We are well into July, and that means it's getting very hot out there, folks. As summer continues on and as the weather gets hotter and hotter, finding ways to keep cool is an absolute must. This is especially true for dog parents and their fur children, as dogs are more prone to overheating than humans.

Getting your dog groomed with a summer cut is one way many pet parents try to help their pups stay cooler, but if you have a double-coated dog like a golden retriever, there are actually some special considerations to keep in mind before taking them to the groomer. For example, you might think shaving down their fur would help them stay cooler. However, though it may seem counterintuitive, this is something you should avoid at all costs.

To find out more about why you should never shave a double-coated dog in hot weather, we spoke with Dr. Kate Elden, a veterinarian and the chief medical officer at Dutch, to get the lowdown on the reason why a double-coat is actually a cooling mechanism for pups, the dangers of shaving down a double-coated dog, summer grooming tips and more. What Exactly Is a Double Coat?

A double coat is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a coat that has two layers of hair. Dr. Elden says there's "a soft, dense undercoat that insulates, and a longer layer of 'guard hairs' on top that blocks sun, repels water and protects."

While you may think a double-coated pup will run hotter because of the double layer of fur, shaving your pup in the summertime is actually a complete and total no-no. "Shaving a double-coated dog removes the very thing that keeps them cool," Dr. Elden warns. "Dogs don't sweat through their skin the way we do, so shaving doesn't help them the way it would help us. It just strips their insulation and exposes their skin to the sun."

How Your Dog's Coat Actually Keeps Them Cool

While it may seem counterintuitive, a dog's fur actually helps keep them cool during hot weather. "A dog’s coat acts like the insulation in a house. It keeps the winter cold out, and it also keeps the summer heat out," Dr. Elden says. "The undercoat traps a layer of temperate air near the skin, acting as a buffer against the hot ambient air and physically blocking direct sunlight and sunburns."

Hidden Dangers of Shaving a Double-Coated Dog

There are more risks than just having your dog be hotter if you shave their double coat. "In addition to destroying their natural heat insulation, shaved dogs are at risk for sunburn and skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) because their skin is not adapted to direct UV exposure," Dr. Elden says.

There's also a bit of an aesthetic risk when it comes to shaving down a double coat. "Shaved double coats also don't always grow back right or even the same color. The undercoat can outpace the guard hairs and come in patchy, fuzzy or take a very long time to regrow—a condition called post-clipping alopecia," Dr. Elden says.

Summer Grooming Tips for Double-Coated Dogs

When it comes to summer grooming for double-coated dogs, simply keeping it mat-free and clean can actually do wonders. "Regular brushing and de-shedding removes the loose undercoat so air can actually circulate against the skin," Dr. Elden says.

Safe Alternatives to Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer

Instead of shaving down your double-coated dog, you can offer alternative ways to help them regulate their body temperature. This can include shade, water and avoiding the heat when possible. Changing the time you walk your dog is also imperative. "Walks at dawn and dusk are the way to go. Skip the midday heat," Dr. Elden advises.

Some other vet-approved summer safety tips for pups include:

• Never leaving a dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes
• Cooling mats and kiddie pools placed in the shade
• Knowing the warning signs of overheating (heavy panting, drooling, weakness or bright red gums means you should contact your vet immediately)
• Keeping short-faced dog breeds in the shade, as they're particularly prone to overheating

While shaving your dog's double-coat may seem like a good idea, it should be avoided at all costs. Instead, keeping your dog's fur brushed, de-shedded and mat-free is key. "A matted or packed coat can't do its job, so keeping it clean and brushed out is the best summer haircut," Dr. Elden says.

The tiny creature was first filmed skittering out from under a car, and the woman behind the camera, Kiana Hall, knew one thing immediately: whatever she was looking at was not a cat.

That's always a strong start to a local legend.

The little gray animal was smaller than a housecat, round in a way that made people do a double-take, and moving on long legs like he had somewhere very important to be. His mask-like face made Hall think raccoon, but his unusual shape made the whole scene feel less like a normal wildlife sighting and more like Seattle had quietly released a sidequest.

Then she named him Jimothy.

I think that's the moment the internet fully lost the plot.

Because "mysterious Ballard creature" is interesting, but "Jimothy" sounds like a tiny Victorian gentleman who absolutely has a story.

After Hall shared the video, people quickly became invested in this oddly shaped raccoon making his way through the neighborhood. The post even invited viewers to comment "raccoon" to get the full story, which feels appropriate because Jimothy is exactly the kind of animal who deserves supporting documents.

The video itself has all the right ingredients for internet obsession: a blurry nighttime sighting, a creature that looks familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, and a name that makes him sound like he should be applying for a library card.

Even author Julia Quinn, who wrote the Bridgerton series, got involved in the comments, saying she needed to write him into that world. OMG, yes. Give Jimothy a waistcoat, a dramatic entrance, and one scandalous season in polite society.

The best part is that this is not just a strange animal video. It is also oddly sweet. Jimothy seems to be living his raccoon life, climbing stairs, crossing grass, slipping over fences, and accidentally becoming the main character of an entire neighborhood.

People suspect he may have short spine syndrome or a similar congenital spinal condition, but he has not exactly sat down for an interview or an exam. From the video, what viewers can see is an unusual little animal who appears to be moving with surprising speed and confidence.

He is not a monster.

He is not a cryptid.

He is Jimothy.

And in a city that has seen plenty of weird, this tiny round raccoon has somehow become the creature everyone wants to protect, name-drop, and maybe cast in a Regency romance.

Dogs in shelters long for the day they finally get picked for adoption. Getting to walk out of the kennel with new parents brings joy to every canine who gets a home. Imagine the devastation a fur baby experiences if they are left behind by the family they thought was forever.

Jasper the Border Collie mix is going through this trauma and is back at Stanislaus Animal Services Agency in Modesto, California, after being abandoned just one month after adoption.

The TikTok from @heathersshelterpals told Jasper's story and how he had just left the kennel a month ago after being considered in desperate need of adoption.

"Jasper was on the urgent list last month," the caption explained. "Thankfully, someone stepped up and adopted him, and we all hoped he had finally found the happy ending he deserved. Instead, Jasper’s story took another heartbreaking turn."

Apparently, Jasper's new "family" relocated but didn't bother to bring the precious pooch.

"His owners moved away and left him tied up, abandoned, until concerned neighbors reported him Animal Control came to rescue him… again," the story continued, showing clips of how sweet and friendly the 2-year-old canine is with everyone he meets.

Jasper Deserves a Family That's Truly Forever

Once again, Jasper is waiting for a chance at happiness. He is very social, friendly, good at meeting new people, easy to walk on a leash, and gentle when taking treats. In other words, a wonderful dog. But wait, there's more!

"He knows 'sit,' enjoys toys, and while he can be a little shy at first, he warms up quickly," the caption noted. "He’s affectionate, allows all-over handling, and absolutely loves attention."

Like most young dogs, Jasper can get a little excited at times which can be easily calmed with some basic training. He is also wonderful with other male and female dogs and respects their boundaries.

The post pleaded for someone to open their heart to Jasper and give him the permanent home he deserves.

Now that you've met Belgian Laekenois, Hoti, it's clear Mom was joking about the Coyote-Doodle breed, but their look is truly a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. He could easily fit into a pack of coyotes on the prowl, but I think his outgoing personality would give him away!

With an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 Belgian Laekenois globally, these pups are one of the rarest breeds in the world. As one of four Belgian Shepherd types, nearly extinct during World War I, the population has improved since getting the official American Kennel Club stamp of approval. However, they're still scarce compared to the other three Belgian Shepherds—the Belgian Malinois, Tervuren, and Groenendael.

Considered a version of a "Wire-haired Malinois," dogs like Hoti were originally bred to herd and guard flocks and their property. They've been called the "jack of all trades" for having such a wide range of skills and talents.

For Cow Appreciation Day, one family decided the usual cow-print shirt wasn't enough. They loaded up their baby cow, affectionately called their "baby best friend," and headed to the Chick-fil-A drive-thru to let her meet everyone.

The baby cow sits calmly in the back seat like a tiny celebrity arriving for a personal appearance. She doesn't seem confused about why she is there. If anything, she looks like the official guest of honor, finally showing up to an event created just for her.

Hands reach out for pets. Smiles spread across faces. The ordinary drive-thru line becomes a miniature meet-and-greet, and the little cow accepts the attention like she has been preparing for this moment since birth.

The video caption explains that the family brought their "baby best friend" along for Cow Appreciation Day, and honestly, everyone else may need to step it up next year. A spotted T-shirt is cute. An actual baby cow in the back seat is commitment.

Those in the comments section were fully on board.

One viewer joked that this might be the only acceptable reason for a delay at Chick-fil-A. Most people would forgive an extra few minutes if the holdup involved a bay cow collecting compliments at the window.

Another commenter thought the family deserved free Chick-fil-A for life. I cannot speak for the restaurant, but emotionally, the argument is STRONG.

The employee's first reaction is my favorite part. You can see the whole surprise land before anyone says much. She expected a normal order and got the best little fluff instead.

And the baby cow seems thrilled with the arrangement.

She gets a car ride, new friends, and enough attention to make the drive-thru feel like a red carpet. The employees get a story they will probably tell forever.

Cow Appreciation Day is Chick-fil-A's cow-themed celebration, built around the brand's famous bovine mascots and a little herd-sized fun. Chick-fil-A says guests who dress in cow-inspired attire can receive a select free entree at participating restaurants during the event, while supplies last.

If you celebrate with an animal of your own, keep the fun comfortable for them:

• Put safety before the photo/video. Use proper transportation, keep your animal supervised, and make sure they have enough room to stand or settle comfortably.
• Watch their body language. If they seem tense, overwhelmed, or eager to leave, give them quiet space instead of extending the visit.

This baby cow may have gone through the drive-thru for a special day, but judging by those employees' reactions, she was the real special on the menu.

So many dogs in shelters wait for what seems like an endless amount of time to finally get adopted. Canines often get overlooked simply due to overcrowding in shelters, or they get passed up for a puppy's irresistible charm. These dogs start losing hope as each day passes without a home.

In the TikTok from @bristexastails, Ivana looked out from her kennel with an expression of longing on her face. Her eyes showed her sweet spirit as she stared into the camera, almost like she was saying, "please pick me".

Ivans had several standout qualities outside of her obvious heart of gold. She boasted an irresistible underbite that could make you do a double take, and her floppy ears resembled those of the Star Wars icon, Yoda.

Staff members and volunteers were stunned that Ivana was still at the shelter due to her lovable nature and gentle demeanor.

Why Summer Picnics and Barbecues Are a Minefield for Pets

Summer picnic and barbecues are essentially a minefield for pets because they're full of potentially dangerous foods that may cause some pretty serious health consequences if consumed.

"Summer barbecues bring together nearly every hazard that sends dogs to the emergency hospital," Dr. Joslin says. "There is unfamiliar food within reach, distracted guests who love to sneak treats, dropped scraps on the ground, hot grills, skewers, alcohol and excited dogs weaving through the commotion. Even well-behaved dogs can find themselves in trouble."

In addition to this, the foods we often love eating at cookouts are either toxic to dogs or have the potential to cause serious intestinal blockages. "Every summer, veterinarians see an increase in emergency visits for food-related illnesses that could have been prevented," Dr. Joslin says.

5 Summertime Foods That Are Secretly Toxic to Your Pets

Keep an eye on your pet around these foods.

1. Cooked bones

First up, cooked bones are one of the most dangerous items a dog could potentially consume at a barbecue.

"Unlike raw bones, cooked bones become brittle and splinter into sharp fragments that can puncture the mouth, esophagus, stomach or intestines," Dr. Joslin says. "They can also become lodged in the digestive tract and require emergency surgery."

2. Corn on the cob

Next up, while it might be delish to you, corn on the cob is a dangerous food for a pup to eat.

"Dogs often swallow chunks of the cob whole because it smells like food. The cob doesn't digest, and is one of the leading causes of intestinal obstruction during the summer. Many dogs require surgery to remove it," Dr. Joslin says.

3. Onions, garlic and chives

Other foods you should keep away from your dog at all costs are onions, garlic and chives.

"These ingredients are everywhere, from burgers and hot dogs to potato salad, marinades, dips and seasoning blends," Dr. Joslin warns. "They damage a dog's red blood cells and can lead to hemolytic anemia. The effects may not appear for several days, making it difficult for owners to connect the symptoms back to the barbecue."

4. Grapes and raisins

Grapes and raisins are particularly dangerous, causing serious health consequences for dogs if eaten.

"Whether they're in fruit salad, trail mix or snack trays, grapes and raisins can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs," Dr. Joslin says. "What's especially concerning is that we still don't know exactly why some dogs are affected, so there is no known safe amount."

5. Xylitol (birch sugar)

Last but not least, another common summertime food that is toxic to pets is xylitol, aka birch sugar.

"Many sugar-free gums, candies, mints, protein bars, peanut butters and some desserts contain xylitol," Dr. Joslin says. "Even tiny amounts can trigger a massive insulin release in dogs, causing life-threatening low blood sugar within minutes. Larger amounts can also lead to liver failure."

What to Do If Your Pet Snatches a Toxic Food

If you know your pet has consumed a toxic food, it's important to act quickly. "Don't wait for symptoms to appear. Many toxins begin causing damage long before a dog looks sick," Dr. Joslin warns.

If you know your pet has eaten something that is toxic, there are several steps Dr. Joslin recommends taking, including:

• Remove any remaining food so they can't eat more.
• If possible, estimate what they ate, how much and when.
• Call your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital or the ASPCA
  Animal Poison Control Center immediately. Time matters.
• Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you to.
  Vomiting can make some situations much worse, especially if sharp objects
  like bones or skewers were swallowed.

Ultimately, prevention is your best defense against your dog eating something they shouldn't at a summer barbecue or picnic. "Key reminder: prevention is far easier than treatment," Dr. Joslin says.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to practice preventive strategies to keep your doggie safe. "Keep food tables out of reach, secure trash cans, ask guests not to feed pets, and provide your dog with a safe chew or treat of their own while everyone enjoys the barbecue," Dr. Joslin recommends. "Those simple steps can help keep your summer celebration from turning into an emergency visit."

I've seen a lot of gorgeous Maine Coon kittens over the years, but every once in a while one comes along that makes me stop scrolling so fast I nearly drop my phone.

A condition called heterochromia gives some cats two different colored eyes. It happens when each eye develops a different amount of melanin, the pigment responsible for eye color.

Heterochromia is completely normal in many cats and isn't painful or harmful by itself. While it's often associated with white cats, it can appear in other coat colors and breeds as well.

It's also worth noting that not every cat with two different colored eyes has hearing problems. While congenital deafness is more common in some white cats with blue eyes, heterochromia alone doesn't automatically mean a cat can't hear normally.

Barny has the world holding a collective breath to hear just a little more of this meek, mild boy. As a stunning black Maine Coon with colossal paws and a woolly Swiffer Duster tail, you'd expect his vocalizations to be a bit deeper. The juxtaposition is wild and makes him even more lovable!

The Maine Coon with a human name has nearly 200k TikTok followers, and they're all tuning in for videos like this, and it's clear Barny's more than happy to provide, even if he is saying "no touchy!"

Science Says Dogs React to Their Human's Voice Like a Baby Would

It's really fun to see how much personality Daisy has, and the look she gives her mom while she's talking and laughing is so perfectly sassy. And she very likely understands what she's saying, too, at least according to science. 

IFL Science reported on a 2021 study published in the journal NeuroImage, which found that dogs benefit not only from interacting with their humans but also from listening to their voices. Hearing their favorite human's voice makes them feel good.

Dogs who were more deeply bonded to their parents showed an even stronger brain response, leading the research team to conclude that pups not only recognize their humans' voices when they can't see them, but also find it rewarding—even if it's not praise. 

The findings suggest that the relationship between a dog and their human is very similar to the bond that happens between a mom and their human baby, too. 

So, even though Daisy isn't too happy with her mom's voice right now, the two share a sweet bond.

The TikTok from @franflight told Pinky's story and how he was brought to NAWS after living his entire life with one family. They made the painful decision to relinquish him to the shelter when they fell on hard financial times and became homeless.

"Pinky is the oldest cat who has come through the shelter," the on-screen text explained as Pinky cuddled with a NAWS staff member. "His previous family said they had him since he was a kitten 24 years ago."

The post shared how challenging it is for seniors to get adopted and how many never leave the shelter.

"Seniors don't always make it out of the shelter," the story continued. "Lots of seniors leave their home, and never find another. Some seniors don't ever get to feel loved or wanted ever again. But that won't be Pinky's story."

Sharing Pinky's Story Led to Her Forever Family

A young couple described as "patient", "incredibly kind," and "completely selfless" traveled to NAWS to adopt Pinky after seeing her story on social media. Now the feline fur baby has a home of his own that's truly forever. The post praised followers for helping to make Pinky's happy ending a reality.
