The hardest part is that not every protective breed is suited for apartments or busy neighborhoods. “Noise can play a factor when choosing a dog to have in the city,” says Chyrle Bonk, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance, noting that pups that are overly sensitive to noise won’t be comfortable. “City dogs also need to be comfortable meeting or seeing a lot of people and animals as they are out and about,” she points out.

These large dogs are also great protectors for women and men as they can be imposing to strangers, according to Bonk. Originally bred as sheepdogs, they are known for their watchdog tendencies. “These are active dogs, but they can be lazy when indoors,” Bonk shares. “Because of that, they are perfectly happy to lounge around your city apartment, but then will run enthusiastically when brought to a park.”

These pup also have a weatherproof coat that makes them comfortable taking city walks in nearly any weather, so they can be by your side. Besides that, they are smart and devoted as well. “They are loyal and protective,” Bonk states.

Overall, while the Bouvier can alert you to danger and look out for you, they are also affectionate with their pet parents and make great companions.

You can count on this small guard dog to be on high alert for signs of danger and will let you know if something feels off.

"The best city-friendly guard dog is not usually the most intimidating dog, Warner notes. "It is the most stable one." So, while you shouldn't expect your Boston to scare people away, it will still let you know if something seems unusual. While Boston Terriers need regular exercise, they don't require a ton of space, making them excellent city pets.

But while they have a reputation for being aggressive, that’s not the case with a well-trained Doberman. And while they aren't super small dogs, they do well in compact home. “Their size can make them more manageable in apartments or smaller homes, but keep in mind they are still strong, energetic dogs who need proper exercise, play and boundaries,” Warner says.

As with most breeds, Staffordshire Bull Terriers need lots of training and socialization to be a good city dog. If you can do that, you’ll have a wonderful guard dog that’s also highly affectionate. "Many Staffies are confident, affectionate companions,” Warner shares.

Though this is a loyal and fun-loving breed, too, giving you plenty of opportunities for making memories when their guard-dog duties are done for the day.

According to Dr. Joy Myers, a veterinarian at Vetster, “After nearly three decades in veterinary medicine, I can tell you that inappropriate elimination is usually a medical symptom, not a personality problem.”

Dr. Myers says that cats are known for being tidy animals, so if one suddenly stops using their litter box, it means something has changed. "Sometimes that change is medical, sometimes it's environmental and often it's a combination of both," she says.

Beyond medical causes, a negative association with the location of the litter box could also be contributing to accidents outside of it.

The Medical Red Flags

One of the most important concerns when a cat suddenly stops using the litter box is the possibility of an underlying medical issue. While a vet visit is the surest way to find out, there are a few red flags cat parents can watch for at home. 

“One thing I always tell cat owners is that I don't assume a litter box problem is behavioral until we've ruled out medical explanations,” Dr. Myers says. “Cats are masters at hiding pain, and what looks like 'bad behavior' may actually be an attempt to avoid pain or the result of something that’s not working correctly.”

A range of medical conditions could account for your cat's sudden change in behavior, including:

• Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD)
• Feline idiopathic cystitis (a common cause of FLUTD)
• Urinary tract infections
• Bladder stones
• Arthritis and mobility problems
• Kidney disease
• Diabetes
• Hyperthyroidism
• Constipation
• Pain

Dr. Myers also notes that if your cat is repeatedly entering the litter box, producing only small amounts of urine, crying out or is unable to urinate at all, treat it as an emergency. In male cats especially these symptoms may develop into life-threatening urinary blockages that require immediate care.

“This [a cat’s sudden litter box switch] is usually a sign that something has changed and your cat is stressed about it,” says Susan Nilson, owner and founder of The Cat and Dog House, an online educational authority site geared toward helping cat and dog owners better understand their pet's behavior. “It could be something obvious like a house move, a new baby, house guests or a new pet, but it could also be something more subtle, like a different litter brand, a moved box, a new cat in the neighborhood or a new cleaning product with a smell your cat finds off-putting.”

Like many people, cats are creatures of habit, and sudden lifestyle changes can feel like a threat. Don't be alarmed if a new baby or a move prompts temporary litter box changes—most cats will settle back into their routine once they feel comfortable again.

Litter Box Aversion: Did Your Setup Suddenly Become Unacceptable?

The 3-Step Fix

As Dr. Myers points out, three general broad principles can help guide cat parents to a solution.

The first step is to rule out the possibility of any medical problems. As cats tend to hide their pain, this step will require a bit of sleuthing and a watchful eye from you to see if any other changes accompany your feline friend’s sudden litter box avoidance.

2. Make the Most of the Litter Box

The second step is optimizing their litter box environment. This may mean swapping out boxes, adding additional ones, changing litter types or brands, cleaning the litter box more frequently, improving accessibility, or reducing competition between cats in multi-pet households.

3. Correct Any Stressors and Create a Calming Environment

The final step is addressing any clear stressors and creating a calmer space for your cat. Predictable routines, additional resources, pheromone therapy, gradual introductions to new babies or pets, and environmental enrichment are all potential ways to help reduce stress-related accidents.

Why Rubbing Their Nose in It Will Completely Destroy Your Bond

It may be tempting to scold your cat after a litter box accident, but rubbing their nose in it is never the answer.

“Rubbing a cat's nose in an accident is ineffective, unnecessary and genuinely unkind,” Nilson says. “Animals don't make the connection between a past act and a current punishment. If you didn't gently interrupt your cat in the moment, they have no idea what the problem is, which means you're simply frightening an animal who has no idea why. Even in the moment, they're far more likely to read it as an unprovoked attack than any kind of lesson.”

Nilson adds that repeated punishment can erode the bond and trust between cat and owner over time, leading to even more stress and anxiety—and likely more accidents. A kinder, gentler approach is far more likely to yield results.

Though cats are skilled at hiding their discomfort, sudden changes in litter box behavior can offer you a clearer window into what's troubling them. Accidents will happen, but getting to the root cause is always the best way to prevent further issues down the line.

Six different ways of saying the exact same thing. The vet is wrong. Echo is perfect. The conversation is over.

The internet has ruled. Echo has declined. The matter is absolutely closed.

Except the vet might actually have a point.

What's Actually a Healthy Weight for a Golden Retriever—and How to Get There

Here is some information Echo did not ask for.

According to Pawlicy Advisor, a fully grown male golden should weigh somewhere between 65 and 75 pounds by the official breed standards. Females weigh in a little lighter at 55 to 65 pounds. Most golden retrievers hit their full adult weight around age two.

Here is the part that explains a lot though. Pawlicy Advisor points out that goldens are more likely to pack on extra weight than a lot of other breeds and that "their long coats can easily disguise weight gain." The fur is absolutely hiding things. The vet saw right through it.

Healthcare for Pets Hospital backs this up. Extra weight in golden retrievers is a real health concern, not just a cosmetic one. It can cause or make joint problems, back pain and heart disease worse. For a dog who is built to run, swim and fetch all day, carrying extra weight actually matters quite a bit.

The good news is that a solid diet and regular exercise make a big difference for goldens. One of the easiest ways to keep tabs on their weight is just running your hands along their sides when you pet them. The coat tends to hide what the scale would actually show, so a hands-on check tells you a lot more than a quick glance.

For the record, one commenter clocks Echo at 47 kilograms which roughly translates into 103.6 pounds. Echo really is a big boy. Official male golden standards sit between 65 and 75 pounds. His coat may be doing more convincing than his actual weight and the vet may have been fully deceived by the fluff.

Echo has been trying to tell everyone this all along.

He respectfully declines and has nothing further to add.

The TikTok from @oldsoulsanimalres told Iago's story and the trauma he suffered while he was homeless.

"A few weeks ago, he was hit by a car and in emergency ICU at the shelter," the on-screen text explained, as Iago sweetly stared into the camera.

The precious pooch was a bit overwhelmed when he first arrived at Old Souls after his ICU stay, yet he sought out comfort from staff members and other fur babies.

Iago Got a Warm Welcome

Several clips featured Iago exploring the rescue and finding new ways to get around as calm voices gave him guidance. The canine cutie was also surrounded by other four-legged friends (including a "chaotic kitten") who immediately made him feel at home. Iago is surrounded by the love and affection he deserves and getting a second chance at happiness.

"He may not be able to see the world, but we hope he can now feel the love in it," the on-screen text concluded, adding, "Welcome home, Iago."

Why Are Sealyham Terriers So Rare?

So why are Sealyham Terriers considered so rare that they actually almost went extinct?

This special breed has a very interesting history.

Unlike many newer rare dog breeds, these dogs have been recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) since 1911!

They were originally bred in Wales by John Tucker-Edwardes of Pembrokeshire.

Sealyham Terriers are most likely a hybrid of the Wire Fox Terrier, the West Highland White Terrier, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, and the now-extinct English White Terrier.

The dog breed actually became quite popular after World War I and was a favorite among the Hollywood elite.

Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, writer Agatha Christie, and Alfred Hitchcock were all Sealyham Terrier parents.

Hitchcock loved his two Sealyham Terriers so much that he had them make a cameo in his iconic film The Birds, along with him. Frankly, that film could have used more sweet dogs!

One of Hitchcock's Sealyhams also appeared in his film Suspicion.

According to AKC, they are also show-dog champions, winning four Best in Show titles at Westminster as well as one at Crufts and most recently at the 2023 AKC National Dog Show.

That's why it's so shocking that they were considered one of the most endangered dog breeds in the early aughts.

As recently as 2011, only 49 Sealyham Terrier puppies were registered with the AKC, which placed them firmly on the endangered breed list.

It's hard to find official numbers for these dogs, but as of 2016, there were only 500 registered in the U.S.

That's why it's so great to see little Rosie, a happy Sealyham Terrier puppy, living her best life!

Are Singleton Puppies Common for Chihuahuas?

Chihuahuas are small dogs, and small dogs usually have smaller litters than larger ones. There's only so much space for those babies to grow!

Chihuahuas usually have anywhere from 1-3 puppies per litter, though 2 is about average. Single puppies can and do happen for Chihuahuas, especially if:

• They're a smaller dog.
• This is their first time being pregnant.
• They're younger.

Black Diamond Maine Coons has some of the most impressive cats ever, and though they're not all dark like this cat and (most of) her kittens, most of them are a little smoky. This bunch just happens to have a lot of that going on!

In the TikTok from @peggyadamsarl, Panda was in his kennel and stared into the camera with his sweet eyes. The post explained why he was brought to the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.

"Panda landed in the shelter because he was too affectionate," the caption shared, adding details on how the precious pooch shows unconditional love.

The Dangerous Summer Habit You Need to Stop

If you're a pup parent, the dangerous summer habit you need to stop ASAP is walking when it's too hot outside or when the UV index is too high.

"The most common mistake people make walking in the summer with their dogs is walking in weather that is too hot or sun that is too strong," Dr. Zoul says. "Check the weather app for a UV index check, and try to walk when it is under 5."

The Pavement Problem: Why Your Midday Stroll Is a Mistake

A midday walk sounds great in theory, but during the summertime it can be dangerous for your pup.

"Another mistake owners make is letting their dog walk on hot pavement. Again, pavement temperatures will be highest during the hottest parts of the day, so the best thing you can do is walk in cooler temperatures," Dr. Zoul says.

Why Vets Beg You to Skip the Afternoon Walk

The afternoon is when temperatures tend to be the highest, which means the pavement is super hot during this time as well. This is why vets are begging you to skip the afternoon walk and reschedule your walks for other times of day.

Dr. Zoul says the best times of day to walk your dog during the summer are early morning when the sun hasn’t fully risen and the air isn’t too hot yet and late evening.

The Science of Hot Asphalt: What Happens to Paw Pads

"Even if it doesn’t seem that hot out (75, 80 degrees), a strong sun can get asphalt temperatures up past 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to cause a burn to your dog’s paw pads," Dr. Zoul says. "Within just a few minutes, your dog’s paws can blister and become painful with first- or second-degree burns."

She says that if you absolutely cannot avoid hot pavement or sidewalks, you should get your dog walking booties and try walking on grass or dirt to help decrease the odds of hurt, burnt paws.

Why Dogs Process Heat Differently Than Humans

As it turns out, dogs process heat differently than we humans do, which is why you need to take special considerations for your four-legged BFF when it comes to summertime strolls. "Dogs can sweat, but not in the way that we do," Dr. Zoul says. "Their sweat glands work differently and rarely help with heat distribution. Rather, they help with scent. Their primary method of cooling off is panting via evaporation."

Combine this with the fact that dogs also have fur and other bodily mechanisms that contribute to higher temperature retention, and your dog definitely will get hotter faster than you do.

"They also undergo vasodilation, especially in their feet, when their blood vessels dilate and bring warm blood closer to the surface to be passed off into the environment and off the dog," Dr. Zoul says. "This can cause the paws to hold onto even more heat if they don’t have a cooler surface to pass the heat off to. Don’t forget they also have fur (some have thicker coats than others), and this can certainly trap heat in extreme temperatures."

The Early Signs of Heatstroke in Dogs

"Heatstroke in dogs is a severe, sometimes life-threatening emergency, and it of course happens more in the summertime," Dr. Zoul says.

Signs of heatstroke in your dog to look out for may include:

• Heavy panting
• Lethargy
• Dark pink to red gums
• Thick drool
• Seeming hot to the touch

How to Safely Schedule Your Dog's Summer Walks

Before you worry, there are still ways to take walks during the summer and keep your dog safe. One of the best methods is to schedule your doggo's walks during the cooler parts of the day.

"The best time to walk your dog in the summer is when it's the coolest out. This usually looks like early mornings and late evenings," Dr. Zoul says. "This is especially important for brachycephalic (flat- or squish-faced dog) breeds like bulldogs, Boston terriers, etc. Dogs who are overweight or have underlying respiratory conditions should also be prioritized for walking in the coolest weather."

Small adjustments to your daily schedule can help make safer walks possible. "Consider waking up 30 minutes earlier to fit a walk in before work, or having dinner earlier so you have time for an after-dinner walk," Dr. Zoul says.

Other considerations for scheduling your dog's walks include trying new routes that have more shade so you can take shelter from the hot sun as needed.

What to Pack for Your Pup

The most important thing to remember to pack for your dog on your summertime walks is water. "If you're going on a long walk in the summer, regardless of the time of day, bring a portable water bowl and water supply. You can find plenty of options for these online. Most are lightweight, making them easy to carry with you on your walk," Dr. Zoul says.

In addition to water and a bowl, you can bring other items that help keep your dog more comfortable in the summer heat, such as a portable fan, a stroller with a hood if you have a smaller dog or even a pet cooling mat.

"Inside play can be a great alternative for keeping activity levels up during the hot summer days. Consider getting some new toys to inspire interest in playing. Even the habits you never would’ve thought of could be the exact reason why your cat is stressed. 

“Some of the most common sources of stress are things owners don’t think twice about,” Dr. Nathaniel Rakestraw, a veterinarian at TelaVets.com, says.

Dr. Rakestraw says the following common household changes may actually stress cats out and disrupt their sense of security:

• Loud home renovations
• Changes in work schedules

"Cats are creatures of habit, and sudden changes to their routine can be surprisingly unsettling,” Dr. Rakestraw says.

Dr. Rakestraw suggests looking out for increased hiding, changes in appetite, excessive grooming, hair loss from overgrooming, lack of interest in playtime, changes in sleeping, avoiding the litter box and becoming less social as signs that your cat might not be feeling well. They may also start becoming even more clingy or isolate entirely from the family. 

It's also worth noting that these changes rarely happen overnight. Stress in cats tends to build gradually over time, which is why the signs can be so easy to miss until they've already taken hold.

Simple Swaps for a Stress-Free Cat Home

Although it might seem daunting to know that your cat feels stressed in their home, there are plenty of simple swaps that may be beneficial for cats. 

“Providing multiple litter boxes, creating elevated resting spaces, offering hiding areas, maintaining consistent feeding routines, and allowing cats opportunities for play and mental enrichment can make a significant difference,” Dr. Rakestraw says. “In multi-cat homes, ensuring that resources are distributed throughout the house can help reduce tension and competition.” 

A stressed cat doesn't mean a broken bond; it simply means your feline friend needs a little extra reassurance and a few thoughtful adjustments to feel safe and settled again. Recognizing the signs your cat is stressed, knowing what common household things may be stressing them and making small changes to your home can go a long way toward giving your cat the stable, secure environment they need to truly thrive.

After a long day of playtime with your dog, it’s always rewarding to see them finally settle in and drift off to sleep. But before you turn in for the night, you might want to take a closer look at how your furry companion is sleeping. Sleeping on their back with their belly fully exposed is one of the clearest indicators of trust in a dog.

“The most direct way to all a dog’s most important soft and squishy parts is through that exposed tummy, so feeling comfortable sleeping that way in your presence is essentially a vote of confidence,” reveals Amanda Farah, CPDT-K, national training and behavior coordinator at Best Friends Animal Society. “They’ve assessed you and the environment, decided there's no threat, and feel secure enough to be completely defenseless.”

Farah calls this position “the canine equivalent of leaving the front door unlocked.”

Why Dogs Only Sleep This Way Around Certain People

You won’t see dogs sleeping like this in every environment—or around every person.

“In a kennel environment, when we see dogs sleeping tummy-up, someone usually takes a photo,” says Farah. “That’s because it’s so rare to see a dog in that position when they’re feeling stressed or afraid, so it’s proof that something is going right for that dog.”

In other words, this posture tends to appear when a dog feels comfortable enough to fully let their guard down.

What Owners Often Misread About This Sleep Behavior

A belly-up sleeping position can look unusual, which leads some owners to assume it always means something negative or that the dog is in a vulnerable or unstable state.

In reality, the position often looks more extreme than it actually is. While it does involve exposure, it does not automatically signal stress or concern. Instead, it is most commonly seen when a dog feels relaxed in their environment and doesn’t feel the need to stay guarded while resting.

Context still matters, but this posture is generally associated with ease and familiarity at home. It's baically a sign of a happy dog.

How can you know if your dog feels safe at home? Well, different sleeping positions can reveal more about a dog’s physical comfort than most owners realize.

“A dog that sleeps curled tightly into a ball is conserving body heat and protecting their most vulnerable parts,” explains Farah.

This curled posture helps dogs stay warm and physically supported while they rest, especially in cooler or unfamiliar environments.

However, when dogs stretch out or sleep in more open positions, it often reflects physical ease and temperature regulation as a sprawled out sleeping positions are often linked to relaxation and physical comfort. "This sleeping positon means they're letting go of that tight, protective posture because their body doesn’t need to conserve heat or stay guarded,” Farah points out.

How Dogs Choose Their “Safe Spot” for Sleep

A dog’s chosen sleeping spot is rarely random, it’s based on comfort, familiarity, and awareness of their surroundings. These can include familiar scents, preferred temperatures, soft surfaces, or positions that offer awareness of the room, such as a wall behind them or a clear view of an entrance, Farah explains.

“The deciding factor is almost always proximity to their favorite person, though,” she says. “Many dogs will choose a little physical discomfort to be close to their person.”

In many cases, that closeness matters more than anything else.

What Trainers Want Owners to Understand About Dog Sleep Habits

Consistency plays an important role in a dog’s overall well-being, according to Farah.

“Sleep hygiene is important,” she says. “Predictable sleep routines reduce anxiety, and dogs who sleep better are healthier and more relaxed.”

When it comes to where a dog sleeps, Farah notes it’s ultimately a personal choice for each household. “Research does not support the old belief that allowing dogs to sleep in your bed creates behavior issues,” she adds.

Overall, the key is ensuring dogs can settle comfortably and independently when needed. And when that comfort shows up as a belly-up nap, it often reflects a dog who feels completely at ease.

When we think of cats with chipmunks (or with any outdoor critters, really), we usually don't think of it ending well. That's why a lot of cats aren't allowed outside: letting a cat outside unsupervised can be bad for the natural ecosystem.

Fay-Lynn lucked out having a cat who was so willing to take in an animal she'd never seen before. A lot of cats wouldn't be so kind! How this chipmunk came to be in the kitty's care is unclear, but one thing is clear as can be: she really loves him.

A cat's maternal instincts are biological and hormonal. Kittens are born completely helpless, and their mothers know they need to move them to a safe place and feed them in order to keep them alive. However, cats will often "team up" and take care of kittens who aren't even theirs.

A cat may be inclined to raise a baby who isn't hers, even if they're not the same species, if:

• It's obviously in need of her help.
• Not necessary, but if she's just had a litter of kittens, she's more likely to accept another baby.
