1973 Rock Classic Ranked Among 'Best Basslines of All Time' Was Iconic Band's First U.S. Hit

Sat, 05/23/2026 - 11:21pm

Guitar solos might get the lion's share of the glory, but some of the biggest hits in rock history owe their popularity to unforgettable basslines.

A perfect example? Pink Floyd's "Money." The classic track, released on 1973's iconic Dark Side of the Moon album, opens with one of the most instantly recognizable basslines of all time, courtesy of Roger Waters. It was Pink Floyd's first major hit in the U.S., peaking at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

It's no surprise that the song has been ranked among the "Best Basslines of All Time" by multiple outlets, from Guitar World to Far Out magazine.

"Pink Floyd’s ‘Money’ is an undisputed classic, boasting one of the greatest riffs ever," wrote Far Out's Arun Starkey.

"Another simple bassline that doesn’t overcook the meat, there’s natural potency in this funky groove," Starkey continued. "It was perfect for Roger Waters to discuss his newfound interest in money and all its trappings over. It reflects the musical brilliance of Waters’ bassline that you can listen to this song repeatedly and not get bored. A magic about it gives The Dark Side of the Moon one of its highlights."

Roger Waters was the driving force behind 'Money'

In a 1993 interview with Guitar World, David Gilmour gave Waters credit for writing most of "Money."

“It’s Roger’s riff,” Gilmour said. “Roger came in with the verses and lyrics for 'Money' more or less completed. And we just made up middle sections, guitar solos and all that stuff.”

"We also invented some new riffs — we created a 4/4 progression for the guitar solo and made the poor saxophone player play in 7/4," he continued. "It was my idea to break down and become dry and empty for the second chorus of the solo.”

Speaking to Uncut years later, in 2015, Waters was asked if there was a specific song that reminded him of Waters.

"'Money,'" he replied. "I’m not talking about the lyric. Just the quirky 7/8 time reminds me of Roger. It’s not a song I would have written. It points itself at Roger.”

In the years since its release, "Money" has been covered by everyone from The Flaming Lips to Gov't Mule to Velvet Revolver. Waters even re-recorded the song himself for The Dark Side of the Moon Redux in 2023.

This Legendary 'Cult' Comedy Series Was Greenlit 57 Years Ago Today

Sat, 05/23/2026 - 11:19pm

Among the funniest Broadway musicals still touring is Monty Python's Spamalot, featuring numbers and sketches from the British comedy troupe's renowned films.

In addition to its big-screen work, the hilarious ensemble — consisting of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin — was also popular on TV thanks to Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Saturday, May 23 marks exactly 57 years since the British Broadcasting Corporation gave the go-ahead to the absurdist comedy series and ordered 13 episodes.

View this post on Instagram

The first episode of seminal comedy series, titled "Whither Canada?" was broadcast on October 5, 1969, according to the BBC. The Radio Times reportedly celebrated the launch with a spoof board game that set Monty Python in the context of previous satirical and late-night shows. In the first program, sketches included "Famous Deaths" presented by Mozart, the writing of the funniest and deadliest joke in the world.

The show's influence has been so notable that the word "pythonesque" now exists in the dictionary. The Cambridge Dictionary, for example, defines it as "funny in a silly, strange, or surprising way, in the style of the British TV show Monty Python's Flying Circus."

In 2007, TV Guide rankedFlying Circus at No. 6 on its list of Top 30 Cult Shows Ever. These days, fans can watch the beloved program on YouTube for free.

Nine years ago, meanwhile, the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail was ranked at No. 11 on an IMDb list of "Most Rewatchable Movies," placing it among some of the most revisited films ever made. The ranking adds to the movie’s long-running reputation as one of the greatest comedy films in cinema history.

As fans are well aware, the movie turned the legend of King Arthur into a wildly absurd adventure filled with killer rabbits, rude French soldiers, coconuts used as horse sounds and one unforgettable Black Knight.

Although it's pretty much guaranteed that your nearest Walmart will be open, it's still a good idea to double-check with your local store to be sure they aren't planning to close early. The Same Day Jimmie Rodgers Made History Twice—45 Years Apart

Sat, 05/23/2026 - 11:00pm

On May 24, 1933, Jimmie Rodgers walked into a New York recording studio for what would become one of the most heartbreaking sessions in country music history.

By that point, the man often called the "Father of Country Music" had spent years battling tuberculosis, and his health had deteriorated badly.

According to accounts from the session, Rodgers was so physically weak that he needed to lie down on a bed between takes while recording.

Still, he kept singing.

During the session, Rodgers recorded "Mississippi Delta Blues" and "Years Ago," two songs that would become his final recordings.

Just two days later, Rodgers died from a pulmonary hemorrhage while staying at New York’s Taft Hotel. He was only 35 years old.

Even nearly a century later, the story continues to resonate with country music fans because of what Rodgers represented to the genre itself.

Rodgers helped define the sound and emotional storytelling that shaped the foundation of country music. His signature blue yodel, railroad imagery and deeply personal lyrics influenced generations of artists who followed.

And decades after his death, his legacy was still being formally recognized.

On the very same date in 1978, exactly 45 years after Rodgers’ final recording session, the United States Postal Service issued a 13-cent commemorative stamp honoring him.

Designed by artist Jim Sharpe, the stamp became the very first release in the Postal Service’s long-running Performing Arts series.

1976 Rock Classic, Originally by Artists Who Formed a New Band, Became a Timeless Road Trip Anthem

Sat, 05/23/2026 - 10:01pm

In 1976, Boz Scaggs released a breezy rock song that would eventually become one of the defining road trip anthems of the classic rock era.

"Lido Shuffle" blended smooth rock, pop hooks and storytelling into a hit that still feels tailor-made for long drives and summer playlists nearly 50 years later.

The song also emerged during a pivotal moment in music history.

Scaggs co-wrote "Lido Shuffle" with keyboardist David Paich, who would soon go on to form the legendary rock band Toto alongside several other musicians connected to Scaggs' recordings and touring band. In fact, many future Toto members played on Scaggs' acclaimed album Silk Degrees, helping create the polished, groove-heavy sound that defined both artists during the late 1970s.

"'Lido' was a song that I'd been banging around," Scaggs shared in an interview. "And I kind of stole… well, I didn't steal anything. I just took the idea of the shuffle. There was a song that Fats Domino did called 'The Fat Man' that had a kind of driving shuffle beat that I used to play on the piano, and I just started kind of singing along with it. Then I showed it to David Paich and he helped me fill it out. It ended up being 'Lido Shuffle.'"

"Lido Shuffle" stood out because of its infectious rhythm and cinematic storytelling. The lyrics follow the mysterious character "Lido" through gambling, escape and restless adventure, giving the song a wandering spirit that perfectly matched its rolling piano lines and driving beat.

Musically, the track blended soft rock sophistication with rhythm-and-blues energy, helping it appeal to both pop and rock audiences during a decade dominated by radio. The song became one of Scaggs' biggest hits and helped turn Silk Degrees into a landmark album of the era.

Over time, "Lido Shuffle" evolved into something bigger than a chart success. Its upbeat momentum and carefree atmosphere helped cement it as a staple of classic rock playlists and road trip soundtracks.

The connection to Toto also became an important part of the song's legacy, since the musicians involved would soon help shape the polished California rock sound of the late 1970s and early 1980s with hits like Africa and Rosanna.

Nearly five decades later, "Lido Shuffle" still captures a feeling of movement, freedom and escape that has kept it timeless across generations. "I find myself engaged in something and let it consume me. Whatever it is is what I’m doing," Scaggs said in an interview. "I don’t worry about time passing. I just do what I do in front of me."

For many listeners, it remains one of those rare songs that instantly makes any drive feel cinematic.

Jaxson Dart’s Trump Rally Appearance Raises Questions, but Abdul Carter Rejects Locker Room Drama

Sat, 05/23/2026 - 9:50pm

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart introduced President Donald Trump at a rally in New York on Friday.

"Look, Big Blue Nation, it's a pleasure to be here. I've got to start this off with a 'Go Big Blue.' I'd love if you all would follow with me," Dart said to the crowd. "What an honor, what a privilege it is to be here. And without further ado, I'm grateful, I'm honored, I'm pleasured to introduce the 45th and 47th president of the United States of America, President Donald J. Trump."

When he took the stage, Trump then shook hands with Dart before the quarterback left.

However, this did not sit well with some of his teammates, including a member of his draft class.

Specifically, linebacker Abdul Carter took to social media, which is what sparked discussions that there's possible drama among the Giants players.

“Thought this s— was AI, what we doing man,” Carter wrote in a post on X.

However, the linebacker cleared things up later, writing another post on X that said, "Me & JD6 are good! We spoke earlier as Men. Yall can keep yall narratives.”

Offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor also chimed in on the matter, responding to a Boston reporter who posted the "Giants starting QB just divided his locker room."

"Locker Room is fine. Focus on New England," Eluemunor said.

Dart was drafted by the Giants in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, where he finished his rookie season going 216-of-339 for 2,272 passing yards and 15 passing touchdowns, as well as 86 rushing attempts for 487 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. As for Carter, he was also taken in the first round of last year's draft with the third overall pick. He recorded 43 total tackles with four sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 8.5 stuffs.

Taylor Swift Makes Unexpected Public Appearance After Unfortunate AMA News

Sat, 05/23/2026 - 9:35pm

Taylor Swift surprised fans with an unexpected public appearance at the NBA game.

The pop star stole the spotlight as she sat in the front row alongside fiancé Travis Kelce during the NBA Eastern Conference Finals with the Cleveland Cavaliers competing against the New York Knicks.

Veering away from her usual date night look, the “Bad Blood” hitmaker rocked an elevated sporty look this time, putting her own spin on the denim trend.

Swift’s outfit featured a black zip-up jacket and a black halter-neck top paired with light-washed denim pants and triple-strap Stella McCartney heels for a casual look.

Completing her date-night fit, the award-winning artist opted for a black Dior Cigole bag and accessories featuring her stunning Artifex Fine diamond engagement ring.

Of course, a Swift outfit will not be complete without her signature red lip, but this time she chose a muted shade.

The NFL star, on the other hand, matched his fiancée’s vibe with a denim short-sleeve top over a plain white shirt, which he styled with light washed denim pants for a coordinated outfit.

The music icon’s latest public appearance comes after news confirming that Swift will be skipping an upcoming annual music ceremony, as cited by People.

The 36-year-old musician will not be attending the 2026 American Music Awards despite being nominated for eight awards including Best Female Pop Artist, Best Pop Album for The Life of a Showgirl, Best Pop Song for "The Fate of Ophelia," Best Music Video for "The Fate of Ophelia," Song of the Summer for "Elizabeth Taylor," Song of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia," Album of the Year for The Life of a Showgirl and lastly Artist of the Year.

Scheduled on Monday, live from Las Vegas, Queen Latifah will host the upcoming event.

On the other hand, her last AMA appearance was in 2022, where she stepped out in a head-turning ‘70s inspired gold halter jumpsuit designed by The Blonds and paired with Giuseppe Zanotti metallic gold heeled sandals giving the outfit a tonal look.

At the time, Swift, who was nominated for a total of six awards, ultimately walked away with six awards, taking home Artist of the Year, Favorite Female Pop Artist, Favorite Female Country Artist, Favorite Pop Album (Red (Taylor's Version)), Favorite Country Album (Red (Taylor's Version)) and Favorite Music Video ("All Too Well: The Short Film").

'90s Rock Band Ranked Among 'Best Supergoups' of All Time, Despite Never Having a No. 1 Hit

Sat, 05/23/2026 - 8:22pm

In the 1990s, during the height of the grunge movement, a four-member supergroup became a driving force in music despite not having a chart-topping track.

Mad Season, a grunge supergroup, was formed with members from highly influential groups, with key members Mike McCready from Pearl Jam, Layne Staley from Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees’ Barrett Martin and The Walkabouts’ John Baker Saunders making waves in the music scene.

Years later, the band further cemented its legacy when Rolling Stone named it one of the “best supergroups” of all time.

Along with nine other notable bands, Mad Season earned recognition after securing the seventh spot.

The “River of Deceit” hitmakers, despite their incredibly short-lived status, were celebrated for their lasting impact on rock music and their unforgettable lineup featuring talented artists.

Formed in 1994 in Seattle, the supergroup only released one album titled Above but achieved major commercial success.

Not only was it considered a timeless classic in the 1990s music scene, but it was also officially certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America after reaching over 500,000 copies sold in the United States alone.

As mentioned, not a single track from the album peaked at No. 1 on the mainstream charts but the band still conquered the radio airwaves with fan-favorite songs that became Mad Season’s anthems.

This includes "River of Deceit," which became their most successful radio single.

With the lyrics written by Staley, the song was inspired by the book The Prophet by Khalil Gibran, which the vocalist was reading at the time.

“Layne Staley felt as though he was on a spiritual mission through his music. Not a rock mission, a spiritual mission,’” drummer Barrett Martin shared as mentioned on the band’s official Facebook post in 2013.

Besides “River of Deceit,” their other notable tracks include "Wake Up," "I Don't Know Anything" and "Long Gone Day," which featured Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees.

Unfortunately, following their massive success in the mid-1990s, Mad Season went on a semi-permanent hiatus in 1996.

Since the majority of the members were from highly influential rock groups, their commitments to their primary bands made scheduling more difficult.

In addition, Mad Season’s future was overshadowed by tragedy following the deaths of its members.

Saunders passed away in 1999 due to a drug overdose, while Staley died in 2002.

What Led to Kyle Busch's Death?

On Wednesday, Busch began suffering a medical emergency at the General Motors Charlotte Technical Center in Concord, North Carolina, Yahoo shared. A man on the scene called 911, according to a recording obtained by TMZ. He told authorities that Busch was suffering “shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he’s going to pass out and is producing a little bit of blood — coughing up some blood.” Hours after his family confirmed he had been hospitalized for a “serious illness,” NASCAR announced his death at 41.

“Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch,” the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and NASCAR said in a statement. “A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans. Throughout a career that spanned more than two decades, Kyle set records in national series wins, won championships at NASCAR’s highest level and fostered the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series. His sharp wit and competitive spirit sparked a deep emotional connection with race fans of every age, creating the proud and loyal ‘Rowdy Nation.’”

What Was Kyle Busch's Cause of Death?

Busch died of pneumonia leading to sepsis, according to a statement provided by the Busch family on Saturday morning, Yahoo News confirmed.

"The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications,” the family said in a statement. "The Family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time."

Yahoo added that twelve days before his death, Busch had complained of sinus issues while racing at Watkins Glen and asked for a doctor to visit him in his hauler after the race.

What Barbra Streisand Said in Her Heartfelt Message to Cannes After Missing Honor

Sat, 05/23/2026 - 7:59pm

Barbra Streisand was set to receive her honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 23, but a knee injury kept her away.

That didn't stop the two-time Oscar winner, 84, from sending a video message to the prestigious event in France, in time for the ceremony where she was honored in absentia during the closing portion of this year's festival.

Variety reports that her statuette was brought on stage Saturday by renowned French actress Isabelle Huppert, who gave a speech that highlighted Streisand’s achievements in film, music and on the stage and also her support for the LGBTQ+ community and religious and ethnic minorities.

Then came Streisand's message, following a video reel that showed clips from hit films such as A Star Is Born.

"In a chaotic and unstable world that seems to fracture more and more each day, it is reassuring to see the captivating films presented at this festival by artists from many countries," Streisand said in part, per Cannes' recent Instagram upload. "Cinema has this magical ability to bring us together, to open our hearts and our minds. And that is what we truly celebrate in Cannes. And I am so proud to be part of this community. So thank you very much for this honor, and long live cinema!"

View this post on Instagram

“On the advice of my doctors, as I continue recovering from a knee injury, I am sadly unable to attend the Festival de Cannes this year,” Streisand had said in a statement last Sunday, May 17. “But I am deeply honored to receive the honorary Palme d’Or and had so been looking forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition.”

The actress added that she had been looking forward not only to accepting the honor, but also to reconnecting with fellow artists and returning to France: “While I regret that I can’t be there in person, I want to extend my warmest congratulations to all of the filmmakers from around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being celebrated this year."

'80s Star Says Playing He-Man Isn't Only About Strength

Sat, 05/23/2026 - 7:43pm

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe got a live-action adaptation after the success of the cartoon in 1987. Dolph Lundgren played the Sword-of-Power-wielding toy, and he's back in the 2026 movie. He gave an interview about what it takes to play He-Man.

Dolph Lundgren Is Part of the 'Masters of the Universe' Cast

Nicholas Galitzine stars as the hero stepping into his destiny in Masters of the Universe. Lundgren, 69, told Entertainment Tonight his reaction to seeing Galitzine, 31, in his costume.

"I thought he looked great," he said. "He looked like He-Man and I think he has the [...] gentleness and the compassion that kind of the other side of strength, which is important to balance that out. So it's about finding your power and also how to use it. I think he has both."

The cult classic movie showed a young Lundgren with a thick accent playing the character. This made him a controversial pick for the role. Galitzine will play the character like it was originally imagined.

There is another thing that will set the new movie apart from the original. Production also ran out of money, which affected the fight between He-Man and Skeletor, according to the documentary Toy Masters.

"Even though we shut down the set, I got Skeletor (Frank Langella) and Dolph and the [director of photography] and I got them to let me shoot some footage of them battling … it was a very quick choreographing job," director Gary Goddard said. "We kept the lights out. We back-lit them so we had enough so we could piece together the battle."

Lundgren teased that his role in the 2026 movie will include a scene in which he gives advice to the young hero. Masters of the Universe will be released in theaters on June 5.
