Friedrich Nietzsche's Quote on Persevering Through Hard Times Still Resonates Today

Tue, 07/14/2026 - 2:45am

One of the most famous philosophers in history came about in the 19th century: Friedrich Nietzsche. He was a German classical scholar, cultural critic, writer and philosopher who “became one of the most influential of all modern thinkers,” per Britannica

He’s most well known for his work critiquing traditional European religion and morality, famously saying “God is dead" and predicting the “dissolution of traditional religion and metaphysics,” according to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. And even though he’s the philosopher most people associate nihilism with, our quote of the day by Nietzsche is a hopeful and encouraging one about perseverance.

Born in Prussia (now Germany) in 1844, Nietzsche grew up in a very Lutheran family; Britannica reported that his paternal grandfather published books that defended Protestantism, which is in contrast with what Nietzsche ended up critiquing. He went on to study theology and classical philology at the University of Bonn in 1864, and transferred to the University of Leipzig in 1865. One of his professors there recommended him so strongly to teach at the University of Basel that Nietzsche was granted a doctorate without having to take the corresponding exam or write a dissertation so that he could become a professor of classical philology there.

He did most of his writing and core work in the 1870s and 1880s, according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. They also reported that Nietzsche’s criticisms exposed “false consciousness infecting people’s received ideas." Because of this, he is credited with not only influencing late modern thinkers such as Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx, but also how we think today, according to the BBC

Nietzsche died in 1900, and even though his sister tainted his legacy for a while because of what she associated his work with (fascism and Nazism), that deception was uncovered, and what he truly stands for is now remembered—which is decidedly very against “nationalism, antisemitism and power politics,” per Britannica.

Again, even though he’s associated with nihilism—the belief that nothing really matters because nothing is guaranteed or known—he has a lot of inspiring quotes (since his work was a bit more nuanced than just one concept). And today’s quote highlights his encouraging words of determination to get through hard times.

Quote of the Day by Friedrich Nietzsche

CanvaPro/Parade

“He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how.”

A version of this quote appears in Twilight of the Idols (also known by its longer title Twilight of the Idols, or, How to Philosophize with a Hammer), first published in 1889. It’s basically a comprehensive view of Nietzsche’s philosophy and “mature ideas.”

There are many different translations of this quote, since it was originally written in Nietzsche’s native German. As Quote Investigator reported, the Thomas Common translation in 1896 read:

“When one has one’s wherefore of life, one gets along with almost every how.—Man does not strive after happiness; the Englishman only does so.”

The 1911 Anthony M. Ludovici translation says:

“If a man knows the wherefore of his existence, then the manner of it can take care of itself. Man does not aspire to happiness; only the Englishman does that.”

But it’s Viktor Frankl, a German psychotherapist, whose 1946 book gave us the most popular translation we have today (aka our quote of the day). In his popular book, Man’s Search for Meaning, which was also originally published in German and translated by Ilse Lasch, he wrote:

“As we said before, any attempt to restore a man’s inner strength in the camp had first to succeed in showing him some future goal. Nietzsche’s words, ‘He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how,’ could be the guiding motto for all psychotherapeutic and psychohygienic efforts regarding prisoners.”

Deeper Meaning of Friedrich Nietzsche’s Quote—Perseverance Through Tough Times

The great thing about a quote like this one is that it’s short and simple, yet still packs a punch with its meaning.

Taking just the sentence we highlighted today, Nietzsche is saying that as long as you have a “why” to your life—a purpose or reason that you do the things you do, such as aspirations, a need to protect or provide for family or partners, etc.—you’ll always figure out “how” to get through things. If you have a reason to get up in the morning, then even when tough times come your way, you’ll find a way to get out or get through it.

Kind of like the age-old adage, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” if there is a power behind your actions and meaning to what you’re doing, you will always persevere. It won’t be easy, of course, and it won’t be over fast (depending on what it is you’re going through), but just know it’ll pass. And you’ll come out stronger (and sometimes better for it) on the other side.

Nietzsche’s quote is the kind that gives you hope and reminds you to stay the course you’ve chosen in life.

If you're looking for a piece that feels special without the designer price tag, the Apsvo Gold-Plated Initial Charm Bracelet is worth a look. Right now, it's on sale for 87% off at Walmart, bringing the price down from $110 to just $14.

Measuring 7 inches long and 4 millimeters wide, the bracelet features a secure loopback clasp that's designed for easy wear. An intricate hollow construction helps keep it lightweight and comfortable, while the cubic zirconia-accented initial adds just the right amount of sparkle.

One of the details that helps this bracelet stand out is its watch-strap-inspired silhouette. It feels more substantial and eye-catching than a traditional tennis bracelet while still maintaining an elegant, everyday look. The result is a piece that's bold enough to make a statement but refined enough for daily wear.

Its versatility is a major selling point. The bracelet works just as well with casual daytime outfits as it does with dressier evening looks. New Moon Manifestation: How to Set Intentions and Attract What You Desire

Tue, 07/14/2026 - 1:22am

New moons symbolize fresh starts in astrology. For those interested in manifestation—the practice of turning intentions, desires, and ideas into reality—this lunar phase is often seen as a powerful time to reflect, set goals, perform rituals, and welcome new possibilities. Parade spoke with professional astrologer and host of the Astrology Table podcast on Rogue Media Network, Rachel Ruth Tate, to explore why new moons are considered such an important moment for intention-setting.

What makes the New Moon such a powerful time for manifestation in astrology?

When a new moon arrives, the lunar cycle begins again. Occurring approximately once a month, each new moon offers an opportunity to embrace “clean slate” energy and focus on what you want to cultivate moving forward. “The English word ‘month’ is literally derived from the word ‘moon’—making the lunar cycle a fundamental basis of time as we know it!” Tate explains. “We can think of the New Moon as a powerful time to plant seeds and form intentions that will later come to full fruition. You can only reap what you first sow!”

RELATED: The Ultimate Guide to Every New & Full Moon in 2026

How should someone actually set intentions during a New Moon so they feel clear and aligned?

There’s no single right way to set new moon intentions. The most important thing is focusing on what genuinely feels meaningful to you and where your intuition is guiding you. For example, if you’re hoping to bring more gratitude into your relationships, rather than striving for perfection, an intention like “I’m embracing the present moment with those I love” can help foster clarity and awareness. Tate agrees that “concentrating energy and awareness around a point of focus of your choosing provides fuel and direction for future growth” when working with new moon intentions.

Does the zodiac sign of each New Moon change what we should be manifesting? If so, how?

To truly understand a new moon’s energy, it can be helpful to look at the zodiac sign in which it occurs. Each sign carries its own symbolism and themes, which can provide insight into the areas of life that may be calling for attention. For example, a new moon in Aries may inspire intentions around courage, independence, and taking initiative, while a new moon in Libra may encourage focus on balance, harmony, and relationships. By reflecting on the archetypes associated with each zodiac sign, we can create intentions that feel more aligned with the energy of the moment.

How long should you work with New Moon intentions, and what does "follow-through" look like energetically?

Manifesting with the new moon isn’t only about setting an intention in a single moment—it can become an ongoing process of reflection, action, and growth. “A syzygy, or lunar cycle, refers to the two-week period following a new moon. This time offers an opportunity to set initial intentions, take inspired action, and begin working toward short-term goals,” Tate says. Additionally, the six-month period between a new moon and a full moon in the same zodiac sign can offer a longer window to reflect on themes associated with that sign and to watch intentions develop over time.

Sheriff Issues Rare Warning in Nancy Guthrie Investigation

Tue, 07/14/2026 - 12:07am

While the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie nears the six-month mark, the Pima County Sheriff's Department shared a rare update with the public.

"The Pima County Sheriff's Department is aware of posts circulating about the Guthrie investigation that include a QR code requesting money," PCSD shared via Instagram on Monday, July 13. "PCSD will never ask for money related to this case, or any investigation."

The statement continued, "Please do not send money to people you do not know or scan QR codes requesting payment. If you see one of these posts, ignore ir and report it. Stay alert and help spread the word."

While it's unclear who is behind the apparent false reports, the latest development marks a rare update from the sheriff's office.

Guthrie, 84, went missing from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the early morning hours of February 1. She was last seen the night before during a family dinner at her daughter Annie's home.

PCSD has been working closely with the FBI's Phoenix division on the case.

While the Sheriff's Department is begging the public to remain vigilant and not to fall for scammers, they previously released a QR code for people to submit tips to help the investigation.

“The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is urgently requesting your assistance in locating Nancy Guthrie, 84, who last seen on the evening of January 31, 2026, at her residence near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue,” the PCSD wrote in a message on the portal. “If you have any information, please contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520)-351-4900, 88-Crime, or use the attached QR code to submit any piece of information that you feel may be helpful.”

Founding Member of Legendary ’90s Metal Band Dead at 62

Mon, 07/13/2026 - 11:55pm

Mike Browning, the drummer and vocalist who helped start the influential death metal band Morbid Angel, has died at the age of 62.

Browning passed away on Monday. News of his death was confirmed by Decibel Magazine and later acknowledged by Profound Lore Records, the label behind releases from his later band, Nocturnus AD, per Metal Injection.

The record label shared a tribute on social media, writing: "RIP death metal legend/sci-fi death metal godfather Mike Browning of NOCTURNUS/NOCTURNUS AD. Journey beyond the gateway to the outer void!"

Morbid Angel also honored their former bandmate and co-founder with a message posted on Instagram alongside an old photo of Browning.

"R.I.P Mike, thanks for helping making all this happen. Our condolences to his family & especially his daughter."

Browning is survived by his teenage daughter.

View this post on Instagram Mike Browning Helped Shape Early Death Metal History

Born Michael George Browning on May 26, 1964, in Tampa, Florida, Browning began playing drums when he was 13 years old. His musical influences included Black Sabbath, Slayer, Angel Witch, Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost.

In 1983, Browning joined forces with guitarist Trey Azagthoth to form Morbid Angel, a group that would later become one of the most important names in death metal.

The band became known for combining guttural vocals, blast beats and fast, aggressive songwriting at a time when those sounds were still new to heavy music.

Browning remained with Morbid Angel until the mid-1980s and appeared on several early demos. He also performed on the recordings for "Abominations Of Desolation," which had originally been planned as the band's debut album.

Although the album was recorded in 1986, it was not officially released until 1991, years after Browning had already left the group.

His drumming and vocals on those recordings became an important part of the band's early legacy and helped influence generations of extreme metal musicians that followed.

Nocturnus Founder Built a Legacy Beyond Morbid Angel

After leaving Morbid Angel, Browning continued working in the growing Florida death metal scene. He spent time with Incubus and Acheron before launching Nocturnus in 1987.

The band quickly stood out from many of its peers by mixing technical death metal with keyboards and science fiction themes, helping create a sound that was unique within the genre.

Browning served as drummer and vocalist on Nocturnus's 1990 album The Key and later played drums on "Thresholds" before leaving the band in 1993. He later worked with projects including After Death, Devine Essence and Wolf and Hawk.

In 2008, Browning released a solo album titled Mike Browning's Inner Workings – Trancemissions.

Years later, he returned to the music scene with Nocturnus AD, a continuation of his earlier work.

The band released "Paradox" in 2019 and followed it with "Unicursal" in 2024 through Profound Lore Records. Both albums were well received by fans of progressive and science fiction-inspired death metal.

Outside music, Browning was known for his interests in medieval weapons, Ancient Egyptian artifacts, muscle cars and 3D graphic design.

Ariana Grande Seemingly Confirms Rekindled Romance with Ex Ricky Alvarez

Mon, 07/13/2026 - 11:42pm

Is Ariana Grande back together with her ex-boyfriend Ricky Alvarez?

Alvarez, who used to be one of Grande's backup dancers, and the singer were first romantically linked from 2015 to 2016. Romance rumors began swirling again earlier this month after Grande was spotted spending Fourth of July weekend with Alvarez in Florida.

Now, Grande has seemingly confirmed the rumors during the Monday, July 13, performance of her eternal sunshine tour in Brooklyn, New York.

In a video posted to Reddit, while singing the verse in "thank u, next" where she famously names all of her exes, Grande changed the lyrics about Alvarez from, "Wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh," to, "Wrote some songs about Ricky, we always find our way back," prompting the audience to erupt in cheers.

The apparent rekindled relationship comes just one month after Grande's breakup with Wicked co-star Ethan Slater went public.

At the time, sources told TMZ that the couple amicably broke up several months prior, and that Grande and Slater remain friends who are “very supportive” of one another. According to the outlet, the pair gave the decision “careful consideration” before ultimately deciding to end their relationship.

Grande’s upcoming album, Petal, set for release on July 31, is reportedly not about her relationship with Slater or their breakup.

Grande and Slater first met while filming Wicked in 2022, and news of their relationship became public in July 2023. At the time, the couple faced intense public scrutiny, as both had recently separated from their respective spouses, Dalton Gomez and Lilly Jay. Slater also shares a 3-year-old son with Jay.

However, sources close to the pair told TMZ back in 2023 that they did not begin dating until after both marriages had ended.

Neither Grande nor Slater has publicly commented on the breakup.

Country Star, With No. 1 Hit Song Lasting 13 Weeks, Makes Billboard Chart History

Mon, 07/13/2026 - 11:32pm

Ella Langley continues her remarkable rise in country music as her hit single “Choosin’ Texas” holds the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for a 13th week, placing the Alabama native in elite chart company and setting multiple records in the process.

The song, which first reached the top of the all-genre chart in February, has now become one of only five songs by women without male-billed acts to spend at least 13 weeks at No. 1 in Billboard Hot 100 history.

Among female-led songs, only Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” and Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” have matched or exceeded that milestone.

More importantly for country music, “Choosin’ Texas” is the only song from an artist primarily known for country music to reach the 13-week mark on the Hot 100 under those conditions.

The achievement also makes the song the first non-holiday release to join that exclusive group since Carey’s “We Belong Together” accomplished the feat in 2005.

Langley’s chart success stretches far beyond one single. This week, she occupies three of the top four positions on the Billboard Hot 100, further cementing 2026 as a career-defining year for the singer-songwriter.

“Choosin’ Texas” remains at No. 1, while “Be Her” stays at its peak position of No. 3. Meanwhile, her collaboration with Morgan Wallen, “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” climbs from No. 6 to No. 4, giving Langley an extraordinary presence near the top of the chart.

Ella Langley Makes Billboard Chart History

With three songs inside the Hot 100's top four positions, Langley has reached a milestone no woman has ever achieved with country songs.

She is now the first female artist in history to place three country songs inside the top four of the Billboard Hot 100 during the same week.

The feat is rare across all genres as well. Langley becomes only the ninth artist ever to hold three of the top four positions on the chart simultaneously, joining a select group of stars that includes The Beatles, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Kendrick Lamar, Morgan Wallen, Sabrina Carpenter and 21 Savage.

Her run adds to an already historic year.

Earlier in 2026, Langley's sophomore album Dandelion debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 after selling 169,000 equivalent album units during its opening week in the United States.

The project also launched atop the Top Album Sales, Top Streaming Albums and Top Country Albums charts.

At the same time, her debut album Hungover has continued climbing on multiple Billboard rankings, recently reaching a new peak on the Top Streaming Albums chart while maintaining strong performance on country charts.

Langley also made history at the 2026 Academy of Country Music Awards in May, where she collected seven wins in a single year, setting a new record for the ceremony. The previous mark of six victories had been shared by Faith Hill, Garth Brooks and Chris Stapleton.

Ella Langley Reacts to Historic No. 1 Success

Despite the growing list of achievements, Langley appeared just as surprised as fans by the latest Billboard milestone.

After learning that “Choosin’ Texas” had extended its reign to 13 weeks atop the Hot 100, she shared a screenshot of the chart on her Instagram Story.

— mydzn (@MadelaineDizon) July 14, 2026

The singer simply wrote, "Unreal" alongside crying and mind-blown emojis.

The reaction reflected the scale of the accomplishment. According to Billboard data, “Choosin’ Texas” recorded 25.1 million official streams, 50.8 million radio airplay impressions and 7,000 units sold during its latest tracking week.

The song has also dominated beyond the Hot 100. It continues to lead both the Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales charts and recently tied Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” for the ninth-longest run at No. 1 in Digital Song Sales chart history with 11 weeks on top.

With momentum still strong, industry observers will now watch whether “Choosin’ Texas” can reach a 14th week at No. 1, which would allow Langley to tie Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” for the second-longest-running No. 1 hit by a woman in Billboard Hot 100 history.

For now, Langley has already secured her place in the record books.

And with three songs dominating the top of America's biggest chart at once, the country star's breakthrough year shows no signs of slowing down.

Bachelor Nation's Joe Amabile Reveals He's Undergoing Surgery for Brain Tumor

Mon, 07/13/2026 - 11:20pm

Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise star Joe Amabile has a brain tumor.

In a video shared to Instagram on Monday, July 13, the reality star, 40, shared that his doctors found what appears to be an early-stage brain tumor after he underwent a Prenuvo scan, or a proactive, full-body MRI.

“So a little medical update. I didn’t share my Prenuvo results because they ended up finding a lesion in my brain,” Amabile said in the video. “So then I had to go get a brain MRI, and there was a blueberry-sized lesion in my brain that looks to be a glioma, which is a tumor.”

Amabile then shared that he will undergo brain surgery in two weeks to remove the lesion and determine if it's cancerous or not.

“So I now need to get brain surgery to get it removed and get it tested, and then we’re gonna go from there,” Amabile continued. “So it’s been a wild couple weeks. Definitely wasn’t expecting this.”

“I think it’s one of those things where you’re like, ‘Oh, something like this never happened to me,’ and here I am,” he added. “They say it’s really early stages. I hope they are able to get it all, and I’m fine. But I will keep you updated.”

In the post's caption, Amabile revealed more details about his upcoming procedure.

“This past month has been a lot of ups and downs to say the least,” he wrote. “After multiple scans and MRIs I have what looks to be an early stage brain tumor. In two weeks I’ll be undergoing a craniotomy to have it removed — yeah brain surgery — @memorialsloankettering.”

“I’m doing my best to stay positive during this time and am lucky to have a lot of support from family and friends ❤️,” he added.

Amabile is married to fellow Bachelor alum Serena Pitt, whom he met on season 7 of Bachelor in Paradise in 2021. They first married in an intimate courthouse ceremony in New York City in October 2022 before celebrating with a more formal wedding in Charleston, South Carolina, the following year.

1958 Timeless Classic, Reimagined by a 13-Year-Old, Ranked Among ‘Best Country Songs of All Time’

Mon, 07/13/2026 - 11:20pm

LeAnn Rimes was only 13 years old when she released her version of “Blue.” The classic country standard not only catapulted her to superstardom, but it also showcased her powerhouse vocals and delicate yodeling that stood out in the country genre and drew comparisons to Patsy Cline

Written by Bill Mack, who released the song first in 1958, “Blue” tackles the story of someone dealing with incredible loneliness in the aftermath of a breakup. The narrator expresses overwhelming sadness as they question why their former lover isn’t missing them in the same way. Despite its emotionally complex subject matter, Rimes’ rendition of “Blue” demonstrated a vocal and a maturity that was well beyond her years.

Interestingly, Rimes actually recorded the song twice.

An earlier version of the track had her laying down vocals in the studio at the tender age of 11. That take belongs on her independent album, All That. Rimes’ re-recording of “Blue” appears on her No. 1 debut major label album of the same name, released in July 1996.

A breakthrough hit, the track reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and also peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. But what many folks may not know is that the earlier version of “Blue” is the one fans have become most familiar with, as reported by American Songwriter.

“They actually released the wrong version,” Rimes previously told the outlet. “The one you’ve been hearing forever is me as an 11-year-old.”

Regardless, “Blue” has continued to be a beloved track by fans far and wide as well as by industry insiders. In 2025, Rimes’ version of “Blue” ranked at No. 99 on Billboard’s ‘100 Best Country Songs of All Time’ list.

Aside from “Blue,” LeAnn Rimes is known for hits like “How Do I Live,” “Can’t Fight the Moonlight,” “One Way Ticket (Because I Can),” and others.

36 Years Ago Today, One of the Saddest Country Songs Ever Reached No. 1

Mon, 07/13/2026 - 11:00pm

When Garth Brooks released "The Dance" in 1990, few could have predicted the lasting impact the song would have on country music or on Brooks', 64, career.

On July 14, 1990, "The Dance" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, becoming Brooks' third chart-topping hit and cementing what many fans still consider his signature song.

Written by songwriter Tony Arata, "The Dance" appeared on Brooks' self-titled debut album and quickly stood out for its emotional lyrics about love, loss and embracing life's journey despite heartbreak. While many listeners interpreted the song as a love ballad, Brooks has often said its message is much broader.

"I've always felt 'The Dance' was about life," Brooks said in past interviews, explaining that the song's meaning extends beyond romance to include taking risks, pursuing dreams and accepting that pain is often inseparable from life's greatest moments.

The song's unforgettable chorus—

"I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance."

—has resonated with generations of listeners and has been used to mark everything from weddings and graduations to memorial services.

Over the years, Brooks has repeatedly described "The Dance" as one of the most important recordings of his career. In the 2019Garth Brooks: The Road I'm On documentary, he called it the defining song of his catalog and said that if he were remembered for only one recording, he hoped it would be "The Dance."

The ballad has also earned widespread critical acclaim. In 2016, Rolling Stone ranked it among the 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time, praising its emotional depth and lasting influence.

One of Cinema's Greatest Unsung Heroes Would Have Been 100 Today

Mon, 07/13/2026 - 11:00pm

Perhaps no other actor sports a filmography as illustrious as that of the incomparable Harry Dean Stanton. An actor that you surely have seen before yet may not know his name, he is one of the most underappreciated and unsung actors in all of cinema. Having collaborated with some of the greatest filmmakers of all time including directors like David Lynch, Ridley Scott, John Carpenter, Wim Wenders, and Martin Scorsese, he's an actor who quietly worked his way into the fabric of film history with a breadth of humanity many couldn't understand.

Stanton passed away in 2017 at the age of 91, and with him one of the greatest careers in Hollywood was gone. He was someone who up until recently I wasn't super conscious of. Little did I know, I had grown up with him. My first film I would have seen him in is the fantastic animated filmRango when I was about 5 or 6 years old, and throughout my childhood I would see him in films like The Avengers and Alien. That leads me to today where he is an integral part of some of my favorite stories ever.

In honor of 100 years of Harry Dean Stanton, I'll walk you through three of my favorite performances from him that I think are essential viewing.

Paris, Texas (1984)

Stanton's most acclaimed role is from the emotional masterpiece Paris, Texas. I find that this film really captures the essence of what Stanton does so well. He's a very reserved, textural performer. His story and his thoughts are written in the lines in his face. In the words he doesn't say. When he does speak, there is such a gravity to it, and such truth in the words.

The film follows Stanton's character Travis, who reappears after being missing for four years to reunite with his son, and try and find where the boy's mother has gone. It's a deeply human story about regret, family, loneliness, and love that is one of my absolute favorite films ever. As it happens, the film is available in its entirety for free on YouTube. It features Stanton's best work, one of the greatest scores of all time courtesy of Ry Cooder, and is a film I think everyone should see once in their life.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1993) and Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) David Lynch and Harry Dean Stanton.

Kevin Winter / Getty Images

It's hard to touch on the impact that Stanton has on Twin Peaks without spoiling the entire franchise. I don't exaggerate when I say it may be the greatest work of art ever conceived, and I wouldn't want to ruin the experience of watching it in its entirety for the first time.

Stanton gives a warmth and kindness to the story, specifically during The Return that I think is desperately necessary to both the thesis of the show, as well as the experience of watching it. Twin Peaks is a harrowing, heartbreaking, and insurmountable experience that can be a lot sometimes. Stanton is a respite from the cosmic evil that permeates every fibre of the show.

Lucky (2017)

I'm a massive fan of the film Lucky. It follows Stanton as this 90 year old loner coming to terms with his age and mortality after he takes a fall out of nowhere. It's a deeply spiritual meditation on life, meaning, and aging that oozes with a love and earnestness that really affected me emotionally.

The film's legacy is painted by the fact that Stanton passed a few months after it released. The film serves as a swansong to his career, and may be the best way he could have gone out. It's a story that is clearly deeply personal to him in the way he carries his performance, and it captures everything there is to love about him as a performer.

I wish Harry Dean Stanton could be hear to celebrate his centennial. He was a remarkable actor who hasn't received nearly enough recognition. Happy birthday, Harry. We miss you a ton.
