paws too big for their bodies, just adding to their charm. Some breeds are more petite than others and can be considered pocket-sized.
Goob is a teeny Chihuahua puppy who decided to take a snooze somewhere other dogs wouldn't be able to manage.
@goobchi ♬ awww so cute - Cherri ⁉️In the TikTok from @goobchi, the pretty puppy had a hard time staying awake while he was nestled in a makeshift cocoon.
"Tiny chihuahua can't keep his little eyes open in his sock sleeping bag," the on-screen text read as Goob caught some shut-eye.
The closing scene featured Goob snuggled comfortably in his sock, perfectly placed on the couch as the darling dog dozed.
Followers gushed over Goob and his adorable swaddle-like bed:
- "Ahhhh, he is so precious," one raved.
- "My puppy was like this and fell asleep in my Ugg boot face first," another shared.
- "He is just two apples big," a follower pointed out.
- "Can I have him?" someone asked.
While there is only one true Chihuahua breed, there are a few subtypes when it comes to their physical attributes. Chihuahuas are either short-haired (smooth coat) or medium-haired (long coat) and come in a range of colors.
The Chi's head shape is a vital distinction among others in their breed. The "apple-headed" Chihuahua is the smallest of the breed, standing at just 5 to 8 inches tall and weighing up to 6 pounds. The "apple" moniker is due to the small domed skull that is projected slightly outward, making for the fruit-like appearance.

Deer-headed Chihuahuas have a dome-shaped head that resembles a deer and boast a longer snout. These Chihuahuas don't have bulging eyes like apple heads. Their legs and neck are longer, giving them a height of approximately 10 inches.
Chihuahuas may be small, but they pack a lot of personality in those tiny bodies. And, like Goob, they are too cute to resist.

7 Calmest Dog Breeds, According to Experts
It's no secret that life can get hectic, making it fair to want a laidback dog with a naturally calm demeanor if you're looking for a furry companion. These gentle pups can go with the flow and take things in stride, making them the perfect pet to have when you prefer things be a little more chill at home. To help you narrow down your choices, we gathered 7 of the calmest dog breeds that have a naturally peaceful presence, according to experts.
After all, certain dog breeds are more prone to have an easygoing nature than others. “A dog’s temperament is basically its personality or its disposition,” says Hilary Humm-Beatty, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance. “Of course there are many factors that influence a dog’s temperament, but when we are talking about pure bred dogs, genetics are the major factor that influences a dog’s temperament.”
The good news is, these types of pups consist of mellow lap dogs and big gentle giants. “Some breeds may be more likely to be quiet, reserved, or relaxed in the home and people may experience those characteristics as calming,” says Jo Myers, DVM, a veterinary advisor at Vetster. However, it's important not to confuse a “calm dog” as an “inactive dog” or as being an “easy" pet to care for. That's why it’s good to learn about an individual pet beyond their breed to figure out if they’re a good fit for you or not.
So, what are the calmest dog breeds? See which lovable canines experts recommend, below.

Along with their sweet snub-nosed faces, these gentle dog breeds love spending time with their humans before settling in for a solid nap. Part of the reason they are such low-energy dogs is because they are brachycephalic, which means they have flat faces and smaller airways.
