In July 1958, Eddie Cochran, one of the golden age of rock and roll’s greatest legends, released “Summertime Blues,” a rockabilly classic he co-wrote at 19.

A decade later—and in the dead of winter—Blue Cheer released their own version of the song. Transforming Cochran’s polished classic into a notoriously distorted, proto-metal cover, the San Francisco band then had a sizzler on their hands. 

More than that, though, Far Out reported that their gargantuan cover was the very first heavy metal song to ever break into the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“We were outraged at society in general, and we were expressing it in a way that had never been done,” bassist-slash-vocalist Dickie Peterson told the Albuquerque Journal in 2008, per The Washington Post, about how the trio channeled their rage into a mix of blues and acid rock music.

Widely recognized for its wall-of-sound volume and raw distortion, Blue Cheer’s “Summertime Blues” peaked at No. 14 on the survey. It was a feat that not only boosted its parent album, Vincebus Eruptum, to No. 11 on the Billboard 200, but also helped usher heavy metal into the mainstream. 

Far Out also shared that the turning point for the subgenre included the arrival of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple in 1968, but also Steppenwolf enshrining the term in “Born to Be Wild” with their lyric, "Heavy metal thunder," and, of course, the explosion of Blue Cheer’s landmark cover.

“It was, for all intents and purposes, a major leap forward and a template for the genre’s future,” Far Out wrote, “showcasing the pace and headiness that many metal stalwarts would soon claim as their own.”

Cochran’s original did well for itself, too. Climbing to No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Summertime Blues” made history as the singer-songwriter’s first Top 10 hit. It seemed like just about every band who took a stab at covering it had success. The Beach Boys in 1962, The Who in 1970, and even Alan Jackson in 1994 all proved the song’s versatility and ability to define whatever era it was released in. 

But there was nothing quite like Blue Cheer’s fuzzed-out raw energy of the track. By replacing traditional rock melodies with towering distortion, thunderous bass, and aggressive drums, Peterson, Leigh Stephens, and Paul Whaley paved the way for bands like Black Sabbath and countless other heavy rock acts.

“Primarily, we were a loud, straight-into-you rock ‘n’ roll band, man,” Peterson told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 2007, per the Los Angeles Times. “Our whole goal was to make music a physical experience as well as an audio experience.”

Music experts and historians often cite Blue Cheer’s version of the track as one of the very first heavy metal songs ever recorded, pushing the boundaries and conventions of rock with louder amps, longer guitar solos, and more chaotic riffs, then essentially laying the groundwork for heavy metal as it would soon be defined. 

When Rolling Stone then used the term “heavy metal” in a 1968 review of Blue Cheer’s album, the outlet all but cemented the band’s legacy as heavy metal pioneers. Just proves that sometimes all it takes to spark a music revolution is one teenager’s frustrations with a summer job.

One of the most innovative and influential musicians in rock history is celebrating a birthday today: Roger McGuinn, frontman and founding member of the Byrds, is now 84 years old.

Born on July 13, 1942, McGuinn helped to launch the folk rock genre when he convinced the other members of the Byrds to record an electric cover of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man." Though the song was met with controversy among folk purists when it was released in 1965, the Byrd's version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, thanks in no small part to the revolutionary jingle jangle of McGuinn's Rickenbacker 12-string guitar.

“I still didn't know what an electric 12-string was, but when the Beatles released ‘A Hard Day's Night,’ I had to find out how they were getting that sound,” McGuinn told Guitar Player. “So we made a reconnaissance run to a movie theater that was showing A Hard Day's Night and took notes."

“Ringo [Starr] had Ludwig drums and John had that little Rickenbacker 325," McGuinn continued. "George [Harrison] played a Gretsch most of the time, but he also had a Rickenbacker 360, which looked like a six-string, until he turned sideways and you could see six extra tuning pegs emerging from behind the headstock, like a classical guitar. Once I realized what it was, I traded in my Gibson acoustic 12 and bought a Rickenbacker 360/12."

McGuinn went on to say that he "practiced eight hours a day on that Rick,” developing his signature, pioneering style, which ended up having a major impact on countless musicians to come (from Tom Petty to Peter Buck to Mike Campbell and beyond).

"I'll never forget hearing 'Mr. Tambourine Man' for the first time on the radio — the feeling of that Rickenbacker 12-string guitar and those incredible harmonies," Petty wrote for a Rolling Stone article which ranked the Byrds at #45 on a list of the '100 Greatest Artists of All Time.' "Roger McGuinn told me he took that guitar sound from A Hard Day's Night, but McGuinn was a banjo player, and he played the Rickenbacker in this rolling, fingerpicking style — no one had really tried it before."

"All of folk rock — for lack of a better term — descends directly from the music the Byrds made," Petty continued. "They were certainly the first to introduce any sort of country element into rock music. As if all that wasn't enough, the Byrds spurred on a good degree of Bob Dylan's popularity, too. And not to be too shallow, but they also were just the best-dressed band around. They had those great clothes and hairdos. That counted for something even then."

Speaking of Dylan, McGuinn's post-Byrds solo career would include plenty of collaborations with the iconic musician, including the soundtrack of the Sam Peckinpah's 1973 movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. He also joined Dylan in 1975 and 1976 as part the legendary Rolling Thunder Revue.

"I first met Dylan in the early days of The Byrds," McGuinn told Classic Rock in 2009.

"He really hadn’t changed by the time he asked me to do the Rolling Thunder tour with him," McGuinn continued. "He was often a visitor at my house in Malibu. He liked the house a lot and wanted to rent it from me. One time we were up there and he said: 'I wanna do something different, man.' When I asked what he meant, he said: 'I dunno, maybe something like a circus.' Six months later I was in New York and bumped into him in the Village. That’s when he invited me to go on the tour. He wanted to revive the spirit of Greenwich Village with Rolling Thunder. It was like a travelling artists’ colony. There were about 300 people on the road with him."

While McGuinn's long (and still-going) career would continue to evolve, even taking a Gram Parsons-influenced detour into country music, his most lasting legacy will always be the music he created with the Byrds. As Petty wrote, "Those original Byrds really changed the world in that short time they were together."

Possibly no singer is more emblematic of the classic rock era than Robert Plant. Nobody truly embodied the rockstar image of the '70s quite like Plant, who absolutely devours the stage with his presence, charisma, and vocal prowess.

Now that he's in his later years, Plant has been adapting his classic sound into a more stripped back, folksy, and down to Earth style. His shows have turned from raucous and flashy to quiet and contemplative. Having been to one of his newer performances, it's a unique experience that is both different yet equally masterful. He is still able to command the stage just as well as he did back in the '70s.

At a recent one of these shows, Plant decided to perform one of his biggest hits, "Black Dog," and give it a humorous spin that the crowd was absolutely loving.

Plant took time during the instrumental breaks in the verses of the song to poke fun at his lyrics, and laugh along with the audience. Seeing a musician not take themselves seriously in such a candid way is really hilarious, especially with such a beloved song like "Black Dog."

Fans were super into the performance, both finding it humorous and impressive. Taking to the comments, they left their support.

Few songs capture the easygoing sound of 1970s AM radio quite like Ozark Mountain Daredevils' 1975 hit "Jackie Blue."

Released as a single in February 1975 from the band's album It'll Shine When It Shines, the dreamy soft rock tune climbed all the way to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 1 on both the Cash Box and Record World singles charts. It remains the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' signature song and one of the defining radio staples of the decade.

With its shimmering melody, Larry Lee's gentle lead vocal and instantly recognizable "Ooh, Jackie Blue" refrain, the song sounded unlike almost anything else the Springfield, Missouri, band had recorded. Band member Steve Cash immediately recognized its potential, later saying it had "something" and a hook that could make it a radio hit, while fellow member Jerry Mills believed its straightforward structure simply sounded great coming through a car radio.

Ironically, the song almost told a very different story.

Drummer Lee originally wrote "Jackie Blue" about a man he knew, a bartender and drug dealer who seemed to exist only at night. In bassist Michael "Supe" Granda's book "It Shined: The Saga of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils," Lee recalled telling the story of the bartender to legendary record producer Glyn Johns, who immediately objected.

"Glyn just said, 'No. No. No, mate. Jackie Blue has to be a girl. Now, you and Cash go back there and change it.'" said Lee. "So Steve and I went into one of the other studios with a piano in it, where we just knocked some new lyrics out in about thirty minutes. Instead of some drugged-out guy, we changed Jackie to a reclusive girl.""

Lee and Steve Cash stepped away and completely reworked the lyrics in about half an hour, transforming Jackie into the mysterious woman listeners have imagined ever since. The finished song paints a portrait of someone living in her own private world, with lyrics about dreams, loneliness and quiet independence.

Granda added, "When the rest of us heard the new lyrics for the first time, our collective jaw hit the floor … the new lyrics were great, and Larry sang them wonderfully."

The change proved to be a pivotal one.

"Jackie Blue" became the band's biggest crossover success, introducing the Ozark Mountain Daredevils to millions of listeners who may never have heard their country rock roots. The single's success was fueled by heavy radio airplay, particularly in markets like Baltimore and Chicago, before spreading across the country.

Yet the song's popularity also became something of a double-edged sword.

According to band members, A&M Records hoped they would continue chasing the same polished pop sound. Granda later joked that the label wanted "Jackie Green" and "Jackie Brown," while Lee recalled executives pushing for an entire album of songs that sounded like "Jackie Blue."

Instead, the band largely stayed true to its eclectic blend of country rock, folk and bluegrass influences. Although they never matched the chart success of "Jackie Blue," the song has continued to find new audiences for decades through classic rock and soft rock radio.

More than 50 years later, its wistful melody, unforgettable chorus and enigmatic central character still make it one of the most enduring songs of the 1970s. Whether listeners know every word or simply recognize that opening "Ooh, Jackie Blue," it's the kind of song that instantly transports them back to another era of radio.

Twenty-six years after forming, Mastodon is preparing to begin a new era.

The Grammy-winning progressive metal band has announced that its ninth studio album, Marrow Deep, will be released on Aug. 28 via Loma Vista Recordings. The announcement arrived alongside the debut of the album’s latest single, "Snakes For Dinner," which features a guest appearance from Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme.

The band shared the news with fans on Instagram, writing: "It's been quite the journey making this album, and we are very happy with how it came out, we can not wait for you to hear the whole thing!"

Marrow Deep is the band's first full-length album since 2021's Hushed and Grim and the first to feature guitarist Nick Johnston following the death of founding guitarist Brent Hinds in 2025. Inspired by the Three Fates of Greek mythology, the album explores themes of life, grief and destiny while documenting one of the most emotional periods in the band’s history.

Bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders said the band's renewed chemistry helped shape the record.

"Bill, Brann and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us," Sanders said in a statement. "That's a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice. It's reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we're united, and excited to get to work. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to do this record."

Drummer Brann Dailor also reflected on the album's emotional significance.

"Hopefully this album helps everybody," he said. "Hopefully they can find some piece of it that speaks to them about it. I know Brent's not there and it's weird and it's hard, and some people might be like, 'Well I don't wanna listen to it because Brent's not there and I'm hurting about that', but we are too. Big time."

Formed in Atlanta in 2000, Mastodon has become one of the defining metal bands of the 21st century through acclaimed albums including Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye, The Hunter, Emperor of Sand and Hushed and Grim. Along the way, the band has earned six Grammy nominations and won Best Metal Performance in 2018 for "Sultan's Curse."

Mastodon will celebrate the release of Marrow Deep with The Poisonous Weapons Tour, which kicks off Sept. 16 in Orlando with support from Deafheaven and Alcest before wrapping up Oct. 24 at Sick New World Dallas.

For a band that has weathered lineup changes, personal loss and more than two decades in heavy music, Marrow Deep represents more than just another album. One of the most famous examples of this type of children's book is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, published in 1865. Despite being over 160 years old, Collider recently named the whimsical classic as the "best children's book of all time."

The publication's ranking, published on July 10, also featured beloved children's books like 1926'sWinnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne, 1957's The Cat in the Hatby Dr. Seuss, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone byJ.K. Rowling, published in 1997, and 1952's Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. According to Collider, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland deserves to be at the top of the list partly due to Carroll's ability to world-build with his memorable descriptions of Wonderland's topsy-turvy ways.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, 1871's Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, served as inspiration for the Disneyanimated film, Alice in Wonderland, which premiered in 1951. In an interview featurette for the Alice in Wonderland DVD, Disney animator Eric Goldberg shared that he believed that the lasting popularity of Carroll's books hinges on the sheer weirdness of Wonderland. He also theorized that the books became so iconic partly because of John Tenniel's illustrations.

"I think the book Alice in Wonderland is popular because it's completely absurd," said Goldberg, who worked on Disney films like Aladdin and Hercules. "And also, I think the John Tenniel illustrations are very, very striking and very memorable for people. So I think the book in its kind of weirdness, persists because, you know, people like weird, as they did when it was new. Still today it spans all generations."

In a separate interview for the DVD's featurette, Disney historian and artist Stacia Martin shared her belief as to why readers of all ages have been drawn to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.

"It appeals to adults on the plane of logic, puzzles, and very intrepid word play. But also to children, it's just this amazing, almost a free-form fantasy world. It's kind of a self-guided tour of the inner workings of imagination," said Martin in the interview.

After announcing that his mother is officially cancer-free, Below Deck Mediterranean deckhand Joe Bradley is also highlighting the person who has stood by his family's side throughout her breast cancer journey: Captain Sandy Yawn.

Joe shared the joyful update on Instagram, revealing that after months of fear, uncertainty, and emotional highs and lows, his family is finally celebrating the news they had been praying for. Reflecting on his mother's diagnosis, he said watching someone he loves battle breast cancer was the hardest experience his family has ever faced. He praised her strength through every appointment, treatment, setback, and unknown before revealing she had received the all-clear.

"Love you mum, cancer chose the wrong woman," Joe wrote, while thanking everyone who offered prayers, messages, and support during the difficult months.

In an interview with Parade shortly before his mother's good news, Joe revealed that Captain Sandy's support extended far beyond what viewers saw on the show. After helping connect him with a cancer surgeon during filming, Sandy continued checking in with both Joe and his mother throughout her treatment.

"She's been an angel," Joe said. "She's been an angel in the process. Even to this present day. She still checks in. She checked in with my mum the other day. She sent her a personal message."

Joe also shared that he had been spending time at home with his mother during her recovery, cherishing the simple moments they now get to enjoy together.

"She's doing absolutely amazing," he said. "I get the pleasure of making her a cup of tea every single morning and seeing that smile on her face. It's a gift."

Between the interest in GLP-1s and desire to ward off the dreaded 3 p.m. slump, blood sugar control has become a buzzy word on social media. Keeping blood sugar in check can indeed protect you against type 2 diabetes (or help you manage it if you have it) and keep you from becoming "hangry" and exhausted in the afternoon. However, registered dietitians like Amanda Sauceda, MS, RD, are noticing a rumor: fruits like bananas and strawberries are "bad" for blood sugar. Is that true? Not quite.

"While fruit is a source of natural sugar, like fructose, it won’t have the same effect on your body when compared to eating candy or refined carbohydrates," Sauceda tells Parade. "Fruit is a mix of natural sugar along with a variety of vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber, which makes it better for your blood sugar."

But which one is better for blood sugar: strawberries or bananas? After all, different fruits have distinct nutrient profiles, offering benefits to everything from your immune system to your brain health. When it comes to blood sugar, you can start by looking at the glycemic index (GI).

"The glycemic index (GI) is a scale that measures how quickly carbohydrate-containing foods raise blood sugar levels compared to glucose, a form of sugar," says Kara Dawson, RD, the clinical nutrition manager at HonorHealth Four Peaks Medical Center.

Dawson says the scale ranges from 0 to 100, and high-GI foods (70 or above) cause rapid spikes in blood sugar. Low-GI items are digested slowly (55 and below), so blood sugar rises and falls more gradually. Below, registered dietitians will explain whether strawberries or bananas have a lower GI. However, that's not all to keep in mind when evaluating a food's effect on blood sugar. Bananas vs. Strawberries for Blood Sugar

If managing blood sugar is a concern when you eat, strawberries may support you better than bananas. Here's why:

• Strawberries are a lower-GI food than bananas. Dawson points out that strawberries have a GI of about 40, which classifies them as a low-glycemic food. A banana's GI depends on ripeness, with a medium one coming in at about 42-51. But riper bananas can have a GI of 56-85. "Bananas can cause a slightly quicker rise in blood sugar level, even if you eat the same number of calories of strawberries and bananas," she says.
• Strawberries have a better fiber-to-total-carb ratio than bananas. Technically, bananas have a little more fiber by weight (about 2.6 grams per 100 grams, compared with about 2 grams per 100 grams in strawberries, reports Dr. Chris Mohr, Ph.D., RD, a fitness and nutrition advisor for Garage Gym Reviews). Fiber slows digestion, helping keep blood sugar from rising too quickly after eating. Yet, the fiber edge somehow goes to strawberries. Here's why: "Strawberries have much fewer carbs overall, so they give you a good amount of fiber for a lower sugar load," he adds.
• Strawberries are packed with antioxidants to support blood sugar. Dr. Mohr says that strawberries contain anti-inflammatory properties, including vitamin C and anthocyanins (a plant-based compound). Some research suggests that eating strawberries may reduce blood sugar and insulin response when eaten with a higher-carb meal, but this can vary by person.

Quick note: While strawberries edge out bananas for blood sugar, Dr. Mohr notes that it matters how you consume the strawberries. "The main thing to watch is the form, since jams, syrups, sweetened dried strawberries and desserts with strawberries can have a lot of added sugar," he says.

Bananas vs. Strawberries for Energy

Bananas have components that make them better than strawberries for a sustainable energy boost. Here are RDs' reasons:

• A medium banana has double the calories as a cup of strawberries. Despite what diet culture would have us believe, calories are not the enemy. Calories simply measure energy—energy that helps us breathe, think, digest food, tissue repair and so many other vital functions," says Sharniquia White, MS, a culinary dietitian and the founder of YouNiqly Nourishing LLC. "This could make [bananas] better suited for long day snacks or pre-/post-workout, since they provide more energy."
• A medium banana boasts more than twice the carbs as one cup of strawberries. Carbs aren't evil, either. "Carbohydrates are the body's preferred energy source," White says. "Carbohydrates get broken down into glucose, which then enters the bloodstream and becomes available for cells to produce energy. The brain, muscles and nervous system all heavily rely on carbohydrates for sustained energy."
• Bananas are a great source of vitamin B6. Sauceda says vitamin B6 helps "unlock the energy from your food." "After you eat, your body will break down your food, then start to absorb those nutrients," she explains. "From there, the body uses vitamins, like B6, to convert the food you eat into a fuel source for your cells."
• Bananas will net you powerful potassium. Potassium is a vital nutrient for your overall health–energy levels included. "Potassium...helps with processes needed for nerve communication, muscle contractions and each cell’s metabolic processes," Dawson says.

To any caring parent, guardian or grandparent, there's nothing worse than the sound of their child in distress. And whether your kid is crying, overwhelmed or even just throwing a tantrum, it can be difficult to help them calm down—especially once you start feeling their emotional pain yourself.

Fortunately, there are a few child psychologist-approved methods that can calm kids down quickly. In fact, we spoke with two child psychologists who happen to agree on the same parenting phrase that adults should use when trying to co-regulate kids or grandkids.

Both Dr. Rebecca Weksner, Psy.D., PMH-C NCSP, a Massachusetts-based licensed clinical psychologist specializing in pediatrics and parenting, and Dr. Adina Chesir, Psy.D., a New York City-based licensed clinical psychologist who works with children, teens and adults, concur that this particular phrase can make a huge difference when dealing with a distressed child.

That said, Dr. Weksner stresses, "Even though this phrase is likely to help calm your little one—especially the more and more you use it—there is no guarantee that it will always work on every kid."

Additionally, the psychologists share a few specific ways they recommend talking to children who are emotionally agitated, as well as one approach you should avoid. Keep reading for their insights.

This Parenting Phrase Calms Kids the Fastest, 2 Child Psychologists Agree

The parenting phrase that Dr. Weksner and Dr. Chesir agree can help calm kids fast is: "right now." That's because the phrase "right now" reminds a child that their feeling is temporary and will pass.

For example, Dr. Weksner suggests saying things like, "Yes, I know you are super annoyed right now," or "It does feel overwhelming right now."

"The 'right now' provides the perspective needed to remember that feelings are not facts and do not last forever. Emotions come and go, ebb and flow," she tells Parade.

Using the verbiage "right now" can also help your child or teen's brain "to see past the intensity of the distress to when they will feel differently," Dr. Weksner adds. "It won't make things better all at once, but it will take the hardest edge off their upset and that softening is often enough for them to access their problem-solving skills again."

Similarly, Dr. Chesir suggests using phrases like, "I know you're feeling really sad right now." Not only does this remind your child that the feeling is temporary, but it also helps them identify their feelings as well as show them that you acknowledge the validity of their emotions.

3 More Approaches To Help Calm a Child, According to Experts

Besides including "right now," in your communication, here are three other helpful approaches to co-regulate your child.

1. Speak low and slow

Dr. Weksner says "shifting into speaking low and slow" can help calm little ones. And by low, she means both lowering your height as well as the tone of your voice.

"By dropping your speaking voice an octave and your physical posture to eye level with the child, you offer a model of how to calm to the child's brain without explicit instruction," she explains. "When you speak more slowly than usual, their brain is able to incorporate your words more effectively since an agitated brain [cannot] process language all that well."

2. Give them a task to do with clear instructions

"Generally speaking, dysregulated kids respond best when they are given clear directions on the next step that is expected of them," explains Dr. Weksner. So instead of simply telling your child to calm down, she suggests telling your child to do something that could make them feel calm—and make sure to give them very clear directions. Here are some examples she shares:

• "Take three gulps of water and then we can figure this out together."
  "Drinking water in big gulps—especially from a straw—forces diaphragmatic breathing, which is the antidote to distress," Dr. Weksner says.
• "Do four soldier jumping jacks with me and then we can find a way to fix the problem."
  Dr. Weksner explains that soldier jumping jacks activate the whole body and "offers release of the agitated energy the child is holding."
• "Go get me your blue socks from the drawer and then we can make a plan for what happens next."
  "Looking for a specific item moves the cognitive activity away from the emotional brain and into higher order thinking processes thus offering inherent regulation," she explains.

3. Reflect their feelings back to them

"When a child is having a meltdown, the best thing to do is to simply reflect their feelings back to them," says Dr. Chesir. As mentioned above, you can use the phrase "I know you're feeling really sad right now," or something like "Wow, I can see this is really hard for you."

By validating your child's feelings, "it communicates to the child that you see and understand how they are feeling," says Dr. Chesir. "Children often escalate their behaviors in an attempt to communicate what they are experiencing, so when a parent acknowledges those feelings, it reduces the need to 'turn up the volume.'"

Additionally, some children may not yet know how to put their feelings into words—so by gently helping label their feelings, you can help them "make sense of their internal experience and build emotional awareness."

What Not To Do When Trying To Calm Down Your Child

As adults, we tend to use logic and problem-solving skills when someone's in distress—but this approach isn't what kids typically need in moments of turmoil, says Dr. Chesir.

"Parents may feel the urge to do more, such as try to reason, problem-solve or reassure," she tells Parade. However, simply reflecting your child's current feelings back to them—while reminding them that those feelings are just for "right now"—"is enough to de-escalate, and is often what the child needs most in that moment."

There are three things guaranteed in the world today: Death, taxes, and Jeopardy! being on. Believe it or not, the iconic game show has been on the air for over 60 years (though the modern incarnation we know and love technically debuted in 1984). Under the watchful eye of Ken Jennings (who himself was a record-breaking champion), Jeopardy! puts three people's trivia skills and reflexes to the ultimate test. And so many of the greats to grace those podiums started by simply watching the show as it aired on weekdays, as millions have done for over half a century.

The answer: "What is In Cold Blood?"

Groen ended the DJ round with a runaway lead, amassing $18,500 to Rakes and Neighbors’ $8,400 and $3,800, respectively. 

The trio answered FJ correctly, with Groen wagering $1,000 for a final day total of $19,500. Rakes wagered nothing, keeping $8,400 and her second-place spot, while Neighbors added his $27 wager for a third-place spot of $3,827. 

Groen will be back on Tuesday for attempt number 9.

Laura Dern is honoring the memory of her longtime friend and Jurassic Park co-star Sam Neill following his sudden death.

Neill, who brought paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant to life across the franchise, died Monday, July 13, in Sydney. His family confirmed the news of his death on Instagram on July 13, describing his passing with the same grace he carried throughout his life. "Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life," the statement read.

Dern, 59, who played paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler opposite Neill's Grant, didn't hold back when reflecting on their decades-long bond.

She shared a deeply personal statement with People, stating, "Sam was my beloved lifetime friend… He showed me the depths of loyalty, protectiveness and love always with the driest of wit." Dern continued, sharing, "He was a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man. I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant."

Steven Spielberg Reflects on Casting Neill in the Role That Made Him a Star View this post on Instagram

Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg also shared his own tribute, tracing the roots of Neill's casting back to the filmmakers who first spotted his talent. 

"I owe a debt of gratitude to Roger Donaldson, Gilliam Armstrong, Graham Baker and Phillip Noyce for casting Sam Neill in the roles in which he was so brilliant that brought him to my attention and led to his playing Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park," Spielberg said in a statement shared by Amblin Entertainment’s Instagram page.

He also touched on how far the role was from who Neill actually was as a father. "Sam was exceptionally collaborative. It was a stretch for him to play a character who acted as though children were messy and smelly because this was the opposite of the loving father he was to his children." Spielberg closed his statement with a promise that Neill's legacy would live on. 

"I adored making all the Jurassicmovies with him. Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, we will always have our Jurassic family and Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world."

Neill's family confirmed his death came as a shock, describing it as "sudden and unexpected."

Their full statement read, "Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for their incredible care. After 18 years of marriage, Tom Segura and Christina P. have decided to separate, TMZ reports. The split occurred within the last couple of months, and it is described as "amicable."

"They had a special and productive relationship, creating one of the most successful comedy podcast networks in the industry and, more importantly, two kids," sources familiar with the situation further told the outlet. "They are taking different paths moving forward while remaining devoted to their children."

The two got married in 2008 and share two children - Ellis (2016) and Julian (2018). They co-founded YMH Studios, which is a popular production company known for creating comedy podcasts as well as content for film and television. According to the website, it is home to comedians such as "Bert Kreischer, Ari Shaffir, Chris DiStefano, Yannis Pappas, and more."

TMZ further adds that the two will continue to co-host their show, "Your Mom's House."

Segura also has his popular show "Bad Thoughts,' with the second season having recently received an Emmy nomination for outstanding short-form comedy, drama, or variety series. As for Christina, she has two Netflix comedy specials as well as her own beauty company called Christina P. Cosmetics.

Fans reacted to the news, reflecting on their love story and praising the couple for their plans going forward.

"Their decision to keep co-hosting after an amicable split shows many long marriages evolve into different but functional partnerships, especially when shared business success is involved," one person wrote.

"After 18 years together, this is a major life change for both of them. Wishing Tom and Christina peace, respect, and happiness as they navigate this new chapter," another person commented.
