Do Dogs Grieve?

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), “Evidence seems to indicate that, yes, dogs experience grief in some form. In fact, it’s likely that they feel all of the emotions that go along with grief when they lose both human and canine companions during their lives.”

The AKC says grieving dogs may:

• lose their appetite
• sleep more than usual
• become withdrawn from people or other pets
• vocalize in unusual ways
• search the house and other familiar places for the companion they've lost.

Sadly, these are all behaviors that George's family has witnessed over the past four months.

While there's no way to take away a dog's grief overnight, the AKC recommends giving them time to adjust while making sure they're still eating, exercising, and sticking to a familiar routine. They also offer one simple piece of advice: "Most importantly, just be there for your dog to give the love and attention he needs to recover from the loss of a close friend. That will help your own grief too.”

As a dog mom or dad, you always want to do what's best for your furry family member. However, sometimes certain situations can make you question if you're doing the right thing or not. That is especially true right now for many pet parents when it comes to the rules of what's okay and not when dealing with poor air quality issues. After all, currently the wildfires in Canada have affected more than 20 states from the Midwest to the East Coast, causing them to be under smoke advisories. So, can dogs go outside when air quality is bad? We asked experts to separate fact from fiction and explain the key factors every pet parent should consider before heading out the door.

After all, unlike people, dogs can't speak up and let you know when smoke or polluted air is making them uncomfortable, and sadly sometimes the signs of irritation aren't always obvious right away. Because of this, your devoted companion is trusting you to keep them safe and make the right call for their health and overall wellbeing.

So if the air outside outside your home is hazy or smells like smoke, you might think twice before heading out on your routine walk so you don't put your dog in danger, especially if you have puppies, a senior dogs and breeds with breathing issues.

Here's what veterinarians want pet owners to know about pet safety and walking dogs in smoky air, as well as the warning signs to watch for and how to keep your pup active in the meantime until the Air Quality Index (AQI) is back to normal.

Can Dogs Go Outside When Air Quality Is Bad? Wildfire smoke and poor air quality can affect dogs just as they affect people.

Air quality concerns aren't just a human health issue. Dogs can also be affected by wildfire smoke, pollution and other airborne particles as well. That may leave you wondering things like, "Should I walk my dog during a smoke advisory?" and "How do I protect my dog from wildfire smoke?"

“On days when air quality is poor, dogs should have their outdoor exposure limited, especially if smoke, wildfire particulates or elevated pollution levels are present,” says Dr. Susanne Heartsill, U.S. director of companion animal veterinary services at Ceva Animal Health.

"When dogs exercise, they breathe in more air, which means they can inhale more harmful smoke particles," says Dr. Tony Coronado, vice president of emergency medicine at Thrive Pet Healthcare.

For most healthy furry companions, quick bathroom breaks are fine, but long walks, runs and vigorous outdoor play should wait until air quality improves.

"I'm particularly concerned about brachycephalic breeds, such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers and Pugs," Heartsill explains. "These dogs already have anatomically compromised airways, and poor air quality can further increase the effort required to breathe."

What may be a mild irritation for a healthy Labrador can become a much more serious respiratory challenge for a French Bulldog, she points out.

How to Safely Walk Your Dog When Air Quality is Unhealthy

If your dog needs to go outside, vets say the key is to keep walks as short as possible when it comes to unhealthy air quality and dogs.

"Avoid vigorous exercise, choose times when AQI is lowest and stay away from heavy traffic corridors and visible smoke," Heartsill suggests. "Bring water and watch closely for signs of respiratory strain."

For flat-faced breeds, she recommends skipping walks altogether and taking dogs out only for quick bathroom breaks before returning indoors.

"In my opinion, owners frequently underestimate how quickly these breeds can become overwhelmed when smoke, heat, humidity and exercise are combined," she says.

If your dog begins coughing, panting excessively or appears uncomfortable, head inside immediately.

How Does Poor Air Quality Affect Dogs?

If you're curious if wildfire smoke can make dogs sick, you're not the only one. Poor air quality can irritate your dog's eyes, nose and lungs while making it more difficult to breathe.

“Smoke has tiny particles and other pollutants that can get into their lungs and airways,” says Conronado. “In serious cases, smoke can cause major breathing problems that need a vet’s help right away.”

Heartsill says smoke particles can travel deep into the lungs and worsen existing respiratory or heart disease. In fact, dogs with chronic bronchitis, collapsing trachea, laryngeal disease, heart disease or asthma-like conditions are especially vulnerable and can experience respiratory distress much sooner than healthy dogs.

What Air Quality Index Is Unsafe for Dogs? Knowing when poor air quality is unsafe for dogs can help keep your pet healthy.

What Air Quality Index is dangerous for dogs? While there isn't a veterinary-specific AQI, veterinarians generally follow the same guidelines used for people.

"For most healthy dogs, I recommend beginning to modify outdoor activities when the Air Quality Index exceeds 100, which is the range considered 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups,'" Heartsill says.

However, some pets need to be more cautious than others. So, which dogs are most at risk from wildfire smoke? Vets warn that puppies, senior dogs, flat-faced breeds and dogs with heart or lung disease can be more at risk. For that reason, pet parent should start taking precautions even earlier when the AQI reaches the Moderate range of 51-100.

"These dogs may be less tolerant of smoke and airborne pollutants and may benefit from shorter walks and reduced outdoor exertion," she says. "When the AQI reaches 150 or higher, I recommend limiting most dogs to brief outdoor trips for bathroom breaks and avoiding strenuous exercise."

4 Signs Your Dog Is Struggling With Bad Air Quality

Bad air quality doesn't affect every dog the same way, but it's important to recognize the warning signs early. That's why you need to pay attention to your dog's behaviors and your dog's body language.

"Dogs with asthma, breathing problems, heart disease or other health issues are at higher risk and may feel the effects sooner than healthy dogs," Coronado says.

However, to make sure your pet stays safe when you're dealing with poor air quality, keep a watch out for certain signs your pup may be sending you that they need help.

Breathing Problems

Watch for:

• Coughing
• Wheezing
• Difficulty or labored breathing
• Faster-than-normal breathing
• Gagging or repeated throat clearing

Eye and Nose Irritation

Smoke and pollutants can also irritate sensitive tissues, leading to:

• Red or watery eyes
• Squinting
• Nasal discharge

Changes in Behavior or Energy

Poor air quality can also cause:

• Excessive fatigue
• Weakness
• Reduced appetite
• Disorientation or uncoordinated movements

Emergency Warning Signs

"For brachycephalic dogs, worsening snoring sounds, more pronounced airway noise or difficulty recovering after light exercise can be early warning signs," Heartsill says.

If your dog develops blue-tinged gums, collapses or shows significant respiratory distress, seek veterinary care immediately.

Ways to Keep Your Dog Active Indoors on Poor Air Days

The good news is that your dog can still burn energy without stepping outside, as there are many ways you can help your furry companion burn off energy inside your home even if they can't go outside to play o poor air days.

"Many owners are surprised that 15-20 minutes of focused mental enrichment can be as tiring as a much longer walk," Heartsill says. "During poor air quality events, keeping dogs indoors with filtered air while providing enrichment is often the safest option."

If the air looks or smells smoky to you, chances are your dog is breathing those same particles.

"The safest thing is to keep them inside as much as you can, limit outdoor time and call your vet if you see coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing or other signs of breathing problems," Coronado says.

Vets recommend these inside activities for your pups to keep them occupied:

• Food puzzles
• Stuffed Kong toys
• Nose work and scent games
• Hide-and-seek
• Indoor fetch
• Obedience training
• Trick training
• Tug games
• Indoor obstacle courses

Chow Chows are known for many things, but their big personalities are at the top of the list.

While Chows look like teddy bears — or pillows — they're actually not known for being the friendliest or most social butterflies. Dogs don't exactly approach parenthood the same way that humans do, but that doesn't mean that there aren't going to be plenty of sweet moments to witness between the adult dogs and their new litter when the puppies finally arrive.

As one of Rip's humans cradles the newborn puppy in their hands (because even though this dog will be huge in the future, for now, they really do just fit right in the palm of someone's hand) he peeks over, appearing to be in total awe.

The puppy's so small that their eyes aren't even open yet, but Rip is fascinated. He should be a very proud dad — he helped create one cute baby!

Do Male Dogs Recognize Their Own Puppies?

While it certainly seems like this new dad is all about his babies, that's not typically the way it goes after a mama dog gives birth.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), male dogs aren't born with the same instincts to care for their young that female dogs are. Though living in the wild, they would have cared for their pups as members of their pack, male adult dogs aren't essential to the puppies' survival in a domestic setting, so that caring instinct has gone away.

If the dad dog is living in the same space as the puppies, he may end up forming a relationship with them, but that's more about proximity — he probably won't realize that they're actually his blood.

The AKC recommends keeping male dogs in the house away from the new mom and her litter until the puppies are about five to six weeks. Once they're weaned, Dad can be part of the fun — with a supervised, gradual introduction, of course.

But who knows? Maybe Rip will be a totally different dad. He's off to a very sweet start.

To find out more about recognizing and treating heatstroke in pets, we spoke with Dr. Karen "Doc" Halligan, DVM, a practicing veterinarian with more than 35 years of experience, about the early warning signs of heatstroke, critical symptoms to look for and the first aid steps to take. Read on below to learn about heatstroke in pets and how you can help your own furry friend if this emergency situation arises.

How to Tell the Difference Between 'Hot' and 'Heatstroke'

"A dog that's simply hot is still able to cool itself through panting, and will recover quickly once it's moved to a cool environment and offered water," Dr. Halligan says. "Heatstroke is a true medical emergency. The body's cooling mechanisms begin to fail, body temperature rises to dangerous levels—typically above 104°F (40°C)—and multiple organs can quickly become damaged. Without immediate treatment, heatstroke can become fatal."

The 'Yellow Zone': Early Warning Signs to Catch

When it comes to heatstroke, time is of the essence. "The earlier you recognize heatstroke, the better the chance of saving your pet," Dr. Halligan says.

Early warning signs of heatstroke in pets include:

• Excessive, frantic panting
• Bright red or very dark gums
• Thick, sticky saliva
• Weakness or unusual fatigue
• Restlessness or anxiety
• Rapid heart rate
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Reluctance to continue walking or exercising

"If your pet is showing these signs on a hot day, don't wait to see if they'll improve on their own," Dr. Halligan says. "By the time your dog collapses from heatstroke, you've missed the earliest opportunity to intervene. The goal is to recognize the subtle warning signs and act before it becomes a life-threatening emergency."

The 'Red Zone': Critical Symptoms of Advanced Heatstroke

"As heatstroke progresses, it becomes life-threatening," Dr. Halligan warns. "At this stage, every minute matters. Immediate veterinary care is essential."

Signs of critical heatstroke include:

• Collapse
• Inability to stand
• Confusion or disorientation
• Staggering or loss of coordination
• Seizures
• Loss of consciousness
• Pale, blue or gray gums
• Bloody diarrhea or vomiting

Emergency Protocol: Step-by-Step First Aid

If your pet is experiencing heatstroke, Dr. Halligan recommends taking the following steps:

1. Move your pet out of the heat immediately.
2. Call your veterinarian or emergency animal hospital to let them know you're coming.
3. Begin cooling with cool (not ice-cold) water, concentrating on the belly, groin, paw pads and under the neck.
4. Place your pet in front of a fan if available to enhance evaporative cooling.
5. Offer small amounts of cool drinking water only if your pet is alert and able to swallow normally.
6. Transport your pet to a veterinary hospital immediately while continuing gentle cooling.
7. Stop active cooling once your pet's temperature reaches approximately 103°F (if you're monitoring it) to avoid overcooling.

It's important to note that even if your pet seems to recover prior to reaching the emergency hospital, they should still be evaluated. "Even pets that appear to recover should always be examined by a veterinarian," Dr. Halligan says.

What to Never Do to an Overheating Pet

While it's important to know exactly how to help a pet that's experiencing heatstroke or overheating, it's just as important to understand what not to do. According to Dr. Halligan, several common mistakes pet parents should avoid if they see their fur baby overheating include:

• Using ice water or an ice bath. "Extreme cold can cause blood vessels to constrict, slowing heat loss and potentially worsening overheating," Dr. Halligan warns.
• Forcing water into your pet's mouth if they're weak or unable to swallow; they could aspirate.
• Never delay veterinary care, even if your pet has seemingly improved. "Internal damage may already be occurring," Dr. Halligan says.
• Leaving an overheated pet unattended.

High-Risk Breeds That Overheat Faster

Some dog breeds are more prone to overheating than others. These breeds include the following:

• Bulldogs
• French bulldogs
• Pugs
• Boston terriers
• Boxers
• Shih tzus
• Pekingese

Other risk factors for a pet to be more prone to overheating include:

• Obesity
• Being a senior animal
• Being a young puppy
• Heart or respiratory disease
• Thick-coated breeds, such as huskies, Malamutes, Newfoundlands and Chow Chows
• Intense exercise

"The bottom line is if your pet is panting excessively, slowing down or acting differently in the heat, take it seriously. Heatstroke can develop in minutes, but with early recognition and rapid veterinary care, many pets can make a full recovery," Dr. Halligan says. "As I always tell pet parents, I'd much rather help you prevent an emergency than treat one. If you have any doubt that your pet is overheating, don't wait—seek veterinary care immediately."

How Big Do Teacup Maltipoos Actually Get?

Maltipoos are small, yet come in a few different sizes — teacup, toy, and mini. Male Maltipoos tend to be a bit larger than females.

The puppy who's playing on the inside of the tunnel appears to have serious beef with the puppy on the outside of the tunnel.

If I had to guess from just this video, I'd say the puppy on the outside has the bigger attitude — they do not hesitate to stick their paws in those holes to pop their sibling in the head. The puppy on the inside isn't a victim, though. They're giving it right back!

Fortunately, the fight doesn't turn too vicious; there's only a little light biting involved. Those growls, though. They might be as scary as they can possibly be when coming from such tiny and adorable babies!

The good news: All those tails wagging means that their fight must be a lot of fun.

The Sibling Rivalry Is Real With These Bickering Bernese Puppies

These puppies have been very busy playing together, and fortunately, they have a really cool play yard to keep them entertained as they wait for it to be time for them to each find their forever homes.

Important Things To Know If Your Parrot Laid an Egg

Maisy and Keo are parents who are doing a great job with their eggs and raising little birds, and a lot of help from their human parents, too. We've been following along with the series, but experts say there are some important things you should know if your Parrot lays an egg. 

According to Bird Tricks, once you've established that the egg is fertilized and will eventually produce a chick, like Maisy and Keo's, it's important to give Mama her space. Like all mamas, she will be protective of her little baby, so you should observe and read her body language before approaching. 

Lafeber explains that if a breeding pair is going to care for their eggs, they'll need a quiet, safe space, and a bird box is typically what's used. As we see with Maisy and Keo, having a nest box provides them with a quiet, stable environment to nurture their eggs until they hatch.

Nestbox has a lot of information on which wood to use for a bird nest box and which materials you can add to help your birds be comfortable. Things like sawdust and wood shavings are good options, as we can see in the box Maisy and Keo have.

Congrats to the new bird parents and their humans!

If you have kids, you know the struggle of trying to get them to leave somewhere they're having way too much fun. Whether it's the playground, the swimming pool, a friend's house, or especially Grandma's, convincing them it's time to go is almost always a challenge.

As it turns out, it's not just human parents who deal with this. A woman in La Jolla, California, known as Mermaid Morgan, captured a sea lion mom repeatedly trying to coax her stubborn pup out of a rocky tide pool, but the little one is far more interested in playing than listening. You can feel Mom's growing frustration as she tries again and again to get her baby to get out of the "pool". The relatable moment has parents everywhere laughing and saying, "Yep...that's my kid."

We laughed when Mermaid Morgan joked, "POV: Your mom comes to collect you from the tide pool after you've ignored her 17 times."

She added in the caption, "I said GET OUT! - this stressed-out sea lion mama." You can almost hear Mom yelling, "I'm not going to tell you again!"

Are Sea Lions Good Moms?

According to the PADI Blog, "Sea lion moms are intelligent, resourceful, and playful marine mammals that pass these traits down to their babies." During the first few days of a pup's life, mothers stay especially close, nuzzling their babies and even gently picking them up by the scruff of the neck.

The Marine Mammal Center explains that mothers and pups recognize one another by their unique scents and vocalizations, even in crowded rookeries filled with hundreds of other sea lions. Pups remain dependent on their mothers and stay with them for their first year as they learn the skills they'll need to survive.

If you're ever lucky enough to spot a sea lion pup in the wild, stay far away. As tempting as it may be to get closer, sea lion moms are fiercely protective and can become aggressive if they think their baby is in danger. Metropolitan Touring also notes, "if a human should happen to touch it (because let’s admit it, they are unbearably cute), the mother will smell it and abandon the pup right away." If this happens, it can reduce a pup's chances of survival.

Every puppy deserves a safe home and a loving family, but even when that happens for them, it must be a little stressful. They're still brand new to the world, and now they're going to live with strangers in a brand new place? Even if their new home is way better than where they've been living so far, it can be a huge adjustment.

It's possible that no dog has embodied all the feelings that happen on that first night better than the Golden Retriever puppy in the video below. Teddy's sleeping in his new forever home for the first time, and he has some serious feelings about it.

At first, he's looking very sad, like he's pouting big time with that chin on the floor.

"You're sad, aren't you?" his new mom can be heard saying in the background. "You miss your mama and your brothers and sisters and uncles and aunties, don't you?"

That's probably true, but as soon as Teddy hears her voice, he immediately perks up and looks happier. I think it's safe to say he's excited to be home, but just a little bummed at what he had to leave behind. That's totally normal, Teddy. It will get easier!

Your Puppy's First Night Home

Feeling a big mixture of emotions is probably more common for puppies when they first meet their forever families than some might think. It's such an exciting time for them (and us!) but it's also a little scary. Don't forget — they're just a baby!

According to Chewy, here's how you can help your puppy feel a bit more comfortable on that first night:

• Make a comfy sleeping spot for them. A cozy crate will do the trick, along with a bed and toys.
• Clear your schedule. They will want your full attention (and you will probably want to give it to them, because they will be that cute).
• Play with them for an hour before bedtime to help them get all that extra puppy energy out
• Offer positive reinforcement like treats and praise right away to reward them when they do the right thing
• Offer plenty of bathroom breaks — probably more than you think they need!

For some puppies, that first night is really tough, but it does get better. Once they're settled in, things can only get better for you and for them.

There's a sizzling sound. Something's definitely cooking on the patio. But it's not dinner. It's a dog.

Meet Misty. She's an American Bully built like a tank but running entirely on nap power. Broad chest, muscular frame, blocky head — the whole Bully package. Right now, she's just melted into the concrete like it's a memory-foam mattress, soaking up the sun without a care in the world. Then, Mom comes over and flips her onto her back so her belly gets some sun too. It's so hot, she doesn't even flinch. You can tell this isn't her first rotation.

The sizzling sound plays over the whole thing, and somehow it just works. This isn't a dog getting flipped over. This is quality control, and Mom's taking her job very seriously.

Funny, but also a very serious reminder — you can't just set a sunbathing dog and forget about it.

A dog lying belly-up in the sun for a while isn't just cute to see. There's actual skin and heat stuff worth knowing about.

Is It Safe for Dogs to Sunbathe?

Turns out a little sunbathing is actually quite good for dogs. According to Hampton Park Veterinary Hospital, sunlight helps their bodies produce vitamin D, which is good for their bones, and it can even lift their mood by stimulating serotonin production. Older dogs especially get something out of it too — the warmth eases stiff joints and sore muscles. It’s basically a spa day, dog edition.

But there's a limit, obviously. Hampton Park says early morning or late afternoon is the safer window, before or after the sun's at its strongest. It’s best to skip the midday heat completely if possible. Dogs can't cool themselves down the way we do. No sweating, just panting, so too much sun can turn into overheating fast and, worst case, heatstroke.

Light-colored or thin-coated dogs have a higher chance of getting sunburned, especially on the nose, ears, and belly — which, funny enough, is exactly what's getting all the attention here. And yes, pet-safe sunscreen is a real thing. Hampton Park says it's worth using it on those exposed spots if your dog's outside in the sunshine a lot.

Watch for the signs it's time to bring them back into the shade: heavy panting, restlessness, or just wandering off to find somewhere cooler on their own. Water should always be nearby, and so should shade.

Misty's clearly done this a hundred times. Both sides, evenly done, mom running quality control like a pro.

Butter's still up for negotiation, though.

I'll admit it. I have a serious soft spot for orange Maine Coons.

Maybe it's because my own giant orange boy, Meatball, completely stole my heart. My sister surprised me with him for my birthday, and I actually cried. I'd always shared my home with rescue cats before then, so bringing home a Maine Coon felt incredibly special. He's every bit as goofy, affectionate, and larger than life as I'd hoped he'd be.

The adorable video was shared by @saltycoonskittens.

The fluffy little tangerine kitten follows her beautiful orange mom, and the resemblance is almost unbelievable. From their sweet faces to their luxurious coats and matching expressions, they look less like mother and daughter and more like someone copied and pasted the same cat.

While orange isn't unique to Maine Coons, the combination of that rich ginger coat and the breed's famously fluffy ruff creates a look that's hard to forget. Add in their gentle personalities, tufted ears, and enormous paws, and it's easy to see why so many cat lovers dream of sharing their home with one.

Maine Coons are also known for being affectionate companions who often enjoy following their people from room to room, joining family activities, and greeting visitors at the door more like dogs than cats.

Meatball certainly lives up to the stereotype.

He follows me everywhere, supervises every gardening project, insists on being involved in whatever I'm doing, and somehow always knows the exact moment I'm opening a bag of treats.

Watching this tiny kitten beside her mom, I couldn't help but picture Meatball when he was that small.

It's amazing how quickly these little fluffballs grow into gentle giants.

But no matter how big they get, they'll always be somebody's baby.

Shelter dogs spend a lot of time alone in their kennels, with little space to run around or get exercise. They have to come up with ways to entertain themselves, which is a challenge. Yet some canines can be quite creative.

In the TikTok from @cassondrachristman, Alabama was captured on camera playing on his dog bed with a random toy. Though he was by himself, he was like a one-pooch party.

"I was walking by and saw him being SO silly!" the caption revealed. "It was adorable and yes, he knew I was there watching and didn’t even care — I swear he was putting a show on!"

The fun-loving fur baby created his own little game and enjoyed every minute. Despite being found lost on the street with his sister, Alabama still had a positive and playful spirit.

"Alabama was having the time of his life throwing his Nubz bone," the on-screen text shared. "He thought this was the most fun thing. He kept flinging it in the air."

Alabama Needs a Forever Family

The canine cutie's sister was already adopted, yet no one has filled out an application for Alabama. The 1-year-old pretty Pittie is described as "friendly with people, puppyish but also knows 'sit' and 'paw,' and takes treats gently. He loves his toys, too."

Alabama is "dog-social" and obviously knows how to have fun. He is one of many dogs at the Maui Humane Society longing for a forever home.

While most cats are not the biggest fans of water, every now and then you find one who is a regular little mermaid!

Such is the case with a tiny Orange Kitten being fostered by Jamie Clark, known as @jamieclarkart on TikTok. The kitten, known as Gideon, is a regular water baby and has a ball in his personal hot tub. The hot tub being a piece of tupperware his teeny body fits perfectly in!

In the viral video, which has been viewed more than 1.1 million times, Gideon is seen splishing and splashing around, showing off his round kitten tummy, and having a ball.

Giving a kitten a bath can be stressful—both for you and for them! It's usually best to only give a kitten a bath when absolutely necessary, like if they've soiled themselves or if they've gotten into something that they can't manage to bathe themselves.

Kittens less than two months old struggle to maintain their body temperatures, so if you must bathe them, it's important to do so efficiently and to get them dry and warm as soon as possible afterwards.

Some Other Things to Keep in Mind about Bath Time:

• Trim the kitten's nails prior to bath time to avoid getting scratched
• Use warm water, not cold
• Kitten-safe shampoo is a must
• The water should be shallow; they shouldn't be able to fully submerge themselves
• Make sure to rinse them thoroughly so there isn't soap left on their sensitive skin
• Keep them away from drafts after drying to help them stay warm

While your kitten may not be a regular water baby like in the video above, it's totally possible to give them a bath that they can tolerate. Happy bathing!
