Apparently, the Future of Social Security Isn't All Doom and Gloom

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 1:52pm

The future of the Social Security Administration (SSA) has been a much-debated topic for as long as I can remember. Even as a child, I remember my grandparents talking about whether the agency would have enough money to pay for their retirement and what it would look like when it was time for their children (and their grandchildren) to retire.

And while the end of that conversation usually included a bit of back-and-forth about exactly how much money the agency had left, there was always one prevailing sentiment: Social Security is going broke. However, some now say that Social Security may be in better shape than we thought. And, it doesn't just sound like the agency will be able to squeak by for a few more years, either. Some even say it has a long future ahead of it... even if that future does look different from what past retirees have had.

Social Security Only Has Enough Money to Get to 2032

April's issue of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General includes a study that finds that around two-thirds of Americans believe the SSA will stop sending Social Security payments in 2034, when the agency is expected to experience a shortfall due to paying out more than it receives in tax revenue.

And while AARP agrees that the money is shrinking due to the number of Baby Boomers who have been dipping into the account as they retire, the publication says that, much like the great line from Mark Twain, stories of the administration's death are largely exaggerated.

Instead, AARP says the SSA will be able to continue making payments, since the administration will continue collecting money from the paychecks of working Americans as it has always done. But those receiving Social Security benefits may see their checks shrink by 81 percent, a figure AARP says the SSA will likely be able to cover with its new cash flow.

How Much Will Your Social Security Payment Be

While I think we can all agree that receiving a smaller portion of Social Security benefits, when you pay the same amount into the pot as everyone else does, may feel like a scam, but without some sort of congressional intervention, this is the future many of us are looking at.

As for how much your Social Security benefits will be when you retire, well, that's a tricky question to answer. That's because there are many factors to consider, including the year you were born (retirement age has changed over the years, and depending on when you were born, you may be able to collect as early as 62 or have to wait until you are older). Additionally, your lifetime income is also taken into consideration when determining how much you are entitled to based on how much you paid into the Social Security pot.

According to the SSA, the administration will use the highest 35 years of indexed earnings (a fancy way of saying the income is adjusted for inflation to keep up with current trends) when determining what you're entitled to each month. The website has a spreadsheet to help you figure out this number. From there, you can enter it into just about any benefit calculator, and you will find out what your payout should be when you retire.

Of course, if you're going to start collecting after 2034, you might want to do another quick calculation to see what 81 percent of that figure will be, since that may be closer to the true number you'll be taking home each month. That said, Social Security is a hot topic for politicians, and every year someone comes up with an idea to "save" It. Hopefully, one of them actually comes to fruition before the agency is set to experience a shortfall, otherwise a lot of retirees are going to experience their own shortfall when they receive that monthly payment.

Kate Middleton’s Brother Shares Rare Photo of His Son

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 1:47pm

Kate Middletonspent Easter Sunday with the royal family, enjoying the day with her three children, Prince George (age 12), Princess Charlotte (age 10), Prince Louis (age seven), her husband Prince William, King Charles, and Queen Camilla. While the Princess of Wales was busy attending services at St. George’s Chapel, her brother, James Middleton, spent time with his brood—including Kate’s nephew, two-year-old Inigo.

James recently took a break from social media, leaving many to wonder why the Princess of Wales’ brother was notably absent from the limelight. He explained, in a recent Instagram post, “We are back. Many of you have been asking if I’m ok. I have been absent from social media for a while. The truth is, this Lent, I decided to give up social media.”

View this post on Instagram

So, how did it go for James? He continued, “and it was wonderful.” As any parent knows, with everything else you have to do, sometimes it’s absolutely necessary to put your phone down and ignore the online chatter.

James elaborated, providing more details into his relaxing, social media-free respite,  “Sometimes we don’t fully realise the pressure social media puts on us until we take a step back. If I could offer one piece of advice for 2026, it would be to try it yourself; a week, a month, or even longer.”

Now that James is back on social media, what did the doting dad decide to post? Over the holiday weekend, the Middletons (James, that is) also had a visit from the Princess’s mother, Carole Middleton. The British businesswoman made a rare appearance in one of her son’s photos, giving royal watchers a sneak peek into their lives. In one pic, Grandma Carole sits outdoors with her toddler grandchild on her lap, reading Beatrix Potter’sThe Tale of Benjamin Bunny. And really, what better book to share on Easter in England than this iconic option?

Middleton also added a sweet snapshot of Inigo outdoors with the dogs, looking delightfully dapper in stylish suspenders. One commenter noted, “Inigo looks very like George in the first photo.” Of course, they’re talking about the little boy’s cousin, 12-year-old Prince George.

Other fans of the royal-adjacent family added their well-wishes for a happy holiday and applauded James for stepping away from social media with comments such as, “Happy Easter! It is much easier to make memories without the distraction of social media. Hope you are well rested,” and, “What wonderful photos of your beautiful family! That’s such a great thing to give up for Lent, and spending time with people and dogs you love is definitely far more important!”

Southwest Announces 2 Exciting Updates for Travelers—Including a First-Ever Program

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 1:40pm

Great news for wine lovers who are willing to travel for a buttery chardonnay or full-bodied cabernet sauvignon, as Southwest Airlines is expanding its service to California wine country.

The travel provider is launching its 14th route to the Golden State, this time to Santa Rosa’s Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport with connecting flights from San Diego, Las Vegas, Denver, and Burbank.  Additionally, it’s launching its first-ever sip and ship program on April 24, which lets customers check one case of wine at no cost from select West Coast locations, allowing wine lovers to bring back some of their favorite vintages without a hefty shipping fee. A case is defined as a single box or specialized wine suitcase containing up to twelve bottles and weighing no more than fifty pounds.

Punch the Monkey's Mom Abandoned Him, So the Internet Adopted Him

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 1:38pm

Punch the Monkey brought the Internet to tears.

The baby macaque at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan was abandoned by his mother and bullied by his fellow snow monkeys, leading him to cling to a plush orangutan for companionship.

Punch (also called Punch-kun) was named after the late mangaka (manga artist and illustrator) Kazuhiko Katƍ, known by the pen name Monkey Punch.

After being rejected by his mom, Punch had to be bottle- and hand-fed by zoo caretakers.

The cute critter went viral on social media (often with the hashtag #HangInTherePunch), leading traffic at the Ichikawa Zoo to surge with visitors coming to see and hopefully cheer Punch up.

Punch even earned the attention of Oscar winnerChristian Bale, who compared his Frankenstein monster character from The Bride! to the lonely little guy.

Explaining that loneliness is universally experienced by many, Bale said his character, Frank, tried to remove himself from society but eventually gave up and needed a companion badly. "He needs to have a companion, even if it's someone who just sits on the log next to him and never speaks," Bale told BuzzFeed U.K. "Like a He just needs someone. Like a poor little monkey in a lab who's kept by himself. Like little Punch! Little Punch with the orangutan, Little Punch, you can do it! That's all he needs. He just needs a little orangutan."

Don't we all, though?

Here's what is going on with Punch the monkey, Punch the Monkey updates and everything else to know about his situation (including where you can snag a cute orangutan plushie for yourself).

What is the Punch monkey?

Punch is a young macaque at the Ichikawa City Zoo outside of Tokyo who went viral for carrying a plush orangutan toy after being rejected by his mother and fellow snow monkeys.

Punch's mom abandoned him after he was born, leading zoo staff to have to bottle-feed him as a newborn and hand-feed him as he began to grow. What's more, some social media footage from Punch's enclosure showed another macaque pushing him, which shattered pretty much every beating heart on the planet that watched it happen. However, he's doing better now!

What is going on with Punch the monkey?

Here are your latest Punch updates:

Lindsey Vonn loves Punch the Monkey!

Someone sent Lindsey Vonn a plush orangutan like the one Punch has as a get-well gift when she was hospitalized in February 2028.

"Some of my friends don't know what Punch is, but, I mean, everyone has to know what Punch is," Vonn told USA TODAY Sports on April 7, 2026. "Punch is the cutest."

She added that Punch finding a girlfriend (see below) gave her more confidence that she can heal up successfully.

"Always a bright spot," she said. "If Punch can [find love], I can do it!"

Punch the Monkey has a girlfriend!

On March 17, 2026, it was reported that Punch actually found a girlfriend, and our hearts are exploding. Check them out together below—her name is Momo-Chan, and she's a similar to his beloved plushie:

The Ichigawa Zoo said in a statement that Momo-chan and Punch have "grown close." It is probably the greatest love story of all time.

We're not crying, you're crying.

Punch the Monkey's popularity leads to new Ichigawa Zoo regulations.

On March 12, the Ichigawa Zoo announced that largely due to Punch's popularity, they've suspended sales of annual passes for the foreseeable future to prevent overcrowding.

The Ichigawa Zoo also released a guide for donations, noting that they don't actually endorse any products related to Punch and that the only place for legitimate donations that will be used for his care, as well as for the other critters and botanical life at the zoo, is here—so make sure you don't fall for any scams!

Punch the Monkey is getting along better with his macaque mates.

On March 10, the Ichigawa Zoo said in a statement that Punch spends most of every day "peacefully," and that the alleged "bullying" that some visitors witness is merely normal macaque "discipline" that's typical of the species. The zoo's statement also noted that more and more snow monkeys are playing and interacting with Punch overall, indicating that he's going to be just fine!

Punch the Monkey learned a new trick.

It was also revealed on March 3 that he learned a new trick: How to wave.

Is Punch the monkey OK now?

Thankfully, the answer seems to be yes!

According to one spectator from Business Insider, Punch is so popular that his visits from the public are limited to 10 minutes per group to allow everyone to get the opportunity to catch a glimpse at the zoo's Monkey Mountain display, where he lives.

In early March, one of those visitors was K-pop superstar Lisa of BLACKPINK, who documented her venture to Monkey Mountain in her Instagram Stories.

That said, not all of his fellow macaques are on the bandwagon of adoring him. At least one is still pushing him around a bit (or was on March 5, 2026, at least), but thankfully a zookeeper was able to whisk poor Punch away from the bully.

While that may be a bummer, he's also made some friends, even riding on one new pal's back recently.

Will Punch the monkey be okay?

Most likely he'll be fine!

"There have been studies where they have put babies with other juveniles to be raised in juvenile social groups. The truth is, in those situations, they're not as normal as we'd like," According to visiting assistant professor of psychology at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts Lauren Robinson, told NPR's Short Wave. "It's certainly not as ideal as having a mother, because Mom protects the baby. She provides a lot of social relationship education, teaching baby how to communicate rank as well as apologies. It's not an ideal situation. As far as how it's impacting Punch, I think we'll have to wait and see, but I think the zoo is doing the best they can. I don't know if there's a good alternative."

Robinson did note that it would be tricky to predict where exactly Punch will land in the snow monkey hierarchy overall, but there's a lot of of hope for him!

"If he learns quickly and he learns the ritualized aggression and how to apologize and get out of the way, I think he'll do all right," she said. "And it seems like he is getting relationships with other monkeys, so that's where you learn that information. But if he doesn't learn and he misreads information, that's a tougher life. That's probably like getting that education as you go in a more strict way when it comes to snow monkeys. The dominant male will definitely let him know his place."

Robinson added that because Punch is beginning to develop grooming relationships with other monkeys, which is a "really great sign," as is that he hasn't been hit with any "really high-intensity aggression."

"Those are all good signs that he's being brought into the group," she said. "But he's got quite a few years till he reaches adulthood anyway. He's just a juvenile. He's just a baby right now."

Why does Punch the monkey get bullied?

"Having worked with snow monkeys, they're a**holes. Snow monkeys, they have what's called a strict hierarchy, so there is always someone at the top, but someone always ends up at the bottom of the hierarchy," Robinson explained to NPR. "If we get mad at snow monkeys for being aggressive to each other, we might as well be mad at the rain for being wet. It's just who they are as a species."

Why was Punch the monkey abandoned?

It's not entirely known, but also isn't uncommon, according to Robinson.

"It's a tough situation. It does happen, where infants get left by the mother for whatever reason," Robinson told NPR. "We certainly hear about it in other facilities. Research facilities will try to give the baby to a surrogate, which does happen and works sometimes. It's not uncommon, to the extent that we have methods that we can try if there's an appropriate female to take on the infant who's actually interested in doing so. But that doesn't always happen."

Thankfully, footage appears to show that Punch's mother is finally warming up to him.

Why is Punch monkey rejected?

It isn't entirely known by Punch specifically was rejected.

Robinson said, "Without anyone to support him, I don't think there's really any question about what would happen. In the wild, I don't think he'd make it. And that's important to remember as well, that nature is not necessarily kind. Nature is just what it does. There's no need to judge it as, like, a negative or anything. It's just how nature works."

Is Punch the monkey a boy or girl?

Punch is an adorable widdle baby boy.

Is Punch the monkey still alive?

Yes, he is!

Where can I get a Punch the monkey stuffed animal?

While there isn't any official Punch the snow monkey merch available (yet), IKEA carries the Djungelskog orangutan plushie he adores. You can check here for availability near you, but be ready to have to wait a while, because this plushie is more popular than ever.

Is Punch the monkey AI?

Nope, there's no soulless, planet-killing tech behind Punch the Monkey. He is all real, which is likely why his predicament resonates with so many.

Where is Punch the monkey located?

Punch the monkey lives in the Monkey Mountain enclosure of the Ichikawa Zoo outside of Tokyo.

Did Andrew Tate buy Punch the Monkey?

Manosphere influencers Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tatereportedly offered $250,000 to buy Punch the Monkey to get him away from what they believe is an abusive environment, indicating that they view Punch as more human than they do women.

So far, the Ichigawa City Zoo hasn't taken them up on the offer.

New Study Says This 1 Issue Has People Delaying Their Retirement—Guess How Long They're Waiting

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 1:35pm

While many of us spend most of our working life dreaming about the day we can finally retire, a new report says that many Americans are actually pushing back their retirement dates. And it's not because they've fallen in love with their careers, either. Instead, research from Economist Enterprise shows that people are afraid of one thing in particular, and it's a common complaint among almost all Americans right now.

Now, it looks like many people are pushing back their retirement by several years, raising questions about what the next chapter of life will actually look like for many older Americans.

Americans Are Delaying Retirement Because of the Cost of Living

Inflation has become a major pain point for many Americans today. And while that figure is often a temporary one that can rise and fall as various things happen both in and outside the U.S., it's the increased cost of living that has many people approaching retirement age pressing pause on their plans.

According to research from Economist Enterprise, which published its findings with the help of the investment firm Nuveen, around half of the 2,063 full-time employees surveyed said that the cost of living was keeping them from retiring on time.

People Are Pushing Their Retirement Back an Average of 4 Years

When it comes to just how long they are keeping that pause, it looks like the average American says they will work four years longer than they planned to so they can enter retirement in a better financial position.

"People are willing to sacrifice their long-term goals for some of their short-term needs, and that's probably contributing to the cause of delayed retirement," Economist Enterprise project manager Matt Terry told CBS News. "People think, 'OK, I guess I'll have to push it out a few years, because I really need the financial support right now.'"

Financial Issues Have People Borrowing from Their 401(k)

Unfortunately, the study also discovered that a third of the people who responded had also been forced to tap into their 401(k) by way of a hardship withdrawal to fund a variety of expenses. While these types of loans aren't inherently bad and many people use them to fund big expenditures like adoptions or the purchase of a new home, they may point to a broader issue with just how tapped today's workforce is already feeling.

Add into it the fact that many of these people may be nearing retirement age while still having a chunk of their retirement savings still in repayment, and it's easier to understand why so many are expressing trepidation over making the jump into that next chapter of their lives and delaying retirement until they feel more financially secure about entering into a time when they are earning less while also possibly having to spend more on basic necessities, including healthcare.

That ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Cameo Does Come From the Books — Sort Of!

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 1:32pm

There’s no doubt that there are some major changes between The Testaments by Margaret Atwood and the TV series. That’s not surprising, and in the lead-up to the sequel series to The Handmaid’s Tale, it was clear that changes had to happen.

However, there was a moment at the end of the very first episode — three dropped to kick-off the show on April 8, 2026 — that does have standing in the sequel novel. Released in 2019, there was always an unspoken truth in the novel revealed at the very end.

June’s Cameo on ‘The Testaments’ Comes From the Book

At the end of the first episode, we get to see a flash of June Osborne. She’s in Canada, in a shop that belongs to Daisy’s parents. Then in the third episode, we get to see her again, this time with more screentime. She is there to help Daisy, who finds herself in trouble as Gilead comes after her.

ELISABETH MOSS

Now, none of these scenes are exactly from the book. Atwood did include Daisy’s story outside of Gilead, but it wasn’t June who came to her and encouraged her to go into the totalitarian nation as a spy.

The cameo comes at the very end of The Testaments. As Daisy and Agnes get out of Gilead, they come across a woman who claims to be their mother. For those who had only stuck to the books, this was presumed to be Offred, although that character in The Handmaid’s Tale was never officially given a name. That sequel came after the TV series was developed, and we all just assumed that June had come for her daughters, Baby Nichole and Hannah.

There's enough in there to infer that Offred made it out of Gilead after the events of The Handmaid's Tale novel, and even that she could have started working with the resistance. However, the ending is more of a sweet moment between a mother and her two children, who were cut off from her.

THE TESTAMENTS - “Daisy” - An incident on a school trip spurs Daisy’s memories of Toronto, revealing her past and a world shattered by violence. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)
ELISABETH MOSS, LUCY HALLIDAY There Is a Huge Change to ‘The Testaments’

While there is room to allow June to come into The Testaments from the book, there is a huge change that is going to affect everything moving forward. It’s clear that Daisy cannot be June’s second daughter.

Agnes tells us that the war in Boston ended four years ago. That would make June and Nick’s baby only around five or six, while Daisy is around 16 on the show. This was a conscious choice to allow for Daisy and Agnes to connect with each other, but it does affect everything in terms of their relationship and Daisy’s relationship with June.

How that will turn out is still unknown. For now, there are still ways to bring the two girls and Aunt Lydia together to start the fall of Gilead.

Is It Healthier To Drink Bottled Water or Tap Water? Here’s What Health Experts Say

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 1:25pm

Staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to care for your body, yet it’s often overlooked. While there’s no shortage of types of drinks to choose from, nothing beats plain old H20. After all, it’s what more than half of the body is made of.

It’s recommended that women drink 11.5 cups of water a day and men drink 15.5. Short-term, not drinking enough water can lead to symptoms including brain fog, fatigue, constipation, dry skin, low blood pressure and increased heart rate. Long-term, not drinking enough water can lead to gastrointestinal problems (water is key for keeping digestion moving), muscle cramps, dull-looking skin and high blood pressure.

When it comes to drinking water, the main options most people have at their disposal bottled water or tap water. In the U.S., tap water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This law sets enforceable standards for more than 90 contaminants. Bottled water is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration to ensure all bottled water sold in stores is safe and properly labeled.

When it comes to tap water vs. bottled water, which is the healthiest and safest choice? Keep reading for the verdict, straight from water safety experts.

Minerals and Nutrients in Bottled Water vs. Tap Water

Tap water is abundant in the U.S., but do you know what’s in it? Dr. Tao Ye, PhD, a water supply expert and assistant professor at Stevens Institute of Technology’s Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering Department, explains that the main ingredient that tap water has that bottled water doesn’t is fluoride.

“In the U.S., the recommended level for fluoride in community water is .7 milligrams per liter because that concentration helps prevent cavities while minimizing the risk of dental fluorosis [a condition caused by consuming too much fluoride],” Dr. Ye explains. He says that as long as fluoride in tap water is kept at this level, it’s considered a benefit, not a concern.

Dr. Varun Sharma, MD, an internal medicine doctor at MedStar Health, also says that fluoride in tap water is a health benefit, not a risk. “Fluoride in tap water is beneficial because it reduces tooth decay by approximately 25% and is considered one of the top public health achievements of the 20th century by the CDC,” he tells Parade.

The inclusion of fluoride in tap water is the main difference between tap water and bottled water. “Beyond fluoride, there is no universal health-related ingredient that clearly separates tap water from bottled water. Bottled water comes in many forms, including mineral, spring, alkaline, distilled and deionized water, each with its own composition. Tap water can also contain many of the same naturally occurring minerals found in bottled water, depending on the source and treatment. The most consistent public health distinction is fluoridation, since many bottled waters contain little or no fluoride unless it is added,” Dr. Ye says.

Scientific research backs this up. In one study comparing the nutrient content of tap water and various bottled water brands, researchers found that both tap and bottled water contain calcium, magnesium and sodium.

What Has the Higher Risk of Contaminants: Bottled Water or Tap Water?

Maybe you’re more worried about potential contaminants. Which water source is the riskier choice? Dr. Sharma says that both tap water and bottled water have comparable contamination risks overall. That said, he says they bring different risks to the table.

“Tap water may have higher levels of disinfection byproducts and occasional bacterial contamination, [while] bottled water can contain arsenic, lead and uranium—especially spring-sourced bottled water,” he explains.

Dr. Ye says that risk depends on the contaminant and the setting, sharing, “Both tap water and bottled water are regulated and generally safe, so there is no universal winner. In many cases, well-managed tap water offers more transparency because public water systems must provide annual water quality reports, while bottled water is regulated by FDA as a food product."

What About Filtered Water?

Many people use a water filtration system, such as Brita, for extra protection against harmful contaminants. But you may be wondering if it’s filtering out the beneficial nutrients too. Dr. Ye says that it depends on what type of water filtration system you have.

“Not all filters do the same thing. Basic pitcher filters, including most Brita filters, are mainly designed to improve taste and reduce chlorine and some trace contaminants, and they typically do not remove much fluoride. More intensive systems, especially reverse osmosis, can remove fluoride, but they may also remove naturally occurring minerals from the water. So whether fluoride or minerals are filtered out really depends on the type of filtration system being used,” he explains.

Dr. Sharma adds to this, saying, “Water filtration systems do not remove fluoride, but do remove chloride and some heavy metals as well as sand and sediment.”

Should You Worry About Microplastics in Bottled Water?

Microplastics, which are tiny fragments of plastic measuring less than five millimeters, have become a hot topic in the health world. According to a study of more than 200 people undergoing surgery, almost 58% had microplastics or nanoplastics (which are smaller than microplastics) in a main artery, and the individuals who had microplastics in their main arteries had a 450% higher likelihood of having a heart attack, stroke or dying within 34 months of their surgery.

Anything with plastic poses a risk of microplastics, including water in plastic bottles. “People who drink bottled water should at least be aware that microplastics and nanoplastics have been detected in bottled water. However, the science is still developing and current evidence does not yet clearly establish a human-health risk from the levels found in drinking water,” Dr. Ye says. To his point, it’s too early for anyone to know exactly how microplastics may or may not impact health.

While we don’t know the exact impact of microplastics, Dr. Sharma says that drinking tap water instead of bottled water is an easy way to reduce your exposure. “Someone who drinks three bottles of water a day may consume an entire credit card’s worth of plastic more than someone who drank just tap water,” he says.

Dr. Sharma says that most of the microplastic exposure from bottled water comes from the plastic release from twisting the cap on and off. So if you are going to drink bottled water, it’s best to pour it in a glass instead of twisting the cap on and off multiple times. “Storage conditions such as heat, cold, sunlight and mechanical stress can increase microplastic leeching into the water,” Dr. Sharma adds.

The Verdict on Which Is Healthier: Bottled Water or Tap Water

With all this in mind, what is the best choice: Tap water or bottled water? Both experts emphasize that both options are safe. However, if given the choice, they both say that tap water is the healthier option.

“For most people served by a well-run public water system, tap water is usually the healthier default choice. It is publicly monitored, often fluoridated and avoids the plastic packaging and potential plastic-particle exposure associated with bottled water,” Dr. Ye says.

Dr. Sharma adds, “Tap water is healthier than bottled water. It provides fluoride for dental health, beneficial minerals and lower microplastic exposure with comparable safety profiles.”

However, there are times when bottled water is helpful to have on hand. “Bottled water is useful in emergencies, during travel or when local tap water has a specific problem,” Dr. Ye says, adding that it’s still not inherently healthier simply because it is bottled.

We’re fortunate to live in a country where tap water is safe and accessible; it’s easy to take it for granted. Drinking tap water is healthy and cuts down on environmental waste. It’s a win-win!

1969 Classic Hit Turned Into a Timeless Game-Day Anthem

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 1:12pm

The Neil Diamond classic pop song "Sweet Caroline (Good Times Never Seemed So Good)" was originally released as a single in May 1969, and by June of the same year, it peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Fast forward a couple dozen years to 1997 forward, and the catchy song has become a timeless game-day anthem, thanks to the Boston Red Sox and their fans.

Back in the mid-1960s, when Diamond was writing the song "Sweet Caroline" in a Memphis, Tennessee hotel room, there's no way he could have predicted the song would evolve into a sporting day hype song for decades to come.

"Sweet Caroline" began its journey to becoming a Fenway Park institution back in 1997, when a Red Sox employee reportedly played the Diamond song in the stadium at random for a friend who had named their new baby Caroline. Fans responded to the song's catchy, high-energy chorus, and after that, the Red Sox began using it the song more regularly to pump up fanfare in the stands.

In 2002, "Sweet Caroline" was officially inaugurated onto Fenway's ongoing playlist rotation, at the request of then-executive vice president, Charles Steinberg. He decided they'd play the beloved song during the middle of the eighth inning at every home game.

Despite some Red Sox fans expressing some "Sweet Caroline" fatigue over the years, the tradition continues today.

And you'll not only hear this song's "So good, so good!" chant at Red Sox games. The song continues to generate nostalgic game-day energy far and wide at sports events across the globe.

This Iconic California Pier Opened 117 Years Ago—and Still Defines the Coast Today

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 1:02pm

Stretching out into the Pacific Ocean with its instantly recognizable Ferris wheel, the Santa Monica Pier is more than just a scenic landmark; it’s a symbol of California’s coastal culture. First opened in April 1909, this historic pier has evolved from a simple utility structure into one of the West Coast's most visited attractions, blending nostalgia, entertainment, and oceanfront beauty into one unforgettable destination.

The Pier’s Origins

The Santa Monica Pier began with a practical purpose. When it first opened over a century ago, it was designed to carry sewage pipes beyond the breakers into the ocean, hardly the glamorous image it has today. But just a few years later, in 1916, a second, adjacent pier known as the Pleasure Pier transformed the area into a recreational hot spot.

This expansion introduced attractions such as roller coasters, arcades, and carnival games, quickly turning the pier into a destination for those looking to escape the city. Over the decades, the pier endured storms, economic downturns, and even threats of demolition in the 1970s. Thanks to community activism, however, it was saved and restored, cementing its place as a cherished cultural landmark.

At the heart of the pier is Pacific Park, a small amusement park featuring the famous solar-powered Ferris wheel. From the top, you get sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, especially stunning at sunset. The park also includes rides, midway games, and plenty of classic boardwalk snacks.

Just steps away is the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, a smaller but educational stop that highlights marine life native to Southern California. It’s a great break for families or anyone curious about what lies beneath the waves.

Street performers, musicians, and artists line the wooden planks, adding to the pier’s vibrant atmosphere. You’ll also find seafood restaurants, souvenir shops, and casual eateries serving everything from funnel cakes to fish tacos.

At the entrance, don’t miss the historic Route 66 sign, marking the symbolic end of the legendary American highway. It’s one of the most photographed spots on the entire pier.

Whether you’re watching surfers below, listening to live music, or simply enjoying the ocean breeze, there’s a sense of freedom and nostalgia that’s hard to replicate.

It’s also incredibly accessible. Located just steps from Santa Monica Beach, the pier seamlessly connects beachgoers with entertainment. You can spend the day swimming or biking along the coast, then head onto the pier for food and fun without ever needing a car.

The pier’s cultural significance also plays a role. It has appeared in countless films, TV shows, and music videos, making it instantly recognizable even to those who’ve never visited. It’s part of the California identity.

If you’re planning a trip, timing can make all the difference. The pier gets especially crowded on weekends and during summer, so visiting early in the morning or on a weekday can offer a more relaxed experience.

  • Parking near the pier can be limited and expensive, so consider walking, biking, or using public transportation if possible. The nearby paths are perfect for a scenic approach.
  • Bring layers, even on warm days, ocean breezes can make it feel cooler, especially after sunset.
  • And while it’s tempting to rush through the attractions, take time to slow down. Watch the waves, chat with performers, or simply sit and soak in the view. The magic of the Santa Monica Pier isn’t just in what you do, it’s in the atmosphere.

More than a century after it first opened, the Santa Monica Pier continues to define the California coast. It’s a place where history meets modern fun, where locals and tourists alike come together, and where every visit feels a little like stepping into a postcard.

51 Years Ago Today, Beloved ’70s Icon Won the Oscars for a Supporting Role

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 1:00pm

An unforgettable portrayal of a young crime boss earned Robert De Niro his first Oscar Award.

Fifty-one years ago today, the then-30-year-old actor further cemented his place in Hollywood after receiving a major award following his stellar performance as the younger Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II.

On April 8, 1975, the 47th Academy Awards recognized excellence in cinema, honoring the stars and filmmakers who made a lasting contribution and impact on the industry.

At the time, The Godfather Part II dominated the ceremony, winning six awards. From Best Director (Francis Ford Coppola), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Picture, which was also the first sequel to ever win the category.

Although the movie fell short in the Best Actor race, with Al Pacino losing to Harry and Tonto star Art Carney, it was De Niro who secured the Best Supporting Actor category.

Presented by Tatum O'Neal and Ryan O'Neal, it was director Coppola who accepted the award on behalf of the actor.

In his speech, the award-winning filmmaker expressed pride in De Niro, offering a supportive tribute and heartfelt message that recognized his talent and future legacy.

“Well, I'm happy that one of my boys made it. I think this is a very richly deserved award. I think Robert De Niro is an extraordinary actor and he is going to enrich the films that are made for years to come, and I thank you on his behalf,” the director of The Godfather Part II said.

De Niro’s win not only marked a personal milestone but also made history as Marlon Brando, who played the role of Don Vito Corleone in the 1972 masterpiece The Godfather, became the first pair of stars to score an Oscar win for portraying the same character.

Two years after the original movie made its debut, Coppola released the sequel in December 1974, featuring a mix of returning and new cast members.

The Godfather Part II stars Al Pacino, who reprised his role as Michael Corleone, the mafia don, alongside Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, John Cazale, Talia Shire and Morgana King, who all appeared in the original film.

As for De Niro’s role, his character only appeared in the prequel storyline.

His Oscar win was followed by another notable recognition after winning Best Actor at the 53rd Academy Awards for playing boxer Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull.

The 5 Best States For Social Security Tax Breaks In 2026

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 12:55pm

When you finally get to retire, you may think that you'll finally be free of having to pay income taxes. However, not every retiree will get so lucky, and many will still need to cut a figurative check to Uncle Sam when tax time rolls around.

However, there are a few U.S. states where retirees hoping to keep their tax profile low may want to consider. That's because these locations are not only known for not collecting taxes on Social Security, but they also have a few other tax perks that retirees can benefit financially from, giving you more saving power in the next chapter of your life.

Florida

There's a reason why the Sunshine State is a top pick for so many retirees across the country. And while the access to beaches and nearly year-round sunshine make it an obvious choice for the outdoorsy types who are sick of dealing with cold and snowy winters, it's also a veritable tax haven for seniors.

That's because Florida doesn't levy any taxes on Social Security benefits, which means you get to keep 100 percent of your monthly earnings. Not only that, but the state is also known for its lack of an income tax. So, those retirees who want to fill their days by working a few extra hours will also get to keep more of the money they earn.

Some other Florida tax perks include no tax on pensions, 401(k)s, or IRA tax withdrawals, according to Acts Retirement. Combine that with other Florida features that seniors love—including a massive amount of retirement communities that are built to be walkable mini-cities full of like-minded folks—and it's no wonder the state is a dreamy location for seniors.

Pennsylvania

If you don't mind cold winters (or at least, don't mind spending November through February traveling elsewhere), Pennsylvania makes another good place for budget-savvy retirees. In addition to not taxing Social Security payments, PA residents also get the added bonus of having most of their other retirement income exempt from tax collection, including pensions for those ages 60 and above, according to the Acts Retirement.

Additionally, the state has one of the lowest tax rates in the country. The Keystone state has a flat tax rate of just 3.07 percent, helping you keep more of your pre-retirement income in your pocket. And retired homeowners can benefit too, since the state offers eligible retirees the opportunity to apply for a tax rebate.

Mississippi

Lower property taxes are likely top of mind for retirees who plan to continue owning a home in their golden years. That's because property taxes can get quite expensive for those on a fixed income, making it hard to afford aging in place.

However, Mississippi is known for its relatively low prices when it comes to property taxes, according to Smart Access. But that's not all the state has to offer. Like the other spots on the list, Mississippi retirees are also free from paying taxes on retirement income. Add to it the state's mild winters, and you have another alternative for those looking to say goodbye to the snow as they get older.

Related: This State Was Just Named the Worst Place To Retire in the U.S.

Texas

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes your retirement perks! Once again, Texas residents are exempt from paying taxes on retirement income, such as Social Security and retirement benefits, according to Edelman Financial Engines. And, like Florida residents, these residents are also exempt from paying income taxes.

As an added bonus, Texas retirees also have access to a lot of perks when it comes to choosing a place to live, since the state has everything from bustling urban city centers to more rural locations that can offer you a slower pace in retirement. Plus, wild winters mean you can probably leave your snow shovel behind if you decide to relocate here.

Delaware

Lastly, Delaware deserves a spot on the list. Just like some of the other top spots, retirees here are exempt from paying taxes on Social Security income. But, residents in the first state have a few more perks that other places don't have, according to Acts Retirement, including:

  • No sales tax
  • No tax on Railroad Retirement benefits
  • Retirement income exclusion
  • No inheritance tax
  • Low property taxes

Another benefit for Delaware retirees, you're close to everything! The state offers convenient access to cities like New York and Philadelphia, while also being close to beaches and other southern shore points for those looking to get away from the cold. Plus, Washington, D.C., is relatively nearby, which is perfect for those who want to fill their days with the free activities the nation's capital offers.

Bestselling Author’s New Novel Preorders Are Already Skyrocketing — And It’s No Surprise!

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 12:54pm

Some upcoming releases stand out more than others, especially when it comes to a book series. Many will remember the anticipation of waiting for the next Harry Potter novel to come out, and the same happened with the Twilight series of books. The latest anticipated books have been from the Dungeon Crawler series by Matt Dinniman.

His eighth instalment in the series will be released in May 2026. Titled A Parade of Horribles, the story continues Carl and Donut’s journey through their wildest adventure, and it’s not surprising to see that the preorders are soaring off the charts. It’s also not surprising that his previous novels in the series are also ranking high with this in mind — it's just about time!

‘A Parade of Horribles’ Remains High in the Audible Charts

This is one of those audiobook series you need to get. The narration by Jeff Hays brings the chapters to life, and it’s one that you’ll want to listen to while you read along — if you haven’t tried that before, this is a great place to start.

It’s clear that plenty of readers agree about the Audible series. Commencing the week of April 7, which is the start of the week for the Amazon lists, A Parade of Horribles is sitting in third place for most sales. That’s on a preorder and not even a book that can be listened to right now! The week before it was in second place, just behind the newly released Game On by Navessa Allen.

A Parade of Horribles will be released on May 12, 2026, and this is how far in advance fans want to get their hands on it. It's certainly been anticipated for some time, with the seventh book, The Inevitable Ruin, being released back in November 2024.

Ace Books

The ‘Dungeon Crawler’ Series of Books Has Grown in Popularity

Popularity has certainly surged in recent months for the Dungeon Crawler series of books. That’s not surprising, with its hilarious dialogue, connection to the gaming world, and poking fun in a positive way at the apocalypse genre. If the blurb of the first book tells a teen they need to read it, and the storytelling leads to devouring five books within a week, you know it’s done its job.

So, it’s not surprising that the entire series is taking up most of the Top 10 on the “Most Sold Amazon Books” list. Of course, Dungeon Crawler Carl, the first in the series, is at the top, but the others don’t follow too far behind. So far, the eighth book isn’t up there, but that's not all that odd for a preorder.

It's clear that the hype has happened with some of the more recent releases. While the first book has spent 31 weeks on this Top 20 list (albeit not necessarily consecutively), the subsequent books have been there for one or two weeks. It's only a matter of time before the eighth book makes it to the list.

The eighth book sees Carl and Donut on the 10th floor, where they need to complete a selection of normal tasks. That’s odd for it being in a dungeon! Things seem a little too simple, and that’s probably due to the whispers of the “Parade of Horribles” that lives on the 11th floor. The showrunners no longer have any idea what is going on, but the AI certainly does!

The pace is not slowing down, and it's going to be exciting to see how Carl and Donut deal with the latest stage of the adventure.

Queen Elizabeth Had a 'Nervous Breakdown' During This Pivotal Moment for the Monarchy

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 12:49pm

Queen Elizabeth II was known as a pillar of strength, but the monarch struggled privately at times.

Royal biographer Robert Hardman claimed the monarch nearly suffered a “nervous breakdown” during the "extraordinary summer of 1969," which came to a head when her oldest son, then-Prince Charles, was officially crowned the Prince of Wales.

Hardman was asked about his claims of the queen’s mental exhaustion ahead of the release of his book, Elizabeth II: In Private. In Public. The Inside Story, on April 9. Charles’ investiture was looming as "the first made-for-TV royal moment" in color television, among several other historic events around the world.

"It was a very fractious, febrile time. People are really nervous about which way the world is going," Hardman said during the April 7 episode of the Daily Mail's Palace Confidential show, suggesting that the Queen felt overwhelmed by the attention on her and her family.

In addition, the author pointed to the “tense moment” in history marked by the assassinations of Martin Lutheran King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy in America, the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and several terrorist plots within the U.K.

“People were actually being killed in the run-up to and even on the day of this investiture,” Hardman said, noting Queen Elizabeth was especially nervous something would happen to Charles, who was 20 at the time. "The pressure on her, in the run-up to that investiture, I think she was really worried something was going to happen. She has always taken the view that if something happened to her, she'd live with it, die with it, it comes with the territory
This was the threat of terrorism against her son, against his event, and against the family; there was just so much pressure in the run-up to the event that afterwards, it was really interesting.”

Charles’ investiture at Caernarfon Castle went off without a hitch on July 1, drawing attention to Charles' rank and future role in the monarchy as he was presented to the people of Wales as their Prince. He continued to tour around the country after the event. As for the Queen, she “went back to London and retired to her bed, and canceled all engagements for the week.”

The palace said her majesty was suffering from the flu, but Hardman claimed Elizabeth needed a mental reset after the strenuous summer.

"Someone very close to part of her team told me it was nervous exhaustion," Hardman said. "I don't know whether we could call it a full nervous breakdown, because she was back on duty just over a week later, but it was the nearest thing to a nervous breakdown."

Queen Elizabeth is the longest-reigning monarch in British history, ruling for 70 years until her death at age 96 in 2022. She took her role very seriously, even formally dedicating herself to the public on her 21st birthday. She said the simple motto, “I serve,” would help guide her reign.

“I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong,” Elizabeth said in a broadcasted speech from Cape Town, South Africa, in 1947. “But I shall not have strength to carry out this resolution alone unless you join in it with me, as I now invite you to do: I know that your support will be unfailingly given. God help me to make good my vow, and God bless all of you who are willing to share in it.”

The U.S. Just Issued a Surprising Travel Advisory for This Popular European Destination

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 12:39pm

If you’re planning a trip to Italy this year, there’s an important update to keep in mind. The U.S. government has issued a travel advisory for the country, raising questions for tourists about safety, timing, and whether they should change their plans.

Before you cancel anything, here’s the reality: advisories like this are more common than you might think, and they don’t necessarily mean you should avoid traveling altogether.

What the Travel Advisory Means

The advisory comes from the U.S. Department of State, which regularly evaluates safety conditions worldwide. Italy is currently under a Level 2 advisory, which means travelers should “exercise increased caution.”

This level is not uncommon for major European destinations. It typically reflects general concerns such as:

  • Pickpocketing and petty theft
  • Crowded tourist areas
  • Occasional protests or public gatherings

In other words, this is not a “do not travel” warning; it’s a reminder to stay aware, especially in busy cities.

Why Italy Is on the Advisory List

Italy remains one of the most visited countries in the world, drawing millions each year to cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice. With that popularity comes increased risk of petty crime, particularly in high-traffic areas such as train stations, public transit, and major attractions.

Pickpocketing is the primary concern, especially in crowded places like:

  • The Colosseum in Rome
  • Busy metro lines
  • Popular plazas and markets

There may also be occasional demonstrations or strikes, which can disrupt transportation or access to certain areas, but these are typically localized and short-lived.

Understanding the Terrorism Risk

Another key reason for the advisory is the potential risk of terrorism, though it’s important to understand what that actually means. According to the State Department, there is a general risk of terrorist activity in Italy, and attacks could occur with little or no warning, particularly in crowded public places.

Common potential targets include:

  • Tourist attractions
  • Transportation hubs (like train stations and airports)
  • Restaurants, hotels, and shopping areas
  • Religious sites and major public events

However, it’s equally important to note that Italy has not experienced recent major terrorist attacks, and the advisory reflects broader European security concerns rather than a specific, imminent threat.

Is It Still Safe to Travel to Italy?

Yes, Italy is still considered a safe destination for tourists. A Level 2 advisory doesn’t indicate widespread danger. Instead, it suggests travelers take standard precautions, similar to those you would in any major city around the world.

Millions of people continue to visit Italy safely each year, and most trips go off without a hitch.

How This Could Impact Your Trip

While the advisory isn’t a major red flag, it may affect your travel experience in small ways:

  • More vigilance required: You’ll want to be more mindful of your belongings
  • Crowd awareness: Tourist hotspots may feel busier and require extra caution
  • Transportation disruptions: Occasional strikes could impact trains or buses

The key takeaway? Your trip likely won’t be disrupted but being prepared will make it smoother.

Smart Travel Tips for Visiting Italy

If you’re heading to Italy, here are a few practical ways to stay safe:

  •  Protect your belongings: Use anti-theft bags, keep valuables secure, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Stay alert in crowded areas: Pickpocketing is most common there—especially on public transportation.
  • Trust your instincts: If a situation feels off, remove yourself—basic awareness goes a long way.
Why Advisories Like This Matter

Travel advisories aren’t meant to scare you, but rather, they’re meant to inform you. Countries like France and Spain often carry similar advisory levels for the same reasons. It’s less about danger and more about encouraging travelers to stay alert in busy, high-traffic environments.

The travel advisory for Italy is a reminder, not a warning to stay away. Italy remains one of the most rewarding destinations in the world, offering unmatched history, culture, food, and scenery. With a little extra awareness and preparation, you can enjoy everything the country has to offer without concern.

GMA Names 'Gripping' Debut Novel as April Book Club Pick: 'One of My Favorites of the Year'

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 12:23pm

On April 7, 2026, Caro Claire Burke's highly anticipated first novel, Yesteryear, hit shelves. The emerging author's first book had already been ranked as Goodreads' No. 1 "breakout novel," indicated by the number of times it was added to readers' "want-to-read" shelf. GMA proved it had been paying attention to the buzz by announcing that the satirical thriller would be its April Book Club pick.

Fans who've read it as well as those who plan to chimed in on Instagram to praise the news.

"Wonderful pick. What a brilliant book!" one person wrote, as another commented, "Reading it now and loving it!"

Critics and authors echoed the praise, with Hannah Deitch, author of Killer Potential, writing, "Yesteryear is unapologetically political fiction in the tradition of The Stepford Wives or The Handmaid’s Tale. Burke takes us right into the belly of the beast. Enraging, thrilling—often grimly funny in the way of good satire, but still intensely humane. Easily one of my favorites of the year.”

Yesteryear, the "gripping" and "electrifying" breakout novel, focuses on "trad wife" Natalie Heller Mills, a social media influencer who seems to have the perfect, pioneer-style life. She lives in a farmhouse with her six kids and her cowboy husband, using social media to share pictures of her as a homemaker who collects her own eggs and milk and makes everything from scratch.

In reality, she has a team of nannies, producers, and high-tech gadgets, a fact she carefully hides from her 8 million followers. But when she wakes up in the year 1855, the brutal expectations and demands are a sharp wake-up call that this isn't the life she wants. She has no idea how she got there, but she's determined to find a way back to her own time.

"There is no electricity, none of the amenities that she has grown accustomed to, and it grows old very quickly to her," Burke told GMA. She went on to describe it as "a psychological thriller with social commentary, similar to The Stepford Wives or even American Psycho."

"I downloaded TikTok on a whim and found myself in conversations about trad wives through the lens of feminism and media literacy and American politics," she continued. "I fell in love with the topic because of how much I related to it. I think so much of womanhood is about performance, regardless of how you view the world. And I related very deeply to the feeling of trying to understand your ambition, as a woman."

Despite readers just getting their hands on the book, expectations and excitement have been building around it for two years. In July 2024, an auction for Yesteryear saw Amazon MGM, Apple, Universal, and Paramount battling for the rights, according to Deadline. After Amazon MGM won, Anne Hathaway signed on to produce the film and star as Natalie.

Hathaway has been busy promoting The Devil Wears Prada 2, but she showed her excitement for Yesteryear in Dec. 2025, sharing a video of her unboxing a Yesteryear Ranch box that contained the novel, candles, and a quote, "A man may work from sun to sun, but a woman's work is never done."

Season 1 'American Idol' Star Splits From Wife After 15 Years of Marriage

Wed, 04/08/2026 - 12:23pm

Justin Guarini married his wife, Reina Guarini, several years after appearing on the inaugural season of American Idol. However, after over a decade of marriage, the pair has decided to go their separate ways.

According to court records obtained by TMZ, Justin filed for divorce in June 2024. After more than a year, the couple reached a settlement in December 2025. However, the split was not made public until now.

Justin initially rose to fame when he appeared on the first season of American Idol in 2002. He came in second place while Kelly Clarkson took the crown. Since then, he has appeared in multiple Broadway productions, including Wicked, Once Upon a One More Time, and American Idiot. He has also starred in several Diet Dr Pepper commercials, playing a rockstar mascot called Lil’ Sweet.

Justin met Reina in high school when he was only 15, but the pair did not get together until years later when they reconnected. He proposed during a trip to Walt Disney World when they visited to film content for the American Idol Experience, a now-closed theme park attraction that allowed park guests to compete in a singing competition. Justin proposed after a fireworks show and held the wedding in his hometown in 2009.

Justin and Reina share two sons, William and Asher. He also has a stepdaughter named Lola. According to a 2023 interview with Hello Magazine, all of his children love to perform, like him.

“All of them can sing and enjoy entertainment,” Justin said. “But my daughter and my middle son are a little shy or more into sports. My youngest Asher, is so perfect for the stage. He is completely creative. He's a dancer, he loves to sing, he loves to watch funny videos on YouTube and then recreate them. He is so primed and ready, and when he came to the [Once Upon a One More Time] show during a rehearsal, I got him up on stage, and I showed him what I see. It was a real watershed moment for me.”

Although news of the divorce has just been made public, Justin has already entered a new relationship with Kim Phillips, a business coach.
