Nature versus nurture is an age-old debate. Which one wins—the traits you inherit or the traits you learn? One dog is making a strong case on the side of nurture in a hilarious and precious viral video.

In the popular clip making rounds on TikTok, a German Shorthaired Pointer named Griffin is lying down. This sounds normal, until you watch the video and see just how this pup is resting. It’s particularly catty!

Is Griffin a cat or a dog­­—we can hardly tell! In the video, this pup is curled up with his paws crossed on top of a cat tree, and he looks to be as comfortable as can be. The caption on the video states that he has a whole L-shaped couch to lie on, but Griffin opted for the cat-sized space atop the tree. How peculiar!

People in the comments were imagining what Griffin’s thought process was here. One person said, “Nothing to look at here… Just trying it out because the cats seem to like it so much.” Another viewer commented on Griffin’s position, “The crossed paws, judgmental stare… he’s got it down.”

Other people shared photos of their own pups who believe they’re cats, and there was no shortage of large dogs lying in particularly small spaces. It seems dogs who are raised with cats develop some interesting habits!

Griffin and his peers are raising a question: Can dogs truly pick up cat-like habits? Through social learning and observation, they absolutely can if they spend a lot of time living with kitties.

There are a few different habits that are common for dogs to adopt from their cat companions. Just as Griffin shows, perching is a common behavior for dogs to pick up. Sitting or lying on high surfaces like the backs of chairs, armrests, and windowsills gives them a higher vantage point that cats find so enticing. Similarly, dogs will pick up resting habits from felines. Dogs may curl up into tight balls or tuck their paws underneath their body in a “loaf” position.

Resting and relaxing isn’t the only thing that dogs pick up from their feline friends. Cats often lick their paws and rub them on their faces, and dogs who live with cats have been known to do the same thing. Pups may even pick up playing habits from cats, such as stalking and swatting at small objects and pouncing on things that move.

How is it that dogs develop these habits? A lot of it is social learning. Dogs are highly impressionable and adaptable animals. When exposed to a kitty—especially during puppyhood—they may accidentally mimic what they see through everyday bonding.

Learning these cat habits isn’t intentional. Animal behaviorists note that cats don’t intentionally teach other species these habits, and it’s purely the result of dogs observing and copying their environment.

Picking up feline habits is unlikely to cause any issues for your pup, as most are harmless and cute. Only worry about your pup if their behavior is sudden, obsessive, or accompanied by stress. In these situations, you should consult a veterinarian.

Luckily, it doesn’t seem like Griffin’s cat-like behaviors are any cause for concern. This adorable pup can continue lying perched atop that cat tree as much as he wants, or as much as his kitty friends will let him!

Niall Harbison has become an expert on saving and rehabilitating street dogs through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. Airbus the senior dog is one of his most recent rescues, who was brought to Harbison’s sanctuary after being hit by a truck.

The precious pooch showed remarkable courage and grit throughout her recovery and recently received the best news ever.

The Instagram video from @wearehappydoggo shared Airbus’s story and described the extent of her injuries when she was rescued.

“When we first found Airbus, she was lying helpless on the ground, completely paralyzed,” the caption explained along with clips of Airbus’s rescue and physical therapy. “She couldn’t stand, she couldn’t walk and, as an older girl, we really didn’t know what her future would look like.”

Harbison had no idea if Airbus would be able to live a normal life after the traumatic incident, yet the canine cutie was determined to heal.

“We brought her in, started rehabilitation and watched as this determined little old lady slowly began to prove us all wrong,” the story continued. “Day by day she grew stronger, until eventually, Airbus learned to walk again.”

Earlier this year, Harbison launched Happy Doggo’s Golden Ticket Retirement Village for senior dogs, which provides older street dogs a permanent residence with nutritious food, medical care, cozy beds, fellow furry friends, and lots of love. The animal advocate just made Airbus the village’s newest member.

“She had already been given a second chance at life, but today we got to give her something even more special,” the caption shared. “Her very own golden ticket.”

The video showed Airbus in her new forever home surrounded by her pooch pals, already enjoying her next chapter of life.

“A golden ticket means Airbus officially has a place in our retirement village, where she can live out the rest of her days safe, loved and surrounded by friends,” the text noted. “No more wondering where she’ll go or what her future holds. This is her home now.”

Harbison launched Happy Doggo in 2021. In addition to the sterilization and daily feeding of thousands of street dogs, he recently opened a full-service medical clinic in honor of his beloved Golden Retriever, Tina, and a retirement village for senior dogs.

I don’t care how old you get, sometimes you just want your mom. Apparently that also applies when you’re a giant fluffy Maine Coon kitten who is rapidly approaching the size of a throw pillow and should probably realize by now that the milk bar has CLOSED.

The hilarious clip was shared by the TikTok account @wildmane_mainecoons.

Mama doesn’t leave much room for negotiation. She tosses her enormous child right off the cat tree. 😂

But apparently this man believes no means maybe come back in thirty seconds and ask again, because he returns. Mama is perfectly happy to let him sit beside her. She’ll cuddle him. She’ll groom him. She loves her giant baby.

Nursing? NOPE.

He keeps trying anyway, and eventually Mama gets much firmer about it. I swear every mom watching this knows exactly what’s happening. I already told you no. Why are you asking me again?

“She’s rage cleaning him,” someone else wrote.

Another person perfectly translated the interaction: “She said, ‘I love you, but I don’t like you right now.'”

And my favorite might be the person who imagined Mama saying, “Dang it, Simon, you’re a grown cat!”

As funny as Mama’s reaction looks, kittens really do have to graduate from nursing eventually.

Weaning usually starts when kittens are only a few weeks old and involves gradually moving them from their mother’s milk to solid kitten food. Most kittens are fully transitioned to solid food by around eight weeks, although the exact timing can vary.

Maine Coons also stay in their kitten era for an unusually long time physically. Larger breeds such as Maine Coons can continue growing until around two years old or even later in some cats. So while this silver floof may look enormous next to the tiny kittens we’re used to seeing, being a big Maine Coon doesn’t necessarily mean he’s finished growing.

Mama, however, appears completely finished with this.

Cuddles? Yes. Grooming? Fine. Milk? Sir, please take your enormous fluffy self somewhere else.

I thought one precious baby turtle face was already more than enough to make me melt, but apparently nature decided to double up. An exceptionally rare diamondback terrapin hatchling found on Cape Cod has two tiny heads peeking out of the same shell, and I cannot stop looking at him.

The little turtle weighs just 5.2 grams (That’s about the same weight as a nickel or a sheet of paper!) and practically disappears against the black glove holding him in the video. Then the camera moves closer, and there they are: two perfectly distinct little faces sitting side by side. I would absolutely be getting nothing done at the wildlife center because I’d spend the entire day staring at this baby.

The diamondback terrapin hatchling was discovered at a protected nesting site in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, before being brought to the Cape Wildlife Center. According to the center, its veterinary team is now watching closely to learn more about how the turtle’s two heads and bodies work together.

Thankfully, New England Wildlife Centers CEO Zak Mertz told CBS News that both sides are behaving normally and looking “very good.” For now, the team will continue monitoring the hatchling’s appetite, growth and behavior.

The hatchling’s two heads are the result of a rare developmental condition known as bicephaly that can occur in reptiles and other animals.

The condition that caused the turtle to develop two heads is known as bicephaly. Although the Cape Wildlife Center has treated turtles with the condition before, this remains an especially unusual case. The team has reportedly encountered only two other bicephalic turtles within the past five years.

Diamondback terrapins are also considered a threatened species in Massachusetts, making this tiny baby’s arrival feel even more significant. These beautiful turtles live in coastal salt marshes and brackish waters, where fresh water and salt water mix.

At only 5.2 grams, this little one is already carrying quite a lot on that miniature shell. I’m relieved to know both sides appear to be doing well, and I hope there are plenty of snacks in this baby’s future. With two adorable faces like those, he may also need twice as many people telling him what a very good turtle he is.

Puppies have many firsts: their first time outside, their first yummy treat, and their first time meeting their forever person.

Another first is the puppy’s bath.

Puppy first baths can usually be chaotic, sweet, and downright hilarious.

In the case of this Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, it was all of the above, and viewers couldn’t get enough of this puppy being the “puppiest puppy who ever puppied.”

It helps that this Bernese Mountain Dog puppy is extraordinarily cute and really seems not to mind getting a bath.

From chewing on the brush to trying to eat the wipes and being introduced to water, this little pup was busy!

And there was a whole post-bath drying session we didn’t get to see because his breeder ran out of phone storage.

As you can imagine, the comments section was full of admirers:

First baths can be a little intimidating for both the parents and certainly the puppy.

This professional breeder, who bathes puppies all the time, made it look quite easy, but it’s normal to feel a little stressed, whether your dog is tiny or a larger puppy.

It is a new experience, and that can be daunting.

So the best way to make a puppy’s first bath stress-free is to prepare.

First of all, your pup should be at least 8 weeks old before you bathe them for the first time.

Here are some tips, according to Purina:

• Make bath time a positive experience with treats, and praise your puppy consistently.
• Use lukewarm water, not hot water.
• Use puppy shampoo or Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo, as it will be gentle on their skin.
• Rinse them thoroughly but gently, and don’t wash their face.
• Use a towel to dry them off after they shake off the water. You may also want to blow-dry their hair (if you can get them to sit still).
• Give them a post-bath treat for a job well done!

Senior dogs and cats wait longer for adoption than their younger furry friends. Potential pet parents shy away from animals over a certain age due to possible health issues and limited life span, yet these older fur babies bring so much love and joy to everyone they meet.

Smooch the 19-year-old cat recently landed at the NAWS Humane Society. Staff members were uncertain of her future, but the pretty kitty got life-changing news.

Smooch appeared in several videos from the shelter’s social media account and was clearly a total cuddle bug. The affectionate cat was content just being held and would obviously make a wonderful addition for any family. Since senior cats often get passed over for kittens or younger felines, finding Smooch a home seemed like a challenge.

“She was starting her life over with nothing,” the on-screen text from @franflight’s TikTok post shared. “In such a scary and confusing time, Smooch needed someone to show up for her.”

The video cut to a sign that revealed Smooch was adopted. The post praised followers for the happy turn of events.

“Smooch was adopted because of you all who shared her story,” the text noted in gratitude.

The video featured images of Smooch in her new home snuggling in a blanket, playing with toys, and getting plenty of affection.

“She is settling into her forever home and doing amazing,” the on-screen text read. “She is beyond loved.”

The post added a reminder of how senior cats usually don’t get adopted and spend the rest of their lives in a shelter.

“There are so many senior cats who don’t get the ending that Smooch did,” the story shared. “Most seniors don’t make it out of the shelter, and that’s a reality. Most times, they wait… and wait.”

Not all stray cats do well in a noisy, crowded shelter, especially if they’ve just given birth. They’re more likely to open up and show their true personalities in the safety of a quiet home. Not only is this rescue kitty affectionate with her babies, but also with her foster mom @mywildmeadows, too. The gentle and loving purring machine is a proud mom, but as she relaxes against her foster while nursing, it’s like she’s saying, “Thank you for co-parenting with me; I need the support.”

The adorable family arrived in early September, and from the start, mama cat was beyond grateful. You can just tell that some stray cats were always meant to find their humans, even with a rough start on the street, because they’re open and trusting enough to keep the faith.

One day, when they least expect it, they’re swooped up and taken to the home of their dreams—that’s what we wish for this mama and her kittens.

The video was taken just 24 hours after arriving in her foster mom’s home. She seemed to relax right away. A previous post shows the first morning together, and it’s way too sweet:

It’s admirable to take in any shelter or stray pet, but even more so if it’s a new mom trying to take care of her babies. To support a nursing cat, offer plenty of high-calorie cat food, lots of fresh water, and a quiet, low-traffic area with soft blankets to nest and nurse. Do daily checks, ensuring her mammary glands aren’t swollen, hot, or bruised, which requires veterinary intervention.

Some kitties have trouble latching and may need supplemental feeding with a bottle and commercial kitten formula, so it’s also important to check weights regularly. Once the babies are weaned, a whole new adventure begins!

Pretzel isn’t the first Pug to make someone laugh. The dogs of this breed are total clowns and are well known for entertaining their humans with their antics. These quirky habits come down to a mix of unique body traits and thousands of years of being bred strictly as companion animals.

Pugs are short and stocky with curly tails and big eyes. Their body composition makes for some awkward poses and funny sleeping silhouettes, and their large, expressive eyes make it super easy for humans to read human-like emotions in every head tilt and side-eye.

Pugs are also brachycephalic dogs, meaning they have a flat face and compressed airways. This is what leads to the signature snorts, snuffles, and heavy sighs that Pugs so often make.

Growing up, my aunt had an Australian Shepherd named Sam. He was the sweetest dog I’ve ever met in my life, but he definitely had his quirks. He was very silly, and I remember always wondering why he was like that… Though that’s just how these pups are!

Luke the Australian Basketball… I mean, Australian Shepherd, is definitely something else. Not only does he like to be dribbled like a basketball, but he’s 9 years old: a senior dog! That just goes to show what this breed is like. Even in his older years, he’s always ready to play!

Someone called this “buttsketball,” and that’s exactly what it is. Most dogs love but scratches; there are a lot of nerve endings near the base of their tails that make it enjoyable. Luke just takes that to the next level.

It’s not just inside where he’ll go into basketball mode, though. If anyone touches his butt at any time, he’s doing it immediately. He’ll even start dribbling himself in the middle of a walk:

I’m very impressed with his commitment to the bit, even if it might be a little embarrassing for him. He needs the whole world to know how much he loves butt scratches!

Even when he’s not in basketball mode, Luke is still a little crazy. Australian Shepherds aren’t an easy dog breed, and they’re definitely not a great choice for first-time dog parents. However, if you have the time and energy for one, they’re genuinely amazing dogs.

Australian Shepherds were bred to always be on the move: they’re herders. They run fast and work hard, and they were bred to do a lot of barking. As a result, this dog breed is very high-energy. They need a lot of exercise, and a lot of them particularly enjoy:

• Runs.
• Hikes.
• Swimming.
• Intense games of fetch.
• Sniffing exercises.

Luke’s favorite exercise is a game of basketball. Only if he can be the ball, though! I’ve never seen anything like this, but I will absolutely never forget it!

I thought I was prepared for a sweet Golden Retriever-and-ducks friendship video. I was not prepared for where Rodney’s story went.

The first clips are pure joy.

Rodney runs with one of the ducks like this is the most normal friendship in the world. His family says he was best friends with their ducks, and you can see why. He’s playful, delighted, and carrying that classic Golden Retriever expression that says every creature on Earth has friend potential.

Then the video changes.

We see Rodney’s funeral.

And the ducks are there.

All of them.

His family wrote that they will never forget Rodney’s kind spirit, and those earlier clips suddenly feel heavier. This big, gentle dog had built his own little community, and the ducks were part of it.

One comment said it was far too early for something this emotionally heavy. Another offered a gentler thought: Maybe time works differently wherever our animals go, and by the time they turn around looking for us, we’re already there.

Rodney’s death makes the story even harder. In another post, his family shared that this wasn’t the goodbye they expected. Rodney was shot twice in the neck and left in a ditch across from their home.

There isn’t a neat sentence that makes something like that easier.

So I’d rather spend most of this story on who Rodney was.

He was loved.

He was gentle.

He had ducks for best friends.

There are videos of him racing around with them, making his family laugh and giving strangers a glimpse of the dog he was.

The funeral footage is heartbreaking. We can’t know exactly what the ducks understood, but they had shared space, routines, and time with Rodney. Seeing them gathered there after watching him play with them feels almost impossible not to read emotionally.

Relationships like this are why I love animal stories. Friendship doesn’t always make sense on paper. Sometimes it’s a Golden Retriever and a flock of ducks who simply decide they belong in each other’s lives.

I hope the videos eventually hurt a little less and feel more like what they really are: proof that he was here and deeply loved.

Bird grief is difficult to prove in the same way we describe human grief, but Audubon notes that birds can show prolonged behavior changes after losing close companions, and researchers have documented strong bonds between individual ducks.

If animals in your care lose a familiar companion:

• Keep routines steady. Familiar feeding, sleep, and turnout schedules can make a changed environment feel less disruptive.
• Watch for changes. Eating less, withdrawing, unusual calling, or major shifts in activity deserve attention.
• Give them time and company. Familiar flockmates and calm interactions can help while everyone adjusts.

Whatever Rodney’s ducks understood that day, they knew him.

And they were part of his life.

Both Bernese Mountain Dogs and Corgis are two of the sweetest, happiest dog breeds I’ve never seen. They’re just so sweet and happy to be wherever you are, and to make it even better, they smile all the time. They have the prettiest smiles, too!

Apparently, combining them only turns them into an even sweeter, fluffier, smilier pup than anyone could ever imagine. When one “Bernese Corgi Dog” got posted on TikTok, it didn’t take long at all for everyone to fall in love:

Sully the “Bernorgi” is one of the cutest dogs I’ve ever seen in my life. I feel like if I didn’t have three dogs who made me question my sanity every single day, I would be rushing out to find one of these. The video shows Sully when he was a puppy as well as right now!

He’s so adorable, but as he grew up, he grew into his Corgi genes. That is to say, his body grew, but his legs didn’t. He looks like a Bernese Mountain Dog on Corgi legs! Luckily for him, his tiny legs haven’t impacted him negatively at all; he’s fluffy, fast, and can get out of trouble easily because of how cute he is!

Sully might not look like a typical dog you see every day, but he definitely acts like one. As with most dogs, his favorite thing to do is eat, and he does whatever he needs to in order to make that happen. Even if it means listening to Mom sing:

If you’re looking at Sully and thinking that you have to have one, I totally understand. He’s so beautiful! He’s fun to play with, he has a great personality, and he just seems like he would be a lot of fun to be around. All Bernorgis are that way.

One of the best parts of having four-legged family members is the greeting we receive when we come home. Those wiggling butts, happy smiles, and pure joy can make just about anything that happened during the day fade away.

But one dog dad got an especially enthusiastic welcome after spending 10 days out of town with no cell service. While he was gone, his wife brought home two foster Bulldogs, Froggy and Muffin, so when he finally walked through the door, he wasn’t just coming home. He was meeting two new dogs for the very first time.

You’d never know it from their reaction.

Piggiebully (@piggiebully) shared the sweet introduction on Instagram on September 11, and it’s hard to tell who was more excited to meet whom.

The greeting looks much more like a reunion than a first meeting. Froggy and Muffin immediately showered their new foster dad with affection, and he doesn’t exactly try to hide how happy he is about the surprise.

Before they’ve even made it inside, he was already telling them, “We’re going to cuddle tonight.” And once inside, he gets right down on the floor to collect those happy kisses, which don’t seem to stop coming.

And perhaps the sweetest moment comes from him when, surrounded by his two new foster pups, he simply says, “Dreams come true.”

Viewers couldn’t get over the instant connection, either. @francopets joked, “Lmao not the pups acting like they’re greeting their daddy even tho they’ve never met him before.”

For @thethailombian, the moment hit especially close to home: “I just started fostering this year. It is some of the best love and joy a person can experience.”

And @catiereadsandwrites saw another pretty important takeaway: “Those dogs instantly loving him is the biggest green flag. Ma’am, you won the lottery.”

It’s hard to argue with any of them. Froggy and Muffin may have just met their foster dad, but judging by all those kisses and cuddles, they already adore him.

Froggy and Muffin aren’t the first dogs this family has welcomed into their home. According to the @piggiebully bio, they’ve fostered 18 dogs in honor of Piggie, their beloved Bulldog.

And while it can be hard for most of us to imagine eventually saying goodbye to two love bugs like these, that’s also what allows foster families to keep opening their homes to the next dog who needs them.

The ASPCA explains that fostering can give animals a break from the shelter environment, help them feel more comfortable in a home, and provide valuable information that can ultimately help them find the right adoptive family. For this family, that means every bittersweet goodbye creates room to help another dog in Piggie’s honor.

Froggy is already doing a little good of his own, too. In another post, @piggiebully shared that he recently served as a spokesdog for the shelter that saved him, posing for donation portraits in exchange for bags of dog and cat food for the shelter’s community pet food pantry.

From the way these two greeted their new foster dad to Froggy giving back to the shelter that saved him, these sweet Bulldogs seem to have a whole lot of love to go around. And fortunately, there seems to be plenty coming right back their way.

In the TikTok from @wilsonwalterandharold, the lion-esque Lab sat on the couch while casually looking around the room. Walter’s long, droopy jowls gave him an almost storybook character vibe, and his piercing amber eyes looked like they were borrowed from a jungle animal. His overall aura was adorably awkward, adding to his overall charm.

The striking resemblance to the Cowardly Lion was undeniable as the famous song “If I Were King of the Forest” appropriately played in the background. Beautifully portrayed by Bert Lahr, the fearful giant feline won everyone’s heart with his clumsy antics and heart of gold. Walter could easily be mistaken for a canine version of the less-than-courageous cat.

Followers picked up on the similarities immediately and posted some of Cowardly Lion’s most famous lines:

• “With a woooof! And a woooof! And a royaaal grooowl!” one recalled. 
• “Put ’em up, put ’em up,” another shared.  
• “He actually looks like the lion,” a follower remarked.
• “This song is so fitting for Walter… He’s the king of our hearts forever!” someone raved.

Most people associate black, yellow, or chocolate coat colors with Labradors. Silver Labs are more rare and first surfaced in the 1950s. Labradors Retrievers were recognized as a breed by the AKC in 1917 and were predominately black until yellow Labs started making an appearance.

There is absolutely no wingman (or woman) like a companion dog. After all, they are your forever ride-or-die buddy. They’re constant companions who are willing to do whatever, as long as it’s with you.

“Through it all, they’re the one who’s there for the adventures, the boring days, the difficult decisions and everything in between,” Bridget Murphy, the CEO of Koru K9 Dog Training. “In dog terms, it’s the dog who has decided that wherever you’re going, they’re probably coming too. It’s the dog you cannot imagine your life without.”

And that’s what makes dogs such natural sidekicks. “Dogs have this incredible way of becoming your constant companion through all of the moments that life brings: the fun stuff, the hard stuff, the boring everyday stuff you barely remember until one day you realize they were your steady rock alongside you for all of it,” Murphy says.

But a good wingman doesn’t just stick by your side, they can also help you connect with the world around you. Your dog can give you an easy reason to strike up a conversation with a stranger, make a walk around the neighborhood more social, or even help break the ice when you’re meeting someone new. Sometimes, all it takes is a friendly dog saying hello for two people to start talking.

There’s something so heartwarming about having a dog. But what are the signs your dog is your furry sidekick and wingman? Murphy shares seven clues you can look out for, below.

Ever since you brought your dog home, they’ve probably become your furry shadow. Whether you’re heading to the kitchen, moving from room to room, or simply getting up from the couch, your dog is right behind you. And that constant desire to stick by your side is one of the clearest signs they’ve become your forever wingman.

“If your dog follows you from room to room, it can be a sign that they genuinely like being near you and see you as an important part of their world,” Murphy says. “Dogs are social animals, and many naturally gravitate toward the people they feel connected to.”

In other words, your dog isn’t just following you, they’re choosing to be where you are. For a true wingman, that’s pretty much the job description. Importantly, Murphy notes that there’s a difference between “I like hanging out with you” and a dog who truly panics when you leave. If you suspect your dog has separation anxiety, talk to your veterinarian.

If your dog could email you, they’d be the one always sending messages like, “Just checking in.” Instead, they do so in the flesh by popping over to you after sniffing, watching another dog and exploring. Murphy loves this dog behavior, calling it one of the clearest signs your pup is actually paying attention to you.

“That little check-in shows that you’re still very much an important part of the picture for them, even when there are much more exciting things happening around them,” Murphy states.

When a dog looks at you after a car backfires or a stranger comes to your home, Murphy says it’s a sign of deep trust and a dog’s way of gathering information from you—they’re asking, “Was that weird? Should I care? Are we leaving?“

“It doesn’t mean they expect you to solve every scary thing, but it does mean your response matters to them,” Murphy says. “It means they trust and respect you and know that you will keep them safe if something does happen. That’s what ride-or-die wingmen are for, after all.” 

Murphy shares that your dog probably gets pumped when you grab their leash because they know something good is coming, and they’ll get to play wingman. Maybe you’ll go for a walk, have an adventure, let them sniff or visit their favorite trail.

“If your dog lights up when you grab it, chances are they’ve built a very positive association with doing things with you,” Murphy notes. “It’s basically the dog version of seeing your best friend put on their shoes and saying, ‘Ohhh, where are we going? On second thought, who cares where we are going as long as I’m with you!’“

That eagerness to join whatever you have planned is classic best friend behavior: Wherever you’re headed, they’re ready to come along.

Murphy reminds us that great companions don’t need every moment to be exciting. She says dogs that can go out, have fun with you and then come home and settle are well-balanced.

“Sometimes, the best sign of a strong relationship and bond is that your dog doesn’t need you to entertain them constantly,” Murphy says. “They’re perfectly happy just being by your side.”

Take it from Murphy, who says, “There’s nothing quite like being welcomed home by a dog who acts like you’ve returned from a six-month expedition when you were gone for 15 minutes.”

That over-the-top welcome is more than just adorable. Murphy says it’s a sign that your homecoming genuinely matters to your dog. And not every dog expresses that excitement by completely losing their mind. Some bring you a favorite toy, wag their entire bodies, or quietly stick to your leg for the next 10 minutes.

“It’s not even about the homecoming party,” Murphy explains. “It’s knowing your dog truly wants you around and wants to be with you.”

Basically, whether your dog throws you a parade or simply refuses to leave your side, they’re making one thing clear: they’re really glad their favorite person is home.

If you want to know how tight your human-dog bond is, this is a sign.

“There’s no transaction involved,” Murphy says. “If your dog regularly chooses the spot next to you, sleeps near you or wanders over just to be in the same room, that says a lot about your relationship with them. They’re not waiting for a treat or asking to go somewhere. Your company is more than enough.”

There’s no denying that Maine Coons hold a special place in the feline world. These large cats have plenty of dog-like traits, making them a good fit for nearly every pet lover out there. They also just have their own unique qualities that make them a beloved breed. But while Maine Coons are generally happy cats, it’s fair to wonder if your kitty has bonded with you. After all, since they communicate differently, it can be tricky to tell if your Maine Coon is deeply attached to you, or if they have a way to go.

“Maine Coons are often sociable, playful cats that like to be involved in family life, but every cat shows affection differently,” explains Aimee Warner, DVM, resident veterinarian at Waggel. “Some enjoy plenty of physical contact, while others prefer simply to stay nearby.”

Jo Myers, DVM, a veterinary advisor at Vetster, agrees. “Maine Coons certainly have a reputation for being sociable and communicative, although individual personalities vary considerably,” she says. 

That doesn’t mean you’ll never be able to tell how your fluffy cat feels about you, though. The good news is, experts say there are certain signs a Maine Coon may give to suggest that they think you’re amazing and may have even imprinted on you. You just have to learn how to read your cat’s body language and decode their behaviors first.

Is your furbaby emotionally attached to you? While Maine Coons tend to love people, you can tell if they are especially fond of you by whether or not they keep following you around. “If your Maine Coon follows you from room to room, it may be because they enjoy your company and feel secure around you,” Warner says. But, of course, your pet may also be hoping for food or a little play time, she points out.

What’s another clue that your big cat loves you more than you know? See if they try to rub their head against yours. If so, it’s a cat affection sign.

“Cats have scent glands around their cheeks, chin and forehead, so rubbing against you is a way of leaving their scent,” explains Nita Vasudevan, DVM, an Embrace Pet Insurance veterinarian contributor. “It’s a really positive social behavior and can be a sign that your cat feels comfortable and bonded with you. In fact, Myers also calls face rubbing one of those wonderfully recognizable cat behaviors you can look for to know if your cat feels comfortable engaging with you or not.

Some Maine Coons will book it in the other direction when they spot a human, but ones that stay put feel good in your presence, according to Warner. “A cat that stays relaxed when you enter the room is likely to feel comfortable around you,” she explains.

So, if your furry companion approaches you or sits nearby, that’s even better. “Simply remaining in the room can be a more subtle signal, especially if they were already settled,” Warner explains.

How Maine Coons show affection may be through playing, according to experts. After all, play time is important for stimulation and development, and these large cats are all about it. So, if you’re part of that fun, it shows your furbaby views you as their pal and has an unbreakable bond with you.

“Choosing to play with you is another positive sign,” Warner shares. “It shows that your cat associates you with fun and stimulation, and regular interactive play can help strengthen your bond.”

Not all cats are cuddly, but ones that are will try to express to you that they feel attrached to you more than they do with other people.

“If your Maine Coon consistently chooses to curl up next to you, sit in your lap or snuggle against you, that’s a pretty good indication that they trust you,” Vasudevan notes. “Cats are vulnerable when they’re sleeping, so choosing to relax and nap near you is a great compliment.”

Just remember that every cat is an individual, and some are more into snuggle time than others. “A cat who prefers sitting a few feet away isn’t necessarily any less bonded to you than the one who wants to sleep on your head,” Myers reveals.

Maine Coons are a vocal breed, communicating with chirps and trills. So, if yours like to “talk” to you all the time, that’s a sign yout cat is attached to you and loves your company.

“I’ve known plenty of cats who seem to develop their own little conversational routines with the people they live with,” Myers says. “The meaning of any particular sound depends on the cat and the situation, but those repeated friendly vocal exchanges can become part of the social relationship between a cat and their person.”

Overall, experts agree that these cat chats can be a sign that your Maine Coon views you as part of their social world.

Cats choose their special person based on who communicates, feels safest and calmest, and most importantly, respects their boundaries. They tend to prefer people who give them the space and independence they require to feel their happiest. That also means that it’ll likely be someone who can read body language and vocal cues, knowing when to back off instead of pushing the limit.

Early socialization between 2 and 8 weeks old helps cats become more familiar with handling and interacting, but it’s not a guarantee they’ll automatically be sassy and social like Elie. If you notice a kitty blinking slowly, head butting, or staying near you over all others, congrats—you’re the chosen one! But if you’re not wearing glasses, you’re not winning Elie’s heart, FYI!

This Newfie isn’t the only dog to ever be disappointed by the cancellation of a walk due to rain. Walks are a great way for pups to burn their energy instead of being cooped up in a house all day. High-intensity indoor games are effective at keeping your dog active when walks aren’t an option. The stairs will work them more than simply tossing the toy down the hallway.

Brain-teasing scent work can help tire out dogs in a different but highly effective way. A puzzle feeder is one way to engage your pup in mental exercises. You hide food in these toys to entice the dog to work on the puzzle and receive their treat. While this isn’t quite physical exercise, it works their noses and brains, and it can still be effective at burning some energy. Some people even make their own puzzle feeders! Other activities include hide-and-seek, where your big dog hunts you down from your hiding spot, or a scavenger hunt, where you hide their toys and treats around your home for your pup to search for.

It’s important to keep your dog active, and when it’s not raining, take them for walks around the neighborhood. Not only does it keep them physically fit, but it strengthens their mind, too.
