I don’t know why we bother teaching dogs the word “no” when apparently some of them are going to learn it and then USE IT AGAINST US. Nobody mentioned that possibility in the dog training books.

The super cute and funny clip was shared by the TikTok account for @Michellsminidachshunds and every time Mom says “no,” he makes this little whining sound right back at her.

And then one of his little noises sounds SO much like he’s actually saying “no” that I had to listen again.

He’s not even yelling. He’s sitting there on the sofa calmly arguing his case like a tiny lawyer who is absolutely certain he’s going to win on appeal.

Anyone who has spent much time around Dachshunds probably isn’t surprised that this little guy has opinions.

Dogs can use all kinds of sounds to communicate with us, including barking, whining, growling and those strange little grumbles that don’t really fit into any category.

3. Make sure they’re eating a balanced diet.

In the TikTok from @carlos.shihtzu.pa, the precious puppy was sprawled out on her back and fast asleep. Her ample tummy was on full display as she seemed to be in a deep REM cycle. The fluffy fur baby’s eyes and body quivered, obviously in the middle of a dynamic dream.

Her pure, silky white fur was perfectly accented with chocolate brown patches on her face and the sides of her belly. Her rounded, cuddly shape resembled a popular food that held the same form.

Sneezing is generally not something I consider a particularly interesting activity. Someone sneezes, you say, “Bless you,” and everybody gets on with their day. Unless, apparently, you’re a tiny Chihuahua named Cowboy who has decided a sneeze should be a full theatrical production involving your entire body.

Because Cowboy doesn’t just sneeze. This little merle Chihuahua shakes his head, his body gets involved, and then he produces a noise I can only describe as part turkey, part UFO, and part cartoon sound effect. I watched it several times and still don’t entirely understand what comes out of this dog.

Dogs sneeze for plenty of ordinary reasons, including getting dust or another irritant in their noses. Some dogs also sneeze during play or excitement, which can look and sound surprisingly dramatic.

And when you’re approximately Chihuahua-sized, a forceful sneeze can seemingly involve the whole dog.

I’ve heard barking.

But I’ve never heard a Chihuahua turn into a cartoon turkey being abducted by aliens.

I have seen a LOT of cats at this point in my life, and every once in a while one pops up on my screen and makes me go wait, WHAT am I looking at? That’s exactly what happened with this gorgeous black cat because he looks a little like a Maine Coon, a little like a Sphynx and somehow also a little like a bunny rabbit.

He’s a Maine Coon-Sphynx mix that his breeder calls a “Moon Cat,” and his ears are what got me. Instead of the more triangular ears I expect on a Maine Coon, his are long with softer, rounded tips. Add those to his black coat and unusual face and he looks like somebody started making a cat and accidentally clicked the bunny ears option.

The Maine Coon and Sphynx are two cats with very different appearances, which is part of what makes a mix like this so interesting.

Maine Coons are known for their big bodies, shaggy coats and distinctive ears, while the Sphynx is famous for having very little hair and especially large ears.

Put traits from those two cats together and apparently you can end up with THIS.

It’s worth noting that “Moon Cat” isn’t the name of a recognized Maine Coon-Sphynx breed. The name has actually been used historically for the Sphynx, and in this case it’s the name the breeder uses for these unusual mixed cats.

Whatever you want to call him, though, he’s ridiculously cute.

And I think it’s the ears that are doing it for me.

He’s rolling around playing like a completely normal cat while looking like he may hop away at any moment.

Bunny?

Tiny bat?

It is true that dogs are generally naturally social, though. “Dogs thrive when they have healthy relationships with the other animals around them,” explains Annie-Mae Levy, CFBA, professional dog trainer at Woofz by nove8, a puppy and dog training app. “In most households, this means us, the owners!”

Levy explains that dogs who feel that their needs are understood and acknowledged can feel more secure and calm. As a result, dogs who trust that you’ll listen to them when they try to communicate—usually through body language—can truly let go and be with you. On the other hand, dogs in less predictable situations can be more stressed and upset.

“Dogs become especially attached to people who can understand when they are asking for space vs actively seeking engagement,” Levy adds. “This type of understanding allows your dog to properly relax in your company, with no fear that their boundaries are going to be overstepped.”

It’s beyond heartwarming when your dog feels like you completely “get” them, but you have to know what to look for. Levy shared seven top signs that your dog feels happy, heard and understood, and they’re adorable.

1. Their gaze is soft

How your dog looks at you can tell you a lot about their mood. So, if your pup is gazing at you softly, it’s a sign they are happy. Though not every pet parent knows what “soft eyes” look like. Levy explains that people usually describe soft eyes as having an “almond shape.” They’re your dog’s way of telling you they feel relaxed and comfortable. “You’re likely to see soft eyes from your dog when they are close to falling asleep or gazing at someone they trust,” Levy states.

When dogs have larger, more circular eyes, the muscles around their peepers are tenser—and they may be, too.

2. They have a loosey-goosey posture

Sometimes you can tell how your dog feels just by looking at how they are standing. In fact, secure, content dogs have more chill body language, similar to what you’d notice in a chill human. Levy explains that you’ll probably notice this body language with classic happy dog signs, like slow-wagging tails or small wiggles when they welcome you home or into a room.

“This indicates that their body is relaxed rather than tense and ready for fight or flight,” Levy explains.

3. They dispay an open-mouth grin

In some cases, you may catch your dog smiling! If you see their pearly whites as well as notice they have relaxed body language, excited tail wags and their lips pulled back from the teeth—those clues suggest your dog is in good spirits.

Though, this dog behavior isn’t something all pups do. Though certain breeds, like Samoyeds, are known for it.

“Some dogs will never show this signal, but others will do this pretty much anytime they’re greeting someone,” Levy explains.

4. They can anticipate food and walks

Your dog can’t read your planner, but they don’t need to. They know the schedule, down to the minute they’re supposed to be fed. Levy notes that dogs who can anticipate the next exciting part of their day know their routine and live consistently. Remember, dogs like predictability.

“Dogs are creatures of habit, and picking up on cues like grabbing their leash or the sound of the food bag rustling shows just how switched on they are to life with you,” Levy explains. “It’s a lovely little reminder that they’re paying attention to us just as much as we’re paying attention to them.”

5. They play bow

You may be wondering how to tell if your dog is happy. Well, if your dog suddenly drops their front legs to the ground, sticks their bum in the air and looks ready to bounce, you’re probably witnessing one of the clearest signs they are. This playful move, known as a play bow, is an invitation to an impromptu playdate and it’s an important piece of dog body language that can show your pup feels comfortable and connected to you.

“This can be a great sign that they enjoy engaging with you and find you a fun person to be around,” Levy says. “Dogs won’t play unless they feel reasonably relaxed and believe their play partner will follow some unspoken rules, such as acknowledging body language appropriately.”

6. They mirror your emotions

Ever notice that your dog seems to take on your mood? You might be onto something. While not every dog has this ability, some pups are remarkably tuned in to their owners’ emotions, making emotional mirroring a fascinating piece of dog body language and can be a sign of just how closely your dog is paying attention to you. Levy adds that this is more common in handler-sensitive breeds, like Border Collies.

“Some dogs become so in tune with us that they are experts at mirroring your emotional state back to your,” Levy says. “The ability to do this shows empathy and a great degree of care for the owner.”

7. They expose their belly

When your dog rolls over and exposes their belly, it may look like they’re simply asking for a belly rub. But this vulnerable position can be much more meaningful. It can be a sign your dog trusts you, as well as feels safe around you. However, this is exactly the kind of behavior that dog moms and dads tend to overlook if they don’t know the real meaning of it.

“This is a vulnerable position for a dog to be in, so it shows a great deal of trust in the owner,” Levy says.

The TikTok from @analia383 introduced the pretty kitty and revealed his showstopping paws that were far from average.

“My new foster is not the typical polydactyl with a thumb,” the on-screen text explained. “His paw is ~1:1000 because his paws each have their own baby paws.”

The kitten’s foster mom held up the paws to show that he not only had extra toes, but seemed to come with an entire additional paw on each foot. The excess pads and tootsies made the feline all the more adorable.

Why Are Some Kittens Born With Extra Toes?

Polydactyly is a condition where a cat is born with extra toes. Most cats have 18 toes (five on each front paw and four on each back paw), yet polydactyl cats can have six or more toes on each paw.

Cats with more than the average number of tootsies have a genetic mutation passed down through a dominant gene from one of their parents. Polydactyly is possible in any breed, though Maine Coon cats tend to have higher chances of inheriting this trait.

Polydactyl cats don’t experience any added health issues due to this condition. Pet parents need to stay on top of trimming their nails to avoid curling or ingrown nails.

I love a big ‘ol dog, but there is big dog and then there is Newfoundland big, where you walk into your living room and for half a second wonder why there is a black bear climbing onto your furniture. This enormous Newfoundland named Rocco is absolutely massive, extremely floofy and, according to his family, knows perfectly well that he is not supposed to be on the sofa.

Which makes what happens next even funnier because Rocco does not accidentally end up on the couch. Oh no. This man WORKS for it. He struggles and climbs and rearranges half the cushions with his enormous bear body because apparently taking a nap somewhere else is simply something he has ZERO interest in.

He starts hauling himself up there, and it’s not exactly graceful because, again, we are dealing with approximately one indoor bear.

The cushions start moving. The sofa is fighting for its life. Rocco keeps going.

And then he finally gets his whole gigantic self onto the couch, plops down, and takes a nap.

That’s it.

No regrets.

No attempt to fix the cushions.

He wanted the sofa, he got the sofa, and now everybody can please keep their voices down because the bear is sleeping. Shhhh.

If you really don’t want your dog on the furniture, consistency is probably going to be your best friend. Everyone in the house needs to follow the same rule, because allowing your dog up sometimes and then getting upset other times can get pretty confusing.

It also helps to give your dog somewhere else that’s actually appealing. A comfortable dog bed near the family lets them hang out with everybody without taking over the sofa. Rewarding them for choosing their own bed can help make that spot even more attractive.

And when your dog does get onto the furniture, calmly redirecting them to the place you want them is a lot more useful than turning it into a giant drama.

Although I do have one small issue with this particular situation.

Look at Rocco. I am supposed to walk into my living room, see that enormous furry creature peacefully sleeping on my couch, and tell him to move?

Anytime I’m lucky enough to see a majestic Bald Eagle flying overhead, I’m reminded of their strength, grace, and power. But in the wild, we rarely get to see the personalities behind these incredible birds.

And Aurora, a sanctuary Bald Eagle in Connecticut, certainly has enough personality to go around. In fact, she’s even turned dinnertime into something of a fashion statement with her very trendy “fish flop.”

Christine’s Critters (@christinescritters), a licensed nonprofit rehabilitator, shared a hilarious look at one of Aurora’s signature moves in a September 12 Instagram post. After being given a trout, she opted to dine in her “box” among the collection of downy feathers she uses to decorate her favorite preening spot.

But getting there is half the fun.

Rather than simply walking around the perch in front of her, Aurora hops off the back and ducks underneath it, or, as her caregivers describe it, does a little “limbo” to get where she wants to go.

And then comes the best part. With her trout firmly in her talons, Aurora carries it along like the season’s hottest accessory. Her caregivers call it her “fish flop,” and suddenly, this magnificent Bald Eagle looks less like one of America’s most powerful birds and more like a fashionista who refuses to leave home without the perfect handbag.

One viewer was ready to narrate the whole scene, writing, “Excuse me while I dine on my fish flop!” Another summed Aurora up perfectly: “She is just the cutest stinkin thing.”

Why Aurora the Bald Eagle Can’t Be Released Back Into the Wild

Aurora’s playful personality is especially wonderful to see considering everything she’s been through.

She came to Christine’s Critters after being struck by a truck 11 years ago, an accident that badly damaged her left wing and left her unable to fly. Then, in 2024, noncancerous tumors on the injured wing required a partial amputation. Those lasting injuries mean this Bald Eagle cannot be released back into the wild, but she has a permanent home with plenty of love and care. And Aurora has adapted beautifully.

In fact, she seems more than happy to remind everyone she is quite a character. In a September 13 video, she had plenty to say during a livestream with her caregivers, earning her the nickname “Sassy Star” from one amused fan.

Moments like these make Aurora a perfect ambassador bird. Through her work with Christine’s Critters, she helps people learn more about Bald Eagles while giving us a glimpse of the personality we rarely get to see when one of these magnificent birds soars overhead.

And judging by the fish flop, Aurora isn’t just thriving. She’s accessorizing.

I love how cats can somehow make themselves comfortable in positions that would put a human being in the hospital. My cats will sleep folded in half, upside down, or with one leg pointing toward the ceiling, but this giant orange Maine Coon named Leo has decided comfort means sitting spread eagle across the bed with absolutely ZERO shame.

And Leo isn’t curled up in a cute little ball like some tasteful little cat. Nope. This enormous fluffy Maine Coon is sitting there with his back legs spread wide open like he just got home from a 12-hour shift, paid the mortgage, and would now like everyone to leave him alone. Zero modesty. None. Zilch.

Part of what makes Leo’s ridiculous sitting position so funny is that Maine Coons are already big, long cats with huge paws, fluffy tails and all that fur.

I have a Maine Coon myself, and Meatball has never once looked at a piece of furniture and wondered whether he might be too large for it. If there are six inches of available space, he’ll put 20 pounds of cat there and let the rest hang off.

I have seen cats with resting grumpy face (or, RBF, if that’s more your lingo) before, but this adorable grey Persian cat named Belle looks like she has been waiting 25 minutes for the manager, and things are about to get ugly. Persian cats are known for their round faces, big eyes, and gloriously fluffy coats, and some Persians have flatter facial features that can make their expressions look especially dramatic.

Ragdoll Cat Facts

That final comment has a point, whether they meant to or not! Cinnamon Ragdoll cats like Bubba are one of the rarest coats in the breed. Born from recessive gene types, Cinnamon Ragdolls make up just 7% of Ragdoll cats by estimation, much less common than some of the other colorways like Seal or Blue.

It’s no secret that when a new puppy comes home, there are sure to be some late nights and less sleep for a little while.

In the case of puppy Lil Red Riggs, a precocious Red Fox English Lab is definitely giving his family a run for their money with his 2 AM routine.

In a viral video shared on TikTok, Lil Red Riggs can be seen having the best time in the yard in the middle of the night during a supposed potty break. Instead of taking care of business, the adorable puppy is enjoying some private nighttime of chasing fireflies and exploring.

The results are totally “awww” inducing, although it might make you want to yawn at the thought of it!

Establishing a routine for puppies is critical to help they learn how to be a part of the household and learn behaviors to carry them through the rest of their life. This is imperative for training, housebreaking, and effectively establishing good boundaries for you and your pup.

In general, a routine for a puppy revolves around the following things:

• Sleep
• Meals
• Play Time
• Training
• Potty Breaks

Depending on a puppy’s age, they will sleep more and need more frequent potty breaks. It’s usually a good idea to take them outside to let them go to the bathroom every couple of hours, after meals, and after play time. This helps it connect what they should do and avoid accidents.

For training, keeping sessions short is better for their attention span. Keeping awake windows between naps to an hour or less until they’re a few months old is also ideal for development.

Above everything else, consulting with a trainer and your vet can help you work out what is best for both your family and your puppy. And if you end up chasing some fireflies as part of your routine, the memories will probably make the late nights totally worth it.

Is it a potato? A loaf of bread? A fluffy black bear cub? Nope, it’s just the smooshiest little puppy we’ve ever seen, thanks to its Cocker Spaniel-Shar Pei parents.

In this adorable video, the creator holds the tiny fluff ball away from the camera. Her bundle of a body is precious enough, but when she turns the pup around, what’s revealed is the sweetest, funniest little face. She thinks it looks like a bear cub, but fans of this little nugget think it’s just too cute to resist.

“That’s the cutest furry potato I’ve ever seen,” gushes one viewer.

“I would never stop kissing that faaaaace,” adds another.

Do These Mixes Take After the Cocker Spaniel or Shar-Pei?

Now, I’ve come across more mixed breeds than I could ever tally up, but seeing this unusual Cocker Spaniel-Shar Pei puppy is a treat for me. Often called a Cocker-Pei or Mini Hippo, these dogs are a coveted designer breed. But if you’re wondering, like me, which parent these pups will likely take after, the answer is: both, though it might not be totally evident from this puppy since she’s so young.

As a Cocker-Pei grows, certain distinguishing traits start to develop. Its wrinkles — the whole reason anyone says “mini hippo” — come from the Shar-Pei. The smooth body and long floppy ears are pure Cocker Spaniel. Add the Shar-Pei’s famous stubborn streak and the Cocker’s clingy, people-oriented sweetness, and you get a dog who wants to be near you constantly and will also argue with you about training.

None of it is guaranteed, though. This cross isn’t recognized by any major kennel club, so there’s no breed standard and no reliable formula—littermates can land in very different places. One Mini Hippo breeder argues that the mix keeps the Shar-Pei’s look and loyalty while smoothing out some of the breed’s harder edges — fewer and softer wrinkles that let the skin breathe, a medium-sized ear that’s easier to keep clean than either parent’s, and a lighter, more athletic dog that handles heat and long walks better.

One thing is for certain: she will not fit in your palm for long. Full-grown Cocker-Peis run 18 to 21 inches, weigh 40 to 65 pounds, and live about 10 to 15 years.
