Trust is a crucial part of bonding with your cat, making it important for your furry companion to know that you’ll always have their back. But since they can’t tell you when they feel safe or not, it's tricky to know what's gong through their head. After all, cats communicate differently than people do, as they share their emotions through their body language and behaviors. To help you understand your cat better, we gathered 7 tiny things cats do only when they feel protected, according to pet behaviorists. That way, you can start picking up on the sweet signs your cat feels completely at ease and safe at home and with you.

“A cat’s sense of safety is the foundation of their emotional well-being,” says Christine Alexiou, certified feline behaviorist and founder of Christine’s Cat Behavior and Training. “Cats are both predators and prey animals, which means they are constantly assessing their environment for potential threats.” 

Because of this, their instincts usually keeps them guarded about who they trust, which may make you wonder, "Does my cat love me and feel safe around me?" The truth is, experts say a cat new to a household may take some time to feel comfortable and realize you want to look after them. "It's important for pet parents need to provide the right environment and work to forge a bond with them,” explains Rita Reimers, a certified cat behaviorist.

So, how can you tell if you make your cat feel safe or if you have more work to do? The signs are admittedly subtle, but once you notice them, you'll feel great knowing your cat sees you as their guardian and safe place.

Every cat is an individual and, as a result, your cat may have their own way of showing they feel protected. Still, experts say these are common behaviors your cat is at ease in your company. 

They Give You a ‘Cat Kiss’

One sign your cat feels safe is when they slow blink, which is a signal of trust. “When a cat deliberately closes their eyes around someone, they are temporarily reducing their awareness of the environment,” Alexiou explains. “Because cats are naturally cautious animals, this action suggests they feel comfortable enough to let their guard down in your presence.”

They ‘Loaf’

Cats don’t always show affection in obvious ways, but when they know that you're going to protect them they are more at ease, even in the way they sit.

"You may see your cat loafing, which is when cats sit with their paws tucked under their body, is a relaxed resting posture," Alexiou reveals. “While they can still move, if necessary, this posture often indicates that the cat feels comfortable enough to settle and conserve energy without remaining on high alert."

They Turn Their Back to You

Don’t mistake your cat turning its back toward you as a sign of rejection: It’s actually a compliment. “A cat who does not trust their people will not put themselves in a position to not see who is approaching,” Reimers notes. “They are in a vulnerable state when they can’t see what’s happening behind them, but they trust you enough to turn their backs anyway.”

So, if you notice your furry family member dong this behavior, know it's something cats only do when they feel safe and protected by whoever they are around.

They Show Their Belly

If you're curious what it means if your cat shows you their belly, it's a good thing! "This is a vulnerable position that your cat won’t show to just anyone," says Marilyn Krieger, certified cat behavior consultant and founder of The Cat Coach. “A cat’s stomach protects vital organs, so if they expose their belly to you, they trust you.”

Therefore, it's their way of revealing that they know you'll protect them and watch over them if they're near you because to you, you're their hero.

They Yawn Deeply

A deep yawn doesn't mean you're boring your pet. It actually shows that they know they have nothing to worry about when they're around you. In their eyes, you're not just their pet parent, you're their guardian and part of their inner circle who watches out for them.

“Relaxed, unhurried yawns often occur when a cat is transitioning into a calmer emotional state,” Alexiou says. “When combined with other relaxed body language signals, deep yawns can indicate that a cat feels comfortable and secure in their environment.”

They Eat Calmly

A calm, unhurried mealtime might not seem like a big deal, but for cats, it’s one of the clearest signs they feel completely safe in their home. When a cat is comfortable, they don’t feel the need to rush or stay alert while eating—they can simply enjoy their food. “When cats are relaxed while eating, this shows they trust their environment, their people, and other pets,” Reimers says.

Their Tail Quivers

Have you ever seen your pet’s tail standing verticaly and then slightly quiver? "This is common when your cat cat behavior when they greet a trusted person," Alexiou says. “This is frequently associated with positive emotional arousal, excitement, and affection. In many social situations, it is a sign that the cat is happy and comfortable interacting with someone they trust.”

This is NOT a bark. It's not even a proper howl. It's more like a sleepy little "woo" from a dog who has just woken up, remembered he is deeply loved, and decided the world needed to know.

Golden Retrievers are already famous for being the sweetest, but senior Goldens have a different kind of magic. Their faces get a little whiter. Their pace gets a little slower. Their routines become sacred. And suddenly every little noise, paw tap, head tilt, and sleepy greeting feels like something you want to save forever.

Bruce's morning voice has that exact magic. It's so small, but it says so much. It says he is a comfortable and happy old man. He knows he's safe and has opinions, even if they are delivered in the tiniest old-man dog voice possible.

One person summed up the whole experience perfectly by calling him a tiny baby "woo," and really, there's no better job title for the old timer. He's not just a senior Golden. He's a sleepy morning legend. A soft little sunshine boy. A professional heart-destroyer in golden fur.

The hilarious clip was shared by the TikTok account for @Mr.theodoremaximus and stars Theodore, an almost one year old German Shepherd who apparently has a personal vendetta against reflected light.

According to his pet parent, Theodore only reacts this way to reflections from a phone or even a retainer case. Most of the time they don't bother him, but if he's understimulated or has been sitting still for too long, all bets are off.

The result?

Absolute chaos.

In the video, Theodore spots the reflection and immediately decides the most logical course of action is to launch a full scale attack on the roof of the car. Not the phone. Not the source of the reflection.

Just the ceiling.

And honestly, I laughed because dogs somehow manage to be brilliant and deeply ridiculous at the exact same time.

The comments section had plenty to say.

"To this day I'm still confused how dogs are so freaking smart and so freaking dumb at the same time," one person wrote.

Another joked, "You have to sit him down and teach him the physics of reflection."

"Try letting him drive next time," another viewer suggested.

One person lovingly commented, "This is proof that dumb and cute can happen at the same time!"

And one German Shepherd parent admitted they have teeth marks in their own car from the exact same behavior.

Several experienced dog parents also offered an important reminder that reflection chasing can sometimes become obsessive, particularly in breeds like German Shepherds. Some commenters encouraged avoiding reflective triggers when possible since these behaviors can intensify rather than disappear over time.

Honestly, poor Theodore looks less like he's being naughty and more like he's having the dog equivalent of a software glitch.

Many dogs naturally enjoy chasing movement, but certain breeds, including German Shepherds, can become especially focused on lights, shadows and reflections. Because these "targets" can never actually be caught, some dogs may become increasingly frustrated or obsessive.

Veterinary behaviorists often recommend minimizing exposure to triggers and redirecting dogs toward games and activities that provide a more satisfying outlet for their energy.

Which sounds very sensible.

But I still can't stop laughing at the fact that Theodore apparently looked at the car roof and thought:

As the dog of an influencer, Lady, the Dachshund, already has a very glamorous life, but it just got a bit more luxe as this little pup is heading to Paris!

Move over, Emily in Paris, here comes a Dachshund in Paris!

Though for most dogs, a 7-hour transatlantic flight would be daunting, this seasoned traveler, who also happens to be a Dachshund, takes it all in stride and class.

Despite the flight being delayed twice and Lady refusing to use the bathroom for dogs at the airport (we get it, Lady), she slept the entire flight and didn't make a peep.

Her mom, Abby Baffoe, revealed that they both took drugs to help them sleep, but obviously, she consulted with her vet first on the proper dosage and drug.

Not only did the little pup sleep during the entire duration of the flight, but she slept in the car on the way to the hotel, too!

And finally, they arrived in Paris at their beautiful hotel, and Lady woke up!

In another video from the trip, we see Lady enjoying some lovely room service and accompanying her mom to a French hair salon.

We shouldn't be surprised that Lady is a naturally perfect traveler, as she often travels with her mom to her hotels (including staycations) and does photo shoots at hotels.

Actually, when her mom brought her home to NYC for the first time, their flight got delayed, and they had to stay at a hotel overnight on their first night together.

This little Dachshund was born to be in hotels, especially in Paris.

Why Paris is a Surprisingly Dog-Friendly City

It's easy for Lady to be such a seasoned traveling pro in a place like Paris, as it's actually an extremely dog-friendly city.

According to BonjourParis.com, the dog population in Paris is 300,000, and with a human population of around 2.1 million, that means there is one dog for every seven Parisians. 

Clearly, this is a city that loves dogs, so it has made itself friendly to visiting dogs as well, with dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, and shops, and plenty of green space and parks for pups to explore, including the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes.

Both of my dogs ignore the idea of personal space. My Dachshund and my Pug mix step on each other, sit on each other, take food out of each other's bowls — obviously, they have a very comfortable, easygoing relationship where etiquette gets tossed aside.

Molly the Chihuahua and Zeus the Pit Bull seem to have the same sort of dynamic, despite their massive size difference.

In the TikTok from @r3lnduh, Zeus was lying on the floor in front of the sofa minding his own business, trying to catch some shuteye. Molly came in the room and wanted to get cozy on the couch.

The clever Chihuahua knew she needed a boost due to her short stature, so she improvised. Seeing her fur baby brother sprawled on the rug in the perfect spot, Molly figured out a way up.

She placed her front paws on Zeus's back but felt a little unsteady and backed off. Getting a better angle of her path, Molly got some momentum for a full jump on the sleeping Pit Bull. Though she was a little wobbly once she had all four paws on Zeus's back, Molly was able to hop up to the couch just as the pretty Pittie woke up.

Zeus was still drowsy after Molly accomplished her mission, and he seemed confused by what just happened. The expression on his face seemed to say, "What the heck was that?"

Followers got a kick out of the comical scene and gave Molly props for problem solving.

"Molly almost needed a step stool FOR Zeus," one pointed out.

"He’s like 'really'?!" another noted.

"Using her resources," a follower praised.

Molly and Zeus Make Their Size Difference Work

Viewers of the video noticed the vast difference in size between the small yet wide Chihuahua and muscular Pit Bull. The companionable canines appeared quite comfortable with each other and even capitalized on their physical contrast.

Large dogs can often live and play with small dogs, depending on breed, age, and temperament. Supervision in the early days of the relationship is essential to make sure there is mutual respect and no aggressive behavior.

Orion has the kind of face that makes you feel like you've been called into a meeting about your life choices.

This sweet cat was adopted from a cat cafe along with his brother, who isn't technically related but absolutely counts where it matters. Before finding their home, the two had already been through a lot together, spending a whole year side by side through shelters and a foster home. That kind of bond will turn kitties into family fast.

When Orion was adopted, he only had three teeth. But if you think that slowed him down, please take several seats, because this guy has no interest in your pity. His family even tried offering him wet food, probably assuming a cat with just a few teeth would prefer the softer side of life. Orion, however, remains committed to crunchies. The man has standards.

And then there's the face!

Orion's little lip gives him a permanent smirk that makes him look like he's quietly judging every single decision happening around him. You could be folding laundry, opening mail, or standing in your kitchen eating shredded cheese straight from the bag, and Orion would still look like he's thinking, "Interesting. Embarrassing, but interesting."

One viewer basically admitted Orion's expression is relatable, saying his face matches how many of us feel most days, teeth or no teeth. Honestly, fair. Orion's resting judgment face speaks for generations.

If your kitty has missing teeth or dental problems, the goal is comfort, not perfection. Watch how they eat, keep an eye on weight changes, and offer food options that are easy for them to manage. Some cats prefer wet food, while others, like Orion, may still insist on crunchies because our feline friends love keeping us humble.

VCA Animal Hospitals shares that dental issues in cats can be painful and may require veterinary care, including tooth extraction in some cases. That's why it's worth checking in with your vet if you notice drooling, pawing at the mouth, bad breath, appetite changes, or trouble chewing.

Some dogs look forward to the park for sniffs. Some look forward to it to romp around in the grass. Some for the play time with their best friends.

Why Golden Retrievers Are Social Butterflies

Like so many traits in dogs, Goldens are highly-sociable, friendly creatures largely in part due to selective, specific breeding. For generations, breeders of golden retrievers focused on creating dogs who were non-territorial and great with people. This combined with their instinct to people please, makes them the dogs we know as bubbly, social butterflies.

On top of this, some research suggests that Goldens have similar genetic markers as humans which make them predisposed to interact more similarly to people. Their biological makeup makes them naturally friendlier dogs and crave approval and social interaction.

While genetics can't be denied, in order for a dog (breed aside!) to be well socialized, the training and focus must come early and deliberately. A puppy's environment and upbringing play a critical role in ensuring they'll be well behaved dogs. Making sure they are exposed to new environments and proper training helps this immensely.

Whether it be genetics or training, it's undeniable that Goldens are truly in it for the pets. Especially ones like Joey, who will have no problem letting you know that's what they're really after.

Summer is basically here and that means longer, warmer, balmier days. We're all feeling the heat; our pets included!

How to Keep Dogs Safe in Summer

All jokes aside, it is actually very important to manage your dog during the summer months, as hot temperatures can pose serious health risks. Some ways to keep your beloved pup safe in the summertime should include:

• Always making sure they have access to water.
• Adjust your walking time to when its cooler outside, like in the early mornings or closer to dusk.
• Along the same line, avoid walking places with asphalt when temperatures get too hot.
• Consider things like cooling mats and paw protection when necessary.
• Use sunblock on their noses, ears, and even skin with certain breeds.
• Never leave your dog places like a hot car or in exposed, direct sunlight with no access to shade.
• Watch for signs of heat stroke like excessive panting, disorientation, drooling, and an elevated heart rate.

Ultimately, a lot of what protecting your dog boils down to is simply paying attention. And making sure that when they innovate, like Mr. Leo, they have your full support.

In May, more than 1,500 Beagles were rescued from Ridglan Farms, a Wisconsin breeding and research facility. These dogs were subjected to horrible conditions and didn't receive any sort of attention or affection as they struggled to just get through each day. In the TikTok from @tlcwithmsb, Junie B was snuggling with her foster mom. Apparently, the precious pooch inadvertently derailed her mom's gardening plans.

"I'm trying to finish putting together my garden bed," the pet parent explained, "and this little one said, nope, time for a break."

Junie B's mom was more than happy to stop working to give the precious pooch some attention, considering what the Beagle had been through when at the breeding facility.

"She went nearly 7 years without a cuddle," the onscreen text revealed as the foster mom gave more details.

"She had been sleeping on my little couch over there and she came off and came over and wants a cuddle," her mom said. "If she wants a cuddle, she gets a cuddle, because she went 7 years without one. So, I'm going to give her a cuddle."

Junie B's proud parent described her as "confident and brave but still apprehensive". Naturally, cuddling is her favorite activity so far.

Junie B Is Learning How to Eat

The fur baby was given water through a drip holder and mushy food while at Ridglan Farms, so she is slowly acclimating to eating and drinking from bowls.

"She doesn't know how to eat kibble or chew things," her mom continued, adding that she recently made Junie B some homemade chicken and rice. "She just started to chew some soft food today. Otherwise it's just mush that she's used to."

Aside from Kermit's sleepy-looking eyes, it's hard to ignore that he's a lot smaller than other felines. It's because he has dwarfism, which is caused by genetic defects that affect hormone production, bone growth, and cartilage development. It's extremely rare in cats, and there are two types.

1. Osteochondrodysplasia is the most common, affecting bone and cartilage, leaving the kitten with a normal-sized body but with short, stumpy legs and a slightly oversized head.
2. Pituitary dwarfism is rarer and happens when the pituitary gland doesn't produce enough growth hormone. These kittens are more proportionate and may have developmental issues and metabolic abnormalities.

If you're unsure whether your small cat has dwarfism, a vet can confirm it. Because of the genetic abnormalities, some issues can develop, like enlarged joints, spinal and facial deformities, early-onset osteoarthritis, and even heart problems. With the right medical protocol, cats with dwarfism can live long, happy lives.

Black Diamond Maine Coons specializes in beautiful European-style Maine Coons, typically in less-common colors. They have a lot of Smoke kittens, a lot of Torties, and some kittens who combine both! It was actually the kitten in this video who started the cattery's Tortie Smoke obsession!

Her name hasn't been shared, but we know she's 11 months old. There was another Tortie in her litter that they just couldn't part with, though her pattern is less extreme than this one. This girl's half Orange Smoke face is just too perfect!

How cute is the chocolate Great Dane puppy who's playing Scooby?!

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! made its debut as an animated series on September 13, 1969, on CBS and was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions.

It would go on to become one of the most popular and iconic cartoons of all time, mainly because of its dog character, the beloved Scooby.

There were actually five live-action films made starting in 2002—Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins, Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster and the series Daphne & Velma—with the first two starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Matthew Lillard, but Scooby remained animated.

So, to have a real Great Dane puppy featured in this new series is quite incredible for fans.

What Breed Is Scooby-Doo Supposed To Be?

Writers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears of Hanna-Barbera created Scooby-Doo, and the character's design was by Iwao Takamoto.

All the creators of Scooby based him on the Great Dane breed, as he was quite large but very friendly and loyal.

For reference, Great Danes can be as large as 32 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 110 and 175 pounds.

They're also known for being great family dogs (and the perfect pups for the crime-solving gang of Mystery Incorporated).

Though the cartoon and CGI versions of Scooby could talk to the other characters and often walked on their hind legs, real Great Danes don't do that (though it made for fun entertainment).

It will be interesting to see how the new series portrays Scooby since they are using a real dog actor.

Will he still talk? Will he do cartoonish action stunts?

We did find that Scooby-Doo will be voiced by actor Frank Welker, so we assume this will be a talking dog (with the help of special effects).

The rest of the cast of Scooby-Doo: Origins includes McKenna Grace as Daphne, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, Maxwell Jenkins as Fred, and Paul Walter Hauser as Scooby’s parent, and of course, this adorable puppy actor and then a grown Great Dane will most likely play older Scooby.

In the TikTok from @jolobollin, Bindi was lying on the bed with a toy. Her dense, golden coat was beautifully brushed and looked well-maintained, yet a bit toasty if high temps were forecasted for the day. Apparently, Bindi's luscious locks caused some overheating, so her doctor made a bold recommendation.

"Our vet suggested we get our senior dog shaved — we had never thought it was a good idea," the onscreen text explained.

The video cut to Bindi sans her flowing fur, with an eye-catching new look. The closely cropped canine was completely shaved down and was loving her liberating lack of hair.

"She's a Poodle/lion/pony!" the text shared, noting Bindi's resemblance to several different animals. "And now she's acting like a puppy again!"

Bindi Had a 'Comfort Groom'

The gorgeous Golden literally looked light on her feet and embraced the no-nonsense hairstyle. She played with her toys while wagging her tail, obviously feeling fashionable and free from the weight of her coat.

Remember, dogs express how they feel and show signs of their affection in a ways that aren’t always easy to recognize that often show up in quiet, everyday habits. Here are a few trainers say you can watch for.

They Give You a Soft Gaze

You may have heard warnings to never make eye contact with a dog, but this isn’t universally seen as threatening by dogs. “Contrary to popular belief, dogs make eye contact for lots of reasons that have nothing to do with threat or warning,” Farah says. “A dog who makes soft, relaxed eye contact with you is likely comfortable and thinks you’re worthy of their attention.”

In fact, gentle eye contact is a sign of trust and how dogs show affection. When they gaze into their owner’s eyes, oxytocin, the same hormone that bonds mothers and infants, surges within dogs and humans. 

They Check In With You On Walks

Your dog has its own thing going on—especially on walks— but a pooch will often check in on its pet parent when it looks up to you. “A dog who frequently ‘checks in’ or looks over at you to see what you’re doing is trying to make sure you stay close or looking to you to see what they should do next,” Farah says. She calls these flattering signs that your dog thinks your attention is rewarding and they look up to you more an you know.

They Show Their Belly

One way you can tell if your dog loves you and values you is if they show you their belly. "This is a vulnerable gesture and a huge sign of trust,” according to Alexandra Bassett, lead dog trainer at Dog Savvy. “A dog's belly protects their vital organs, so for them to lie there with their underside exposed is a sign they feel truly safe in your presence and see you as part of their family or ‘pack,’” she says. This is basically your dog’s way of saying that they know you won’t hurt them and directed towards people dogs literally adore.

They Use You As a Resting Post

Your dog isn’t leaning against you because they’re lazy, but rather its a sign of emotional reassurance. “A body lean is basically a dog hug,” Farah says. “It says that they like you, they find you safe and comforting, or they trust that you’ll scratch that itchy spot on their back for them.”

So, if your pup leans on you, it's their way of communicating that they feel good about you and a sign of your dog’s affection toward you.

They Morph Into a Bodyguard

Feel like you always have a small shadow following you around? That’s a good thing when you're a pet parent, according to Shannon Walker, dog trainer and founder of Northwest Battle Buddies. She reveals that it means your pup is curious about what you’re up to and also wants to make sure you’re OK. By doing this, it shows how much they think about you and admire you.

They Listen to You

Training is important, of course, but a dog who looks up to you is often a better listener than one who doesn’t respect their owner. “Reacting to a call from you” is a solid sign of loyalty and respect from a dog," Walker says. Of course, it’s a stretch to say that your dog isn't devoted to you if they don’t come when you call every single time—especially if you’re someplace busy, like at the dog park. But dogs that are generally good listeners typically respect their pet parent.

They Have a Relaxed Posture

Body language is crucial with dogs, Bassett says. “A happy, relaxed dog will have loose, wiggly movements, while a nervous or uncertain dog may freeze, avert their gaze, or tuck their tail,” she says. If your dog looks up to you, they’re more likely to be able to relax in your presence and know that you’ve got their back.

While many people assume older cats spend all day napping, and to be fair, they do appreciate a quality nap, senior cats can still enjoy playtime and companionship. Mental stimulation and gentle interaction help keep aging cats active and engaged, and some older kitties even take on mentor roles with younger pets.

Of course, every cat is different, and introductions should always happen gradually. But when personalities click, friendships between senior cats and younger animals can provide enrichment for both pets.

Completely content, Remi begins her mornings by lounging in the yard and listening to all of the birds around her. The moment is really lovely, and comments on the video concurred calling Remi "so sweet" and (rightfully) a "cutie patootie."

Why Dogs Are Fascinated By Birds

The main reason dogs are so interested in birds (and other small creatures) is purely instinctual. Because of their prey drive as canines and being predators, the way birds behave triggers a dog's hunting and chase drives. Dogs have a built in desire to hunt—especially retrievers—and so seeing birds sets off that instinct in them.

Seeing birds, especially with their erratic movements, releases dopamine in a dog's brain and gets them excited. Chasing things is fun for dogs; so it's understandable that the idea of that would get them going. This boils down to primal genetics, it's something biological within them. However if a dog's reactivity to birds is getting out of hand, it can be managed with proper training.

Regardless of how a dog is with birds, sweet Remi is a great reminder of what's really important in life. Enjoying the little things, the everyday moments, and finding the joy within them.
