1969 Rock Song Inspired by a Hurricane Movie Scene Remains a Timeless Classic 57 Years Later
There’s no doubt that Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) is responsible for some of rock music’s most enduring classics. But given the popularity of the band, which reached its height of success in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s and charted in the Top 10 with over a dozen singles before disbanding in 1972, it’s puzzling to learn that all of their biggest hits fell short of the top spot in the U.S.
Such is the case with their beloved song, “Bad Moon Rising” — a song which features dark, ominous lyrics over a fun and catchy beat and a guitar riff borrowed from the Elvis Presley classic, “I’m Left, You’re Right, She’s Gone.”
Released on April 16, 1969, the tune climbed all the way to the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, getting blocked only by Henry Mancini’s “Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet.” At the time, “Bad Moon Rising,” from the band's Green River album, which topped the Billboard 200 chart, had arrived following the success of previous releases like “Proud Mary” and “Born on the Bayou.”
But that rise didn’t stop them from feeling the pressure to land another hit.
“In those days, you put out singles every few weeks, so when ‘Proud Mary’ was on the radio I knew we had to write the next one,” CCR’s lead vocalist John Fogerty, who penned the tune, said, according to Classic Rock.
“I’d come up with the chords and melody,” he recalls, “and I got the phrase ‘bad moon rising’ from this little book I’d kept song titles in since 1967. I didn’t even know what it meant, I just liked how the words sounded.”
Further explaining the story behind the song, Fogerty said he drew inspiration from a hurricane scene in the 1941 classic film The Devil and Daniel Webster, which tells the story of a down-on-his-luck character who sells his soul to the Devil.
“The scene I liked is where there’s a devastating hurricane; furniture, trees, houses, everything’s blowing around,” Forgerty confirmed. “That story and that look really stuck in my mind, and they were the germ for the song.”
Since its release, “Bad Moon Rising” has gone on to become a summertime anthem that ranked on notable lists, including Rolling Stone’s 2010 ranked list of “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” Throughout the years, the timeless classic has also been covered and recorded by at least 20 different artists from across genres.
1973 Rock Classic, Never a No. 1 Hit, Became an Overnight Radio Anthem
Fifty-three years ago, the iconic '70s band the Doobie Brothers released "China Grove," a hit that would become a lasting radio anthem, even though it never quite captured the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Released on July 25, 1973 as a single from their third studio album The Captain and Me, "China Grove" gradually became a massive hit. Following its initial release, it was played heavily on the airwaves, quickly making it a staple of nationwide album-oriented rock radio (AOR).
Due to its excessive airplay, the track grew major traction throughout the summer of '73. By October, "China Grove" captured its highest charting position, peaking at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. In total, the track spent 13 consecutive weeks on the Hot 100 and eight weeks within the top 40.

Produced by Ted Templeman through Warner Bros. Records, "China Grove" was notable for solidifying the Doobie Brothers' definitive classic rock sound. The track incorporated a chugging guitar riff, quirky piano instrumentation and an infectious melody that captured the attention of anyone listening. Its wide-ranging audience appeal set the groundwork for the band's decade-long reign over the rock genre, with legacy hits like "What a Fool Believes" and "Black Water" following in its footsteps.
Written by lead singer and guitarist Tom Johnston, "China Grove" was a uniquely humorous track, experimenting with fictional characters in a sleepy Texas town. The song was born after Johnston passed a road sign for the town while traveling through the Midwest. Subconsciously, the singer wrote about it, not realizing it was an actual place until years after its release.
Over five decades after its debut, "China Grove" continues to be recognized as an iconic rock classic. It remains a staple on not just rock stations, but also in the digital era through streaming platforms. On Spotify alone, the song has racked up over 194.5 million streams, attesting to its ability to reach new audiences long after its initial release.

Demi Moore Reunites With Former Co-Star From 1993 Hit Film for Emotional New Project
When the film Groundswell premieres on Prime Video on June 5, two familiar voices will be narrating the documentary: Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson. However, the two, who starred together in the 1993 film Indecent Proposal, are much more involved than just the voices viewers will hear.
"I know truly how committed and passionate Woody has been around this subject matter on a variety of levels," Moore, 63, told PEOPLE. "I think what's beautiful is, we both share having three adult daughters, and I think you do feel a greater responsibility as a parent to do whatever part you can to protect this beautiful planet."
View this post on Instagram What is 'Groundswell' About?Groundswell is the third film of a trilogy created by Josh and Rebecca Tickell that began with 2020's Kiss the Ground and continued with 2023's Common Ground. The films explore the positive effects regenerative agriculture and sustainable farming have on our environment and climate. The Tickell's goal is to secure enough support for a transition to regenerative agriculture, converting one billion acres of farmland.
"I know what you're thinking," Harrelson, 64, says at the beginning of the film. "Not another depressing climate documentary. Well, this film is different."
View this post on Instagram More Than Just NarratorsHarrelson and Moore aren't just passive narrators, though; both speak about why they got involved in the film. For Moore, who also serves as an executive producer, it has to do with family.
"I look at that and I say, 'What am I doing today to leave our planet better for my grandchildren and my grandchildren's children?'" she explained. "What we do today, on all levels, creates what our future will look like. I think our planet is clearly crying and hurting."
Moore also admitted that she's taking a step towards sustainability by planting her own garden to grow food.
Harrelson's Renewed OptimismHarrelson, who is an executive producer and narrator on all three films, previously spoke about his renewed optimism, thanks to the public's response to the first two documentaries.
"I’m no longer hopeless," he toldThe Wrap in 2023. "I’m actually inspired. In fact, I’m committed to using my voice and activism to make the regenerative agriculture movement spread far and wide."

Best-Selling Author’s Novel Fueled by ’70s Rock Anthems Named ‘Readers’ Favorite’
An instant New York Times best seller and Readers' Favorite Winner, Taylor Jenkins Reid'sAtmosphereblends historical fiction, ’80s-set romance, and nail-biting thrills into one singular story. In the driver’s seat you have Joan Goodwin, a professor at Rice University in Texas who joins NASA’s space shuttle program as one of the first women to do so.
View this post on Instagram“Then when she is on the ground as CAPCOM on a mission,” Reid shares in recent interview with Goodreads, “everyone she cares about at NASA is up on the spaceship, on that crew, when a disaster strikes. Joan is the lone voice to talk to these people she loves most through this perilous moment.”
To get into that headspace, Reid says she turned to a playlist curated with songs that evoked the setting and feelings she was writing into her characters’ emotional arcs. “I would listen to that playlist throughout the day to just mentally stay in this world,” she says.
On the playlist, there was a “lot of David Bowie,” which shouldn’t come as a surprise, since the ’70s rocker’s oeuvre is brimming with cosmic masterpieces from which Reid could seek inspo: From "Space Oddity," "Life on Mars?" and "Dancing Out in Space," to "Ziggy Stardust," "Starman," and "Moonage Daydream," the list is a black hole of epic space tracks.
Reid also mentions Willie Nelson's "Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” the Indigo Girls, and Brandi Carlile, adding, “One that I really loved, which was 'Far Away Star' by the Chordettes, is an old song, but it just struck the exact right note for me.”

A New Orient Express Journey Will Take Travelers From Rome to Istanbul in Five Luxurious Days
The Orient Express is launching a luxurious five-day journey connecting two European cultural capitals: Rome and Istanbul. Operated by the newly launched La Dolce Vita Orient Express, the itinerary marks the new La Dolce Vita Orient Express train's first international route and offers travelers the opportunity to journey between the two historic cities in extraordinary style.
The five-day, four-night experience is scheduled to debut on October 22, 2026, and it follows in the footsteps of the original Orient Express, which became synonymous with glamorous long-distance rail travel after its inaugural journey from Paris to Constantinople—now Istanbul—in 1883.
View this post on InstagramThe new route departs from Rome and travels through some of Central and Eastern Europe's most captivating destinations before arriving in Turkey. Along the way, passengers will stop in Venice, Budapest, and Romania's Transylvania region, including Brașov and Sinaia, before continuing on to Istanbul.
The launch represents a significant milestone for La Dolce Vita Orient Express, the Italian luxury train that began operations last year. Created through a partnership between Orient Express, Italian hospitality company Arsenale, and Italy's national railway group, the train was developed as a modern interpretation of the golden age of rail travel. Its inaugural journeys focused on destinations throughout Italy, and it has already served 131 cities across 14 regions since welcoming its first passengers on April 4, 2025.
But the Rome-to-Istanbul route expands the experience beyond the country's borders for the first time.
On board, guests can expect interiors inspired by 1960s Italian design, private suites and cabins, gourmet dining curated by three-Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck, and a level of service intended to evoke the romance of classic train travel. According to Orient Express, the itinerary was designed to blend cultural discovery, scenic landscapes, and luxury hospitality into a single immersive journey.
The Rome-to-Istanbul itinerary also pays tribute to the historic legacy of the Orient Express. While the famous Venice Simplon-Orient-Express still operates select journeys to Istanbul, the new route offers a distinctly Italian interpretation of the experience. The train's operators describe it as a celebration of "La Dolce Vita"—the Italian art of living well—combined with the adventure and grandeur that made the original Orient Express a global icon.
Luxury rail travel is experiencing a renaissance worldwide, driven by travelers seeking unique experiences that combine comfort, sustainability, and cultural immersion. The Orient Express brand is at the center of that revival, with new trains, hotels, and travel experiences planned over the coming years. The Rome-to-Istanbul journey is expected to become one of the flagship offerings in that expansion, giving travelers a chance to retrace a legendary route while enjoying the comforts of modern luxury.
1976 'Gig That Changed the World' Happened 50 Years Ago Today
In 1976, a concert attended by fewer than 50 people helped change the course of modern music.
On June 4, 1976, the Sex Pistols took the stage at Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall in England. At the time, the band had existed for only a few months and punk rock was still largely an underground movement. But the audience that night would go on to shape popular music for decades to come.
The show has since become known as "The Gig That Changed the World."
According to a History Channel retrospective, only around 40 people attended the concert. Yet among those in the crowd were future members of Buzzcocks, Joy Division, The Smiths and The Fall, along with future Factory Records founder Tony Wilson. Those artists and organizations would become central figures in punk, post-punk, alternative rock and indie music throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.
The event came about after two Manchester music fans, Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley, traveled to London to see the Sex Pistols perform. Inspired by what they witnessed, they invited the band to Manchester and soon formed their own group, Buzzcocks.
Looking back on the experience years later, Devoto told author David Nolan, "I know that it changed my life beyond a whole roomful of shadows of doubt. Forever."
Among the most famous attendees were future Joy Division members Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook. According to accounts of the night, Hook purchased his first instrument the very next day after seeing the Sex Pistols perform. The band those young musicians eventually formed would become one of the most influential acts of the post-punk era.
Future Smiths frontman Morrissey was also in attendance, as was Mark E. Smith, who would go on to found The Fall. Meanwhile, television presenter Wilson was inspired to help create Factory Records, the label that later launched Joy Division and New Order while helping establish Manchester as one of the most important music cities in the world.
The BBC later noted that the ripple effects stretched far beyond Manchester. Without that June 1976 concert and a follow-up Sex Pistols appearance six weeks later, there may have been no Buzzcocks, Joy Division, New Order, Factory Records, The Smiths, The Fall or the famed Madchester scene that emerged years later. Some music historians have even argued that bands ranging from Nirvana to Oasis, Green Day and Radiohead owe part of their lineage to the inspiration sparked by that small gathering.
Steve Diggle of Buzzcocks summed up the show's legacy by saying: "That was the day the punk rock atom was split, no doubt about it. It was amazing to see. That's where it exploded from, it changed Manchester and it changed the world."
Formed in London in 1975, the Sex Pistols became one of the defining acts of the punk rock movement despite their original run lasting less than three years. The group's classic lineup featured Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock, with Sid Vicious later joining on bass.
Their 1977 album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols became a landmark release, while songs such as "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen" helped make them one of the most controversial and influential bands of their era. Today, the group's impact on punk, alternative rock and independent music remains impossible to ignore.

'80s Heavy Metal Guitarist Announced as Special Feature on New Country-Rock Album
Country-rock singer Tim Montana has announced his latest album, featuring some of the world's greatest musicians and actors.
Entire State of Tim Montana will be released on July 31. It's the eighth studio album from the musician, and the sixteen-track record includes assists from Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, Alice in Chains guitarist and singer Jerry Cantrell, and ZZ Top guitarist and vocalist Billy F Gibbons, along with cameos from actors Robert Patrick, Martin Sheen, and Charlie Sheen, with the Two and a Half Men star naming the album.
At the time of the announcement, Montana also released the album's second single, “Brown Sugar,” which features instrumentals from Gibbonsand Slash. The singer said that recording music with the powerhouses was a full-circle moment in his career.
"My first brush with music was finding a Guns N’ Roses tape, and later I became a die-hard ZZ Top fan,” explained Montana. “Billy is like family, and seeing him play 'Brown Sugar' at our Wise River Club made me realize it had to be the one. To have these childhood heroes, Billy, who’s become a mentor, and Slash, who lit that early spark on this track with me, is beyond a dream."
“This record is a collision of my heroes and my scars, the loudest moments I’ve ever lived and the quiet truths I couldn’t outrun," he continued.
In 2023, Montana reached the top five on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart with "Devil You Know," marking his first appearance on the charts as a singer. The Nashville-based artist has previously charted with his work as a songwriter.
Montana co-wrote Kid Rock’s “Tennessee Mountain Top” and “Greatest Show on Earth,” which peaked at No. 10 and 39, respectively, on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart in 2017.
Across the summer, Montana has scheduled appearances at some of music's top festivals, including Blessing in Disguise in Spokane, WA, and Rocklahoma in Pryor, OK.

Beloved Folk Rock Legend, 84, Makes Long-Awaited Return After Making Peace With Hearing Loss

The 84-year-old folk rock legend will release a new concert film, Paul Simon: The Quiet Celebration Concert, premiering June 26 on Disney+ and Hulu, Hulu announced on Thursday, June 4. A companion live album follows on Oct. 9.
The nearly two-hour film was recorded at McCaw Hall in Seattle during Simon's "A Quiet Celebration" tour, the intimate 2025 run he staged in small, acoustically rich venues. At its center is a milestone: the first-ever complete live performance of his Grammy-nominated Seven Psalms, paired with reworked versions of his classic hits and deep cuts.

Former Prince Andrew Spotted in Rare Appearance With Prominent Bruise on His Cheek
A rare sighting of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, is sparking attention due to a noticeable mark on his face.
On Thursday, June 4, TMZ posted photos of the former royal, who had a large bruise on the side of his face. He was riding in the passenger seat of a car as paparazzi snapped pictures of him, and the purple-colored bruise was hard to ignore.
Andrew has been staying out of the public eye after being stripped of his royal titles. His brother, King Charles III made the decision last year, months after Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office in February 2025. According to BBC News, police conducted a full search of Andrew's home at Royal Lodge and at least one other property.
The move marked a major turning point in Andrew’s public standing, as he has largely retreated from official royal duties in recent years amid ongoing scrutiny. His appearances since then have been infrequent, with most attention now coming from occasional photographs or reports rather than public engagements.
At the time of this writing, Andrew has not been criminally charged. However, on June 2, The Times UK reported that police are looking into new allegations brought against the disgraced royal. These allegations reportedly stem from events in 2002, including "including sexual misconduct, corruption and fraud."
Andrew has not commented on the images, and no explanation for the bruise has been provided. The sighting marks one of the few recent public glimpses of the former royal amid his continued low profile.

Trader Joe's New $2 Carnival Throwback Is Dividing Shoppers, and the Comments Are Wild
A summertime classic just landed on Trader Joe’s shelves. The retailer recently debuted a new limited-time product, and shoppers have something to say about this county fair favorite.
You don’t have to go to a carnival just to get this Sour Cherry Cotton Candy. Now you can pick up the 1.5-ounce tub at your local TJ’s. And while the nostalgic seasonal sweet is usually made with artificial ingredients, Trader Joe’s supplier takes a healthier route and colors the fluffy stuff with vegetable juice, turmeric, and annatto.
View this post on Instagram What do Trader Joe’s shoppers think about the new Sour Cherry Cotton Candy? The retailer’s fans aren't waiting to speak out about this new find. When influencer Talia Heskett (a.k.a. Trader Joe’s Talia) posted a clip of this limited-time buy on Instagram, one commenter didn’t seem satisfied with the selection: “Sorry, but they brought in cotton candy? Ugh. Passed up a good opportunity for a great snack for cotton candy. How many people actually buy that? It’s just so boring. IMO.”
But not every shopper agreed. Fans of the new item fired back with, “Sour cherry ‘cmon? That’s exciting. Also $2 cotton candy with natural colors? A steal. And also, you can reuse the tub. I mean you can use for food storage or something,” and, “I got the sour cherry cotton candy yesterday. I’m not a sour candy person, but I liked it!”
Redditors also gave their two cents on the new item. On the Trader Joe’s subreddit, one TJ’s shopper wrote, “Not sour at all, but still has good flavor!” Others chimed in to express their opinions, including “So good. Some bites are sweet, and some are super sour, I like the dopamine rush of not knowing which I’d be getting,” and “I'm going to pick this up the next time I see it because it would delight the inner child in me.”
When it came to the sourness (or possibly the lack thereof), shoppers were divided. After the initial comment saying it was “Not sour at all,” one Redditor clapped back, “I thought it was incredibly sour! I would expect everyone to think it was sour unless they eat sour candies all the time.”
That spurred a new conversation about the cotton candy’s precise type of sour, with one Redditor asking, “Are we talking medical cherry or a slushie/sweet cherry?” Of course, the answers were split again, with one commenter writing, “It’s worse than medicine,” and another replying, “Sweet cherry, it’s good, but I wouldn’t purchase again.”
And then there was this wild comment: One went so far as to say, “It was like licking an electrical socket.” Yikes!
It looks like shoppers will have to decide for themselves. Luckily, you can get a tub for $1.99 at Trader Joe’s right now.

That was when King suggested a very specific romantic lead.
"Do I fall in love with Tom Brady? No, does he fall in love with me?" King asked. "You're very good at manifesting."
King then praised Brady, calling the former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback "one of the nicest people."

The Brady talk did not end there.
Later in the interview, King teased Lopez and Goldstein about their own chemistry as they discussed Office Romance.
"I love the chemistry on and off the camera," King said, according to Page Six. "If it does turn out to be something, I'd like to be included in … birthday parties, engagement parties, weddings. Just throwing it out there."
Goldstein then turned the joke back on King.
"Please invite us to the Tom and Gayle wedding," he quipped.
King played along, making it clear that Brady was not exactly in on the joke yet.
She asked Goldstein to "let [Brady] know," adding that the former quarterback was "not aware" of her crush.
Gayle King Previously Talked About Tom Brady on 'Call Her Daddy'King's latest comments come about a week after she appeared on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast, where she also brought up Brady while discussing dating.
During that episode, King said she would be interested in dating someone younger, though she clarified that she did not mean someone dramatically younger.
"[I want] not someone I could give birth to but younger," King said, according to Page Six. "You know, like, Tom Brady's age."

The seven-time Super Bowl champion finalized his divorce from Gisele Bündchen in 2022 after more than a decade of marriage. Since then, Brady has been linked in reports to several public figures, including model Irina Shayk.
King, meanwhile, has not publicly dated anyone since her divorce from Bumpus in 1993.
