Todd Rundgren, the rock legend behind the smash hit "Hello It's Me," announced the cancellation of a series of tour shows amid his 2026 tour.

Billed as the Damned If I Do tour, the '70s music icon is booked and busy with a string of concerts across the U.S., Europe and the U.K. this year as he celebrates his music legacy throughout his diverse half-century career.

As part of the multi-leg run, he was initially scheduled for a 10-date trek across the U.K. and Europe in September.

Unfortunately, he was forced to halt five shows in Europe due to “logistical” reasons.

In an Instagram update, Rundgren apologized for the inconvenience caused by the cancellation.

The affected dates include shows in France, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands.

However, the management advised ticket holders that they are expected to receive refunds through their original point of purchase.

Meanwhile, fans voiced their disappointment in the comments section, especially since many were thrilled to see Rundgren perform live.

“It was a dream coming true going to see Todd in Paris. Very sad,” one wrote.

“I’ve been a Todd fan forever. Have never seen him in concert (with the exception of playing with RINGO). And now Amsterdam is cancelled. Deeply disappointed and utterly heartbroken,” a follower said.

The same goes for a fan who mentioned, “This is really a devastating blow. My five-year-old son has been talking nonstop about how excited he is to meet Todd. It has been a dream of his…one that finally seemed within reach.”

On the other hand, the remaining European and U.K. dates will push through, kicking off on Sept. 6 in Revislate, Italy, followed by shows in London, Bristol, Manchester and Glasgow.

In addition, fans can also look forward to the upcoming U.S. fall leg, which will begin on Oct. 21 in California, with the 20-date trek concluding in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Nov. 21.

When The Cure released "Boys Don't Cry" in 1979, frontman Robert Smith was just 20 years old and determined to take the band's music in a new direction. The two-and-a-half-minute single didn't chart in the U.K. at the time, but nearly 47 years later, it's become one of the band's most powerful songs. 

Smith, Michael Dempsey and Lol Tolhurst wrote "Boys Don't Cry" together, with Fiction Records founder Chris Parry producing. The track was a big departure from the band's debut, Three Imaginary Boys. Smith later said that album had been shaped too much by others, and he was frustrated the band didn't have more control over their own sound.

“I had dreamed of making an album, and suddenly, we were making it, and my input was being disregarded,” Smith told Rolling Stone. “I decided from that day on, we would always pay for ourselves and therefore retain total control.”

"Boys Don't Cry" came from that same place, questioning why men were discouraged from showing vulnerability.

“When I was growing up, there was peer pressure on you to conform to be a certain way,” Smith said. “And as an English boy at the time, you’re encouraged not to show your emotion to any degree.” 

“And I couldn’t help but show my emotions when I was younger. I never found it awkward showing my emotions,” he continued. “I couldn’t really continue without showing my emotions; you’d have to be a pretty boring singer to do that.”

Instead of falling in line, Smith said he chose to push back. “So I kind of made a big thing about it. I thought, Well, it’s part of my nature to rail against being told not to do something.”

The band also wanted to steer away from writing shallow songs, another knock against their debut. “Our songs came from our lives, like our diary,” Tolhurst explained. “A lot of things that happened in my life and in Robert’s life were very upsetting. So that’s what we wrote about.”

Parry believed the single had hit potential right from the start. “‘Boys Don’t Cry’ was my pick for the top 10,” he said in the Cure’s biography, Ten Imaginary Years.

But when the song was released on June 12, 1979, it didn't chart in the U.K. Parry blamed Polydor, Fiction's parent label, for failing to properly support the release.

“‘Boys Don’t Cry’ was a hit song and it should have been a hit,” Parry said. “Robert was disappointed and he had a right to be. It was a farce.”

Fast forward a few years, after some lineup changes and hit songs like "A Forest," "The Walk," "The Lovecats," "The Caterpillar" and "In Between Days," Fiction decided "Boys Don't Cry" deserved another chance. They reissued it in 1986 with a new vocal, a remix and a music video. 

This time, it reached No. 22 in the U.K. and also charted in Australia, Germany, Spain and France.

Nearly five decades on, "Boys Don't Cry" remains one of The Cure's biggest hits, having even passed one billion streams on Spotify.

Brittany Cartwright isn't holding back, providing her unfiltered thoughts following the news that her estranged husband Jax Taylor is dating her former publicist Lori Krebs.

The Bravo star spoke about this shocking new romance during an interview with PEOPLE, which shared a video posted on Aug. 4.

Cartwright and Taylor first met in 2015 while the third season of Vanderpump Rules was filming. She made her first appearance on the hit Bravo show in season 4 before becoming a series regular until her and Taylor's departure after season 8. And with that, her first appearance was with a car full of boxes, as she had packed up her life in Kentucky to move to Los Angeles to live with Taylor. The two went through a rough patch in 2017 after Taylor admitted to cheating on her with Vanderpump Rules alum Faith Stowers, and while they tried to move past it, the two broke up at the end of season 6. However, they got back together off-screen, with Cartwright being a huge source of comfort to Taylor following the unexpected passing of his father. In June 2018, they got engaged and married a year later. Cartwright and Taylor welcomed their first child, Cruz Michael Cauchi, in April 2021, but just a few years later, in February 2024, they announced that they had separated. Cartwright officially filed for divorce in August 2024.

By the summer of 1985, Tears for Fears had become one of the biggest bands in the world.

Leading the charge was "Shout," an anthemic rock song fronted by Roland Orzabal, who was just 23 years old when the single was released. Built around a commanding chorus and a message of emotional release, the song quickly became the duo's signature hit and, 41 years ago today, found itself at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

"Shout" marked a dramatic evolution for the British duo.

Written by Orzabal, Ian Stanley and Curt Smith, the song appeared on the band's second album, Songs from the Big Chair, which showcased a bigger, more expansive sound than their synth-pop debut.

"I had the chorus to 'Shout' and I had a rhythm which was stolen from a Talking Heads track from off 'Remain in Light,'" Orzabal said in an interview. "[Keyboardist] Ian [Stanley] and [producer] Chris [Hughes] played around with the rhythm, and they came up with the flute motif which runs through the verse and the chorus. Ian suggested various notes on the verse and that sent me off on the verse melody."

The song's layered production, soaring guitars, and unforgettable refrain helped distinguish Tears for Fears from many of their contemporaries.

The lyrics also carried a deeper meaning.

Rather than encouraging anger or confrontation, Orzabal has explained that "Shout" was inspired by the idea of expressing bottled-up emotions instead of suppressing them. The song reflected themes that had long interested the band, particularly the psychological concepts explored throughout their early work.

"You could see the slow transition from the personal perspective to a more social and political perspective," said Orzabal.

Listeners embraced it around the world.

Released as the album's second single, “Shout” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart, and hit No. 1 in numerous other countries. It became one of the biggest-selling singles of 1985 and helped propel Songs from the Big Chair to success in multiple countries, cementing Tears for Fears as international stars.

Its legacy has endured for decades.

"Shout" remains a staple of classic rock and '80s radio, has appeared in countless films and television shows, and has been covered by artists across multiple genres. Its massive chorus and universal message continue to resonate with listeners, making it one of the defining songs of its era.

"It's a great song to have in your arsenal!" Orzabal told Classic Pop Mag. "I really felt that track at the time but, after decades of experience, I must admit I can sing it now without feeling it. It's still a great song to do at the end, but it’s more one for the fans' emotions now."

Forty-one years after reaching No. 1, "Shout" remains one of the most recognizable rock songs of the 1980s. Featuring a 23-year-old Roland Orzabal at the height of his creative powers, the song became an era-defining hit whose impact continues to echo across generations.

American author Laura Dave had an interest in writing when she was just a child, and she was able to turn that dream into several hit novels. In 2021, she published the thriller The Last Thing He Told Me, which became an instant New YorkTimes bestseller and spent more than 80 weeks on the list. Perez Hilton allegedly live-streamed his own self-harm video on Tuesday, August 4.

The self-proclaimed "OG Influencer" took to TikTok Live fully nude, where he suffered what many viewers are calling a "psychotic break." While it's unclear what prompted the meltdown, Hilton previously suffered a near-fatal health crisis earlier this year.

The internet personality opened up about his 21-day hospital stay that he claimed was caused by his own "stupidity."

"It was the worst and best thing that’s ever happened to me," he explained in a March 23 YouTube video. "Before I was hospitalized, I had the flu. I had the flu for about a week. I'm not a person who is a partier or abuses things. I took my medication for the flu for a week."

According to Perez, he was "stupidly" taking his medications on an empty stomach, which caused him to develop an ulcer, "then a perforation, and then sepsis."

"The first few days were a lot of pain and constant tests," he explained. “They couldn’t find where the perforation was."

He ultimately underwent a laparoscopic surgery to rid his body of the infection.

"Now that I’m home, I’m not 100 percent. I brought the hospital with me…They had to insert a PICC line, which is like a big fancy scary IV with two lines, and one goes to my heart," he said. "I said, 'Okay, I’ll do whatever you recommend because I’m not going back to the hospital. It’s a one-and-done for me.'"

Shortly after his release, Perez found himself back in the hospital with a blood clot in his leg.

"I’m back at the best hospital in Las Vegas. I’ve already seen some of the nurses that took care of me for 21 days when I was here fighting and beating sepsis, thanks to these amazing doctors, nurses, and God," Hilton said in an April Instagram update. "And now, I’m back, and I have to have emergency surgery tomorrow. And I’m so happy. I’m so grateful. Because this is a blessing from God. We caught this early."

He added, "If that blood clot had gone to my lungs, or my heart, it could have been real bad. So tomorrow I’m having a thrombectomy, where they are knocking me out. I’m being put under in emergency surgery and they’re going to remove the fully occluded blood clot."

Despite his health crises, the blogger has remained active on social media, with his most recent video uploaded to YouTube on Sunday, August 2.

Perez Hilton Self-Harm

Police responded to Perez Hilton's Miami home on the evening of Tuesday, August 4, after receiving multiple calls about apparent self-harm being live streamed on social media.

The father of three was reportedly home alone at the time, but viewers claimed he was fully nude during a TikTok Live and exhibiting unusual and disturbing behavior.

According to social media users who witnessed the ordeal, Perez allegedly was in possession of a butcher knife and covered in a red substance that appeared to be blood.

"In many incidents involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis or actively harming themselves, deputies prioritize de-escalation by creating time, distance, and opportunities for communication," a statement from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, per Rolling Stone. "Unless there is an immediate threat to others, slowing the situation and utilizing crisis intervention techniques can reduce the likelihood of a suicide-by-cop encounter and minimize the risk of injury to the individual, deputies, and the public."

"At this time, deputies have tactically disengaged while continuing to monitor the situation and providing the needed support to his family," the statement explained.

According to some viewers, Perez appeared to be "slashing himself everywhere."

Eventually, TikTok ended the live, took down the video, and blocked his account.

Paramedics were later seen taking someone from the home into an ambulance, TMZ reported.

"The individual has been safely recovered and transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to a local hospital, where he is receiving medical attention," Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office PIO told the outlet. "The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Crisis Response Unit and Licensed Mental Health Professionals are also on scene providing support and resources to the individual's family."

"We are aware of the concerning content circulating online involving our client, Perez Hilton," Hilton's agents, Dante Rusciolelli and Rebekah Kochan, said in a statement, per TMZ. "At this time, we have not been able to make direct contact with him, despite our ongoing efforts to reach him. Our primary concern is Perez's health and well being, as well as the well being of his family. Until we have confirmed information, we will not speculate or comment further. We appreciate everyone's concern and ask that his privacy be respected during this time."

Police responded to the Miami home of celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton after it appeared he was harming himself during a livestream. In the clips posted to social media, Hilton was covered in blood and was using an object to cut himself.

Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Page Six that they received "multiple calls” of “an individual live-streaming acts of self-harm on social media” on the night of Tuesday, Aug. 4. Officers were dispatched and confirmed that Hilton was alone inside his home, going on to speak with family members, which led to them deciding to “tactically disengage while continuing to monitor the situation.”

“In many incidents involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis or actively harming themselves, deputies prioritize de-escalation by creating time, distance, and opportunities for communication,” the Miami-Dade County said in a statement. “Unless there is an immediate threat to others, slowing the situation and utilizing crisis intervention techniques can reduce the likelihood of a suicide-by-cop encounter and minimize the risk of injury to the individual, deputies, and the public."

Variety further reports that the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office also confirmed Hilton was safely transported from his home to a local hospital and is receiving medical attention.

Golden Artists Entertainment Co-CEOs Dante Rusciolelli and Rebekah Kochan also released a statement to TMZ about Hilton, who is their client.

"We are aware of the concerning content circulating online involving our client, Perez Hilton," the statement said. "At this time, we have not been able to make direct contact with him, despite our ongoing efforts to reach him. Our primary concern is Perez's health and well-being, as well as the well-being of his family. Until we have confirmed information, we will not speculate or comment further.

"We appreciate everyone's concern and ask that his privacy be respected during this time."

As the search for Nancy Guthrie stretches past the six-month mark, a reporter who spent weeks digging into the case says the investigation may have lost its best opportunity almost immediately.

During a recent appearance on Brian Entin Investigates, Wall Street Journal reporter Valerie Bauerlein reflected on her publication's in-depth investigation into Guthrie's disappearance, arguing that a series of early missteps and missed opportunities in the first 48 hours set the case back before it had truly begun.

"It was such a high-profile case 6 months ago, and there was so many incremental pieces of information," Bauerlein said in a video shared to YouTube on Tuesday, August 4. "It was really hard to figure out where we were in the case...What
were the steps of the investigation so far and where are we? How close are we to solving the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie?"

She continued, "Your opportunity to get the most and best information you can is that first 24 and 48 hours. And there were so many decisions made in that critical time period that were missteps, bad luck, [and] bad calls.

According to Bauerlein, that the unsecured crime scene could have led to contamination, pointing to reporters accessing the front porch, and a food delivery person ringing Guthrie's doorbell just days after her disappearance.

"That set them really back on their heels," she said, adding that the lack of "breaks" in the case has not helped investigators solve Guthrie's disappearance.

"So there were sort of like some bad calls, some bad luck, but then also, and I think this is what you and many people have been following the case recently have felt, a little bit of bad blood, kind of like bad feeling between different parties," Bauerlein continued.

The 84-year-old mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie was taken from her home in the early morning hours of February 1. Investigators were later able to uncover previously lost footage from Guthrie's front doorbell camera.

However, in the six months since her disappearance, the investigation has seemingly stalled.

"[This is] the only case, the only open missing person's case in Pima County, that from 1986, as we understand it, where not just was the person abducted in their home, but she was older than 60 years old," Bauerlein revealed. "It just doesn't happen. So, in fairness, they didn't know that this was a violent abduction because it just doesn't happen very often."

By 1975, the Bee Gees knew they needed a fresh start.

Just four years earlier, Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb had topped the Billboard Hot 100 with "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." But after a string of disappointing albums and singles, the brothers found themselves, in Barry Gibb's words, "sort of out of vogue." According to "The Billboard Book of Number One Hits," Atlantic Records even declined to release one of the group's albums, while the brothers found themselves playing clubs where audiences were more interested in drinking than listening.

"We were trying to make a comeback," Barry later recalled to Music & Musicians magazine. "It was 1975."

That comeback arrived in early August 1975, when "Jive Talkin'" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lead single from Main Course became the Bee Gees' first chart-topper in four years and marked the beginning of a remarkable second act that would soon make them the defining voices of the disco era—as Ultimate Classic Rock called it, "Jive Talkin'" was their "comeback song."

A Miami Bridge Sparked the Bee Gees' Biggest Reinvention

The inspiration for "Jive Talkin'" came from an unlikely place: a bridge in Miami.

While recording Main Course at Criteria Studios, the Bee Gees drove across the Julia Tuttle Causeway each night between the studio and Biscayne Bay. Barry couldn't shake the rhythmic "clickety-clackety" sound their car made crossing the bridge.

"The bridge made a clickety-clackety sound," Barry remembered. "It stayed in my head, and one night, coming back from the studio, I just started singing this thing over top of the rhythm. Robin and Maurice picked up on it, and we actually finished the song late that night."

The song's working title was "Drive Talking," but that changed after producer Arif Mardin explained that the phrase "jive talkin'" was slang for telling lies, not dancing, as the brothers had assumed. The Gibbs quickly reworked the lyrics to match the new title while keeping the infectious groove that had inspired the song in the first place.

That groove also reflected a broader shift in the band's sound.

"There was the idea of us moving more into R&B, becoming more Americanized," Barry said. Recording in Miami proved to be the perfect change of scenery, a move he later credited to fellow RSO artist Eric Clapton.

After Clapton told Barry that recording 461 Ocean Boulevard in America had fueled his own comeback, he suggested the Bee Gees do the same. "Why don't you try to work in another country like America and see if you're influenced by it?" Barry recalled Clapton saying. "We did, and never looked back."

'Jive Talkin'' Opened the Door to the Bee Gees' Greatest Era

The Bee Gees and their label even took an unconventional approach to releasing the single.

Promotional copies of "Jive Talkin'" were mailed to radio stations in plain white sleeves with no artist identification, allowing DJs to judge the song without any preconceived notions about the band. It was a tactic the Bee Gees had used years earlier with "New York Mining Disaster 1941," when some listeners even wondered if it might be a new Beatles record.

The gamble paid off.

"Jive Talkin'" climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the Bee Gees their biggest hit in years and signaling that their comeback was complete. More importantly, it introduced the sleek R&B and dance sound that would soon define the group through hits like "You Should Be Dancing," "Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever" and "How Deep Is Your Love."

Today, 51 years after it reached No. 1, "Jive Talkin'" remains far more than just another chart-topping single. It was the record that transformed the Bee Gees from a band searching for a second chance into one of the biggest acts in music history.

BEAT, the supergroup led by King Crimson icon Adrian Belew, announced a massive North American tour for 2026.

The all-star band, composed of Belew along with King Crimson's longtime bassist Tony Levin, virtuoso rock guitarist Steve Vai and Tool drummer Danny Carey, is scheduled for a 40-date run this fall.

In an Instagram update, the band proudly unveiled the details of the upcoming tour as they prepare to return for one final North American trek.

Kicking things off in October, the tour will begin in California and travel across Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Wisconsin and more before heading to Canada in November and continuing through major cities across the U.S.

BEAT's North American tour will conclude in December with a two-night run in California.

For this event, the band will feature songs from King Crimson's catalog, celebrating the English rock band's legendary musical legacy.

In addition, BEAT announced a lineup change, with Terry Bozzio, who previously played with Frank Zappa and co-founded Missing Persons, replacing Danny Carey following the drummer's prior commitments to Tool.

Hinting at what to expect from their 40-date tour, the post also includes a special message from Belew.

He teased fans that the forthcoming tour will offer a different experience from BEAT's previous shows.

"For those of you who've seen BEAT live, it's important to note we'll be adding some material from '90s Crim to our Fall tour. Along with the addition of Superman drummer Terry Bozzio, we feel this will result in a new experience for our audience — and this may be your last chance to hear this band play these songs. We're very excited to play for you again. Don't miss it!" the frontman shared.

Tickets will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. local time, while the artist presale will begin at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Aug. 4.

Three decades after forming in San Francisco, Imperial Teen is gearing up for another chapter.

The beloved '90s indie rock band has announced its seventh studio album, All Over You, arriving Oct. 9 via Merge Records. Alongside the announcement, the group shared the album's lead single, "Overdrive," and confirmed its first run of headline tour dates since 2020.

"Overdrive" perfectly captures the qualities that have made Imperial Teen a cult favorite for decades.

The song came together during a last-minute burst of inspiration while recording in Provincetown. Guitarist and vocalist Will Schwartz recorded the final vocal take just before catching a ferry, with bandmate Roddy Bottum describing the session as “magical.” The track also includes a playful nod to the Sex Pistols and the album's only lyrical reference to the internet.

The new record reflects the band's unique creative process.

Although Bottum, Schwartz, bassist Jone Stebbins and drummer Lynn Truell now live in different cities, they continue to write by gathering for occasional creative retreats before reconvening to record.

"We live great distances away from each other, so initially, we get together to collaborate, write, and create," Stebbins said in a statement. "When we have enough material, we reconvene to record. Both scenarios, creating and recording, take multiple trips, sometimes with big lapses of time in between due to our various schedules."

The process has defined several of the band's albums, pulling back the curtain at the long stretches in between.

"Imperial Teen works best when everyone is involved," Bottum said in a 2020 interview. "So we always try to aim for most people singing. But then we get into the studio and there are so many options. We’re singing along, doing the songs, and just add things as we go."

Musically, All Over You expands on the band's signature sound.

The album blends bubblegum pop melodies, dual male-female harmonies, crunchy guitars, electronic textures and power-pop hooks while exploring themes of desire, disconnection, and the challenges of making art. "We want to make people dance and think and feel at the same time," Schwartz said.

The announcement also marks Imperial Teen's long-awaited return to the stage.

Following two sold-out performances with The Breeders at San Francisco's Castro Theatre in August, the band will embark on a headline tour beginning in October with stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Boston, Brooklyn, Philadelphia and Durham.

Since emerging in the mid-1990s, Imperial Teen has carved out a distinctive place in alternative rock through albums including Seasick, What Is Not to Love and Feel the Sound. Their blend of sharp songwriting, infectious melodies, and wry humor has earned the quartet a devoted following while influencing generations of indie pop artists.

Thirty years after forming, Imperial Teen continues to evolve without losing the qualities that made the band so beloved in the first place. With All Over You and a return to touring, the veteran rockers are proving their creative chemistry remains as vibrant as ever.

Blondie had already become one of new wave’s biggest names by the time the band released “Atomic” in 1980. Led by singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein, the group took punk and mixed it with pop, disco and all kinds of unexpected influences. 

Formed in New York in 1974, Blondie quickly developed a sound that stood apart from many of their new wave peers. Their early success came with their self-titled debut album, which helped land them tours with artists like David Bowie and Iggy Pop. But it was their third album, Parallel Lines, that got them onto the radio and into the charts.

That record produced some of the band’s biggest early hits, including “Hanging on the Telephone” and “Heart of Glass.” The latter’s disco influence led some critics to accuse Blondie of selling out, but the band’s willingness to experiment became one of their greatest strengths.

By the time Blondie released their fourth album, Eat to the Beat, in 1979, they were already international stars. The album featured “Atomic,” a song that showcased the band’s ability to combine their new wave sound with something different.

"Atomic" came out in 1980 and reached No. 1 on the U.K. Singles Chart, while it peaked at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. Despite the difference in chart performance, it became one of the records people instantly associate with Blondie.

The song was written by Harry and keyboardist Jimmy Destri, who originally set out to create something with a similar feel to “Heart of Glass.”

“He was trying to do something like ‘Heart of Glass’, and then somehow or another we gave it the Spaghetti Western treatment,” she said, per Far Out. 

You can hear that influence in "Atomic," from its dramatic guitars to its film-like sound. It blends new wave, disco rhythms and even western twang into something totally unique.

Harry also explained that the song’s lyrics came together naturally as Blondie worked through the music. 

“The lyrics, well, a lot of the time I would write while the band were just playing the song and trying to figure it out. I would just be scatting along with them and I would just start going, ‘Ooooooh, your hair is beautiful,” she once said. 

While listeners have debated the meaning behind “Atomic,” Harry has said the word itself was chosen because it sounded powerful rather than because it carried a specific message. 

Whatever the meaning, one thing's for sure. The song's catchy rhythm, Harry's powerhouse vocals and Blondie's genre-bending sound are what made it work.

Glenn Hughes, the legendary former bassist and lead vocalist for Deep Purple known as “The Voice of Rock,” made the announcement today that classic rock fans have been dreading for months: He's stepping away from live performances due to health concerns.

“This past year, I've had some health issues,” Hughes said in a statement, per Blabbermouth. “The results from numerous MRIs, CT scans, and an echocardiogram have alerted my medical team that I need another open-heart surgery. I really have no option and no choice, as health is my number one priority. Grateful to have been chosen with a life full of the gift of music. … Thank you for walking beside me."

The news doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, since earlier this year, Hughes called off The Chosen YearsTour, originally scheduled for March 27 to May 10, citing minor health issues. But it still comes as a bummer, as fans were looking forward to ThePurple Daisies encore this fall and want only good things and good health for the rock star.

According to the outlet, Hughes' last live performance was on May 30 at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, Illinois. Joining The Dead Daisies, Hughes performed alongside guitarist Doug Aldrich, drummer Tommy Clufetos, and guitarist David Lowy for a “50/50 set.”

The overwhelmingly positive response to the shared “Purple Daisies” show spurred on a second, initially scheduled for Oct. 2 in Agoura Hills, California. However, following the recent news, that show has been canceled along with any other upcoming sets.

Hughes joined Deep Purple in 1973, replacing bassist/vocalist Roger Glover. He performed on three of the band’s studio albums: Burn, Stormbringer, and Taste the Band. Since the band’s initial breakup in 1976, he has not rejoined the group, although he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Deep Purple in 2016.

In the late ’70s, Hughes launched his solo career, withPlay Me Out serving as his debut album. A blend of hard rock, soul, and funk, his solo catalog is full of acclaimed releases including From Now On…(1994), Addiction (1996), Music for the Divine(2006), and his latest, Chosen (2025).

It's not uncommon for legendary artists to have a much lower opinion of their most popular work than the majority of fans, and Bob Weir is the perfect example. The Grateful Dead icon was a driving force behind some of the band's most beloved tunes, such as "Sugar Magnolia" and "Jack Straw" (both co-written with lyricist Robert Hunter). But as it turns out, a song that's now considered by many to be one of his best was a tune he later confessed to hating.

The seventh and final track on the Grateful Dead's 1973 album Wake of the Flood, "Weather Report Suite" is a three-part song lasting almost 13 minutes long. Weir wrote the song with the help of John Barlow and Bobby and Eric Andersen...and a bottle of whiskey, apparently.

"The fast part ['Let It Grow'] was one of the few times Barlow and I sat and wrote words and music simultaneously," Weir explained in a 2001 interview with Alan Paul. "The slow part was written completely separately."

According to Weir, "Weather Report Suite" went on to take a frustratingly "sappy" turn.

"I liked the music, but it sounded like a love song, which is not my forte," Weir said. "Then Eric Andersen and I got a bottle of whiskey and wrote this sappy love song. I always hated what we did, which is why that part of the song vanished for years. Those words couldn't pass my lips without me visibly retching, and I'm not going to do anything that I'm embarrassed about walking into. I do enough stuff that I'm embarrassed about after the fact!"

The song did indeed "vanish" — or at least part of it did. The performance of "Weather Report Suite" in the video above, which was filmed during production of The Grateful Dead Movie, was the last time the band played all three parts of the song live, according to David Lemieux, the Grateful Dead's audiovisual archivist. ("Let It Grow," however, became a concert staple.)

Despite Weir's feelings about "Weather Report Suite," the song remains a fan-favorite over 50 years later.

"Teenage me blasted ['Weather Report Suite'], winding through New Hampshire mountain roads at midnight, getting out of my car in dense fog to look at darkness," Phish bassist Mike Gordon told Rolling Stone in 2018.

Earlier this year, following Weir's death at the age of 78, music critic Andrew Sacher of Brooklyn Vegan ranked "Weather Report Suite" at #1 on his list of Weir's 10 best songs.

"It starts out as gentle folk rock that isn’t miles away from Workingman’s Dead/American Beauty/Ace, with some nice organ, pedal steel, and angelic harmonies fleshing things out," Sacher wrote. "Then new things start to come in. First gospel harmonies, and then it changes even more, when it switches from its lazy-Sunday first half to the more sinister-sounding 'Let It Grow' portion. Keith Godchaux starts pounding on his piano, and Bobby delivers some of his most commanding pop songwriting. Then enters the triumphant horns and strings."

"This was a turning point for the Dead, an orchestral rock song cycle that rivaled Tommy and side B of Abbey Road, both in ambition and in how fun it is to listen to," Sacher added. "It helped set the tone for some of the most exciting aspects of the Dead’s ’70s studio material, and it wouldn’t have happened without Bob Weir."

Not bad for a sappy love song.
