Michael Jackson’sThriller album ruled the Billboard 200 chart for 17 consecutive weeks before the soundtrack for the popular 1984 film Footloose overtook the King of Pop.

Jackson released his sixth studio album, Thriller, in November 1982. The project featured some of the singer’s biggest hits, including “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” and the title track.

Nearly three months after its debut, Thriller reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart on Feb. 26, 1983, where it remained for 17 weeks. The record returned to the top of the chart for two weeks in July and one week in September before experiencing another 17-week streak at No. 1 from December 1983 to April 1984.

While Jackson’s album seemed unstoppable at the time, the Footloose soundtrack overtook Thriller atop the Billboard 200 chart on April 21, 1984. The soundtrack stayed at No. 1 for 10 consecutive weeks before giving up the top slot to Huey Lewis and the News’ Sports album on June 30, 1984.

Released in January 1984, the Footloose soundtrack featured nine songs. Highlights included the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” by Deniece Williams, top 10 hit “Almost Paradise” by Ann Wilson and Mike Reno and top 40 hits “Holding Out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler, “Dancing in the Sheets” by Shalamar and “I’m Free (Heaven Helps the Man)” by Loggins.

“Footloose” and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” were both nominated for Best Original Song at the 1985 Academy Awards, though the accolade ultimately went to Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You” from The Woman in Red. The soundtrack and its songs also received five nods at the 1985 Grammy Awards: Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or a Television Special, Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, for “Footloose,” Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, for “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal and Best Rhythm and Blues Song for “Dancing in the Sheets.”

The Footloose film starred Kevin Bacon as Ren McCormack, a teenager who moves from Chicago to a small town where dancing is banned. The cast also included Lori Singer as Ariel Moore, John Lithgow as Reverend Shaw Moore and Dianne Wiest as Vi Moore. Following its February 1984 release in theaters, the movie was a success at the box office, raking in more than $80 million to become one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

The legacy of Footloose endures to this day. Not only is it one of the most beloved films of the ‘80s, but the soundtrack’s hits are just as recognizable today as they were when they first appeared on the charts.

A 2011 Footloose remake starred Kenny Wormald (Ren), Julianne Hough (Ariel), Andie MacDowell (Vi) and Dennis Quaid (Shaw). The soundtrack peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 chart and topped the Billboard Soundtrack Albums chart. The record featured eight new songs and four remakes of tracks from the original film’s soundtrack, including Blake Shelton’s rendition of “Footloose.”

Fifty-one years ago today, Have You Never Been Mellow was in the middle of a dominant run at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, capping off one of the most successful stretches of Olivia Newton-John’s career.

Released in February 1975, the album quickly became a multi-chart powerhouse. It not only topped the country albums chart for several weeks that spring, but also reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200—making Newton-John one of the few artists of the era to command both pop and country audiences at the same time.

The album’s success was driven by its title track, “Have You Never Been Mellow,” which had already climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its follow-up single, “Please Mr. Please,” extended the momentum, peaking at No. 3 and becoming another major crossover hit across pop, adult contemporary and country radio.

A Defining Run in the 1970s

Have You Never Been Mellow arrived during a remarkable hot streak for Newton-John. Just months earlier, she had also reached No. 1 with If You Love Me, Let Me Know, giving her back-to-back chart-topping albums in less than a year.

That rapid rise even set a record at the time. When Have You Never Been Mellow reached No. 1, just 154 days had passed since Olivia Newton-John previously topped the chart with If You Love Me, Let Me Know—marking the shortest gap between new No. 1 albums for a female artist.

Blending soft rock, country and easy listening, the album perfectly captured the sound that made Newton-John a staple across multiple formats. Critics praised her versatility and polished vocal style, while audiences embraced the album’s warm, accessible tone.

The success extended beyond the charts. At the 1976 American Music Awards, Have You Never Been Mellow was named Favorite Pop/Rock Album, beating out major releases from the Eagles and Elton John.

With over 100 million albums sold, Shania Twain is the best-selling female artist in country music history. But behind that stunning smile and unmistakable voice is a woman whose life has been shaped by loss, resilience and an unbreakable spirit.

Born Eilleen Regina Edwards on August 28, 1965, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Shania's parents divorced when she was young. Her mother got remarried, but life wasn't the fairytale she sings about in her hit songs. Shania and her siblings witnessed domestic violence at the hands of their stepfather and also faced severe poverty. "We didn't always know what, when, or where our next meal was going to come from," she once shared in a letter to fans. "Or when the heat was going to get turned back on in the middle of a Northern winter."

At just eight years old, Shania started singing in local bars to help support her family—often performing after midnight for whatever money she could earn. It wasn't the childhood most people picture when they hear "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" blasting on the radio. But it was a childhood filled with hard work, strength and a determined spirit that would ultimately shape her into a superstar.

Shania was barely out of her teens when her mom and stepdad were tragically killed in a car accident. While most 22-year-olds live life without a care in the world, she selflessly put her music dreams on hold to become the legal guardian of her three younger siblings and raise them on her own.

But she never let go of her dreams. In 1993, Shania signed with Mercury Nashville Records and released her self-titled debut album. While it didn't make much noise on the country charts, it did catch the ear of legendary rock producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange. He reached out to collaborate and the two fell in love. They married in 1993 and together, they co-wrote and produced The Woman in Me, which made Shania a star—followed by Come On Over, which sold over 40 million albums worldwide and still holds the record for best-selling country album of all time. You couldn't turn on the TV or radio without hearing songs like "You're Still the One," "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" Shania had become a global icon.

But just when it seemed like Shania had it all—a legendary career and a loving marriage that most people only dream of—everything came crashing down. In 2008, she discovered that her husband was having an affair with her best friend. "I lost my sense of trust, honesty and compassion," she later told Oprah Winfrey. "I crashed down and became what I consider an emotional mess. I've never been so miserable in my whole life."

To make matters worse, after being diagnosed with Lyme disease years earlier, doctors finally figured out that it had caused a condition called dysphonia, permanently damaging her vocal cords and threatening the voice that had carried her through so much.

But the resilient superstar refused to give up. She spent years rehabilitating her voice and in 2011, she returned to the spotlight stronger than ever. She debuted her best-selling memoir From This Moment On and dropped "Today Is Your Day"—her first single in years. Shania even found love again—marrying Frédéric Thiébaud during that same year. (In a twist of fate, he's the ex-husband of her ex-best friend who had the affair with her husband.) In 2012, she made her triumphant return with a Las Vegas residency that grossed over $43 million and in 2026, she continues to sell out arenas across the globe.

Four couples put their relationships to the test in Temptation Island Season 2. The final bonfire revealed if the couples left the island together, separately, or with a new partner. Netflix viewers will finally see what happened after filming in the reunion and the teaser is full of drama.

The season 2 cast reunited on The Viall Files, and the two episodes premiere this week. Part one will be released on Wednesday, April 22, and the second on Friday, April 24.

Kaylee Needham, Summit Wallace, Sydney McGregor, Mikey Bivens, Scarlett Bentley, Cole Mueller, Shyanne Blankenship, and Jackson Mason attended the reunion. The women sit on one couch facing another with the men. It's unclear if any tempters or temptresses will make an appearance.

Shyanne and Mikey are at odds in the teaser. She claimed she wanted to chat, and Mikey didn't believe her. "It looks bad when you see Shyanne getting f--ked," Mikey said. Shyanne told him to stop. Mikey later said he punched a hole in a wall while filming, but it wasn't shown.

Jackson came to the show with Shyanne and hooked up with other women. He said alcohol "killed me" while filming. Host Natalie Joy asked why he drank so much. "I hated it there," he answered.

It sounds like Kaylee and Summit might still be together. "I know he loves me wholeheartedly without a doubt," Kaylee told the hosts.

Nick Viall mentioned "little lies," and Scarlett asked Cole which lie he was thinking about to further a discussion. Scarlett and him also seem to disagree on when they were broken up.

The reunion must have been full of reveals to be split into two episodes. The Viall Files recently hosted the reunion for another Netflix series, Age of Attraction.

On April 21, 1989—37 years ago today—John Denver experienced a frightening moment that could have ended in tragedy. While piloting his own aircraft, the folk and country star was involved in a plane crash.

Though best known for timeless hits like "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Annie’s Song," Denver’s life offstage was deeply intertwined with aviation. The April 21 crash served as a sobering reminder of the risks he took pursuing that passion.

At the time, fans were stunned—but relieved—by the news that the beloved performer had survived without injury. The incident added another layer to Denver’s story, highlighting both his adventurous spirit and the unpredictability of flight.

A Moment That Stands Out in Retrospect

While Denver would continue his music career in the years that followed, this close call remains a notable chapter in his life. It’s especially poignant given that he would later die in a separate aviation accident in 1997.

In 1972, a documentary film premiered that would challenge audiences with one of the most direct and sobering portrayals of war ever put on film.

The film centers on the 1971 Winter Soldier Investigation, a gathering of Vietnam War veterans who publicly testified about their experiences during the conflict. Through firsthand accounts, the documentary offers a raw and unfiltered look at the realities of war, focusing on the emotional and psychological toll it took on those who served.

Among those featured is John Kerry, who served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Long before becoming Secretary of State, Kerry was a prominent voice in the anti-war movement and played a role in the discussions captured in the film. His presence underscores the significance of the event and highlights how veterans themselves became central figures in questioning the war.

Unlike traditional war films, Winter Soldier does not rely on dramatization or narrative storytelling. Instead, it allows veterans to speak for themselves, creating a powerful and often unsettling portrait of the conflict's human cost.

"I would like to talk to you a little bit about what the result is of the feelings these men carry with them after coming back from Vietnam," Kerry testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on April 22, 1971. "The country doesn't know it yet, but it has created a monster, a monster in the form of millions of men who have been taught to deal and to trade in violence, and who are given the chance to die for the biggest nothing in history; men who have returned with a sense of anger and a sense of betrayal which no one has yet grasped."

Though controversial at the time of its release, the documentary has since been recognized as an essential historical record. Its candid approach and willingness to confront difficult truths have helped solidify its place in film history.

"It was ultimately part of the flowering and the fruition of the anti-war movement," Michael Lesser, who was among the filmmakers of Winterfilm Collective that directed and produced the documentary, told NPR. "I think that films like Winter Soldier, other films made at the time, and certainly our protest movement, had a huge amount of effect on how that war came to an end. It seems that the film will have wider play now than it did then, and I think that when people see Winter Soldier, I don't think you can help but be morally and spiritually and emotionally impacted. And when you do that, hopefully that's what helps to create change.

More than five decades later, Winter Soldier remains a striking and important work one that continues to spark conversation about war, accountability and the voices of those who lived through it. Most notably, the film did not have a proper theatrical release, making its impact even more impressive and profound.

With its inclusion in Rotten Tomatoes' ranking, the film stands as a testament to the enduring power of documentary storytelling and its ability to shape public understanding of history.
