Most music enthusiasts will agree that the 1980s were an important era for rock-and-roll, with plenty of bands from the genre producing memorable records throughout the decade. However, some '80s rock albums simply made more of a splash than others.

On June 1, Ultimate Classic Rock released a ranking of "the top 100 rock albums released in the ’80s," which highlighted hit records like Bruce Springsteen's The River from 1980, Piece of Mind by Iron Maiden from 1983, Bon Jovi's 1986 Slippery When Wet, The Clash's Combat Rock from 1982, George Harrison's Cloud Nine, released in 1987, andKate Bush's Hounds of Love.

The top five rankings featured Peter Gabriel's So from 1986, Paul Simon's Graceland, released in 1986, Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction from 1987, Disintegration by The Cure, released in 1989, with AC/DC's 1980 hit record Back in Black coming in at the top spot.

Ultimate Classic Rock reported that AC/DC's first record following the 1980 death of Bon Scott was Back in Black. The publication noted that Brian Johnson took on the role of the band's vocalist to record Back in Black.

In a 2024 interview with AXS TV, Johnson opened up about joining AC/DC. He explained that he was a member of the band Geordie before he was asked to try out for AC/DC following Scott's death. He recalled that during the audition he "sang two songs" before he received "some nods and smiles" of approval from the band.

"I guess it was just this wonderful moment when you know the stars align," said the musician, now 78.

He also described becoming AC/DC's new singer as "beautifully scary."

"It was because I was 32 years old. I thought, 'What am I doing here? Listen, they're going to find out after a couple of days that I'm just not that good,'" said Johnson during the 2024 interview.

Martin Scorsese isn’t just God’s gift to mob movies. He’s also a master at spinning magical needle drops in his reels. Released in October 1973, Mean Streets is one of Scorsese’s earliest films and stars gangster fare’s usual suspects in Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, and David Proval. Set in New York’s Little Italy, the crime drama follows Keitel’s Charlie, a devout Catholic and small-time mobster torn between loyalty, ambition, and devotion to his increasingly reckless best friend, Johnny Boy, played by De Niro. 

In the film’s opening scene, central themes such as the burden of Catholic guilt and the intoxicating allure of the criminal underworld are established. Following a voiceover from Scorsese himself — “You don't make up for your sins in church. You do it in the streets. You do it at home. The rest is bullsh-t and you know it.” — Charlie jolts awake from a nightmare. Shortly after that, the nostalgic 1963 pop-rock hit “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes kicks on while a projector begins to screen grainy home videos.

“This is where it all begins,” RS writes, “and really, this is as far as it could go. With this moment, director Martin Scorsese invented a whole new way to use rock & roll to tell a story, right in the opening scene of his Little Italy street-crime tragedy. Late at night, small-time gangster Harvey Keitel hears the Phil Spector teen romance of “Be My Baby” playing in his head. It’s the soundtrack to his memories, all his dreams and fears, all his Catholic guilt, all his New York groove.” 

Today, pairing pop music with pivotal movie scenes might seem commonplace. But in 1973, Scorsese’s use of “Be My Baby” was something different, functioning as an extension of Charlie’s inner life. The technique would become a defining characteristic of the filmmaker's work, in turn transforming how popular tunes are used on the big screen.

“The song sums up [Charlie’s] world in three minutes, except we can already tell it’s about to explode,” RS writes. “Every movie tries to do this same trick now (Dirty Dancing even swiped the same song), but nobody does it like Scorsese. After Mean Streets, neither music nor the movies would ever be the same.”

T-Mobile has just changed the travel game.

In addition to offering free in-flight wi-fi for customers traveling on partners including Delta and Southwest Airlines, T-Mobile announced another perk for Delta passengers.

"T-Mobile members will soon get a free premium in-flight drink on Us when flying Delta," the company informed customers on Tuesday, June 2, as part of its "Member Month" celebration. "And this brand-new travel perk is here to stay, extending beyond Member Month!"

The company added, "T-Mobile helped pioneer in-flight perks with free Wi-Fi for members — and now, it’s raising the bar again with free premium drinks for members year-round."

While Delta already offers passengers traveling in their premium cabin and Medallion members complimentary beer, wine, and spirits on select flights, T-Mobile's new benefit will extend to customers traveling in the main cabin.

T-Mobile has yet to reveal details on when exactly customers can begin enjoying the new perk, however, users will likely find more details in the T-Life app as they become available.

The Un-Carrier has been giving back to customers since it first launched T-Mobile Tuesdays 10 years ago. In honor of the anniversary, the company is launching a slew of new perks as part of its "Member Month", including free DashPass for a year, Super Duolingo free for three months, and multiple chances to win a once-in-a-lifetime getaway.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is one of the most anticipated films this year, and only one actor asked to read the script before joining the cast.

The film is based on the ancient Greek epic poem by Homer. It follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who embarks on a long, difficult journey after the Trojan War. The Odyssey stars MattDamon, Anne Hathaway, TomHolland, RobertPattinson, and Zendaya.

In a recent interview with GQ, Pattinson revealed his reaction after Nolan called him to talk about the film.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, can’t wait to read it.’ He’s like, ‘You want to read it? Everyone else just said yes,’” the actor shared.

In The Odyssey Pattinson portrays Antinous, an arrogant man trying to become the king of Ithaca. The Twilight actor opened up about working in Hollywood.

“It’s funny, because when you do a big movie, you kind of forget almost immediately how frustrating it is. I mean, there’s just nothing worse in the world when you just can’t get the jobs,” he said.

“I just remember after Batman I was thinking like, I’ll do another massive job afterwards, and I couldn’t find the thing. And it was incredibly frustrating because I thought there was like a secret door which opened and like suddenly all these different projects are there. They’re not. This doesn’t exist. And it’s because the whole industry’s different.”

Nolan understands how hard it is to be trusted with a big project. He believes directors should use their privilege to take risks.

“If you’re lucky enough to succeed with a project, you kind of have a responsibility as a filmmaker to try and say, ‘Okay, what can I do? What am I allowed to do now that maybe I wouldn’t have been allowed to do before or somebody else wouldn’t be allowed to do?’ Because these opportunities don’t come up very often,” he said.

The Odyssey premieres in theaters July 17.

NBC gave The Hunting Party fans a glimmer of hope when it wasn’t included on the list of cancellations in May 2026. However, just two days into June, that hope has been taken away.

The Hunting Party officially comes to an end after two seasons. It had originally been held on the bubble to see if there could be a home at Peacock, but just like Grosse Pointe Garden Society in 2025, that didn’t happen. Now, the series will be shopped around.

The cancellation is disappointing, but it doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The crime drama has struggled with the ratings throughout its sophomore season, moving to the Thursday night slot after Law & Order: SVU, which proved to be a struggle for Law & Order: Organized Crime just the year earlier.

NBCUniversal’s President of Program Planning Strategy, Jeff Bader, had admitted that the timeslot was a problem, telling Deadline, “We’re looking for places where we can grow the network, and that is a time period where we think we can do better.”

There was hope that the streaming numbers could help to give it a boost, with even the potential of it moving to Peacock. The NBC execs have decided that it’s not worth the renewal, which is often the case when the decision for a show is left after the broadcast schedules have been mostly locked in place.

It’s a repeat of history for NBC viewers. Grosse Pointe Garden Society was given the same treatment during the 2024–2025 TV season, with the decision being held for after the May Upfronts. There were talks of it potentially moving to Peacock, but in the end, cast options ran out, and it was abruptly canceled.

As is the usual case for a lot of broadcast shows unfairly and abruptly canceled, The Hunting Party will be shopped around. Considering NBC did try to boost the viewership of the series by putting the first season on Netflix during the Winter Olympic Games, this isn’t too surprising.

There was an interest in the series once it hit Netflix. This would be the most likely home for the crime thriller, which is where Manifest and Lucifer both went after they were canceled by NBC and FOX, respectively. It’s not easy to get a show saved after network cancellation, but it’s not impossible.

It now puts the NBC cancellations up to 11 for the season.

A formerHow I Met Your Motheractor is facing the possibility of spending the rest of his life behind bars.

Nick Pasqual, who appeared in a 2011 episode of the hit CBSsitcom, was sentenced Tuesday, June 2, to 32 years to life in prison following his conviction in the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hollywood makeup artist Allie Shehorn.

The sentencing comes more than two years after a brutal attack that prosecutors say took place at Shehorn’s Sunland, California home in May 2024. According to authorities, Pasqual broke into the residence during the early morning hours and stabbed Shehorn more than 20 times before fleeing toward the U.S.-Mexico border.

Shehorn survived the attack after undergoing emergency surgery and extensive medical treatment, but the physical and emotional impact remains. “When I was lying on the floor in a pool of my own blood, I remembered wondering if this was how my life was going to end,” Shehorn testified during the trial, per ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “I was terrified; I was in pain.”

The makeup artist had previously obtained a restraining order against Pasqual and testified that the relationship had become abusive before she ended it.

Jurors ultimately found Pasqual guilty of attempted murder, first-degree residential burglary, and additional charges related to the attack. During Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, Shehorn directly addressed her former boyfriend: “You, who I had once trusted, decided my life was something that you could take away.”

Per the outlet, Pasqual also addressed the court, stating, “Allie did not deserve to almost have her life taken from her. No amount of words can form an adequate apology for what she had to endure.”

However, the judge questioned the sincerity of that remorse, referencing a recorded phone call made just weeks ago in which Pasqual allegedly mocked Shehorn.

Pasqual, whose acting credits include a small role as architecture student Will in a Season 7 episode of How I Met Your Mother, is also facing a civil lawsuit filed by Shehorn. The suit alleges sexual battery, gender violence, assault, battery, negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

While unscripted shows have historically performed well on Netflix, there are some that end up going under the radar. One of those is What's in the Box?, a game show hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.

Across six episodes, contestants had the chance to compete in trivia rounds to win prizes. They didn't know what would be in each of the boxes they opened, with pairs having to face off in games of strategy and alliance-switching.

All six episodes dropped on December 17, 2025, and if you feel like you missed it, you're not alone. Like many Netflix shows, it flew under the radar, and so, it's not surprising to hear that Netflix has opted to cancel the game show.

Rather than make a big announcement about the cancellation, fans learned via Matt's Inside Line. A reader asked Matt Webb Mitvoch about the chances of a second season, and he did some digging with his contacts.

Netflix has confirmed that there are "no plans" to create any more episodes. In other words, it's been unofficially canceled.

How could we possibly miss such a fun game show? This was likely a mixture of bad timing for the drop, poor marketing, and another hit series taking over our screens at the same time.

What's in the Box? dropped just ahead of Christmas, a time whenStranger Things fans were waiting for the final episodes. With so much marketing surrounding the sci-fi series, it's not surprising that a new game show quietly dropped.

Harris' show did try to offer a slightly unique element to the ever-present game show genre. While it involved trivia, the strategy element and the mystery boxes helped to create something on the slightly more original side.

The news comes off the back of the renewal of Love Is Blind and the knowledge that Pop Culture Jeopardy has moved to the streamer for its second season.

American singer-songwriter and legend in the R&B scene from the '70s and '80s Peabo Bryson died on June 2nd, 2026. He was 75 years old. Bryson reportedly suffered a stroke two days prior on May 31st, though no official cause of death was released.

His family released a statement to announce the musician's death saying:

“With broken hearts and profound sadness, the family of two-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and balladeer, Peabo Bryson, announces his passing. He transitioned peacefully at 5:00 p.m. the evening of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and those closest to him.

“We are tremendously moved by the outpouring of love, prayers and support from fans, friends, and colleagues around the world. While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives were touched by his voice and his generous spirit. His legacy and music will live on for generations to come.”

Known for his buttery rich voice and impressive vocals, Bryson came up in the 1970s singing a long string of R&B hits. "Feel the Fire," “Reaching for the Sky," “I’m So into You," and “Crosswinds” all cemented him on the charts. In 1985, he recorded a version of the theme song for the soap opera One Life to Live after appearing on an episode. His vocals were added to the theme and his voice would be heard daily until television until the '90s for the daytime staple.

Bryson became incredibly well known for his various romantic duets with female musicians. In particular, his duet with Celine Dion for titular song for the Academy Award winning film Beauty and the Beast solidified his voice in the pop culture zeitgeist as well as winning him a Grammy Award. Bryson also recorded the lead song "A Whole New World" for the film Aladdin with Regina Belle, securing him another Grammy.

Bryson is survived by his wife, Tanya Boniface Bryson, their son, Robert, his eldest daughter, Linda Bryson, and three grandchildren. A celebration of life and funeral will be announced at a later date.

Out of all the epic love songs to come out of the '70s (and there were definitely a lot of them), it could be argued that Dan Fogelberg's "Longer" is one of the sweetest. It's not about somebody missing somebody else, or getting their heart broken, or having a crush...it's about a love that literally lasts forever.

Released as a single from Fogelberg's 1979 album Phoenix, "Longer" became the highest-charting track of the singer-songwriter's career, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

All these years later, the emotional lyrics are still ringing true for fans (especially those looking for a song to play at their wedding):

Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you

As Fogelberg explained in an online chat in 1997, he was actually looking up at the heavens when the inspiration for "Longer" came to him.

"I was laying in a hammock on Maui, Hawaii, on vacation, in 1978, with my then-wife. All seemed right with the world. The song seemed to write itself," he explained.

A couple of years later, in a 1981 interview with Interchords, Fogelberg reflected on the song's success, predicting decades of popularity to come.

"It's not my best song either, it's just a classic love song, and every songwriter always dreams of writing a classic love song that will be up there with the Cole Porter songs and 'Yesterday' and that stuff, you know?" Fogelberg said.

"That's the stuff that's gonna last," he added. "People are gonna sing them at weddings and really mean it, for a long time, and that's wonderful."

Fogelberg went on to say that he wasn't really as sad as he sounded on some of his songs.

"If you knew me real well, nobody thinks of me as morose or sad. I'm not that type of person. I love to laugh, it's my main thing. I love to abuse the English language. I love being with friends, having a good time. It's what I do most of the time, but the outlet for my sorrow, that I do feel deeply, and the pain, is the songs. That's where it goes. Maybe I do that too much, I dunno, sometimes I think I do."

According to Fogelberg, the source of his creativity was something of a mystery.

"I was blessed with a gift. It's a gift and a curse, you know?" he said. "It never ends, it never stops. You're always digging and digging. Someplace down there, and I feel it right down in my stomach when I really get there, I'm in touch with something. I don't know what it is. I believe in God, but not in any rational or theological scope. I can't do that. I can't find that. That's just too easy. But there is something in there that is overriding all of this. There's an energy that, like everything else, comes into being, becomes and decays. And that's almost like the way I approach songwriting, you know? It's that moment of ultimate creation. You know it's not really me. I'm a voice, but I'm also in control of the voice, so it's...I dunno, I've thought about that a lot and I still don't know."

Fogelberg died in 2007 at the age of 56, following a battle with prostate cancer, but his gift is still reaching new listeners every day. At the time of this writing, "Longer" has been streamed over 100 million times on Spotify alone.

Over the course of his career, Peter Frampton released more than a few signature tracks. One of them was a 1973 rock song that became a staple of his live performances and even landed him an invitation from a former United States president to the White House.

"Do You Feel Like We Do" is undoubtedly one of the most popular tracks that became an arena rock anthem. It was originally written in the early 1970's by Frampton and his band when they were jamming on The Old Kent Road, with the session having been captured on a reel-to-reel recorder. On the singer's official TikTok, he explained having heard himself playing a guitar solo that sparked the inspiration behind "Do You Feel Like We Do."

Frampton adds that the band soon developed the basis of the track that very same day, and he had a chorus he had worked on the night before. He also revealed that he had arrived at rehearsals that day drunk from the night before, which also happened to have inspired the lyrics.

The track's studio recording was a lengthy six minutes long, but wasn't released as a single. It was included in Frampton's 1973 studio album Frampton's Camel, but didn't have any chart success. It wasn't until three years later that the song became a sensational hit, as it became one of Frampton's closing number staples during his concerts.

Believe it or not, the original six-minute song became a 14-minute-long performance. The band and Frampton would have long stints of guitar solos, instrumental solos, and the singer using a talk box. The fan response to the live show led A&M Records to record a live album of when Frampton performed at Winterland in San Francisco. "Do You Feel Like We Do" was one of the recordings and was edited down to an over seven-minute live single for Frampton Comes Alive!

The success of the live track would become a defining hit for Frampton as it landed at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and at No. 13 on Cash Box. That same year, former U.S. president Gerald Ford invited Frampton to the White House due to the success of the album. "Do You Feel Like We Do" is still one of the singer's most popular hits, having recently played it live in 2025 on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

As organizers of the Freedom 250 celebration look for performers following several high-profile withdrawals, 1970s rock icon Ted Nugent has emerged as a potential addition to the lineup.

According to Consequence, Nugent has offered his services for the Great American State Fair, which includes the Freedom 250 concert tied to America's 250th birthday celebrations.

The development comes after reports that artists Martina McBride and Bret Michaels pulled out of scheduled performances, leaving organizers searching for replacement acts.

Nugent, known as the “Motor City Madman,” was highlighted as one of the artists most likely to accept an invitation to perform at the upcoming Great American State Fair and Freedom 250 festivities. The event is part of the nationwide celebration marking America's 250th birthday.

According to commentary published by Fox News, Nugent would be a dependable addition because of his long-standing support for patriotic events and his willingness to perform despite potential public criticism. The report described him as a “sure-fire addition” who would be unlikely to back out because of backlash.

The veteran rocker has not formally announced a Freedom 250 appearance, but the report suggested he would likely welcome the opportunity if invited.

The possibility of a Freedom 250 appearance comes during a surprisingly busy year for Nugent.

In 2023, the guitarist said his Adios Mofo Tour would be his last full-scale road trek, citing the challenges of being away from family, grandchildren and pets for extended periods. However, he also made it clear that he intended to continue performing select concerts and recording new music.

In May, Nugent added 10 more dates to his growing 2026 concert calendar, bringing his total number of scheduled performances this year to more than 30. The expanded itinerary includes stops across Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana, Colorado and Texas.

The tour has followed a relatively light performance schedule in recent years. Nugent played only 10 concerts in 2024 and 15 in 2025, making his 2026 return one of his busiest stretches since announcing his farewell tour.

The rocker also recently released Stranglehold 50th Bash, a concert film documenting a hometown performance in Detroit that celebrated five decades of live performances.

Born Theodore Anthony Nugent in Detroit, Michigan, the guitarist first gained attention in the 1960s as a member of The Amboy Dukes before launching a successful solo career in the mid-1970s.

His breakthrough albums, including Ted Nugent, Free-for-All and Cat Scratch Fever, helped establish him as one of hard rock's most recognizable guitarists.

Among his best-known songs are “Stranglehold,” “Cat Scratch Fever,” “Dog Eat Dog” and “Hey Baby.”

According to information published on Nugent's website, he has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and performed over 6,750 concerts during his career. His signature track “Stranglehold” has also accumulated tens of millions of views online decades after its original release.

Nugent later joined the supergroup Damn Yankees alongside Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades, further expanding his reach beyond his solo catalog.

If Freedom 250 organizers ultimately reach out, Nugent would bring a catalog that spans more than five decades of rock music. Fox News noted that he could perform favorites such as “Stranglehold” and “Cat Scratch Fever,” and even suggested the possibility of a reunion with former Damn Yankees bandmates.

With a discography as Bob Dylan's, there are bound to be some gems that a lot of people overlook. Each of his albums, however acclaimed or panned they may be still contain artistic gems that just take some digging to find. He has to have one of music's greatest collection of B sides.

Last year, a list of these songs was put together that chronicled underrated gems from the highest and lowest points of Dylan's discography, including one from what I feel is a bit of an underrated Dylan album. That song is "Black Diamond Bay" from "Desire."

"Desire" is full of these sweeping narratives. The shortest song on the album sits at three minutes and is one of two songs on the album below four. Each song is a narrative and musical journey. It's a great collection of tracks that showcases Dylan as storyteller, activist, and honest man, featuring songs like "Hurricane," a political epic about Ruben Carter's false conviction, and "Sara," a song about his tumultuous relationship with his wife that ended with divorce.

Settled within this album is "Black Diamond Bay," a song about a cast of characters and their eventual demise during a mythical disaster at the resort in Black Diamond Bay. We follow the unnamed woman, who serves as our observer through the chaotic resort as she meets a suicidal Greek man, a disgruntled soldier, and the disinterested front desk worker. We live in this setting, following the woman as she travels throughout the resort until a biblical concoction of natural disasters destroy the resort. The song ends as we move to Dylan's perspective, who is watching a news report of the disaster happening.

The song occupies this great heightened reality that Dylan does so well. The story is both familiar, as well as completely outlandish. He has such a masterful control of verbal specificity that creates these amazing lyrical images. Some of my favorites lines include:

"Up on the white veranda, she wears a necktie and a Panama hat. Her passport shows a face from another time and place, she looks nothin' like that."

"A soldier sits beneath the fan doin' business with a tiny man who sells him a ring. Lightning strikes, the lights blow out, the desk clerk wakes and begins to shout: 'can you see anything?'"

"The loser finally broke the bank in gambling room. The dealer said: 'It's too late now. You can take your money but I don't know how you'll spend it in the tomb.'"

The song is incredibly visual and captivating. I find myself listening to it like an audiobook. For those of you who find yourself gravitating more to the musical side of things, the song sports an awesome violin as well as backing vocals from a young Emmylou Harris.

"Black Diamond Bay" is one of a hundred or so hidden gems from Dylan's discography. The more you listen to him, the more you'll find. It's one of the best parts of listening to him. You'll always discover something new.

It's officially concert season, and we're already getting some tours colliding in the best ways possible. Over the weekend, two massive musicians both had tour stops in Berlin: Zach Bryan, and Metallica. Despite the busy schedule for both artists, it looks like they had time to have a bit of fun too.

Metallica's very own James Hetfield was caught attending Zach Bryan's show in the city, sporting a cowboy hat in some nice, up close seats.

It's a bit of an initial surprise to see an older metal musician such as Hetfield coming out to support a young country star, but it makes a lot more sense when you recognize the audiences that both of these artists share.

Country and rock music have a close and interconnected history, both coming from the same roots in Black America and borrowing from and influencing each other for their entire existence. You can't tell the stories of these genres without mentioning the other. As it happens, Hetfield has dabbled into country music himself, with the Metallica song "Mama Said."

Fans found Hetfield's appearance at the show exciting and captivating, taking to the comments to share their reactions to this star's appreciation for another.

"I am holding out hope for James Hetfield to release a country music album."
