The 1980s were an era of music that produced a surprisingly high number of one-hit wonders. Certain tracks, like the band Dead or Alive's biggest hit, really impressed fans, but they failed to reach the same heights with other releases. Despite this, the band's 1984 song "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" remains one of the biggest tracks of the decade.

The English band Dead or Alive released "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" in late 1984 as a single from their second studio album, Youthquake. It was the lead single for the record, but other official singles included "Lover Come Back to Me," "In Too Deep," and "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me to the Doctor)."

The song was a huge hit, reaching the Top 10 in more than 10 countries. It became a No. 1 in Dead or Alive's home country of the U.K., while it also topped the charts in Canada, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. In the U.S., "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" just missed the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 11.

Because of this song, many people believe the band to be a one-hit wonder. But they actually had one other song, "Brand New Lover," break into the Top 20 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Meanwhile, Dead or Alive had multiple hit songs in the U.K. throughout the '80s, including "Something in My House," "Lover Come Back to Me," and "Turn Around and Count 2 Ten."

Singer Pete Burns was upset that "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" became a No. 1 hit in the U.K. In an interview he gave shortly before his death in 2016, he admitted, “One of the unhappiest days of my life was when Spin Me reached No.1 – and I mean really unhappy. Because I knew it would be downhill all the way after that.”

Despite Burns' feelings on the success of their biggest song, the band continued for many years. While it might feel like they're a one-hit wonder because of "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)," the song is still a classic over 40 years later. There's no denying that Dead or Alive made their mark on the world of music.

When The Challenge: Cutthroat premieres on Paramount+ on Aug. 5, longtime fans will notice the return of one of the franchise's most recognizable competitors.

Nelson Thomas is back for his first full season since a devastating 2023 car accident that ultimately resulted in the amputation of his right foot. His return is one of the biggest storylines heading into season 42, which was filmed across Thailand, with the longtime competitor saying he hopes to prove he can still compete at the highest level.

The season 42 cast bios note that Thomas is returning after the accident "ready to prove he is still a fierce competitor" while also hoping to inspire other amputees.

On March 5, 2023, Thomas was involved in a near-fatal single-car crash after driving while intoxicated.

Speaking to People one year later, Thomas recalled waking up surrounded by flames after his vehicle struck a pillar.

"When I woke up and I hit that pillar, I thought I was in hell," he said. "All I saw was flames and fire around me. It's such a vivid memory in my head, me getting pulled out of that burning car."

Thomas suffered catastrophic injuries to his right foot and spent months undergoing surgeries and rehabilitation. Doctors inserted three plates and 22 screws into his foot following six operations, and he pursued stem cell therapy, electrical stimulation and physical therapy in hopes of saving it. Although he began walking again sooner than expected, his recovery stalled when doctors discovered the bones weren't healing properly.

After months of treatments, Thomas made the difficult decision to have his right foot amputated in March 2024.

He told People he had exhausted every option before deciding that an amputation would give him the best long-term quality of life.

"I'm at peace with it," Thomas said. "I've done everything I can to try to save my foot."

Thomas explained that alternative procedures likely would have left him with little mobility while requiring additional surgeries and chronic pain. After speaking with other patients and praying about the decision, he chose to move forward.

"Mom, I'm ready to move forward with my life. I'm ready for a new chapter," he recalled telling his mother.

Thomas has been candid about the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The reality star acknowledged that he was driving while intoxicated and said he has struggled with guilt over what happened.

"I made the biggest mistake in my life. I own it," he told People, adding that he blamed himself for the accident and sought therapy to help process both the physical and emotional aftermath.

Throughout his recovery, Thomas has shared updates with fans and even appeared by video during The Challenge: Battle of the Eras to discuss his rehabilitation.

In a pre-show interview with Parade, Thomas said that returning to the show "was everything" for him after the "dark days" of the past few years.

"This comeback was everything, man. I keep saying it time and time again. This is bigger than me. I’m representing hope, resilience, faith, and everyone that’s looking for that second chance. And not only that, I represent a limb loss community, and that’s bigger than me," said Thomas. "So, being able to compete on a high level on this kind of platform is a blessing."

Thomas returns as one of the veteran competitors on The Challenge: Cutthroat, marking his first appearance since the spinoff show The Challenge: World Championship, which filmed in the fall of 2022 and aired in the spring of 2023. On that season, he and his partner Jujuy Jiménez were the second pair eliminated. Prior to that, the last OG Challenge season he competed on was season 38 Ride or Dies, where he and his partner Nurys Mateo finished in 8th place.

Nelson has also competed on Rivals III, Invasion of the Champions, Dirty 30, Vendettas, Final Reckoning, Total Madness, Double Agents and Spies, Lies & Allies. He has never won The Challenge, though he has made it to two finals, finishing runner-up on season 29 Invasion of the Champions and in 4th place on season 37 Spies, Lies & Allies.

The Challenge: Cutthroat season 42 premieres Wednesday, August 5 at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT on Paramount+ with two back-to-back episodes. Subsequent new episodes drop every Wednesday at the same time.

For fans who left theaters in the summer of 2008 feeling shortchanged, the wait for a fairer verdict is nearly over. The second big-screen outing for Mulder and Scully brought the pair back after the series ended, then, in many cases, divided the audience that had wanted the reunion the most.

That reunion gets a second life this month, and stay tuned to Parade for special exclusive content.

The trailer for the new R-rated director's cut, retitled The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn, arrived on Aug. 4, giving fans their first look at the darker film Chris Carter says he wanted to make all along. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return as Fox Mulder and Dr. Dana Scully, pulled back into an investigation years after leaving the FBI.

The official synopsis sets the pair on the case of a vanished federal agent and a string of abducted women. Their only lead is a disgraced, defrocked priest, played by Billy Connolly, who claims to see the crimes in psychic visions. The story moves through a cold winter landscape toward what the studio calls a human monstrosity at its center. Footage includes frozen bodies and grim experiments, all squarely in X-Files territory.

The new subtitle points to a source of Carter's frustration. Vrach Frankenshteyn is a Russian rendering of Victor Frankenstein, a nod to the Russian mad-scientist case that anchors the plot. Carter told Entertainment Weekly that with the theatrical version "our Frankenstein never completely left the operating room," and said the recut was a chance to finish the job.

Carter has been candid about what happened the first time. Speaking on David Duchovny's podcast last year, he said he "made it too scary" for the studio, which wanted a PG-13 film. He cut it down to satisfy 20th Century Fox, then was pushed to trim further by the ratings board. An unrated extended cut released on DVD in 2009 ran only about three and a half minutes longer, which makes this the first substantial reworking of the film.

Commercially, the 2008 release was no disaster. It grossed about $68.4 million worldwide against a $30 million budget, though it drew a 32% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a planned third film never materialized. The franchise turned instead to two television revivals in 2016 and 2018.

The restored version comes as there is more news than ever about the X-Files, with Ryan Coogler developing a new incarnation for Hulu. For now, the director's cut gives the 2008 film the treatment few movies ever get. The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn begins streaming Aug. 14 on Hulu and Disney+, with the original theatrical cut available the same day for anyone who wants to measure one against the other.

Jo Marie Payton, who starred on the hit sitcomFamily Matters, is asking fans for prayers.

Payton kicked off her role on the beloved TV series in 1989, starring as Harriette Winslow. The show, which also starred Reginald VelJohnson, Kellie Shanygne Williams, and Jaleel White, told the story of a Black Chicago family helmed by a loving father, Carl Winslow, a police officer. White, of course, rose to superstardom as the nerdy next-door neighbor Steve Urkel. But it was Payton who served as a steadying force in the material role on the series.

Payton just celebrated her 76th birthday on Monday. Looking happy and healthy, the star thanked fans for their love and support. Standing in the video, she said, “Thank you for all the wonderful birthday wishes, and keep praying for me.”

In the caption, she wrote, “Thank you all for the Birthday wishes…. Glad to be #76. Love Jo♥️.”

While Payton looked healthy in her birthday video, she's navigated difficulties in recent months. In a Facebook reel posted in April, Payton shared that she had suffered a medical emergency. While she didn't specify exactly what happened, her description of the effects sounds harrowing.

“Two months ago, I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t talk, at the start of this last year. But I’m walking better than I thought I would, talking better than I thought I would talk. I’m doing okay. Keep praying for me, I’ll be back,” she says in the video, which was shared by PEOPLE.

Yes! Kellie Shanygne Williams, who played Laura Winslow on the series, and her co-star, Telma Hopkins, who played Rachel, the sister of Harriette Winslow and aunt to Laura, recently started a podcast called Welcome to the Family with Telma and Kellie.

In a statement, Williams opened up about why she and Hopkins decided to create a podcast about making the iconic show.

“To this day, ‘Family Matters’ is one of the most-streamed sitcoms, and it is an honor for me to be able to go back in time and remember what it was like as a kid to grow up on the show and go through some of the same things my character, Laura Winslow, did,” Williams shared, Variety reported. “Not to mention doing it with my surrogate mom, Telma, who’s become one of my closest friends and is really another member of my family, as well as reconnecting with fans and hearing how the show impacted them. We hope fans enjoy listening to these episodes as much as we have enjoyed making them!”

Maybe! Bryton James, who played Richie Crawford on the series, told Entertainment Weekly that he’s “had an idea to take the show and turn it into an animated series.” It would involve “taking the old episodes and modernizing them and kind of starting from scratch for the new generation.”

Now a star on Beyond the Gates, James said the fate of the idea is “sitting in Warner Bros.’ hands right now… That plan is still kind of floating around out there, and I’m still trying to pursue it.”

ZoeSaldaña and NicoleKidman have a secret pastime while filming the 2023 series Lioness. 

The actresses told People they “tag team” finding the show’s creator, TaylorSheridan, between takes to tackle scenes that the duo thinks “don’t feel like they’re making any sense.” 

This has become their daily routine after working together for three seasons on the Paramount+ thriller. 

After greeting each other and spending “five or ten minutes” catching up, Saldaña shared that she and Kidman make their way to hair and makeup. Then they look for Sheridan. 

“We tag team finding out where Taylor is and seeing if he’s going to call us back because, when we need him, it’s always having to do with the work,” Saldaña shared.

Saldaña explained that she appreciates Kidman as both a coworker and a person. 

“It’s wonderful because I respect her so much,” she said. “Nicole… I admire her. She’s an incredibly talented woman, but what she is first and foremost, what I love the most, is she’s a mother. She’s a daughter. She’s a sister. She’s a friend.”

“And she plays all of those roles beautifully,” Saldaña added. “And she does it with so much love and unconditional support. That’s admirable. So everything about working with Nicole has been true joy.”

Kidman had nothing but nice things to say about her co-star. 

“I just love her,” the actress said about Saldaña. “She’s just so fun, and she’s so generous, and a girl’s girl.”

“So you get this kind of… we come into work, but then we have so many other things that we rely on,” Kidman continued. “So the work is here, but then we have all this.”

In 1963, a young girl with a powerhouse voice unleashed "I Will Follow Him" on the world. A teen devotion anthem, the song climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making Little Peggy March the youngest female to ever achieve the feat at barely 15 years old.

In an Instagram post shared earlier this week, March revealed that she will be joining Vogtland Open Air again this year. A tight-knit concert environment created by regional singer Stefanie Hertel, the popular outdoor music festival is set for Sept. 12 at the Parktheater Plauen in Germany.

"Hi everyone, I’ll be back in Germany soon, and I’m really looking forward to the Vogtland Open Air on September 12, 2026, at the Parktheater Plauen. Joining the lineup are @stefanie.hertel, @bernhardbrinkberlin, @eloydejong, @christian_lais_musik_82, and many more. I’d love to see you there!" she wrote in German.

March also dropped a link to tickets in her caption and signed off by wishing her fans a glorious summer: "In the meantime, I hope you’re enjoying the summer. Sending you lots of love, Peggy."

Born Margaret Annemarie Battavio in Landsdale, Pennsylvania, March won local singing contests, sang on local TV, and wowed friends and family at her cousin’s wedding, but it wasn’t until legendary producing duo Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore scooped her up that she became an international star.

Dubbing her Little Peggy March, a moniker that combined petite 4-foot-9 stature and her birth month of March, she released her first song at the age of 13. “Little Me,” the title song from a Broadway musical by Neil Simon, dropped in November 1962. Though the single failed to really make an impact, she wouldn’t have to wait long until her breakthrough. 

Released in January 1963, “I Will Follow Him” is an English-language pop version of a 1961French instrumental song called “Chariot” originally recorded by Franck Pourcel. It features lyrics written by Norman Gimble and reached the pinnacle spot on the all-genre chart in April that same year, camping out for three weeks. 

After struggling to replicate that level of U.S. success, March shifted her focus overseas. Setting her sights across the pond, she embraced her booming Europeanfanbase, dropped the “Little” from her name, and began what would become a successful and long-lasting musical career in Europe before settling in Germany with her new husband, Arnie Harris, in 1969.

March’s first appearance at Vogtland Open Air was last year. This year, she's expected to perform her chart-topping hit for a crowd of approximately 2,000, along with her other most notable songs including her biggest German-language hit, “Mit 17 hat man noch Träume,” which translates to, “At seventeen, you still have dreams.”

Amid a killer guitar solo, Styx's 1978 track "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" became a fan favorite as Tommy Shaw took inspiration from a friend going through a tough time.

Styx has been known for a repertoire of pop rock and soft rock tracks that gained them fame, like the sleeper hit "Lady" and "Lorelei." With the release of their eighth studio album, Pieces of Eight, Styx also released "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" as its first single, that capture interest.

The track became known as a hard rock/arena rock staple that landed them at No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 20 on Cash Box. Billboard commented on the song's prowess for having "riveting high-energy guitar licks and a powerful lead vocal."

"Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" tells the story of a man who becomes jobless and is mocked by his loved one while joining the unemployment line. The track's lyrics resonated with fans in the late '70s and were inspired by a true story involving Shaw's friend, Pete, who had been laid off from his railroad job.

“He loved his work, and here he was at the unemployment office, standing in line for a check,” Shaw told Guitar Player. “This was devastating to him. He didn’t want a handout. I grew up in a blue-collar family, so I understood how he felt. That’s what inspired the song lyrically. Then it was just a matter of picking up the guitar and putting it together.”

“It’s a song that still hits home,” he said. “No matter who you are, even if you’re in a successful rock band, you can relate to it. I know I do. I show up, suit up, do the job, and I love it. When something like that gets taken away from somebody, it’s terrible.”

Along with the lyrics, Shaw was inspired to pen the track thanks to a nautical expedition. He and the band had ended their tour and had gone deep-sea fishing in Maui. They had been given a "little Maui Wowie" and sat on the docks for 45 minutes without saying anything.

"I kept listening to the waves breaking. It was this lurching sound that became a soundscape that stuck in my head. I thought it might make a good intro for a song," explained Shaw.

He adds that he played the track for the band on an acoustic guitar and had a folk sound before keyboards and James Young's guitar turned it into a Styx track. "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" came together quickly, with Shaw having improvised his guitar solo and "winged it" while including a "pull-off thing" at the end he became known for.

“We always play it toward the start of the set, and it really sets the pace for the evening,” Shaw said. “And it still speaks to people. I get letters from fans who tell me, ‘I went through this when I got laid off.’ Styx has never been a political band, but I think we believe the basic things like everybody else: Love each other, respect each other, and work hard. That’s what the song’s all about.”

No one in the band expected the track to be a single, but they became incredibly "proud of it" and its resonating message.

Three-time Academy Award-nominated actress MichellePfeiffer is done with movies. 

The 68-year-old has found her happy place on ensemble television shows. She is featured in two hit series this year: Margo’s Got Money Troubles and The Madison. 

“I never want to star in another movie, I swear to God. I only want to do ensemble pieces. It’s so much more fun, I love it so much.” she said at The Hollywood Reporter's THR x Apple TV’s Leading the Narrative: The Women of Apple TV event on Sunday, August 2.

The actress spoke on the panel next to her fellow Emmy nominees ElleFanning, DaleDickey, KarolinaWydra, RheaSeehorn, and JessicaWilliams.

“I’ve just been so bowled over by the female performances on television and honestly, they’re just really owning TV,” Pfeiffer said on the panel about Margo’s Got Money Troubles. 

The Apple TV series follows Margo, the daughter of a former Hooter's waitress and an ex-pro wrestler. She is a recent college dropout with a new baby, struggling to pay her bills, who turns to OnlyFans. It is based on RufiThorpe’s bestselling novel of the same name.

“I love how complicated and flawed all these characters are, and it really reminds me of that famous RobinWilliams quote where he says, ‘Remember that everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about, and be kind,’” Pfeiffer explained. That kind of, for me, sums up the show and the message of the show, and I’m really proud to be a part of it.”

The Scarface actress sees herself as a “wallflower.” Her character, Shyanne, on the Apple TV series is quite different from Pfeiffer. 

“It was so fun to be able to live vicariously through her and to see the looks on the crew’s faces whenever Shyanne would show up to the set. They were just, ‘Oh God, now look what she’s wearing!’ Everybody needs a little Shyanne in their life and in their closet.”

When "I Think I Love You" arrived in 1970, it did more than introduce a television show's fictional family band: it launched a global phenomenon.

Recorded for The Partridge Family, the song featured David Cassidy, who was just 20 years old when it was released. With its irresistible melody and Cassidy's charismatic vocal performance, the single quickly became one of the biggest hits of the decade and turned the young actor into one of the world's most recognizable pop stars.

"I was an actor, although everybody at the studio and the network knew that I could sing and play guitar, which I did in the actual filmed screen test," Cassidy told Pop Entertainment. "I didn't sing, but there was an old Stratocaster there and I asked them to plug it in. Right before the first line of dialogue, as they were rolling the cameras, I played a little bit of Hendrix, only so that they knew that I could actually play."

The song was written by acclaimed songwriter Tony Romeo and produced by Wes Farrell, who assembled a group of top Los Angeles session musicians to create the polished recording. While The Partridge Family appeared to perform the music on television, Cassidy provided the lead vocals that gave the record its unmistakable energy and emotional warmth.

Listeners embraced it immediately.

Released in September 1970, "I Think I Love You" raced up the charts, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for three weeks. It also topped charts in several other countries and became one of the best-selling singles of the year, helping propel The Partridge Family soundtrack to enormous commercial success.

The hit transformed Cassidy's career almost overnight.

Already gaining attention through the ABC television series, he suddenly found himself at the center of an international wave of "Cassidymania." Sold-out concerts, magazine covers, and screaming fans followed as he became one of the defining teen idols of the early 1970s, with a string of additional hit singles and albums soon after.

Despite being closely associated with television, "I Think I Love You" proved it had staying power far beyond the small screen.

The song has remained a fixture on oldies and classic pop playlists for decades, while its instantly recognizable chorus has introduced new generations of listeners to Cassidy's music. It has also been covered by numerous artists and continues to rank among the signature songs of the era.

"It's hard to call it just a record," Cassidy said in an interview. "It's almost like an earmark of a whole generation, an innocence. People love it; I love it. It's a great song, and great songs survive and they get recut and redone. With a great song, you can do it lots of different ways in lots of different styles." 

More than 55 years after its release, "I Think I Love You" remains one of the defining pop-rock hits of the early 1970s. Featuring a 20 year-old David Cassidy at the beginning of his extraordinary rise to fame, the song became an era-defining No. 1 hit whose appeal has never faded.

Ella Langley has reached a new career milestone as “Choosin’ Texas” climbs to No. 3 on the U.K. Official Singles Chart, giving the country star her first-ever Top 3 hit on the all-genre chart.

The song is currently No. 3 on the Official Chart midweek update and is on course to reach its highest-ever position in the U.K. when the full chart is published Friday. If it stays in the Top 3, the result will add another major achievement to what has already become a breakout year for Langley.

“Choosin’ Texas” is already the biggest country single of 2026 in Britain. Its latest rise also shows that the song’s success is reaching far beyond the country music audience.

The track has spent five weeks in the U.K. Top 10 and 20 weeks in the Top 40. It earned Gold certification last month after passing 400,000 combined sales and streams in the U.K. Globally, the song has also passed 564 million Spotify streams.

The new U.K. chart milestone comes as “Choosin’ Texas” continues a record-breaking run in the United States.

The song has now spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, tying it for the fourth-longest reign in the chart’s history. It is one of only seven songs to have reached at least 16 weeks at No. 1 since the chart began in 1958.

The current list places “Choosin’ Texas” alongside several major chart hits. Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” leads with 22 weeks, followed by Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Old Town Road,” each with 19 weeks.

Langley’s song shares the 16-week mark with Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night,” “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber and Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day.”

For the July 24-30 tracking period, “Choosin’ Texas” recorded 25.5 million official streams in the United States, up 1% from the previous week. It also collected 52.3 million radio airplay audience impressions and sold 9,000 copies.

The success of “Choosin’ Texas” has also helped drive interest in Langley’s album Dandelion, which debuted at No. 7 on the U.K. Official Albums Chart in April.

Other songs from the album have also connected with U.K. listeners. “Be Her,” “Bottom of Her Boots” and “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” her collaboration with Morgan Wallen, have all appeared on the U.K. charts.

“Choosin’ Texas” is no longer simply a major country hit. Its continued performance across all-genre charts shows how widely the song has connected with listeners.

In a June interview with PEOPLE, Langley spoke about adjusting to the attention that has come with her rapid rise.

“I think my whole life I've really dedicated it to this craft and doing this job,” the singer said. “And now that I'm up here and experiencing this, I'm also excited about settling down one day and pursuing the human version of my life.”

The Alabama-raised singer moved to Nashville around 2019 and spent years writing songs, playing gigs and building relationships in the music community before her current breakthrough.

Now, “Choosin’ Texas” is giving Langley another major first.

But the clear winner (so far) is a couple of wildly gifted Florida boys: Duane Allman and Dickey Betts of The Allman Brothers Band.

Pioneers of rock’s twin-lead harmony, Allman and Betts were two of the most influential guitarists of their generation. Individually, they were masters. But together, they were masterful, creating a musical chinwag that helped define Southern rock. Few songs better showcase the pair’s brilliant chemistry than the 1972 Southern rock masterpiece “Blue Sky.”

An upbeat, country-tinged jam, “Blue Sky” was written solely by Betts but features some joyful dual-lead guitar work. Betts penned the song about his then-girlfriend, Sandy Wabegijig, whose Native Canadianlast name translates to “clear blue sky.”

“[‘Blue Sky’] is a cool song,” Betts once told USA Today. “I wrote that for … a girl whose last name was Wabegijig, which means ‘clear blue sky.’ … And I thought, this would be a better song if I just sang it to the sky instead of to a woman. That was a very good move that could have made or broken that song. It made it more universal.”

However, what began as an ode to love and sunny skies now carries heavy emotional significance as a bittersweet elegy following thetragic death of Duane Allman in a motorcycle crash in 1971.

Released in 1972 on the band’s third studio album,Eat a Peach, “Blue Sky” was recorded right before Allman died. Featuring some of his final studio guitar work, the song is a showcase for the duo's contrasting yet complementary soloing styles and their seamless trade-offs. It’s intertwining masterwork that has guitar enthusiasts and classic rock fans still obsessing over them half a century later.

Following Guitar World’s poll, posted Tuesday, Aug. 4, fans repeatedly cited the duo, posting comments like, “Seriously? How is this even a question … smh. It’s Duane and Dickey,” and, “Easy … Duane Allman and Dicky Betts.” The two were actually one of the only duos to spark several agreement threads and replies.

Other duos repeatedly mentioned included the guitar gods mentioned above, as well as Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC, Don Felder and Joe Walsh of the Eagles, and ScottGorham and Brian Robertson of Thin Lizzy. But the readers’ choice ultimately came down to the electric chemistry between Allman and Betts.

The pair’s seamless guitar work is heard throughout The Allman Brothers Band’s catalog. Still, the purest example has to be “Blue Sky,” with other songs like “Whipping Post” and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” further cementing their legacy as one of rock’s greatest guitar duos.

Following Allman’s death, Betts kept the band alive.

In 1973, The Allman Brothers Band released “Ramblin’ Man,” a Southern rock anthem written and sung by Betts, and released on Brothers and Sisters. That song became the band’s first and only single to reach No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. And even though Allman was around for the genesis of the song in 1971, fans still point to “Blue Sky” as the defining document of the Duane-Betts partnership.

Despite never being released as a single, “Blue Sky” transcended eras to amass more than 90 million streams on digital platforms. It’s a testament to the effortless guitar exchanges between Allman and Betts on the song, and if the thoughts and opinions of Guitar World’s readers are any indication, no duo has ever matched their magic.

Olivia Rodrigo is making her stance crystal clear in a new campaign with Planned Parenthood.

The Grammy winner appeared in an Instagram video shared Tuesday, August 4, by Planned Parenthood and Daisy Chain Fields, the music festival she founded, using one of her own lyrics to deliver a bold message about reproductive health care.

The video opens with on-screen text reading, "learning that nearly 30 Planned Parenthood health centers have closed since President Trump signed a law 'defunding' Planned Parenthood." It features the 23-year-old  mouthing the lyrics to her song "my way" with other supporters dancing behind her. "Here is the part where the girl gets pissed, and the girl is me. Did you get that hint?"

The post's caption continued the lyrical theme, writing, "don't go, go making decisions where you don't belong 😒."

The campaign comes just weeks before Rodrigo's inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival, which takes place August 29 in Irvine, California. Founded by the singer, the festival is built around the idea that "joy, community, and creativity can inspire meaningful change," with net proceeds benefiting organizations that advocate for women and girls. The lineup includes Chappell Roan, Stevie Nicks, Doechii, Katseye, Mitski, Sarah McLachlan, and Rodrigo herself, among many others.

The new video is also part of Rodrigo's ongoing partnership with Planned Parenthood. Just before the latest campaign, she appeared in another video for the organization, playfully attempting to name the many services available at Planned Parenthood health centers (which she nailed, by the way).

According to a July report released by Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Planned Parenthood Federation of America, nearly 30 Planned Parenthood health centers have closed since legislation signed by President Donald Trump sought to strip federal funding from the organization. The report also found Medicaid visits to Planned Parenthood locations dropped by roughly 25 percent, representing more than 250,000 fewer patient visits compared with the previous year.

A song about the cost of greed found its largest audience in an unlikely place.

In 1971, occult-rock group Coven recorded "One Tin Soldier" for the independent action drama Billy Jack. With 21-year-old Jinx Dawson singing its cautionary story, the ballad gave the group its only mainstream hit and became closely associated with the film.

"One Tin Soldier" was written by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter and first recorded by Canadian group The Original Caste in 1969. The song tells of people from a valley who attack a peaceful mountain kingdom in search of treasure. After killing its residents, they discover that the treasure beneath a stone contains a message rather than riches: "Peace on Earth was all it said."

Coven's rendition presented a very different side of the group. Formed in Chicago during the late 1960s, Coven had become known for its occult imagery, theatrical concerts and 1969 debut album, Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls. Dawson, an Indiana native who had studied opera, brought a controlled and powerful vocal performance to the gentle ballad.

Credited as "One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)," the recording was used as the theme for Billy Jack, which starred Tom Laughlin as a former Green Beret confronting violence and injustice. As the movie attracted a growing audience, the song climbed to No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song returned to the chart twice as Billy Jack continued finding new viewers. A later recording reached No. 79 in 1973, while the original version reappeared and peaked at No. 73 in 1974. No other Coven song entered the Hot 100, making the group a one-hit wonder in the traditional sense, even though its lone hit charted three separate times.

More than five decades later, the ballad remains remembered for its simple warning about violence committed in the name of greed and righteousness. Coven may have seemed like an unlikely group to carry that message, but Dawson's performance helped turn it into a song that lasted far beyond the film that introduced it.

Did you have "Connection" on a loop in 1995? I sure did. I also was addicted to the music video with the big black boots coming down on the beat. Sadly, Elastica, the the band behind it, split 25 years ago and its frontwoman swore off music entirely for a life in painting. Which is exactly why a two-word tease from them is pretty exciting.

Elastica resurfaced on July 31 with a vintage photo of its original lineup and a short caption: "Missed us?" The band added that it had been busy behind the scenes and told fans to keep their eyes peeled, promising that exciting things were in the works. What that means, the group did not say. New music, live shows and archival releases are all still on the table, and for longtime fans, the lack of specifics is almost beside the point.

The tease is especially surprising given the woman behind it. Frontwoman Justine Frischmann formed Elastica in London in 1992 with drummer Justin Welch after the pair left Suede, and she spent the Britpop years at the center of the "Cool Britannia" story, in part through her relationships with Suede's Brett Anderson and Blur's Damon Albarn. Named Best New Band at the 1994 NME Awards, the group turned singles like "Stutter" and "Line Up" into defining moments of the era. The band's 1995 self-titled debut became the fastest-selling debut album in UK history and broke through in America, where "Connection" reached the upper rungs of the modern rock chart.

Then it mostly stopped. Elastica released a second album, The Menace, in 2000 and split soon after. Frischmann stepped away from music almost entirely, moving to the United States and building a career as a painter. In past interviews she was blunt about it, saying she no longer had the desire to make music and had found her medium in visual art. That's exactly why that two-word tease from the band is such a jolt.

Other Britpop bands are also coming to the forefront. Oasis reunited for a 2025 tour, and Blur, Pulp and Suede have all returned to stages in recent years. The photo the band shared showed all four classic members, Frischmann and Welch alongside guitarist Donna Matthews and bassist Annie Holland, a grouping that has rarely appeared together since the '90s. Welch has played with a reunited Lush and currently backs The Jesus and Mary Chain, while Frischmann once co-wrote early material with M.I.A.

A band that seemed permanently filed under "past tense" is speaking in the present again, and doing so with some mystery. Whatever comes next, as several outlets noted, the door that looked firmly shut for 25 years is open a crack, and a generation of fans is excited.

After nearly two years of silence, Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush are cooking something up for their dedicated fans, who've been not-so-patiently waiting for news from the popular band.

While we don't know what, we are pleased to announce that something is officially on its way.

"It's been a minute..." the country duo wrote on social media, along with a brief clip of them bowing on stage that glitched into a black screen that announced something is "coming soon."

It's their first post since Dec. 2024, which also coincides with their last music release, an EP called There Goes the Neighborhood, earlier that year. It's also the last time they toured, co-headlining on the Take Me Home Tour with Little Big Town.

It's been a minute...

For her part, Nettles has been hard at work at getting her own musical off the ground. She recently wrapped up a run of Giulia: The Poison Queen of Palermo at Perelman Performing Arts Center in New York City. The performer penned the book, music, and lyrics for the production based on the life of Italian apothecary Giulia Tofana, who began dealing in arsenic after an act of self-defense went wrong.

The new playwright recently teased the future of the musical, which was a hit off-Broadway, so a new Sugarland update was certainly not on fans' radar right now.

"IM GONNA PUKE WHAT DOES THIS MEAN," one demanded, while another said they were "Crying already," even without any context.

At a recent fan event in Nashville, Tennessee, the ageless 64-year-old actor looked every bit the same as he did while stealing hearts by the pool on Melrose Place. A sliver of silver in his hair is the only sign that time has passed, if anything giving him the distinguished look of a silver fox.

It's as though time stood still, and fans were quick to take notice, with one writing on social media, "My lord, hasn't aged."
