Tuxedo Cat 'Sploots' Just Like a Dog, and It's the Cutest Thing Online
Impersonation is the sincerest form of flattery, and this Tuxedo cat has done just that with his very own cat sploot.
In a new video, a Tuxedo cat named Blue is back in his signature cat sploot position.
He went viral for doing this same position back in May, and viewers can't stop watching this odd cat behavior, and now he's at it again!
@jentalesmanBlue is back in his “sploot” position that made him go viral. keep cheering him on. he’s 15 and i’m trying to enhance his quality of life via the thousands of people thinking about him. 🥹 #cattok #cats #sploot

One person wrote, "Get this guy on a mountain, he already knows how to ski 50%."
Another wrote, "Does he have a tail???? I have a cow-print Tuxedo without a tail, and OMG, it’s the cutest little cottontail! Like a rabbit. And he sploots too!!"
Perhaps the cat sploot is a trait of Tuxedo cats.
Someone else posed, "Is he perhaps a seal?"

Why Do Dogs Sploot? You have probably seen a dog sploot (or perhaps even a cat!), but what exactly is it, and why do dogs do it?
Splooting, which also may be referred to as "frogging", is when a dog lies flat on their stomach and has their back legs splayed out behind them.
You may see dogs with shorter legs, like Corgis, embrace this position more than longer-legged pups.
As for why some dogs really love this position (even though it may not look so comfortable to humans), it's most likely because it relieves tension and pressure on their lower back and hips, according to Reader's Digest.
Though some cats have longer legs than dogs, it makes sense that they would also find this position comfortable.
Splooting can also help them drop their body temperature on a hot day.
However, splooting can also be a sign of some negative health issues in dogs, especially if they start doing it out of nowhere.
It can be a sign of hip dysplasia or arthritis.
Hip dysplasia, a deformity of the hip ball-and-socket joint, is more common in large dogs.
Why Do Cats Sploot? As for why Blue and other cats sploot, it's actually not a breed trait (sorry, Tuxedo kitties).
Similar to dogs, splooting helps cats regulate their temperature, and some may find it very comfortable and relaxing.
Even though it isn't a breed-specific position, Siamese, Bengal, Persian, and Maine Coon cats tend to sploot.
On the downside, and similar to dogs again, if cats suddenly start splooting, this could be a sign of arthritis.
But for Blue, the Tuxedo cat, this is clearly one of his favorite activities, and it has made him an internet superstar.
Here is the original viral video of Blue's cat sploot.
@jentalesmanthings I’ve learned: the leggies out is called “sploot” and some people refer to tuxedo cats as orca cats. I love it here. 🥹 my baby Blue.

5 Heartwarming Signs Your Anxious Pet Actually Trusts Their Vet, According to Behaviorists
Going to the vet is a normal part of life for any pet parent and their furry companions. However, that doesn't mean that your pet enjoys the process. For one reason or another, it seems that a majority of pets detest visiting the vet and will do everything in their power to avoid it, from hiding under the bed the moment the carrier comes out to trembling in the waiting room.
It's easy to understand why. Vet visits often mean unfamiliar smells, strange sounds, other animals and being handled by someone who isn't their usual human. For pets who are naturally more anxious, all of this can add up to a genuinely stressful experience, and it's not uncommon for you to feel real guilt watching your dog or cat shake, pant or try to bolt for the door.

But here's the good news: even the most nervous pets can come to trust their veterinarian over time, and the signs aren't always so obvious. According to animal behaviorists, trust between a pet and their vet often shows up in small, subtle ways rather than a dramatic transformation from terrified to totally relaxed.
We spoke to behaviorists to break down five heartwarming signs that your anxious pet has actually come to trust their vet, even if they're still not exactly thrilled about the appointment. Learn the signs of trust and how to help build it up over time so your pet may have an easier time at the vet.
Why Fear Is a Normal BaselineJudy Beth Morris/Unsplash
If your pet feels anxious at the vet, there's no need to be embarrassed or concerned—it's actually a pretty normal response.
"From their perspective, the experience can be overwhelming and unpredictable," Susan Nilson, owner and founder of The Cat and Dog House, says. "Research shows that 41 percent of dogs display mild to moderate fear at the vet, while 14 percent experience severe fear. Among cats, 58 percent of owners believe their cat 'hates' veterinary visits, and 38 percent of dog parents believe the same of their dog."
As for the reason why, Nilson says that the vet is typically a place pets associate with negative experiences. Pets often link the vet to unpleasant moments like injections, restraint or medical procedures. Beyond that negative association, the unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells of the clinic may also leave them feeling uneasy and vulnerable.
How Behaviorists Define Trust in AnimalsAyla Verschueren/Unsplash
Although you may wish for your pet to be relaxed and happy at the vet, these aren't always signs of trust. In fact, behaviorists believe there are plenty of other ways that your pet can show that they trust their vet.
Dr. Jo Myers, a veterinarian on Vetster, says, “From a behavioral standpoint, trust means the animal consistently learns that the people handling them are predictable, safe and responsive to their needs. The pet may still be cautious, nervous or even reluctant, but they are able to recover, accept guidance from their owner and tolerate necessary care without feeling completely overwhelmed.”
Dr. Myers adds that excitement isn't the only measure of trust; sometimes it simply comes down to a sense of security and predictability.
Why Your Pet Doesn't Need to Be 'Thrilled' to Be TrustingJudy Beth Morris/Unsplash
While any vet would be glad to open the door to a happy, calm pet, that doesn’t mean it’s the only way they know your dog or cat trusts them.
“Some of the pets I considered my strongest long-term relationships would walk into the clinic cautiously, give me a look that said they knew exactly why they were there and then calmly cooperate because previous experiences had taught them that we would handle them thoughtfully and respectfully,” Dr. Myers says. “That’s trust.”
Dr. Myers says the goal is to get your pet through their necessary medical care with as little distress as possible while preserving their confidence along the way. So, even if your pet isn't thrilled or doing zoomies around the exam room, that doesn't mean they don't trust you or the vet.
Related: 6 Subtle Ways Your Dog Silently Asks for Love, According to Behaviorists
Signs Your Pet Trusts Their VetPriscilla Du Preez/Unsplash
Trust can look different in each pet. However, Dr. Myers says that most of the time, pets exhibit one (or more) of the following behaviors:
- Recovering quickly after handling or procedures
- Taking treats, exploring the room or showing curiosity
- Remaining responsive to their owner
- Allowing examination without escalating into panic
- Returning for future visits without progressively worsening fear
These aren't the only signs of trust, but if your dog or cat shows these behaviors during or after a vet visit, you can feel at ease knowing you've found a vet your pet trusts.
The Secret to Building Long-Term Veterinary TrustReal Natures Food/Unsplash
Even if your pup doesn't trust your vet right away, that doesn't mean the relationship can't improve over time.
“Building long-term veterinary trust starts with recognizing that confidence is created through positive experiences, not forced exposure,” Nilson says. “For both dogs and cats, small changes can make a significant difference in how they feel about going to the vet.”
Nilson adds that one of the best techniques for building positive associations is introducing "happy visits." You can stop by with your pet to receive treats and attention, which lets them explore the space without the pressure of a medical procedure. This way, pets can get comfortable with the environment before any negative experience comes into play.
“Pet owners play an important role as well,” Nilson says. “Animals are highly attuned to human emotions, so remaining calm and relaxed can help reassure an anxious pet. Research shows that 38 percent of cat owners and 26 percent of dog owners feel anxious just thinking about taking their dog or cat to the vet, let alone during the visit itself.”
Taking the pressure off your pet is key to giving them the best experience possible. If possible, this can look like having the vet come out to your car for a vaccination or quick exam, or skipping the waiting room altogether and heading straight into an exam room when it's time.
You can also advocate for your pet's needs by seeking out vets who prioritize emotional well-being over rushing through appointments. It's about balancing your pet's long-term comfort and care—not feeling shame over how they behave in the moment.

Mexico's New World Cup 'Ambassador' Is an Adorable Duck Named Merlin
If a domestic duck sporting a Mexico football jersey and strutting through town during the 2026 FIFA World Cup wasn't on your bingo card this week, you're not alone. But if team sports have taught us anything over the years, it's that fandom comes in many forms, and some supporters will go to extraordinary lengths to show their team loyalty.
Such is the case for Merlin, an adorable pet duck who has unintentionally become a World Cup celebrity. Dressed in Team Mexico drip and strutting through town during celebrations following last week's 2-0 win over South Africa, the feathered cutie quickly captured public attention and, in turn, the hearts of fans across the globe.

Meet Merlin, Mexico's Unlikely World Cup Mascot View this post on InstagramTaking to the streets of Reforma Avenue, the capital's busy cultural hub, fans celebrating Mexico's goals could never have expected to see Merlin coming. Strutting alongside his owner, Karla Gomez and her son, Christian, Merlin weaves expertly through heavy foot traffic in a green Mexico national team jersey perfectly fitted to his size.
"We've always dressed Merlin like a son," Gomez told the Agence France-Presse. "I had to see him looking handsome. We couldn't have him going out naked in the street, right? So I always put little shirts and things on him. We never imagined the reach that this national team jersey would have, and we're grateful for it."
Now a viral celebrity, Merlin has been widely dubbed the country's unofficial "ambassador," with TV stations around the world reportedly eager to highlight the loyal duck and his family.
"It was definitely a surprise," Gomez continued. "We're still in shock to see so many people. It's impressive."

Merlin Effortlessly Steps Into StardomAs fans gathered around, Merlin graciously allowed for plenty of photo ops, seemingly securing his reputation as both a budding celebrity and a good sport. His owner even described an admirer who came up to her, trembling, "almost crying," to give her a piece of art honoring the new star.
"To me, it's important because she told me her grandchildren had sent it from another part of the country. That's what matters to me. This is the legacy I want to leave, or that Merlin wants to leave for the Mexican family," she shared with AFP.
Gomez, who usually sells beverages on the streets of Mexico City with her son and Merlin in tow, now says visitors frequently stop by to take selfies with the duck, who can also be seen taking a dip from time to time in nearby public fountains.
"I'm Merlin's mum. I already consider myself as such," Gómez said. "For us it has been a surprise, truly. The fact that Merlin is the unofficial mascot of the World Cup… we feel very pleased about such a situation and above all that people love my duck."
In a time where cultures from all across the globe are coming together in the name of team loyalty, Merlin is a reminder that fandom doesn't have just one look. From superstitions to lucky charms, fans have long found creative ways to feel closer to their team and victory alike, and Merlin is a fitting example of just that.

Aldi's Vibrant New $5 Find Will Give Pet Parents an Easy Way to Wear Out Their Dog
A ball may be the simplest dog toy ever invented, but on a hot summer afternoon, a ball can become an entire adventure.

Crane Rainbow Sports Ball, $4.99 at AldiThe Crane Rainbow Sports Ball is the kind of ball that makes pet parents stop in the seasonal aisle. Unique shape, colorful and a price that will make you want to buy more than one.
Built for outdoor use, the vibrant rainbow color pattern makes this ball easy to spot in grass. And unlike a classic ball, this one moves unpredictably enough to keep your dog engaged. The size is perfect for easy carrying, and it works for fetch or more games.
Related: See the Rare Moment a Golden Retriever Realizes a Big Ball Is Actually Life-Changing
Five Games to Play With Your DogClassic fetch is the obvious one, and remains one of the most effective games you can play. You throw the ball, the dog retrieves, and you repeat until one of you quits. Because of the irregular bounce of this ball, the unpredictability keeps your dog engaged more than a normal ball. You can vary the throw as well, mixing distance and style to keep your dog working harder.
Next one is water fetch. If you have a lake, river, or any backyard water setup, this ball becomes a perfect water activity. Most dogs will retrieve from shallow water with minimal encouragement.
Find it is a perfect game to play with a ball. Put your dog in a sit or stay position, and then hide the ball in the yard. Start with easy-to-find places, and then move to more challenging spots. Dogs love a challenge, and the effort to track a scent and locate an object is a great source of mental stimulation.
You can use the ball for a race. Why stand still when you can race your dog to the ball? See who reaches it first. Dogs love it when their favorite human becomes part of the game.
If your dog is more interested in having the ball than retrieving it, try a short tug session. Roll the ball out of reach, let your dog commit, and then roll the other way.
Note on Summer HeatRemember, July and August present a challenge for outdoor play. The simple rule is if it is too hot for a comfortable jog, it is too hot for your dog to sprint.
Best times for play sessions are early morning and early evening. Make sure to have water available close by after playtime.
At the end of the day, the best game is the one you play together.

New Guardian Dog Gets the Sweetest Welcome Home From Mama Cows
I don’t ask for much in life, but being lovingly accepted by a group of mama cows does feel like something that would fix at least 40% of my problems.
In this video, the newest guardian dog is getting introduced to the herd, and the whole thing looks like the beginning of a Disney farm movie. The brand-new pup is sitting safely on someone’s lap while three mama cows lean in to meet the tiny new member of the team.
View this post on InstagramThe caption on the post explains that this is the newest guardian getting an enthusiastic welcome home from the mama cows, and that's exactly what it feels like. Not a casual hello. Not a quick inspection. A full barnyard greeting committee.
From the pup’s point of view, you can see the cows getting close, sniffing, kissing, and carefully investigating this little dog like they’ve just received the most important package on the farm. Their giant noses come right in, soft and curious, while the puppy sits there taking in the kind of welcome most of us can only dream about.
View this post on InstagramOne person in the comments joked about the cows reacting like they were soaking up that fresh baby smell. They seem completely fascinated by the new arrival. You can almost hear them saying, “Oh, this one is new. Very small. Very good. Must inspect.”
It’s especially sweet because this puppy may one day grow into a serious working dog with an important job. Guardian dogs are meant to help protect livestock, but every big job has to start somewhere. In this case, it starts on a lap, surrounded by mama cows who appear to be welcoming the baby like he already belongs.
There’s something so tender about watching large animals be gentle with someone small. The cows could easily be overwhelming, but they’re careful. Curious, yes. Very invested, definitely. But still soft enough to make the whole moment feel peaceful.
View this post on InstagramMy dog, Lola, and I would absolutely love to be welcomed into the fold like that. I can only imagine her reaction to three mama cows deciding she was family. She’d probably have a lot to say about it, because Lola always has notes, but I think even she would appreciate the honor.
Just a tiny puppy, a few affectionate cows, and a simple animal moment that makes the world feel a little kinder.
This new guardian may have a lot to learn, but based on this welcome, he’s already part of the herd.

Orange Cat's Face Says It All After Overhearing 2 Words No Pet Wants to Hear
My dogs know certain words by heart. When they hear "treat," "walk," "dinner" or "ride," both my Dachshund and my Pug mix understand exactly what I'm talking about, and it's like music to their ears. Yet when I utter the words "suitcase," "bath" or "vet," they get anxious and hide. These must be universal terms known to the pet world that mean trouble is ahead.
Penny the orange cat recently listened in on her parents' conversation and heard several things known as her "trigger words," and it's easy to see why.
@pennythegingercather ghast is flabbered
♬ original sound - Penny 🐱In the TikTok from @pennythegingercat, the pretty kitty was relaxing in her cat bed when her parents started discussing some matters in the other room. Penny couldn't help but overhear what they were saying and realized they were talking about her.
"Is she ready to go to the vet?" her mom asked, to which her dad replied, "No, I still have to give her a bath."
After hearing those two dreaded words — "vet" and "bath" — Penny's ears perked up and her expression spoke volumes. A look of sheer panic was pasted on her face as she continued to listen. Little did she know that more trouble was headed her way as she heard her dad add that he would also be brushing her teeth.
"But the guests are coming over any minute now," the cat's mom interjected, much to Penny's horror. She seemed to be thinking, "They know I hate having company!"
Penny Didn't Have a Poker FaceWith every sentence, Penny grew more horrified. She heard several more words that were on her "hope to never hear" list.
"Where's her carrier, hon?" Penny's dad asked her mom. "It's next to the vacuum cleaner."

"Oh I found it — it was next to our Costco-sized roll of tin foil."
Other issues were revealed during the conversation that obviously didn't sit well with Penny, including getting shots and her nails trimmed and sharing a carrier with someone named Felix.
Penny looked like she wanted to head for the nearest exit. Every thought of distress she had was written all over her face. Hopefully, her parents were just joking about the whole thing or else she may have looked for an escape.

Maine Coon Kitten Shows New Sibling Who's Boss in Adorable Viral Moment
Our older siblings can show us the ways of the world, and they also like to put us in our place.

How Do Cats Establish a Pecking Order? So the question is, how do cats establish a pecking order or a social hierarchy in a multi-cat household?
The ancestors of domestic kitties were usually solitary hunters, but in multi-cat households today, or even feral cat colonies, natural pecking orders do emerge.
A domestic cat hierarchy can be based on a few factors, including age, sex, and personality traits.
We are only seeing these two Maine Coon kittens in this video, so this hierarchy could just be between them, and then an adult cat may be the one who is really in charge.
The top or dominant cat role is very important, as this feline is in charge of the group's resources.
They will usually perch in a physically high position with the other cats in lower positions, and they will determine when playtime begins and ends.
The alpha cat will also be in charge of grooming the other kitties. Not because the alpha is so nice, but so they can distribute their smell to their underlings.
The top cat also gets the best food and the best place to sleep.
How the underlying cats respond to this social hierarchy can be mixed, with some challenging the alpha cat and others just going with the flow.
It doesn't look like this smaller Maine Coon kitten minds his big sibling taking charge too much in this heartwarming video.

- Goldens have control over their bite force and know how to be careful with little animals.
While Golden Retrievers generally get along with cats, experts suggest that slow, safe, supervised first introductions are paramount, and that your pup is properly trained to "leave it" if any foster kitten is scared. It's also important to offer the baby a place to escape to (preferably high up).
Nick is one lucky boy to have such an amazing foster sister like Bailey. Now, we're going to need Mom to get that kitty a cowboy costume for the next ride around the house!

Tiny Orange Wispy Kitten Looks Like a Fluffy Orange Dandelion, and One Good Sneeze Could End Her
Orange kittens have always looked slightly surprised to be here.
But this tiny little fluff ball somehow looks surprised, exhausted and mildly windswept all at the same time.
And I mean this with the deepest affection possible, but one strong breeze looks like it could launch her directly into the next county.
@rafaelborges0706Gente e ela é lindaaaaa, mesmo parecendo um caroço de manga 🤣 Obs. Ela é muito novinha e não pode tomar banho, mas prometo que terá um upgrade assim que possível . . . #LIVEIncentiveProgram #LIVECanBeEasy #PaidPartnership

The comments section immediately fell in love with the scrungly baby:
- "A mango pit! Yes," one viewer agreed.
- "She's so scrungly," another person wrote.
- One commenter hilariously observed that she looks like "if 7 a.m. Monday morning was a cat."
- Others compared her to a dandelion wisp and even static electricity itself.
- And perhaps my favorite comment simply read, "Oh she's crusty. I love her."

♬ som original - Rafael BorgesIn a follow-up video, her cat dad shared more of her story. After her mother stopped nursing her, the tiny kitten arrived weak and required special formula feeding. She was later hospitalized and treated by a veterinarian after developing hair loss caused by a fungal infection.
Because she's still undergoing treatment, she can't be bathed yet. Her dad explained that moisture and cold could worsen the fungal growth and interfere with her recovery.
Most importantly, though, she's doing well.
She's happy, receiving excellent care and slowly getting stronger every day.
And honestly, that's all that matters.
Because underneath all those wispy little hairs is already a beautiful cat.
Why Kitten Recovery Takes TimeYoung kittens recovering from illness often need weeks of specialized care before their full personalities and appearances begin to shine. Conditions like fungal infections can cause temporary hair loss, and medications may take more than a month before visible improvements appear.
Veterinarians often recommend avoiding unnecessary bathing during treatment because moisture can sometimes make skin conditions worse.
The good news is that kittens are remarkably resilient.
And something tells me this tiny orange dandelion is going to have one heck of a glow-up.

Another talked about how he uses these treats to calm his dog when they bark at everything that moves, writing, "Depending on her barking she gets 1 chew, 2 if out of control and they work fast immediately calming her without knocking her out."
And one reviewer said he purchased them after a veterinarian's recommendation for a nervous dog: "They work great as they really help to mellow her out."
While every dog responds differently, these real-life experiences explain how this product attracts repeat buyers. And this Fourth of July, they can help you with a dog that is afraid of fireworks and loud noises.
How to Prepare for Fourth of JulyCalming supplements, no matter how effective, work best when they are part of a larger strategy. Pet parents should establish a routine, and the easiest way to do that is to start two to three weeks before Independence Day. This should give you an idea for dosing.
On the day itself, exercise your dog earlier in the day. Then, create a calm, quiet room with closed curtains and white-noise music in the background, and give the supplements 30 to 60 minutes before the fireworks begin.
Prepare before the first boom ever happens. Your dog will thank you.

5 Heartwarming Signs Your Dog Is Truly in Tune With You, According to Experts
It’s no secret that dogs are loyal companions, but their connection to humans goes beyond simply following commands or eagerly greeting us at the door. In fact, experts say dogs are incredibly skilled at reading the people they love, from interpreting facial expressions to detecting emotional shifts. However, because dogs communicate differently than people do, it's not always easy to read these subtle signals, which can leave pet parents wondering how connected they really are to each other. To help you better understand your dog, we rounded up five heartwarming signs your dog is deeply in tune with you, according to experts.
After all, while obvious signs of affection like tail wags and cuddles are easy to recognize, some of the strongest indicators of a deep human-canine bond are much more subtle. That's why a lot of people can't tell how strong their dog's emotional attachment to them is and they don’t realize when their pet is constantly communicating emotional information back to them.
By being able to recognize the cues your devoted companion is displaying, you'll be able to discover that you're closer than you thought and see that your pup is truly aware of your emotional state. Here are five often-overlooked signs your dog loves you and has a big heart, so you can cherish your relationship even more.

5 Subtle Signs Your Dog Is Deeply Bonded to You Some dogs are more in tune with their humans than owners realize. Your Dog Looks to You for Guidance When They’re Unsure of What to DoHow your dog shows love can be easy to miss. For instance, when your dog looks at your face before reacting to something unfamiliar, it means they see you as a source of guidance and safety. This heartwarming action is known as social referencing and lets you know they trust you.
“Studies show dogs look to their owners for emotional information when faced with something unfamiliar or ambiguous,” explains Dr. Matthew Murdoch, veterinarian and founder of Ferndale Kennels. “Dogs are brilliant pattern detectives and look at what we’re doing to work out how they should also be feeling or behaving.”
This behavior isn’t limited to potentially stressful situations, though. Dogs with strong social bonds often glance back at their owners during walks, even when everything seems perfectly normal.
“Spontaneous eye contact is one of the clearest indicators of a genuine bond,” says Molly Jespersen, training specialist at Camp Bow Wow. “Your dog isn't responding to a command or anticipating a reward. They’re orienting back to their person out of genuine social awareness, which reflects a level of attunement that develops over time and through consistent interaction.”
Your Dog Mirrors Your Mood Because They’re Emotionally Connected to YouDogs that are closely bonded with their owners don’t just observe emotions, they often mirror them. Because of this, if you’re excited, your dog may become more energetic. If you’re calm or tired, they may settle down beside you. This emotional syncing shows your dog is highly attuned to your behavior and emotional state.
In fact, dogs are surprisingly skilled at reading human emotions through facial expressions, tone of voice, and even scent. “Even human stress odor can affect dogs’ emotional state and choices,” Murdoch says.
Highly bonded dogs often adjust their behavior to reflect their owner's emotional state without any direct cues. “Dogs are continuously reading us,” Jespersen explains. “When a dog shifts from high energy to calm without a single word being spoken, it signals they’ve been studying their person closely. That kind of responsiveness isn’t trained. It’s built through the quality of the relationship.”

Your Dog Yawns When You YawnHave you ever noticed your dog yawning after you do? It may look like coincidence, but research suggests it can reflect a deeper social and emotional connection. In fact, studies have found that dogs are more likely to yawn after seeing a familiar human yawn than after observing a stranger. This adorable behavior, known as contagious yawning, may be linked to empathy.
“Contagious yawning in dogs is a marker of empathic response,” Jespersen says. “When it occurs more consistently with one person than others, it suggests a degree of emotional synchrony that goes beyond familiarity."
While it’s a subtle dog behavior, it can be one of the quieter signs that your dog is emotionally in tune with you. “It’s one of those behaviors that’s easy to overlook, but worth paying attention to,” she adds.
Your Dog Tries to Comfort You When You’re UpsetWhen your dog comes to you, licks you, or softens their body language while you’re upset, it’s not guilt or confusion, it’s an attempt to comfort you. Many pet parents misinterpret this behavior as their dog “feeling bad,” but behavior experts say it’s actually indicates emotional responsiveness.
“A dog displaying soft tail wags, lowered body posture and attempts to lick you when you're upset isn't showing remorse,” says Sarah Rutten, canine behaviorist and founder of the Canine Perspective. “They're responding to the change they've detected in you, and actively trying to repair the connection.”
Dogs don’t experience guilt in the same way humans do, but they are highly sensitive to shifts in tone, body language, and emotional energy.
“What we're seeing is appeasing behavior: A dog has read that their human is upset, and is working hard to restore harmony,” she continues. “It's a really sophisticated social response that's entirely focused on you and your emotional state.”
Your Dog Waits by the Door Because They’re Attached to YouDoes your dog regularly wait near the door, windows, or entryways when you’re away? If so, it’s often a sign of attachment. Dogs with strong bonds to their owners tend to monitor for their return, staying aware of patterns and timing.
While this behavior can sometimes overlap with separation anxiety, it doesn’t always indicate stress. In many cases, it reflects trust and expectation. “They’re confident their person will return, and they’re simply staying alert for that moment,” Jespersen says. “That vigilance is actually a sign of trust, not fear.”
For many dogs, watching for your return is just another way of staying connected to you throughout the day. “A dog that is highly attuned to you isn’t just simply obedient,” Murdoch says. “They’re both emotionally and behaviorally connected. Pets like this are great companions, although also a responsibility as changes to your world can affect them deeply.”

Mom's Clever Trick for Getting Her Dachshund to Take a Pill Is About to Go Viral
Getting dogs to take medication can sometimes feel like participating in an Olympic event nobody asked for. Dog parents everywhere have hidden pills in peanut butter, cheese, hot dogs and approximately seventeen other foods, only to watch their pets somehow spit out the one thing they're supposed to eat.
Which is why one clever Dachshund mom may have accidentally discovered the funniest solution imaginable. And honestly, I can't believe how well it worked.
@dora_.the_.explorerrNo cheese or nothin
♬ original sound - Mar 🩵The hilarious clip was shared by the TikTok account for @dora_.the_.explorerr and stars Louie, an adorable cream, long-haired Dachshund who apparently suffers from a very common canine condition known as "wanting whatever Mom has."
Related: Dachshund Gets Stuck in a Sleeve, and It’s Peak Sausage Dog Chaos
In the video, Louie's dog mom pretends to eat his flea medication herself before dramatically dropping it on the floor.
Then she starts protesting.
"No! Don't get it! Oh no!"
Naturally, Louie interprets this as the greatest game ever invented and immediately races over to gobble up the forbidden treasure.
Honestly, dogs really do want whatever they're not supposed to have.
The comments section was cracking up:
- "I tried this and my dog looked at me like I'm stupid."
- "Wait, this is so smart."
- "Okay delete this so my dog doesn't see it."
And honestly, that last comment made me laugh the hardest.
Because somehow dogs can ignore expensive treats you've purchased specifically for them, yet become absolutely obsessed with a random sock, a leaf or something they just watched you "accidentally" drop.
As someone who has been a cat and dog mom long enough to understand that reverse psychology sometimes works better than logic, I have to admit this mom might be onto something.
Louie certainly seemed convinced.

What to Do If You Encounter an Off-Leash Dog While Walking Your Own
If you have a reactive or anxious pup, there’s nothing more stressful than encountering an off-leash dog while you’re both out on a walk. Although many dog parents may say that their pups are well-trained enough to handle being off-leash, that doesn’t mean it’s always a great idea, especially when you’re around many other dogs. Even if a dog is trained enough to be off-leash, that doesn’t account for the many reactive pups whose behavior can change in a split second.
Although many pet parents want to train their dogs to the point of being able to trust that they will return if they're let off-leash, having a dog roam on their own can potentially become dangerous for all pups involved.

If you and your furry friend encounter an off-leash dog on a walk, it’s important to keep calm and act swiftly. Within a matter of seconds, these encounters can quickly turn aggressive, resulting in an unfortunate situation for all involved. Even the most well-tempered dogs may get agitated or feel cornered in an encounter with an off-leash dog, and it’s important to know the proper steps to follow to avoid any injuries or worse outcomes.
Here's how to stay safe and how to handle an off-leash dog if you and your pup encounter one, straight from dog behavior and training experts.
How to Read an Approaching Dog’s Body LanguageHelena Lopes/Unsplash
Although not every dog is a threat to your furry friend, it doesn’t hurt to know some of the signs that may say otherwise. Knowing how to read an approaching dog’s body language can help give you a better understanding of what you can expect from an oncoming pup and whether you’ll have to take protective maneuvers to safeguard your dog.
“The first thing to understand is that a wagging tail does not automatically mean a friendly dog,” says Molly Jespersen, a training specialist at Camp Bow Wow. “You have to read the whole body. A dog that's relaxed and genuinely curious will have a loose, wiggly posture, soft eyes, an open mouth and a tail that wags in a wide, flowing motion. That's a dog that may just want to say hello.”
On the other hand, Jespersen notes that a more rigid stance may signal a greater risk. Stiff legs, a high and still tail, hard eyes with whites showing, ears pushed forward, and a closed mouth are all signs that a dog may be feeling on edge.
While these cues are helpful, it's also important to take in the full picture and context of the situation.
The First 3 Seconds: Assessing the Threat of an Off-Leash DogJiasong Huang/Unsplash
When encountering an off-leash dog, the first three seconds are key for assessing the situation. In those few seconds, pet parents need to quickly examine the context and situation to determine whether it has the potential to escalate.
“Read the body language for attack mode, stress or friendliness,” says Sally Grottini, JustAnswer dog behavior specialist and a former therapy dog evaluator and American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen evaluator. “If the body is stiff, hackles are raised, the tail is tucked or straight out and wagging, ears are flattened against the head, and the dog is giving a hard stare, you want to avoid that dog and get ready for a potential attack.”
In those first moments, a friendly dog may shift from a loose body to a happy wag, or drop into a play bow. On the other hand, those same seconds might reveal the warning signs of an aggressive stance, and fast action will be needed.
Why the "He’s Friendly!" Yell From Across the Park Doesn't MatterHonest Paws/Unsplash
It's natural for pet parents to vouch for their dogs, but good intentions don't always translate to safe encounters.
“'Friendly' often describes that dog's temperament in controlled settings, not what is about to happen in an uncontrolled encounter," Jespersen says. "Even a genuinely friendly dog can rush up and greet in a way that is rude by canine standards, which can trigger fear, reactivity, or a fight in a dog that is on leash and cannot get away.”
Even if the off-leash dog means no harm, leashed dogs are often at a disadvantage—and they know it. When leashed, a dog cannot curve away, sniff the ground or retreat. No matter what the other owner yells from across the park, your leashed dog cannot respond the way they naturally would.
The "Treat Scatter" Technique: Using Food as a Tactical DistractionJudy Beth Morris/Unsplash
When in doubt, treats can be your best tool. There's nothing most dogs love more than a good snack—and in a tense moment, that can work in your favor.
Jespersen highlights the "treat scatter" technique as one of the most underrated tools for walks. This method involves tossing a handful of small treats onto the ground in the path of an oncoming dog to break their focus and redirect their attention. While the dog sniffs and forages, you can use those precious seconds to safely create distance.
“Sniffing and foraging activate what behavioral scientists call the 'seeking system' in the brain, which is calming by nature,” Jespersen says. “It lowers arousal, redirects attention and pulls the dog into a nose-down, focused sniffing mode rather than a forward-charging one.”
This won't work for every dog, but it's a great first attempt when you sense trouble coming, so plan to keep some loose treats somewhere easy to access on every walk.
How to Body-Block an Approaching Dog=Maksym Kaharlytskyi/Unsplash
For a more physical approach, body-blocking can be a highly effective method to try. Grottini describes this technique as using your body as a shield between your dog and the approaching one. To maximize your presence, plant yourself in a firm, wide stance in front of your dog, raise your hands to appear larger, and shift left or right to mirror the oncoming dog's movement. Yelling can also startle the dog or alert nearby people.
You may also want to carry a fanny pack, a large treat pouch or a small umbrella as an additional buffer. The goal is simply to create any barrier possible between the two dogs.
The Danger of Retreating: Why You Should Never Turn and RunAnna Dudkova/ Unsplash
When a dog comes charging, the instinct to turn and run is completely understandable, but it may actually make things significantly worse.
“Running triggers [the] chase instinct in most dogs,” Jespersen says. “Even a dog that had no aggressive intent can switch into prey-drive mode the moment you or your dog begins to flee. The act of retreating fast signals that you are something to be chased, and for many dogs, that instinct is impossible to override once activated.”
Instead, work on calmly creating distance between the dogs or using the treat scatter method to break the dog's focus. Moving your dog out of the approaching dog's line of sight can help buy you enough time to get to safety.

What to Do If an Off-Leash Dog Attacks Your DogManuel Meza/Unsplash
If the worst happens and an attack begins, staying as composed as possible and acting quickly may help reduce the risk of serious injury.
"If an attack starts, you want to drop your dog's leash and take it off if possible, so its instinct to fight back or run to safety is not hampered by the leash," Grottini says.
Once the leash is dropped, swing it high in the air in front of your body, as this can distract and intimidate the attacking dog while also serving as a protective tool for you and your pup.
Other options Grottini recommends include using a bite stick placed into the side of a dog's mouth between the molars to release the grip of a bite. If you don't have one, look for anything similar nearby. A spray shield or halt pepper spray may also help deter an attacking dog, though effectiveness varies. Loud noises, like a foghorn or similar device, can also stop a dog before an attack fully escalates. Grottini recommends keeping one in your fanny pack or treat pouch as a precaution.
Information to Gather From the Off-Leash Dog's OwnerIlyuza Mingazova/Unsplash
After an incident, documentation is key. Grottini says to use your phone to photograph any injuries to you or your dog, and to collect witness information, including names, addresses and recorded statements if possible.
If the other dog's owner is present, get their name, address and phone number. Note the dog's breed, color, size and any identifying details. If you can, request the dog's vet information for vaccination records.
When and How to Report the Incident to Animal ControlBharathi Kannan/Unsplash
If anyone is bitten, call 911, as a formal report will be necessary.
"Then, contact your local animal control and report the incident to have a record made of the attack," Grottini says. "They would know of any other reports of attacks involving this dog, and may act against the owner."
It's a good idea to keep your local animal control number saved in your phone. If you don't have it, your local non-emergency police line can point you to the appropriate contact.
Although no one wants to see such situations occur, being prepared for them is part of being a pet parent. While you can train your own pup as much as you want, it’s impossible to track and guess the behaviors of dogs around you. Having these steps in your back pocket can help you stay calm, act quickly, and keep both you and your dog safe in an encounter with an off-leash dog.

These 8 Morning Habits Can Make Your Dog Happier All Day, Say Experts
Every dog parent wants the same thing: a happy, healthy companion who feels loved, secure, and excited to greet each new day. While dogs thrive on routine, many people overlook how important the first few hours of their day can be. Because of that, we rounded up 8 morning habits experts say can help dogs feel happier all day long, according to experts.
The best part? Many of these activities take only a few minutes but can make a lasting difference in how your pet feels. So, if you've ever wondered how to make your dog happier or what veterinarians recommend for canine well-being, these tips are for you.
“One of the biggest mistakes owners make is assuming that a content dog simply just needs enough exercise,” says Dr. Kathryn Dench, veterinarian and chief scientific advisor at Paw Origins. “However, in reality, how a dog's day starts often has a disproportionate impact on their mood, behavior and stress levels for the rest of the day. That why their morning routine is essentially the foundation upon which the rest of the day is built.”

Small, consistent habits in the first hour after waking can help create a calmer, more confident and joyful dog. So, what is the best morning routine for a dog include? Below are eight simple morning tasks that veterinarians and trainers recommend. See how many you can incorporate!
Start the Day With One-on-One TimeIt can be tempting to welcome your dog with lots of excitement the moment you wake up, but experts say that approach can sometimes lead to overstimulation, especially in energetic or anxious dogs. Instead, try starting the morning with a few quiet, focused moments together before diving into your routine or checking your phone.
A calm hello, gentle affection, or simply sitting beside your dog can help them feel secure, grounded, and connected to you as the day begins. This small moment of attention sets a steady tone that can carry through the rest of the day.
Dench recommends keeping morning interactions calm and predictable. “This can help prevent over-arousal, particularly in excitable or anxious dogs,” she explains.
Over time, a relaxed start can help dogs feel more balanced and settled, especially those who are naturally high-energy or sensitive to change.
Help Your Dog Feel Safe With a Predictable Morning RoutineDogs don’t just enjoy routine, they rely on it to feel safe in their environment. Even small changes in a morning schedule can affect how secure and settled they feel throughout the day.
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to support your dog's emotional well-being is to keep mornings predictable. Dogs feel more secure when they know what to expect, and consistency helps reduce anxiety and stress.
That means offering fresh water, providing a morning walk and serving a complete and balanced breakfast on a set schedule. “Feeding at roughly the same time each morning helps regulate digestion, reduces anxiety around mealtimes and creates a sense of security,” Dench says. “In the clinic, I frequently see dogs with mild stress-related digestive issues that improve when owners establish a more consistent daily routine.”
Predictability helps dogs feel in control of their environment, which can make them more relaxed throughout the day.
Let Your Dog Explore the World With a Morning Sniffari WalkWhat looks like a simple walk to us is actually one of the most important parts of your dog’s mental day. Rather than rushing through a walk, allow your dog a few extra minutes to investigate interesting smells, bushes and patches of grass. Some trainers even refer to these leisurely scent-focused outings as a “sniffari."
Dogs experience the world largely through their noses, and scent exploration provides valuable mental stimulation.
“In practice, I often find that dogs who are given opportunities to use their noses appear calmer and more settled throughout the day,” Dench says.
Help Your Dog Burn Energy and Start the Day Calm and HappyMany behavior issues later in the day actually start with one simple missing step in the morning—movement. Many furry companion spend part of their day alone at home, resting in a crate or waiting for their owners to return from work. Before asking them to settle for extended periods, experts recommend giving them an opportunity to move.
“A dog sent into a crate or a quiet home, without any prior physical outlet, is being asked to regulate energy that has had nowhere to go," says Molly Jespersen, training specialist at Camp Bow Wow. “Even a short, purposeful walk prior to separation makes a measurable difference in how calmly a dog settles.”
Morning exercise is about more than burning calories. It also allows dogs to release tension and interact with the world around them. “A dog who has had the opportunity to move, sniff and engage with their environment before being asked to settle is almost always going to transition more smoothly than one who has not,” she adds.
Strengthen Your Bond With a 2-Minute Morning Training SessionJust a few minutes of focused interaction in the morning can completely change how connected and confident your dog feels for the rest of the day. Practicing skills such as sit, stay, touch or recall encourages dogs to focus, think and communicate with their owners.
“These mini-sessions also reinforce communication and confidence, which can have lasting benefits beyond obedience,” Dench says.
Short morning training exercises can be especially helpful for intelligent, energetic dogs that need mental challenges to remain content.
Turn Breakfast Into a Fun Mental Challenge for Your DogBreakfast doesn’t just fuel your dog’s body, it can also shape their mood and mental energy for hours. That's why breakfast can also become an opportunity for enrichment. Rather than serving food in a standard bowl every day, consider occasionally using a snuffle mat, puzzle feeder or food-dispensing toy.
These tools encourage dogs to work for their food, engaging their brains while slowing down eating.
“Research has shown that enrichment activities can reduce boredom and improve welfare, and in my experience they are especially valuable for intelligent breeds that otherwise become restless during the day,” Dench says.
Even a few extra minutes of problem-solving can help satisfy a dog's natural instincts.
Make the Most of Your Dog’s Most Focused Morning HoursThere’s a short window each morning when your dog is naturally more focused, calm and ready to learn.
“This can be an ideal time to introduce new skills, practice cooperative care exercises or reinforce desirable behaviors,” Dench explains. “Even a few minutes can make a meaningful difference over time.”
Whether teaching a new trick or reinforcing existing skills, morning practice sessions can build confidence and strengthen the bond between dogs and their owners.
Use Morning Cuddles to Check Your Dog’s Health and ComfortSome of the earliest signs of health issues in dogs are first noticed during simple everyday moments, like morning cuddles. While petting your dog, take a few moments to run your hands over their body and look for anything unusual.
“Running your hands over your dog's body allows you to detect new lumps, skin issues, sore spots, ticks or changes in coat condition early,” Dench advises. “Some of the most significant health problems I've diagnosed started with an owner noticing a subtle change during a routine daily interaction.”
Early detection can make a significant difference when it comes to treating many health conditions.
Collectively, these habits might take only a few extra minutes each morning, but they address many of a dog's most important needs, including predictability, mental stimulation, physical activity, social connection and enrichment.
“In my experience, dogs who consistently receive these elements tend to be calmer, more confident and easier to live with throughout the day,” Dench concludes.
Why Small Morning Habits Matter So Much for Your DogA happy dog isn’t created through big, complicated routines or expensive products—it’s built through small, consistent moments shared every day. The way your dog starts the morning can shape how they feel, behave, and connect with you for the rest of the day.
Whether it’s a calm greeting, a short walk, a few minutes of training, or simply sitting together in quiet company, these small habits send a powerful message: you are safe, you are loved, and you belong here.
Over time, these little morning moments add up in a big way. They help reduce stress, build trust, and strengthen the bond between you and your dog. And in the end, that connection is what truly creates a happier, healthier companion—one morning at a time.
