These wedges are proof that heels can be stylish without compromising on comfort. Featuring a 3.5-inch wedge heel, these sandals offer some height while ensuring stability. Wedges are the most supportive types of heels, as the sole extends from the heel to the balls of your feet, allowing for a more even weight distribution.

The insoles are crafted with Ortholite Lazy recovery foam, designed to mold and conform to the shape of your foot. Once you remove the sandals, the insoles will return to their original shape, giving them that plush new shoe feel every time you step into them. How I Pack for a 7-Day Alaska Cruise With a Single Carry-On

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 6:10am

There isn’t a single type of trip that I can’t pack for in just a carry-on. After traveling the world for a year on a Broadway tour with one suitcase, living in incredibly small crew quarters as a performer on a cruise ship, and budget solo traveling the world, I’ve got this down to a science.

Recently, I started sharing packing videos online. Most of my videos were geared towards warm-weather trips–and people began to wonder, can I do the same with cold weather clothing, too? The answer is...absolutely! And, I think that it might actually be easier to pack for this type of trip in a smaller suitcase.

For the purpose of this article, we are going to pack as if we are going on a 7-day Alaska cruise. Generally, people cruise to Alaska between the months of May to October, and temperatures can range from about 30 to 65 degrees. I worked onboard the Norwegian Sun for an entire Alaskan season one year, and although the temperature range is a bit tough, all you need to do is practice the art of layering. I’m going to show you exactly what I’d pack if I were heading on a 7-day Alaska cruise myself, and you’ll be able to follow my methods easily.

View this post on Instagram The Airport/Travel Outfit Is The Most Important

We all know that cold-weather clothing can be quite bulky, which means it can take a lot of room up in your suitcase. To combat this issue, you are going to need to wear your bulkiest items as you travel to the cruise ship.

To start, I decided to wear a pair of jeans that are extremely comfortable and loose, yet stylish enough to wear throughout the trip as well. On top, I’ll wear a sweatshirt that will act as a layering piece all throughout the trip as well (more so for when I’m wandering around the cruise ship). On top of that, I will wear a brown puffer vest. This is a great layering piece for those cooler port days where a full jacket isn’t necessary. For my shoes, I will wear a pair of black combat boots–my bulkiest shoes that will also be worn for most of the trip.

On top of all of this, I will wear my large winter coat. Now, you don’t have to sit with all of these layers on top of you on the airplane. What I do is I take my jacket off, fold it, and use it as a cushion underneath my seat. You can always take other layers off and lay them on your lap as well. I tend to get very cold on airplanes, though, so I personally don’t find that to be an issue.

The Daily Outfits

Melissa Cabey

For warmer weather trips, I usually stick to four tops and four bottoms, all of which can be mixed and matched together to create 16 possible outfits. With a trip to Alaska, however, I change it up a bit. Including the pair of pants that I will wear on the plane, I will also bring another pair of jeans. That gives me two bottoms total that I will rewear throughout the week.

For the tops, I chose three thin long-sleeved turtlenecks, one thicker sweater and one button up sweater. I also have the sweatshirt and vest that I wore on the plane. At the core, this gives me 10 different outfit combinations, and that’s if you don’t consider layering. The button-up sweater and the thick sweater could be worn over any of the thin turtle necks, and the vest can be layered on top of any combination of clothing. With this set of clothing pieces, I won’t run out of outfits to wear.

Evening Outfits

Melissa Cabey

In my experience, Alaska cruises are much more laid back when it comes to dressing up at night. I decided to pack two “fancy” evening outfits for the nights that I am planning on getting a nice dinner onboard. One is a long sweater dress, and the other is a pair of pleated pants with a long sleeved bodysuit to go with it.

For other evenings, I could pair the pants and the body suit with my other day clothes that I brought. I could also just continue to wear the outfit that I wore during the day out in port–there’s truly no crime in doing that.

Shoes, Accessories and Necessities

For a trip like an Alaska cruise, I think you only need three pairs of shoes. The main pair will be the combat boots that I’ll wear on the plane, and will wear out in most of the ports. The second pair will be a pair of warm Birkenstocks–which were my personal favorite to wear around the cruise ship when I was working onboard during an Alaska season. Lastly, I’ll have a pair of closed-toe kitten heels. These will be great to wear during the evening for dinner each night.

Melissa Cabey

For accessories, I packed a hat and a scarf, just in case I need some extra warmth. I also packed my makeup, a hair brush and my hair straightener. For toiletries, I keep it very simple. I always use the shampoo, conditioner and body soap onboard, so I only had to pack things like face wash and lotion, deodorant, a razor, a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Melissa Cabey

Anything else that you might need can fit in your personal item. Items like chargers for your electronics, your laptop, medications, snacks, a water bottle and a fanny pack can all fit comfortably in a backpack or shoulder bag. In my case, I actually still had a bit of room left in my carry-on, so I might put some of those items in there as well.

Alaska Cruise Packing: 5 More Tips for Your Carry-On
  • The "Base Layer" Secret: Pack a pairs of thermal leggings and "Heattech" top. They take up almost zero room but allow you to wear your lighter stylish turtlenecks in much lower temperatures.
  • Waterproof over Warm: In Alaska, it’s often the mist and rain that make you cold, not just the temperature. Ensure your "bulky" outer layer is water-resistant, or pack a tiny, compressible rain shell to layer over your puffer vest.
  • Binoculars are a Necessity: While you want to save space, don't cut the binoculars. Glacier viewing and whale spotting from your balcony or the deck are 50% of the experience. Tuck them inside your combat boots in the suitcase to save space.
  • The Laundry Hack: Since you are limited on clothes, pack a few travel-sized sink detergent packets. Alaskan cruises are active; being able to wash your base layer in the sink halfway through the week is a game-changer.
  • Magnet Power: Cruise ship walls are metal. Pack a few heavy-duty magnetic hooks to hang your wet scarves, hats or damp coats on the wall rather than cluttering the small closet or chairs.

1978 'Terminally Cool' Classic Named the Greatest Yacht Rock Song of All Time

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 5:42am

A smooth-sailing 1978 staple has officially been crowned the ultimate yacht rock song, beating out decades of breezy competition to claim the top spot.

Gerry Rafferty was on a career high with the release of his successful LP City to City. The album famously topped the long reign of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in July 1978, according to Rhino Records.

Rafferty had a huge success the LP's first single, "Baker Street," released in June of 1978. The song just missed the top spot of the Billboard Top 100, coming in at No. 2.

In October of that same year, the singer and songwriter released "Right Down the Line." It landed at No. 12 and remained on the charts for an astonishing 15 weeks.

Paste Magazine named Rafferty's easy classic to the top spot of its list of the Greatest Yacht Rock Songs of All Time. The outlet called the song "terminally cool," and called it the "end-all-be-all of yacht rock superstardom."

Their assessment continues: "In some ways, it transcends even that. Does it sound good on a boat? Probably. Does it sound good with the top down and the city lights hovering over you? You bet your a** it does."

"Right Down the Line" was written by Rafferty for his wife, Carla stated his official Facebook page. The tune has since surpassed "Baker Street" to become the musician's most streamed song, with over 300M listens.

Surprisingly, the Scottish superstar never played any shows in the United States, despite the huge success of his music. Rafferty’s daughter Martha told The Daily Record in 2011, “He was planning a tour of America but was scared by the momentum he was generating and the kind of people his success attracted.”

He said in a BBC documentary that he was reluctant to become famous because it would alter one of his greatest personal freedoms, to be an "observer in life." Rafferty stated, “Once you enter into the world of celebrity you can no longer be the observer in life and I’ve always valued that highly. Once entered you then become the observed.”

“Right Down the Line” was introduced to new listeners after it was featured in the first two episodes of Season 2 of HBO’s Euphoria. It helped spark a renewed surge in streams and brought the laid-back classic to a whole new generation.

Gerry Rafferty died in January 2011. He was 63.

1976 Anthem for Fans Just Ranked Among ‘Top Rock Songs of All Time’

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 5:34am

In 1976, Kiss opened their Destroyer album with “Detroit  Rock City.” Paired with the ballad “Beth” as its B-side, the riff-heavy song had an unusual chart history. After producers flipped the order of the songs on the single, "Beth” peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Dec 4. 1976, with “Detroit  Rock City” as the B-side.

Still, the opening track became one of Kiss’s signature songs and an arena rock anthem.

In April 2026, Ultimate Classic Rock ranked “Detroit Rock City” as one of the top 100 rock songs of all time. The song was ranked on a list that included “Stairway to Heaven” and “Hotel California.”

Describing the Destroyer album as Kiss’s “most polished and accomplished studio LP,” the outlet added, “Its opening song, ‘Detroit Rock City,’ is a tribute to fans.”

Detroit  was important to Kiss

“Detroit Rock City” was written by Kiss frontman Paul Stanley and producer Bob Ezrin. In an interview with M Live, Stanley revealed that Detroit embraced Kiss before anyone else did, so he wanted to write a song in tribute to the city.

“Detroit, for me, has always been an incredible city with a great allure and a great history," Stanley told Ultimate Classic Rock in 2021. “It's a city that really embraces rock 'n' roll. And we were a headliner in Detroit before we were anywhere close to that in other parts of the country.”

But the song also became a tribute to a fan who died on the way to a Kiss show.

“It started off as just a song to sing the praises of this rock 'n' roll city,” Stanley shared. "Bob Ezrin, at the time, really wanted us to push ourselves in terms of our lyrics and perspective. And I remembered that a fan going to our show in Charlotte got killed, was hit by a car, and I just remember thinking about the idea of somebody traveling to see something that celebrates life, and in the process losing their life. So the song became about somebody traveling to a Kiss concert and not making it. It was still championing Detroit, but also memorialized somebody who didn't get there."

When the hard-rocking song was released as a single, the pairing with the piano-based love ballad "Beth” threw off some fans.

“When it first came out, some people were really happy with ‘Detroit Rock City’ and some people were upset with ‘Beth,’” Kiss bassist Gene Simmons told Music Radar. “They were released as the single, ‘Detroit Rock City’ as the A-side, but the B-side, ‘Beth,’ became the number one record.”

In 2019, Classic Rock magazine ranked “Detroit Rock City” as the greatest-ever Kiss song. Calling it a “timeless ode to the power of rock’n’roll,” the outlet added, “It was in Detroit, not their hometown of New York, that Kiss found their biggest audience in their early days. In return, the band gave the Motor City its own rock anthem. No Kiss show is complete without it.“

7 Phrases a Child Psychologist Is Begging Parents of ‘Challenging’ Kids To Stop Saying

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 5:31am

As much as we may be reluctant to say it—and with good reason—some kids are more “challenging” than others. Maybe they don’t listen to you or follow instructions. They might have extra emotional challenges or barriers in their lives. They might even hit, kick or yell at other people. That can be draining for even the most patient, loving parent.

In response, you might be tempted to yell back. You might want to assert your dominance or be extra strict with them. You might wonder why they can’t do what you asked them to, or “how other parents do it.” You might wonder what your life would look like if you had an “easy” kid, or you might wonder if you’ve “succeeded” as a parent

Knowing how to respond in the “right” way to “challenging” kids is undoubtedly hard. While talking to your personal therapist can be super valuable, it can also be expensive, so let’s start with some parenting tips from a licensed psychologist who has answers. Ahead, she shares why some kids are “difficult,” seven phrases to stop saying to challenging kids (spoiler, they're common and unhelpful), how to respond to them in an effective way and helpful phrases those kids need to hear from you.

Why Are Some Kids Challenging?

As mentioned, seeing a child as “challenging” is understandable, but it’s also not quite comprehensive or compassionate. When kids are “challenging,” they're often going through something out of their control, and/or they haven’t been given the tools to manage their emotions and address their needs.

“Kids can be challenging for a myriad of reasons, such as biological factors like emotion dysregulation problems, and environmental factors like parental style, poor contingency management and power struggles,” says Dr. Jolie Silva, PhD, a psychologist and chief operating officer at New York Behavioral Health.

That can present in all kinds of ways, whether it’s a child who wasn’t taught coping mechanisms, has overly permissive parents, has a history of trauma or perhaps has a mental health condition. None of those is the child’s fault.

Related: 11 Childhood ‘Good Intentions’ That Actually Led to Emotional Wounds, According to Psychologists

7 Phrases To Stop Using With ‘Challenging’ Kids, According to a Child Psychologist

With that context in mind, Dr. Silva urges parents to stop responding with the following phrases.

1. “If you don’t do this, then you are not doing that!”

This is an example of an empty threat, and it’s not necessarily helpful, according to Dr. Silva.

“If you don’t follow through on contingencies you claim are in place, then you are simply telling the kid, ‘Do whatever you want because nothing I say matters,’” she says.

2. “Because I'm the boss!”

It’s tempting to assert your power during a frustrating argument with your child, but it’s simply not worth it. It’s a sign of authoritarian parenting, or being strict, demanding and low in responsiveness and warmth.

“Decades of research have proved that authoritarian parenting does little to foster children's mental, emotional and behavioral growth,” Dr. Silva says.

3. “There is no reason for you to be acting like this”

While you might not understand what they're experiencing, invalidating it won’t help.

“The truth is, we all have reasons for acting the way we act,” Dr. Silva notes. “Parents may not always agree with their challenging kid’s behavior, but uncovering and dealing with the underlying reasons for the behavior is more effective than negating them.”

4. “Joey never acts like this!”

Again, people are different, and comparing their emotional responses isn’t the way to go. In fact, Dr. Silva believes that “one of the biggest mistakes parents can make is to compare their child to other children, whether it be siblings, other relatives or friends, which often leads to their negative internal dialogue about self-worth.”

5. “You never do what you are supposed to do”

Absolutes, such as “never” and “always,” are best avoided, too.

“Speaking in extremes is not only untrue, but models black-and-white thinking, which is an irrational cognitive structure that can lead to mental and emotional challenges,” Dr. Silva says.

6. “You are lazy”

Keep feedback more specific than this phrase.

“Research has shown that children do best when parents speak about specific behaviors (e.g., ‘You have been sitting on the couch for two hours when we agreed to 30 minutes'), rather than label traits (e.g., laziness),” Dr. Silva shares.

Related: 11 Phrases Child Psychologists Say Can Secretly Harm a Child’s Confidence

7. “Your behavior is horrible!”

While the phrase may feel true, be mindful of catastrophization, another cognitive distortion.

“While the behavior may be unpleasant or even downright defiant, labeling it as horrific, awful or horrendous does not help decrease it,” Dr. Silva states.

What’s the Best Way To Handle a Challenging Child?

So, those common and understandable phrases aren’t ones to use. How can people best deal with “challenging” children, then?

According to Dr. Silva, it starts with a thought-out plan and not reacting in the moment. Think: How do you want to approach your child? When, and what will you say? What are you curious about?

“It helps to include your child in this plan, so they take ownership over their behaviors, are more accountable and less prone to power struggles,” she adds.

When you’re both feeling calm and pleasant, she encourages bringing up one problematic behavior in a non-accusatory way. Keep it neutral; note what you’re noticing. This can elicit an honest response about why the child is engaging in the behavior and helpful ways to address the underlying problem without defensiveness.

“Think gentle investigation rather than interrogation,” Dr. Silva says.

4 Validating Phrases ‘Challenging’ Kids Actually Need From Their Parents

Besides that general advice, Dr. Silva recommends saying the following four phrases to validate the child’s needs.

1. “It looks like you are struggling right now. What’s going on?”

A phrase like this can be especially valuable when a child is emotional—even if and when that looks like disobedience.

“This will validate the child and likely disarm them to have a conversation about the challenging behavior, rather than a power struggle,” Dr. Silva explains.

Related: How To Validate Someone’s Feelings, According to a Clinical Psychologist

2. “I am concerned about this behavior because of X. How do you think we should handle this?”

Collaboratively problem-solving with your child is valuable and gives them ownership over their lives.

“You should, of course, set boundaries when appropriate, but let them think about their actions rather than give them fuel to immediately become defensive,” Dr. Silva adds.

3. “It looks like you need some space right now. Let me know when you would like me to support you.”

Most, if not all, of us know that taking a moment to cool down alone can be necessary at times—and the same goes for kids. With that said, be sure they know you’re there for them when they're ready to talk.

“When people are emotionally escalated, their ability to think rationally is significantly diminished,” Dr. Silva says. “Give your child space to de-escalate before addressing a problematic behavior.”

4. “When you said X, what do you think that communicated to me?”

There are two different reasons or benefits to a question like this.

“This gives you information to not only understand their perspective, but also see if they have any insight into what they are actually communicating to other people,” Dr. Silva says.

In short, it’s a learning opportunity for both of you. And after all, when it comes to “challenging” kids, additional understanding—on both sides—is what’s needed.

Pool floats, patio cushions, yard toys, gardening tools, sports gear — it all slowly piles up until your backyard feels more like a disaster zone than a place to relax. And while your garage might seem like the obvious solution, chances are it’s already packed with everything else you didn’t know where to put. That’s the point when having a dedicated outdoor storage spot starts to feel less like a luxury and more like a necessity.

Instead of dragging things in and out or letting them stack up in corners, you need a piece that’s meant to handle it all. The Lofka Outdoor Storage Cabinet at Walmart is exactly that. Now marked down 52% to $140 from its original $290 price tag, it’s a simple, practical fix that helps bring some order back to your space.

This cabinet is built to actually handle life outside, not just look the part. It’s made from solid fir wood with reinforced corners and rust-resistant hardware, giving it a sturdy, durable build that can stand up to the elements. The waterproof asphalt roof is slightly tilted to prevent water from pooling on top, while ventilated shutters keep air circulating to prevent moisture or trapped fumes from chemicals like gasoline, paints, or pesticides from building up.

Inside, it’s just as practical. Measuring 34.3 inches wide, 18.3 inches deep, and 63.2 inches high, it offers plenty of storage without taking over your outdoor space. Two adjustable shelves let you customize the layout depending on what you’re working with. Keep them in for smaller items or remove them to fit taller tools such as shovels, rakes, or leaf blowers.

The double doors are lockable and reinforced with strong magnetic latches plus an extra wooden lock, so everything stays secure and in place. Whether it lives on a patio, deck, porch, or tucked alongside your garage, it’s an easy way to keep outdoor clutter contained and your space looking a lot more put together.

A Neuroscientist Swears by This Simple Morning Habit for All-Day Mental Clarity

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 5:25am

Starting each day with a clear, refreshed mind can be totally life-changing. It promotes focus while making room for motivation, productivity and even speedy reaction time. Waking up without mind chatter enables you to think uninhibitedly and make intentional decisions throughout the day. It also helps you conquer daily tasks—work, social plans, chores and unexpected curveballs—in a cool, calm and collected manner.

In a perfect world, everyone would wake up feeling totally rested. The birds would be chirping and the sun would be shining, too. But alas, real life doesn’t always channel that picture-perfect, tranquil aesthetic. The good news is, there are some practices you can adopt into your lifestyle that can completely improve your days. In fact, we spoke with a neuroscientist who swears by one simple morning habit for all-day mental clarity.

“The first hour after waking is a highly sensitive biological window,” explains Dr. Ramses Alcaide, MD, Neuroscientist and CEO/co-founder of neurotechnology company Neurable. “Your brain is transitioning out of sleep stages and looking for environmental cues to set its internal clock. Timing matters because the input you receive in the morning directly influences your cortisol response. This natural peak in cortisol is what makes you feel alert and ready to take on the day. If you miss this window and wait until the afternoon to establish a strong biological rhythm, you spend half the day fighting sleep inertia and you risk pushing your natural sleep cycle too late into the evening.”

Dr. Alcaide has spent more than a decade developing non-invasive brain-computer interface technology that measures cognitive load, attention and focus in real time, providing him with a unique, data-driven perspective on how early-day behaviors can impact the brain’s performance. Below, he shares the simple morning habit that gives him all-day mental clarity—and how you can add it to your day, too.

The Best Morning Habit for All-Day Mental Clarity, Neuroscientist Says

The most productive morning habit Dr. Alcaide swears by for lasting mental clarity is performing moderate physical activity first thing, along with consuming a nutritious breakfast shortly after. This could be heading outdoors for a brisk walk or jog, water aerobics or even getting active in the garden.

“Interestingly, this combination of early movement and food intake is a well-known protocol for beating jet lag,” Dr. Alcaide tells Parade. “When you travel across time zones, elite athletes and executives use exercise and meal timing to rapidly reset their internal clocks. I use this exact same mechanism both for travel and to beat morning grogginess and lock in high-performance mental clarity for the rest of the day.”

Related: The One Breakfast Habit Brain Health Experts Are Begging You To Stop

What Happens to the Brain Within the First Hour of Waking That Makes This Habit Effective

To understand why this morning habit is so productive, it’s essential to consider your circadian rhythm. Your central biological clock is situated in your brain, while your digestive system and muscles house your peripheral clocks, Dr. Alcaide notes. When you wake up and immediately move into a workout session, you send a major surge of oxygen-rich blood to the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain that focuses on decision-making and self-control.

“By following that movement with food, you synchronize your brain and body clocks. This dual signal tells your nervous system that the day has definitively started, clearing out residual sleep pressure and optimizing your cortisol awakening response,” Dr. Alcaide explains.

Related: Dietitians Are Divided on Whether Dinner Timing Impacts Brain Health—but They Do Agree on This for People Over 50

How This Habit Influences Focus, Attention and Cognitive Performance

When your biological clocks align in the morning, your brain experiences a predictable, consistent release of neurotransmitters instead of erratic spikes and crashes. According to Dr. Alcaide, this stable environment serves as the foundation for sustained attention.

“By optimizing your morning routine, your prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for executive function and deep focus, operates with maximum efficiency,” he says. “You are essentially giving your brain a stable energy budget to spend throughout the day, which directly prevents mid-afternoon cognitive fatigue and allows you to handle complex tasks with ease.”

This is great news, considering many of us hit that inevitable brick wall in the middle of the afternoon. Sometimes, coffee doesn’t even help!

Common Morning Habits That Can Reduce Mental Clarity

As critical as it is to establish and prioritize healthy morning habits, it’s also important to know what to avoid. One of the most common mistakes before the morning even begins is reaching for your phone while still relaxing in bed. Sure, you may be eager to catch up on social media content or check your work emails—but this habit is a major faux pas.

“Consuming highly stimulating or stressful information immediately upon waking forces the brain into a reactive state, hijacking your attention span before the day even begins,” Dr. Alcaide says.

Not hydrating is another bad move. Your brain depends on water in order to function properly, and after a full night’s rest, you wake up slightly dehydrated, making a tall glass of water essential.

Lastly, consuming a breakfast that contains a lot of refined sugars can cause a quick spike and crash in blood glucose, depriving your mind of the steady energy it needs to maintain clarity. Rather than store-bought baked goods and cereals, consider protein-packed eggs or oats with chia seeds and fresh fruit.

By kickstarting your day with healthy habits, you’re setting your mind up for all-day success.

In the featured image, the young prince posed with his arms crossed, while leaning against a metal guardrail on what looked like a boat on water. Prince Louis wore a long-sleeved quarter-zip with the sleeves pulled up to his elbows. He flashed a toothy smile with slightly wind-tousled hair.

1983 Tearjerker Climbed Charts Thanks to a Popular Soap Opera Moment Fans Never Forgot

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 5:11am

When the tearjerker song "Think of Laura" by Grammy-award winner Christopher Cross comes across the overhead speakers at the grocery store, it's normal to feel a little wistful. With Cross's soulful voice, that mellow melody, and the laid-back groove, few songs capture heartbreak quite like it. However, the emotional ballad really gained iconic '80s love song status, thanks to an unforgettable moment on the soap opera General Hospital.

Back in the early '80s, the General Hospital love story between the characters Luke Spencer (played by Anthony Geary) and Laura Spencer (formerly Collins; played by Genie Francis) was serious business. Mobs of soap fans were obsessed! In fact, the couple's 1981 double-episode TV wedding, complete with an Elizabeth Taylor guest appearance, earned 30 million viewers.

So you can imagine how upset fans were when Laura was abducted and went missing in 1981 (because Francis quit the show, claiming inequitable treatment alongside Geary) and left poor Luke heartbroken. And perhaps then, you can also understand how excited fans were when the couple was then reunited (because Francis returned!) in a very dramatic episode that aired on November 24, 1983.

And in the backdrop of that emotional Luke and Laura reunion scene, "Think of Laura" by Christopher Cross played.

Following the song's surge in popularity on General Hospital, “Think of Laura” was released in December 1983, as the lead single from Christopher Cross's second studio album, Another Page. That same month, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, and it peaked at No. 9 on February 4, 1984. The song stayed on the charts for 17 weeks.

All that soap opera popularity would have probably been fine except that Cross wrote the song in memory of a Denison University college student named Laura Carter, who was also a friend of Cross's then girlfriend. Carter was killed when she was struck in the backseat of her parents’ car by a stray bullet from nearby gang violence.

When it comes to the song "Think of Laura," this real-life tragedy is the one that should really be remembered.

All that said, the easy-listening track "Think of Laura" is still making its mark out there. To date, Christopher Cross’s 1983 hit song now has over 86.1 million streams on Spotify.

I Tried a 64-Year-Old Meatloaf Recipe—The Secret Ingredient Blew Me Away

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 5:07am

There’s something really exciting about bringing a vintage recipe back to life...especially one that promises to be as easy as this one does. This meatloaf comes straight from a 1960s-era issue of Parade, and I couldn’t wait to see if it still holds up today. As someone who has tested a few meatloaf recipes out for Parade.com, I was excited to dig into this one!

Facebook.com

I grew up eating meatloaf a few times a month, and now as a mom, I find myself doing the same. My kids will eat just about anything ground-meat-based if I call it a “meatball,” so meatloaf has become a regular in our rotation. Since we love it so much, I’m always on the hunt for versions that are simple, reliable and low-lift.

That’s exactly why this recipe caught my attention. It’s a 3-ingredient meatloaf and one of those ingredients is Lipton Onion Soup Mix, which also happens to be the base for one of my all-time favorite chip dips. I was immediately intrigued.

I went on a full hunt for the original PET evaporated milk listed in the vintage ad and couldn’t find it anywhere, so I subbed in another brand. And if I’m being honest, that was the ingredient that made me the most nervous. Twelve ounces of milk going into two pounds of meat? It felt like a lot.

But I had to see how it turned out and whether this decades-old shortcut still holds up today.

What Is the 64-Year-Old Meatloaf Recipe That Shocked Me?

Jeanette Donnarumma

What makes this recipe so surprising is how simple, and unconventional, it is. With just three ingredients, it skips all the usual add-ins like eggs, breadcrumbs or ketchup.

The real standout? Evaporated milk.

Adding that much liquid to a meatloaf mixture feels completely counterintuitive, but it acts as both a binder and a moisture booster. Combined with the seasoning from the onion soup mix, it creates a fully flavored, cohesive loaf with almost no effort.

Ingredients Needed for This Vintage Meatloaf Recipe

Jeanette Donnarumma

This vintage meatloaf recipe keeps things refreshingly simple with just three ingredients: 2 pounds of lean ground beef, 2 packets (or one box) of Lipton Onion Soup Mix and one 12-ounce can of evaporated milk. The soup mix does all the heavy lifting when it comes to seasoning, while the evaporated milk acts as both a binder and a moisture booster, creating a tender, flavorful loaf without the need for eggs or breadcrumbs.

How To Make This 3-Ingredient Meat Loaf

Jeanette Donnarumma

This recipe truly lives up to its “1-2-3” name.

Start by adding the ground beef to a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle in both packets of onion soup mix, then pour in the evaporated milk. Once you pour in the milk, you may have a "that's too much!" moment, but trust and gently mix everything together until fully combined.

Jeanette Donnarumma

With slightly wet hands, shape the mixture into a loaf and place it into a shallow, ungreased baking pan. Transfer to a 350°F oven and bake for about one hour, or until the top is browned and the loaf is cooked through.

Jeanette Donnarumma

Let it rest for a few minutes before slicing to help it hold its shape.

My Honest Review

Jeanette Donnarumma

This recipe was a bit of a roller coaster for me. I started out excited, then quickly got nervous, especially once I poured all 12 ounces of milk into the meat. But the second I started mixing, I was shocked at how well everything came together.

By the time it went into the oven, I was fully invested and excited for my lunch.

When I pulled it out an hour later, my kitchen smelled incredible. After pulling it out of the oven, I did notice it was sitting in a lot of liquid, so I pulled it out of the pan and let it rest to be able to reabsorb some of it. After letting it rest for a few minutes, I sliced in and honestly, I was blown away.

It was juicy, tender and perfectly structured, not falling apart but still incredibly soft. The texture was exactly what you want in a meatloaf. The flavor was outstanding, deeply savory and slightly on the salty side, but in a way that I personally loved.

The onion bits from the soup mix plumped up beautifully as it baked, giving you little bursts of flavor in every bite. It was rich, comforting and surprisingly balanced for something so simple.

Even better, my kids loved it.

This is one of those recipes that feels low effort but high reward, a total weeknight win. I’m already thinking about making a double batch next time and freezing one for later.

And now I can’t stop wondering what else I should be adding evaporated milk to.

This 64-year-old meatloaf recipe proves that sometimes, the simplest ideas really do stand the test of time.

With just three ingredients, it delivers on flavor, texture and ease in a way that feels almost too good to be true. It’s a reminder that you don’t always need a long ingredient list to make something delicious.

Virgin Voyages Just Launched an AI Tool for Booking—And It's Actually Kind of Cool

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 4:10am

If you've ever spent an hour squinting at deck plans to make sure your cabin isn't directly under the galley or the treadmill room, you know that cruise planning is a logistical puzzle. Virgin Voyages is trying to eliminate that "analysis paralysis" with Rovey, a new digital assistant that acts as a pre-trip concierge.

While "AI" can often feel like a buzzword, this tool has a few very specific, real-world applications for anyone currently eyeing a sailing on one of the Lady Ships.

Related: Virgin Voyages Just Handed the Keys to Its Flagship to 1,000 Content Creators

It Acts as a Deck Plan Whisperer

Instead of you having to decode the difference between a Sea Terrace and a Brilliant Suite, you can describe your "vibe" to the tool. It's programmed to understand the ship's inventory, helping you narrow down a cabin category based on your budget and how much time you actually plan to spend in the room.

It Curates Your "Shore Things"

Virgin has over 150 ports of call and hundreds of excursions (which they call "Shore Things"). Rovey is designed to filter these based on your "travel pace." If you prefer active adventures over a slow-paced bus tour, the tool remembers that preference and only shows you the hikes or catamaran sails that actually fit your interests.

Related: Virgin Voyages Finally Brings Its Adults-Only Style to LA and Alaska

It Generates Your Logistics and Packing Lists

One of the most useful features for the practical traveler is its ability to handle "fine print" logistics. You can ask for a specific packing list for an Alaska voyage in May or a breakdown of exactly what is included in the Rockstar service.

The "Memory" Factor

The biggest win for the reader is that the tool remembers where you left off. If you start your research on your laptop during a lunch break and finish it on your phone later that night, Rovey keeps your progress intact so you don't have to start your search from scratch.

This is the first of several digital upgrades Virgin is rolling out this year to make the "Sailor" experience more seamless. For now, it lives on the Virgin website to help you get through the booking process without the usual twenty open browser tabs.

1967 Classic Ranked Among ‘Top Rock Songs of All Time’ Became a Timeless Anthem

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 4:02am

Released in 1967 as the final track on the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, “A Day in the Life” by The Beatles was accompanied by some of the band’s most iconic songs, from “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” to “With a Little Help from My Friends.”

But unlike the pop and rock influences present in the other songs on the album, the side two song took an experimental turn that ended up influencing the genre for decades to come.

Related: John Lennon’s First Solo Billboard No. 1 Was Inspired by This Surprising TV Show

It starts with a soft strumming guitar that’s quickly joined by piano, followed by John Lennon’s voice softly singing about reading the news, telling the story of a man’s tragic death as the drums kick in. The song then takes a turn with orchestral glissandos and tape effects, shifting the mood dramatically, before there’s an abrupt twist via an alarm clock sound. Paul McCartney then sings in an upbeat tone about waking up and starting his day, eventually explaining he “went into a dream.”

At that point, vocal harmonies jump in, moving the song back to Lennon’s dreamy soundscape, which once again gets interrupted by urgent strings that border on musical discord. A piano chord breaks through for around 30 seconds, softly fading out of the experimental pop song.

Related: 1968 Classic Was the First Posthumous Single to Top American Charts

Ultimate Classic Rock ranked it fourth in its list of Top 100 Rock Songs of All Time, stating that it marked “the moment the Beatles became more than pop stars,” with “A Day in the Life” crossing “the line between art and pop and between the past and the future.” The psychedelic rock song clocks in at just over five minutes in length, and has been covered by a plethora of other artists like Sting, Bobby Darin, Tori Amos, and Chris Cornell

The song heavily influenced other musicians, and has been heavily sampled and interpolated, appearing in songs from David Bowie’s “Young Americans” to “Alrededor de Mí” by powerhouse Argentinian rock band Los Enanitos Verdes.

1977 Classic Was a No. 1 Hit 49 Years Ago Today

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 3:23am

In 1977, Loretta Lynn released a tribute to her best friend that became one of the most beloved recordings of its time.

"She's Got You" sat at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart on April 23rd, 1977, marking another major success for Lynn. The track showcased her ability to translate emotion into genuine, relatable music.

It served as a tribute to her mentor and closest friend, Patsy Cline, who had originally released the song in 1962. She tragically passed a year later, and Lynn re-recorded the song in memory of her, featuring it on the 1977 tribute album I Remember Patsy.

Reflecting on her relationship with Cline, Lynn said, "Me and Patsy [Cline] bonded as sisters. I miss her, and as the years have passed, I haven’t stopped loving her or talking to her. She changed my life forever. I want folks to know how good Patsy was—at music, at business, and at being a friend."

Lynn and Cline's "She's Got You" centers on a woman reflecting on a lost relationship, noting that while another person may have the man, she still holds onto the memories and emotional connection. It encapsulated the experience of heartbreak, combining a sweet voice and beautiful melody to create a song that helps listeners feel less alone.

Lynn's delivery of the song helped differentiate it from the original. Her steady, conversational tone keeps the song grounded, allowing the lyrics to feel personal without becoming overly dramatic. The stripped-down arrangement also helps keep the focus on the story.

The song's success at the time reflected Lynn's continued dominance in country music throughout the decade. By the late 1970s, she had already built a reputation for recording songs that spoke directly to everyday experiences, especially from a woman's point of view.

Decades later, "She's Got You" remains one of her most recognized recordings, still praised for its vocals and emotional pull.

A 1974 smash hit made music history when it climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100—and did something no song had ever done before. Fifty-two years ago today, “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” became the first television theme song to top the charts.

Recorded by MFSB with vocals by The Three Degrees, the track served as the theme for Soul Train, the groundbreaking series that spotlighted Black artists and culture. Written and produced by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the song captured the essence of what would become known as the “Philly sound.”

Built around lush strings, bright horns, and a steady groove, “TSOP” is mostly instrumental, but it’s punctuated by unforgettable vocal lines: “People all over the world” and “Let’s get it on, it’s time to get down.” Those brief lyrics helped turn the track into something bigger than a theme song and it became a global invitation to the dance floor.

Interestingly, Don Cornelius, the creator and host of Soul Train, refused to allow the show’s name to appear in the single’s official title. That decision led to the now-iconic acronym “TSOP,” short for “The Sound of Philadelphia.” Ironically, the song would forever be tied to the show anyway.

The success was immediate. “TSOP” spent two weeks at No. 1 and topped multiple charts, including R&B and adult contemporary. It also sold more than a million copies and earned a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. The following year, it took home a Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.

Behind the scenes, MFSB wasn’t a traditional band but a collective of more than 30 studio musicians based at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. They served as the house band for Philadelphia International Records and backed major artists like The O'Jays and The Spinners. Their work helped define an entire era of soul and disco.

Decades later, “TSOP” still pulses through pop culture. It’s played before home games for the Philadelphia Phillies and remains one of the most recognizable themes in television history.

More than just a hit song, “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” was a cultural moment—one that turned a TV theme into a chart-topping anthem and helped shape the sound of the 1970s.

Quote of the Day: Cher Shares Her Powerful Secret To Achieving Greatness at Any Age

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 2:45am

Cher needs no introduction. Over the past seven decades, she's broken every boundary and blazed her own legendary trail. Along the way, she's sold 140 million records and won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and three Golden Globes. Did I mention she's also the only solo artist to score number-one singles on the Billboard charts for seven consecutive decades?

Born Cheryl Sarkisian on May 20, 1946, in El Centro, California, she grew up with an absent father and a mother who married six times. She struggled in school—only to find out years later that it was her undiagnosed dyslexia and dyscalculia that made it so difficult. At the age of 16, she dropped out of high school and moved to Los Angeles, where she met a 27-year-old Sonny Bono.

They formed one of the most famous duos in music history with hits like "I Got You Babe" and went on to star in The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which drew over 30 million viewers a week and made them one of television's most beloved couples. During this time, Cher was also dominating the charts as a solo artist, scoring three consecutive No. 1 singles with "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves," "Half-Breed" and "Dark Lady."

But behind the scenes, things weren't so sunny. In her memoir, Cher revealed that Sonny had set up a company called Cher Enterprises—which sounded sweet—until she discovered the business structure. "It was called Cher Enterprises, but I own nothing!" she said. "And we'd worked together for almost 12 years." After their divorce, Cher found herself at a crossroads. "He had made every decision for me," she'd later tell Billboard. "I knew how to sing and how to be a mother. I didn't know anything else."

Critics dismissed her as a variety show host playing dress-up, but Cher refused to let anyone or anything define her destiny. So she took acting classes, fought for dramatic roles and in 1988, she won an Oscar for Moonstruck. Then, when music industry bigwigs told her she was too old to make pop hits, she released "Believe" at the age of 52. It went No. 1 worldwide and became one of the best-selling singles of all time! And when people said she was too old to tour, she launched the highest-grossing concert tour by a female artist at the time, earning $250 million. At 79, she's still touring, still releasing music and still forging her own path. And that's exactly why Cher is today's quote of the day.

Quote of the Day by Cher

"Until you're ready to look foolish, you'll never have the possibility of being great."

This is so powerful—and Cher is living proof of its veracity. She's saying you can't accomplish extraordinary things by playing it safe. If you want to chase a dream, you have to be willing to take a giant leap—even if it means falling on your face and being laughed at.

Deeper Meaning of Cher's Quote—Fearlessness

When you take a look at every milestone in Cher's incredible journey, it's clear that she's lived by this quote throughout her life and career. "I've always taken risks and never worried what the world might really think of me," she once said. Whether it was taking the leap into acting, knowing full well she might fail at it, or releasing a pop single at the age of 52 despite being told it'd never work, Cher never worried about falling flat on her face. She was willing to take risks—even if it meant looking foolish—and look how it worked out for her!

At 79, she is one of the world's biggest superstars and continues to build her legacy. With Part 2 of her memoir releasing on Nov. 17, 2026—and rumblings of another world tour—the icon shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Her life and career are proof that we can accomplish extraordinary things as long as we're not afraid to take chances and always "Believe" in ourselves.

1973 No. 1 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’ Became a Timeless Anthem

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 2:12am

When Roberta Flack released her version of "Killing Me Softly with His Song" in 1973, it quickly set itself apart. The track’s stripped-back sound and lyrics made it feel personal in a way few hits did at the time.

More than 50 years later, it still serves as a timeless anthem that continues to connect with listeners. Rolling Stone even named the track as one of the greatest songs of all time, ranking it #273 out of 500 in their updated 2021 list.

"Killing Me Softly with His Song" was originally composed as a folk song by Charles Fox and co-written by Norman Gimbel and Lori Lieberman in late 1971. After Gimbel and Fox denied Liberman songwriting credit, she decided to record her own version of the song, but it never charted. Instead, multiple artists recorded their own covers, including Roberta Flack.

Flack first heard the song for the first time while on a flight from Los Angeles to New York City, and was immediately hooked by the title. In September 1972, Flack performed her cover as an encore while opening for Quincy Jones' tour stop in the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, which the audience loved. A few months later, in January 1973, Flack released her version of "Killing Me Softly With His Song," which was included in her fourth studio album, Killing Me Softly, and spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. That same year, the singer won the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Record of the Year.

American hip-hop group Fugees also released a cover of "Killing Me Softly With His Song" in 1996. Although it became an international hit, it did not appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Fox suggested that Flack's version was more successful than the original because her "version was faster and [had] a strong backbeat that wasn't in the original." The late pop-jazz singer, who grew up in a musical family, was very active in her church's community and played the piano for them during masses.

"My classical background made it possible for me to try a number of things," she said. "I changed parts of the chord structure and chose to end on a major chord. It wasn't written that way."

Despite Flack's version being more successful than the original, Lieberman described the rendition as "one of the greatest things to ever happen."

"I have endless gratitude to Roberta Flack for hearing something within that song to bring it to the world and to change not just my life, but so many with her artistry, her talent and her heart," Lieberman told the New York Post in February 2025 when Flack passed away due to health complications. "She was an incredible musician, an incredible pianist and a beautiful singer. She's one of the greatest artists of my generation."

The Grammy-winning singer and pianist has always been known for her smooth and intimate vocal style and her blend of soul, jazz and pop. She rose to fame in the early 1970s with her hits like "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Killing Me Softly with His Song" and "Feel Like Makin’ Love". Over the decades, Flack has remained an influential voice, shaping the sound of modern R&B and inspiring generations of artists. In February 2025, she passed away due to a heart attack and complications with ALS. She was 88 years old.

"Killing Me Softly With His Song" and the rest of Flack's discography are available on all major streaming platforms.
