Florida has recorded its first death of the year linked to a dangerous bacteria commonly associated with seafood and coastal waters, according to state health officials.

The bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus, is often called "flesh-eating" because in severe cases it can cause necrotizing fasciitis, a fast-moving infection that destroys skin and muscle tissue. It's most commonly linked to raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters, though people can also become infected through exposure to warm, brackish water where rivers or streams meet the sea.

Florida has confirmed 12 cases so far this year as of July 30, along with one death in Palm Beach County. That's a notable pace compared to last year, when the state recorded 33 cases and five deaths over the full year.

Health officials stress that infections remain rare, but they can escalate quickly. Symptoms often begin within 24 hours of exposure and can include fever, chills, rapidly spreading skin redness or swelling, fluid-filled blisters, and confusion. In serious cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and organs within hours, and roughly 1 in 5 people who contract it will die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC estimates 100 to 200 cases of vibriosis caused by this specific bacteria are reported nationally each year, with most concentrated in Gulf Coast states. Other, more common strains of vibrio bacteria cause roughly 80,000 additional infections annually across the country.

Experts note that severe weather, including hurricanes and flooding, has previously been linked to spikes in cases, as floodwaters can spread the bacteria into new areas.

To reduce risk, health officials recommend cooking seafood thoroughly, washing hands after handling raw shellfish, and avoiding exposure to coastal or brackish water if you have any open cuts, scrapes, or recent piercings. Anyone with a compromised immune system or a condition like liver disease or diabetes is considered at higher risk and is advised to take extra precautions, including wearing protective footwear near coastal waters.

Only one entry is allowed per household, and everyone attending must be at least 16 years old. Winners are selected completely at random and receive two tickets to a random show date and time. Season 52 is reported to premiere September 26, which would make it the show's earliest season debut since Season 38 kicked off on September 15, 2012, though NBC has not yet confirmed the date.

Chloe Fineman became the first cast member to announce her departure last month after seven seasons on the show. She shared an emotional statement on Instagram on July 16, confirming her departure.

Since most SNL contracts expire August 1, more cast news could follow in the coming weeks, as reported by Latenighter. Despite that, a finalized lineup for the new season likely won't be confirmed until sometime later.

August is also typically when producer Lorne Michaels and his team hold in-studio auditions, a process that's already underway. The Latenighter also reported on Saturday, August 1 that show representatives were spotted scouting talent at Montreal's Just for Laughs festival last week.

Lorelai (pronunciation law·ruh·lai) is climbing fast up the list of America's most popular baby names, reaching its highest ranking in decades. It's a distinctive name most people still associate with one place — Stars Hollow, the fictional Connecticut town at the center of the show.

Lauren Graham played Lorelai Gilmore, the fiercely independent mother at the heart of Gilmore Girls. Alexis Bledel starred as her daughter, who was also named Lorelai but known to everyone as Rory. Many of the parents naming babies today grew up watching Lorelai and Rory themselves, and now they're passing that same love for the show on, both to their kids and, in a growing number of cases, straight into their birth certificates. Lorelai has become one of the fastest-rising names for newborn girls in the United States. Baby registry platform Babylist recently highlighted the name as a trending choice. The official Social Security Administration rankings show that Lorelai reached No. 333 among girls’ names in 2025. It ranked No. 403 one year earlier, meaning it climbed 70 places.

That ranking does not mean 333 out of every 1,000 babies received the name. It means Lorelai was the 333rd most frequently chosen name for girls born in the United States during 2025. The SSA compiles its annual list using information submitted by families when they apply for Social Security numbers for their newborns.

How Popular Is the Name Lorelai?

A total of 926 baby girls were named Lorelai in 2025, up from 786 in 2024, according to Nameberry’s review of SSA data. The alternative spelling Lorelei is also gaining ground. It rose 13 positions, moving from No. 454 in 2024 to No. 441 in 2025. The government data does not explain why parents selected a particular name, so it cannot confirm that every new Lorelai was named after the show. Still, the timing makes the connection difficult to miss.

Fans regularly discuss the name on parenting forums, while social media is filled with children whose rooms, clothes, and birthday parties carry a Stars Hollow theme.

Two psychologists previously told Parade about the significance of the very end of an interaction, with Dr. Cynthia Shaw, PsyD, highlighting the "Peak-end Rule," which researchers have described as "a memory heuristic in which the most emotionally salient part of an experience (i.e., peak) and conclusion of an experience (i.e., end) are weighted more heavily in summary evaluations."

Because we tend to remember more about the end of a conversation than the beginning, experts say that high-class people make the most out of their goodbyes, and they're intentional with their words.

“[‘So good to see you’ signals] friendliness and approachability without entanglement,” Dr. Noëlle Santorelli, PhD, previously shared, calling it out as the phrase high-class people use at the end of an interaction.

Dr. Shaw offered another phrase classy people use when they have to head out: “It was nice catching up with you today."

2 Things "High-Class" People Don't Do During Goodbyes

Being intentional with word choice is only one part of the puzzle when it comes to a classy goodbye. There are also some things high-class people avoid doing at the end of an conversation. Here are two examples:

1. Make it all about them

As etiquette expert Jamila Musayevapreviously told Parade, “From speaking too loudly to dominating every conversation, trying too hard to be noticed often has the opposite effect that a classy woman wants to give off."

That's why an especially classy individual doesn't seek attention in the interaction, including at the end.

"Instead, she listens attentively and contributes meaningfully, letting her presence speak for itself,” Musayeva explained.

2. Avoid eye contact

Nonverbal cues are just as important as the comments we make out loud. As etiquette expert Jenny Dreizenpreviously told Parade, classy interactions involve respectful eye contact.

“Maintaining soft but steady eye contact lets people know you are actively engaged,” she said. “They will feel seen and heard and not like you are more interested in that conversation over there.”

This is especially important around the time an event is wrapping up, when distractions abound.

Aldi's viral Kirkwood Spicy Chicken Patties are back on shelves as of July 29, and shoppers wasted no time reacting.

The frozen patties, a fan-favorite "dupe" for a well-known fast-food spicy chicken sandwich, disappeared from stores earlier this year. Their return as a limited-time Aldi Find quickly lit up social media, with one Reddit user announcing they'd bought five bags in one trip.

Spice level was the biggest topic of conversation. One commenter warned the patties are "sneaky hot," while another said their spouse was caught off guard by just how much heat packed into each bite. Several shoppers admitted they don't consider themselves spice-sensitive but were still surprised.

Not everyone found the heat to be a dealbreaker. Multiple commenters shared their preferred method for taming the patties, from air-frying them with cheese and pickles to pairing them with something cool on the side. One shopper compared the payoff to Chick-fil-A's spicy sandwich, while another said they now hold up better than a well-known chain's spicy chicken option.

According to Rolling Stone, the Pumpkins have been full of surprises throughout Lollapalooza week. At an earlier aftershow, they welcomed Barry Williams (best known as Greg Brady on The Brady Bunch) to perform the sitcom classic "It's a Sunshine Day," while former touring bassist Melissa Auf der Maur also reunited with the band for "The Everlasting Gaze."

Together, the two guest appearances showcased just how influential the Smashing Pumpkins remain more than three decades after breaking through during alternative rock's golden era.

Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, after eight years of marriage.

The Connecticut Sun center filed the petition Thursday in Fulton County, Georgia, according to court documents. In the filing, Griner described the marriage as "irretrievably broken," stating there was no hope of reconciliation.

Court documents show the couple has been separated since July 24. Griner is asking for joint physical custody of their son, Bash, whom the couple welcomed in 2024. She's also seeking an equitable division of the couple's marital assets and debts.

An attorney for Brittney Griner addressed the filing in a brief statement, saying the matter is one the couple hopes to resolve privately and that there would be no further comment at this time. Representatives for Cherelle Griner have not yet responded to requests for comment.

The two met as students at Baylor University, where Brittney Griner became the program's No. 2 all-time scorer in NCAA Division I women's basketball history. They married in June 2018.

Cherelle Griner, an attorney, became a prominent advocate for her wife's release after Brittney Griner was detained in Russia in February 2022. Authorities said they found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage, and she was later convicted on drug charges and sentenced to nine years in a Russian penal colony.

Cherelle Griner spoke publicly and often during her wife's nearly 10-month detention, working to keep pressure on U.S. officials. Brittney Griner was ultimately released in December 2022 as part of a high-profile prisoner swap.

The couple's relationship remained in the public eye in the years since, including a joint appearance at the Sundance Film Festival premiere of a documentary about Brittney Griner's life earlier this year.

This marks Brittney Griner's second marriage. She was previously married to former WNBA player Glory Johnson in 2015.

On August 1, 1981, MTV announced its arrival with a rocket blastoff, an iconic electric guitar riff, and a promise of a television channel devoted entirely to music videos. The newly launched network introduced the world to clips by Pat Benatar, The Who, Phil Collins,Rod Stewart, and, of course, The Buggles' “Video  Killed the Radio Star.”

Within months, music videos became a must-have for artists, and a punky/new wave clip found a home on MTV's early playlist. The song was ”Working Girl” by The Members, and nearly 45 years later it remains an iconic part of MTV’s introduction of British new wave sounds to American viewers—even if it isn’t as well remembered as other music videos.

Written by Nicky Tesco and J.C. Carroll, “Working Girl” appeared on the band’s album Uprhythm Downbeat. The song featured an upbeat energy and a sing-along chorus as it told a tongue-in-cheek tale about a lazy guy mooching off of a hardworking woman. Its accompanying music video highlighted the song’s cheeky humor.

“Working Girl” was written about Tesco’s girlfriend Annie Day, per a post on The Members website, along with the explanation, “Being a musician it is very important to be in a relationship with someone who has a regular income.”

In a 2025 interview with Punk 77, Carroll looked back on writing “Working Girl” with Tesco, who died in 2022. “This song has Nicky’s character in it,” he said. “He wasn’t the world’s greatest singer, but he was a great raconteur and talker.”

Carroll also revealed that for the music video, the band hired professional models to play the 9-to-5 girlfriends of the scraggly Members bandmates. He told The Irish Times that while shooting the video, the models refused to speak to the band between takes.

“We were pop stars in America for a while,” Carroll also noted. “They thought we were an eighties college radio band, sort of like a U2 thing. So yeah, we had a career in America and Australia. But we didn’t realize that this was only going to last for about 18 months.”

Just as MTV was introducing The Members to American audiences, the band split following a U.S. tour in 1983. More than 40 years later, “Working Girl” remains The Members’ biggest U.S. success—and a forgotten MTV gem that helped shape the network’s diverse musical history.

Amazon revealed this week that it received a $600 million tariff refund, and says some of that money is headed back to customers.

Amazon's Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky shared the news during the company's second-quarter earnings call, explaining that Amazon "largely absorbed" the added costs itself rather than passing them on to shoppers. Still, the company acknowledged there are exceptions.

Olsavsky said Amazon identified a "limited set of circumstances" where it can trace specific import charges directly to what customers paid. In those cases, Amazon says it will reach out to affected shoppers directly and issue refunds automatically, with no action required on the customer's end.

For everyone else, Amazon says the money will go toward keeping prices low across the site rather than issuing individual refunds.

The company hasn't shared a timeline for when refunds will go out, nor has it specified which products or purchase windows might qualify. Olsavsky also didn't offer an estimate of how much affected customers could expect to receive.

Amazon's refund is smaller than some competitors', and Olsavsky offered an explanation for that. He said the company stocked up on inventory ahead of time, which limited how many products were directly affected. He also noted Amazon isn't the importer of record for most items sold through its site, since more than 60% of Amazon's marketplace sales come from third-party sellers who import their own goods.

Not every company facing similar refunds is taking the same approach. Nintendo recently pushed back on a request to share its own refund with shoppers, with the company's legal team arguing that customers who didn't like the price had the option to simply not buy the product.

For now, Amazon shoppers who believe they overpaid due to import costs will need to wait and see whether they're contacted, as the company says the process will be automatic rather than something customers can apply for.

In 1991, one upbeat song with the ability to instantly put a smile on your face took over the airwaves—and 35 years later, it remains a radio classic and a timeless anthem. Despite never hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, "I Love Your Smile" by Shanice became an international hit in several countries.

Released by the famed label Motown Records in October 1991 as the lead single from her second studio album, Inner Child, the singer was just 18 years old when it turned into a smash hit. The full album came out on Nov. 19, with what would become the artist's biggest career hit at the forefront of the project.

From the first "Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo," music lovers know exactly what's coming next. The hit tells the classic story of an innocent teenage crush. "Sitting in my class, just drifting away / Staring into the windows of the world, yeah / I can't hear the teacher / His books don't call me at all / I don't see the bad boys trying to catch some play," the lyrics express, per Genius.

In the U.S., the track climbed the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 2 and holding its place for three weeks. A Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart-topper, the instantly recognizable bop remained a No. 1 for 4 weeks in late 1991.

The song also saw huge global success. Across the pond, it peaked at No. 2 in Europe on the UK Singles Chart and became a Top 10 hit in 22 countries worldwide, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. “I Love Your Smile” was also nominated for a Grammy for “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.”

And it is still an instantly recognizable classic to this day. At the time of writing, "I Love Your Smile" had amassed over 112 million Spotify streams and 14 million views on YouTube. Most recently, it received renewed attention and fresh energy after being famously sampled by Chris Brown for his Indigo hit "Undecided" (2019).

Fans echoed its timelessness and generational transcendence in the official video's comments section. Scott Eastwood, the son of legendary actor and director Clint Eastwood, looks just like his father. And now, he's sounding off on an actor's bad behavior in Hollywood.

Clint, 96, rose to stardom in the '60s in spaghetti westerns, before taking on the Dirty Harry films in the '70s and '80s. He later earned acclaim as a director with films like Mystic River and American Sniper. Scott, 40, acted in several of his dad's films before taking on roles in Suicide Squad and The Fate of the Furious. One look at the star makes it clear that there's no doubt who his father is!

Eastwood Slammed a Major Actor

In a new appearance onJoe Rogan's Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Eastwood slammed an actor he “just worked with” who dropped out of a movie during pre-production, PEOPLE shared.

“Without saying any names … you know, people get too famous for too long. They think the world owes them something,” Scott shared. “And when it comes to doing the right thing, you’re like, ‘Dude … Do the right thing, don’t be a piece of s---.’ They’re like, ‘F--- that. I can do whatever.’ ”

Eastwood continued, adding that "We started working on a film with a director and they decided, after we spent a bunch of money, that they just didn’t feel like they wanted to work with this other person and didn’t want to do the job."

The actor chose to simply take off and leave the production, even though their role was vital.

“I was like, ‘You need to pay that money back to that person who invested in you.’ And they [said], ‘I’m not going to do that,’ ” Eastwood continued.

Eastwood Reflected on Hollywood Bad Behavior

Eastwood also opened up about some of the crazy things he's seen throughout the years in Hollywood. He noted that because he grew up in the scene, he recognizes how ridiculous it is.

“I’ve seen some behavior in this business that is shocking,” he shared. “That would not go in other industries, but for some reason because we idolize [actors] … you’re like, ‘What dude?’”

“People think they want to be famous — you don’t want to be famous,” he added. “Rich, sure. But to be famous, that goal is so twisted … the whole other side of that is really ugly.”

Linda Blair, best known as the star of horror masterpieceThe Exorcist, has spent nearly 30 years running an animal rescue foundation. On Friday, July 31, Los Angeles County authorities searched her Southern California property as part of an investigation into a reported kennel operation housing more than 100 dogs. Blair was present and described as "extremely cooperative." No dogs were removed. She posted an informative video to Instagram that same day: "I just wanted to check in because today we got a really big surprise visit. As it turns out, there is nothing but some paperwork and some new diagrams and things."

The search was a joint operation between the LA County Department of Animal Care and Control and the Department of Regional Planning. The kennel's permits had expired in 2023, and multiple attempts by both agencies to contact the owner went unanswered. No dogs were removed. The investigation is still ongoing.

Most people know Linda Blair as the teenager who made The Exorcistterrifying in 1973. She won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and even received an Academy Award nomination for the same role. But her real life's purpose began long after the credits rolled. Thirty years separated the role that made her famous and the foundation she built to define the rest of her life.

She's been involved in animal welfare since 1984. She began actively rescuing animals herself in 1997. By 2003, she founded the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation as a nonprofit. Her foundation works with local shelters, and they find dogs in danger of being euthanized and give them a second chance at a permanent home. Blair was one of the main animal rescuers deployed during Hurricane Katrina. She's stood on the steps of the California State House to fight breed ban legislation. She even told People that helping animals is her "life's calling."

Now here's what she said on Friday after the authorities left.

"I'm fine. The animals are fine, and we just have some paperwork that has to be dealt with, and that's all this was all about," Blair said in her Instagram video. "I don't know why mail isn't used more often to notify somebody. Just saying." She added that she's been trying to move for two years for her health and to help more animals and described the rescue situation as "a big crisis we're dealing with in California and across the country." Her followers responded: "Love you, Linda. We'll forever be grateful for saving our Wendy." "Never stop fighting for these dogs. Your work is amazing."

She's Been Fighting for Animals Since Before Most People Knew Her Name

The DACC said it "appreciates the public's concern" and confirmed it's committed to ensuring all kennel operations meet legal requirements and provide humane care. Since the investigation is still ongoing, specific questions about the case couldn't be answered. Blair's foundation currently has dogs available for adoption through its website and Petfinder page.

Blair's perspective of Friday's episode was characteristically forward-looking. A paperwork issue and a planned move she's been working toward for two years for her health- it's all for the animals. A sign-off of "we're all fighting to save lives."

That's been true since 1997.

She fought breed ban legislation at the California State House. On Friday, authorities showed up to her property in 105-degree heat. Tilton Reflected on Making Dallas

Last year, Tilton told Women’s World that she was entirely clueless when she was first cast in the iconic series.

“I was fortunate that after I got Dallas, the people I was surrounded by, such as Oscar nominee Barbara Bel-Geddes [who played Miss Ellie Ewing], Jim Davis [Jock Ewing], and Larry Hagman [J.R. Ewing] had a stellar work ethic, and I just watched them. I learned things such as you always arrive 15 minutes early,” Tilton explained.

“What’s your secret?” It’s a question that people in long-term relationships are often asked (it’s especially common in interviews with celebrities in long marriages, because Hollywood long-term relationships are, apparently, especially impressive). But is there really a secret to being a happy couple over 50? What are people who have been able to stay together for decades doing right? 

To find out, Parade spoke to three psychologists who focus on relationships in their work: Dr. Crystal Saidi, PsyD, a psychologist with Thriveworks in Irvine, CA; Dr. Beverley Fehr, PhD, an author and professor at the University of Winnipeg; and Dr. Holly Schiff, PsyD, a psychologist with South Country Psychiatry in Connecticut.

The psychologists we spoke with had some themes in common when it comes to what happy couples over age 50 are doing. Plus, the experts all agree on one habit that couples who stay together long-term practice—and it’s a behavior that can be beneficial to anyone’s life, whether in a relationship or not, especially as we get older.

3 Secrets to a Happy Marriage After 50, According to 3 Psychologists

Experts reveal some of the foundational characteristics of a healthy, happy partnership after 50.

1. Communication

Communication is often touted as the most important thing in a healthy relationship, along with trust and mutual respect. And all three psychologists touched on communication—particularly, “constructive approaches to conflict,” as Dr. Fehr puts it. As the experts emphasize, good communication isn’t about not having conflicts; it’s about how these conflicts are handled.

“I believe choosing connection over being right is important,” says Dr. Saidi. “Happy couples are not necessarily the ones who argue less, but the ones who know how to repair more effectively after conflicts.” 

2. Acceptance 

Dr. Saidi and Dr. Schiff both mention acceptance as being key, too, because people change over the years. 

“Strong marriages allow room for each partner to keep growing and to make the effort to keep getting to know each other instead of assuming they already do,” says Dr. Saidi. 

Dr. Schiff explains, “Long-lasting marriages aren't built on trying to change your partner into someone they're not. They're built on understanding each other's strengths, accepting imperfections and continuing to choose one another over time.”

Dr. Fehr notes that it is “really important that each partner knows the other will ‘be there’ for them, no matter what.”

3. Adapting

Dr. Schiff says that for her, “The secret to a happy marriage for couples over 50 is the ability to adapt together… The couples who thrive aren't necessarily the ones who avoid hardship; I think they're the ones who learn how to face life's changes as teammates instead of opponents.”

The #1 Habit of Couples Who Stay Together Long-Term

The three experts overlap on a crucial trait that couples who stay together tend to have. And it’s something that is beneficial to living a happy life overall: curiosity. 

“I think one of the biggest things I see is that they continue investing in the relationship, even after the ‘honeymoon phase’ has long passed,” Dr. Schiff says. “They don't stop being curious about each other simply because they've been together for years.”

One way to keep the curiosity going is for partners to simply continue to ask about each other and get to know each other as they grow. It also helps to keep doing new things together.

“Relationships also are at risk for boredom. Over time, it can feel as though you know everything about your partner,” Dr. Fehr shares. “Research shows that couples who are happy over the long haul put effort into doing new and exciting things together.” If you don't know what to do, we go more in-depth on reconnecting with a spouse after 50 below, so keep reading.

In addition to curiosity, Dr. Saidi and Dr. Schiff also both mention “assuming positive intent” as another key habit in long-term marriages.

“Instead of immediately interpreting a partner's behavior in the worst possible light, they give each other the benefit of the doubt and approach disagreements with curiosity rather than criticism,” Dr. Schiff explains.

What Psychology Says About Marriage Longevity and Happiness

In case it isn’t clear enough yet: long-term relationships and marriages aren’t about not having disagreements and arguments. They’re about how partners handle conflicts.

“Psychology consistently shows that healthy relationships aren't conflict-free; they're repair-rich,” Dr. Schiff explains. “Every couple disagrees. What matters most is how they recover afterward.” 

She adds that people should keep in mind “that satisfaction in marriage isn't something couples achieve once and then keep forever.” Instead, the relationship requires ongoing care.

“The couples who remain happy over the long term continue nurturing the relationship through everyday acts of kindness, appreciation and emotional responsiveness,” she states.

Another lesson that psychology can teach us about long-term relationships is the effect that they can have on an individual’s wellbeing. 

“We know from decades of research that people who are in happy marriages enjoy better physical, mental and emotional health—and even live longer—than people who are unmarried or in unhappy relationships,” Dr. Fehr notes. “So it is worth the effort to show appreciation and gratitude to your spouse and spend high-quality time with them.”

How To Reconnect with Your Spouse in Your 50s and Beyond

The experts agree: The best way to reconnect with a partner is to do something new together. 

“It will give you a fresh perspective on your partner at a time when you feel you may know everything about them, and it will re-ignite the ‘spark’ in your marriage or make it glow brighter,” Dr. Fehr states.

She suggests going to a play, having a picnic in the park or taking a dance class, while Dr. Saidi says doing the “something new,” which could be a cooking class, hiking, playing pickleball or having a weekend away.

And sometimes, it’s just about talking rather than actually doing an activity. Dr. Saidi says to make sure to chat “about the future versus only the past” and to communicate without distractions like cell phones. 

Both Dr. Schiff and Dr. Saidi point out that couples in middle age and beyond might be beginning new phases of their lives, such as their kids moving away or entering retirement. They suggest viewing new stages of life as opportunities to reconnect.

“I encourage couples to become intentional again,” says Dr. Schiff. “Ask each other questions you haven't asked in years… Schedule regular date nights, even if they're simple. Make time to laugh. Physical affection, shared hobbies and expressing gratitude all help rebuild emotional closeness.”

Don’t Pair This Common Supplement With Blood Thinners, Doctors Warn

If you take a vitamin K supplement and you're on prescription blood thinners, be very aware of what you are doing, and make sure your primary care physician and cardiologist are too, because it may impact how your medication works.

"Vitamin K mainly affects warfarin (Coumadin), because warfarin works by blocking vitamin K's role in blood clotting," Dr. Kevin S. Shah, MD, FACC, FHFSA, board-certified cardiologist, tells Parade. "Large or sudden changes in vitamin K intake can reduce warfarin's effectiveness or make it work too well. There is less interaction between vitamin K and newer blood thinners such as apixaban or rivaroxaban."

Board-certified cardiologist Dr. David Rhee, MD, agrees. "If you are taking aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), ticagrelor (Brilinta), or any other anti-platelet, vitamin K intake poses no risk. If you are taking apixaban (Eliquis), rivaroxaban (Xarelto), or any other direct oral anticoagulant, vitamin K intake also poses no risk," he says. "If you are taking warfarin (Coumadin), then vitamin K will affect how the medication works."

Pairing certain supplements with certain blood thinners can be dangerous, cardiologists warn.

If you don't take a specific vitamin K supplement, check your multivitamins, protein or health shakes, meal bars or lunchtime salads, because chances are you may be getting a hefty dose of the nutrient—a key component to making blood clot—without even realizing it. While that's great for most people, for those on blood thinners who want to prevent blood clots, it can be quite dangerous.

How To Get Your Daily Dose of Vitamin K Safely if You’re on Blood Thinners

First, find out if you actually have a vitamin K deficiency. (That may require some routine bloodwork to determine, so be sure to let your doctor know that you're concerned and want to check it out).

If you aren't vitamin K deficient, you likely don't need a supplement at all. If you are vitamin K deficient, luckily, you can consume it safely if you're on warfarin, Dr. Shah tells Parade. The difference? You should be getting vitamin K from your plate, not from a pill. Your ultimate goal should be to balance the level of your vitamin K intake to the prescribed dosage of your anticoagulant to ensure they can each do their jobs safely.

"For patients taking warfarin, the goal is to take a consistent amount of vitamin K-rich foods," he says. "Eating a consistent amount week to week is a better approach than having large changes in intake on a daily basis."

Dr. Rhee agrees, explaining, "I always tell my patients not to avoid vitamin K (it's most commonly in leafy greens like spinach, kale and broccoli—great for the heart!), but rather keep the daily amount consistent."

Keeping vitamin K present in your diet actually isn't that hard, either, especially if you take care to have a heart-healthy diet overall (think the Mediterranean and DASH diets). Aside from broccoli, kale and spinach, other vitamin K-rich foods include collard greens, turnip greens, soybeans, olive oil, canola oil, lettuce, pumpkin and pine nuts.

If you do need to increase your vitamin K intake, do it slowly with your meals. You can use pine nuts to whip up some pesto, add some pumpkin to a smoothie or bowl of oatmeal or swap olive or canola oil in a recipe that normally calls for other types (but be mindful of each oil's respective smoke points).

If you're really concerned and need to up your vitamin K intake at your doctor's recommendation, know that you likely have plenty of medication options besides warfarin. "I strongly recommend discussing with your provider if it is still the best choice for you," Dr. Rhee says.
