1995 Rock Song, Written by One of the 'Best Supergroups' of All Time, Remains a Classic 31 Years Later
In 1995, supergroup Mad Season delivered one of its most enduring and recognizable songs with “River of Deceit.”
A Seattle supergroup comprised of Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley as its lead vocalist, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready on lead guitar, The Walkabouts’ John Baker Saunders on bass and Screaming Trees’ Barrett Martin on drums, the quartet released its debut album, Above.
The band introduced itself with the lead single “River of Deceit,” a brooding grunge track written by Staley that was directly inspired by the 1923 philosophical work The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, which he was reading during the recording sessions.
Following the vocalist’s death in 2002, Martin shared in his eulogy how Staley viewed music as more than entertainment, a philosophy that is reflected in the band's songs.
“My best memory of Layne was when we were making the Above album,” the drummer said, adding “He was in the studio lounge reading Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet. I had read it a few years earlier, so we started talking about what it meant to be an artist and have a spiritual message. I don’t need to get into the specifics of the conversation, but suffice it to say that Layne Staley felt as though he was on a spiritual mission through his music.”

“River of Deceit” not only peaked at No. 2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart but also landed at No. 9 on the Modern Rock Tracks (now Alternative Airplay) chart and No. 12 on Canada's RPM Rock/Alternative chart.
Despite the band’s brief five-year run before officially disbanding in 1999 following the death of Saunders, the supergroup continues to leave a lasting legacy through its influential music.

The enduring appeal of “River of Deceit” goes beyond that.
In addition to the Mad Season joining the ranks of Rolling Stone’s“best supergroups” of all time, “River of Deceit” was recognized as one of the “classic rock deep cuts of the 1990s.”
As mentioned by American Songwriter, the publication emphasized how the track highlights the “blues rock elements” that gave it “more of a classic rock feel.”

It’s hard to believe that Alanis Morissettewas once a dance-pop artist before the release of her third studio album, Jagged Little Pill. The project revealed a completely different side of the Canadian-born artist as she embraced a more alternative rock sound with songs like “You Learn,” “All I Really Want,” and “You Oughta Know,” the latter of which served as her breakthrough hit.

"It wasn't a popular choice. Nobody wanted 'You Oughta Know' first," Morissette revealed of releasing the song as a single, during a podcast interview on Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso, according to People. "[Record executives] were terrified of that song. And I remember [thinking] at the time that I would much rather come out being maybe misinterpreted, maybe reduced — maybe there's some triggering going on — but we're starting on a note that is intense."
Released on Jul 10, 1995, and written alongside Glen Ballard, who also produced the track, “You Oughta Know” peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became an international hit. The track also topped the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart, where it remained at No. 1 for five consecutive weeks, setting a record for a female artist that stood until 2013.
The popular post-grunge breakup anthem finds Morissette delivering plenty of angst while ruminating over a failed relationship. In the song, she speaks to her ex as if she’s having a conversation with him, yet the lyrics serve as a powerful emotional release rather than a true attempt to reconnect with her former flame.
After releasing the song, Morissette, according to Songfacts, admitted she wrote it about a real person, but has never revealed the true identity of the person who inspired the song. One of the most persistent rumors surrounding the song’s subject is that it was inspired by actor Dave Coulier of Full House.
Coulier has also previously claimed the song was about him, telling the Calgary Herald, per the outlet, "I listened to the song over and over again, and I said, 'I think I have really hurt this person.'”

“I tried to contact her,” he added of a conversation he shared with Morissette. “I finally got a hold of her. And at the same time, the press was calling, and saying, 'You want to comment on this song?' I called her, and I said, 'Hi. Uh, what do you want me to say?' And she said, 'You can say whatever you want.' We saw each other and hung out for an entire day. And it was beautiful. It was one of those things where it was kind of like, 'We're good.'"
Aside from the charts, “You Oughta Know” went on to earn two Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Additionally, the song has made several lists, including Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list in 2021.
As for the album, Jagged Little Pill, the project, produced by Ballard, was a massive global phenomenon, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time and winning multiple Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
'Ransom Canyon' Season 2 Ending Explained: Do Staten and Quinn End Up Together?
Last year, Netflix went out west for its own take the Yellowstone-esque drama in Ransom Canyon. Starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, the show based on the novels by Jodi Thomas immediately rounded up loyal fans like cattle. It was only a matter of when, not if, we'd get the chance to head back to the titular town for more love triangles, game-changing twists, and ten-gallon hats. And we got just that on July 23, with the release of Season 2.

The arrival of Yancy's (Jack Schumacher) wife Sidney (Heidi Grace Engerman) has left Ellie (Marianly Tejada) reeling — literally. After realizing she had been tricked into signing divorce papers, she went to her now-ex's house to confront him, only to scare a pregnant Ellie so bad she fell off the porch. Luckily, all was well for both mother and child, as she was immediately rushed to the hospital and gave birth to a baby girl, Isabella.
Unfortunately, despite the wonderful bundle of joy in Yancy and Ellie's lives, it immediately became trouble in paradise. The cops weren't able to find Sidney after the assault, and a paranoid Ellie decides to discharge herself from the hospital. When Yancy arrives home, she rebuffs him, telling him to leave and promising to protect her daughter from the "darkness" that he brings. While clearly devastated, Yancy indeed leaves, having just lost the family he fought so hard to get.
Lauren's (Lizzy Greene) forbidden romance with Lucas (Garrett Wareing) was complicated immensely in Season 2. The primary reason is that Lucas's brother, Kit (Casey W. Johnson), became the third point of a newfound love triangle. Lauren's father, Sheriff Dan (Philip Winchester), heavily disapproves of his daughter consorting with people from the other side of the tracks, especially with such a burnout like Kit. And so he gives him an offer: Go to Wyoming, settle down on another ranch, and start over with a new life.
Lucas, meanwhile, is arrested for drunk driving, having spiraled with all the complications involving Lauren and Kit. When he admits to her that he had slept with Ashley (Jennifer Ens), that seems to be the final straw between the two. Unfortunately, she faces even more heartbreak when Kit tells her he can't be with her. And, with him taking Dan's offer, it seems like he was ready to make a clean break.
Lauren attempted to see Kit again, only to find a sulking Lucas. In that moment, he heeded the advice Staten had given him earlier, realizing, despite his love for Lauren, he had to let her go. He tells her that Kit is catching a bus out of town, and she catches him just in time, kissing him and telling him, "I’m not letting you go."
Of course, despite all this relationship drama, the one at the forefront is the torrid "will-they-won't-they" between Staten (Duhamel) and Quinn (Kelly). The two have been weaving in and out of each other's hearts for decades at this point, but have never officially gotten together, whether it was due to partners they had at the time, or the unwillingness to open themselves up. At the end of Season 1, Quinn was heading off to New York, making them both physically and emotionally distant with one another.
In the penultimate episode, Staten pulled away from Quinn yet again, saying he did not want a future with her. So Quinn found a new passion: Focusing on her work at Gracie's, Ellie's situation, and finding the perfect location for her next music festival. To help secure the funds, she goes to her mother, Claire (Patricia Clarkson), and when the matriarch learns that she may be finally done with Staten, she decides to intervene. She approaches Staten, giving him a letter to Quinn that she had intercepted years ago. And she also comes with some sage wisdom: Love is a canyon, and the best way to get to the other side is with the person you love.
In that moment, Staten finally reconciles with the feelings he has — and has had — for Quinn. He asks her to meet him at the cabin, just as he did decades ago, to show that she wants to commit. And, after a painfully tense wait, she finally arrives, causing him to launch into a heartfelt monologue.
"I think you were right about fate," he says. "It kept us apart for a reason. You needed to go to New York, we needed other loves, other lives. Amalah and Randall, I don’t regret a single moment of my life with them, not even the pain of losing them. I think that everything that happened, I believe, is fate. Fate was making us ready for each other."
And we were certainly ready for Staten and Quinn to make it official! The two end the season as a happy couple, waking up the next morning blissfully in each other's arms. Staten gives Quinn a key to the Double K ranch he owns, opening both his stables and heart to a new person. He ends the season asking, "What do you say we start forever right now?" And whether we have to wait forever for Season 3 of Ransom Canyon, we have quite the satisfying ending to make the wait all the sweeter.

’90s Hardcore Frontman Announces New Solo Project With “A Lot of” Collaborations
Evan Seinfeld, the founding frontman and bassist of hardcore/metal band Biohazard, just announced that he plans to release new music in 2027.
According to Blabbermouth, the rocker spoke with Bulgarian journalist Elena Rosberg, sharing that he’s working on a solo project he described as “maybe trap metal" that blends electronic music with "a hardcore attitude.”

[It's] another completely separate musical project. A little different genre.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Seinfeld said that fans can expect “a lot of” collaborations with fellow musicians but stopped short of really confining the new project to a genre.
"To give you a little teaser ... I don't know what to call [the style of music] exactly,” he said. “I mean, nobody knew what to call Biohazard. We thought we were a hardcore band, but all the hardcore bands said, 'Nah, man, you guys are metal.' And all the metal bands [were] saying, 'No, no, you guys are hardcore.' And then everybody's saying, 'For some reason you guys are, like, rapping, and we don't even know what to say, but we like it.'”
Formed in Brooklyn in 1987, Biohazard consisted of Evan Seinfeld, Bobby Hambel, and Anthony Meo, with Billy Graziadei joining shortly after. They were pioneers of fusing hardcore punk with thrash metal and hip-hop.
In 1990, drummer Danny Schuler replaced Meo before the release of their self-titled debut album. Their follow-up album, Urban Discipline in 1992, featuring the anthem “Punishment,” sold more than 1 million copies worldwide, while State of the World Addressin 1994 further cemented their international success and birthed another anthem, “How It Is.”
Previous key collaborations included acts like Onyx and Cypress Hill for the Judgment Night soundtrack.
Following departures, breakups, and band conflict, Biohazard went on hiatus in 2005, but reunited in 2008. Four years later, Seinfeld, Graziadei, Hambel, and Schuler released Reborn in Defiance. Shortly after, however, Seinfeld bowed out. But another reunion was in the works, with the guys getting back together in 2022 for good.
Today, Biohazard continues to tour and record, with Seinfeld now sharing that he has a solo project on the way. So, staying busy it seems.

’80s Rock Band Releases First New Music in Over 35 Years
A beloved rock band from Melbourne, Australia, released its first official new music in more than three decades, timing it to come out shortly before the start of a special 40th anniversary tour.
The Huxton Creepers have finally come out with their first new recordings since 1990, with the double A-side single "Opposites Attract" and "Midnight TV." The single is available digitally and as a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl through Cheersquad Records & Tapes.
The new music is a reunion of original members Rob Craw, Matthew Eddy and Archie Law. Also joining is guitarist Julian Matthews of The Stems, who will be touring with the Huxton Creepers on the band's special 40th anniversary tour this summer.
Talking about what inspired the new songs, Craw said that "Opposites Attract" was an homage of sorts to the British Beat's song "Save It for Later." He said, "One of my favourite songs but in no way did I wish to just slavishly replicate it but rather just let it seep in as an almost subconscious driver."
As for "Midnight TV," Eddy shared that it was also inspired by another artist's song. In this case, it was the New York Dolls' "Lonely Planet Boy." Eddy explained that the original song's prominent riff "morphed into a sort of driving hypnotic rhythm" in the new Huxton Creepers' song.

The new double single follows a recent vinyl reissue of the band's debut album, 1986's 12 Days to Paris. The record also got its first-ever official digital release. The upcoming tour is celebrating the anniversary of the album's release.

Iconic '70s Rocker, With No. 1 Hit Song, Turns 80
The musician who brought an oboe into glam rock is turning 80 with no plans to stop playing.
Andy Mackay, the saxophonist, oboist and founding member of Roxy Music, celebrates his 80th birthday on July 23. His playing helped give the group a sound unlike anything else emerging from British rock in the early '70s.
Mackay was also part of the band's greatest commercial success. In 1981, Roxy Music released its cover of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" after first performing the song as a tribute following Lennon's death. The recording spent two weeks at No. 1 in the U.K., becoming the band's only single to top the chart.
Born in Lostwithiel, Cornwall, Mackay attended the University of Reading from 1965 to 1968. He later admitted that music held more of his attention than his studies during those years, telling Classic Pop that he spent much of his time "listening to music" and described himself as "alternative."
Mackay joined Roxy Music in 1971 and introduced his friend Brian Eno to the developing lineup. The band's self-titled debut was released the following year, followed by its first Top 10 hit, "Virginia Plain." Mackay's saxophone and oboe became central to the group's identity, while his songwriting contributions included "A Song for Europe" and the hit "Love Is the Drug."
Roxy Music continued releasing albums throughout the decade before reaching another high point with Avalon in 1982. The group stepped away from touring the following year, but reunited in 2001 and continued performing periodically. Mackay joined his bandmates when Roxy Music was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019, then returned for the group's 50th anniversary tour in 2022.
Away from Roxy Music, Mackay recorded solo albums, composed music for television and film and wrote a book on electronic music. He also returned to school later in life to study theology, an interest that eventually influenced his orchestral project 3Psalms.
Mackay has remained active through his work with longtime bandmate Phil Manzanera. Their latest release, AM/PM Soho Live, came out in 2025, and the saxophonist made his plans for the future clear in a recent interview.
"As long as I can physically hold the instrument and blow it, I don't see stopping playing," Mackay said.
After more than five decades of challenging what a rock band could sound like, Mackay enters his 80s with the same curiosity that helped set Roxy Music apart from the beginning.

’90s Metal Band Announces New Album 32 Years After Debut
Hatebreed is officially back with new music as the metal veterans announce the upcoming release of their new album, Fatal Paradox.
More than three decades after their debut, the Grammy-nominated Connecticut band continues to push forward with new music.
Interestingly, their latest material is set to deliver a more intense, fast-paced sound while staying true to their signature style.
In a social media update released by record label BLKIIBLK, Hatebreed announced that Fatal Paradox will be released on Nov. 6.
Along with the announcement, the band kept the excitement going by releasing the album's first single, "Kill Count Increase."
The track blends thrash metal and hardcore punk, featuring heavy guitar riffs.

“There's always a tinge of metal to HATEBREED,” he explained, adding, “I think a lot of people try to kind of pigeonhole us as a hardcore band, but I think over the years we've just gone way more metal. There is still the hardcore punk vibe to us, but I think the new stuff is way more metal, thrashy, fast, SLAYER-esque, if I may use that term. That's kind of the direction we're going in right now, but there's still a lot of groove to it. It's definitely the heaviest stuff that we've written to date.”

Oprah Winfrey just rewatched her now-viral 2021 interview with Meghan Markle. And fans still have some pretty strong thoughts.
The media mogul recently looked back at her career, talking to Vanity Fair about her most memorable moments—including ‘the’ interview.
Back in 2021, when Oprah’s CBS special originally aired, Markle and Prince Harry opened up about their decision to step away from their royal duties and move to California. The couple spoke out about their battle with the British tabloids and Harry’s family.
But allegations against the royals and inconsistencies in some of Meghan and Harry’s accounts led to a backlash against the couple and Oprah, making the interview one of the most legendary in recent history.
Harry told Oprah, “I need to do this for my family. This is not a surprise to anybody. It’s really sad that it’s got to this point, but I’ve got to do something for my own mental health, for my wife’s, and for Archie’s as well, because I could see where this was headed.”
Meghan shared, “I’ve always valued independence. I’ve always been outspoken, especially about women’s rights. I mean, that’s the sad irony of the last four years is I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice. And then I was silent”
And that’s when Oprah asked the question that would lead to a legendary soundbite, “Were you silent or were you silenced?” And Markle replied, “The latter.”
As Oprah reminisced about the interview, she revealed, “They didn’t know, obviously, anything that I was going to ask them. But I had said to them ahead of time, ‘I’m going to cover everything.’ This interview took three and a half hours…I was just carefully trying to go through everything that had come up in the past.”
She continued, “I wanted to be clear, because was she silenced? Were people telling her not to talk? Were people? That’s why I said that. I said it for clarification because I didn’t want later to hear, ‘Well, no, it wasn't that. It really was that I was silenced. They wouldn't let me talk.’ So it was all for clarification.”
When Vanity Fair posted a snippet of this clip on the magazine’s Instagram page, fans were quick to give their opinions. One pointed out, “Recollections may vary!” while others added, “This was not an interview. This was a story line”, “Too bad Oprah didn’t clarify the other tidbits (lies) in that interview,” and “Oprah could have used some fact checking.”
It looks like Winfrey's rewatching of the controversial 2021 interview sparked its own 2026 controversy.

'Big Brother 28' Spoilers: Who Won the Block Buster and Who Was Evicted in Week 2 Tonight?
Oftentimes, the first couple of weeks of a Big Brother season are when it's at its most "kumbaya." Everyone's becoming acquainted with their new roommates, and trying to avoid sticking their necks out for fear of becoming an early target. But Season 28, apparently, seems to be built just a bit differently.
Power remained in the "reality icons'" hands, as Rick Devens continued Survivor's reign over the Big Brother house. And, with the "egg-couraging" of Angela Murray, he drew a line in the sand. Forming a new majority alliance, he went after Rome Seymour, even using his nomination speech to call out the pickleball coach, leaving some of his allies hanging out to dry. The event soon got hijacked, however, as Angela used this time to air her grievances against Jason De Puy, putting his scheming and messy gameplay out in the open. Then Rome made a snide comment to Haley Thogmartin, leading several men in the house to stand up and defuse the situation. And it's only Week 2!

Rome SeymourThe first week of Big Brother 28, Rome was building an empire. With his social skills and a round of safety, he went to work building a number of meaningful connections. And the pickleball coach was also quick to court Lyric Medeiros, with their showmance becoming surprisingly hot and heavy early on. One night, Rome cockily sat in the backyard, declaring he was the president of the game (or perhaps the emperor). And, like arguably the most famous emperor in history, he had no idea he would soon experience multiple backstabs.
When Devens won HoH, Rome thought he was in a great spot. And so he went to the Survivor legend with a packed list of people he wanted to protect. Meanwhile, Angela saw the influence that he was building, and was looking to stomp that out before it grew too big. And so she not only convinced Devens to put up Rome's closest allies, but completely blow up his game by calling out the people he chose not to protect. A flood of emotions soon followed, from immediate anger to subsequent despair. But the feeling that won out, at the end of the day, was love. Devens used the Veto on Lyric, officially completing the backdoor. And, when he lost the Block Buster competition, all roads led to Rome leaving the Big Brother house.
Jason narrowly missed out on winning the Veto by mere seconds. But he was able to get his puzzle redemption days later, taking home an easy win in the BB Block Buster.

Hollywood just handed out one of its most coveted honors.
On Thursday, July 23, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced the Hollywood Walk of Fame Class of 2027, and the lineup is packed with A-listers. Ming-Na Wen, Sheila E. and Chamber CEO Ron Frierson revealed the honorees at a live press conference at Funko Hollywood.
Chosen from hundreds of nominations across six categories, the class was selected in May and ratified by the Chamber's board on July 22. Selection chairman Peter Roth called the Walk of Fame "one of the most enduring symbols of achievement in entertainment."
Leading the class are punk pioneers The Ramones, honored 50 years after their debut album helped define the genre, and '90s sitcom favorite Lisa Kudrow. They join current stars like Pedro Pascal across the six categories below.

'90s 'Batman: The Animated Series' Villain Spinoff Movie Promises a Tragic Antihero
During DC Comics' Jim Lee and Friends panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, DC Studios surprised guests with an appearance from director James Watkins (See No Evil) to talk about his take on Clayface. The upcoming Batmanvillain solo spin-off horror movie starring Tom Rhys Harries is just one of the most anticipated releases of the current James Gunn and Peter Safran-era of DC Universe films.
The director told Deadline at SDCC 2026 the story of how he got on board with DC Studios' new heads: "They came to me. They sent me the script by Mike Flanagan, which I read and thought, 'This is really interesting.' The journey of this, the bones of this, is a monster story, a story of identity, of who we are, and how we define ourselves," he said, referring to the horror maestro behind The Haunting of Hill House and how his writing hooked him.
"This is a story of a guy who had built up this career, and then it gets smashed away, and how he tried to get it back. It’s a very relatable human thing. But also sort of mythic, almost going back to classic storytelling, this sort of shape shifter story, and Frankensteinstory of it all."

Mike Flanagan's Clayface script takes heavy inspiration from the character's iconic turn in Bruce Timm, Eric Radomski, and Paul Dini's exploration of the Caped Crusader's mythos in Batman: The Animated Series.
In the '90s generation of after-school shows on WB Kids, the lore expanded to make Matt Hagen more of a tragic figure in Batman's rogues' gallery. It gave the actor-gone-bad a fan-favorite origin story, with subsequent arcs around how he is changed psychologically by the freak accident that leaves him with a horrific figure composed of clay that allows him to transform into any shape.

What I really responded to in all the previous iterations was the sadness, the melancholy, the heartbreak, and give it a tragic dimension, trying to find that journey about Hagen being rejected and trying to find his way. The duality of Clayface is really interesting, he’s antihero but not wholly a villain."

Despite the film's emotional core, it's still a horror film that "takes people on a real roller coaster journey," the director assured, citing Cronenberg's The Fly as inspiration, promising the film will "give people a lot of ick and a lot of gore" through his star Tom Rhys Harries' performance. On why he cast the White Lines actor, Watkins revealed, "There’s something slightly Clayface about Tom’s face," and praised his ability to transform "between being this kind of urchin, orphan quality of vulnerability that sometimes you can play, but also by a shift [to] a manic smile that can become slightly unnerving and could do all of that within a register of keeping it real. He just felt like Matt Hagen."

Clayface will be followed by Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow in 2027 and Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel in 2028. However, don't expect them all to be fully connected in any way, as the studio aims to tell stories that won't always be constrained by shared universes.
