When Jon Bon Jovi wrote “Runaway,” he was only 19 and did not even have a band or a record deal. More than four decades later, the song remains one of Bon Jovi’s most important early hits and a defining rock song of the 1980s.

“Runaway” first reached radio stations in 1983, before Bon Jovi had become the full band known around the world. Its early success helped change Jon Bon Jovi’s career, leading to the formation of the band and a record deal with Mercury Records.

The song later became the first single from Bon Jovi’s self-titled debut album, which arrived in January 1984. It reached No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the group its first U.S. Top 40 hit.

But “Runaway” had a much smaller beginning.

At the time, Jon Bon Jovi was still trying to find his way into the music business. He had written the song before Bon Jovi existed as a band and had trouble getting a record deal.

Looking back in a 2020 interview with Virgin Radio UK, Bon Jovi explained how difficult those early days were, per uDiscover Music.

“It’s 1982. I write ‘Runaway,’ but I can’t get a record deal. I can’t even get myself a band because, you know, original bands aren’t making any money at this time.”

That changed when a New York radio station gave the song an opportunity.

How ‘Runaway’ Became a Bon Jovi Breakthrough

“Runaway” was recorded at The Power Station in New York with a group of professional session musicians. The lineup included guitarist Tim Pierce, bassist Hugh McDonald, drummer Frankie LaRocka and keyboardist Roy Bittan, who was also part of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.

Jon Bon Jovi was already working at The Power Station, where his cousin Tony Bongiovi was involved in the studio business. He was close to the recording world, but he had not yet become the frontman of a major rock band.

Tim Pierce later remembered meeting Jon when the future rock star was just 19.

“Jon Bon Jovi was 19 at that time, I was 23, and Jon had the laser-focus about becoming a rock star at age 19. And I understand how he was able to do what he did, because he was completely laser-focused on being a rock star.”

According to Ultimate Guitar, Pierce said Jon already understood what he wanted from his career.

“He was already connected through his family. He was just a kid who very, very instinctively knew what he wanted to do and he knew how to negotiate the business because he was working at the studio and hanging out with Bruce Springsteen and all kinds of people at the Power Station [recording studio].”

The recording itself was not planned as the start of a major rock career. Pierce said he did not expect the track to become Bon Jovi’s first single.

“It was totally improvised. I had no idea that that song would go out into the world and be his first single.”

The guitarist also said the musicians worked together at The Power Station to build the recording. Pierce created the guitar solo during the session.

“We tracked the song, then we went upstairs into a smaller room and we overdubbed the guitars and the solo, and I made up the solo. You create with the advice and the collaboration of the others, and they weigh in on what you are going to do.”

The turning point came in 1983 when Bon Jovi brought “Runaway” to WAPP 103.5FM, a new radio station in New York.

The station's DJ Chip Hobart and promotion director John Lassman heard the song and liked it. Hobart played it repeatedly, giving the track the radio exposure it needed.

WAPP also held a contest with St. John’s University to find the best unsigned local band. “Runaway” won, and the song became a local radio hit.

“Runaway” began reaching listeners outside the New York area, while its success helped lead to the creation of the Bon Jovi lineup.

The band soon caught the attention of record executive Derek Shulman, who helped broker a deal with Mercury Records. The label chose “Runaway” as the first single from the band’s debut album.

The success of “Runaway” did not end with its original radio run. The song remained part of Bon Jovi’s live identity even after the band became internationally famous.

While much of the material from the band's first two albums became less common in later shows, “Runaway” continued to be performed regularly. Jon Bon Jovi also said in 2007 that he believed the song still held up.

Jon Bon Jovi has also spoken openly about the song’s early music video. In a 2024 conversation with Ultimate Classic Rock, he criticized the video and said the band had little control over its production at the time.

“I’m not a filmmaker,” Bon Jovi said. “Some of them we really got right, and others we didn’t. God knows things like ‘Runaway’ and some of those early ones were just dreck!”

Despite that early video, the song itself survived.

“Runaway” is therefore more than an early Bon Jovi single. It was the recording that helped move Jon Bon Jovi from an aspiring young songwriter into the beginning of a professional rock career.

Vern Gosdin earned a nickname that said plenty about the way his peers viewed him: "The Voice."

Born Aug. 5, 1934, Gosdin would have turned 92 today. Over a country music career that stretched from the late 1970s into the early 1990s, he scored 19 Top 10 hits on the country charts, including three songs that reached No. 1.

Gosdin's road to country music success was a long one. He first found his footing in the West Coast country scene, performing alongside his brother Rex as the Gosdin Brothers. The duo eventually moved toward Nashville, where Gosdin began building the solo career that would make him a familiar name to country listeners.

His biggest hits came later in his career, when his rich, emotional vocals became a defining part of his sound.

Gosdin reached No. 1 for the first time with "I Can Tell by the Way You Dance (You’re Gonna Love Me Tonight)," which topped the Billboard country chart in 1984. He followed it years later with "Set ’Em Up Joe," a 1988 tribute to Ernest Tubb that became one of his signature recordings.

His third No. 1 came with "I’m Still Crazy," which topped the country chart in 1989.

Gosdin’s music often leaned into heartbreak, lost love and the complicated emotions that come with both. That made his voice particularly well suited to the traditional country sound that remained popular even as Nashville’s musical landscape began changing.

SPOILER ALERT! The following contains full details of the Season 4 premiere of Ted Lasso, "Home," now available on Apple TV. Please don't read further if you don't intend to know everything that has happened so far.

Ted Lasso is heading back to England...next week!

After a lengthy three-year hiatus, the Emmy-winning sports comedy finally set foot back on the proverbial pitch. And, while fans were treated to a healthy dose of the familiar, including the return of fan-favorites Ted (Jason Sudeikis), Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) and Keeley (Juno Temple), the Season 4 premiere also veered into the unconventional. For one, we stayed stateside, as the episode was entirely set in Kansas, with Ted having transitioned from being the heralded coach of AFC Richmond to a part-time grocery store manager/full-time dad. But it wasn't long before the call came from across the pond, as Ted and his family would be moving back to the U.K. for him to coach the fledgling women's team. After all, as much as he may deny it, football is life.

Assumingly, next week will throw Ted — and us — right back into the fray, as he attempts to coach another team from the brink of obscurity to mainstream success. But after watching the premiere, we certainly had some questions about how the rest of Season 4 may look. And, if they're not answered in the next nine weeks, we'll have to give this show's return a red card.

How long can the Richmond women's team last? Tanya Reynolds as Alice and Jason Sudeikis as Ted in 'Ted Lasso'

Listening to Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins (Jeremy Swift) pitch Ted on coaching the AFC Richmond women's team, you'd be remiss not to feel a sense of deja vu. Granted, he was first brought overseas initially as an attempt for Rebecca to sink her newly-acquired team, while this gesture seems to be much more sincere. But the concept sounds remarkably familiar, as we are yet again watching Ted head across the pond to lead a ragtag group of footballers to a promising season.

It should be noted, however, that Season 1 was not actually a storybook ending for the men's team. Certainly, the team made some improvements from the doldrums it previously resided in, hitting some highs and lows over the course of the season. But, after losing to Manchester City, they are actually relegated out of the Premier League. Of course, the team's misery is only temporary, as over the course of two seasons, they not only make their way back into the league, but wind up one game away from winning the championship.

Given the inspirational tone Ted Lasso has taken on in its latter episode, it would be a shocker if Season 4 didn't end with some form of victory for the women's team. But the question remains: How realistically could a brand-new team do in its debut season? And, perhaps more importantly, even if its successful on the pitch, does that matter? Higgins provides the grim news to Rebecca while in the U.S. that a women's team has gone under due to lack of interest. As passionate as the Richmond fanbase has gotten over the years, getting them to care about the new group is a horse of a different color.

Is Rebecca's relationship made to last? And could Ted find love? Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca in 'Ted Lasso'

Fervent shippers of Ted and Rebecca had their hopes dashed in the Season 3 finale. After a very brief red herring, the speculation that the two would get together is promptly dead and buried. In fact, Rebecca capped the show's initial run by encounting Matthijs (Matteo van der Grijn), a Dutchman she had a chance dalliance with while in Amsterdam.

In the premiere, Rebecca says the two are going strong, having apparently been in a long-distance relationship for the past few years. Indeed, we find the two of them FaceTiming, and it seems like their chemistry is still palpable. But will Matthijs simply exist on a screen all season long? Could the show challenge a long-distance relationship by putting something — or someone — right in front of Rebecca's face? Season 4 will either need to do some heavy lifting building out the Rebecca-Matthijs dynamic, or a new partner could be afoot.

And not for nothing, could Season 4 see Ted finding love? With his marriage apart in Seson 1, he did entertain a brief thing with Rebecca's friend Sassy (Ellie Taylor). But, outside of that, the show really hasn't made an effort to give Ted a romantic interest. When we see him and Michelle (Andrea Anders) in the premiere, the two seem completely copacetic, with her even eager to move to England with Henry (Grant Feely) to co-parent their son. So, after spending years getting in a good space with his ex, this could be the time for Ted to finally find his match.

Even though he's allegedly, here, there and everyf—kingwhere, the Season 4 premiere had a surprising lack of Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein). The final moments of Season 3 had the grumpy ex-footballer become the new manager of AFC Richmond in Ted's absence, allowing him to fully embrace the team that made him who he was. Perhaps most surprising, however, is the person he had not embraced by season's end: Keeley.

The two were the perfect "will they/won't they" of Season 1. On paper, they're complete opposites, him a cursing curmudgeon and her an excitable fashionista. But, somehow, the two were just able to work. At least, for a little while. After formally becoming a couple throughout Season 2, we found out in the beginning of Season 3 that the two had split, crediting it to their increasingly busy schedules.

The finale did address the Roy/Keeley dynamic briefly, albeit by bringing in a long-forgotten third member of the love triangle in Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster). Believing that Keeley had gotten back together with her ex, Roy confronted his longtime rival, leading to a fight between the two and a plea with Keeley to choose between them. And, reminding us of the feminism that will drive her to make the Richmond women's team, she rebuffs them both, arguing she's not a thing to fight over.

Quite frankly, the ending to that storyline stunk. In an episode full of satisfactory resolutions for the characters, it felt like a disservice to both Roy and Keeley to end their up-and-down dynamic on such a dour note. Luckily, Sudeikis and company will get another bite of the apple in Season 4. And, with Jamie out of the picture for the season, it would be difficult not to imagine that we'll see a reconciliation between the two, albeit with many episodes of teasing the various missed connections between the two. And speaking of Jamie...

One of the final moments of the Season 4 premiere saw Ted ruminating over all of his Richmond keepsakes. And, in a particularly interesting close-up, we see a rather interesting news piece written by none other than Trent Crimm (assumingly in The Independent). In the glances we get, it seems that, in the years between seasons, Jamie has left England behind, apparently off to some Spanish-speaking country.

Right now, the identity of Tartt's new team is unknown (knowing popular teams in Spain, our money's on either Real Madrid or FC Barcelona). But it's clear, barring a drive-by appearance or two, we won't be seeing much of Dunster in Season 4. Which begs the question: How much will we see of any of the men players? We already saw in the Season 3 finale that Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) left Richmond to join the Nigerian national team. But what about the other footballers we got to know over the first few seasons, like Isaac (Kola Bokinni), Colin (Billy Harris), and Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández)? While the men and women both play on the same pitch, depending on how singular the focus of Season 4 is, there's a chance the Richmond players we know and love may not be back.

On that note, there are actually plenty of cast members who were not announced to be returning in Season 4 — at least not in a full-time capacity. Besides Jamie, the biggest omission from the main cast is definitely Nate (Nick Mohammad). Granted, the character had far from the best arc on the series, going from meek kitman to backstabbing rival assistant coach to regretful returning assistant coach. Still, Nate ends Season 3 on staff with Roy and Beard (Brendan Hunt), both of whom have been announced to be in the main cast this season. Did Nate choose to explore other passions, despite his clear talent for playcalling? God forbid, did he betray Richmond yet again and sign onto another rival team?

And what about some of the other team-adjacent characters from the first three seasons. Dr. Sharon Fieldstone was hired by Richmond full-time as their resident of mental health, and was even seeing Roy for regular sessions. But Sarah Niles is not listed as a part of the main cast. Considering how Season 4 will take place at the Richmond facility, wouldn't it make sense for Fieldstone to still be around? Has Trent Crimm (James Lance) truly left the team behind after penning a successful book about them? Or has Rebecca's decision to give 41% of the team's ownership to the fans renewed his interest? While not all of the main cast is back, hopefully we'll get at least a couple of peeks at these people who were so essential to the show's initial run.

And now, with news of a franchise reboot making waves this year, the groundbreaking 1999 horror sensation known as The Blair Witch Project will be released on the throwback format, thanks to Lionsgate, in addition to a newly remastered hi-def quality that fans and newcomers deserve.

The two-disc Blu-ray edition includes the filmmaker-approved revitalized original theatrical cut and festival cut restored from the original Hi8 videotapes and 16mm film elements, available in the U.S. for the first time, plus the original 35mm theatrical exhibition release.

Fans can thus relive the terror of three film students who disappeared in the Maryland woods while shooting a documentary about the local Blair Witch legend. All that remains is bone-chilling found video footage... and unanswered questions.

And yes, the film's promotional marketing back in '99 was so authentic-looking that moviegoers went into theaters believing they were watching an actual documentary gone wrong.

Lionsgate took to social media on Tuesday, August 4 to promote the special re-releases, which are now available to preorder here.

Over the years, Brad reached multiple Challenge finals before finally winning his first flagship championship on the original Cutthroat in 2010. Find theme words to fill the board.

• Theme words stay highlighted in blue when found.
• Drag or tap letters to create words. If tapping, double-tap the last letter to submit.
• Theme words fill the board entirely. No theme words overlap.

Find the “spangram.”

• The spangram describes the puzzle's theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. It may be two words.
• The spangram highlights in yellow when found.
• An example spangram with corresponding theme words: PEAR, FRUIT, BANANA, APPLE, etc.

Need a hint?

• Find non-theme words to get hints.
• For every three non-theme words you find, you earn a hint.
• Hints show the letters of a theme word. If there is already an active hint on the board, a hint will show that word's letter order.

Toto's 1982 track "Africa" has a love-and-hate relationship among fans and even the band, which saved them from being one-hit wonders and was inspired by a country they had never been to.

By the early 80s, Toto was on a thin line, unable to produce resonating hits since their success with "Hold the Line." According to LouderSound, keyboardist and principal songwriter David Paich penned the track "Rosanna," which gave them the green light from Columbia to produce the rest of the album, Toto IV.

Soon, Paich began working on "Africa" while he was messing around with his newly acquired Yamaha CS-80 keyboard. It made a "brassy sound" that became the opening riff of the track, and soon developed the chorus after humming a melody.

“'Hang on,' I thought. 'I’m a talented songwriter but I’m not this talented!' It was as if a higher power was writing through me, because this stuff was coming out like magic," he explained to The Guardian.

Paich revealed the track to the band and its inspiration being about Africa, with guitarist Steve Lukather having said they naturally found the last fact "hilarious." Not only had no one in the band ever gone to the continent, but "I don't know that Paich had ever flown over Africa."

"'If this is a hit,' I said, 'I’ll run naked down Hollywood Boulevard.' I thought the song had a brilliant tune, but I remember listening to the lyrics and going: 'Dave, man, Africa? We’re from north Hollywood. What the fuck are you writing about? ‘I bless the rains down in Africa?’ Are you Jesus, Dave?'" said the guitarist.

The keyboardist would reveal that the inspiration came from his own childhood and interests. One of the reasons he became a rock star was to see the world and grew up going to an all-boys Catholic school where "a lot of the teachers had done missionary work in Africa." Part of the track's lyrics came from stories he heard of missionaries blessing books, Bibles, and crops, and even the rain.

"They said loneliness and celibacy were the hardest things about life out there. Some of them never made it into the priesthood because they needed companionship. So I wrote about a person flying in to meet a lonely missionary. It’s a romanticised love story about Africa, based on how I’d always imagined it. The descriptions of its beautiful landscape came from what I’d read in National Geographic" explained Paich.

The track would be one of Toto's biggest hit singles, which was popular upon its release. It was only a year later, in 1983, that the track landed at the top of the charts at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Paich's ability to describe Africa's landscape led many to believe he had personal experience, with the keyboardist having first visited well after, in the 1990s.

"Africa" remains a rock staple among fans, and even a karaoke favorite. Even the band admits they have a love-hate relationship after playing the track for decades. Paich admits he "Sometimes I hate that f*cking song too," but relishes its newfound fans every generation.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs' release date has been pushed back.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons shared on Tuesday, Aug. 4, that Combs will now be released from New Jersey’s FCI Fort Dix on Feb. 20, 2028, per PEOPLE. The music mogul's release date has been moved several times.

Most recently, it was moved from Feb. 23, 2028, to Jan. 24, 2028.

This comes after Combs was reportedly involved in a fight at the federal prison at the end of July. At the time, ABC News reported that the other inmate “made a remark to Combs, which instigated the event." Following the fight, Combs was sent to solitary confinement

“It is unclear if he will be temporarily in solitary confinement or if it will be long-term,” The outlet detailed. “A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons said the agency does not comment on the ‘conditions of confinement, disciplinary matters, or other information regarding individual inmates due to privacy, safety, and security concerns.’"

Combs is serving a  50-month sentence after being convicted in 2025 on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He was acquitted on the more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. During his time behind bars, he is participating in a drug-abuse rehabilitation program, which can potentially reduce an inmate’s sentence by up to a year, according to the Bureau of Prisons.

It was also reported on Aug. 4 that the judge in Combs' criminal case signed an order authorizing the feds to take possession of the things confiscated during his arrest and raids on his homes, per TMZ. Among the items are multiple iPhones, iPads, hard drives, as well as $9,000 seized from the Park Hyatt Hotel on September 16, 2024.
