1973 No. 1 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’ Became a Timeless Anthem

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 2:12am

When Roberta Flack released her version of "Killing Me Softly with His Song" in 1973, it quickly set itself apart. The track’s stripped-back sound and lyrics made it feel personal in a way few hits did at the time.

More than 50 years later, it still serves as a timeless anthem that continues to connect with listeners. Rolling Stone even named the track as one of the greatest songs of all time, ranking it #273 out of 500 in their updated 2021 list.

"Killing Me Softly with His Song" was originally composed as a folk song by Charles Fox and co-written by Norman Gimbel and Lori Lieberman in late 1971. After Gimbel and Fox denied Liberman songwriting credit, she decided to record her own version of the song, but it never charted. Instead, multiple artists recorded their own covers, including Roberta Flack.

View the original article to see embedded media.

Flack first heard the song for the first time while on a flight from Los Angeles to New York City, and was immediately hooked by the title. In September 1972, Flack performed her cover as an encore while opening for Quincy Jones' tour stop in the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, which the audience loved. A few months later, in January 1973, Flack released her version of "Killing Me Softly With His Song," which was included in her fourth studio album, Killing Me Softly, and spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. That same year, the singer won the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Record of the Year.

American hip-hop group Fugees also released a cover of "Killing Me Softly With His Song" in 1996. Although it became an international hit, it did not appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Fox suggested that Flack's version was more successful than the original because her "version was faster and [had] a strong backbeat that wasn't in the original." The late pop-jazz singer, who grew up in a musical family, was very active in her church's community and played the piano for them during masses.

"My classical background made it possible for me to try a number of things," she said. "I changed parts of the chord structure and chose to end on a major chord. It wasn't written that way."

Despite Flack's version being more successful than the original, Lieberman described the rendition as "one of the greatest things to ever happen."

"I have endless gratitude to Roberta Flack for hearing something within that song to bring it to the world and to change not just my life, but so many with her artistry, her talent and her heart," Lieberman told the New York Post in February 2025 when Flack passed away due to health complications. "She was an incredible musician, an incredible pianist and a beautiful singer. She's one of the greatest artists of my generation."

The Grammy-winning singer and pianist has always been known for her smooth and intimate vocal style and her blend of soul, jazz and pop. She rose to fame in the early 1970s with her hits like "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Killing Me Softly with His Song" and "Feel Like Makin’ Love". Over the decades, Flack has remained an influential voice, shaping the sound of modern R&B and inspiring generations of artists. In February 2025, she passed away due to a heart attack and complications with ALS. She was 88 years old.

"Killing Me Softly With His Song" and the rest of Flack's discography are available on all major streaming platforms.

1974 Hit Film Ranked Among ‘Best Movies’ of All Time Became a Timeless Classic

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 1:20am

A landmark 1974 romance drama has once again secured its place in film history after being ranked among the greatest movies ever made.

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, was recently placed at No. 125 on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the “300 Best Movies of All Time,” reaffirming its enduring legacy decades after its original release.

The film, known in German as Angst essen Seele auf, has long been celebrated as one of Fassbinder’s most powerful works. It first gained major recognition after winning top honors at the Cannes Film Festival 1974, including the International Federation of Film Critics award and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.

Today, its continued inclusion in global rankings highlights how its story still resonates with audiences around the world.

Over time, the film’s reputation has only grown stronger. It now holds a perfect 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and has been ranked among the greatest films in world cinema by Sight & Sound. Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese even included it in his list of “39 Essential Foreign Films for a Young Filmmaker.”

At its core, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul tells a deeply human story. Emmi, played by Brigitte Mira, is a lonely 60-year-old cleaning woman. One rainy night, she enters a bar and meets Ali, played by El Hedi ben Salem. What begins as a simple dance quickly turns into a relationship that shocks those around them.

Their marriage faces harsh judgment. Emmi’s own children reject her, and her neighbors treat the couple with coldness. Ali also faces discrimination as a foreign worker. The film shows how society’s fear and prejudice can hurt people, even when they are simply trying to be happy.

One of the film’s most memorable lines comes from Ali himself: “Fear eat soul up.” The broken grammar reflects his struggle with the German language, but the meaning is clear and powerful. It shows how fear can destroy love, trust, and connection.

The film’s influence can also be seen in its connection to director Douglas Sirk, whose works like All That Heaven Allows inspired Fassbinder’s storytelling style. The emotional depth and social themes helped define the New German Cinema movement of the 1970s.

Even today, the film is regularly shown in cinemas and festivals around the world. Its themes of racism, loneliness and acceptance remain relevant, especially in modern discussions about immigration and social division.

'White Lotus' Fan-Favorite to Host Reality Show Where Celebs Join 'The Mob'

Wed, 04/22/2026 - 11:21pm

Fans of The White Lotus have their sights set on the future as season 4 takes shape — though it feels like we were just watching the third installment's new episodes as they dropped on HBO.

Season 3 had its fair share of Emmy nominees, including the reliably superb Parker Posey. She also has her eyes on the future these days, given that we've learned of an exciting new reality series she'll be hosting — and executive producing.

Per magazines including Variety, Hulu announced on Wednesday, April 22 that it has given a series order to The Mob, a competition show that will follow celebrities as they check into a lavish Italian villa and proceed to "shake down, hustle and whack their way to win up to $250,000 in cash prizes. Every episode, they will tackle mob movie-inspired jobs to survive."

As part of the twist, the group of celebrities must vote to make one of them the mob family “don” — giving that person absolute power to decide “who makes money, who stays, and who ultimately gets whacked," Variety also noted on Wednesday. But will that don maintain the family’s loyalty, or will they ultimately be overthrown?

The celebrity cast for season 1 includes:

  • Aida Turturro (The Sopranos)
  • Willam Belli (RuPaul’s Drag Race)
  • Demi Engemann (The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives)
  • Maria Georgas (Bachelor Nation)
  • Joe Gorga (The Real Housewives of New Jersey)
  • Harry Jowsey (Let’s Marry Harry)
  • Chelsea Lazkani (Selling Sunset)
  • Debi Mazar (Younger)
  • Bella Palk (Love Overboard)
  • Shane Parton (Bachelor Nation)
  • rapper Romeo
  • Bruno Tonioli (Dancing With the Stars)

“We love reality TV and the whole mafia genre. With The Mob we wanted to create an addictive format centered around the most powerful contestant in reality TV history,” said Adam Wood and Mat Steiner at Primal Media — where the show's format was created — in a statement, per Deadline.

Their statement continued, "A world where charm, strategy, and survival instincts all collide. We’re thrilled to be co-producing the series with Studio Lambert for Hulu, working with a fearless cast of celebrities who are all primed 'to whack or be whacked.'"

48 Years Ago Today, Iconic ’70s Actor Once Blacklisted in Hollywood Died at 76

Wed, 04/22/2026 - 11:03pm

Forty-eight years ago today, Hollywood lost Will Geer, a notable actor best known for his warm,

grandfatherly screen presence.

The Indiana native cemented his legendary status after landing the iconic role of Grandpa Zebulon "Zeb" Walton, the stubborn yet affectionate patriarch in the historical drama TV series The Waltons.

The role earned him the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series award at the 30th Primetime Emmy Awards, making this his first major acting award.

Along with his co-star Ellen Corby, who took home Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Geer hit the stage and delivered a playful acceptance speech, thanking the award-giving body for finally getting him in a category.

“When you get to this age, you appreciate things,” he said, adding, “I thank the old people, all across the country, the fathers and the mothers and especially the children in the school. Because I know they will not stand for having their elders told at what time they may or may not see the program. I would like to present this officially to the little schoolhouse on Walton's Mountain.”

Before his claim to fame on screen, Geer, who had always loved entertainment, had his acting skills put to the test on Broadway around the late 1920s when he joined productions like Tobacco Road and Of Mice and Men.

At the time, he even scored a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his role as Doctor H.C. Curry in 110 in the Shade.

From acting to music, there’s nothing that Geer couldn't do. He teamed up with folk musician Woody Guthrie for tours and events.

In addition, he also released an album along with longtime friend Guthrie with Bound for Glory: Songs and Stories of Woody Guthrie in 1956.

Amid his achievements and success in the spotlight, Geer once faced career setbacks after he was blacklisted in Hollywood.

Besides working as a singer and an actor, he was also an activist and was associated in a Communist Party.

At the time, he was actively involved in left-wing causes, including labor organizing.

During the anti-communist McCarthy era, he was called by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) to testify but refused to act as an informant, choosing not to name associates or friends with similar political beliefs.

Unfortunately, this resulted in the actor being blacklisted in Hollywood.

Following the vibrant life of Geer, he passed away on April 22, 1978, in Los Angeles at the age of 76 due to a respiratory ailment.

A Music Legend Born 90 Years Ago Still Shapes Sound Today

Wed, 04/22/2026 - 11:00pm

Roy Orbison was born 90 years ago today on April 23, 1936. With his soaring vocals and emotional ballads, Orbison carved out a style that set him apart from his peers and would go on to become one of the most distinctive voices in music history.

He scored a massive global hit in 1964 with "Oh, Pretty Woman," which topped the charts in both the U.S. and the U.K. But that song was just one of many successes. Over the course of his career, Orbison landed more than 20 Top 40 hits in the United States and over 30 in the United Kingdom, building a catalog that continues to resonate decades later.

From Texas Roots to Rock and Roll Fame

Raised in Texas, Orbison began performing as a teenager in a rockabilly and country band. His early talent led him to Sun Records in Memphis, where he joined a roster that helped shape the future of rock and roll.

But it was his ability to blend vulnerability with powerful vocal delivery that truly set him apart, influencing generations of artists across genres.

A Late-Career Supergroup Moment

In the final chapter of his career, Orbison joined the supergroup Traveling Wilburys alongside legends like George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne. Their 1988 single "Handle With Care" became a standout hit and introduced Orbison to a new generation of listeners.

Orbison died on Dec. 6, 1988, but his influence has never faded. Known for his signature dark sunglasses and unmistakable voice, he remains one of the most iconic and enduring figures in popular music.

Ninety years after his birth, his songs—and the emotion behind them—still strike a chord.

1963 Classic Was a No. 1 Hit 63 Years Ago Today

Wed, 04/22/2026 - 10:57pm

Sixty-three years ago, a simple yet unforgettable song ruled the charts and captured the sound of a generation.

“He’s So Fine” by The Chiffons sat at No. 1 on the R&B chart on April 22, 1963, during a four-week run that also saw it dominate the Billboard Hot 100. The track became one of the most recognizable hits of the early 1960s and remains a defining record of the girl group era.

Written by Ronnie Mack, “He’s So Fine” quickly rose after its early 1963 release, reaching the top of multiple charts in the United States. It held the No. 1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 starting March 30, 1963, and stayed there for four straight weeks. The song also topped the soul singles chart and later ranked as Billboard’s No. 5 song of the year.

The Chiffons, a young group from the Bronx, recorded the track after Mack discovered them singing together in their high school lunchroom. He later became their manager and brought them into a recording session produced by The Tokens.

The session produced “He’s So Fine” along with other songs, but it was this track, with its now-famous “doo-lang doo-lang doo-lang” backing vocals, that stood out.

Interestingly, the song almost never reached the public. Capitol Records initially rejected it, calling it “too trite ... too simple.” After being turned down by multiple labels, the producers finally placed it with Laurie Records.

Once released, “He’s So Fine” became an instant hit. It sold more than one million copies and earned a gold disc. The song also charted internationally, reaching No. 1 in Canada and New Zealand and peaking at No. 16 in the United Kingdom.

Its success helped launch The Chiffons into stardom. The group followed up with more hits in 1963, including “One Fine Day,” which reached No. 5, and other charting singles like “A Love So Fine” and “I Have a Boyfriend.” However, “He’s So Fine” remained their biggest achievement and only No. 1 hit.

The song’s influence stretched beyond its initial success. Its catchy melody and structure became a blueprint for future pop recordings. It was later ranked No. 73 on Billboard’s list of the 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time, highlighting its lasting impact.

“He’s So Fine” is also remembered for its role in one of the most talked-about legal cases in music history. In 1971, Bright Tunes Music Corporation filed a lawsuit against George Harrison, claiming his hit “My Sweet Lord” copied elements of the 1963 song.

After years of legal delays, the case went to trial in 1976. The judge ruled that Harrison had committed “subconscious” plagiarism. While the court acknowledged there was no intent to copy, the similarities between the two songs were considered too close.

The legal battle continued for years, eventually leading to a financial settlement. Harrison was required to pay for the rights connected to the song’s publishing company, marking a major moment in copyright law and setting a precedent for future music cases.

The controversy also brought renewed attention to “He’s So Fine.” In 1975, The Chiffons even recorded their own version of “My Sweet Lord,” turning the situation into a unique moment in pop history.

Beyond the courtroom, the song continued to live on through covers and reinterpretations. Country singer Jody Miller scored a Top 10 country hit with her version in 1971, while later remakes in 1978 also made appearances on the charts. The track was even featured on the soundtrack of the 1979 film Quadrophenia, introducing it to a new audience.

Colman Domingo Pushes Back on Claims That Michael Jackson Biopic ‘Whitewashes’ Abuse Allegations

Wed, 04/22/2026 - 10:22pm

Colman Domingo is addressing criticism of his new film Michael which details the life and career of Michael Jackson.

The film, which hits theaters on Friday, April 24, has received backlash for omitting Jackson's sexual abuse allegations. Domingo stars alongside Nia Long as Jackson's parents, Joe and Katherine, and the two actors addressed the controversy on Today.

Co-host Craig Melvin noted how the film ends in 1988 which was four years before the first sexual abuse allegations against Jackson were made. Melvin asked Domingo and Long, What would you say to folks who see this" and believed the film "whitewashed that part" of Jackson's legacy.

Domingo emphasized how the film "takes place from the '60s to 1988, so it does not go into the first allegations in, what, 2005? Basically, we center it on the makings of Michael. It's an intimate portrait of who Michael is."

Long also weighed in on the discussion, suggesting to Melvin that the film chose to omit that part of Jackson's life as its goal was to his story "through his eyes."

Domingo added, "Through his eyes, truly. That's what it is. That's what this film is, and there's the possibility of there being a part two that may deal with other things that may happen afterwards. This is about the making of Michael, how he was raised, and how he was trying to find his voice as an artist."

The first sexual abuse allegation against Jackson was in 1993 when Evan Chandler claimed Jackson sexually abused his 13-year old son Jordan. The investigation was closed a year later following a settlement and a grand jury chose not to indict Jackson.

According to claims in a report by Variety on Tuesday, April 7, the film did not depict any sexual abuse allegations against Jackson because of a clause in the Chandler settlement that bars any depiction or mention of Jordan in film.

Furthermore, Michael director, Antoine Fuqua planned to depict that period in Jackson's life per the Variety report. A scene was shot where investigators searching Neverland for evidence but this scene was scrapped after Jackson's estate discovered the clause in the Chandler settlement.

Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson portrays the late musician in the film.

What was the challenge tonight on America’s Culinary Cup, and who won it? Matt Peters and Buddha Lo

Photo: Jackie Brown/CBS

Judge Michael Cimarusti, who's famous for his seafood cuisine, chose fish as the protein for the challenge, because it is one of the most difficult things to master in the professional kitchen. The three methods the chefs were allowed to cook with were grilling, poaching, and searing. They were also paired in teams of two and since Buddha Lo won last week’s challenge, he got to pick the teams and the cooking methods for each.

He chose Matt as his partner and poaching as their cooking method. Then he paired Keith and Chris on searing and Katie and Cara on grilling.

As usual, Padma, Michael and Wylie Dufresne awarded points based on Taste, Creativity, Presentation and Mastery of the Commandment with each quality worth 5 points, so each judge’s total would be 20 points for a cumulative possibility of 60 points.

The scores were:

Buddha/Matt: 57
Katie/Cara: 48
Keith/Chris: 35

Who lost the elimination challenge on America’s Culinary Cup tonight? Keith Corbin

The elimination challenge was a four-way showdown between Katie, Cara, Chris and Keith, and in keeping with the consistency commandment, the challenge was to make three French omelets, one for each of the judges.

Padma’s least consistent omelet was Keith, Michael’s was also Keith, and Wylie’s was Keith’s as well, which ended his time in the America’s Culinary Cup kitchen.

“One thing I’ve been consistent at was fighting in this competition for my place, and I’m proud of that,” Keith said. “I am someone who grew up with less than other people. I come from Watts. I overcame the gangs, prison, poverty; I didn’t go to culinary school. My introduction to the kitchen was survival. If I inspire one person where I come from, I’ve won.”

America’s Culinary Cup airs Wednesday nights at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Streams next day on Paramount+.

College sweethearts Sydney McGregor and Mikey Bivens went on Temptation Island Season 2. Sydney hoped Mikey would leave the island having deeper conversations with her and take their relationship seriously. The cast reunited and she revealed who she dated after the show.

Sydney chose to leave the island with Xzavier Odom in the finale. But she revealed on The Viall Files that she gave her relationship with Mikey a second shot four days after filming.

"Everything was going so good and it was going phenomenal," Mikey explained. "But the thing about it was, I was holding onto what I experienced on that island. And that was not fair to her." He said if they argued, then he would jab at her about dating Xzavier.

Sydney said she considered trying again because Mikey said he was misrepresented in the clips at the bonfire. "That's not what I said," she quoted him. "Like, they clipped it up. They edited it. So I was like, so you're telling me what I saw and how I moved after that was off of something fake?"

Sydney felt guilty, and she did have real feelings for Xzavier. She said she told Xzavier that she couldn't jump into a new relationship after the show.

She ended the relationship with Mikey after he stopped putting in effort to be romantic. Sydney said she doesn't think she could date him again. It's been four months since they saw each other before the reunion.

Part one ended with a cliffhanger. Xzavier recorded a video for Sydney, and we'll see it in part two, which will be released on Friday, April 24.

’70s Music Icon Facing Serious Health Battle

Wed, 04/22/2026 - 9:13pm

Lou Gramm, the former frontman of the band Foreigner, shared a heartbreaking update about ex-bandmate Mick Jones.

While in the middle of the Historic Farewell Tour in celebration of their 50th anniversary, the 75-year-old vocalist spoke about his current relationship with the legendary guitarist.

During his guest appearance on Lipps Service, he told host Scott Lipps about his “pretty good” connection with Jones.

However, he revealed further details about his health, noting that the musician is battling an advanced stage of his illness.

“He's in the end stages of Alzheimer's,” he told the channel, adding, “So our conversations are… I can't tell how he is. He's distant."

Lou Gramm and Mick Jones of Foreigner perform at The Omni Coliseum in Atlanta, Ga. on March 25, 1994.

In 2024, Jones publicly revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease “several years ago,” indicating that the illness had been present long before his confirmation.

“I want everyone to know that I am doing alright,” the musician mentioned in a statement as cited by Billboard. “However, I’ve always liked to be at my best when performing onstage, and sadly, at present, I find that a bit difficult. I am still very much involved in the background with Foreigner and remain a presence. Parkinson’s is a daily struggle; the important thing is to persevere and remind myself of the wonderful career I’ve had in music.”

Jones concluded the statement with a heartfelt message to fans, expressing his gratitude for the love and support he and the band Foreigner have received over the years.

“I want you to know I appreciate your support; it always means so very much to me, but especially so at this point in my life,” he added.

On the other hand, the American Brain Foundation notes that Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer's disease may be connected because both involve neurodegenerative processes and can share overlapping symptoms.

Moreover, they often coexist, particularly in the later stages.

Due to his health status, Jones was forced to halt touring to focus on his recovery.

Amid his hiatus, the 70-year-old guitarist has been teaming up with The Michael J. Fox Foundation, the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to research and a cure for Parkinson's disease.

As for Gramm, he rejoined the band for a string of select performances for their tour.

He initially departed from Foreigner in 1990. After rejoining the band in 1992, he made his exit and left for good in early 2003 to focus on his solo career.

Now, as the band continues their 50th Anniversary tour, Foreigner is scheduled to have their European and U.K. tour in June and July, followed by a North American tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd, along with special guest Six Gun Sally, until August.

‘Days of Our Lives’ Newest Star Explains Why Doing the ‘Opposite of Stefano’ Is the Only Way to Save His Family

Wed, 04/22/2026 - 9:06pm

Days of Our Lives newcomer Conner Floyd made his debut on April 21, 2026, and is now opening up about joining the long-running series and his take on Chad DiMera.

The role of Chad DiMera was originated in 2009 by Casey Deidrick. After his departure in 2013, the orle was recast in 2014 with Billy Flynn, who has portrayed Chad on and off ever since, including appearances in the digital series Chad and Abby in Paris and Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem.

Floyd recently spoke with reporter Erin Goldsby of The Soap Scene, discussing his path to Days of Our Lives, the relationships he has built on and off screen, and reuniting with former The Young and the Restless co-star Greg Rikaart.

Chad’s return to Salem is immediately complicated when he runs into Cat Greene (AnnaLynne McCord) upon arriving back in town. After previously pursuing a relationship with her, Chad agrees to keep his distance following a negative reaction from his son, Thomas (Alexander Elijah Bond), going as far as to write that into a custody agreement with Thomas’s grandparents.

Discussing his approach to the role, Floyd said, “I think Chad’s M.O. is just to try to do exactly the opposite of what Stefano (Joseph Mascolo) would do.”

Although Chad was not raised by Stefano, having grown up believing he was the son of Charles Woods (David Leisure) and Madeline Peterson-Woods (Jessica Tuck), he later learned the truth about his parentage and has since navigated life as a member of the DiMera family.

Floyd added that Chad is striving to be a better father to his children, aiming to model the kind of parent he wished he had growing up.

The actor teased how excited he is for viewers to see where the story is headed, sharing that there would be “juicy storylines,” for fans to see. “There’s some fun, fun stuff coming up — I promise you that!” he said.
