Disney+ recently announced that it will be adding an iconic animated film from the 1980s to the platform on May 25. The movie, The Brave Little Toaster, was about a group of appliances who set out to find their owner after being abandoned in the woods.

The film was based on a novella of the same name, written by Thomas M. Disch. Although the movie was originally released in theaters in 1987, it became much more popular after being released on home video and airing on the Disney Channel in 1988. The film went on to inspire two sequels, The Brave Little Toaster to the Rescue and The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars.

Although this was a movie meant for children, it was surprisingly dark. When asked about the tone of the film in a Reddit AMA, director Jerry Rees said, “I asked our voice actors to keep the characters believing their world - never playing it for laughs. And David Newman, in writing the score, tapped into an inherent sadness in being abandoned and seeking reunion. I think all of us making the film took the attitude of being the characters rather than just observing the characters. If you ARE an old car headed for the crusher, that's some dark business!”

Rees continued, “I think the ONLY reason I was able to make that tone of a movie was because we were off the studio grid. No studio would EVER have let us do that. At the time it was just nuts, including having improv comics from adult comedy clubs doing voices. Now that aspect happens all the time. And with the progress of films like UP, which dealt with a miscarriage and aging and having a spouse die - yes, there is hope of doing a film with darker layers - with the right backing...”

In addition to The Brave Little Toaster, Disney+ will also be adding The Weekenders to the platform on May 25. This series, which ran from 2000 until 2004, followed four pre-teen friends trying to have the perfect weekend.

You know L.C. Chu, especially if you’re a romance reader. You know her as Lily Chu, and now she’s stepped into the fantasy arena with The Library of Flowers.

There is an element of romance within, but The Library of Flowers brings us into a world where our sense of smell is invited to take over. For centuries, the Hua women have managed to have sway over emperors and billionaires thanks to their magical perfumes. They can stir hearts and ensure fortunes.

Every fifth generation, an eldest daughter is born with the ability to summon true love, and that’s the destiny Lucy has been granted. Only, she doesn’t want that destiny, especially after her magic failed, so she leaves it all behind fleeing Vancouver for Toronto to live life her way.

I chatted with Chu about the inspiration for the novel and why the power of scent is so important to us as humans. However, it all started with a discussion about the gorgeous cover. I know people say to never judge a book by its cover, but this is one case where you can ignore them.

“I had a mental image of what the cover would be,” Chu explained as we got into the intricacies of it, “I had images of an indigo blue and a pink. That’s where I was mentally, and then they showed me this, and I don’t know what I was thinking!”

While Leni Kauffman does the covers for Chu’s romance novels, including Drop Dead and The Takedown, Sija Hong was commissioned for The Library of Flowers, and that was intentional, with Chu explaining, “Because this book is a different vibe, I loved having that very eye-catching cover. I can see that thing across a room.”

As Chu explained that she’s not visually artistic, I could completely relate. Authors and writers have a skill of putting words to page, but trying to figure out the perfect picture or piece of art is another level of creativity, and I could understand as Chu shared, “Some people just have an eye. This is the balance. This is the tone, and I’m not great at that. I really do depend on the people whose job it is to be artistically brilliant.”

The Library of Flowers is focused on Chinese culture, but it’s also a story that anyone can relate to. For elder daughters, we can understand Lucy’s fight within herself, and while Chu isn’t an eldest daughter, she’s an only daughter, so she understood it as well.

“I had a lot to draw on,” Chu said when it came to the inspiration to make it relatable.

“The great thing about being a writer is that you use your imagination for this stuff. While a lot of Lucy’s character came from my own experience, it also came from the experiences of a lot of other women I was able to meet and ask questions.”

Lucy is also a woman in her 30s, and that’s an important and redefining age, as we tend to feel like we should have everything figured out.

“You’re not an adult in your 20s,” Chu went on to talk about the development of Lucy, “When you hit your 30s, you’re supposed to have it figured out. People don’t have jobs; they have careers. Maybe they’re having kids, and maybe they’re buying houses.”

Lucy isn’t at that stage. Instead, “her life is almost stagnated.”

She hasn’t achieved everything that she would want to do. Chu explained that “she has her own perfume business, but she still has all this unfinished business that she has to deal with before she can move on with her life.”

The perfume business and the world of perfume with the Hua family is something that steps out of the page. The way Chu describes the scents is mesmerizing and makes you feel like those scents are all around, and that comes from the critically acclaimed author getting lots of sample bottles and having them around her house.

“I just like having scents around me,” she told me, “So I just reached out for what things smell like. I would see which scents would work well together, and then I would double-check. I have a perfumer's kit with a whole bunch of notes that you can mix. They were all terrible, and there’s a reason people train for years in this, but it helped.”

Lucy’s business is in Toronto, thousands of kilometers away from her family. She’s run away from her mom, and it’s another element that many people can relate to. She left home to get away from the destiny that was being placed on her, and we don’t even need the world of fantasy to understand that pressure.

“A lot of my books deal with expectations, either societal or family, because I think a lot of our internal expectations are derived from those areas,” Chu touched on, “Lucy has always been told the story that she is going to be this super special daughter. Her job is to save the family, which is a lot of pressure.”

And it’s true that we all have expectations based on what people have told us. It can be in work or love, but the expectations come from growing up. Some people have a family business thrust onto them from a young age, while others will have parents who push certain relationship expectations on their children. Society pushes particular roles on us, and one of the scariest things is disappointing people.

“People don’t want to disappoint their parents,” Chu agreed, while also adding, “People want to make a success of their life, and they want to be happy. They want to be doing what they want to do, and they don’t want to consider themselves as a failure. So, Lucy’s just an extreme version of that.”

Some of the best fantasy stories are those that have a real-world element, but it was a conscious choice to put The Library of Flowers into a fantasy realm, and Chu shared that it was to give her something different to work on other than her romance novels.

“I really wanted a change of pace, because this was a different genre, and I think perfume has an element of magic. Realistically, we know it’s science, but it’s all about how we process smell and how it’s attached to memory. A single sniff of something can transport you back years. All of a sudden you’re in your university dorm room or you’re in the club. It’s visceral.”

And it’s true. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve walked down the street and the smell of someone’s laundry detergent takes me back to boarding school. However, the Hua women don’t just use perfumes to bring back memories.

“I was originally working on a book with an alchemist in the time of Anne Boleyn, but that wasn’t really working, and it morphed into this,” teased Chu, as we discussed where the development of using perfumes to control came from. Now, I'm convinced we need this Anne Boleyn-time period story in some sort of way.

Something that many readers have latched onto is the way the Hua ancestors get their stories told, and these are stories that many of us would love to see more of. Is it possible that we could see more development in the world of The Library of Flowers?

“I really liked writing those chapters,” Chu was happy to hear that there was an interest in more, “I have a degree in Chinese history, so it was a pleasure to finally use it, and it was deeply satisfying for me to write those chapters. I would love to write a straight historical fiction set in one of those times, because they’re such interesting time periods.”

It’s not a promise of more from the Hua women, but there’s hope that we could see more stories from Chu that take us into these worlds. Even if it’s following another set of characters, the idea of going back to the Ming or Qing time periods through her eyes would be amazing.

The Library of Flowers is perfect for those who love fantasy, historical fiction, and women’s fiction, and it’s available now at a bookstore near you.

When it comes to buying a home, Ramsey's top advice is to spend no more than 25 percent of your take home pay on your mortgage payment. That means keeping everything associated with your home, including taxes and insurance, to less than 25 percent of your monthly income.

However, with a full-blown affordable housing crisis and stagnant wages, that 25 percent target is getting harder and harder to hit. Consider that U.S. News and World Report reports the median sale price in the country was $408,800 in March, and an online mortgage calculator shows your monthly payment at $2,450.94 with a 6 percent interest rate. You would have to bring home $9,803.76 each month to keep within Ramsey's guidelines.

ZipRecruiter says that the average take-home pay in America is just $4,865.75, making Ramsey's rule hard for most of the country to follow.

Experts Say the Rule is Still Worth Following

Does that mean that people should ignore Ramsey's advice so that they can buy a home? Well, not exactly. The mortgage experts who spoke with U.S. World News and Report say that while it's a good idea, it's not exactly obtainable for many people. That's especially true for those who live in areas with a high cost of living and those who are forced to purchase homes with high upfront interest rates with little to no down payment.

If that sounds like you, these experts suggest following the guidelines set by your lender, which typically looks at your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio to determine how much you can reasonably spend. In most cases, that means keeping your mortgage (as well as all your other debts and expenses) limited to between 36 and 45 percent of your income.

While that will undoubtedly stretch your budget a little more than Ramsey likes, it may be the only way for some people to purchase a home, which is a path to building wealth in and of itself. That being said, it's important to live within your means. And if you don't feel like you can afford the housing payment your lender is telling you that you qualify for, consider either putting more money down on your home to reduce that payment, or else look for a less expensive home before moving forward with the deal.

Doug McCain, son of the late John McCain and brother to Meghan McCain, has died. According to TMZ, Doug died suddenly at the age of 66. A cause of death has not yet been reported. An online obituary confirms that Doug unexpectedly died on May 20, 2026.

Meghan shared the heartbreaking news on social media.

"I am deeply saddened to share the news of my brother Doug McCain’s sudden passing," Meghan captioned an Instagram post on Saturday, May 23. "He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humor, fun and great conversation to every room. I will cherish our memories together. Our prayers are with his wife Ashley and children Caroline and Shepp."

Dozens of social media users took to the comments section of Meghan's post to share their condolences with her and the rest of the McCain family.

"I am so sorry Meghan. I have heard it said that the death of a sibling is like losing a part of yourself & your history. I have found that this is true. I wish you and your family peace and strength during this sad time," one person wrote.

"So sorry to hear, Meghan!! Prayers for you and your family," someone else said.

"Heartbroken to learn that your beloved brother has passed away. Heaven has gained an amazing angel. All our love and prayers to you and your family," a third comment read.

Doug graduated from the University of Virginia before he joined the Navy. He is survived by his wife, whom he met in college, and their two children, daughter Caroline, and son Doug Jr. a.k.a. Shepp.

Doris Day was an iconic actress and singer who released over 650 songs throughout the course of her career. Her 1952 hit "A Guy Is A Guy” rose to number one on the Billboard chart 74 years ago.

The song, which was written by Oscar Brand, was released by Columbia Records. The lyrics, which some now find controversial, include: "I walked down the street like a good girl should. He followed me down the street like I knew he would. Because a guy is a guy wherever he may be. So listen and I'll tell you what this fella did to me."

In a 2012 NPR interview, the actress spoke about her singing career. She explained how she originally started out performing with Les Brown and His Band of Renown, but she eventually went solo. “The first time I ever worked alone, I had two shows a night at The Little Club on East 55th St. in New York,” she said. “I opened it. My mother was with me and my little baby. It was something so new for me. I thought, what am I doing? I was so used to having the guys behind me. But it turned out to be really nice. The people kept coming back! I was surprised!”

One of her most famous moments took place in The Man Who Knew Too Much from Alfred Hitchcock. She performed "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)," which went on to win an Oscar for the Best Original Song.

However, Day wasn’t a fan of the song at first. “Well, the first time that somebody told me it was going to be in that movie, I thought, why? Because the movie, you know how horrible it was toward the ending when our boy was kidnapped. And I didn't think that there was a place to put that song. And I heard the song before I knew what the story was completely. But then they tell me that that's going to be in the movie. I thought, why?”

In addition to appearing in the classic Hitchcock film, Day played the lead in several other Hollywood films, including Calamity Jane and Pillow Talk. She also had her own series, The Doris Day Show, from 1968 until 1973.

Day died in 2019 at the age of 97.

How You Can Beat The Odds

Seeing the business mogul list your current occupation can feel daunting, but there are steps you can take to help protect yourself and your future employment. Cuban’s assessment is based heavily on AI integration being necessary for businesses and therefore employees to stay fruitful. He notes that, much like when the internet was introduced, refusing the adopt new technology can leave you behind.

How to guard against job loss:

• Acquire new skills
• Change industries
• Start your own business
• Start a side hustle now
• Move

Learning new skills in AI can help keep you relevant in your own field, but you can also change industries if you don’t want to adopt the unstable tech. If you’re young enough, going into a trade like plumbing, car maintenance and repair, and electrical may be a good move.

You may also want to start your own business or buy into an already profitable one. The quiet millionaires of today own parking garages, laundromats, vending machines, and parking lots. These will always be in demand and are surprisingly profitable. 

A small side hustle can give you extra cash to save or invest, while moving to an area that needs your skills may be a viable option.

Coastal scientist Stephen P. Leatherman—known as Dr. Beach—has been ranking America's beaches annually since 1991, and his list has become the definitive guide for serious beachgoers. This year, after assessing 650 public beaches using 50 different criteria, one Hawaiian gem claimed the top honor: Poipu Beach on Kauai.

What earns a beach the #1 ranking? According to Dr. Beach, "This family beach is known for its golden coral sand and crystal-clear water." But what really sets it apart is how the beach is actually shaped.

According to Dr. Beach, Poipu is technically two beaches separated by a narrow sandbar. This creates two distinct experiences in one location. One side features shallow, calm waters protected by the island, making it ideal for families and young swimmers. The other side opens to the Pacific, with larger waves, more suited for active water activities. You can literally walk from toddler-friendly to surfable water depending on where you stand.

The protected side is where the snorkeling shines. The water is super clear, and you can often look down and see fish at your feet. The beach has also become known as an afternoon resting spot for Hawaiian monk seals and sea turtles, two endangered species that appear regularly. Dr. Beach emphasizes the importance of observing from a distance and never disturbing them.

The sand itself is soft and coral-hued, and you're on Kauai's dry side of the island, which means consistent sunshine year-round. Don’t worry, the beach isn't remote—there are facilities, lifeguards, and nearby amenities so you're not roughing it.

Dr. Beach's evaluations are a serious affair. His 50 criteria include water quality, sand texture, wave patterns, safety features, cleanliness, environmental stewardship, and scenic appeal. He also weighs smoking policies, accessibility, and maintenance standards. It's a comprehensive approach, which is why his rankings are found newsworthy.

Hawaii and Florida dominated his top 10 this year, which tracks with his philosophy of prioritizing what he calls "swimming beaches"—places with genuinely warm water. Beautiful cold-water beaches might exist, but if you're not tempted to jump in, they don't make the cut.

The singing superstars recorded their parts separately. LaBelle laid down her vocal track first in Philadelphia, and McDonald followed up in Los Angeles. The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Carol Bayer Sager and produced by Bacharach.

McDonald believes that it was for the best that he and the legendary artist didn't face off in the recording studio. "Patti's such a formidable live performer and such an artist at improvisation. And that's pretty much her thing. I don't think she sings any song the same way twice. It's always in that moment that she's creating the melody and the feel of the song. And she's very good at it."

"Ad-libbing is not one of my favorite things because I don't know that I'm that good at it. But I was kind of happy I didn't have to go one-on-one with her in the studio and try to keep up with her at the microphone!"

McDonald used LaBelle's emotional recording as a basis for his own vocals. He admitted, "I think in the end, it really gave me some ideas on how to sing the song with her at a later date."

Murray is telling her story because she wants everyone to know that what happened to her could happen to anyone. “I was well educated, from a middle-class family; everything should have been fine,” the retired actress said. “I thought, ‘I'm smart. I make good choices.' Well, I made terrible choices. But it's important to understand why people do these things, rather than going, ‘Oh, they must be idiots.' Or, ‘How stupid could you be?'”

She continued, "It felt really important to say, 'I went through this.’ Lots of people go through this. That doesn't mean they are bad or f---ed up forever."

Murray, 36, is releasing her autobiography, The Make-Believe, on May 28. It goes into more detail about her experience.

Alan Jackson is set to make a major television appearance this Memorial Day weekend as the country music legend continues his farewell tour.

PBS confirmed that Jackson will perform during the 2026 National Memorial Day Concert, airing live Sunday, May 24, from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The annual special will once again be hosted by actor Gary Sinise, though perennial host Joe Mantegna has had to cancel for the second year in a row. Actress Mary McCormack will now host in his place.

Jackson’s appearance comes during an emotional chapter in the Country Music Hall of Fame member's career. The singer previously revealed that he has been living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, an inherited neurological condition that affects balance, muscle strength and mobility.

“This disease is inherited from my daddy,” Jackson said during a 2021 appearance on the Today Show. “There’s no cure for it, but it’s been affecting me for years.”

The condition has increasingly impacted Jackson’s ability to tour, leading the singer to announce that his current run of shows would likely be his last major tour.

If you know an automobile aficionado, they've likely expressed their love for classic cars on more than one occasion. Today, many car lovers across the country regularly gather to admire each other's vehicles at collector events throughout the year. Many of the cars are inevitably from the 1970s, a decade that produced a plethora of enviable automobiles. As our Parade Rewind series continues this month, we wanted to pay homage to 25 popular cars everyone wanted in the 1970s.

When it comes to vintage cars, many of them are like fine wine: they truly get better with time. Sure, older vehicles certainly need a bit more maintenance than newer car models, but when you treat them well and give them plenty of TLC, they can last for decades.

Parade was curious to know which 70s cars made a giant splash, so we consulted three experts for their top picks for the most iconic cars of the decade.

We spoke with Terry Shea, the Marketplace Editor for Hemmings, the world's largest online collector car marketplace; AmericanMuscle Marketing Director Paul Knoll; and Robert M. Kennedy, a car collector, auto expert and author of Mustang Unbridled: The High-Octane History of Ford's Legendary Pony Car.

Which 1970s Cars Are the Most Iconic?

It's hard to pinpoint a single car that defined the 1970s, but there are certainly a few that earned icon status.

"The most iconic 1970s cars were those that struck the right balance of personality and performance," Knoll tells Parade. "Muscle cars like Mustang, Camaro, Corvette, Charger and Trans Am were not merely transportation. They represented identities. At a time when design, sound and raw engine feel meant more than refinement, there was an emotional connection to them."

Two standout cars from the decade were the 1970s Ford Mustang and Bronco.

"Early in the decade, before the first downsizing occurred, the Ford Mustang established itself as one of the most recognizable models in the world," he shares. "The Bronco was one of the early 'go anywhere' SUVs. With simplicity and off-road ability, it paved the way for many other rugged and capable SUVs."

Kennedy notes that the Mustang and Bronco evolved over the course of the decade.

"In 1970, Ford's Mustang was at the top of its game, offering economical hardtops, carefree convertibles, flashy fastbacks and big-block powerhouses like the Boss 429," he states. "By 1979, not only had the big-blocks faded away, the little Mustang II had cantered in and out between fuel crises and paved the way for the all-new 1979 Fox body Mustang."

Similarly, the Bronco changed over time and grew into a "much brawnier off-road bruiser" by the end of the decade.

What Cars Did Most People Drive in the 1970s?

The classic 1970s cars that collectors covet today aren't necessarily the cars that everyday people were driving at the time.

“Muscle cars got the attention of car magazines and media outlets. However, most 1970s drivers drove sedans and compact cars," Knoll tells Parade.

The car expert says popular everyday vehicles included the Ford Pinto, Chevrolet Nova, Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Beetle.

Kennedy explains that Americans were "still largely driven by the idea that bigger was better" when it came to cars in the late 1960s. However, that shifted when OPEC announced an oil embargo against the United States and its allies in October 1973.

"It dramatically changed the public's driving habits. Gas-guzzling V8s quickly fell out of fashion and fuel-sipping four-cylinders topped consumers' must-have lists," he shares. "Big Buicks and larger-than-life Lincolns fell by the wayside as drivers hopped into subcompact Civics, Corollas, Pintos, Vegas and Gremlins. Land yachts and muscle cars began collecting dust on used car lots. And, by the dawn of the '80s, the landscape of America's roads had transformed completely."

"Thanks in part to Farrah Fawcett's character in Charlie's Angels, Americans fell head over heels for the striped and spoilered 1976-78 Mustang Cobra II," Kennedy notes. "What they might have lacked in 'go,' they more than made up for with 'show.'"

2. Ford Bronco

"Rugged and utilitarian, the Bronco helped pave the way for modern-day SUVs. It was designed for off-roading and offered a lot of utility," Knoll says.

Per Kennedy, the Bronco entered the '70s as "one of America's earliest SUVs."

"It was relatively compact in size and exuded a charm in its simplicity," he explains. "By the end of the decade, it had grown into a much brawnier off-road bruiser, having traded six cylinders and small-blocks for larger 5.8L and 6.6L V8 engines."

3. Chevrolet Corvette

"Chevy's feisty fiberglass two-seater has been 'America's Sports Car' since 1953," states Kennedy. "And it continues to beat the best of the rest from around the world even today. But, against all odds, the Corvette's heyday was at the peak of the Malaise Era."

Knoll adds that the Corvette earned its charming nickname for its "styling, sleek designs and powerful V8 performance."

4. Plymouth Road Runner Superbird

"A sister car, but not quite an identical twin to the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, the 1970
Plymouth Road Runner was built to win on NASCAR’s super-speedways," Shea explains. "The aerodynamics might be crude by today’s standards, but the pointed nose, slick rear glass and large wing all helped improve the Road Runner’s high-speed performance."

5. Ferrari 308 GTS

"From 1975-1985, the 308 GTS easily emerged as the most popular Ferrari of the era. Of course, it didn't hurt that a young Tom Selleck soon slipped behind the wheel of a bright red V8-powered GTS each week in Magnum, P.I. as the '70s gave way to the '80s," Kennedy says.

"Even as Ferrari and Lamborghini continued to rely on 12-cylinders, Porsche proved that less truly could be more," Kennedy states. "First shown at the Paris Motor Show in 1974, its Turbo Carrera arrived in America for model year 1976. Based on the classic 911, but internally known as the Type 930, it was prone to violent boost-related snap-oversteer. This quickly earned it the nickname 'The Widowmaker.'"

"As Detroit’s engineers struggled to regain the power lost to ever-stricter emissions
regulations and fuel economy standards, they were still able to improve other aspects of
performance, such as handling and roadholding," Shea notes. "One of the best-handling American cars of the 1970s was the Pontiac Trans Am. It became an icon due to its bold, in-your-face styling, punctuated by a massive firebird decal on its hood."

8. Cadillac Eldorado

"For half a century, the Eldorado represented the pinnacle of American luxury," Kennedy tells Parade. "During the 1970s alone, Cadillac sold more than 400,000 of them. But the 1976 Eldorado was among the most coveted as it became the last factory-built American convertible until the Chrysler LeBaron dropped its top in 1982."

9. Lamborghini Countach

"This outrageously styled Italian sports car was one of the first of what we would call a supercar today," Shea says. "The Countach debuted in 1974 with a 375-horsepower V12 engine mounted behind the driver. Visibility was limited, as was getting into and out of the high-sill car, even with its exclusive scissor doors. The Countach promised 180 mph speeds in an era of fuel crises, oil price spikes and cars everywhere else with lower power capabilities."

10. Ford Pinto

"The Ford Pinto exploded onto the scene and lit the subcompact world on fire in 1970," Kennedy shares. "Despite jokes like that, the Pinto was tremendously popular, selling over three million units across its 10-year reign as America's best-selling subcompact. In fact, it outsold the Chevrolet Vega and AMC Gremlin combined."

11. Oldsmobile Cutlass

"Combining luxury with affordability and comfort, the Oldsmobile Cutlass became one of the bestselling vehicles of the decade," Knoll says.

"The AMC Pacer was all about economy. Making its appearance mid-decade, in the wake of the first fuel crisis, the Pacer sold roughly 280,000 units before 1980," Kennedy shares. "12 years later, it would find renewed fame as Wayne and Garth cruised the streets of Aurora, IL, head-banging to 'Bohemian Rhapsody' in Wayne's World."

13. AMC Gremlin

"The AMC Gremlin debuted for model year 1970. Built to compete with Ford's Pinto, Chevy's Vega and a new wave of imported automobiles, the Gremlin carved a funky niche for itself. It even offered a special Levi's edition with a real denim interior," Kennedy says.

14. Lotus Esprit

"Following Sean Connery's final turn as 007 in 1971's Diamonds Are Forever, Roger Moore picked up his Walther PPK and slipped behind the wheel of a Lotus Esprit in 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me," Kennedy tells Parade. "The film and the car were both popular enough that he returned with two more Turbo Esprits in 1981's For Your Eyes Only."

15. Toyota Corolla

"Toyota's Corolla continuously evolved throughout the '70s, always keeping ahead of its competition," Kennedy explains. "It outlived the Pinto, Vega and Gremlin. It continues today, not only having outsold its chief competitor, the Honda Civic, but even having eclipsed the Volkswagen Beetle to become the world's best-selling automobile of all time."

Kennedy notes that not all popular cars of the decade were sports cars.

"Introduced in 1972, the Honda Civic arrived in America as a simple, economical, subcompact two or four-door sedan, hatchback and station wagon," he explains.

Following the fuel crisis, demand soared and "its popularity has never waned," he states.

17. Dodge Li'l Red Express Truck

"By the mid '70s, muscle cars were struggling. On the other hand, pickups continued to be big business," Kennedy reveals. "So, Dodge offered buyers a Li'l Red Truck with big performance. The Li'l Red Express offered buyers a big V8, slotted mag wheels and even semi-style vertical exhaust pipes just behind its cab. It wasn't the craziest product of the '70s, but it was close."

18. Datsun 240Z

"Datsun's 240Z hit American showrooms in October 1969. As the '70s progressed, Datsun's Z cars would progressively feature larger engines as the 240Z evolved into the 260Z and 280Z by 1975," Kennedy states. "By the end of the decade, Motor Trend would even name the new 280ZX its Import Car of the Year."

"The Camaro delivered aggressive styling and V8 power, putting it on equal footing [with] the Mustang. It had the long hood, short deck design that was standard muscle car fare," Knoll says.

"A versatile choice for consumers, this car provided a smooth ride and great performance while also being practical," Knoll says.

In many cases, the front retail portion of the store remains open during regular business hours while pharmacy counters may close earlier than usual. Some MinuteClinic locations may also operate on reduced schedules.

Potato salad is the ultimate summer side. If you're hosting a BBQ, pool party or potluck and don't have creamy tater salad on the menu, you're doing it wrong.

I grew up loving my Aunt Maureen's version so so much. To me, there was no topping hers, and it was all because of the dressing. It was thick, luscious, tangy, mayo-based and so good I wanted to lick it straight off the spoon. 

Years later, when I asked her for the secret to her potato salad, she told me Miracle Whip and pickle juice. I must admit that I almost went straight to the store to buy the sugar-laden salad dressing, but instead, I asked my chef-husband, Luke, what was in his favorite potato salad recipe. 

"NOT Miracle Whip," he replied. (No shade, Aunt Mo, I still think yours is the GOAT.) "I prefer a potato salad with crème fraîche, mayo, mustard and beans—fresh fava beans or similar," he said.

Clearly, my next question was, "Can you make it for me?" Here's what happened when I followed him into the kitchen to do just that.

Given that Luke is a chef, he has an unfair advantage, ingredient-wise. He was able to get his hands on these beautiful Magic Myrna potatoes, which are a type of fingerling potato from Alaska with a creamy, buttery texture and reddish-yellow skins. If you can't find them near you, regular fingerling potatoes or baby red potatoes work too.

He also had some fresh pre-shucked fava beans from his restaurant that he added for a nice pop of freshness in the potato salad. Scallions and fresh dill were added to the mix and for the dressing, he reached mayo and mustard, along with a tub of crème fraîche (his favorite potato salad binder), cornichon pickles and some apple cider vinegar.

How to Make My Chef-Husband's Potato Salad

The first task Luke assigned me after a brief demo was peeling the potatoes, which is no small feat when the potatoes are this small! Honestly, this was the most labor- (and time-) intensive part of the whole recipe but he kept reassuring me the work would be worth it.

Once the potatoes were peeled he placed them in a large pot of cold salted water. "This is how the French do it," he said, "the way I was taught."

I immediately realized I'd been making potato salad wrong my whole life, plopping the spuds into a pot of boiling salted water but Luke told me if you add them to a pot of boiling they'll absorb too much water, break down and lose their integrity—resulting in mushy potato salad. To cook the potatoes properly, he slowly brought the potatoes to a simmer for about 15 minutes, then tested them with a fork to ensure they were tender.

Then he set about chopping some scallions and dill and added this to a bowl with the fava beans. He also came back with a little container of homemade tartar sauce he found in the fridge saying that would be our base because it already had briny potato salad-worthy ingredients like capers, pickles and vinegar mixed in.

Luke added a couple more spoonfuls of mayo, mustard and crème fraîche to the tartar sauce, then gave that a mix and threw in a few douses of hot sauce for a kick. 

"Only add the wet mixture once the warm potatoes are in the bowl," he tells me, "not before the potatoes go in or it will pickle the beans." After slicing the potatoes, in they went followed by the dressing.

His final tip was to start light with the dressing. "You can always add more later but it's hard to make potato salad less wet," he tells me. After a few good stirs and a bit more dressing, it was finally ready.

My Honest Thoughts on My Chef-Husband's Potato Salad

I'm never eating potato salad without beans again. Favas FTW! With every mouthful of creamy potatoes, there was a crisp bean pop that worked so well with the tangy dressing. I also got bits of pickles, capers and those fresh dill fronds with every enjoyable bite, making me reach for a second (and yes, a third) helping. 

The best part about Luke's potato salad was that it was even better the next day, although I'm shocked we had leftovers TBH. This dish is a total Memorial Day or summer BBQ side dish flex. Show up with this elevated take on potato salad and watch as the compliments roll in.

Top Tips for My Chef-Husband's Potato Salad

1. Peel your potatoes. "It's better to peel the skins off so they're more porous when the warm potatoes come out and soak up the dressing better," Luke tells me, adding that potato salad is more enjoyable to eat and has a better texture when the skins aren't slipping off mid-bite.

2. Simmer those spuds. I already touched on this one but it's arguably Luke's #1 tip when it comes to making the best potato salad and will have you winning all the potluck wars this summer. One more time for the people in the back: Start them in cold water and simmer (don't boil) your potatoes!

3. Use what you have on hand. Don't have crème fraîche? Go with a half mayo half mustard blend. Can't find fava beans? Try haricot vert, wax beans or any other fresh beans from the farmers' market. Not into dill? Microgreens, basil and cilantro also work well in potato salad. You could even throw in some hard-boiled eggs for extra protein if you like.
