Thirty-six years ago today, George Michael put out an album and then did everything he could to keep his own face off it.

Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 landed in the U.K. on Sept. 3, 1990. It went in at No. 1 and then sat in the Top 10 for another 18 weeks. Columbia put it out in the U.S. four days later. That part did not go the same way.

It Was Never Going to Be Another ‘Faith’

Faith had been a machine. Four different singles off it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, including “Monkey”. So the follow-up could have been more of the same. It wasn’t. Ten tracks, mostly acoustic, and a lot quieter than anything on the record before it.

The songs still worked. Lead single “Praying for Time” went to No. 1 in the U.S., his seventh American chart-topper. It was also the last solo single of his career to get there.

He Left Himself Out of His Own Video

Then came “Freedom! ’90,” and Michael is not in it. He gave the whole video to five models at the height of the supermodel era: Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Tatjana Patitz, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington, with David Fincher directing. They mouthed his words. He never showed up.

He was at the peak of his fame when he made that call, and already in a fight with his record company.

Then It Went to Court

American sales came in soft, and the argument stopped being about music. In October 1992, Michael sued Sony over an eight-album, 15-year contract he called “professional slavery,” saying it was an unlawful restraint of trade. Justice Jonathan Parker ruled for Sony on June 1, 1994.

He made a record to prove he was not a product. It took four years to find out the contract disagreed.

For almost four decades, The Terminator stood as the only Arnold Schwarzenegger movie to hold a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Even at 90%, it sits as one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

Rotten Tomatoes placed it in #52 on the list of 150 most essential sci-fi movies everyone should watch. This is one of those cases where the sequel is “better,” with Terminator 2: Judgment Day ranking in No. 50, but you do need to watch both movies in order to fully appreciate the story.

Setin 1984, Schwazenager’s titular character is sent from the year 2029 to kill Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton. It was a story that came out of a fever dream, and one that Cameron sold the rights for just $1 with the condition that he got to make it.

When speaking about its creation, Cameron said in a 2024 interview, “Terminator was my first film, and it’s near and dear for that reason. But I think I can look at it pretty objectively now as a creature of its time, both in terms of how it sits in the zeitgeist of that moment, and also how it sits in my career as a first effort. I don’t think of it as some holy grail, that’s for sure. I look at it now and there’s parts of it that are pretty cringeworthy, and parts of it that are like, yeah, we did pretty well for the resources we had available.”

On top of that, the role wasn’t originally set to go to the Austrian actor, with the studio wanting O.J. Simpson to take on the role, with Schwarzenegger taking on the role of Kyle Reese, a role he was interested in. James Cameron objected to that, believing that Simpson came across as “too nice,” making him unbelievable as a ruthless killer. It’s hard to imagine what the movie would have been like in the end, especially considering there’s only one we can imagine saying “I’ll be back” now.

Despite the studio backing, the budget was tiny. The idea of making the metal endoskeleton of the cyborg was wild, and instead, plastic, plaster, and styrofoam were all painted and used. Yes, it was a styrofoam head that was crushed during the movie!

For almost four decades, the movie held a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, and then in late 2024, everything changed. The site expanded its database, bringing in legacy archive reviews from the 1980s, leading to older negative reviews making their way into the system. By adding those reviews, it pulled the rating down to 90%.

Coincidentally, this is the same rating that the sequel, Judgment Day, holds. The sequel would see Schwarzenegger’s character become the protagonist, returning from the future to prevent another cyborg from killing the Connor family. So, make sure you make it a full movie night to capture both parts of The Terminator story.

For some people, supernatural stories about vampires and witches only come around October and Halloween. But for a writer like Anne Rice, those tales were her bread and butter—not just a fall-time thing—making her the well-known Gothic writer she is today. As EBSCO reported, she was “influential” and is known for her Gothic fiction as well as a slew of other stories, ranging from retellings of Catholic Bible stories to erotica. And our quote of the day comes from Franz Kafka‘s influence on Rice, and how Kafka inspired her to be herself and not reject her uniqueness.

Speaking of being unique, Rice came into this world with an unconventional streak right off the bat; she was born on Oct. 4, 1941, with the name Howard Allen O’Brien, after her father, per Britannica. She did, understandably, hate that first name and chose “Anne” on her first day of school in her hometown of New Orleans, LA. Rice came from a family who loved to spin tales; it was a hobby for her father (which rubbed off on Rice and her sisters), and her mother loved to tell stories that involved supernatural and fantastical elements, per EBSCO.

From her upbringing to her place of birth, Rice was surrounded by inspiration to create one of the most well-known vampire novels of all time. According to Britannica, Rice wrote Interview with the Vampire in a little over a month (five weeks), and it was published in 1976. 

Her experience with grief and death also influenced her writing; Rice’s mother died when she was a young teenager, and her daughter, Michele, died of leukemia at only five years old, which inspired the character of Claudia, a child who becomes a vampire and gains eternal life. As Rice told The New York Times in 1988, the story wasn’t make-believe for her: “For the first time, I was able to describe my reality, the dark, gothic influence on my childhood… My childhood came to life for me.”

This well-known book went on to become a best-selling series called the Vampire Chronicles, which consisted of 13 books. Famously, the first novel inspired the 1994 Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt film of the same name, as well as the AMC series. Rice died in 2021, but her legacy still lives on today.

Quote of the Day by Anne Rice

“Don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to make it logical; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly.”

This statement was written by Anne Rice in the foreword she penned for a 1995 collection of Franz Kafka’s stories that included The Metamorphosis and In the Penal Colony.

Throughout the foreword, Rice wrote about how Kafka’s surreal, out-there, sometimes-nightmarish stories inspired her. In the paragraph in which she writes this line, she calls the German-language Czech writer a “model” for her and “a continuing inspiration.” She said:

“Not only did he exhibit an irrepressible originality—who else would think of things like this!—he seemed to say that only in one’s most personal language can the crucial tales of a writer be told. Don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to make it logical; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly. Only if you do that can you hope to make the reader feel a particle of what you, the writer, have known and feel compelled to share.”

As Quote Investigator reported, many people misattribute this quote to Kafka. It’s most likely due to where it originated and also because Rice is detailing a concept or idea that was shaped by Kafka’s writing.

Deeper Meaning of Anne Rice’s Quote—Embrace Your Uniqueness

Vampire novels aren’t new, and Anne Rice didn’t invent them. However, it does take a lot of imagination and a desire to be true to writing something a little weird in order to create something as good and groundbreaking as Interview with the Vampire. Becoming a Gothic writer in the ‘70s is no small feat, nor is it conventional, so it makes sense that Rice was inspired by Kafka’s strong sense of his visionary talent and resolve in his uniqueness.

As Rice says, Kafka’s work showed he didn’t care about conformity or what was “normal”; he forged his own path, even inspiring his own adjective based on his stories. He also died relatively unknown in 1924, with a lot of his work published after the fact. So he was writing for himself and doing it because he was passionate, not for fame or fortune. Rice’s quote is a sentiment to what she took from his life and work: don’t conform, your writing doesn’t need to “make sense” and don’t let others shrink you down.

Taking the quote at face value without the Kafka influence, Rice is still urging readers to be themselves. Don’t “water” yourself down to be more digestible to others. Don’t make yourself fit into some box society has carved out for you so you’re more palatable. Don’t ever allow yourself to contort into something you’re not, just for societal consumption. 

She says to “follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly,” meaning to be unabashedly you. Love what you love, even if it’s not “cool” or popular. Be into your niche—maybe weird—hyperfixations, hobbies or likes. When you are entirely yourself, living and creating authentically, you rid yourself of the burden of caring what others think, and it frees you up for immense joy and happiness. All the things you can do and make when you’re free are endless.

The 2024 limited series One Day has been ranked the No. 1 most heartbreaking Netflix show of all time, putting the British romantic drama above eight other emotionally heavy series on the streaming platform.

Based on David Nicholls’ acclaimed 2009 novel, One Day follows Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew as their lives continue to cross over nearly two decades. Played by Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall, the pair begin as friends after meeting at their university graduation and continue to find their way back to each other at different points in their lives.

Collider places One Day at the top because of its story about love, friendship, missed chances, grief and the unpredictable turns of life. The series was described as an emotionally weighty and realistic portrayal of love, with its story eventually becoming a deeply painful watch.

One Day is built around a simple idea. Emma and Dexter meet on July 15, 1988, after graduating from the University of Edinburgh. Each episode then returns to the same date in another year, allowing viewers to see how their friendship, careers, relationships and personal struggles change over time.

The 14-episode limited series follows the pair from their younger years into adulthood. Dexter comes from a privileged family and becomes a television presenter, while Emma works toward becoming a writer after spending time as a teacher.

They become close friends, drift apart, reconnect and face new problems as they grow older. Their feelings for each other remain an important part of the story even when their lives take different paths.

The Guardian praised the format for turning the 20-year love story into 14 episodes, with each installment showing another stage of Emma and Dexter’s lives. The review described the series as a story about the “poetry of day-to-day life and the power of nostalgia.”

That structure also gives the characters room to grow. Variety described the series as a story about friendship, grief and expectations, while noting how the show explores the painful parts of being a young adult. Family members die, careers change, friendships are tested and romantic relationships become more complicated.

The series also spends time showing the mistakes made by both main characters. Dexter’s confidence and privileged background affect the way he treats people around him, while Emma struggles when her plans for her life do not happen as expected.

Rather than making their journey a simple fairy tale, One Day shows how people can change over time and how decisions can affect relationships years later.

The performances from Mod and Woodall were also important to the series’ reception. Roger Ebert’s review praised the two leads, describing Woodall as “perfectly cast” and Mod as “winningly” portraying Emma.

The review also noted that the series gives viewers more time with Emma and Dexter than the 2011 movie adaptation starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. That longer format allows the audience to see the characters as they grow, make mistakes and deal with the consequences of their choices.

Although One Day is often described as a romantic drama, its story is also centered on friendship. Emma and Dexter do not simply spend the series trying to become a couple. 

The series premiered on Netflix on Feb. 8, 2024. It was also reported as the most-watched series globally during the week of Feb. 12, with 9.9 million views.

Its emotional impact is closely tied to the way the story handles loss. Without relying only on romance, One Day shows how quickly life can change and how people may not get the future they expect.

It seems like stores all around us began putting out Halloween decor weeks ago.

For now, fast-casual restaurant chain known as Culver’s just unveiled a unique offering as autumn approaches. On Wednesday, September 2, the company debuted its Oreo Reese’s Cheesecake Concrete Mixer, which blends the beloved sandwich cookies and peanut butter cups into its frozen custard base as part of a broader fall dessert rollout.

Culver’s also took to social media to promote its new mashup of flavors. “NEW OREO® REESE’S Cheesecake is here and it’s calling your name,” reads the caption of its Wednesday Instagram post. See below.

Fans have since commented on the reel to voice their excitement for the new release. “You’re the best to ever do it Culver’s,” wrote one Instagram user, while another person commented, “The big C always delivers.”

For those not familiar, Culver’s dates back to 1984 and was originally called “Culver’s Frozen Custard and ButterBurgers.” According to the chain’s website, the first ButterBurgers were actually made with an ice cream scoop. More specifically, fresh beef was “scooped” into perfect portions and then pressed into the grill to achieve that sear fans know and love.

In other restaurant news, a similar type of company just brought back one of its beloved desserts nationwide for a limited time. Fans of Zaxbys’ NERDS Strawberry Milkshake can grab one from their nearest location right now, as the menu item relaunched August 31.

The Nerds shake blends Zaxbys hand-spun Strawberry Milkshake with the candy’s signature crunch for an “unexpected sweet-and-tart twist,” per the chain’s recent news release. It’s also topped with Nerds Gummy Clusters candy, whipped cream, Rainbow Nerds candy and a Maraschino cherry.

Frontman Brandon Flowers reportedly added: “We’re not overly anxious about Dire Straits, though. We’re not ashamed of covering ‘Romeo And Juliet,’ either. It’s one of the finest songs ever. Brilliant melodies.”

Ariana Grande has hit a major milestone as the pop star wraps up her Eternal Sunshine Tour.

As the award-winning singer concluded the 41-show run, the tour earnings reportedly surpassed the $100 million mark.

In a report cited by Billboard Boxscore, the global tour grossed a whopping $107.9 million from 638,000 tickets sold.

Despite her recent tour being the shortest of her previous three headlining tours, it was more financially successful on a per-show basis.

Grande’s Sweetener World Tour in 2019, which featured 101 shows, earned $146.4 million overall and averaged $1.5 million per show.

By comparison, the Eternal Sunshine Tour averaged $2.6 million per show, marking a 74% increase in revenue per concert.

In addition, Grande’s North American leg amassed $80.2 million from 459,000 tickets sold, making it the highest-grossing tour leg of her career.

The Wicked star’s headlining run kicked off in June, with the first leg covering mainly North American locations.

The pop star performed her hits over 28 shows in the U.S. across major hubs like Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Atlanta and more, along with three shows in Canada.

For the second leg, Grande had 10 shows in the U.K. exclusively at The O2 Arena in London.

During her final tour show, she couldn’t help but feel emotional as she expressed her deep gratitude to fans for their support.

“I just want to say thank you so much,” she said in front of the massive audience. “This has been such an extraordinary experience. Thank you for 10 beautiful London shows and for 41 incredible Eternal Sunshine tour shows.”

Moreover, she described it as “one of the most beautiful, extraordinary experiences” of her life.

Concluding her heartfelt message to her fans, Grande acknowledged the effort everyone put into the tour.

Netflix is continuing to shoot its shot in the unscripted space.

The streaming giant just scooped up yet another reality show, and this time it’s a so-called “social experiment series” with the working title Playing With Matches, Deadline reports.

It’s said to follow a group of couples competing in a game of romantic deception: Conceal their own relationship while exposing everyone else’s. Deadline also reported on Wednesday, September 2 that the couples — living together in a house, Big Brother-style — must try and figure out who is in a relationship while keeping their own romantic entanglements secret, in order to win.

Playing with Matches comes from British production company Mettlemouse, founded by Sarah Tyekiff — who previously produced Love Island U.K. Matches reportedly marks the biggest commission for the company to date.

The upcoming reality show is also one of a number of new Netflix unscripted greenlights Deadline has reported on. Another buzzy project is the Jersey-set The Leftovers (another working title), which is being made by Jersey Shore producer SallyAnn Salsano and her 495 Productions.

Netflix Is Also Renewing Unscripted Offerings

Late last month, the streamer announced that a number of its current reality shows are getting another season. Being Gordon Ramsay, which premiered on Netflix earlier this year and was just renewed for a second season, Deadline reported at the time. Other unscripted renewals include season 9 of Formula 1: Drive to Survive and season 4 of Love Is Blind: UK.

Here’s Netflix’s official synopsis of Ramsay’s reality show: “Follow celeb chef Gordon Ramsay behind the scenes as he juggles family life, global empire and his biggest launch yet in this all-you-can-eat documentary.”

As soon as the full Dancing With the Stars season 35 cast was unveiled on Wednesday, September 2, fans rushed to social media to call out multiple casting decisions.

The biggest complaint? Countless fans were shocked that show producers not only cast two contestants with extensive dance backgrounds, but paired them with two of the shows most beloved and experienced pros.

The Rookie actress Jenna Dewan, who was a backup dancer for Janet Jackson in the early 2000s, has been paired with DWTS pro Val Chmerkovskiy, who has won the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy three of the 20 seasons he’s competed on. Meanwhile, Glee alum Harry Shum Jr. will dance with two-time Mirrorball winner Jenna Johnson, who’s married to Chmerkovskiy.

One of the fans who flooded Instagram with reactions quipped, “So the mirror ball is going to (their) house no matter how this plays out 🥴.”

The pushback over Dewan joining the cast has been especially loud, with one fan drawing nearly 2,500 likes on a comment that said, “I love Jenna but how is that even legal lol?! Don’t get me wrong I’m going to absolutely enjoy watching her but she was literally a professional dancer cast in a movie about dancing with a partner 🙃🥰”

“They put her with val that’s diabolical, knowing how good she is I can’t wait!” someone else quipped.

Another lamented, “Putting Val with Jenna is wrong!!!! She’s a dancer and Harry is a dancer too omggg this is wild!!!!”

Dewan, who co-starred in the popular 2006 dance movie Step Up with Channing Tatum, responded to the backlash by arguing that although she’s been a professional dancer, her style is very different than ballroom dancing.

“Let’s be clear,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s two different languages. There’s parts of my dance training that’s helpful, obviously. I’ve learned choreography, I can perform, but there is a certain sense of unlearning for me. It’s a new technique, brand new technique. It almost threw me off initially because I had to unlearn a lot of — I don’t want to say bad habits — but just habits of the style that I’m used to.”

Other fans pointed out that Shum could also have an unfair advantage with his background. One fan drew over 3,200 likes on her Instagram comment, which said, “Harry and Jenna is just unfair LMAO he graduated from glee boot camp cmon now💀”

But Shum also defended his fancy footwork after the GMA cast reveal, telling People, “I think everyone’s idea is like, ‘Oh, you dance, so you should be able to dance anything.’ And I mean, that’s just not true. There are hundreds of styles, not dozens, hundreds all over the world.”

Meanwhile, someone else joked of Julia Stiles‘ casting, referencing the 2001 romance film Save the Last Dance: “I don’t think it’s fair for the rest of the cast, Julia Stiles went to Juilliard 💀.”

Despite some backlash, plenty of celebrities were already rooting for Team Dewan.

Rumer Willis wrote, “You know this is my favorite team already!!!” as JoAnna Garcia Swisher added, “This is going to be so amazing!!!!”

Elizabeth Berkley chimed in, “Cannot wait to see your MAGIC🙌,” while Odette Annable wrote, “Babe!!!!! I smell a 🏆🪩!!!!!” and hairstylist Riawna Capri added, “Oh s—! Yall are winning. 100%.”

DWTS season 35 premieres kicks off on back-to-back nights, on Tuesday, September 25 and Wednesday, September 16, at 8 p.m. ET both nights.
