New York Times Books Calls This New Novel 'The Big Chill' Meets 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' — and a Must-Read This Week

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 7:17am

When we’re not getting book recommendations from our favorite celebrity book clubs like Oprah’s Book Club or Reese’s Book Club, we’re heading straight to the New York Times. Being deemed a New York Times bestseller is the ultimate literary stamp of approval, but getting a mere mention from the Times is a ringing endorsement from one of the most trusted sources in the book world.

In one of the Times’ most recent book roundups, six new books get a special shoutout as must-reads chosen by Times editors. All intriguing picks, the description “Four Weddings and a Funeral meets The Big Chill” piqued our interest. Could there be a better mashup of favorite storylines, all in one book? According to the New York Times, there is not.

A New Novel Making Waves View this post on Instagram

So Old, So Young by Grant Ginderwas released on February 17, 2026. One of the most anticipated books of the year, the novel is structured around five significant parties, beginning with a New Year’s Eve celebration shortly after college, and follows six college friends over two decades as they navigate love, career, friendship, heartbreak, and the realities of growing older.

What the New York Times Said

The Times editors write:

“Think of this as The Big Chill” meets Four Weddings and a Funeral” for the millennial set. The book drops in on several pivotal events — a New Year’s Eve party, a destination wedding, a messy weekend in the Hamptons — over two decades in the shared life of a college friend group whose flair for drama appears undiminished by the approach of middle age.”

The “worst thing” about So Old, So Young, according to the New York Times, is that the book seems “Netflix-ready.” Fitting, considering Ginder’s 2017 novel The People We Hate at the Wedding did become a movie in 2022, the criticism hardly seems like a criticism at all.

Grant Ginder’s Previous Books

Ginder is the author of five other novels. In addition to So Old, So Young and The People We Hate at the Wedding, the University of Pennsylvania alum also wrote Let’s Not Do That Again (2022), Honestly, We Meant Well (2019), Driver’s Education (2013), and This Is How It Starts (2009).

Early Praise and Accolades

So Old, So Young is already receiving accolades in addition to the New York Times endorsement. Ginder’s novel was selected as a February Book Club pick by Good Housekeeping and has scored high marks from other acclaimed writers, including Elin Hilderbrand, Pineapple Street writer Jenny Jackson, Blue Sisters author Coco Mellors, Margo’s Got Money Troubles writer Rufi Thorpe, In Five Years author Rebecca Serle, and Xochitl Gonzalez, the New York Times bestselling author of Olga Dies Dreaming.

In just a few short weeks since its publication date, So Old, So Young has already received accolades from some of the book world’s most acclaimed current writers, as well as a rousing endorsement from New York Times Books. This poignant, sharp novel taps into themes of friendship, modern adulthood, and the passage of time, suggesting that Ginder has, in fact, penned this generation’s Big Chill. A must-read, indeed.

Before Miley Cyrus, Disney Had Someone Else Picked to Play 'Hannah Montana'

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 7:11am

Twenty years ago, Disney Channel handed Aly Michalka one of the biggest roles in the network's history. She said no.

As Phil of the Future wrapped its second and final season, the head of Disney Channel came to Michalka with a new project. In a February 2026 appearance on the Just Trish podcast, she confirmed what few fans knew: she was offered the lead role in Hannah Montana.

'I know it was very soon after Phil wrapped and they were looking for the next shows,' Michalka said. 'I think at that point I was almost 16 and a half, maybe 17. Definitely older, I think, than Miley was probably at that time.'

Michalka had been building a music career as Aly and the show's premise created an identity problem she couldn't get past. 'I'm like three, four different people,' she said. She noted the layers: herself as Aly Michalka, the band Aly & AJ, the show's lead character, and Hannah Montana on top of that. 'I don't know if I want to do this,' she remembers thinking.

Her sister AJ put it plainly on the same episode: 'I think also Aly was like, 'How am I going to get away with being Aly and AJ and Hannah Montana and Aly Michalka in the show?'

When Aly showed reluctance, Disney didn't back off. AJ recalled that the network sweetened the offer. AJ would be added to the cast as Lilly Truscott, the best friend role that ultimately went to Emily Osment. 'After Aly kind of showed that it wasn't necessarily the route she wanted to take, that was how they kind of sweetened the deal,' AJ said. AJ confirmed the the offer. 'The head of Disney Channel definitely wanted Aly to do it. I would say they pushed for that.'

The sisters passed. Michalka's reasoning, in the end, was simple. 'I just felt like it didn't make sense,' she said. 'I think it was all meant to be the way it is. You look at people that were originally supposed to be cast in something and then it goes to someone else and you're like, 'Wow, that's so weird.' But that was supposed to be that way.'

She has no regrets. At the time, she felt she had gotten what she came for at the network. 'I just didn't feel like I needed to spend more time at the channel at that point,' she said.

Miley Cyrus ultimately got the part and the rest is Disney history. The show's 20th anniversary special premieres on Disney+ on March 24.

A New "Gravity-Defying" Coaster Is Coming to Myrtle Beach—and It’s Breaking Records

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 7:10am

For roller coaster enthusiasts, Myrtle Beach is about to become a major blip on the radar for something other than its famous boardwalk. Family Kingdom Amusement Park just dropped a fresh wave of details about its highly anticipated 2026 addition, and it’s shaping up to be a total game-changer for the South Carolina coast.

While the park has been home to the historic Swamp Fox wooden coaster for decades, the new attraction—a custom "Raptor" model from the legendary builders at Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC)—is bringing cutting-edge thrills to the seaside. If you aren't a "coaster nerd," here is why this matters: these single-rail coasters are famous for being incredibly smooth, fast and remarkably intense because you sit straddling a single thin rail of steel.

Though the park is playing it cool with the official name—hinting only that "we’re near the ocean, use your imagination"—the specs are anything but quiet. Standing 100 feet tall, the new ride will tower nearly 30 feet over the Swamp Fox. It’s designed to hit speeds of 52 mph and features three inversions, meaning you’ll be flipping upside down right over the Myrtle Beach skyline.

Related: Six Flags Reveals New Record-Breaking 'Mystery Coaster' Officially Under Construction

Perhaps the most exciting part for airtime junkies is that this layout includes five unique "airtime" moments—those stomach-flipping seconds where you lift out of your seat. At 1,920 feet long, it’s actually a bit beefier than the original versions of this ride found at major theme parks in California and Texas, proving that this "small" seaside park is swinging for the fences.

Construction is moving fast, too. The first of 28 track deliveries is scheduled to arrive this week, though you'll need to be patient for the payoff. The park is currently eyeing a "Late Summer 2026" debut, so think closer to a Labor Day celebration than a Memorial Day kickoff.

Whether you’re a local or planning your 2026 summer vacation, this adds a serious punch of adrenaline to the classic Myrtle Beach itinerary. It’s a "big thrill" experience in a charming, nostalgic setting—the perfect excuse to grab some saltwater taffy and then go upside down at 50 miles per hour.

Influencer Lee ‘Malibu’ Markham Backed by Public Figures Following IED Apology

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 7:00am

Lee “Malibu” Markham’s apology is now being met with support from several high-profile names.

Just days after the fitness influencer admitted he falsely claimed to be an “IED Survivor,” several celebs and online personalities have stepped into his Instagram comments to encourage him following the backlash.

Markham, who built a large following under the handle @malibufitmaxx, went viral earlier this year on Instagram for his fitness content, gaining over a million followers in just a month. As scrutiny over his appearance intensified, a narrative circulated that his facial features were the result of injuries sustained in combat. But on Friday February 27, Markham acknowledged that claim was untrue.

“I wanted to talk to you directly about the claim that I made, taking an IED blast to the face,” he said in a video statement shared to Instagram. He emphasized that he did serve “between 2005 and 2010” and expressed pride in that chapter of his life, while admitting he fabricated the injury. “Instead of facing that right away, I made a bad decision and put ‘IED Survivor’ in my bio. That was not true and it was wrong,” he said. “Truly I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart.”

Since then, several recognizable figures have voiced support. Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix commented, “Honesty is the best policy. You owned it! Good on ya. Now get back to being that positive dude that you are. 🙌”

Filmmaker Cole Walliser left a string of supportive emojis, while entrepreneur Tai Lopez wrote, “we all make mistakes. keep going amigo.”

Other influencers in the fitness scene left messages as well.

User @chestbrah.official wrote: “Apologised like a man and didnt make excuses or keep lying - still a legend in my eyes.”

Snowboarder and content creator David Muther said, “I think I respect you more now. 🙌 Here for the journey and the vibe !”

Popular husband and wife creators Ryan and Jen Hamilton wrote, “I also served the army 07-10 and went to Iraq in 2008 for a 15 month tour. I’m not mad at you at all. People have no idea what it’s like to be an influencer and constantly attacked on your image. You live and you learn. Much love homie! Hooah”

While not all commenters were convinced, Markham made it clear what he hopes people take from the video: “I take full responsibility for it,” he said, adding, “Trust is earned. It’s not owed.”

Luke Grimes Reacts to Monica’s Shocking Death in ‘Marshals’ — And That John Dutton Callback (Exclusive)

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 7:00am

Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is back and he’s stepping into a new chapter that’s bigger, more dangerous and more complicated than ever.

The premiere episode of Marshals, titled “Piya Wiconi” (New Beginning), wastes no time throwing its hero into turmoil, balancing high-stakes action with major character developments. As Kayce struggles to keep East Camp running and rein in his headstrong teenage son Tate (Brecken Merrill), it becomes clear that even with allies like Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty), in his corner, the weight of responsibility is becoming too much for one man to carry.

That pressure collides with a new mission when Kayce reconnects with a former SEAL teammate (Logan Marshall-Green) and joins a U.S. Marshal unit tracking a bomber targeting a protest at the Broken Rock Reservation. The investigation leads to an intense shootout, one that hints at a much larger conspiracy. And as if that weren’t enough, the episode also confirms the death of a major Yellowstone character that reshapes the stakes moving forward.

Luke Grimes spoke exclusively with Parade about the premiere, from the show's unique identity to that powerful John Dutton (Kevin Costner) callback and how the pilot quietly sets up a much larger story.

The first episode confirms Monica’s (Kelsey Asbille) death and hints at what may have caused it. How much of her story still shapes your character moving forward, even if we don’t see it on screen?
The whole thing with Kayce and Monica, it's like Romeo and Juliet, star-crossed lovers sort of thing. And even if she's not around physically, clearly she's still very much around. I mean, my favorite scene in the whole pilot is when he goes and visits her grave and sort of just speaks out into nothing to talk to her. So she's very much a part of the show and very much honored, as people will see, throughout the first season. She gets revisited a lot.

One of my favorite lines in the episode is when you tell Tate, “Your grandfather warned me about this…” and reference John predicting this moment. What was it like playing a scene that directly ties your character back to Kevin Costner’s in such a meaningful way?
Man, it's cool. It's like, who would've thought eight years later I'd be recalling a scene that I did with Costner, where he was telling me about my son, who was nine and is now 18? It's crazy. It's just a testament to how successful the first show was and how much people loved it that I'm still able to play this character. And I've had a son in the meantime since then. I've had my own sort of kid. So those scenes mean a lot more to me now. And I feel like I actually understand them a lot more now.

The show clearly has Yellowstone DNA, but also has its own identity. In your mind, what kind of series is this? It does have a Yellowstone feel, but it also has the procedural element as well. So where does it fit?
I honestly have never seen anything like it, which I think is a great thing. I think it's very original, and I think if you like procedural shows, you will like this show, but you don't have to like procedurals. I think there's something for everybody. And my hope is that yes, the fans of the original Yellowstone show will like this, even though it's very different, but I hope we've done enough justice to the characters where they can continue with us.

The premiere hints that the bombing case may be part of something bigger. How much of the season is driven by that larger mystery?
A very, very good chunk of it. And that's what I mean by this isn't your typical procedural. Every episode isn't self-contained and then they're wrapped up in a nice little bow. There's some twists and some turns and there's definitely things from Episode 1 that are going to play all the way through.

Related: Get a First Look at Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell’s New Taylor Sheridan Series ‘The Madison’ – New Trailer Just Dropped!

What was it like stepping back on set with actors you already have so much history with?
I just felt lucky, man. Lucky to still have this character to play and then to play along with such great guys who've become really close friends. It's like a sort of a family to me now. And of course, I miss a lot of those family members, but the ones that I do get to play alongside, I feel very blessed to be with.

You have some Yellowstone cast members who are going to be on Marshals, it looks like, for quite a while. Are there other cameos that we can expect?
There's definitely people who get brought up a lot, so you're going to hear a lot about some of your favorite characters, but as of right now, there has been no sort of crossover with any of the other characters that are still out there.

1974 Tragedy-Inspired Pop Song Beat a Rival Band to No. 1

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 6:35am

In 1974, a tragedy-inspired pop song beat a rival band to the top spot on the Billboard charts, causing a commotion with its teary story of war and lost love.

In the early part of the ’70s, Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods had a mega-hit with the song "Billy, Don't Be a Hero." The emotional anti-war ballad shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the year’s most talked-about chart-toppers.

The song was written by Mitch Murray and Peter Callender, who also penned the hits "How Do You Do It" and "Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast." According to American Songwriter, the tune was written about a young man fighting in the American Civil War, but as the song was written as the Vietnam War came to a close, the tune resonated with listeners on a more personal level.

The song was first given to the band Paper Lace, who recorded and released the tune in Great Britain. But it was Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods, who also recorded the tune, who hit the top spot on the U.S. charts in June of 1974. Paper Lace would only chart as high as No. 96 reported Sterogum.

Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods took the song, which was meant to convey the message that war oftentimes includes tragic endings, and turned it into a pop classic. Although it seems the hero, Billy, is doomed from the start, the song's storytelling keeps listeners engaged until the climactic ending, when his left-behind fiancée makes a fatal decision about her future.

According to the Billboard Database, the group would chart four times, three of these in 1974. Along with "Billy, Don't Be a Hero," Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods hit No. 65 with "The Heartbreak Kid" and "Who Do You Think You Are" at 89 in '74. "Our Last Song Together" charted at No. 95 in 1975.

“Billy, Don’t Be a Hero” captured the anxious mood of a generation shaped by war. Its dramatic storytelling and soaring chorus cemented its place as one of 1974’s defining chart-toppers.

1976 Hard Rock Rebellion Anthem Was Written in 20 Minutes

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 6:25am

In 1976, The Runaways stormed onto the music scene. Just as the disco craze was beginning to take over, producer Kim Fowley’s curated all-female teen punk band released the hard-rocking rebellion song “Cherry Bomb.”

With lyrics such as “Can't stay at home, can't stay in school” and “Hello world I'm your wild girl,’ “Cherry Bomb” was an anthem for teen defiance and independence. The song hit No. 106 on the Billboard charts on Aug. 7, 1976, and received a boost when it was featured in the TV movie Dawn: Portrait of a Teenage Runaway starring Eve Plumb that fall.

Admittedly, not everyone understood The Runaways. “Back in 1976, people didn’t know what to make of The Runaways,”  guitarist Lita Ford told Guitar World. “They labeled us as teenage jailbait or punk rock. I didn’t care about labels. Just give me my guitar. I just wanted to play.”

A last-minute songwriting session

The Runaways featured Ford, as well as Cherie Currie on vocals, Joan Jett (guitar), Jackie Fox (bass), and Sandy West (drums). But it was “Cherry Bomb” that helped make the band’s original lineup happen.

In an interview shared by WRAL, Jett, who was just 16 when she co-founded The Runaways with Fowley and West, revealed the group’s signature song was written on the spot.

“Cherie Currie showed up to audition, and she had no song to sing. So Kim said, ‘We’re going to write you a song.’ Kim and I went in the other room, and he said, ‘Just start playing me something, play a riff,’” Jett revealed. “I started jamming on the ‘Cherry Bomb’ riff, and he started with the chorus — ‘hello Daddy, hello Mom.’  I’d say 20, 25 minutes, we came back and said, ‘Sing this.’"

“It was great to be in that creative process, happening right there for a specific person. Jett added. “But it was her representing all of us — it wasn’t just necessarily about Cherie. I was trying to represent all girls.”

Currie was grateful for the song

In the 2004 documentary Edgeplay:  A Film About the Runaways, Currie recalled showing up to her Runaways audition ready to perform an ill-suited Suzi Quatro song.

“Out of all the songs on the Your Mama Won’t Like Me album, I pick ‘Fever’ for Christ sakes,”  she said. “I was terrified. I mean, I had sang ‘Fever’ till it was coming out my as--. So Joan walks over, and she goes, ‘So, what song did you learn?’ Of course, I say, ‘Fever.’ She just turns and looks at the girls and says, ‘Fever?’ She picks ‘Fever?’ So, anyway, since no one knew how to play ‘Fever,’ Joan and Kim wrote ‘Cherry Bomb’ on the spot for me to audition to, and that was it. I was in the band.”

Currie elaborated in an interview on theRock Talk With Mitch Lafon podcast in 2019.

"'Cherry Bomb' never would have been written had I picked a different Suzi Quatro song to do my audition with,” she shared. “I picked 'Fever', Suzi Quatro's version, to audition for the Runaways. Of course, the girls were not happy with that. And Kim Fowley … Kim was a songwriter like no one I've ever known.   …And knowing Kim and how he writes — that flowed right out of his mouth, all the lyrics that he came up with for 'Cherry Bomb.’ And he wrote it for me, to audition.”

Currie expressed gratitude for the song that Fowley wrote within minutes of first seeing her that day.

I think had I not walked into the picture, that song never would have been written.  And for that to be the very first song I ever recorded with the band is super cool,” she added. "I was just about to turn 16 when I recorded that song, and I'm just very grateful.  … If I could talk to that girl at 15 years old, that scared girl that was so intimidated and frightened, that, 'Hey, you know what? This is really gonna be okay. You're gonna have a great life.’”

The Runaways went on to release four albums before breaking up in 1979.

Royal Caribbean Just Cut a Popular Perk From Its Most Expensive Drink Packages

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 6:10am

The "all-inclusive" feel of a Royal Caribbean cruise is about to get a little less inclusive for fans of a specific fizzy perk. Starting March 15, 2026, the cruise line is quietly removing a beloved staple from its most popular drink packages: the Coca-Cola souvenir cup.

For years, guests who purchased the Deluxe Beverage Package or the Refreshment Package received one of these specialized cups as a standard inclusion. The cups are more than just a souvenir; they contain a chip that unlocks the fleet’s Coca-Cola Freestyle machines, allowing travelers to mix and match over 100 different drink combinations at self-service stations throughout the ship.

Under the new rules, these machines will now be off-limits to premium package holders unless they pay an additional one-time fee of $4.99 for the cup.

While the change hasn't been formally announced in a press release, eagle-eyed passengers began noticing the missing perk while reviewing their cruise planners for upcoming spring sailings. For those who rely on the convenience of grabbing a quick, custom soda at the Windjammer or Sorrento’s Pizza, this $5 "add-on" is a surprising shift for packages that often cost upwards of $70 per day.

The good news is that you won’t go thirsty. Canned and fountain sodas are still included in both the Deluxe and Refreshment packages; you’ll just have to wait in line at a bar or flag down a server to get them rather than helping yourself at a machine. Interestingly, the Classic Soda Package—the most basic beverage tier—will still include the Freestyle cup as part of its standard offering.

The move has sparked a wave of debate among regular cruisers. Some speculate the change is a way to curb "cup-sharing" among family members, while others suggest it’s an effort to reduce the waste of plastic souvenirs that often end up left behind in staterooms at the end of a voyage.

This tweak is just one of several updates Royal Caribbean is rolling out for 2026. Along with the drink package shuffle, the line is also tightening its banned items list—with new, clearer rules on everything from snacks to smart glasses—and expanding its roster of short 3- and 4-night Caribbean getaways from Fort Lauderdale. Whether you're a "Free-styler" or a fountain-soda purist, it’s clear that planning your 2026 sailing will require a closer look at the fine print.

1975 Classic Was the No. 1 Country Hit 50 Years Ago Today

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 6:00am

Back in the ’70s, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, the iconic rule-breakers who launched the outlaw movement, were redefining country music one twangy hit at a time. Their first major No. 1 to peak on the Billboard charts, and the No. 1 country song on this day 50 years ago, was “Good Hearted Woman.”

The hit duet enjoyed three weeks on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart, beginning Feb. 21, 1976, and became one of the biggest songs off the duo’s Wanted! The Outlaws album, a certified staple of the outlaw country revolution furthered by rebel artists like Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash.

Written by Jennings and Nelson in 1969, and recorded by Jennings alone in 1971, “Good Hearted Woman” was inspired by another music great: Tina Turner. According to The Billboard Book of Number One Country Hits, via American Songwriter, the title track off Jennings’ 1972 studio album was sussed out while the two were hanging in an old motel in Fort Worth, Texas.

“I’d been reading an ad for Ike and Tina Turner,” Jennings said. “And it said, ‘Tina Turner singing songs about good-hearted women loving good-timing men.’ I thought, ‘What a great country song title that is!’”

The two wrote the song over a game of poker with their wives, Connie Nelson and Jessi Colter, serving as further inspiration.

"I think Connie and Jessi both were the object of that song," Nelson added. "Naturally, we started thinking about the ones who were having to put up with us at that particular time."

Jennings’ solo version peaked at No. 3 on the country chart in 1972, while the remixed and re-released duet went all the way to top in 1976 and stayed there for three weeks. The song also crossed over to the Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 25, as well as to the Adult Contemporary chart, peaking at No. 16. The song also won Single of the Year at the 10th annual CMA Awards in 1976.

Following the success of the track, the two recorded an entire duet album, Waylon & Willie, in 1978, with “Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” becoming a staple of “redneck rock.”

In 2002, Jennings passed away at 64 years old. Nelson, now 92, remembered his “blood brother” and outlaw pal with a tribute concert, Outlaw: Celebrating the Music of Waylon Jennings, in 2015.

This month, the two are back together again — in a sense — as their documentary series makes its world debut at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival in Austin, Texas. They Called Us Outlaws - The Cosmic Cowboys, Honky Tonk Heroes and Rise of Redneck Rock debuts March 15 with a 90-minute pilot focused on Jennings and the renowned Armadillo World Headquarters.

Told over 10 episodes, the docuseries is presented in association with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and features archival footage, rare interviews, and more than 120 recording artists, songwriters, and producers. It’s narrated by Texas legend Jack Ingram.

This 1970 Release Was Supposed to Be a New Beginning — but Some Say It ‘Cursed’ the Band

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 5:12am

When Let It Be arrived in 1970, it was meant to signal a fresh start for The Beatles—a stripped-down return to the camaraderie that once defined them. Instead, the sessions exposed deep fractures, with creative clashes and personal resentments spilling into the music, leaving some historians and fans to view the release as the moment the world’s biggest band could no longer hold itself together.

On Sunday, March 1, Far Out Magazine compiled a list of albums that left musicians "cursed," and Let It Be took the No. 1 spot. The album was one of the final projects of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

"It was a disaster," biographer Barry Miles previously wrote, according to the outlet. "Paul bossed George around; George was moody and resentful. John would not even go to the bathroom without Yoko at his side … The tension was palpable."

And many fans would agree that Let It Be was the beginning of the end for The Beatles.

"'Let It Be' is a project that was scarred by the huge shadow of resentment the Beatles had for each other when it finally came out," Giles Martin, son of late Beatles producer Sir George Martin, previously told People magazine. "That's what we remember about it."

And while Let It Be was the last album released by The Beatles, they actually recorded Abbey Road after that. Nevertheless, Let It Be often takes the blame for being the album that ultimately broke up the band in April 1970.

American Airlines Just Changed Its Baggage Rules—and Not Planning Ahead Could Cost You

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 5:10am

If you’re a heavy packer who typically travels with more than one suitcase, your next trip on American Airlines might come with a side of sticker shock—unless you’re willing to do a little digital homework before you head to the airport.

The Fort Worth-based carrier just announced a subtle but significant tweak to its baggage policy, officially raising the price for a second checked bag to $50 for passengers who wait until they reach the terminal to pay.

The $5 hike is specifically designed as a "nudge" to get travelers to use the airline’s updated mobile app and online tools. By prepaying for that second bag online before you leave the house, you can snag a $5 "discount," keeping the fee at the current rate of $45.

View this post on Instagram

While the cost for your first checked bag remains unchanged ($35 if prepaid, $40 at the airport), this new second-bag penalty is American’s latest effort to "streamline" the check-in process and reduce those notoriously long bag-drop lines.

"Any time we can make the travel experience streamlined and more convenient before arriving at the airport is a win for our customers," said American's Chief Customer Officer Heather Garbodenin a statement. This shift follows a similar formula used by top competitor United Airlines and comes at a time when the carrier is looking to rebound after a dip in 2025 profits.

Related: 7 Things American Airlines is Changing That Passengers Will Actually Notice in 2026

The good news? There are still plenty of ways to bypass these fees entirely. If you hold AAdvantage elite status, you still get at least one free checked bag, while Platinum members and higher can check two bags at no cost. Additionally, most American Airlines co-branded credit card holders continue to receive their first checked bag free on domestic flights.

For everyone else, the message is clear: the days of "winging it" at the check-in counter are getting more expensive. To keep those extra dollars in your pocket for souvenirs, make sure you’ve finalized your luggage count on the app well before the TSA line is in sight.

Aldi's Elegant Propagation Vase Set Makes Plant Parenting Look Effortless

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 5:05am

You know those little propagation vases that look almost too pretty to actually do anything? They're almost equal parts science experiment and home decor. At their core, they're incredibly useful because they let you snip a stem from a pothos or even a sprig of rosemary, then pop it in water, and watch roots slowly open. It's low-commitment plant parenting at its finest. No soil mess, just a cutting and a little patience.

But beyond the practicality, propagation vases can just look so elegant. The clear glass lets you see the roots develop, which feels oddly satisfying if you don't care for the unknown of traditional planting (seriously, what's happening in that dirt anyway?). A single stem suspended in water can look sculptural, almost minimalist. It's greenery without the bulk of a full pot.

Kirkton House Propagation Glass Vases, $9.99 at Aldi

Aldi

If you've never tried propagating plants before, Aldi is giving you the perfect excuse to give it a go. Its Kirkton House Propagation Glass Vases come with either a white or wood-toned holder and look positively lovely on a windowsill. For $9.99, you get the holder with five glass vases suspended from a simple rod that stretches across its length.

People use propagation vases because they're functional, sure—they help multiply your plants for free. But they also make everyday plant care feel beautiful. It's a small ritual: trim, place, wait, watch. And the whole situation takes up very little space, which is another added benefit. No trellis needed for vining plants, or outdoor setup required.

Brand-new to propagating? Think of it as the plant equivalent of dipping your toe in gardening. You don't need fancy gear or a greenhouse, just a healthy plant. And speaking of plants, it's best to start out with one that's easy to propagate, like a pothos, philodendron or monstera. They root quickly and are considered pretty forgiving.

Look for a node (it looks like a little bump on the stem where leaves grow), then use clean scissors and cut just below it. That's where new roots should sprout. Place the cutting in the vase so the node is submerged, but any leaves stay above water. You want to change the water weekly to make sure no bacteria forms—that will keep the roots healthy.

Then you just sit back and wait. Be patient, and you'll be richly rewarded with greenery soon enough.

1989 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest of All Time’ Reimagined by Country Star Zach Top

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 5:00am

In August of 1989, country music group Shenandoah released their country classic “Two Dozen Roses.” Although the band has found success with several songs, many would argue that the floral-bouquet-titled hit has taken the crown as their signature song.

Success of the Song

Penned by Mac McAnally and Robert Byrne, “Two Dozen Roses” has been featured on various country music best-of lists, including being ranked at #74 on Billboard’s Greatest of All-Time Top Country Songs list. Appearing on Shenandoah’s second studio album, The Road Not Taken, released that same year, the tune rose to the top of the U.S.Billboard Hot Country Songs and Canada Country Tracks charts, at the time, giving them their third No. 1 hit of their career.

Behind the Lyrics

“Two Dozen Roses” features a steady beat with the lead singer, Marty Raybon, singing about a failed relationship as he ponders what could’ve been had he done things differently.

“If I had two dozen roses / And an older bottle of wine / If I really could've hung the moon / Would it change your mind?” He wonders throughout the chorus of the song.

Over the years, “Two Dozen Roses” has become a timeless staple in country music, so beloved within the genre that it’s been covered numerous times. In 2023, Luke Combs teamed up with the band on a re-released version of the track, while Luke Bryan delivered a live performance rendition of the song at one of his shows. More recently, Zach Top reimagined the country classic.

Zach Top’s Rendition

Top, 28, treated fans to his cover of the heartbreak hit late last month during a show in Copenhagen, Denmark, at K.B. Hallen. “Two Dozen Roses” isn’t new to Top’s setlist, as he’s performed the song at previous concerts. As he has done before, Top wowed fans with his version, even earning praise from Shenandoah, who shared his performance on their Instagram Stories. (Top's rendition can also be viewed in the TikTok clip below).

“Well done,” a caption reads across the clip, which shows Top wearing a black cowboy hat and strumming on an acoustic guitar as he effortlessly belts out the tune’s lyrics.

Top will continue his run of headlining shows overseas through March 15. After that, he will return to the States with a packed schedule of appearances at music festivals across the country. For a full list of tour dates, visit his official website.

1996 Career-Defining Classic Was a No. 1 Hit 30 Years Ago Today

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 5:00am

30 years ago today, on March 2, 1996, Martina McBride soared to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart (now known as the Hot Country Songs chart) with her signature country classic “Wild Angels.”

The uptempo tune, which belongs on the powerhouse singer’s full-length major label studio album of the same name, gave McBride, 59, her first chart-topper, following a string of fan-favorites like “My Baby Loves Me,” “Life No. 9,” “Independence Day,” and “Safe in the Arms of Love.”

The Lyrics

The empowering single, written by Matraca Berg, Gary Harrison, and Harry Stinson, delves into themes of faith and divine protection, reflecting on the comforting belief that guardian angels do exist. Throughout the lyrics, McBride expresses gratitude toward a higher power — one she believes helped guide her and her romantic partner through troubled waters and life’s chaos.

“Must've been wild angels, wild angels / Watching over you and me, yeah / Wild angels, wild angels / Baby, what else could it be?” McBride sings throughout the chorus, showcasing her powerful soprano belt on the lyrics.

"I started it with Harry," Berg said regarding the inspiration behind the song, according toTaste of Country. "I don’t know what we were smoking that day, but it was a very lofty, kind of poetic, lyric. I heard it [recently] and thought, 'What was I thinking?'"

"Gary gave me an epiphany with that song," she added. "Get them a good, kick-a-- chorus, and you can write whatever you want to in the verses."

The Music Video

According to the outlet, McBride’s accompanying video for the song was filmed atop the Clock Tower Building in New York City. Shot in black and white, the music video adds another dimension to the song as the legendary country star and 14-time Grammy nominee mouths out the lyrics, as scenes of people and buildings are shown throughout.

Following the success of “Wild Angels,” McBride later went on to add to her list of accomplishments with hit songs like “A Broken Wing” and “Wrong Again.”

One of the Most Iconic Villains on 'Days of Our Lives' Debuted 34 Years Ago Today

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 5:00am

Thirty-four years ago, Louise Sorel joined the cast of the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives as the fan-favorite villainous Vivian Alamain, making her first appearance on March 2, 1992.

Before joining Days of Our Lives, Sorel had already built a strong daytime resume, appearing as Judith Sanders on One Life to Live and later as Augusta Lockridge on Santa Barbara.

In the lead-up to her debut, NBC promoted the character’s arrival with a teaser featuring Lawrence Alamain, played by Michael Sabatino. The promo described Vivian as the woman who taught Lawerence “everything he knows,” warning viewers that her arrival would change Salem forever.

Sorel made her debut on March 2, 1992, as Lawerence’s aunt, Vivian Alamin. The character debut with a bang, immediately killing off someone confronting her nephew. Vivian quickly became a central antagonist, frequently clashing with Lawerence's love interest Carly Manning, played by Crystal Chappell.

One of Vivian’s most infamous storylines involved her plot against Carly after the arrival of Nicolas Alamain. In a shocking twist, Vivian faked Carly’s death and buried her alive in order to keep her away from Lawerence and their son.

The storyline unfolded over multiple episodes, with Vivian communicating with Carly while she was trapped inside the coffin, intensifying the drama and cementing the story as one of the show’s most memorable arcs.

In later years, the character took on a more comedic tone, becoming a sidekick sharing scenes with Sami Brady, played by Alison Sweeney, and Kristen DiMera, played by Eileen Davidson.

Vivian has returned to Salem multiple times over the years, most recently appearing in February 2026. During this storyline, Vivian was questioned about her possible involvement in the DiMera family kidnappings. With help from Gwen Rizchech, played by Emily O’Brien, Vivian framed Carly Manning's cousin, Dimitri von Leuschner, played by Peter Porte, for the crime. However, later scenes suggest that Vivian may have been involved after all.

Savannah Guthrie's Mom Update: Former FBI Agent Predicts 'Getaway Car' Will Be 'Critical' in Solving the Case

Mon, 03/02/2026 - 4:42am

Nancy Guthrie has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1, and authorities are working diligently to check into leads and review video footage from that night as well as other nights in January 2026.

While not much is known about what exactly happened at Guthrie's home on that fateful night, it is widely presumed that Guthrie was transported away from her home for reasons unbeknownst to the public. Assuming that Guthrie wasn't carried to wherever she may have ended up, it's presumed there was a vehicle (or vehicles) involved in moving her.

Upon nearly the one month mark in the investigation, NewsNation’s Brian Entin sat down with former FBI agent Tracy Walder to discuss the case. During that interview, Walder shared that she believes that the vehicle could be key in finding a suspect.

"I feel a getaway vehicle is gonna be critical in this case," Walder told Entin.

Walder isn't the first person to suggest this, either. In an interview with the Daily Mail, former FBI assistant director Chris Swecker also noted the potential importance of a "getaway car."

"He’s working at his leisure. It’s dark, it’s 1:47 in the morning, and he believes he’s not being observed," Swecker said of the perp seen on Guthrie's front stoop the night she went missing. "That tells me he’s comfortable, and that raises the possibility someone else is nearby, maybe sitting in a car."

"To me, the car is the key to this," he continued, adding, "it’s one thing to go into the house. It’s another thing to move her. Finding that car will be critical."

Investigators are said to be reviewing hours of video footage and have seized three cars—though it's unclear if any of them have to do with Guthrie's disappearance. Her car was towed from her garage, her daughter Annie Guthrie's car was seized, and a Range Rover was marked with evidence tape and towed by authorities on Feb. 13.

On Wednesday, Feb. 25, true crime correspondent for AZ Central Briana Whitney said that the Pima County Sheriff's Department confirmed that Annie's car was "still part of the investigation." No further details were given.

Moreover, on Thursday, Feb. 26, video taken from a street-facing camera at a residence about 2.5 miles from Guthrie’s home was shared online. A car was seen speeding down a back road just minutes after Guthrie’s pacemaker disconnected. The footage was turned over to authorities, but it's unclear if it provided any leads.
