When the warm weather arrives, outdoor spaces get a promotion. Your patio isn’t just a place for plants anymore — it’s your morning coffee spot, your afternoon scrolling zone, your weekend hangout hub, and, if you accessorize it right, your escape from life. The only problem? Not all outdoor seating is built for the kind of lounging you think you’re about to do. What you actually need is something designed for stretching out and staying put.

That’s where the Costway Outdoor Patio Chaise Lounge Chair Set at Target comes in. Now down 64% to $146 from its original $410 price tag, it instantly changes the way you use your outdoor space. Instead of perching, you’re reclining. Instead of just stepping outside for a bit of fresh air, you may find yourself staying out there for hours.

Whether it becomes your go-to sunbathing spot, your weekend reading nook, or your official “do not disturb” zone, this set makes your backyard feel more resort-like. Each chaise features a wide backrest with five adjustable positions, letting you easily shift from upright lounging to lying completely flat, using a simple pole-and-lock system.

The full-length frame measures about 75.5 inches long and 26 inches wide, giving you plenty of room to stretch out, while the height can be adjusted between 24.5 and 40.5 inches depending on your preferred angle. The design is finished with ergonomic, curved armrests designed to support your arms while you relax.

Each chaise is constructed with breathable, easy-to-clean, quick-drying fabric paired with a heavy-duty powder-coated steel frame built to hold up over time. Reinforced support bars allow a single chair to handle up to 350 pounds, while thick legs and anti-skid pads help keep everything stable on different surfaces.

Shoppers say the lightweight design makes these lounge chairs “easy to move around” from poolside to patio or even indoors if needed. The set also comes with straightforward assembly instructions and all necessary hardware, so you can get set up quickly and use them right away.

George Harrison Once Stayed at This Illinois Home—Now It Can Be Yours

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 9:48pm

Before the Beatles were selling out stadiums, guitarist George Harrison visited his sister in Benton, Illinois, in September 1963. He stayed with her in her 5-bedroom bungalow. It’s now listed for sale for $105,000.

Beatles fans are afraid this special home at 113 McCann Street will be torn down by new owners.

Grady Adams, the property’s current owner, was renting it out as apartments, but he has decided to sell. “Of course, if it doesn’t get demo’d, I would prefer that,” Adams told The Associated Press (AP)

But this isn’t the first time the house has been in jeopardy.

In 1995, a state agency purchased the house with plans to use the land for parking.

Beatles fan, author and documentarian, Robert Bartel, brought attention to the demolition. With the help of other enthusiasts, including Harrison’s sister, Louise Harrison Caldwell, they saved the home.

Local investors acquired the land and opened the well-named Hard Day’s Nite Bed and Breakfast. It featured Beatles collectibles, including the couch that Harrison used when he played his guitar. The bed-and-breakfast eventually closed in 2010.

For now, the future of the home is uncertain.

According to the AP, Brian Calcaterra, Benton’s director of economic development, proposed that the city draft an ordinance to prevent new owners from demolishing the home. Mayor Lee Messersmith said the city council has not reviewed the subject.

While the property has been saved once, Benton business owner and historian, Robert Rea, isn’t sure the results will be the same this time around.

“When we did this (in 1995), the world went crazy because they thought, ‘George is going to come, he’s going to save the house,’” Rea told the AP. “And I’m just being honest with you, maybe I’m missing it or something, but that momentum is not here.”

While in Benton back in 1963, George Harrison bought the same guitar as bandmate John Lennon, a Rickenbacker 425. He used it to record “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” This guitar sold at auction for $675,000 in 2014.

Just a few months after Harrison’s trip to Southern Illinois, he performed with the rest of the Fab Four on “The Ed Sullivan Show” to a whopping 73 million viewers. This was the Beatles’ U.S. debut and the beginning of Beatlemania.

Harrison, who died in 2001, never did return to Benton, but his time there was one of his last moments of anonymity.

1995 Hit Film Ranked the 'Greatest Heist Thriller' of All Time

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 9:34pm

While not every heist movie is a hit, there are plenty of thrilling films from the genre that are beloved and timeless. Collider recently shared a list of the "10 greatest heist thrillers of all time," which included hits like The Killing from 1956, 1992's Reservoir Dogs, The Usual Suspects from 1995, and 1975's Dog Day Afternoon.

Heat, released in 1995, secured the top spot on Collider's list, which was published on April 11. According to the publication, Heat should be recognized as the best heist thriller because it has interesting characters, incredible action-packed scenes, and a well-written script.

Michael Mann, who wrote and directed the film, discussed making Heat following a showing of the 1995 movie at TIFF in 2015. He said that he always wanted Al Pacinoto play Vincent Hanna, Jon Voight for the role of Nate, and Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley.

In addition, Mann said that the cast and crew did their research regarding Los Angeles crime before the film's production. He said that he spent time with a Los Angeles Police Department commander for about nine months to understand what a LAPD Robbery Homicide Detective, like Vincent, would go through.

"Every Friday and Saturday night, I'd go hang out with him and we would just answer radio calls about 9:00 p.m. to like 2:00 in the morning on Friday or Saturday night, just rolling through the city on whatever was happening," shared Mann while speaking before an audience.

According to Mann, Ashley Judd, who played Charlene Shiherlis, also had conversations with former sex workers before filming Heat.

"Ashley Judd talking to middle-aged real estate women who are very respectable, who 15 years earlier had been turning tricks," said the filmmaker. "On Ventura Boulevard because they had three kids and their husbands were in prison."

In addition, the actors who played members of Neil's crew "actually cased a bank" to make the situation more real.

A Look Back at Kate Middleton's Anzac Day Outfits Ahead of Her Return to the Event After 4 Years

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 9:27pm

Kate Middleton will be resuming her royal duties after Spring Break by attending Anzac Day services on April 25, marking her return to the event after four years.

Anzac Day commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars. April 25 specifically marks the anniversary of Australian and New Zealand soldiers landing in Gallipoli, Turkey, in 1915. The day includes a dawn service beginning at 5 a.m. at the New Zealand War Memorial in Hyde Park Corner, followed by a formal wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph on Whitehall. The events conclude with a service at Westminster Abbey, featuring a separate wreath-laying ceremony at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior.

This year, Kate, 44, is taking a central role alongside Princess Anne. The Princess of Wales will lay a wreath on behalf of King Charles III, who will be prepping for his upcoming state visit to the US, and she is expected to attend the service at Westminster Abbey. Prince William will also reportedly be in attendance.

Kate has only attended Anzac Day in London on two other occasions, with her prior appearances in 2019 and 2022.

In 2019, she stepped out for the events with her brother-in-law, Prince Harry. At the time, Prince William was in New Zealand following the Christchurch mosque attacks, and Meghan Markle was on maternity leave after giving birth to her and Harry’s son, Prince Archie

Kate stood out in a custom bright teal-blue coat dress by Catherine Walker & Co. She paired the structured coat with a matching teal fascinator by Rosie Olivia, adorned with curled pheasant feathers. She kept the peacock color theme with Emmy London green suede pumps and a matching Natasha clutch. Harry, for his part, looked dapper in a navy suit adorned with his military service medals and a red and navy striped tie.

Kate and Harry were all smiles arriving at the event together, a reminder that the pair were previously very close. Harry even called Kate the “sister I’ve never had and always wanted,” in his 2023 memoir, Spare. However, William and Kate and Harry and Meghan have since had a falling out stemming from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepping away from the royal family in 2020 and relocating to California.

Anzac Day in 2019 was one of the last events Kate and Harry attended together as fellow senior royals.

In 2022, Kate made her second appearance at Anzac Day alongside Prince William. While her look echoed her 2019 ensemble, she looked royally elegant in an ivory coat dress by Alexander McQueen and black pumps. The dress is one of her favorites, as she previously wore it during Princess Charlotte’s christening in July 2015 and Trooping the Colour in June 2016.

She opted for a stylish Jane Taylor London Calypso halo headpiece with a black tuxedo bow, which sat on her loose curls beautifully. Her accessories were extra special, as she wore Collingwood pearl drop earrings that belonged to Princess Diana.

One staple accessory of Anzac Day is a red poppy pin. Men and women wear the special symbol of remembrance to honor the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand soldiers who died in war, as the color represents the bloodshed during war.

Widely Banned Classic Named Most-Read on Goodreads This Week

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 9:06pm

A dark dystopian novel often taught in schools officially topped the list of most-read classics this week on the popular reading community site Goodreads. 1984 by George Orwell has been on people's minds lately, with many giving the novel a read in the last week.

The well-known classic novel, which was released in 1949, follows a man named Winston Smith who lives and works in the totalitarian superstate called Oceania that is led by the looming and dictatorial figure known as Big Brother. His followers are The Party, which uses organizations like the Thought Police, the Ministry of Truth, the Ministry of Love, and more to control everyone.

Through made-up terms, the doctoring of history reports, constant surveillance, and more, The Party attempts to dictate what all citizens think and believe so that they are obedient to Big Brother. While Winston appears to be a loyal follower of the state, he starts to have thoughts of rebellion, encountering like-minded people as the ideas spread.

Related: Best-Selling Classic Novel Was Ranked "Darkest Book of All Time" on Goodreads

1984 has been banned many times all over the world for its critical take on totalitarianism and intense nationalism, as well as its critique of censorship and surveillance of citizens, among other things.

Orwell's book was banned in the Soviet Union until 1988, and it was recently banned in Belarus in 2022. 1984 has also been on plenty of banned book lists in various schools throughout the U.S. and beyond.

As for why 1984 is the most-read classic this week, it's possible that current events around the world have people thinking about the book more lately, or 1984 simply continues to be a resilient and topical classic that readers return to again and again over the decades.

Another Orwell book, Animal Farm, was also one of the most-read classics this week, along with The Great Gatsby, The Hobbit, Pride and Prejudice, and more.

41 Years Later, Jed Allan’s Sudden ‘Days of Our Lives’ Exit Still Stings—And His Reason for Leaving Was Heartbreaking

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 9:01pm

On April 17, 1985, Days of Our Lives aired a memorable episode that marked the exit of fan-favorite character Don Craig, as portrayed by Jed Allan. In the episode, Don leaves Salem to mail a letter, and never returns, brining an end to Allan’s run on the series, which began in 1971.

During his time on the soap, Don was involved in several high-profile storylines. His marriage to Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) was especially popular with viewers, particularly the emotional fallout following the death of their infant son, D.J. (Don Jr.), a storyline still referenced by the show and fans today.

Allan later reflected on his departure in his 2004 memoir, Please, Spell the Name Right, offering insight into the circumstances behind his exit.

“By the early 80s, the writing was on the wall for myself and a few of the other so-called ‘aging’ regulars on Days.” Allan wrote.

He went on to say the shift was due in part to what he described as “ageism that was rampant at the time,” as the show began focusing more on “youth, beauty, and certain ‘physical assets.’”

At the time, the show was introducing a wave of younger characters including Bo Brady (Peter Reckell), Hope Brady (Kristian Alfonso), Shane Donovan (Charles Shaughnessy), Kim Brady (Patsy Pease), Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols) and Kayla Brady (Mary Beth Evans) among others.

Allan said his role had been gradually reduced, with fewer scenes and less dialogue. When his contract came up for renewal, he claimed his episode guarantee was cut significantly. “Many older cast members’ guarantees had been slashed in half,” he wrote.

As a result, Allan chose to leave the show, submitting his notice and departing about a month later. “They didn’t believe it,” he recalled, citing a lack of planning for his exit.

Reflecting on his final episode, Allan recalled the now-infamous scene: “I’ll never forget my last scene… I said, ‘I’m going to mail a letter,’ then I walked out the door, never to return again.”

The scene featured Anita Jodelsohn, as Sonia Romanov, a Russian spy. Coincidentally, April 17, 1985 also marked her final appearance, as the character was killed by the villain known as ‘The Dragon.’

For his work on Days of Our Lives, Allan received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actor in A Drama series in 1979.

After leaving Days of Our Lives, Allan went on to star as C.C. Capwell on Santa Barbara from 1986 until its 1993 finale. He later appeared on Beverly Hills, 90210 as Rush Sanders, and in 2002 joined Port Charles as Ed Grant before briefly crossing over to Genral Hospital as Edward Quartermaine in 2004. His final credit was on the web series The Bay from 2011 to 2012.

Allan died on March 9, 2019 at the age of 84.

Best-Selling Author’s Classic Hit Ranked Among ‘Best Books’ of All Time

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 8:55pm

It's not every day that a novel connects with readers quite like The Fault In Our Stars.

The bestselling book by John Green has been ranked among the "best books ever" on Goodreads, based on votes from readers. The recognition reflects the novel's touching emotional impact and its continued popularity more than a decade after its release.

Published in 2012, the story follows Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teenager living with cancer, who meets Augustus Waters at a support group. Their relationship unfolds into a deeply moving love story that explores life, loss and the search for meaning in the face of uncertainty. Known for its honest dialogue and poignant storytelling, the novel struck a chord with readers around the world. Perhaps much of its success can be attributed to its deeply personal origins.

"It's based on the short life of my friend, who died in 2010 at 16," Green told Your Teen in 2014. "It was important for me to write a novel where people were living with serious illness, but that wasn’t the only thing they were doing. We imagine that people with a terminal illness live a fundamentally different life than our own. But, they don’t. Their lives are just as complex and meaningful. They have as much life and joy, and anger and frustration—everything we experience."

The book quickly became a global phenomenon, praised for its ability to balance humor and heartbreak while tackling difficult subject matter. Its relatable characters and emotional depth helped solidify Green's place as one of the most influential voices in young adult fiction.

"I like writing about adolescents because so much stuff is happening for the first time," Green said. "They are grappling with the big questions about being a person—an entity separate from their parents—for the first time. They're asking questions about the meaning of life, they’re falling in love—all without any irony or fear."

The story was later adapted into the film of the same name, starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. The adaptation was a commercial success and introduced the story to an even wider audience, bringing its emotional narrative to life on screen.

More than a decade later, The Fault in Our Stars continues to resonate with readers of all ages. For Green, it's vital to hang onto to the wonder of adolescence, even as readers age.

"When you're lying down with your friends under a big sky at night and you’re looking at the stars and you're conscious of how large the universe is, that's a borderline sacred experience," he told The New York Times in 2025. "If you lose that in adulthood, you've lost something really important."

With its inclusion in Goodreads' ranking, the novel stands as a testament to the enduring power of a story that captures both the fragility and beauty of life and the kind of love that leaves a lasting impact.

Ayesha and Stephen Curry Talk Parenting With Michelle Obama, ‘It’s a Challenge for Sure’

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 8:02pm

Stephen Curry isn’t just one of the leading NBA players. Sure, he’s a Golden State Warriors superstar. But he’s also a doting dad to four kiddos (with wife TV personality and cookbook author Ayesha Curry).

The power couple recently sat down with former FLOTUS Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson for the duo’s IMO podcast, opening up about the early years of raising children and parenting in the spotlight.

Of course, the Currys aren’t the only famous parents on this podcast. Obama (Michelle, that is) had plenty to say about parenting in the public eye, revealing, “Malia and Sasha never wanted Barack to come to their stuff with the presidential motorcade…I mean, they’re just like, dad, just don’t come.”

Obama continued, “The girls didn’t want friends to come to the White House because they felt like it’s not a normal house…I guarantee you, your friends want to come.”  The former First Lady also shared, “It isn’t normal from where they came from in Chicago, but it is their normal…Our kids reacted the way we reacted.”

So, how do Stephen and Ayesha Curry handle parenting as famous parents? The NBA star said, “It’s a challenge for sure. You know, worried about like sleepover nights or extracurriculars, especially with Riley, she wasn't to be a little bit more independent…like meeting new parents and not making it a big deal but making sure there are boundaries around how we move so that we feel safe.”

Along with 13-year-old Riley, Curry and his wife are parents to Ryan Carson Curry (born in 2015), Canon W. Jack Curry (born in 2018), and Caius Chai Curry (born in 2024). He also talked about some pretty real parenting antics, “We’re going to be at your game. We’re going to be loud, yelling, going crazy. Uh, we’re going to be embarrassing.”

The podcast focused on more than just celeb parenting. Obama also asked about the early years and how the couple dealt with those oh-so-common sleepless nights, admitting, “Barack was really hands-on. I mean, the one reason I always say I slept in the early years because we would divide up the time. I would go to bed at eight or nine, do that last feeding, and then pump. And I would just go to sleep, cover my ears, and just let him have the night. Up until the last feeding.” Looks like the former President was a pretty amazing dad!

Curry (this time, Ayesha) got candid about the challenges she faced, “So with our first three, people would advocate for me and be like get some help, get some help. I had this strange sense of pride, and this need to prove that I could be super mom…and I was exhausted.” She went on to add, “ I paid for it mentally and physically. So then with Kai Kai, with our fourth, I said you know what? We are so fortunate to have the resources to have a little bit of help. So, I actually got this time around, I got a night nurse to get those six hours.”

1976 'Haunting' Soft Rock Hit Was Initially Written With Just 2 Notes

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 7:57pm

While the classic Eagles tune "Witchy Woman" wasn't actually written about Stevie Nicks, as many fans have assumed over the years, that doesn't mean Nicks won't always be the most wonderfully witchy woman in all of rock and roll (just check her out on American Horror Story if you need proof). So it makes sense that her signature song, "Rhiannon," was inspired by an "old Welsh witch" — but how did the tune come about?

As Nicks' Fleetwood Mac bandmate and former love interest Lindsey Buckingham revealed in a new TikTok video, the song started with just two notes.

"It's interesting, when Stevie wrote this, she wrote it on the piano, and it was just two notes, it was kind of like a music box," Buckingham explained.

"And obviously, I wanted to make it into something with a little more lilt and rhythm, so I came up with this...this is basically just two chords, an A minor to an F, and it goes something like this," he continued before demonstrating the song's intro on a guitar.

Recorded for Fleetwood Mac's eponymous debut album and released in 1976 as a single, "Rhiannon" went on to become a highlight of the band's live performances and a fan-favorite for generations. Upon its release, Billboard praised the "haunting song" for its "infectious melody."

Lyrically, Nicks took inspiration from a "stupid little paperback that I found somewhere at somebody's house, lying on the couch," she told Classic Rock in 2023.

“It was called Triad [written by Mary Leader] and it was all about this girl who becomes possessed by a spirit named Rhiannon," she continued. "I read the book, but I was so taken with that name that I thought: ‘I’ve got to write something about this.’ So I sat down at the piano and started this song about a woman that was all involved with these birds and magic."

Nicks went on to say that she still has the cassette tape from when she was first writing "Rhiannon."

“Lindsey came in and I said: ‘We have to go to a park and record the sound of birds rising.’ And he looked at me like I was crazy. And I said: ‘Don’t you think Rhiannon is a beautiful name?’ And he said: ‘Yeah, it is a beautiful name,'" she recalled, adding, “I come to find out, after I’ve written the song, that in fact Rhiannon was the goddess of steeds, maker of birds. Her three birds sang music, and when something was happening in war you would see Rhiannon come riding in on a horse."

All these years later, Fleetwood Mac fans are still listening to the band's most ethereal hit: At the time of this writing, "Rhiannon" has been streamed 632,438,518 times on Spotify alone.

Nancy Guthrie Update: Sheriff Chris Nanos Speaks Out on 'Bombshell' Report of Another Person Being Detained

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 7:51pm

Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing 10 weeks after she was abducted from Tucson, Ariz.—and Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos just responded to a "bombshell" report of another person being detained for questioning.

During a Friday, April 17 interview on Crime Stories With Nancy Grace, host Nancy Grace spoke with investigative reporter Dave Mack.

Grace kicked off the interview with a report that a "person south of Tucson had been detained for questioning." She then asked Mack, "Isn't that the same general area where someone was detained before, several weeks ago, nearly at the get-go? And everyone was so happy that maybe the case had been resolved, and then it turned out the person was released."

To that, Mack replied, "Nancy, that is exactly what happened. And it appears that we are right back in that same general area as we had been before. And now, we're being led to the trough: a possible new suspect, possible new information. But Pima County not jumping in. Nobody providing us with a lot of information."

Additionally, Grace speculated that news of a person potentially having been detained in Nancy's case was related to Savannah leaving mid-show on Today on April 15. The NBC morning show anchor was also absent on April 17.

However, none of this was the case, according to Fox News Digital reporter Michael Ruiz. He spoke with Nanos, who offered a blunt response to reports of a new person having been detained.

On April 17, Ruiz took to X, writing, "🚨🔎🚨Sheriff Nanos’ one-word reply when asked about new reports that another person of interest has been detained in the Nancy Guthrie case: 'Nope.'"

Nancy was last seen at her Catalina Foothills residence on the evening of Jan. 31, with her family reporting her missing on Feb. 1. Despite Savannah offering a $1 million reward for information leading to the recovery of her mother, no suspect has been named in the case.

1975 Hit Ranked Among Best ‘Soft Rock Songs’ of All Time Became a Timeless Classic

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 7:46pm

The 1970s marked the pinnacle years of soft rock, a melodic, radio-friendly sound in contrast to the aggressive, high-energy beat of hard rock.

While top artists like Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Air Supply, Bread and others dominated the airwaves, Gary Wright captured listeners' hearts with his distinctive approach to soft rock.

The mid-70s marked a breakthrough period for the singer-songwriter after releasing his third studio album, The Dream Weaver.

In 1975, he released a now-timeless classic, “Dream Weaver,” later ranked among the “best soft rock songs of all time” as cited by Ultimate Classic Rock, landing at No. 22 on the list.

As mentioned by the outlet, the New Jersey native was inspired by two songs from The Beatles. The first was John Lennon’s lyrics in the 1970 song "God,” while the other was George Harrison’s spiritual influence through the book Autobiography of a Yogi, after it was given as a gift by one of Wright’s close friends.

By the time “Dream Weaver” was released, it had gained strong public reception, cementing its status as one of the standout hits of the mid-70s.

The first single from his breakthrough album, the song peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976, while The Dream Weaver landed at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 in the same year.

According to Billboard, Dream Weaver was Wright’s “most beloved song and a frequent go-to Hollywood soundtrack cut.”

With its renewed popularity, the hit song was also featured in several films and TV series, including the 1992 movie Wayne's World, for which he recorded a new version instead of using the original recording.

It was also featured in Ice Age: Collision Course, Toy Story 3, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Glee* and Superstore.

After “Dream Weaver,” the singer-songwriter followed it up with another hit titled "Love Is Alive," which was also part of his studio album.

At the time, the synth-pop-focused track reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

After his decades-long career and timeless classics, Wright passed away in 2023 at the age of 80 due to complications from Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease after battling the illness for the past six years.

Sam’s Club Shoppers Love This 10-Piece Kitchen Set So Much They’re Calling It a ‘Game Changer’

Why don't all mixing bowls come with lids? It feels like such an obvious upgrade, and yet somehow it's still not the standard. If I'm whipping up pancake batter the night before (purely in the name of not waking up earlier than necessary), I'd really prefer not to slide a wide-open bowl into the fridge and hope for the best. And sure, I could reach for plastic wrap or aluminum foil, but that always feels a little wasteful, and never quite as secure as an actual lid.

But it isn't just about prep. It's the after, too. The moment when dinner's over, and there are leftovers sitting right there in the serving bowl. Why am I transferring them into a separate container, creating even more dishes for my future self? A simple lid would solve all of this.

Whether you choose from the blue, gray or green, Sam's Club shoppers are loving this 10-piece mixing bowl set.

"These bowls are fantastic," wrote a customer in their review. "The size is different from other brands. They are very deep and the lids close great. We have used them just about every day! They are dishwasher safe and very durable. I love the unique size and shape of them. They can hold a lot and the way they stack inside each other is a game changer. Saves so much space!"

New Report Uncovers Red Flags for the Nation's 401(k)s and IRAs

Fri, 04/17/2026 - 6:46pm

Financial powerhouse Fidelity has released its 2026 State of Retirement Planning Report. According to its findings, there are major red flags about how Americans feel about their retirement preparedness, highlighting a growing generational divide over what the future holds.

Unfortunately, the report appears to be a bit of a red flag about how financially stable many people feel and the economy, potentially hinting at growing uneasiness about money.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

No Generation is 100 Percent Confident About Retirement Prospects

The first thing to note about Fidelity's new report is how different generations feel about their retirement prospects. For example, 23 percent of Gen Z says they are confident they will be able to retire when and how they want. Meanwhile, 20 percent of Millennials and 36 percent of Gen X feel the same way. Oddly enough, 29 percent of Boomers say they aren't confident in their retirement prospects, despite the fact that the vast majority are already near or past retirement age.

Fidelity notes that it seems younger generations have greater confidence in their prospects than those closer to retirement age, raising questions about whether the younger generation is truly better prepared, or whether inflation is causing more retirees to worry about how their golden years will look. That may also be an indication that the nation's 401(k)s and IRAs aren't as robust as they once were, especially amid increased stock market volatility.

Related: The Best Strategies To Protect Your Social Security From the IRS

More People Are Worried About Rising Costs

Fidelity also examined how the different generations viewed the rising cost of living. Here, the age groups were almost entirely in lockstep, with each group saying that nearly half of their focus was on saving money to keep up with the cost of living.

That's right in line with the reason many people cited when it came to why they weren't confident in their ability to retire on their own terms, with 36 percent of Gen Z, 42 percent of Millennials, and 47 percent of Gen X saying they didn't think they'd be able to afford to retire.

Related: How Living In These States Could Shrink Your Social Security Check

More Americans are Expecting to 'Transition' Into Retirement

It used to be that you'd have your last day of work, everyone would gather around for some cake, and then you'd head home, never to return to work again. However, the Fidelity report states that 6 in 10 Americans plan to view their retirement more as a transition than a full stoppage. That includes the following breakdown:

  • 34 percent of those surveyed said they plan to reduce their hours instead of fully retiring
  • 30 percent say they plan to take on fewer work responsibilities
  • 18 percent plan to transition to a freelance or gig work type job
  • 32 percent say they will continue working as normal until they can retire

With so many working Americans deeply concerned about rising prices on everyday essentials, it's no surprise that fewer people view retirement as a "sure thing" anymore. While younger generations definitely feel more optimistic about the future, those getting closer to retirement age are likely starting to dip into their savings to cover rising costs and are more worried about what will happen once their earnings stop and prices continue to soar.
